A belated Happy New Year and best wishes for 2013 to all of our readers and advertisers. My positive thoughts and warm fuzzy feelings for 2013 came to an end on the evening on 1st January with the discovery that we had no broadband. I never realised how reliant we had all become on it. No watching BBC iplayer, no films, no emails, no banking, no quick searching for the crossword answers for the Saturday morning newspaper…oh yes and more importantly, no working at home! Both for the business and personally I don’t remember life without being permanently plugged in to the web. For a while my children got to experience life in the school holidays with no internet – life as my childhood was - having to resort to digging around in the back of the cupboard in the vague hope of finding something marginally more interesting to do than watching what was on TV! Walking the dogs (for longer than normal) and coming down to dinner when called have become the norm in our house. I’m beginning

to quite enjoy the lack of broadband. I might even feel a bit sad when the engineer gets here and fixes it….mind you I do just need to go and check Twitter and has anyone posted anything interesting on Facebook….?! Speaking of warm fuzzy feelings, Valentine’s Day is soon. Food, gifts, beauty treatments and meals are all on offer in the Handy Mag this month. Make sure you make your loved one feel special. My other half is usually working away but we send a text – so romantic!! This year please make the effort to shop locally and use local services. Many of our businesses are feeling the pinch. And remember to let them know that you found them in the Handy Mag when you call them. Well done to John Hurd for winning the December competition. Until next time…Marianne

Yorkshire Coast Dog Rescue
T
he Yorkshire Coast Dog Rescue team works tirelessly rescuing and re-homing as many dogs as they can in the area. The charity is run entirely by volunteers who rely completely on the generosity and support of the local community. “We have just taken another 7 dogs in since Christmas, all beautiful and all abandoned. We also take dogs from people who can no longer keep them through no fault of their own,” says Kate Collier, one of the volunteers. As the dogs are kept in boarding kennels or foster homes until they
find their “forever homes” the charity needs large funds to pay for their kennel fees alongside the bills for micro chipping, worming, flea treatments, vaccinations and more. Yorkshire Coast Dog Rescue was set by group of people who were passionate about helping unwanted and mistreated dogs. The charity has now been successfully running for over two and a half years and in 2011 they started a new branch in the Malton & Pickering area. During their first year, they managed to raise over £7500 and have high aims to top the
Bobby Oliver amount this year. “We have regular tombolas at Pets at Home at Clifton Moor and at Pickering Co-op. This year we would like to raise awareness starting by visiting local schools to talk to the children about looking after their pets.” Bobby, aged 10, and Oliver, aged 3, are both looking for their ‘forever home’ . If you fancy joining the Yorkshire Coast Dog
Rescue team and want to help raise money and awareness, or if you are interested in one of their dogs, like Bobby or Oliver, please contact them using the details below. They will be thrilled to welcome new volunteers. www.yorkshire-coast-dogrescue.com or T: 07583 269614, ycdogrescue@ btinternet.com. Reg Charity No. 1142941 Details of events can be found on page 57

Painting a rosy picture of home Where do you find a painter and decorator who’s as passionate about your home style as you are?
R
ichard Moore is one of Malton’s most well established painters and decorators. Job satisfaction is crucial to Richard, which means he’ll never, ever cut corners, plaster over any cracks or be satisfied with a less than top quality job. If you’ve had a DIY mishap, Richard can help put things right. He says: “I like to work with people who think of their house as their pride and joy, because that’s how I feel about my work. I like a job to look absolutely amazing when it’s finished.” As well as working for himself, Richard has also worked for builders and contractors, which means he has a good understanding of how decorating should be planned around building work. Richard can also carry out more complex decorating or joinery jobs on your home, including putting in skirting boards, hanging doors or adding cornicing, dado rails and coving. He has also experience of working on grand-scale projects, including adding gold-leafing, rag-rolling and stippling, and carrying out exterior decoration on listed buildings.
Most of Richard’s work comes through recommendation as he’s well trusted by his customers. Richard loves to work for people who have an unusual project to do, some creative ideas for their home or are redecorating and renovating an old or even listed home. Richard’s long experience means he can give lots of advice on what colours, styles and fixtures will work in a particular room, or how you can achieve the effect you want. For a reliable local decorator, call Richard now on 01653 693161 or visit his website to view examples of his work.

It’s February and the world is set to go into romance overload. But what about those relationships Hallmark doesn’t make a card for: the mistresses, the bits on the side and the forbidden loves? We’ve put together a selection of both classic and contemporary scandals so you can live vicariously through them…unless you have something you want to come clean about?!
Secret & Lies Madame Bovary
Gustave Flaubert Doctor’s wife, Emma Bovary leads an increasingly scandalous and yet, in her eyes, eternally boring life as she tries to escape the confines of her provincial existence. Trapped in a dull marriage and dreaming of passion, excitement and fulfilment, she finds that real life never fails to fall short of her great expectations. The book caused absolute outrage when it was first published, though there was no shortage of women claiming to be Madame Bovary. Gustave always maintained he based the character on himself…but there were obviously a LOT of bored French housewives in the nineteenth century.
The Bride Stripped Bare
Nikki Gemmell This is the story of an awakening of epic proportions. Why work in shades of grey when you can live your own life by your own rules in glorious Technicolor? A husband reveals a secret on his honeymoon, giving his wife the strength and the freedom to finally go after what she wants and desires...in the form of an inexperienced suitor.
The Post Birthday World
Lionel Shriver Affairs are usually referred to as ‘ill-fated’ and invariably it all ends in tears. Here’s a novel that starts with a kiss, or not, and then runs in two parallel stories. It’s the thinking man/woman’s Sliding Doors. Irina McGovern could lean in and kiss the rough around the edges, snookerplaying Ramsay, or she could choose not to and to remain faithful to her straight-laced partner, Lawrence. If we could see the repercussions of our actions, would we take that chance and steal a moment with someone? The book is about human relationships and how we’re all flawed. So basically, it’s damned if you do and…you get the picture. 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Lady Chatterley’s Lover
D.H.Lawrence Long before Desperate Housewives, people were having affairs with their gardeners. Constance Chatterley’s husband lies paralysed after a war injury and as she struggles with both the emotional and physical neglect, her head is turned by one Oliver Mellors. And boy, must he be good. The novel tackles the relationship between the upper and working classes as well as the battle between the body and mind. For a book written in the 1920s, it’s pretty explicit, making it a favourite of students forced to read Lawrence the world over.
Getting Rid of Matthew
Jane Fallon No one ever leaves their wife for their mistress. Do they? What happens when the excitement and thrill of a fling turn up on your doorstep and you’re instantly plunged into domesticity? The answer is simple: start operation Getting Rid Of Matthew. This involves making yourself as undesirable as possible. There are unexpected twists and turns for Helen who really needs to learn to be careful what she wishes for.
Notes on a Scandal
Zoë Heller Keep your friends close and your enemies closer. When Sheba the new comprehensive school art teacher embarks on an affair with an underage boy, she has only sixty-something year old fellow teacher Barbara to confide in. Barbara relishes the close friendship that has been established between the two of them, but it takes a sinister turn when she discovers the truth about the boy.

It keeps no record of wrongs Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
I
cut my finger while helping at Hope Central today! It wasn’t serious, but of course I made a fuss to get some sympathy, but it didn’t work. I joked, ‘I should call one of those lawyers that advertise on the TV and make a claim for an industrial injury’. I didn’t mean it, but it got me thinking about the culture we live in. How we don’t like to take responsibility for our actions, especially our mistakes or even accidents, we would much rather find someone to blame. It’s been the same since the beginning of the human race. When God was investigating if Adam had eaten some fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil God discovered; Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the snake and the snake didn’t have a leg to stand on! I remember reading an article about the worst excuses given on Car Insurance Claim Forms. My favourite was, ‘I pulled away from the side of the road, glanced at my Mother-in-Law and headed over the embankment!’ Whatever happens, it always seems to be someone else’s fault, unless of course it makes us look good. Sadly, this type of culture has made us very wary, scared that if we make a mistake or have an accident we will get blamed, or even worse, be sued. It doesn’t help that whenever someone who is in the public eye makes a mistake, however large or small, it seems their resignation is called for. I recognise that there are consequences to our actions and of course, if we break the law, we should be punished. However, I also know that some of the greatest lessons I learn are through making mistakes, being lovingly corrected and being given a second chance. I’m concerned our culture has become risk averse, driven by fear more than love and grace. Have we lost the ability to give a second chance or to offer forgiveness? A passage from the book of Corinthians in the Bible is often read at weddings because it is about love. It was never intended for weddings, it was a letter written to a church that had forgotten how to love: ‘Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not selfseeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.’ – 1 Corinthians 13:4-5 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you
to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 22 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing

We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers.

Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tired-out kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the customer wants, for extremely competitive prices.” For no-nonsense know-how, designs to suit you and a smooth installation process, contact Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms on 01904 764383.

...on dialects As goes tradition, I spent the New Year with our family friends in Milton Keynes, along with some other friends from London. Our more northern accents were therefore quite noticeable and, over dinner, we got into a heated discussion over whether you should ‘pass’ instead of ‘parse’ the salt, and whether we walk on ‘grass’ or ‘grarse’. Now we all know it’s really just small regional differences, but we do seem to feel oddly defensive about which pronunciation was really ‘correct’. And the differences didn’t end in minor pronunciation, but in words and the meaning of words. In this strange maze of roundabouts, common to our southern folk was, ‘skeen’ meaning cool, and ‘fresh’ is when something or someone is attempting to be cool, but failing... I think. And clothes are ‘garms’ and a drunk person is ‘leathered’ – all completely alien to me, to the complete astonishment of our friends. However, and likewise, trying to describe to them what we mean by being ‘paggered’, what on earth ‘eyyup’ was as a greeting and that ‘braying’ was not actually being a donkey but meaning beating someone up came with equal eyebrows raised. To reassure those that may now be feeling dialectally challenged, a good percentage of those present, old and young alike, weren’t sure of many of the words, regardless of origin. The concept of dialect tends to be attached to an older generation, and for that seen as on the wane. But as experienced over our New Year’s meal, newer dialect continues to be invented and used by younger people. So despite this age of mass communication, over the internet, texting, television, online video and so much more that might merge and homogenise our language, it seems we will be hanging on to our regional dialect for years to come. Maybe it’s a means of identification with ourselves and our region. Maybe we all, if secretly, prefer to be a bit rebellious and disregard ‘received pronunciations’. Maybe it’s a matter of the infamous Yorkshire pride that we don’t want to adopt the words of southern folk’! Regardless, I think dialects are a good thing, and it’s wonderful that they are still in effect. It keeps the language varied and interesting; and it gives us a sense of regional identity with the more traditional words providing unique insight into the history of local people. Speaking dialect ultimately represents freedom and individuality, and should be cherished and enjoyed.

The secret to staying on track If you’re tackling weight loss this year, Helen, Amanda and Linda, your local Slimming World consultants, can help you stay motivated to achieve your goals.
New Year is a time for setting goals and taking determined steps to make improvements to your life, wealth and health.
Staying motivated is key. When we are motivated we feel like we can take on any challenge, but once demotivation sets in, then even the smallest task can seem insurmountable. If you have set weight loss as a goal, make sure you take positive steps to keep your motivation high, so you can be guaranteed to enjoy the benefits before the year is even halfway through! Linda Welch, who runs Slimming World groups in Pickering and Seamer, said: “Successful weight loss isn’t just about losing weight, it’s about keeping it off too. The key is to make healthy, realistic changes to your lifestyle that you can keep up for the rest of your life.”
Set Small goalS
Break your task up into small, short term goals. Give yourself weekly targets of as little as a pound - and then congratulate yourself on achieving them. Small, sustainable changes make a big difference in the long run. And you are building up positive ‘credits’ in 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Focus on the one thing that’s most important to you, and stay with it. Diffusing your energy by trying to change too much at once will make you are less likely to keep your motivation. So prioritise, write a list and start with number one. A good tip from Helen is planning and monitoring. Planning meals and shopping and focusing on your progress week-by-week puts you more in control of your weight loss and less likely to be thrown off course by unexpected events.
RewaRd youRSelf
look at the poSitive
For every achievement, however big or small, reward yourself you deserve it. And remember to be flexible, says Amanda. It’s important not to become obsessive and get hung up on constantly weighing, counting and measuring what you’re eating. Being flexible by enjoying regular treats and special occasions means slimmers can lose weight or maintain a healthy weight without missing out.
Starting to exercise, cutting down on unhealthy food, changing your lifestyle. None of these are easy. Accept that there will be set-backs and bad days or bad weeks. But keep looking at the positives - what did you manage to achieve this week, or how are you going to do better next week? So plan ahead, have lots of small goals to help you reach your big goal, accept there will be set-backs and look at how other people have done what you would like to do. And keep going - you’re doing great! To keep those New Year’s Resolutions intact and maintain momentum towards your health and weight loss goal, grab the opportunity right now offered by your local Slimming World group.

FEBRUARY 2013 • ISSUE 85 1. To make the pastry, sift the flour into a bowl and add the diced butter. Using your fingertips, rub the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs. Stir in the egg and water and mix to a crumbly dough. Turn onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently until smooth. Wrap and chill the pastry for 20 minutes. 2. Roll the pastry out on a lightly floured surface and use to line a 25cm round deep metal pie tin (or a loose-based fluted flan tin). Crimp the pastry edge with your fingers and prick the base all over with a fork. Chill for 30 minutes. 3. Preheat the oven to 200oC/400oF/Gas 6 and place a baking sheet in the oven to heat. 4. To make the filling, melt the chocolate and butter in a heatproof bowl set over a pan of simmering water. Remove from the heat and stir in the golden syrup, maple syrup and sugar then whisk in the beaten eggs. Chop half the nuts and stir into the mixture. 5. Gently pour the mixture into the pastry case and sprinkle over the rest of the nuts (roughly chopping the hazelnuts and Brazil nuts, if using). Slide the pie tin onto the preheated baking sheet and bake for 15 minutes. Reduce the oven temperature to 180C/350F/Gas 4 and bake for a further 25-30 minutes until the filling has set and the pastry is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold.

Land Rover Freelander Land Rover has given its perennial premium compact SUV a nip and tuck for 2013 – but is it enough to keep buyers interested in the off-roader? We take it for a spin in the icy wilds of snow-blown Canada.
WHAT IS IT? Land Rover’s perennial compact SUV given a little wipe over with the flannel to freshen it up. The changes aren’t huge inside or out, but they’re enough to give it a new lease of life. The talking points on the outside are some smart new headlights, new rear tail-lights that look like dumpy red snowmen, and a more striking grille. Inside it’s had more attention with an Evoque-ess makeover.
WHAT’S UNDER THE BONNET? There are two diesel units which are both 2.2 litres in size but with different power outputs, 147 bhp and 187 bhp, they both offer four-wheel drive. There’s also a 150PS version in two-wheel drive form, but quite why you’d opt for that we have no

WHAT’S THE KIT LIKE? It’s on the inside where the manufacturer has really gone to work. The centre console is new and the old Terrain Response dial has been swapped for buttons from the Evoque. hitch assist that helps drivers line up their tow bar and clever voice activation. There are three new colours to choose from paint wise and the stereo system provided by Meridian is nothing short of extravagant.
ANY RIVALS? There are lots, and that’s the problem. Audi Q5, BMW X3, Volvo XC60 and VW Tiguan all represent very talented and capable alternatives to the rugged Brit. All are newer than the Freelander and are tough competition to the Land Rover.

off-road – some of the terrain we tackled on the launch was positively frightening and it sailed right through it.
WHAT’S OUR VERDICT?
The revisions inside bring the Freelander up to date, but we had rather hoped they’d have done more with the exterior. The new lights are striking, but nowhere near as bold as its sister cars which is a shame, however its capability off road can’t be doubted and despite its age we still think it’s a rugged alternative to some often rather boring Germanic offerings. It’s worth a look for the ponypulling set.
If you were hoping for a whole new car, you’ll be sorely disappointed. This revision is a nip and tuck at best bringing its styling into line with the other, newer models in the range. However there’s no denying that the Freelander is extremely capable

February is the time of year to think about perfect potatoes and smashing spuds.
February is the time of year to think about perfect potatoes and smashing spuds so make sure you buy some seed potatoes and have them ready for planting. Home grown potatoes are an incredibly good value crop and you’ll soon find that the so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable. If you don’t have much spare space in your garden, a patio or balcony will do as a 45cm (18in) diameter pot can produce a useful crop of spuds, just from a single tuber. Make sure the container is well supplied with drainage holes (add a layer of ‘crocks’ if necessary), fill it about two thirds full of compost, pop a tuber in the centre and add a further couple of inches of compost. As the foliage appears,
add more compost to cover it over and repeat until no more can be added. Keep the container well watered, then sit back and wait. Use a bigger container, such as one of the Stewart Smithy pots and you can plant three tubers however don’t be tempted to overload your pot with too many tubers or you’ll end up with much less impressive results. Most potatoes produce a
slightly earlier and somewhat heavier crop if the seed potatoes are allowed to ‘chit’ or produce small but sturdy sprouts before planting. Stand the tubers widest end uppermost in a seed tray or old egg carton and place these in a cool but frost free spot with plenty of natural light. After a few weeks the sprouts will be about 1cm tall, perfect for planting. Buy your seed potato tubers this month and you’ll have time to Continued over

chit them before planting.
The so-called humble spud is actually a very tasty and extremely versatile vegetable What to Grow: Different potatoes have different issues in the
kitchen and whilst I have my favourite, the new potato called ‘Charlotte’, I do grow others for their different cooking qualities: Steamed potatoes are delicious, especially if cooked the day you lift them. Try Vanessa, Dunluce, Edzell Blue and Lady Christl for some of the tastiest steamers. Just the thought of new potatoes dripping in chives and butter is wonderful; again these are best when freshly harvested. Try Lady Christl, Charlotte, Juliette, Casa Blanca, Nadine and Nicola. If you adore mashed potato then try Dunluce, Valour, Maris Bard, Lady Balfour and King Edward. If you love your potatoes in their jackets, then try Cara, Lady Balfour, Picasso, Kestrel, King Edward, Desiree and Valor. For great roast potatoes try Kestrel, Maris Piper, Desiree, Lady Balfour, Vivaldi and Edzel Blue. For the best chips, use Kestrel, King Edward, Maris Peer, Accord, Rooster and Edzel Blue. Potatoes are divided into ‘earlies’ (first to be harvested) and ‘main crop’, generally larger tubers, harvested later. Try ‘earlies’ if you have a newly created vegetable plot, especially if the soil has not been cultivated for several years. ‘Earlies’ will be in the ground for less time than main crops and are less likely to suffer from wire-worm attack. These small, slim gingery coloured larvae are the young stage of the click beetle and cause infuriating tunnelling in the tubers’ flesh. If garden space is an issue, ‘earlies’ are useful as they takes less space and are in the ground for a shorter period, giving you the opportunity to grow another fast-maturing crop such as lettuce or salad leaves after the potatoes have been lifted. No crop is without its share of problems and potato blight is the most infamous potato disease. The fungus responsible is sometimes hard to beat, especially in warm, damp years. It has the potential to kill off the growing plants and may even infect the tubers. Generally, ‘earlies’ suffer less with blight and you can also select varieties which show resistance to the infection such as Valor, Lady Balfour, Coleen and especially Sarpo Mira and Sarpo Axona. 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Slugs can also be a real menace, tunnelling into the tubers’ flesh and sometimes even hollowing them out completely. Try growing Cara, Desiree and Sante. ‘Earlies’ are likely to suffer less damage as they are not in the soil for so long. The biological control nematode Nemaslug works under the soil surface, has a brilliant effect and poses no threat to wildlife. Why not grow some great vegetables in 2013? Visit www.pippagreenwood.com, sign up for ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ and choose from a fantastic selection. You can also sign up for Pippa’s newsletter, receive a free e-book on organic gardening, buy Nemaslug and other biological controls and a hand-picked selection of garden products from her website. by Pippa Greenwood

Colic
No word strikes more fear in the hearts and minds of horse owners than “colic”; it can affect any horse, at any time, for a multitude of reason. Sadly, colic is still one of the biggest causes of death in horses worldwide but fortunately the vast majority of colic episodes will respond to medical treatment at home.
Signs of Colic Knowing and recognising signs of colic is very important for all horse owners as it will allow you to notice even subtle changes in your horse’s behaviour and allow us to attend to your horse as soon as possible. It must be remembered that no two colic episodes are alike and there is much variation in type, nature and severity of colic signs which include: • Pawing at the ground • Flank watching • Kicking or biting at the belly • Repeated lying down • Rolling • Holding head in unusual position • Repeated curling back of upper lip • Sweating • Stretching out as if to urinate • Dog sitting • Lying on back • Depression • No appetite
Types of Colic There are many different reasons for colic and often we are never really quite sure why a horse has shown colic signs. The vast majority of these are due to some sort of gastrointestinal problem.
What to do if your horse has colic • Call your vet immediately
- colic is a true veterinary emergency and time is of the

essence
• Place your horse in a small yard
or a well bedded stable to allow for easy and close observation • Remove all food from the stable until the vet arrives • If your horse is rolling violently, try gently walking them or keeping them standing. Violently rolling horses often hurt themselves so trying to prevent self trauma is helpful but don’t put yourself in danger
Colic Myth: Stopping your horse from rolling will stop the bowel from twisting. This is highly unlikely - happy healthy horses roll in the field and their bowel doesn’t twist. Walking your horse can however help distract from the pain and more importantly prevent them from self-traumatising. You must remember however not to walk your horse to exhaustion and to stop for a few minutes every so often to monitor for colic behaviour in your horse
What to tell the vet Your vet on arrival will probably ask you some of the following questions whilst he or she is observing your horse: • Any previous episodes of colic? And how did they resolve? • How old is your horse? • How long has your horse been colicky for? • What colic signs has your horse been showing? • Has your horse passed any
faeces?
• When did your horse last eat or drink?
• Any changes in diet or management lately?
• Is your mare pregnant? • If your mare has recently foaled, how long ago did she foal?
• What is your horse’s worming history?
Treatment After assessing all the different factors involved in your horse’s colic, your vet will decide on the appropriate course of treatment. This may include administration of fluids/electrolytes down a tube through the nose to the stomach, plus or minus some form of a laxative if an impaction is suspected. Pain relief is one of the corner stones of colic therapy and your vet will decided what drug and how much is appropriate. Once pain relieving drugs are given, we want to see a good response and the disappearance of all colic signs. If colic signs recur, it is vital that you contact your veterinarian as a horse that is still painful despite pain relieving drugs may need to be referred to a hospital for further investigation and possible surgery.
Colic Surgery One of the key decisions for the

vet is whether your horse will require surgery. The vast majority of colics do not require surgery and respond well to treatment at home but if your vet does feel that your horse needs surgery, or at least requires further investigation at a referral hospital, time is of the essence. The decision to take your horse to surgery can often be very difficult and unfortunately, due to the nature of colic, a rapid decision is required. Many factors are involved in making this decision such as severity of the problem, likelihood of a success, and of course, the expense, but your vet is well trained and will be able to help you make the right decision for the horse.
Is Colic My Fault? ...owners will commonly ask, but the answer is almost always no. Remember that horses are predisposed to colic because of their unusual gut and stomach arrangements! Avoiding rapid dietary changes, ensuring some exercise every day and practising good preventative health programmes are all sensible measures but even the best kept and most well managed horse can get colic. by Philip Simon BSc(Hons) BVM&S MRCVS Station House Vets Ltd

Take advantage of the Fersina Winter Sale
Bucking these times of austerity, Fersina Windows continue to provide excellent value to the region and have been trading in Malton for almost 27 years.
Fersina not only offer to pay your VAT on installations, they currently have a winter sale with limited availability. So if you’re one of the thousands of homeowners opting to improve rather than move, it’s a great time to extend your home with a stylish conservatory, or invest in an upgrade for your doors and windows. Good quality windows, doors and conservatories can help conserve energy and provide added home security, as well as making your property look great! The company’s ethos has always been based on superior work, professional staff and excellent customer service and with almost 27 years’ of trading in Malton, family-run firm Fersina have developed the experience and know-how to help customers make their dreams come true – whatever those dreams may be. Owner Alan Walker said: “Once upon a time people would come to us, we would explain what we do and see if it matched with what the customer wanted. Now customers come and we can just ask them ‘what do you want?”
WINDOWS
Fersina’s main business involves supplying top quality hand-finished German PVCu windows and doors. Their range of authentic-looking Georgian windows, popular in cream, are even acceptable in the National Park conservation area. Many of the windows Fersina upgrades and replaces are uPVC
REPAIRS
rather than wood. Unfortunately, many of the windows fitted in the 1980s and 90s are no longer up to modern-day building specifications, or had inadequate joints and fittings, and now need replacing. Wooden windows are also available in any style along with secondary glazing for period properties and triple glazing where required. As well as changing fashions in how we like our homes to look, technology and manufacture methods move on too. Fersina now supply the highest perfomance glazing available on the market making sure your home conserves as much energy as possible.
Fersina can repair locks and other window damage. They are familiar with many other glazing systems so you can benefit from this service regardless of where the windows were manufactured.
ROOFLINE
Fersina can provide a repair and replacement service for your fascias and gutters with high quality uPVC products.
GARAGE DOORS
Do you have heavy garage doors that are difficult to open? Are you worried about security or insulation? Electric roller garage doors are the perfect solution for any size of garage and driveway. They have a smooth vertical operation which maximises space both inside the garage and on your driveway.
DOORS
Fersina supply and fit a full range of composite doors to suit any design and budget, from economy-priced models to top-of-the-range designs. With many colours, Rock doors and their Welcome Collection, there is something for everyone.
CONSERVATORIES
Fersina specialise in glass roof conservatories, complete with hi-tech self-cleaning glass incorporating solar filters. And whatever colour conservatory you’d like, Fersina can supply it – even in green or black!
As well as treating their customers ethically, Fersina also try to take care of the environment – all the windows, doors and conservatories they take out are deglazed and recycled, and lead-free windows are available for those who want them. Take advantage of the winter sale and give Fersina a call on 01653 693590 or pay a visit to their showroom on Horsemarket Road, Malton.
