elcome to December! Can you believe it’s that time of year again? Here at Handy Mag HQ, our December editions are packed with carol services, Christmas community events and local businesses. We firmly believe in ‘shopping locally’ and using local traders for our festive preparations supporting them is always top of our Christmas list! The Handy Mag team are getting ready for the big day: Nicky, who collates our special events, is busy getting into the Christmas spirit with her family, and wondering what Santa will bring this year. My daughter returns home from University so it will be nice to have the family together again for the festive celebrations. No doubt the dogs will need a bit of extra exercise as I’m sure there’ll be doggy treats galore!

www.thehandymag.co.uk | @Handymag Publisher: Moonriver Publishing Ltd Editor: Marianne Long Address: 5a Market Street, Malton YO17 7LY Tel: 01653 690859 Email: marianne@thehandymag.co.uk Community: nicky@thehandymag.co.uk

Our new member of staff, Faith, will spend her first Christmas with the Handy Mag team and will see how busy the office gets at this time of year. Faith has now been with us just over three months, and looks forward seeing how it ‘fits together’ when the new editions are printed. Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas in Malton without the annual Santa Fun Run, taking place on Sunday 13th December in the town’s Market Place. All proceeds go to Ryedale Special Families. Christmas can be a thoughtful time of year particularly if you’ve lost someone close to you, so why not attend one of the annual Saint Catherine’s Hospice Light Up A Life services here in Ryedale? On a final note, Handy Mag Ryedale October competition winners are Mr Wood: he correctly identified that the Perry’s coach was in Hovingham. Mrs Aconley from Thornton le Dale spotted all our apples hidden in adverts. Well done! We wish you a very Happy Christmas! Until next time,

Marianne

RUN BY VOLUNTEERS WHO HAVE BEEN THERE!

E

veryone has heard of the marvellous nursing and other support offered by Macmillan and Marie Curie. We also know about organisations such as Yorkshire Cancer Research, Cancer Research UK (and others) who raise funds to further research into the causes and cure of various forms of cancer. Then there are the individual Specialists, Radiologists and Doctors and Nurses who treat sufferers directly.

So where do we fit in to all of this and what do we do?

Ryedale Cancer Support & Social Group is a small informal group of volunteers who have experienced different types of cancer, lost close relatives, or supported friends and relatives who have survived the trauma of the disease. We also have Nursing / Hospice experience. We provide an opportunity for you to share concerns with a confidential chat, or to simply enjoy a relaxing couple of hours amongst friends who are (or have been) in the same position as you. You may not have cancer yourself but have concerns about a family member or friend who is suffering. We provide free light refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere and all we do is free of charge thanks to the generosity of our donors (see later). During the better months we organise visits to places of interest – we have visited

A warm welcome awaits you from Marion, Gordon, Jackie, Jean, Jan and Peter (from back row to the insert photo).

Ampleforth Abbey, Kilnwick Percy Hall (near Pocklington), Pocklington Canal Boat trip and various local tea rooms. We know how hard it can be to face cancer, and you may find it equally hard to walk through the door on your first visit to meet us, so bring a friend / relative with you, you will both be made welcome. Simply come along on the third Tuesday of the month to the RVS rooms in Hungate, Pickering, between 2.15 and 4.15pm.

Please join us and relax amongst like-minded friends for a couple of hours. For more information or an informal chat please contact Jean (tel 01751 476611) or Jackie (tel 01751 472234) or email peterja66@yahoo.co.uk. We are kindly supported by Wayside Holiday Park, Wrelton. Macmillan Cancer Care. Ryedale Lions Club. Pickering & District Rotary. Victory Lodge of Freemasons, Pickering. Numerous individual donors.

If anyone wishes to support our group, cheques should be made payable to Ryedale Cancer Support & Social Group and sent to Manor Garth, Main Street, Wrelton, YO18 8PG 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

On the 2nd of December last year the AA attended an average of 1150 breakdowns every hour! The cold and icy conditions mean it’s not just you that needs an extra layer or two of protection. To ensure you and your family stay safe on the roads this winter we’ve designed our Winter Safety Check to provide that extra protection. And because we feel that everyone should stay safe this winter we’ve decided to make it completely free.

A TRADITIONAL CHRISTMAS Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church What is the best Christmas present in the world? A broken drum, you just can’t beat it! I know it’s terrible, but Christmas isn’t Christmas without cracker jokes that make you groan. Christmas is a time full of tradition, those things we ‘always do at Christmas’. When I was growing up, there was always Pork Pie on Christmas morning. I thought that this was ‘normal’ but have since discovered it is not a widely practised Christmas tradition. Some traditions are unique to individual families and others, if we lost them, they would erode the very meaning of Christmas. Traditions change but perhaps there are some that we should guard and protect? One fading tradition is the telling of the Nativity story. Once central to Christmas, now seems to be an optional extra. According to the headline in a National Newspaper last Christmas, ‘99% of people don’t know what the Bible really says about the nativity story (and that includes donkeys, inns and wise men)’. How much do you know? Sadly if we don’t know the story, we can’t tell the story, and if we can’t tell the story, could we lose the story? For me, the Nativity story is full of awe and wonder, describing the nature of God and the purpose of humanity. For me, it is more than a tradition it is the foundation to life and the anchor through storms. For me, it is a breath taking account of the love God has for you and me. For others it is merely a myth, a fairy tale and certainly not true. I wonder? The amount of knowledge available to us today is more than at any other time in history. Just imagine depicting all the knowledge in the world by drawing a big circle on a wall. Now think how much you know and draw a second circle to depict your knowledge. I know some really clever people, but I don’t know anyone who would draw a very big second circle. Everyone I know would agree the knowledge they don’t have is greater than the knowledge they have. However, just because they don’t have the knowledge it doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist or isn’t true? I hope this Christmas that the 99% of people who don’t know the Nativity story aren’t missing out. Don’t forget, if you take Christ out of Christmas you’re merely left with M&S! 14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

HOW TO SOLVE YOUR INHERITANCE TAX PROBLEM WITHOUT GIVING ANYTHING AWAY More than £4 billion is collected by the Tax Man every year in Inheritance Tax (IHT). There’s been some form of death duty in the UK for thousands of years. The general idea is that this kind of tax attempts to redistribute wealth stopping the rich from getting richer and the poor from getting poorer. The theory is that some of the money goes to the state and gets distributed for the benefit of all. THE MECHANICS Everyone gets an allowance they don’t pay IHT on. The current allowance is £325,000. This means if your house, car, cash, savings and investments – everything you own on death – are worth less than £325,000 when you die, there’ll be no tax to pay. Anything above that limit is taxed at 40%. This means that if you are worth, say, £600,000 when you die, your heirs will get a tax bill

of £110,000. From 2021, an additional £175,000 allowance is available for those passing on family homes to direct descendants.

FREE CLAIM YOUR COPY NOW

TAX COMES FIRST The tax generally has to be paid within 6 months of death – before your heirs can even inherit their share. CONTROVERSIAL People have widely differing views on Inheritance Tax. Some agree that it is fair to redistribute wealth on death. Others think that what they have accumulated through their own hard work should go to their family and not the tax man. Particularly when they think the Government wastes taxpayers money on ill-fated schemes and endless quangos and jobs for the boys. Whatever your views, IHT could clearly have a huge impact on your family’s future. After all, if you’ve been smart with money all your life you might not

Legal ways to reduce your IHT

EXCLUSIVE READER want to lose a chunk of it when you die. If so, you need to arm yourself with the facts before you can make sensible decisions. A VOLUNTARY TAX The late Roy Jenkins, MP, said Inheritance Tax is a voluntary levy paid by those who distrust their heirs more than they dislike the Inland Revenue. That’s because there are things you can do to soften the blow for your family or

even avoid IHT altogether. EASY TO READ GUIDE The most important thing is to figure out if you’ve got a problem and if you want to do anything about it. This little book will help you do just that. Warm Living from Focus Fireplaces & Stoves

E

ven now in modern times the fireplace is still the central point in the room. We still like the idea of heat and an appealing focal point. We talk to all sorts of people from so many different areas and all sorts of styles of home. The one thing that is always said, even in modern homes is: “we love a fireplace”. It’s strange if one is not there, and when it comes to planning a rooms décor, it is difficult to work out the layout without one. Fashions come and go, even in fireplaces. We have noticed over the years the popularity of stoves, they don’t always suit every lifestyle or flue. However, the choice and range of imitation stoves has increased both in gas and electric. So, regardless of your preferred fuel choice, there’s a stove just for you. Customers love the care and attention that Focus give them, from start to finish. The advantages of having our own in house fitting and experienced sales staff allows us to control and deliver the high standards we expect from ourselves. Our installation team are both HETAS and Gas Safe registered.

The showroom has over 60 displays covering all styles of fireplaces and stoves. We cater for open fires, gas or electric and can guide you through the maze of technical pitfalls that fires and fireplaces so often bring to light. We are open 6 days a week. So come and visit are beautiful showroom, easy parking and only 10 minutes away from Monks Cross shopping centre. Focus Fireplaces & Stoves, The Bull Comm Centre, Stockton Lane, York, YO32 9LE. PREPARING FOR CHRISTMAS BY PETE BROADLEY

LOCAL PARENT & BRAND NEW COLUMNIST!

A

round the start of September every year the dreaded ‘list’ comes out. This is no mere shopping list, rather it’s a dossier detailing every Christmas present and card we need to buy, when and where it must be delivered and what people were given previously (for cross-referencing purposes). Several weeks of impromptu shopping trips, and constant discussions about what to get for whom, are endured to allow the festive season to be enjoyed with less stress. This level of military precision may seem excessive, but if it helps avoid the chaos of dragging the kids on a last minute shopping expedition, it’s definitely worthwhile. It is such a popular time in our household that December has been dubbed “Christmas month”. The tree and decorations go up at the first opportunity, we dust off the Michael Bublé Christmas CD, and everything becomes a bit more sparkly. I’m convinced my other half gets more excited than our two young girls. Around this point normal parenting rules go out of the window. Chocolate at breakfast every day becomes normal and there is a procession of parties and events to attend. The children are gradually wound up into a state of near frenzy. The poor creatures, full of sugar and near bursting with excitement, suddenly find any misbehaviour is met with the phrase; “Santa won’t come if you’re naughty”. After weeks of preparation, anticipation and more mince pies than is healthy, we’re finally ready. The presents have been wrapped and I have excelled in my role on sticky duty. Once the big day arrives we invariably find that Santa has been after all. The rest of the day has an inevitable sense of anticlimax after such a build up, but it’s actually a relief as everyone is finally able to unwind (and overindulge). No doubt we’ll do just the same again next year. Now, I must get back to writing Christmas cards.

SCOUTS HELP SPREAD THE LIONS LIFE-SAVER MESSAGE

R

yedale Lions club and local scouts have teamed up to help more people be prepared for sudden illness or accident at home.

The Lions are distributing supplies of a potentially life-saving Message in a Bottle free of charge to help protect people who live alone or may be at risk in the event of a medical emergency at home. Boys and girls from The 1st Vale of Pickering Scout Group and Akela Lynne Bowman lent their support by helping to pack the information leaflets which fit inside each small plastic container, ready for distribution. The small plastic bottles, kept handily in the home fridge, provide a unique way for vulnerable people to store vital personal information about their health, regular medicines, and emergency contacts. North Yorkshire police and fire crews joined the scouts to welcome the initiative. “When somebody living alone has an accident or sudden illness they may not be able to communicate. The Message in a Bottle

can save us valuable minutes and hours in providing the right life-saving help and alerting other family members,” said Stuart Moss, Pickering fire station watch manager. More than six million bottles have now been donated by Lions clubs across the UK and Ryedale Lions has distributed 6,000 through GP and dentist surgeries and other local outlets. “Everybody thinks it won’t happen to them, but we know it can. Every bottle we distribute is potentially a life saved,” said Lions Club organiser, Roy Foggin. Anyone interested in obtaining a free Lions Message in a Bottle should contact their local GP surgery, dentist or pharmacy.

CHRISTMAS IN RYEDALE

Ryedale Christmas in

16 Pages Featuring our Five Market Towns this Festive Season Image courtesy of www.visitryedale.co.uk

ADD SOME SPARKLE THIS CHRISTMAS TO THOSE IN NEED IN RYEDALE Can you imagine a Christmas without presents, decorations or festive food? For some people in Ryedale, this is the reality. Many individuals and families on low incomes can only afford a meagre Christmas. So the Besom in Ryedale helps make a difference by giving hampers to those most in need. Recipients of the hampers are local people who are referred by health and care professionals to the Besom as being in need. So, to get involved, you could: • Donate a complete hamper of Christmas goodies • Donate items of festive food, decorations, or small gifts (see

suggestions below): • Help deliver hampers to recipients’ homes • Put together a hamper as a group • Theme your hamper, ie, make one suitable for a mum with a young baby

Please place donated items in a sturdy, decorated box and please let it open for checking.

Suggested food items include Christmas cake, mince pies, cereals, soups, tinned food, honey, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, fruit juice, sweets and biscuits.

Then place your open box at Hope Central, Castlegate, Malton, from Friday 6th November to 6pm on Thursday 10th December.

You could include a Christmas card too! Christmas items could include baubles, crackers, tablecloths and napkins. Besom is unable to accept perishable items, alcohol, value brands, homemade items or out of date items. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 25

Malton CHRISTMAS IN

Malton is widely regarded as Yorkshire’s Food Capital with its emphasis on local food and drink. And the town really buzzes during the Christmas period, with markets, pantos and Santa Fun Runs! Yet as well as fabulous food, including butchers and ice cream emporiums, there is a fantastic array of shops, from high street names to independent traders. These include retailers who specialise in soft furnishings, fashion, cakes and much more. Malton includes St Michael’s Church as its centre, along with the Milton Rooms and the Market Place, which has two hours free parking. The Market Place is also ‘host’ to the annual Santa Fun Run on Saturday 13th December from 1pm, in aid of Ryedale Special Families.

Visit the town’s historic side streets, discover hidden treasures and some surprising finds. Malton also has links to the brewing industry, the race horse training fraternity and the eminent Victorian novelist, Charles Dickens. A mile to the north you will find Old Malton, with its historic stone houses and St Mary’s Church, the only Gilbertine Priory in use in England.

CHRISTMAS IN KIRKBYMOORSIDE

CHRISTMAS IN

Kirkbymoorside With its high street ascending a gentle gradient, there’s something for everyone in Kirkbymoorside shops and businesses this Christmas. Kirkbymoorside is a town that has used its historic buildings to great effect: old banks are now cafes, the old gasworks in now a hairdressers and the chemist doubles-up as an off-licence. The annual Christmas Market is a muchanticipated event and this year takes place on Saturday 28th November. Food and craft stalls will be situated in the Memorial Hall 11am to 3pm, children’s activities will take place in the library from 10.30am while Santa will be in his Grotto from 12noon to 2pm. Christmas carols will be sung at 3.30pm with the Light Switch On at 4pm. The town is host of many skilled traders and craftsmen, including joiners and builders, so whatever you need this Christmas, look to Kirkbymoorside.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA FREE OF CHARGE - BOOKINGS NOW BEING TAKEN The Lottery funded camera is available locally, free of charge, to help you find out exactly where heat is escaping from your home in cold weather, so helping save money and fuel. It could be useful if you are thinking about making improvements to wall and roof insulation. KMEG volunteers have been using the camera in the Kirkbymoorside area since 2012, from late autumn through the winter months into early spring. The best weather conditions are cloudy, dry and cold! The camera picks up heat, rather than light like a normal camera. It’s surprising how much heat can be lost around windows, doors and skirting boards, up the chimney of an unused fireplace, as well as through poorly insulated roofs and walls. This example shows how heat is being lost through a bay window and through the wall from a radiator under the window. Inexpensive solutions could be using thicker curtains and putting foil on the wall behind the radiator to reflect heat back into the room. You choose if you want any pictures taken. They can be emailed or printed for you. There is no charge for the camera, but if you’d like to make a small donation towards insurance and calibration of the camera, that would be most welcome. To book the camera: email Helen Gundry at helenspost@hotmail.co.uk or phone 01751 432447. We can then fix the best time to call round with the camera. For more information about the camera and thermal imaging, check our website www.kmsenvironmentgroup.org.uk/

GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS AT THE MILTON ROOMS, MALTON. 15 TO 23 JANUARY 2016

M

alton & Norton Musical Theatre Company are busy rehearsing for their 2016 production, Goldilocks and the Three Bears. Directed by Peter Melia, with Musical Direction from Ben Papworth and choreography by Rebecca Neacsu. Sophie Sawdust’s Spectacular Circus is failing, audiences are dwindling and Sophie is in debt to the evil money lender, Gasper Grey. Desperate to save the circus Sophie stumbles unknowingly upon Goldilocks and her friends the Three Bears, incorporating them as an act within the circus. To the delight of audiences and cast alike, the new act is a big hit and audience numbers rocket. This 2016 production of Stephen Duckham’s pantomime features Beth Armstrong in the lead role as Goldilocks, Neil Paylor as the Panto Dame Sophie Sawdust, Mia West (Ricky The Ringmaster), Ben Greenhough (Jocko the Clown), Matthew Hodsman-Summers (Tommy the Animal Trainer), Holly Hargreaves (Gloria the High Wire Performer), and Thomas Jennings as Gasper Grey the Evil Money Lender, with Mickey Moran and Alfie Thompson as his assistants, Swindle & Filch. The cast is completed by Father Bear (Barrie Elener), Mother Bear (Lauren Barker), Baby Bears (Eve Hargreaves and Charlie Fox), and Zarina (Michelle Carter). A singing chorus of supporting circus acts, the usual panto mix of great music, and dance, courtesy of Kirkham Henry School of Performing Arts combines with good old slapstick fun to make this show a must see in Malton next year. Tickets are £14 (adults) and £12 (concessions) and will be available online at Positickets.co.uk from early December 2015. In person ticket enquiries will be handled by Number 1 Health and Beauty, 1 Market St, Malton YO17 7LY, again from early December 2015. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 1st December

shapely firs. Your ideal tree will be there somewhere! At Dalby we offer so much more than just buying a tree, with a Santa’s grotto and whole range of activities for both little and big kids to get into the festive spirit!

Why should I buy a real Christmas tree from the Forestry Commission? The Forestry Commission only sells trees that are grown in a sustainable manner in the UK - for every tree harvested another is replanted.

Where are our Christmas trees grown? The trees sold at Dalby Forest are grown sustainably in the forest and travel less than 5 miles from the growing site. The trees are harvested between 6 and 10 years old and for every tree felled at least one is planted.

Environmental factors are considered carefully. The Forestry Commission endeavours to provide excellent quality trees, with good needle retention, in a range of species including the traditional Norway spruce, dense, bushy pines and

A Christmas Feast at The Milton Rooms

M

alton’s Milton Rooms is lining up a great seasonal feast of traditional Christmas music, children’s entertainment, Santa fun, a taste of Dickens and a new play in December. The Christmas programme opens with the joyful classic winter children’s story, The Little Match Girl. This is a fun, festive twist on the well-known tale told through puppets and song by the Moon on a Stick puppetry company. The beautiful, playful production, transforms the stage into a stunning snowy spectacle, complete with Christmas carols and audience interaction. It is ideal for children aged 3 and over, providing a perfect family alternative to the usual pantomime. The Little Match Girl is on Sunday, December 6. Tickets from the Milton Rooms are just £4 per child (with one adult free with each child).

The Great Malton Santa Fun Run 2015, raising funds for Ryedale Special Families, takes place in the Market Place on Sunday, December 13 with three runs for children and adults. The event is being followed by an afternoon of children’s Christmas activities and Santa’s grotto in the Milton Rooms. Fun run application forms will be available from Yorkshire Building 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Society in Malton or Pickering, or downloadable from www. ryedalespecialfamilies.org.uk. Headlining Malton’s first Dickensian Festival this Christmas will be BAFTA award-winning star of Harry Potter, Miriam Margolyes, in a onewoman show at the Milton Rooms on Friday, December 18.

of England’s foremost amateur chamber choirs. Its annual sell-out Carols by Candlelight concerts in York have become a highlight of the city’s Christmas diary. The choir’s debut at the Milton Rooms, with canapes from Malton Relish and fine wines, promises to be an unforgettable evening. Tickets are £15, (£10 for under 18s) including canapes.

Miriam has been a lifelong fan and scholar of Dickens and will bring alive the spirit of Dickens work and Malton’s links with one of his most popular books, A Christmas Carol. Tickets will be £10 (£4 for children). Festival organiser Clair ChallenorChadwick said: “The message of the book around caring for those less fortunate at Christmas is a beautiful one to spread during the festive season. Malton is a truly magical setting for the oldfashioned romance of Christmas.” There will be no better way to enter into the Christmas spirit than the Christmas Feast of traditional music with the York Chapter House Choir, which is celebrating its 50th birthday when it comes to the Milton Rooms on Saturday, December 19. The Chapter House Choir has built up a reputation as one of the North

And the family theme of Christmas is reflected in the new play in the Milton Rooms Studio on Friday, December 11. Written and directed by the Milton Rooms own programme organiser, Libby Pearson, and performed by the Pickering-based touring theatre company Clap Trap Productions. Broken, tells the emotional and engaging story of young Ellie returning to the family home after working overseas to find that she is no longer the centre of everyone’s world. Friendships, partnerships and family bonds are tested to their limits. Which of them will survive the impact? The style of the Clap Trap theatre company is ideally suited to the intimate atmosphere of the Studio and will bring audience and actors up close and personal. Tickets are £10.Tickets for all shows are available from the Milton Rooms box office or telephone 01653 696240.

Happy Christmas

FROM MALTON, NORTON & PICKERING CHURCHES

A Christmas message from Rt Rev Terence Drainey RC Bishop of Middlesbrough. he knew he was not the father. What does he do? As the result of a dream, he decides to marry her. But, that wasn’t the end of it. He had to leave his home just as the child was to be born and go to Bethlehem with Mary to obtain their official papers. The only place they could find to stay was a cow-shed behind a local hostelry. What a place to be born!

W

hat a privilege to be asked to write a Christmas message to you all in the Handy Mag! So here goes…. For me Christmas and Cribs go together: Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus, ox and donkey, shepherds and angels - the Holy Family gathered in the stable at Bethlehem. But let me set the scene as I see it in my mind’s eye. Joseph discovered that Mary, his fiancée was pregnant, and

I could continue with my version of the story, but I think you get the picture. The family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph might have been the Holy Family, but their life was not exempt from the sort of problems all families have to face. But what makes them different, or at least holy? At the heart of this particular family was God, in Jesus, the Son of God become man; but also the Spirit of God was living in Mary and Joseph. God dwelt in the midst

of the Holy Family, never far away from their thoughts and their way of life. Also they were a family of faith. Mary believed everything that the Lord had promised would happen, even when cold reason appeared to say differently. She trusted, she followed wherever He led. We too can have God right at the heart of everything we do. He does not have to be far removed from our way of life. We can invite the Spirit of God to live in our lives and begin to transform us. We know that in Jesus God is walking at our side each and every day. We can have faith, we can trust even though we might not be able to see the immediate outcome of things, even though we can’t at this moment see how God’s plan is going to work out. I wish you and yours a very joyful, peaceful and happy Christmas and all the very best for 2016. May God truly be with you this Christmastide.

Bringing Foot Comfort To Local Clients In Their Own Homes.

H

aving qualified with a BSc in Podiatry nearly 10 years ago, Richard Mason has extensive skills gained through his career with the NHS as a Specialist Podiatrist in the Ryedale area. As a podiatrist, Rich has expert specialist knowledge of lower limb conditions, with the ability to treat such conditions including diagnosis and treatment of diseases and disorders of the feet. He can also advise on the best treatment plan for foot problems. Through his expertise, Rich is able to bring foot comfort

and relief to his many local clients in the comfort of their own home. Rich says: “Often clients are not able to attend clinics due to location, health or preference. My service is a great way to benefit from foot care by a HPC registered and insured Chiropodist in the comfort of your own home. The services I offer can be help with cutting nails, painful calluses, Athlete’s Foot, corns and other foot conditions!”

“I tried to roughly add up the amount of feet I have seen over the years and it’s probably well over 60,000 feet which is staggering when I think about it! I get a great deal of satisfaction knowing that I have helped reduced discomfort and improved foot health and have had so many grateful clients thanking me for the difference I’ve made, which is very rewarding.”

hen and where is the best time for your child to have an orthodontic assessment?

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

This is a very contentious subject amongst general dentists, parents and orthodontists, most parents would like their child attended to as soon as possible, especially if they are being teased about their smile. About 20 years ago there was process called ’serial extraction’ where the child had several visits to the dentist and as the teeth became crowded they were removed. In reality this did little to improve the final outcome of treatment for the poor child as it was found to encourage the early eruption of the new teeth and thus compound the problem. This however may be the experience of many parents who now have young children themselves so they expect a similar process for their child. Today there is a trend to try to avoid extraction and wait and see how much space nature is going to provide. As dentists we are supposed to refer when the child has lost all of their baby teeth as the orthodontists book becomes jammed with patient who are too young to treat otherwise. Sometimes where it is glaringly obvious that there is never going to be enough room an earlier referral may be made. Patient may also seek a consultation on a private basis. NHS (free) orthodontics is only available to those children with more serious need where there is a functional problem stopping the teeth meeting properly with or without the appearance of the teeth being compromised. Where your child has a slightly twisted front tooth or irregularity they are unlikely to be seen as appropriate for NHS treatment. Your own dentist should be able to score them against an International Index of need and give you an idea if they will need to be seen privately or by the NHS. Again treatment is rarely provided if the brushing is poor or there is a recent history of decay.

DON’T LET THE CRIMINAL ENJOY CHRISTMAS AT YOUR EXPENSE ! Christmas is a busy time of the year for us all – including criminals! We know, however, that a high percentage of crime is opportunistic and can be prevented by us all taking some simple precautions and that little extra care, so below are a few tips for a crime free Christmas.

CHRISTMAS SHOPPING

• Never leave the engine running unattended to defrost – it makes it too easy for thieves to steal your car before you even start ! • Never leave your keys in the ignition whilst your vehicle is unattended • Always lock your car and make sure all windows are closed • Don’t leave any presents in full view – lock them away in the boot • Don’t leave valuables in the glove compartment – take mobile phones, satnavs etc with you as this is the first place many thieves look • Park your vehicle in a well lit area or in an attended car park, ideally with CCTV – look out for the Park Mark award logo for safer parking • Don’t carry large amounts of cash on you – be alert and ensure that your purse or wallet is secure and hidden from view • Don’t keep your cheque-book and card together either in the home or whilst shopping • Keep your PIN confidential and do not write it down – memorise it! • When purchasing goods with a card, ensure nobody can see the PIN numbers that you enter into the machine • If you are offered a quality product at a bargain price, ensure that the source is genuine and that the goods are not stolen – remember, if it sounds too good to be true, it most probably is ! • Upon returning home, place your car keys out of site and ideally upstairs where thieves cannot hook them through the letter-box and steal your car

YOUR HOME

• Check that all your security lights, alarm systems and locks are in good working order • Keep doors and windows locked at all times • Keep presents out of sight – large piles of gift wrapped goodies under the Christmas tree that are visible through a door or window are tempting to thieves! • Don’t leave empty boxes on display outside – discarded packaging advertises all the new purchases that you may have indoors! 70 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

• Don’t leave handbags laying around on display • Make it look as though someone is at home when you are going out for the evening – leave lights on and close the curtains to avoid advertising to the criminals what is worth stealing • If you are going on holiday over the Festive period, ask a friend, relative or neighbour to keep an eye on your property and to remove newspapers and post etc from where it can be seen on the doormat etc. Use a timer to activate lights at different times • Check that your home insurance adequately covers you for the value of goods in your home – including those expensive Christmas presents ! • Register expensive items with Immobilise or ensure that they are security marked with a product such as SmartWater Terry Wallis Chair - North Yorkshire Neighbourhood Watch Association District Lead - Ryedale Neighbourhood Watch www.nynhwa.co.uk

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

tape Silver Band have had another busy year which began with their Spring Concert at the Memorial Hall in April which featured the Junior Band and also performances on Sunday afternoons in July at Scarborough’s Peasholm Park and Filey Bandstand. The Band performed at two of the afternoon concerts on the green at Thornton Dale in August to very appreciative audiences and also

There was a well-attended concert in conjunction with the Kirk Theatre in September, and in October the Band played on Smiddy Hill Pickering over the War Weekend. For this year’s Remembrance period the Band supported the Royal British Legion at their Poppy Appeal Concert and in Pickering. On 28 November the Band will be playing at the Christmas lights switch-on in Pickering, followed by an afternoon at Burnby Hall in Pocklington at their Santa Special Day in December. Rehearsals are well underway for the Band’s own Annual Concert

MOTORING Ford Capri Mk III

By Kit Johnson The original Capri was launched in 1969 as a European alternative to the hugely successful Mustang. It was a big hit and Ford had shifted 1.2 million of the Mk I when production ended in 1974. The Mk II was more of a car for everyman with a bigger cabin and a practical hatchback, yet it didn’t recapture the success of the original, shifting less than half the numbers of the Mk I in its 4 year lifespan. By the time the Mk III came along in 1978, sales were in terminal decline, yet Ford persisted with it until 1986.

I was browsing through the catalogue for an upcoming classic car auction recently when I noticed something quite remarkable. There were several Ford Capris on offer; nothing too remarkable about that but it was the guide prices that caught my eye – these cars were expected to fetch between £15-19k. Has the humble Capri become an appreciating classic?

Prospect Design Cost-effective, professional

ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES

The thing is, everyone had a Capri. Terry from Minder had one as did Bodie and Doyle from the Professionals. My mum had one, so did several of my friends and I bought one myself. Even so, by the late 80s the Capri had become a bad joke and even ten years ago you couldn’t give them away. So why are they suddenly fetching big money? Part of it is the old adage that you don’t appreciate

RYEDALE • DECEMBER 2015 • ISSUE 116 what you’ve got till it’s gone. So many Capris were sent off to the scrap yard when they got old and tired that there are very few left; out of over 55,000 Fords on Autotrader last week, 4 were Capris. These ranged from a very sorry looking 1.6L for £3,500 to a fully restored 3.0S for £18,850. These cars don’t stay advertised for long either, give them a week and they’re gone. Another thing working in the Capri’s favour is the current vogue for all the things 70s and 80s - the Mk III fits the bill perfectly. Most of all though, it’s actually a very good car. The styling is of its era but has stood the test of time well; the long bonnet, muscular haunches and curvaceous side windows shout American muscle car and the effect is heightened by the twin headlights and low bonnet lip. Inside you sit low to the ground with the small steering wheel perfectly positioned, a panel of six instruments behind it and the long throw gear shift nicely to hand. There is a surprising amount of room in the cabin and the hatchback and folding rear seats add a fair degree of practicality. The engine choice consisted of 1.6 litre or 2.0 litre versions of Ford’s much loved Pinto engine or the 3.0 litre V6 Essex powerplant (it was made in Dagenham!) The 1.6 is best ignored but the 2.0

provides a decent amount of power, will rev all the way up to 7000rpm and is easy to tune. I’d go for the V6 though, it has a lovely soft burble, is hugely flexible and kicks out 140bhp – good for 125mph. Ford made a 3.0 Ghia which was well equipped and had an automatic gear box but the sportier 3.0S is the one to go for. Capris are notoriously light on the back and lairy power slides are an everyday event, particularly in the wet, but the steering is precise enough to hold everything together. The Capri is very well made, has reliable mechanicals and most of the parts including body panels are readily available. For this reason, it is worth buying a tatty runner for low money, sourcing your own parts and then paying for it to be restored; you should be able to pick up something for around the £4k mark. It’s even worth swapping in a 3.0 V6 to replace a Pinto or replacing an auto with a manual box. Then just keep it clean and think of all the money you’ve made.

across our region since being founded in 2007. In late October it added a new venue to the list when it sang a selection of Gilbert and Sullivan chorus and solo numbers as well as male voice classics for an appreciative audience in Cropton.

IT’S ALL-CHANGE FOR MALE CHOIR CHRISTMAS CONCERT

M

alton District Male Voice Choir’s Christmas concert has had to be switched after serious structural problems closed the local Methodist Church, forcing the popular group to seek both a new concert venue and a new home. The choir has now moved its regular 7.30pm Monday night practice sessions to the nearby Church Hall at Malton Baptist Church in Wells Lane. Its Christmas concert will now be in St Michael’s Church in Malton market place on Sunday December 13th at 3pm. The concert is for all ages and will feature the lively mix of well-known Christmas carols and music which the choir is now noted for, along with choir and guest solo contributions. It had originally been planned for Malton Methodist Church on December 6th, but the word in early November was that assessment and repair of the structural defects discovered just recently in the Listed building could take some time. The male voice choir is new to the Baptist Church Hall but no stranger to St Michael’s and has performed there several times. It is also well-used to venue changes and has sung in many towns and villages

80 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Early on Christmas Eve it will sing for guests and visitors for the second year running at Malton’s Talbot Hotel where a programme of carols and Christmas music is planned.

THE CHOIR IS ALWAYS ON THE LOOK-OUT FOR NEW SINGERS OF ALL AGES, WITH OR WITHOUT EXPERIENCE BUT OF COURSE WITH SOME SINGING ABILITY.

Dream on...

I

’ve always been a bit of a dreamer. Once I even sailed around the Med on my own motor cruiser, replete with jaunty little chopper for excursions for lazy lobster lunches. And then I woke up! Sod’s law, none of my more ‘interesting’ day dreams have ever transpired to be anything more than that. Thankfully however, a lot of my horticultural ones have, and that’s the beauty of gardening – our dreams and grand ideas tend to be a little more achievable and, with a bit of lateral thinking, can be adapted to achieve the same result. Take the dreamy landscape pictured… Less than a mile from the bustling city centre of Sheffield, it may be slightly larger than your average plot but it is still a garden and everything that is in flower has been grown from seed. No fancy fertilisers, no expensive plants and no hard landscaping. All this has been done in a year and this is exactly what anyone can achieve with a modicum of effort to prepare the ground and keep down invasive weed species. Provided you choose the right mixes, you can enjoy a succession of colour from spring to late autumn; this is a dream that can easily become reality! The other benefit of this naturalistic style of planting is that not only is it an uber cool style statement, it is also a massive hit with wildlife and will tick every biodiversity box ever invented! As a designer, I have to be open to other people’s dreams and try and turn them into something which is both workable and appealing. I also have to try and enlighten them as to what is actually possible within a given space and within whatever budget constrains them. This, unfortunately, is the most difficult part; like most things that involve ‘getting someone in;’ it’s not a cheap process! However, there are always alternative ways to achieve these dreams and if you just want a garden you can completely chill out in without the stresses of weeding, cutting, strimming - but at the same time knowing that you have the most colourful, adventurous and buzzing garden on your street. by Jonathan Wild, Gardener and Dreamer! www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 81

A CHRISTMAS MESSAGE FROM RYEDALE DOG RESCUE... Every year people continue to give puppies as Christmas presents. Sadly many of these puppies will end up as unwanted gifts and abandoned through no fault of their own. We rescue as many as we can but when the council pounds are full, a number of dogs will be destroyed with many not even reaching their first birthday. Please remember that owning a dog is a big responsibility and EVERY dog deserves a loving forever home. And don’t forget that rescue dogs make fabulous family pets, so if you do decide that you do have the time, patience and love to welcome a canine addition to your family then why not give a rescue dog a second chance at happiness?

DOG OF THE MONTH: STAN Stan is a 4 year old happy staffie who has been returned to us for re-homing after being in a home for nearly three years. Stan loves people but can sometimes be a little choosey about his canine companions. He loves to run and play with his toys and really does deserve a loving forever home. Looking for an ideal Christmas present for a dog lover? RDR calendars on sale now featuring some of the dogs we rescued this year. Ryedale Dog Rescue would like to wish all their volunteers, foster carers, adopters and of course our dogs a very Merry Christmas and a Happy 2016!

COMING EVENTS - PLEASE HAVE A LOOK AT THE HANDY MAG EVENTS PAGES FOR OUR FUTURE EVENTS. For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you) www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 85

Vincent came to us as a long term stray, this poor lad had been living rough for quite some time. He was a little scared when he first arrived but now he has settled in he is ever so friendly and enjoys a fuss. He would make a great pet for a family with older children. Lola’s owner moved house and couldn’t take her with them so she is now looking for a new home to call her own. She would prefer a home with a yard or garden as she enjoys going outside and can use a catflap to come and go as she pleases. She needs an adult only, experienced home.

CHRISTMAS HAZARDS by Lucy Nowell MRCVS Station House Vets

Christmas can be a busy and chaotic time in our homes with large quantities of food and presents left unattended (or sneaked to our pets by well meaning visitors!).

TOXIC FOODS: CHOCOLATE Chocolate contains theobromine which can cause hyperexcitability, tremours, convulsions and problems with the heart in dogs. The risk is greater the higher the cocoa content and consumption of even a small amount of dark chocolate is potentially toxic. Pets are unlikely to unwrap the chocolate and though wrappers aren’t generally toxic, they could cause a blockage in the gut. GRAPES AND DRIED VINE FRUIT Grapes and their dried products are toxic to dogs. Ingestion of even a small amount can cause kidney failure. Remember they are a component of many seasonal foods like christmas pudding, cake and mince pies as well as in various chocolates! ONIONS Onions, leeks, shallots and chives can cause toxicity even when cooked. They can cause vomiting and diarrhoea but also damage to red blood cells causing anaemia, which may not be seen until several days later. So no sage and onion stuffing please! LEFTOVERS Please be careful where you leave your christmas dinner remnants (and make sure nobody can raid the bin!) Cooked poultry bones can splinter and cause injury and obstructions in the gut. Mouldy foods including cheese and bread can release toxins that are harmful to dogs. CHRISTMAS PLANTS Poinsettia, Holly, Mistletoe, Ivy. Ingestion of parts of these plants by pets may cause gastrointestinal upset and irritation of the mouth causing salivation. CHRISTMAS TREE Ingestion could cause a tummy upset or more likely discomfort from the sharpness of the needles!

CHRISTMAS GIFTS: SILICA GEL Often in a small sachet in the packaging of shoes, handbags with the label ‘do not eat’ – this is considered low toxicity! CHRISTMAS DECORATIONS Not necessarily toxic but could cause obstructions in the gastrointestinal tract, just consider hanging them out of reach including tinsel ! POT POURRI This can cause considerable tummy upset in dogs that can last several days, and the result may not be fragrant! If you are worried that your pet may have eaten any of the above please call for advice. Prompt treatment can be very effective. One last thing – make sure your pets have got somewhere quiet to hang out if it all gets a bit busy, cats and older dogs may appreciate a bit of peace (as may you actually!)
