elcome to the February edition. I try not to always harp on about the weather in my editor’s letter but really this month it’s impossible! As I write, the River Derwent is as high as I’ve ever seen it, flooding the car park where we park for work but worse, causing congestion around Malton with the County Bridge and Commercial Street, Norton closed to traffic again. York is mid clear-up and our thoughts go out to the very many people who have had a miserable start to 2016 with homes and businesses to clean and rebuild after the Christmas deluge. The one positive story though was that Pickering, a notorious flood area, did not flood. How simple that by slowing water run-off within the catchment at least this local town appears

to have avoided the worst. Time will tell on this, as some say that this area was also spared the worst of the rain (as reported in The Guardian). Let’s hope for a dry sunny spring! We’re always asking our advertisers about the Handy Mag. Does it work for you? Do you get lots of calls/visitors? Do you like your advert? Where do your calls come from? But we haven’t ever asked our readers the most important question - what you think about our magazines? This month we’re giving you a chance to tell us! On page 62 you’ll find a brief questionnaire. Please fill it in and send it to us – or drop it into our office in Malton – and you might even win a prize! We’d love to make the Handy Mags as good as they can be and it’d be great to have your help! Congratulations to Mrs Scaling from Sinnington who won our December competition. Until next month…
Marianne

GREAT PRICES & EXCELLENT SERVICE ALL YEAR ROUND! with Calladene’s Home & Property Services
T
he start of another year means it’s sale time! Or is it? Kitchen and bedroom companies promote knockdown prices for their products, with pressure to buy now, to tempt customers as 2016 gets underway.
Steve and Jodie of Calladene’s Home & Property Services disagree with the need for sales. “At Calladene’s we offer honest low prices all year round so there’s just no need for huge sale discounts! Before you agree to a sale price, call Calladene’s as we believe we can offer a much more competitive price. We know from experience we are often 30-40% cheaper.” With over two decades of experience, Steve and his son Jodie have a solid reputation for excellent craftsmanship, service and pricing. Steve explained: “We guarantee to beat any like-for-like quote, so there should be need for gimmicky sales if your pricing is reasonable from the start. We look at the true cost of the project.” Calladene’s offer high quality kitchens and bedrooms at great prices all year round with no pressure and always with superb customer service. With around 300 bedroom styles to choose from and a wide range of kitchen designs, there is something to inspire all tastes and budgets. Calladene’s can take on all work
in and around the home such as kitchen and bedroom fitting including general building work, joinery, tiling, flooring, decorating and much more. Steve said: “We can work on full projects and also smaller, but no less important jobs, from gutter cleaning to power-washing a drive. “We talk to all our customers about their requirements however large or small the job. For our bedroom and kitchen fittings, we book a time to talk the the client, take measurements, show samples, go through the price list and then produce computerised images and our overall price for the project”, said Steve. “Once we’ve delivered
the images and price, there’s no pressure or obligation and it’s clear from the beginning how reasonable our prices are.” Once the ‘go ahead has been given’ all works are carried out by Steve and Jodie, without the need for subcontractors, saving on time and keeping to the timescale agreed. “The whole project, from first plans to complete installation, is given the very best, consistent attention to detail” said Steve. With their customers’ best interest at heart, Calladene’s service, pricing and reputation means you can forget the ‘silly sales season’!
Contact Steve or Jodie today on 01653 697620, 07817 993632 or 07716 204 030 or email calladenes@hotmail.co.uk 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

FOR ALL YOUR WALL AND FLOOR TILES
Personally, I love it because Christmas food is always the best! It made me wonder what festive food is enjoyed in other parts of the world. Having a dad that travels a lot, I often see streams of photos accompanied by stories of crazy cultural differences. Whilst many of us in the Western world enjoy cows, pigs or chicken, many other places enjoy the most exotic and bizarre-looking fish, assortments of insects, or plates of jellied blood! Although this may repulse many of us here in the West, to people in other cultures our food might likewise seem repulsive!

s the aura of Christmas completely wears off, I’m sure many of you may be left with one festive reminder: a life’s supply of Christmas left-overs. Maybe not the chocolates or mince pies that would be gratefully accepted, but perhaps some freezer bags of turkey and stuffing.
In our westernised society, we eat with a unified agreement, sharing and accepting our idea of mutual morals and ‘nice’ tastes. However, maybe our view is skewed. Pigs are actually one of the most intelligent creatures on the planet, smarter than cats, dogs and horses with the ability to learn new skills easily and store them in their long-term memories… So why do we find it acceptable to eat them? Recently, the Daily Mail announced that IQ tests have revealed that pigs can outsmart both dogs and chimpanzees, with their intelligence levels often matching that of three-year old children! Also they too can be family pets (provided you live on a farm), so it’s fairly baffling as to why we find it acceptable to eat them as a cultural norm whilst turning our noses up at the thought of eating these other animals. Despite this, we shouldn’t suddenly feel shamed for buying a pack of bacon from the supermarket, or immediately convert to vegetarianism at the apparent injustice, but maybe we should try to break our inherent social stigma towards other cultural foods. I’d still maybe avoid the jellied blood though!

VALENTINE’S
DAY CELEBRATIONS
A
s I’ve never really been big on romance, I am unlikely to make a grand gesture on Valentine’s Day. This year, February 14th falls on a Sunday, traditionally a day when we take it easy. With two young daughters, even this low-key ‘celebration’ is doubtful, as even Sunday seems to herald an early, energetic start! So, what other options are there? A bunch of flowers? As I’m allergic to these, the red roses can remain at the florists. What about a romantic card, with a winged cherub, bow and arrow on the front? No doubt the cards will be on the mantelpiece, yet our girls find it all perplexing and even more mysterious that their parents want to spend some quality time together ‘sans enfants’. The luxury of a meal out seems a task too far on a night when most parents will be on the hunt for a willing babysitter… and as for booking a table in advance… So how about a ‘stay at home’ evening so we can spend a couple of hours over a meal and maybe share a bottle of fizz? Assuming the kids are in bed and settled, it’s then a matter of deciding what to eat. Something other than baked beans and sausages, the Valentine’s meal is a special one so it demands a bit more sophistication… For us, we’ll either plump for a meal that’s easy to prepare or, more likely, we’ll treat ourselves to a take-away. There, problem solved. A winning solution for all! Given our ever-hectic lives, a meal for two in the comfort of your own home seems the best gesture to make on Valentine’s Day. The winged cherub can then take a rest until next year. Now where did I put that take-away menu?

just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big
investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

12 FAILURES A YEAR Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church I was shocked when a leader told me he asked his staff for twelve failures a year! As he explained, it started to make sense. According to an article in the Guardian only 10% of us will keep our New Year’s resolutions but 32% failed by the end of January. Is failure always bad? Tom didn’t have a promising future; born on 11th February 1847, he lived in the State of Ohio. Tom only spent three months in formal education; his teacher couldn’t handle his persistent questioning and hyperactivity and wrote Tom off saying he was ‘too stupid to learn anything’. Work was no better; Tom was fired from his first two jobs for not being productive enough. Tom loved reading but was easily distracted and developed an incredibly inquisitive mind. Tom soon began to experiment in the field of electricity leading to the invention of the light bulb. It took 10,000 attempts! I’ve not failed’ he said, ‘I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work’. Failure isn’t always bad, it depends on what we do next. When we give up it can lead to stagnation but when we learn it can be the catalyst to success. Tom embraced every failure, not as a defeat but as a step closer to achieving his goal. When a leader encourages his staff to fail, he gives permission to take a risk, have a go and push boundaries, thus removing the fear and stigma associated with failure releasing his team to reach their full potential.

In the past you may have failed many times, but don’t concede defeat. Get up, dust yourself down and try again. Be encouraged, find your initial resolve and persevere until you arrive at your destination. Thomas Edison, when considering his most important invention, the lightbulb, recognised something in human nature, “Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” Why not pursue 12 failures this year? It may be the quickest route to success. 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Top Tips from a dental professional
WHY HAVE PRIVATE DENTISTRY?
F
irstly it’s very important to state that dentistry by Christine Parker should be tailored to BDS (GDC 72136) your needs and provided in a safe, clean and caring environment. The Care Quality Commission (CQC) is required to visit all practices to assess this is the case. Whether private or NHS, you should expect your dentist to treat you with care and consideration and to try to ensure that treatment is pain-free as much as possible. There might be the odd occasion where this is not possible but it should be the exception rather than the rule. At Howardian Dental we take time to get to know our patients, using high quality materials and products. Laboratory work, such as dentures and crowns can be available in a large range of shades and shapes. As a rule, these tend to look more natural and to last longer. Why would I want to spend more time in the dentist’s chair, you may ask? Well, it is actually much more relaxing to be seen on time, and to have the opportunity to discuss and diagnose your treatment needs without feeling rushed.
Mary Wragg MSc, MCSP, MMACP, HCP Chartered Physiotherapist
Your dentist can also show you exactly how to look after your mouth and offer personalised information on how to address your dental problems. So, to summarise, would you like treatment in a caring and unrushed environment with excellent quality materials? If so, consider changing to private dentistry and contact Jan at Howardian Dental Practice.

Weddings Weddings take lots of organisation and effort to ensure you have a perfect day. With the help of local businesses your planning can be ‘plain sailing’! Here’s a handy checklist to help you …
AS SOON AS POSSIBLE:
Announce your engagement. Decide the wedding date, type of venue and ceremony. Religious or civil ceremony? Country house? Hotel? A church? These tend to book up rapidly, so this should be your first consideration.
Agree a budget - and stick to it! You can be creative with the financial side of it. Call in some favours from friends, as many will be willing to help out with the ‘big day’. Have you checked the legal requirements for your ceremony? Come up with the guest list – stick to loved ones who can genuinely share the joy of your special day.

Three basic steps to achieve fabulous skin! by Sarah Greenhough, No1 Health & Beauty
It is important we look after our skin – it’s the only one we’ve got! I frequently hear ladies say they find it difficult to spend any amount of time on their skin, but in reality, five minutes in the morning and five minutes in the evening are enough to make a difference as to how your skin looks and feels. For most of us, our day begins with a flurry of activity and it’s so easy to do nothing more with our skin other than use soap and water. Yet beautiful skin can be achieved in just a few minutes if you follow three simple steps using three key products:
Step 1 Firstly, a cleanser is a must to use both morning and evening. Cleansers come in various forms either a cream cleanser or a cleansing wash. The benefit of using a cleanser is that it removes cosmetics, bacteria, oil and pollution which are on our skin every day. Cleansers are much gentler to the skin than soap. While soap cleans your skin, it may also remove your skin’s natural oils that help keep your skin hydrated.
Step 2 The next step is to use a toner, which refreshes and rejuvenates the skin, helps shrink the pores and also helps your skin to maintain its correct PH balance, keeping your skin healthy.
Step 3
IN CONCERT
A moisturiser keeps your skin hydrated which is so important in keeping your skin looking healthy. Facial moisturisers enhance the functioning of the Stratum Corneum, which the uppermost layer of the skin. The Stratum Corneum consists of fat, oil and skin cells which help keep moisture in your skin. By using moisturiser, it increases the moisture level which helps prevent dehydration. If you can buy a moisturiser which includes SPF too, even better as it will help protect against any sun damage. At Number One Health & Beauty, we offer free skincare consultations, and we happy to help with any skincare problems that you may have, using British skincare brand Elemis. 1 Market Street, Malton YO17 7LY

Best Foot Forward with Reflexology
M
any of us will have heard of reflexology – but what does this therapy involve?
Reflexology uses skilful, gentle manipulation of the foot, which is a perfect mini-map of the human body, with organs, glands and body parts positioned proportionally on your foot. Starting with the toes representing the head region, the ball of the foot represents the chest, the inset the abdomen, the inside curve of the foot the spine and heel the pelvic area. At Gaia Holistix, Vivien McGlashan is keen to promote this natural healing practice. By using her experience and training, Vivien can rebalance
and heal parts of the body, as well as inducing a deep sense of relaxation.
Vivien explained: “The relaxation and rebalancing can promote natural healing on all levels and is suitable for all ages. “So whether you just want some quality ‘time out’ or assistance with your general health, reflexology can help.” Vivien received her first reflexology session 25 years ago and was so impressed she became a trained practitioner in the therapy! She still enjoys both giving and receiving reflexology and is amazed at the extraordinary way it can make people feel. Vivien explains: “A reflexology
session begins with a full consultation. Shoes and socks are removed and feet are refreshed in a foot spa containing tea tree and lavender oils. The person receiving the treatment then lies on the treatment couch, covered with a blanket and there’s soothing music playing. “I then apply the reflexology in a variety of different techniques stimulating the body’s reflexes. “Following the treatment, the participant feels refreshed, invigorated and energised.” Benefits include stimulation of nerve function, increased energy, boosted circulation, relief of sleep disorders, reduction in depression and pain relief. HELP YOUR CHILDREN STAY SAFE ONLINE
D
id your children receive expensive Christmas gifts such as ipads, tablets and other devices? Are we all switched on parents or grandparents? How can you help your children stay safe online? Whilst the internet’s a fantastic resource for learning, communicating and entertainment, it is also largely unregulated and, unfortunately, the channel of choice for many people who have bad intentions. Children are more innocent and usually more trusting than we are, and certainly less prepared to handle the negative situations they may come across on the internet. They are also full of natural curiosity which is a great thing but that’s why today, we need to be switched on to how to protect children online, not just with parental controls and specialist software that we may already be using, but by engaging with our children from an early age, and keeping engaged with them as they grow up in their digital world. What are the risks you might ask? • Inappropriate contact from people who may wish to abuse, exploit or bully them • Inappropriate conduct – their own and others’ online behaviour, such as the personal information they make public. Unfortunately, children can become cyberbullies • Inappropriate content – being able to access or being sexually explicit, racist, violent, extremist or other harmful material, either through choice or in error • Commercialism – being the targets of aggressive advertising and marketing messages • Gaining access to YOUR personal information stored on your computer and passing it on to others. Get Safe Online, the UK Government’s preferred source of online safety advice, has put together a guide for parents. The advice is written by experts, easy to follow and implement, and better still completely free ! So why not start today by visiting www. getsafeonline.org and clicking on the “Safeguarding Children” button on the home page. TOUR DE YORKSHIRE
February Walk By The Pastoral Poet I leave the beaten iron-stone, For where I know I’ll be alone. But for the moment time is free And toil is alien to me. The buzz of traffic, on the wane As I head for St Andrew’s Lane, Where catkins tremble in the breeze And lichens scar the aged trees. The melting snow has taken fright, Where snowdrops boast a purer white And distant hills a hazy blue, Seem nearer as they sometimes do. Where pan-tiled hamlets reassure, Unceasing is their quaint allure, And Wood House further to my right Looks haunting in the dappled light. Through kissing gates and over stiles, I move with stealth through wooded aisles. Where jays and magpies voice dissent, Their every epithet is meant. And further still the Derwent glides Serenely on to distant tides. A wispy mist defines its trail, Meandering through Crambeck vale. The pigeons claim the evergreens, Where each one settles down and preens, The coo communal evensong, The twilight hour will not be long. The falling sun’s last fading ray, Will signal closure to the day. And those to whom the world is free, This day of days was here for me. Clive Milson
Future Kirkbymoorside cycle/footpath; funds for signs needed
T
op ranking cyclists will be whizzing through Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Hutton-le-Hole on Sunday 1st May. They then head over the Moors to Whitby, and finish up in Scarborough. You can find further details from the Tour de Yorkshire website. Pubs, shops, cafes and accommodation providers along the route will be getting into gear and those who want to attract cyclists can register with the Cycle Touring Club UK “cyclists welcome” scheme at www.ctc.org.uk. How can we use the TV coverage and the many visiting cycling enthusiasts to give some lasting benefit to our area? Wouldn’t it be great if we could capture some funds on the day to invest in local cycle routes safe enough for children and nervous adults? Of course the cyclists must slow down and give way to pedestrians and to horse riders on shared use paths, and some of the funds would be needed for clear signs to get this message of consideration across. Kirkbymoorside Environment Group will be discussing eye-catching fundraising ideas for 1st May at our meeting on 28th February, 7.30 at The Kings Head Hotel. All welcome, or you can contact us on 01751 432447 if you have ideas but can’t make it that evening.

A local charity is calling on people in Ryedale to wear something red and raise awareness about a life-threatening brain condition later this month. “Encephalitis is a global issue and every little bit of awareness helps to make people aware that it can affect anyone.” As part of the third annual World Encephalitis Day, The Encephalitis Society has also organised a Short Film, Photography and Digital Art competition with entries coming from across the globe “We have been asking survivors, their families and the wider public to ‘tell us what the world should know about encephalitis,’” said Dr Easton.
T
he Encephalitis Society, which is based on Castlegate, Malton, is hoping to recruit support for its “#Red4WED” campaign for World Encephalitis Day (WED) on February 22. The hope is that by wearing red clothing, the public will help spread the word about the condition, an inflammation of the brain, which affects around 500,000 people across the globe each year.
“We wanted them to use art to express what encephalitis means to people across the globe.” “There is a lot of excitement surrounding this competition and World Encephalitis Day itself which seems to get bigger and bigger each year. “We are delighted that we have had so many entries – not just from the UK but from further afield as well. Although the closing date for entries has now passed, members of the public can still have their say on who the winners should be when a shortlist of finalists is revealed on The Encephalitis Society’s website on Sunday, February 7.
“Any support people in Ryedale could give us for World Encephalitis Day and our #Red4WED campaign would be fantastic,” said Dr Ava Easton, Chief Executive of The Encephalitis Society.
The winners will then be crowned on February 22 – World Encephalitis Day.
“You could wear one of our specially-made t-shirts, perhaps? Or even a red beret, a pair of red socks or even some red shoes. “Why not hold a sponsored #Red4WED party where everyone has to wear the colour red?”
For more information about #Red4WED visit www.encephalitis.info/red4wed and World Encephalitis Day, visit www.worldencephalitisday.org

The vet will usually carry out a physical examination and take a blood sample to guide treatment and identify underlying cause/s. Chronic cases may also require a urine sample and muscle biopsy. Most horses suffering from Monday Morning Disease can be managed by dietary changes and a gradual increase in exercise. After resting or exercising less over winter it is important to not suddenly over-work your horse. Start out with light exercise and gradually increase training as your horse gets back in to fitness.
MONDAY MORNING DISEASE ‘Monday Morning Disease’ is so called because it typically occurred in working horses when they had enjoyed time off at the weekend. Set-fast or ‘tying-up’ are some of many names used to describe what is known as Exertional Rhabdomyolysis in the veterinary world. It is a common exercise-associated muscle disease seen in horses with some horses suffer from re-occurring episodes and some horses only having one or two episode during their entire life time. There are many different causes for the disease such as sudden increase in workload, poor fitness, over feeding high carbohydrate diets, general illness, electrolyte imbalance and heritable disorders. Identification of the underlying cause will help managing and preventing future attacks. Most suffering horses are seen sweating with a stiff gait and muscle trembles after exercising. Other signs may be reluctance to walk, stretching out, rapid breathing and painful tense hind quarters. If you notice any of these signs stop working your horse and call your vet. Forcing a horse to work through an episode may cause further damage.
Horses fed on a high grain diet are more likely to suffer than those fed on a low-grain and highfat diet. If your horse is prone to developing Monday Morning Disease he should be kept on hay or grass, with minimal grain or sweet feed supplements. Vitamins and mineral supplements may be added as needed to make up a complete and balanced diet. To meet energy requirements a fat source can be included in the diet, such as vegetable oil. W
ith a passion for his craft, Michael Rowland at MCR Joinery can help your dreams come true for a superbly designed kitchen in 2016! Michael has always had a passion for his craft, achieving a Distinction in his City & Guilds qualification. After gaining wider experience in the building industry, Michael was inspired to start his own joinery business in February 2008 and specialises in kitchens, along with joinery work in other rooms. Michael said: “I like to start with an idea as a blank canvas and create something I’m very proud of. I am a perfectionist so if a job takes a little bit longer to complete, I will do so at my own expense. The end result is the most important thing.” Michael’s interest in woodwork was inspired by his father, who was a cabinet maker. His passion for his craft is clearly seen by his customers, and Michael enjoys the look on client’s faces when they see the finished project. Michael said: “The job can be quite physically demanding, and as I am developing a name for myself, in the future I would like to employ craftsmen with a similar skill set to help the business grow. “As getting the perfect kitchen takes time, it’s best for potential customers to get in touch in advice so I can schedule in their work.” Every day is different depending on the project, and Michael also carefully prepares quotes for existing and future customers. “I quote the best price I can,” said Michael. “My prices are competitive and I am not registered for VAT.” Contact MCR Joinery for craftsmanship that will exceed expectation.

MICROCHIPPING
From 6th April 2016 Microchipping of all dogs over 8 weeks of age will be the law!!! Those found without a microchip will have the benefits explained to them and be given a short period to comply. If they fail to chip their dog, owners will face a fine of up to £500. Having your dog microchipped is one of the best ways to increase your pet’s chances of getting home. Unlike dog tags and collars, which can fall off or be removed, microchipping is a permanent form of identifying your dog. But don’t forget the law says all dogs must wear a collar and tag, with their owner’s name, address and telephone number on it. A microchip is a small electronic device, the size of a grain of rice, which is implanted under the dog’s skin (this procedure should cause no more discomfort than a standard vaccination). The chip contains a unique number that can be read by a scanner. The dog owner’s contact details relating to this unique number are logged on a central database, so should the dog ever go missing or be stolen it can be scanned by local authorities and vets. Sadly owners forget to notify their microchip database of their new contact details if they move address or change telephone numbers. Please remember that from April 2016 it will be a requirement under the law that you must keep your dog’s microchip information up-to-date; if you do not, then the microchip is useless. It’s really quite simple to update the details for your dog’s microchip. You can do it online, by telephone or by post, depending on which database your chip is registered to. Charges for updating your chip details also vary across the microchip databases. If you don’t have the chip number, ask your vet to scan your dog’s microchip

COULD YOU SPARE SOME LOVE FOR ONE OF OUR RESCUE DOGS THIS VALENTINE’S DAY? The first few months of the year are always busy for the rescue as we deal with the large numbers of abandoned and unwanted dogs that come into our care. Many will have been unwanted Christmas presents. If you are looking for a new furry addition to your family please consider a rescue dog. We get to know all of our dogs and run a thorough re-homing process so that we are able to match you with the right dog. All of our dogs are micro-chipped, neutered and vaccinated before re-homing and we support all our adopters through the adoption process. So why not give your heart to a rescue dog this February?

GARDEN VIEW
What to get gardener in your By Rachael Leverton life this Valentine’s Day?
W
ant a romantic gift for your gardening Valentine? Forget the drooping daffs and jet-lagged lilies, flown halfway round the world. For a gardener a real romantic gesture is one that will last longer than a few days. Some gardeners actually dislike cut flowers, and most gardeners are eco-friendly, so when you think of all yards of cellophane and air-miles clocked up by exotic blooms, a living plant suddenly seems like a better option. Jasmine, Stephanotis and Gardenias are fragrant and glamorous, or try a passionflower vine, wound round a heart-
shaped support. What could be more romantic than that? We think of red roses as being the bloom of romance so what better than an entire bush of them that promises years of pleasure ahead. One problem is that they are not at their best in February, and will most likely resemble a bunch of thorny twigs in a pot! But if your Valentine is a keen gardener they will enjoy the anticipation of the future blooms. Myrtle has been associated with love since Roman times and is still used in wedding bouquets. With its neat glossy evergreen leaves and clusters of fragrant, fluffy white flowers followed by purple berries, Myrtis communis
is a plant of quiet good taste. If planted in a sheltered spot it can eventually grow into a tree up to 5m tall. If you want to give a flower in bloom try a potted camellia, winter honeysuckle, violas, or an orchid. These plants are all associated with love and longing. If you simply must hand over a bunch of cut flowers, try to choose blooms grown in the mild climate of the Scilly Isles as environmentally-friendly alternatives to exotic species flown in from the other side of the globe. ‘Paperwhite’ narcissi are beautifully scented and available now.
