elcome to our February edition. As I’m writing (at the beginning of January) we’re embarking on a new household diet. It all started in between Christmas and New Year, when, feeling stuffed with meat and yummy Christmas chocolates, we all felt that a change was going to be necessary. Like many people this year, my daughter was all in favour of going the whole hog (!) and doing ‘veganuary’. I’ve never really been tempted by going vegan. I understand that it is probably healthier and more sustainable to the planet but I just find it hard to believe we can survive on a diet of simply plants. After the look of horror on my other half ’s face (especially after he realised that cheese was off the menu) we decided that dairy-free pescatarian was an easier diet to keep to. Apparently this is eating occasional fish and eggs but no dairy or meat. So, we’re currently on day 6 and how’s it going? I trying, I really am, but there’s just still too much left over Christmas food to make a real go of it. We’ve managed vegan lunches this week – well, most of the week. I even baked some banana, apple and nut flapjack bites to keep me going (desperation!). My daughter has cooked a couple of tasty meals for us without meat or dairy and I now have a variety of lentils, chick peas and beans in the cupboard ready for all of those vegan recipes. Perhaps it will get easier? And I know we will feel the benefits…soon. February is usually a quiet month for events but there seems to be more going on than usual at this time of year. York Literature Festival has a full range of events to appeal to everyone and we have the full listings in our centre pages this month.

2019 is a Year of the Pig according to the Chinese zodiac, and it starts on 5th February. The pig represents wealth, generosity and diligence. Great traits to have at the beginning of a year! Well done to Miss Kilvington of West Lutton for winning our December competition. Until next month…

Astrophysicist Tim O’Brien at North York Moors Dark Skies Festival
well-known astrophysicist and popular media commentator on space matters will raise the curtain on the North York Moors Dark Skies Festival this February. Tim O’Brien, who is professor of astrophysics at the University of Manchester and associate director of the Jodrell Bank Centre for Astrophysics, will shed light on some of the greatest cosmic curiosities at the opening event of the fourth annual Dark Skies Festival (15 February – 3 March 2019). Speaking in the atmospheric surroundings of Castle Howard, Prof O’Brien, who makes regular appearances on BBC Radio Five Live and Breakfast TV, as well as having featured on Stargazing Live and Radio 4’s Life Scientific, will captivate an audience with his ‘Our Place in the Universe’ talk. The Festival’s packed programme of events will then roll out over the fortnight with more than 100 events across the National Park and the Howardian

Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Some of the events will be themed around the moon to celebrate the 50th anniversary year of the first moon landing by astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin, and because the first week of the Festival will coincide with a Full Moon phase. Visitors can expect moon and stargazing sessions, together with cycling, running and walking events in woodland, across the moors and in coastal villages under starry skies as well as family crafting activities such as rocket-making. The National Park has three Dark Sky Discovery sites where skies are sufficiently dark to potentially view the Milky Way with the naked eye. The sites are located at The Moors National Park Centre at Danby, Sutton Bank and Dalby Forest. Further programme information and booking details are available at www.darkskiesnationalparks. org.uk. A number of events will be free while others will have a small charge attached.

Every daffodil counts – we need you!
I
t’s that time again, where the days get a little longer, spring feels a little closer and daffodils start to bloom. It can only mean one thing…The Great Daffodil Appeal is here! Marie Curie’s biggest annual fundraising campaign is once again kicking off this February where we’ll be raising as much money and awareness as possible for our local services right through to April. Behind every daffodil there is a story and each and every donation for a daffodil keeps the Marie Curie nursing services in your area going. Every one of us in the UK will be affected at some point by a terminal illness, and we need more support than ever so that we can provide the care everyone deserves at the end of their life. And it’s so easy to help. We need as many collectors as possible to help for a couple of hours throughout our Morrisons weekend collections… Malton Morrisons: Thurs 28th February, Fri 1st & Sat 2nd March If you would like to sign up to any of these collections, just visit www.mariecurie.org.uk/collect or contact Emma on 01904 755260 or 07547 978969 or email emma.williams@mariecurie.org.uk for more information or to sign up.

Wagner
Parsifal
WEDNESDAY 17TH APRIL 2019 7.30pm / York Minster
SIR MARK ELDER (CONDUCTOR) HALLÉ ORCHESTRA AND CHOIR NICKY SPENCE (PARSIFAL) IAIN PATERSON (AMFORTAS) GABOR BRETZ (GURNEMANZ)
Wagner – Prelude to Act 1 and Act 3 of Parsifal For his final masterpiece, Wagner turned towards the sacred realm, aiming to compose a work in which ‘the most sublime mysteries of the Christian faith are openly presented on stage’. It re-tells the ancient story of Parsifal, a ‘holy fool’ made wise through pity and redeemed by a simple act of compassion. Act III is the spiritual heart and emotional climax of the work, as Parsifal fulfils his journey towards understanding. It includes the magnificent Good Friday Music which celebrates the day on which the world is renewed – a moving paean to the beauty of nature and the eternal renewal of springtime. ‘The hero’s path to compassion and understanding can be a metaphor’ says Pope Francis, ‘to better understand how human beings understand themselves today.’
Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé are renowned for their performances of this work. Their 2013 Proms performance was described by The Guardian as ‘a constant wonder’ and by The Spectator as ‘miraculous’, while for The Daily Telegraph he and the orchestra found the ‘spiritual halo’ and ‘all the essential pain and anguish’ of the work. Heard in York Minster during Holy Week, with singers from York University augmenting the Hallé forces, this will surely be an unforgettable performance. ‘Elder’s single-minded patience creates a powerful and quietly hypnotic sense of weary sadness…controlling everything with the surest of touches right up until a deeply moving account of the final bars’ – Gramophone
Tickets from £20 to £50 – please call the Box Office for details

Hopefully for many, if not all people, 2018 brought some good moments, perhaps success, happy times and pleasant memories: it may also have provided disappointments, sadness, loss of friends or family, thoughts of which naturally remain, and are painful. However the future lies ahead and I am personally trying to be positive about whatever is in store for us, both as individuals and as a nation. I believe that this year is full of possibilities and opportunities. Among all the centenaries which 2018 celebrated e.g. the Royal Air Force and the Armistice of 1918, there was the 100th Anniversary of the success of the Suffragettes - those courageous and determined women who finally broke into the male preserve by gaining a vote in public elections.. Of course, in 1918, it wasn’t for every woman: you had to be thirty years old (because your female brain was only supposed to reach its maturity at that age!) and you also had to own property. It took another ten years before all women, and even some men, had the right to vote. Today, there are still anomalies: equal pay for equal work is not found in all jobs, trades or professions : from the BBC downwards, the hope and the fight go on. But I have hope, too, for our country as a whole. Whatever the final outcome of the Brexit question, I am quite sure that ultimately the UK will ‘pick itself up, shake itself off ’, and address the future positively. Remember- ‘Hope springs eternal’! So a Happy and Hopeful New Year to everyone, everywhere! 26 | Handy Mag | February 2019

But firstly I would like to say a big thank you to the businesses and organisations that supported our Ryedale Hamper initiative helping us to raise vital funds – Reeds Newsagents Pickering, Pickering Library, Redmayne Lodge Strensall and Brooks Newsagents Helmsley. Our fundraising calendar is jam packed with activities this year, including the Spring Luncheon in May with bestselling Yorkshire author Milly Johnson. Enjoy a welcome glass of wine and a delicious two course lunch, followed by coffee in the beautiful surroundings of the Principal York Hotel, then sit back and be entertained by the tales of our speaker. Tickets are £30 each and include your welcome drink, two course lunch and coffee. Throughout September we will once again be holding our Sunflower Arts Festival. This year, instead of having a main central exhibition hub, we would like to feature more community-based arts exhibitions and activities. These events can be any form of art such as photography, ceramics, needlecraft and so on. I know from my experience that there are many fantastic artists in the area; it would be great to showcase people’s talents as part of the art festival! DB OR NOT DB? THAT IS THE QUESTION By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at Pen Life Associates There’s a lot of nonsense being bandied around on pension transfers. Tens of thousands of British Steel workers were forced to make quick decisions about very complex pension matters. Which could affect them and their families for the rest of their lives. And even beyond. Most find these options completely overwhelming. And legally, you can’t transfer this type of pension without taking professional advice. But there are some unscrupulous ‘advisers’ who might take advantage of that fact for their own gain. And - to make matters worse - there are some well-meaning but clueless bystanders. (Did you see I stopped myself short of saying media monkeys.) They’re also wading into the arena with their generic, so-called‘advice’. The fact is, every single individual will have completely different circumstances and objectives. There simply isn’t a one size fits all solution. And this dilemma isn’t exclusively affecting British Steel workers. Hundreds of thousands of people have ‘final salary’ (otherwise known as ‘defined benefit’ or ‘occupational pension benefits’) schemes. And they all face the same decision. This affects ex-employees of companies like National Grid, Arcadia, most of the UK banks, and closer to home, Rowntree/Nestle and Aviva. The standard advice was always to leave these schemes well alone. But then George Osbourne introduced pension freedom rules in 2015, which allow unrestricted access to personal pension funds… This, and the eye-wateringly high transfer values currently being offered by these schemes, has changed everything. Whether you ‘stick or twist’ now depends on a whole heap of factors. And these factors are completely different for everyone. We have advised hundreds of clients on these types of pensions and we’ve never seen two cases that were the same. The decisions you make around these pensions will affect you and your family for the rest of your lives – and potentially into future generations. Which is why you have to be certain you understand your choices. This is why we host our free seminars – to help people fully understand the decision they have to make. At our next seminar we will explain the differences between defined benefit and defined contribution pensions. And all the things you’ll need to think very carefully about before making any decisions – things you may have never even heard of. Read on to find out how you can sign up to attend our straight-talking, informative presentation. If you would like to bring a friend or colleague with you who you believe would also be interested, please confirm their full name as well as your own when you get in touch.

o you enjoy singing? Would you like to join a choir? Ryedale Voices is a new mixed voice choir based in Norton and welcomes new members from all over Ryedale. Started by Alison Davis, the new choir will sing a variety of styles from gospel to folk and musicals to world music. Alison, who lives in Rillington and is an experienced singing teacher and vocal coach, is currently choir director for Harmonia Ladies Choir which she started over 10 years ago. This successful local choir has gone from strength to strength performing all over Ryedale, York and North Yorkshire and has won awards at festivals over the last 3 years. Alison says, “After running Harmonia for many years, I felt that there was a need for another mixed voice choir in the area. There won’t be any auditions for the choir as it is a community choir at its core and anyone can join - even if they have no prior experience or ability to read music!” Singing in a choir has been scientifically proven to be good for your health, boosts self esteem and gives you confidence! Why not take this opportunity to get involved? Rehearsals will be held at Norton College from 7:30 to 9:00pm and start on Tuesday 5th February. A termly fee will apply. The accompanist will be James Poole. For more information about joining please contact Alison on alisondavis1@hotmail.co.uk or 07789 695165.

DESTIGMATISING MENTAL HEALTH
A
The importance of Mental Health First Aid
s a therapist, I work with a large number of clients who are experiencing mental distress or are in a period of mental poor health. It’s important to remember that our mental health isn’t fixed; it can be viewed on a continuum, ebbing and flowing throughout our lifetime. A particular challenge with mental poor health is the stigma that is so often associated with it. This means that people experiencing a decline in their mental wellbeing can be seen as weak. In turn, this means that many people then fail to come forward to seek help until their condition has reached a point where they are taking time off work, their relationships are suffering and their ability to cope with every-day situations is severely impaired. But stigma can be broken and we can help people come forward earlier. Stress, depression, anxiety, eating disorders, psychosis, self-harm, and suicide are issues that we should all be aware of and able to talk about openly. And there are simple tools we can all use to make sure we can. In addition to being a therapist, I am also a Mental Health First Aid Instructor with Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) England – www. mhfaengland.org. MHFA can be thought of in the same way as physical first aid. It doesn’t teach you to be a therapist or a counsellor, in the same way that physical first aid doesn’t teach you how to be doctor or a nurse. Rather, it gives you the knowledge, skills and confidence to recognise the signs and symptoms of common mental health issues and effectively guide a person towards the right support, be that self-help information, an employee assistance programme, or NHS services. Mental ill health is very common. One in four people in the UK will experience at least one diagnosable mental health issue in any one year, with suicide being the biggest killer of men aged 20 to 49. Poor mental health can have a significant impact in the workplace too. At any one time, one worker in
every six will be experiencing depression, anxiety or issues relating to stress. This costs the UK economy up to £99 billion according to a recent government review, with a total cost to employers of around £42 billion each year - that’s equivalent to £1,300 for every employee in the UK workforce! It’s no surprise then that, as a business, investing in the mental health of your employees can have a significant impact on your bottom line. Thousands of organisations already use MHFAiders as one part of a wider approach to better support their employees, and are seeing a real impact. With so many employers training staff in MHFA, in November the Health and Safety Executive released new guidance for workplaces including mental health as part of their first aid needs assessment. It now officially recommends appointing ‘mental health trained first aiders’ alongside other supports. This is a really positive move in the push to destigmatise mental ill health, steering us all to move towards mentally healthier workplaces and communities where people feel able to come forward to seek support. So what’s the next step? Well, to be a Mental Health First Aider, you need to have completed the internationally recognised Adult MHFA Two Day course. MHFA England also offers specific courses for the Armed Forces, for those working with young people, and for staff and students in Higher Education. The next available Adult MHFA Two Day course (open to the public) is 28th February and 1st March 2019 in Pickering. Numbers are strictly limited to ensure that the course is delivered safely, as we discuss some emotive issues such as suicide and self-harm. All delegates are fully supported by their instructor throughout the course, and will come away from the training feeling empowered by their learning. If you would like more information or to book a place, please get in touch. If you would prefer a course delivered in-house within your business or community group, please get in touch and I will be happy to help. Best wishes for a mentally healthy 2019, Karen Hayward

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL
ARE YOU VALENTINE’S DAY READY?
A
re you confident about your smile and the freshness of your breath? Does the thought of getting up close and personal concern you? by Christine Parker
Here at Howardian Dental Practice BDS (GDC 72136) we understand that these worries can have a significant impact on your self esteem. We can treat any gum disease which might be affecting your breath and demonstrate the best methods for you to prevent its return. Not only is fresh breath a confidence booster, by removing the underlying gum disease it can also reduce your risk of more significant health problems including heart disease, diabetes and dementia. A bit of ‘morning breath’ is one thing but poor general health is a much bigger concern So if you want to actually learn how to look after your mouth properly, and in most cases its not difficult, then call us and we’ll help you gain the skills and gain more confidence. A significant number of our patients regularly state that their mouths have never felt or looked so good. So don’t delay and call our friendly team on your first step to fresh breath confidence.

CHARLIE’S COLUMN The Value of The Volunteer
O
ne of the most valuable things in my world is the priceless work of a (Ryedale Special Families) volunteer called Graham. I have known him a long time (too long in some people’s joking eyes!) and he has seen both sides of my life. People like Graham provide incredible work, work that I feel needs to be recognised and celebrated. Graham does a lot for me every month.Whether it’s a night in with a takeaway, a cinema trip, or a couple of games of pool in Malton, those sessions help me have fun away from the parents. It’s always a good laugh and can especially help if I’m in feeling down or frustrated with my illnesses. Graham is not the only person giving up their own time to help others. It was reported back in 2016 that an estimated 14.2 Million people also gave up their spare time once a month to formally volunteer across the UK. That is a massive amount. And so many lives like mine do and will continue to benefit from these wonderful, selfless people. Some of the biggest charities have a great number of volunteers. According to 2017 statistics, The Royal British Legion has 119,000, Age UK has 41,000 and Cancer Research UK is at 40,000. It’s not just charities that rely on volunteers. There are schools, parks, events, hospitals etc that wouldn’t be able to function without volunteers. In North Yorkshire, there are 5,000 volunteer organisations that benefit the county. Volunteering is an often forgotten part of society: you rarely see it on the news. And when It has been so important to me and millions of others, it’s a shame it isn’t widely reported anywhere, it’s hidden away and never really considered. If I want you to take one thing from this, my latest article, the next time your out and about, in a shop, a cafe or just walking through town, stop and look around at everyone around you: anyone could be a person doing amazing things. Anyone could be a volunteer. by Charlie Ridgewell

KITCHENS & BEDROOMS Local service, choice & value
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. Instyle’s directors Gary and Paul say that more than 80 per cent of customers come through referrals from their customers’ family, friends and neighbours. James and Heather, from Wiggington, wrote: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 28 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one

kitchen a month, to a close-knit team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in the area. The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from a new creative design to the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently
beats its competitors on price. And if money is tight, an Instyle kitchen or bedroom facelift can freshen up a tired looking room for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen often for half the price of new. “We don’t use any pressure sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

WORLD ENCEPHALITIS DAY
“Low Blind Price” Kevin Hollinrake, MP for Thirsk and Malton, Dr Ava Easton, Chief Executive of the Encephalitis Society, and Baroness McIntosh of Pickering, a vice president of the society, at last year’s World Encephalitis Day campaign launch
T
he House of Lords was the historic setting for the launch of a Malton charity’s global awareness campaign on January 15. The Encephalitis Society travelled to London to start the countdown to the sixth annual World Encephalitis Day on February 22. Staff and supporters were hosted by Baroness McIntosh of Pickering in her role as vice president of the charity which helps people affected by the condition, an inflammation of the brain. Dr Ava Easton, Chief Executive of the Encephalitis Society, said: “We are grateful to Baroness McIntosh for arranging our visit to the House of Lords and what we hope will be the start of another successful World Encephalitis Day campaign. “Statistics reveal that 78 per cent of people do not know what encephalitis is – this is despite the condition affecting 500,000 people each year, irrespective of their age, gender or country. This is why we put so much effort into campaigns such as World Encephalitis Day which hold the key to our long-term ambitions of making the general public aware of a condition which affects more people than bacterial meningitis and Motor Neurone Disease.” This year’s campaign will see the charity, which is based on Castlegate, Malton, invite people to download its award-winning smartphone App and take part in a virtual journey to key locations relevant to the condition. Supporters are also being encouraged to wear something red on World Encephalitis Day and share their photos on social media, telling their friends and followers about the condition and why it is important to them. Dr Easton added: “We are very proud of what we have achieved with World Encephalitis Day over the past several years. The Encephalitis Society reaches tens of millions of people through our campaign each year and, slowly but surely, we are confident we will live in a world where the vast majority of the public are aware of encephalitis.” For more information, visit www.worldencephalitisday.org

Malton and Norton Tidy Group Ten Years on
alton and Norton Tidy Group collected an impressive 509 bags of litter, plus debris, in 2018 - the largest year’s haul, by some way, since the Tidy Group formed in 2009. Since its formation, the Tidy Group has collected over 2,000 bags of litter and been fully supported by Streetscene (Ryedale District Council) - who have supplied pickers, hi-vis vests and bags, and pick up the collections. Monthly litter picks are largely carried out along the main roads of Malton and Norton but there is hardly a street or public open space that has not been tackled over the years. This work has made a
real difference to making the towns look cared for but litter is an issue that does not appear to be going away, as demonstrated by the 2018 total. However, the increase in collections is largely due the number of volunteers attending the Tidy Group’s monthly meets rising - 32 people were in attendance for the litter pick in December. Also, volunteers continue to carry out additional litter picks on areas that they like to look after, including Scarborough Road, Castle Howard Road, and the riverside picnic area. This litter picking supports the work of Malton In Bloom and the horticultural work of the town councils. For 2019, Malton In Bloom will consolidate the success of 2018 when it was awarded Gold by Yorkshire In Bloom. Malton Market Place and prominent sites across the community will be festooned with colourful planters and hanging baskets, and community groups will continue to look after the town entrance signs, and various public open spaces, including St Leonard’s Garden, Water Lane car park, the bus station and the railway station. In addition, guerrilla gardeners have planted a number of prominent sites.

SHOULD I NEUTER MY DOG OR CAT? Andy Yale BVMedSci (Hons) BVM BVS (Hons) MRCVS
N
eutering male dogs will reduce their straying response to bitches in season. In terms of health, neutering will eliminate risk of testicular cancer, and dramatically reduce the risk of prostatic disease later in life. With female dogs similar benefits apply. Neutering prevents problems associated with oestrus (season or ‘heat’) which usually occurs every 6 months, where during this time bitches must be kept away from entire dogs and supervised closely. It also prevents the risk of false pregnancy which can occur after a season and may be harmful - it can be distressing for both dog and owner. Neutering eliminates the risk of pyometra, a lifethreatening womb infection that can develop later in life. It also reduces the chance of developing mammary cancer, especially if neutered before the first season. There are some arguments against routine neutering but most are not justified when explored more closely, and certainly the benefits outweigh potential risks. Neutering can predispose to weight gain, but as long as diet is appropriately managed this is rarely a problem. In bitches, urinary incontinence later in life can occasionally be associated with neutering but this is a condition that is easily treated in most cases. Neutering is often recommended between 4-6 months of age for cats, and from 6 months for dogs, although this is decided on an individual and breed basis after discussion with your vet; advice should always be sought regarding the risks and benefits in individual cases. The procedure is usually performed as a day-case and patients often make a comfortable and quick recovery. Contact your vet today to discuss the decision of neutering your pet. We are now offering laparoscopic ‘key hole’ bitch speys at our Stamford Bridge Surgery. Clients know that keyhole surgery is very common in human procedures and now this expertise has been passed onto the veterinary profession we feel that
74 | Handy Mag | February 2019
this is the way forward with regards to treating our clients’ pets. The procedure is an ovariectomy (removing just the ovaries) rather than a full ovariohysterectomy (uterus as well). This has been proven to be all that is needed and there is no increased risk of pyometra or other complications as a result of not taking out the uterus. This is historically just a tradition in the UK, but means more tissue is removed for no real reason. Key hole spey in bitches has been proven to cause a lot less post operative pain and significantly less morbidity that a traditional spey. There is a much shorter recovery time, patients are happier to move around sooner and need less pain relief post-operatively as well as the wounds are smaller - just 2 x 1cm. Recovery is quicker and patients are less likely to traumatise or lick wounds. We at Battle Flatts feel that this is a much better way of neutering your dog and will hope to provide this service at all of our clinics in the future. If you have any questions or queries about this procedure then please feel free to give one of our surgeries a ring and ask to speak to either a vet or a nurse.
