W

elcome to the February edition. With the excitement of the New Year long gone and resolutions maybe not working out as they were intended, February can be the hardest month. February is rich in excuses and temptation, with the nights still long and dark making any evening in front of a warm fire, eating comfort food with woolly socks on so much easier. I often wonder about those brave people battling all weathers cycling or running up and down the Wolds about our village, and question why and marvel at their motivation! As with many I guess after the festive excesses, health and fitness are on my mind. I confess that the best I can usually do is some more vigorous dog walking and a deep dedication to never taking up jogging or wearing lycra. Walking the dogs is not a lot but small changes in what we do make a difference, and the hills of the Wolds become that little bit less challenging with some moderate application. And of course the dogs are super appreciative of a longer walk. Then there is always that rowing machine at home that my other half bought ‘the family’ last year – hmmm! So thoughtful! February is very much a month that can be seen as a pint glass half empty, but with the bulbs emerging and early flowers already out, spring is on the way and the year is still young enough to kick start any lagging conviction. Luckily, as always, we at the Handy Mag are on-hand with lots of local businesses and events in this month’s magazine at the ready to motivate and lessen the pain in making the year happen for you! The biggest excitement over Christmas in our house was our connection to superfast broadband. I always wondered what all the fuss was about but I hadn’t realised how much difference it would make. Streaming films, games, working from home... Even my technophobe other half is impressed! If it’s in your village, get connected! See page 65 for information on how. Well done to Mrs Best of Swinton for winning the competition in the December edition. Until next month…

Make tracks to Lowfield G arage this winter If you hate getting out of bed and venturing outside during the winter months spare a thought for your poor car. On the 2nd of December last year the AA attended an average of 1150 breakdowns every hour! The cold and icy conditions mean it’s not just you that needs an extra layer or two of protection. To ensure you and your family stay safe on the roads this winter we’ve designed our Winter Safety Check to provide that extra protection. And because we feel that everyone should stay safe this winter we’ve decided to make it completely free.

Ruby Racing Celebration for Helmsley Horse Races There will be at least six races and with the stunning view of Duncombe Park House acting as the backdrop, there is really no finer place in the English countryside to be. Bookmakers will be in attendance so those who fancy a flutter can attempt to leave in profit, while the ladies of the Sinnington Hunt will be serving a hog roast, homemade soup, delicious cakes, and other refreshments.

H

elmsley Horse Races will be celebrating 40 years at Duncombe Park when the meeting takes place on Sunday 15th February. Organised by the Sinnington Hunt, the Helmsley Horse Races are a traditional form of point-to-pointing which is confined to amateur trainers and jockeys. Horses and riders will be taking each other on to see who can complete the three miles and 18 fences in the quickest time.

Alternatively picnicking is another great tradition at point-to-points. Racegoers can travel to the meeting on foot or by the car load and entertain guests from the comfort of their car boots before racing starts, or nipping back in between races for a little warmer! The social hospitality remains at the very heart of this racing sport. Racegoers can keep up to date with the action as information about all the days’ runners and riders are detailed in the racecard which will be available to purchase on the day. Admission to the meeting is £10 per person and everyone is welcome to this action packed, fun day out in a beautiful rural setting. The first race will take place at 12.30pm and the postcode for satellite navigation is YO62 5EB.

5 TAX AVOIDANCE MYTHS EXPOSED

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

Investing in an avoidance scheme that doesn’t work is illegal. Oh no it isn’t. It might not work and it might prove expensive but it’s not illegal. A scheme with an HMRC DOTAS number (Disclosure of Tax Avoidance Schemes) is approved. Don’t you believe it. HMRC dreamed up DOTAS to give them the heads up on emerging tax avoidance schemes. A reference number is no guarantee that the scheme is approved. Or will work.

any people worry about organising their affairs tax efficiently. Much of this is down to media nonsense that tax avoidance is illegal. Here, I expose five popular tax avoidance myths:

M

Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion are the same. I assumed everyone knew this. Tax Evasion (i.e. failing to declare something that’s taxable) is illegal. Tax avoidance – arranging your affairs within the law to pay as little tax as possible is not only legal but perfectly sensible. Who would purposefully pay more tax than necessary? But most of you do.

Tax avoidance is illegal. No it’s not. Many tax avoidance strategies are not only approved by the Government, but were designed by them to encourage investment.

So you can carry on contributing to the estimated £4.7 billion UK taxpayers waste every year. Or you can get a grip and start making your money work for you.

A transaction designed only to avoid tax is illegal. Wrong. Pension Schemes, ISAs, Enterprise Investment Schemes and Venture Capital Trusts are all designed to avoid tax and all are perfectly legal.

A GOOD READ By Willow Coby

The Unlikely Pilgrimage of Harold Fry

Gargoylz: Get up to Mischief

By Rachel Joyce Retirement is meant to be relaxing, isn’t it? You do what you love doing, and enjoy yourself. But what if you suddenly receive a letter out of the blue? A woman who worked in your office many years ago has cancer and is dying. She just wants you to know. This touches you for reasons you can’t quite explain, so you write her a note to say that you are sorry to hear that. Putting on your coat and your yacht shoes you leave with the note. Your destination? The post box. Just as far as the end of the road.

By Burchett and Vogler If you thought your time at primary school was exciting, then you have nothing on nine-year-old Max and his best friend Ben. Their school is next to an old church and to their delight, they discover that the stone figures on the church come to life. In this, the second book in the series, Toby, a mischievous young gargoyle with the ability to fly, manages to create havoc at the school, much to the disgust of Mrs Hogsbottom who, after an incident with a skateboard, reminds pupils of school rule number 27: the head teacher must not be run over without permission.

And so starts Harold Fry’s extraordinary journey: 627 miles in 87 days. With no plan, other than to reach Queenie, he sets off on a journey of faith. Scribbling on the note he tells her to wait for him. This debut novel from radio and TV writer, Rachel Joyce, will take you on a gentle journey with Harold and the various people he meets along the way.

Max spends most of his time trying to keep Toby and the other gargoylz under control: not easy when they can make themselves invisible and so avoid all the blame! When he suggests that Toby runs a bath to clean himself up after eating a packet of chocolate biscuits, it’s not difficult to imagine the rather wet chaos that ensues.

Totally unprepared for what he will encounter, his faith in positive thinking keeps him going as he learns more about his life and relationships with his wife and son.

Written for readers age 6+, with an interactive website to explore the stories and characters more, this is sure to keep both boys and girls engrossed, with the added bonus of many more books to enjoy.

EMILY... ON ROADS Being a learner driver is tough. Like many people do, when I got behind the wheel of a car I expected to be able to drive immediately. Having grown up with both of my parents driving me everywhere, I naively thought that I had almost subconsciously picked up the ability and that my lessons would simply be a refinement of my ‘skills’. My presumptions could not have been further from the truth. Five minutes into my first lesson, I stalled. Then, I stalled again. After two horrible minutes of me sitting in the middle of the road in a car that seemingly would not start, I had to swap seats with my instructor just so we could get going again. I had a lot to learn. Firstly, there is the cost of lessons. There was a time where learning to drive was a rite of passage, with teenagers starting to work towards their licence straight after their 17th birthday. In the news recently, a report claimed that the cost of getting a learner road ready, including insurance and a car, comes to a whopping £5000! This cost came as a shock to my Dad, who when he takes me out driving insists his teaching methods are better anyway. Typical! As our family car is a people carrier, my Dad instead takes me out in his van. Compared to this, my instructor’s car feels like a luxury to drive, with the absence of rattling tools and a stiff gear stick! There are many things that no amount of teaching can prepare you for. Driving in the dark terrified me at first, winding unlit country roads posing just as much of a hazard to learners in rural areas as things like traffic and busy junctions in big cities. This is only heightened in the winter months, when the weather adds to the dangerous road conditions. With all these things combined, I have only recently realised that learning to drive does not end at passing your test. Driving is about gaining experiences and applying things you have learnt already to different scenarios. As my practical exam comes ever nearer, I look forward to finally being able to take to the road independently as a fully qualified driver. Hopefully this time in my own little car, and not my Dad’s rattling old van! Emily

OVEN BAKED AND READY FOR YOUR HOME!

C

orners Warmers pride themselves on supplying the driest logs ready for your fire. The timber is predominantly sourced from Yorkshire and is transported to their farm in Easingwold where it is seasoned at least 12 months prior to it then getting sawn up into logs. The logs are then cleaned and stored in the log barn before delivery to your home. This results in logs which are never more than 20% moisture, produce a good heat output and burn without the sparks! However if you would like an even cleaner, hotter burn then Corners Warmers can now provide a new product ‘kiln dried logs’. These are so dry they contain as little as 15% moisture or less. Andrew speaks from experience when he says, “We have burnt these logs on our own woodburner and were impressed to find that we did not even need kindling or firelighters to start the fire going. We just placed the kiln dried logs on a bed of newspaper, ignited it and the logs commenced burning immediately”.

Kiln dried logs not only burn extremely hot but they are also a ‘clean’ burn so they do not produce as much soot. The kiln was installed during the summer of 2014. A massive 24 cubic metres of logs can be dried in the kiln at any one time. To demonstrate its capability: If you were to put freshly felled logs (which could be as much as 70% moisture) into the kiln it would take only 3 days to dry the logs to only 15% moisture. The kiln is heated by a woodchip biomass boiler. The woodchip used in the boiler is a by-product of the wood processing. There is therefore no waste from the conversion of the felled timber, to the dry logs that are delivered to your door!

LEON THE LIONS MUSINGS (AKA LION PRESIDENT NICK SIMPSON) Welcome to our new regular column keeping you up to date with what the Lions do in your community. In these times of Government cut backs the assistance the Lions provide locally to individuals and organisations has never been more urgently needed. It will come as no surprise to you that our motto is ‘We Care’. For those who are familiar with the Lions it’s probably through the Santa Sleigh that visits your neighbourhood throughout December, but who are the Lions, what do they do and why? You might be interested to know there are two clubs in your locality, Ryedale Lions Club and Malton, Norton & District Club. Lions Clubs International (LCI) is a service organisation much like the Round Table and the Rotary Club and was established around the same time. There are now 46,000 Lions clubs around the world with 1.35million Lion members spread across more than 200 countries.

The Lions Club is non-secular non-political service organisation and has been referred to as ‘one of the leading NGOs in world’. It was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize in 2007 and is the recipient of countless awards from Governments. Lionssponsored initiatives are frequently the first to arrive at the scene of a disaster. All the monies Lions raise goes towards good causes and not a

single penny is spent on administration or running costs. The vast majority of funds raised are spent locally, in our own community. Of course there are high profile organisations we all support such as Ryedale Special Families, Yorkshire Air Ambulance and our famous Fish & Chips to the elderly in winter, but there are less newsworthy items where Lions work quietly behind the scenes to assist those who fall through the Social Security net. Just before Christmas a lady could not afford the fare to visit her poorly child in hospital at Great Ormond Street and the Lions made this possible. The Malton & Norton & District Lions Club is an eclectic mix of individuals, men and women with diverse backgrounds and ages, even a professional bee keeper. We meet monthly usually at The Old Lodge where we plan our fundraising and social events and discuss requests for support. The Lions membership fee is just £65p.a. We don’t just help people and raise money; we enjoy wide range of social activities. This month we are holding a Burns supper, where a Piper will pipe in the haggis and we will take a party of elderly folk to the Malton pantomime. Working with the Lions looks great on your C.V and it’s well documented that helping people and volunteering is good for your wellbeing. If you would like to know the Lions do locally, please call Lion President Nick on 01944 758047 at home. 4TH ANNUAL YORKSHIRE CAJUN AND ZYDECO FESTIVAL, MALTON

13, 14, 15 MARCH The Yorkshire Cajun and Zydeco Festival is back at the Milton Rooms! The event has become recognised throughout the UK and Europe as one of the leading festivals outside the U.S. to feature the music, dance and food of the bayous and prairies of South West Louisiana. Local people are discovering one of the best kept secrets of the music and dance world and are joining enthusiasts from all over the UK and from Europe on the dance floor. After the success of last year’s ‘Mardi Gras’ Sunday, the 2015 festival will keep the Mardi Gras theme all weekend and the Milton Rooms will also be decorated for the duration of the Festival! And for the first time, this year the Festival will coincide with the Monthly Food Market on the Saturday and will incorporate a Cajun/Creole food demonstration and a parade of costumes in the Market Square. There will be dance and instrument workshops, music sessions and Cajun food will be on sale at the Milton Rooms. Centre stage of course will be the live bands with the full line up to be confirmed but already booked to return are ‘The Bluebell Cajun Dance Band’ from Scotland, ‘Rough Chowder’ from the South of England and making their UK debut, from France, ‘La Gang du Queteux’. There will be dancing on the amazing sprung dance floor at The Milton Rooms with plenty of room for dancers and for those who prefer to sit and watch the bands and the dancing! ith its new offices and reception area in Railway Street Malton, Kappa’s Cars can get you from door to door in spotlessly clean cars and for competitive fares. Kappa’s Cars can do airport drop-offs and pickups, shopping trips, days out, contract work, and party night bookings, all in a warm, safe vehicle after a night out with friendly, experienced drivers. With an 8-seater minibus and up to four other cars on the road, you can either call the Kappa team on 01653 699999, or go to their offices at 6-8 Railway Street, Malton. Glenn Lewis, also known as Kappa, and co-owner David Collins opened their offices in October and have had a busy Christmas and New Year. Glenn said: “Opening our offices was a natural progression for our business. Our offices are comfortable and very handy. Friendly staff will order you a taxi, as all our drivers have excellent knowledge of the area.

“We also undertake factory bookings for shift-workers, offer a courier service and we can help people get about the area for a day or after a night out.” And with Ryedale being such a rural area, it is worth keeping Kappa’s Cars telephone number in your phone so you can call them night and day, as they run a 24-hour service. Glenn explained: “While it is a good idea to book a taxi in advance, we know that’s not always possible, so don’t hesitate to give us a call when you need us.” So as 2015 begins, Kappa’s Cars can help you get from A to B, 24-7!

CARING FOR YOUR HOME This means that they can provide the full range of fitted bedrooms and kitchens, general joinery such as doors and flooring, painting and decorating and general building work. They’ll also happily take care of smaller jobs you might not normally find a builder willing to do, such as clean guttering, fix a doorknob, powerwash a drive and, for their elderly or vulnerable customers, even change a lightbulb. Once, Steve helped a customer stack hay!

F

ather and son team, Steve and Jodie Calladene, of Calladene’s Home and Property Services, have many years’ experience of looking after people’s homes. In fact, they look after their customers’ homes almost as well as they look after their own – because that’s the philosophy they bring to work every day. Their services encompass, in Steve’s words, “everything that can be done to a house, from top to bottom.”

Steve has been operating as Yorkshire Home & Property Services for over 20 years and has recently been joined in the business by his son Jodie and felt that a name change was in order. As Calladene’s Home & Property Services, Steve and Jodie are a highly experienced team with a solid reputation and there is very little they can’t do – even awkward or impossible problems that may at first look very worrying usually have a solution. The most important value Steve and Jodie live by when it comes to customer service is behaving with integrity and they genuinely care about their customers and their homes.

In fact, most of our customers end up becoming our friends.” says Steve. “We never allow a job’s cost to rise above the original quote without speaking to the customer about it first. PLAYING FAIR What is Fairtrade Fortnight and why do we need it?

Fairtrade fortnight takes place this year from 23 February to 8 March 2015, and aims to continue to raise awareness and change behaviour around this important topic. Research shows that whilst 78% of the UK population recognise the Fairtrade Mark, over 50% still do not actively choose Fairtrade products. Fairtrade is about getting better prices, working conditions and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers. It’s about supporting the development of thriving farming and worker communities, so that they have more control over their futures and protecting the environment in which they live and work. It is now possible to buy around over 4,500 products officially branded Fairtrade including: tea, coffee, bananas, chocolate, gold, flowers, cotton and sugar. Sadly however, only 1.2% of cocoa and 10% of tea globally are traded on Fairtrade terms. Did you check the packaging for the Fairtrade logo when you last bought some tea?

As a pensioner... ...you can redeem this voucher for

10% OFF any product every Wednesday. On production of this advertisement.

8 Easy Ways to Cut Your Heating Oil Costs This Winter With fuel poverty on the rise and cold weather just around the corner, energy efficiency is more important than ever. If you’re on heating oil and would like to make your supply go further this winter, check out our useful tips for easy ways to stay warm for longer! 1. INSULATE

60% of the heat that escapes from your home is lost through the walls and roof. By insulating your property, using draft excluders and even closing your curtains in the evening, you can retain heat and reduce your fuel use.

2. SHOP AROUND

You might have a regular energy supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil.

7. BLEED YOUR RADIATORS

By removing excess air from your central heating system, you can make sure that your boiler isn’t working harder than necessary (and burning more fuel than necessary) to heat your home.

8. PROTECT YOUR TANK

As winter creeps in, heating oil thefts increase. By using CCTV, installing a security light or adding a padlock to the opening of your tank, you can take steps to deter thieves and keep your oil supply safe.

3. GRAB A GADGET

Pop an insulation panel behind your radiators to reflect heat back into the room, or invest in a radiator booster, which will circulate any warm air that would have been lost behind the radiator, around your home.

4. ADD AN ADDITIVE

As well as upgrading your fuel, oil additives can help to improve the efficiency of your boiler, which in turn reduces the amount of oil required to heat your home.

5. BOOK A SERVICE

The best way to make sure that your boiler is working efficiently (and not using more oil than necessary to heat your home) is to have it serviced annually. Book a service with an OFTEC registered technician through BoilerJuice, to make sure that your boiler is in full working condition, before the cold weather hits.

6. DIAL IT DOWN

It’s important to stay warm during winter, but by throwing on an extra jumper and turning your thermostat down by just one degree, you can cut your fuel use by up to 10%!

COOKING

LEMON ALMOND CAKE

Yummy...this one’s a family favourite.

Dollop the cake mixture into the lined tin. Bake for 45 minutes until golden. To test it, insert a metal skewer. If the skewer comes out clean, the cake is cooked. If not, the cake needs a few minutes more. Remove from the oven. For the syrup, stir the Demerara sugar into the lemon juice...it will only partially dissolve, but there is no need to heat it. Prick the top of the cake with the skewer or a sharp knife and spoon the syrup over the cake. Leave to cool.

INGREDIENTS: Cake • 200g unsalted butter • 200g Demerara sugar • 90g plain flour • 90g ground almonds • Half tsp baking powder • Zest of 1 large, unwaxed lemon • 4 large eggs Syrup • 2 tbsps Demerara sugar • Juice 1 large unwaxed lemon Set oven to 160°C / Gas Mark 3 Line a loaf tin (25cm x 11cm x 7cm) with greaseproof paper.

METHOD: Sieve the flour with the baking powder and mix in the ground almonds. Grate the lemon zest and add this to the mix too. Beat the eggs lightly then add to the creamed butter and sugar, a little at a time. Don’t worry if it curdles a little. Gently fold in the flour, almonds and baking powder with a large metal spoon.

If you’re not worried about your waistline you really can have your cake and eat it. What by Christine Parker most people fail to realise is BDS (GDC 72136) that tooth decay is related to how often we consume food or drink and not how much we have. As a profession we do not always manage to get this message across to the patient, so after a course of treatment we have patients who return after a few years with more holes. If you have 3 sugars in your tea it will have a similar affect to half a teaspoon (or less) on your teeth, if you are busy person that has sips of your drink, or graze through the day instead of meals it will have a very damaging effect in the long term. To reduce your risk of dental decay we recommend the following. • Avoid fizzy drinks as they are very acidic and dissolve tooth enamel including the sugar free ones. • Carbonated water can be as bad for the same reason. • Take your tea or coffee without sugar or use a sweetener. • For children try not to encourage a ‘sweet tooth’, plain milk or water are best to hydrate your child. • Try to encourage a meal habit. Dried fruit and shoot type drinks can also cause tooth decay. • Try to eat at mealtimes, this will lead to your teeth being under ‘acid attack’ for approximately 5 hours a day, each time you have something in between this will attack your teeth for a further hour and a half. • If you really do crave something sweet try to have your treat straight after your meal, it will not lengthen the time of the attack: that way you really can have your cake and eat it. If you would like specific advice on how to reduce your decay call Georgina for an appointment at.

HE WHO HAS EARS...

at Salon 17 by Caroline Maw

Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church

Are you a good listener? In a recent survey the top tip given by two thousand married people to a successful long-term relationship was good communication. I am convinced the art of communication often lies more in the determination of the hearer to hear than the ability of the speaker to speak. As I prepared to meet with a couple who would soon be married, I was reminded that just because words have been spoken, we can’t assume we have been heard, if we have been heard we can’t assume we have been understood and if we have been understood we can’t assume that they agree! Talking is easy but to really communicate we must learn to become effective listeners. Arguably one of the most influential teachers of all time would sometimes conclude his teaching with the phrase ‘He who has ears, let him hear’. It was an invitation to go deeper, to question and explore the meaning of his words to discover the point to his teaching. He taught with parables, often humorous stories using familiar everyday situations but often with little explanation. His authority, message and fame spread far and wide; causing huge crowds to travel miles and miles by foot and even boat to hear him speak. Captivated by every word, his audience would even forget to eat; keen to never miss a word to learn and grow in knowledge and wisdom. Imagine being there, an eye witness, listening to his teaching for the first time. Imagine the noise of the crowd as they tussled for a prime position to view the teacher; Jesus in action. Let me share one of the most famous parables he taught so we can consider what his timeless words may be saying to us today: ‘A farmer went out to sow his seed. As he was scattering the seed, some fell along the path, and the birds came and ate it up. Some fell on rocky places, where it did not have much soil. It sprang up quickly, because the soil was shallow. But when the sun came up, the plants were scorched, and they withered because they had no root. Other seed fell among thorns, which grew up and choked the plants. Still other seed fell on good soil, where it produced a crop – a hundred, sixty or thirty times what was sown. Whoever has ears, let them hear.’ 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

STRUGGLING WITH YOUR NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS - WANT SOME HELP? New Year Resolutions – remember them? Many of us make them with great intentions and determination and do very well for a few days but we just can’t maintain that level of motivation. If this sounds like you, you are not alone. Research suggests that a huge 9 out of 10 of us have given up our new year goals by now. Worst still we saddle ourselves with guilt on top of this too! Local Clinical Hypnotherapist Helen Priestley is keen to get the message out about the power of Hypnotherapy and getting you back on track. “When we want to make a change in our lives, we often rely on our conscious minds. Hypnotherapists work with the unconscious mind which is where our habits and behaviours are stored. By working with a client’s unconscious mind, change can happen quickly and permanently.” Helen says, “Clients who wish to stop smoking often only need 1 or 2 sessions to become a non-smoker.

M.V.Mobility

Est. 2003

Including Warranty & After Sales Service

They quickly, often in a couple of weeks, see a return on their investment not to mention the health benefits too.” “Hypnotherapy also has a very good track record for weight loss. I give individual support to each client and then design a bespoke Hypnotherapy plan to enable the client to lose weight steadily and safely. Because we are engaging the unconscious part of the brain, clients usually find this easier and more enjoyable.” Helen has many satisfied clients who can also vouch for Hypnotherapy and she has many testimonials on her website: www.ryedalehypnotherapy.co.uk So if you need help with these or other issues such as anxiety, phobias, pain relief or would like to find out more about Hypnotherapy, give Helen a call for a no-obligation chat on 07866 819556 or 01653 699667.

Keep an eye on this page and our website for updates. Sadly as predicted, many dogs have been abandoned over the festive period and we will aim to rescue as many as we can afford, so if you are busy writing your New Year’s resolutions why not resolve to support Ryedale Dog Rescue and help us to save more dogs lives? We believe that ‘saving the life of one dog may not change the world but the world will surely change for that one dog.’ So if you would like to find out how you can help us or would like to make a donation please call us on the number below.

DOG OF THE MONTH - ROO

Roo is a very handsome lad and is approximately two years old. He’s a little timid around men when first meeting but soon comes out of his shell when he realises that he’s safe. Roo is very responsive to food/ treats so reward based training would be the way to go with this lovely lad and he appears fine around other dogs. If you think that you may be able to offer Roo a loving forever home and would like to find out more about him give us a call for an informal chat on 07581 324153.

For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue and the dogs that we have currently looking for loving forever homes please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or call us on 07581 324153. MOTORING TOYOTA RAV4

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk

@carwriteups

FAST FACTS

• Max speed: 115mph • 0-62 mph: 10.0 secs • Combined mpg: 42.2 • Engine: 2231cc 4 cylinder 16valve turbo diesel • Max. power (bhp): 148 at 3600 rpm • Max. torque (Ib/ft): 250 at 2800 rpm • CO2: 176 g/km • Price: £29,305 on the road The 1994 Geneva motor show signalled the arrival of a new kind of vehicle, one that would revolutionize the world motor market. At the time few people could have predicted the effect the Toyota RAV4 would make. The initial Recreational Activity Vehicle with 4-wheel drive (hence RAV4) opened up a new sector for compact, manoeuvrable sport utility vehicles (SUVs). Toyota had unpresumptuous aspirations for its new car, expecting worldwide sales of only around 4,500 models. When 8,000 orders swamped the Japanese automaker in the first four weeks alone, production volumes had to be doubled. To begin with, it was available only as a three-door with a 2.0-litre petrol engine and either five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. Measuring just 3.96m long (little more than today’s Toyota Yaris), it was unlike anything else at the time. The public had an appetite for the new kid on the block, however, and in 1995 RAV4’s first full year on sale – almost 6,800 were sold, quickly establishing it as the fourth best-selling car in Toyota’s 14-strong British line-up. Twenty years on, and the RAV4 is almost unrecognisable. That’s because the compact SUV marketplace has evolved and matured in line with customers’ changing requirements and preferences. Generally speaking, two decades ago, this type of car was regarded as a substitute to sporty hatchbacks and coupes. Today its popularity is among families wanting a more fun car over multipurpose vehicles (MPVs) and estates. Over the years, Toyota has worked hard to keep the model firmly at the heart of its segment, without forfeiting the entertaining-to-drive quality that defined the original RAV4. 58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

When it came to creating the latest model, Toyota talked to existing RAV4 customers around the globe to understand what was best about their car. They named its manoeuvrability, ease of access, lofty view of the road ahead, ingenious packaging, versatility and reassuring capability, even when the going gets tough. As a result, 2014’s RAV4 points towards an even stronger focus on family use. The result is a car that is more refined with better exterior styling, a more airy cabin and load-space, greater comfort and higher levels of safety. The only drawback with the current RAV4 is the old-fashioned interior. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not a major issue – but it is noticeable all the same. The car is undoubtedly luxurious, especially in ‘Invincible’ 2.2 D4D Auto guise, but the cabin still looks at least a decade old. It’s not poor quality or anything. In fact it all looks very hard-wearing. It’s mainly the switchgear that looks really dated. Behind the wheel, much of that is forgotten once the pure pleasure of driving takes over. The RAV4 is smooth and gracefully punchy. Indeed, its all-wheel drive capability is more sophisticated than ever before. Toyota’s Integrated Active Drive System has been developed to offer a more engaging “sport” mode, with gadgetry to automatically adjust the amount of twisting power distributed between the front and rear axles. It’s easy to see why the RAV4 was, and is, such a hit. It is undoubtedly thanks to this car that the SUV market developed from a niche to become a vital feature of the motoring majority. Winter Dawn The rookery clamours beyond the misty brake And calls the drowsy morn awake. In half light rustics gather firewood. Horses snort, their steaming nostrils flare When touched by the sharpness of frosty air. White chimney smoke curls furtively skyward. Warm light from a cobbled stable glows, A strutting cock with craned neck crows, As morning’s light slowly gains. Plumes of feathered filigree, A frosty fingered artistry, Depicted on all window panes. A sibilant whisper steals over the trees, When played upon by a gentle breeze; as if they too are being roused from slumber. At sun-rise, geese in formation fly, Like some mighty arrow splitting the sky. Red sunlight spills on each of their number. A robin offers a solemn refrain, A sombre melancholy strain; Epitomising the bleak winter chill. Yet somewhere in his warbling lay The promises of warmer days, Instilled within that liquid trill. GARDENING

Blowsy Begonias By Rachel Leverton Every gardener has at least one guilty secret: mine is begonias. My mother insists they are vulgar and she wouldn’t give them house room. A gardening friend turned up her nose at my begonia baskets last year, but I won’t hear a word against them. They are the cheerful, cockney barrow boys of the plant world and I love them.

They are pretty easy to grow once you know how, and you can start them off any time now if you have a warm windowsill or a propagator. One of the reasons I find them so satisfying to grow is that they start life as a rather unprepossessing tuber, which my husband once described as looking like dried dog poo - he isn’t a gardener. The tubers should feel rock hard when you squeeze them. If they feel spongy, put them back. There is also a right way up and a wrong way up. Take your tuber and examine it. There should be a concave surface - like a little dip - and a convex surface. The dip is the upper surface from which the shoots will grow and the convex surface sprouts the roots. Fill some 12cm/5inch pots with soil-less potting compost so that the surface of the compost is 2.5cm /1 inch below the rim of the pot. This eventually

allows for watering, but at this time of year the top of the tuber should be kept dry. Push the tubers – remember concave side up - into the compost so that the top of each tuber is still visible. Do not bury them. Keep the pots at somewhere between 15-18C / 60-75F in the propagator, in a greenhouse, or on a bright windowsill, though not in direct sunlight. Water with care, and when the first flowers appear make sure they are well ventilated. High humidity and erratic watering can cause the buds to drop off. Finally, begonias have both male and female flowers. The male ones are far bigger and more showy, so pinch off the female ones, which can be spotted because they possess an embryonic seed pod behind the bud. Doing this will mean that the male flowers last much longer. You may need to stake them to support the heads. When summer arrives, you will be able to plant up pots and baskets and bask in the flamboyant blowsy beauty of the begonia: Who could resist.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Kirkbymoorside was one of the first Transition Towns in Yorkshire, possibly the very first. We don’t make much noise about it, but perhaps it’s time to remind ourselves what it means. ‘Transition’ means moving from being fossil-fuel dependent towards being more self-reliant. This can happen in many ways, not just by driving less and turning the heating down. Thanks to KMEG there are now solar panels on the pre-school Green Building in West End. Many people have been insulating their homes after a visit from our Thermal Imaging Camera team, which shows them where their heat is escaping. This cuts their fuel bills, and also cuts the release of CO2 into the atmosphere. Our Transport team have been campaigning for better bus services, and against the cancellation of the Moorsbus service. They are also slaving away to create more cycle tracks, so that our youngsters can travel safely on their bikes. One of our first projects was to produce cloth shopping bags, and this was extremely successful to start with. Fossil fuels are used in the manufacture of plastic bags, and livestock and the countryside suffer from their careless disposal. Why not make a difference and take a bag with you to carry your shopping home?

KMEG DREAMS

We would love to start a tree nursery, to increase the number of trees in the town to gobble up CO2. We would love to start a Community Garden, where people could help grow veg and fruit for themselves and their neighbours. We would love to launch a local currency, to ensure that our money circulates in the town rather than being siphoned off to banks and corporations. We have a whole list of dreams, but not quite enough people to make them all come true. Please contact us if you too are a dreamer: KMEGadmin@phonecoop.coop www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 77
