elcome to the January Edition of the Handy Mag! We hope you had a good Christmas and Santa brought you all that you wished for!
We’re already thinking of our New Year’s Resolutions and hopefully here at Handy Mag, we will stick to them a bit longer this year! My New Year’s Resolution is to get more exercise enjoying the fresh air and our lovely Ryedale countryside with the dogs. Maybe even try to take more time away from the computer screen – except that there is so much going on in the area with businesses and events, this is always a big challenge! As it is a big birthday year for Nicky, she says she’s going to have lots of fun this year with more time for herself – I think her young boys might have other plans for her! Faith says she’s going to cut down

on her Marmite consumption – always one for a challenge! So as we say goodbye to 2015 and hello to 2016, we’re delighted to bring you our New Year edition, packed with ideas to help kick-start your year. Greet the New Year with some activities and events to keep you going throughout our dark and miserable January. And of course January wouldn’t be January without a fabulous pantomime! Goldilocks and the Three Bears will be appearing at the Milton Rooms from 15th January to 23rd January or The Snow Queen makes an appearance in Pickering at the Kirk Theatre. Oh yes she does! November’s Handy Mag competition winner was Mrs S Boardman from Pickering – well done for finding all five hidden rockets in the magazine. All that remains is to wish all our readers a very successful and healthy New Year.

We started in 2013 to raise money to pay for bus services to and around the North York Moors. We ran the Sunday “Moors Rambler” service in 2014, the “Moors Rambler” and the “Endeavour” in 2015, and we would like to run at least three routes in 2016. We are volunteers, and all the fares go towards the services for the following year. Our buses accept concessionary passes, and all the pass rebate we can claim from the County Council also goes to pay for buses for the following year. In 2015 we covered 43% of our bus costs through fares and passes, thanks to 2890 passenger journeys, so we already have nearly enough funds for two buses for 2016. In 2015 our routes included Pickering, Kirkbymoorside, Hutton-le-Hole, Castleton, Danby; also Osmotherley, Northallerton, Thirsk, Sutton Bank, Helmsley, Rievaulx, Bilsdale, Stokesley and Great Ayton. We would like to achieve more destinations and more operating days in 2016. Where else do you think we should go? You can help us by donating to our bus fund, or by asking your Town or Parish Council to support us. Find out more at www.moorsbus. org, or email friendsofmoorsbus@outlook. com. And we always welcome phone calls too, on 01751 477216.” Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 12th January

How Do You Relate to Each Other After the Festive Season? At Relate, we know Christmas can put a big strain on families. In January, we get an increase in calls from people struggling with tensions that have developed over the festive season: dealing with extended family, money worries, step children, ex-partners, intensive time together and loneliness can take their toll. There are some steps you can take during first days of New Year for a happy start to 2016: • Consider what the real issue is. Can you pin-point the problem? Is it something that occurs regularly or is it unique to the festive period? Being able to identify the problem and the root cause of it can go some way to helping solve it. • Think about everyone’s part in the problem, as it’s easy to blame someone else. • Gather together the relevant individuals involved and try to have a discussion about it. • Avoid starting the discussion when you’re angry, as you won’t be constructive. • Set a time and place (preferably a neutral location) where there
•
• •
•
won’t be any interruptions and make sure the other people know what you want to talk about so they have a chance to prepare. Try to ensure that the discussion goes well. A good way to do this is to allot each person the same length of time to explain how they feel about the situation and what they would suggest as a ‘fix’ for the future. It’s best not to interrupt when someone is talking, and listen actively. At the end of a person’s time, clarify what you heard by reflecting it back to them to see if it is accurate. Keep to the topic and don’t try to cover earlier incidents – think about what happened
specifically this year. • Use positive phrases to explain how you feel such as “I”, rather than “You made me …”, for example. • When each person has had their say, find common ground. • Can an agreement be reached during the session? If not, set another date when people have had a chance to think. If none of this works and you keep going round in circles, then it might just be worth considering talking to a professional to help with your communication. Relate counsellors are trained to work with couples and families in a wide range of situations.

Natural Balances
Names and words that seemed to baffle, Like ‘kimblewick’ and ‘eggbutt snaffle’. Such ‘horsey’ talk and equine terms, Became a whole new can of worms. Well meaning were my eager askings, Of forelocks, fetlocks, stifles, gaskins! My soul mate would elucidate All aspects of the ungulate. Pie-bald, roan and dappled grey, From quarter horse to Cleveland bay; Skew-bald, Dartmoor, Welsh and shire, Were all discussed around the fire. Her happy whinny, my lusty bray, She would nicker and I would neigh, A move to mine would then enable, The two of us to share a stable. Then whilst our friendship was cementing, We’d talk of trials and eventing. Horse play mixed with cosy banter Saw love progress from walk to canter. Galloping daily was such fun, Until one day, our race was run; I spread a plate and pulled up lame, And never more to make the frame. A hippophile, with gifted smile, Once hitched her wagon for a while. I set her loose one fateful day. ‘Hi ho Silver,’- and away.

I hit my target in December 2014, almost a year after I joined Slimming World,” explained Phoebe. “Attending weekly meetings made such a difference to me that I decided to become a consultant myself.” Phoebe never lets members use the word ‘diet’, as Slimming World’s ethos is about healthy eating for life. HOW DO I OBTAIN A DIVORCE? CAN I BE FORCED TO LEAVE MY HOME? WHO WILL KEEP THE MARITAL HOME? WHERE WILL THE CHILDREN LIVE? CAN I KEEP THE WHOLE OF MY PENSION? These are just a few of the questions we are frequently asked by clients who are considering or facing a breakdown in their relationship.
DIVORCE
The only ground for divorce is the irretrievable breakdown of your marriage. The person who starts the divorce proceedings is known as the “Petitioner” and the other spouse is called the “Respondent”. To satisfy the court that there has been an irretrievable breakdown, the Petitioner must prove one of five facts which include adultery by your spouse, unreasonable behaviour by your spouse, desertion for a continuous period of two years immediately before the start of the divorce, separation for a period of two years immediately before the start of the divorce and your spouse consents to the divorce or the parties have lived apart for a continuous period of five years immediately before the start of the divorce. Five years separation does not require the Respondent’s consent.
FINANCIAL MATTERS
The court always has power to make orders for financial support between husband and wife unless or until a clean break order has been made. After a divorce the court can make various other orders including for payment of a lump sum, property rights and a pension sharing order. It can also make a clean break order which prevents either or both spouses from making any further financial claims against the other or against
his or her estate after death. If you cannot agree on financial arrangements you can apply to the court for a decision. Most cases are settled by agreement sometimes with the help of a Judge who can make suggestions about what is fair. Each spouse will need to make full disclosure of financial and other information In deciding what might be a fair financial settlement the Judge and Solicitors will have regard to the following legal factors: 1. The first consideration is given to the needs of your children (under 18). For this reason the possession of the former matrimonial home after a separation is often given to the spouse with whom the children live 2. The income (including earning capacity) capital assets and other financial resources of each Spouse 3. The financial needs of each spouse including outgoings and debts 4. The length of the marriage 5. Your and your spouse’s ages 6. The standard of living enjoyed during the marriage 7. The contributions made by either of you including financial contributions of income and capital and contributions of looking after the home and
bringing up a family 8. Conduct of the parties (only if it would be inequitable for the court to disregard it: conduct is rarely taken into account) 9. Loss of pension rights e.g. resulting from the divorce 10. Disability of either you or your spouse
MAKING A WILL
Divorce revokes any legacy in favour of your former spouse and re-marriage revokes any previous will unless it has been stated that Will has been made in contemplation of that remarriage. Divorce is a good time to make a Will.
INHERITANCE CLAIMS You have the right to make a claim against the estate of your deceased spouse under the Inheritance Act 1975 if your spouse has not made reasonable financial provision for you in the Will or as a result of the Intestacy Rules applying.
You have a similar right against the estate of your former spouse if you have neither remarried nor been prevented by court order from making such a claim.
Philip Chapman and Lorna Pratt at Mitchells will always be happy to answer any queries that you may have and advise and act for you in relation to Divorce or other Family Law matters. 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WALK TO FREEDOM Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
“I still vividly remember the televised ‘walk to freedom’ that was shown around the world. I was inspired by the way he took Winnie Mandela’s hand as he took those first steps and raised their fists in victory to the crowds that lined the streets.” Somehow Mandela didn’t allow his past to influence his future. He was able to move on, to let go and find a better future.
I love January, not just because it’s my birthday but because it feels like a brand new start. I’m not keen on making New Year resolutions, I can’t keep them, but I do like the opportunity to leave the past behind. I’m a born optimist, I enjoy change, and I like a fresh challenge because I easily get bored. I always believe that bigger and better is within my grasp and don’t mind working hard to get there. January feels like an empty book waiting to be written the beginning of a brand new adventure. However, I do realise not everyone sees a New Year in the same way. In 1990, Nelson Mandela was released from Victor Verster prison after 27 years. I still vividly remember the televised ‘walk to freedom’ that was shown around the world. I was inspired by the way he took Winnie Mandela’s hand as he took those first steps and raised their fists in victory to the crowds that lined the streets. Nelson Mandela had a new beginning and within a year he was the leader of the African National Congress (ANC) and within five years Nelson Mandela became South Africa’s first black president. The best was still to come but how did he deal with his past? 18 years of his prison sentence were spent on Robben Island where Mandela was made to do hard labour. He was incarcerated for standing up to a white government who had introduced ‘apartheid’, a system written in law to keep white and black people apart. Mandela believed in liberty and equality for all, regardless of skin colour and belief but it cost him his freedom. When I listen to his first speech, I don’t remember words of anger, a desire to take revenge or bitterness towards those who had put him in prison. 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
For some a New Year can be filled with sadness, regret or frustration. Looking back on bad decisions or life’s unexpected turns brings pain, anxiety and a sense of hopelessness. But this New Year is your opportunity to take a ‘walk to freedom’. When Nelson Mandela made those first few steps he wasn’t wearing his old prison clothes and he wasn’t carrying any luggage, he left it all in the past where it belonged. Why don’t we do the same?

Make 2016 the year you reach your full potential As you move into the New Year you will no doubt be looking to set a few New Year resolutions (or two?!). You may want to: • • • • • •
Learn new skills Find a new career Gain new qualifications Take up a new hobby Improve your health and wellbeing Make new friends
Gill Garbutt, Programme Coordinator for Ryedale from the North Yorkshire County Council’s Adult Learning and Skills Service, talks about how the service can open the door to your future learning goals - whatever they may be.
What courses does the service offer?
We offer a wide range of workshops and part time courses available for adults in the Ryedale area including: accounting and business administration courses, computing courses, functional skills, apprenticeships, learning for leisure, arts and crafts and health. There is a course for everyone and support is readily available to find the right course to suit your individual needs.
What would you say to a potential learner who is concerned about the financial cost of learning? To help make learning affordable for everyone, concessionary fees are available and some of our courses which support employment skills are free
if you are unemployed, receiving state benefits and actively seeking work. Our advice is if you are concerned about the affordability linked to any of our courses, and are unsure of your available options; please book a confidential and free appointment with a Learning and Skills Adviser.
What would you say to a potential learner who is nervous and lacks the confidence to engage in learning? It is about the learning journey as much as the learning outcome. All our tutors are committed to encouraging and supporting you to reach your full potential in a friendly and welcoming learning environment. Learners are given the opportunity to make new friends in a relaxing atmosphere and to gain a new skill or hobby at the same time. There is a level to suit your individual requirements, regardless of your starting point.
What would you say to someone who is contemplating enrolling on a course for 2016…
Why not make 2016 the year you make it happen and gain those skills and qualifications you have longed to achieve. If your aim for 2016 is to undergo a complete career change, get back into work or gain a work promotion; but you worry you lack the skills to make this change or struggle to see the best place to start then get in touch with the service.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

BRITISH MADE, OVEN BAKED AND READY FOR YOUR FIRE THIS WINTER!
I
t is a rarity nowadays for log suppliers to sell logs that are grown and sourced within this country. Corners Warmers pride themselves on supplying logs which are predominantly sourced from Yorkshire, thereby reducing the carbon footprint and supporting the reason many people choose to burn logs to keep their houses warm.
To demonstrate its capability: If you were to put freshly felled logs (which could be as much as 70% moisture) into the kiln it would take only 3 days to dry the logs to only 15% moisture. Kiln dried logs not only burn extremely hot but they are also a ‘clean’ burn so they do not produce as much soot.
The timber is transported to the farm in Easingwold where it is seasoned for at least 12 months prior to getting sawn up. The logs are then cleaned and stored in the log barn before delivery. The resulting logs are never more than 20% moisture and produce a good heat output. Andrew Corner believes that in this day and age it is often important to the customer that the fuel they buy is sustainable and its origin is traceable.
Andrew speaks from experience when he says, “We have burnt these logs on our own woodburner and were impressed to find that we didn’t even need kindling or firelighters to start the fire. He continues, “We just placed the kiln dried logs on a bed of newspaper, ignited it and the logs commenced burning immediately”. The kiln is heated by a woodchip biomass boiler. The woodchip used in the boiler is a by-product of the wood processing. There is therefore no waste from the conversion of the felled timber, to the dry logs that are delivered to the customers’ homes. For dry, local logs for your home, call Corners Warmers on 07967 301368 or 01347 823645
Customers can also have the option of buying kiln dried logs as as a kiln was installed on the farm in 2014 (see photo). A massive 24 cubic metres of logs can be dried in the kiln at any one time.

A GOOD READ By Willow Coby
Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins
Praise for this novel, first published at the beginning of 2015, has spread like wildfire and it has become THE book to read. So just in case you are one of the few that hasn’t succumbed to this thriller, why should you pick it up? Whether you are a regular commuter, like the central character Rachel, or not, you will easily be able to identify with the opening section. How many times have you sat on a train and looked out of the window into the garden or kitchen windows of the houses that back onto the tracks, as you speed past on your way to your final destination. As you catch glimpses into a life that you don’t know, do you wonder about the people that occupy those houses? Rachel doesn’t have to wonder. She passes familiar houses every day and purposefully looks for Jess and Jason, a young professional couple who live a perfect life. She knows them and is in many ways envious of their relationship. Seeing them in their garden is a moment of comfort as her own life is falling apart. But is all as it seems? On one day, as the train slows down at a signal by the house, Rachel notices that something is amiss. Suddenly she is sucked into a nightmare that seems destined to reveal everything, and that will shock you as her commuter journey turns out to be anything but normal. It’s a small world, but when that world comes crashing down around you, it becomes all too clear that this small world is a lot smaller than you first thought.
Midnight for Charlie Bone
by Jenny Nimmo It is now nearly a decade since the last Harry Potter book was published, and a new generation are quite rightly discovering this wonderful world of wizards and magic. Just like the generation before them, they are left with a void after reading them all, and so where do they turn? The Charlie Bone series of books may well be just what they are looking for. Published in 2002, Midnight for Charlie Bone is the first of this eight book series. Charlie is a fairly normal 10 year old boy. His father died when he was little, and he lives with his mum and two grandmas, and hangs out with his best friend Ben. One Friday Charlie hears voices coming from a photograph, and then his whole life 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
changes. He learns that his three unmarried great-aunts, known as the Yewbeams, are going to fund his education and a private school called Bloor’s Academy. Charlie is not happy about this: he knows the school to be a stuffy place for geniuses, and he certainly won’t fit in there. But the Yewbeams are insistent: and besides, they pay for his mum’s living expenses and so he really has no choice. They explain to Charlie that he is ‘endowed’ and can read the minds of people in photographs. Everyone at Bloor’s Academy has a talent. Charlie’s father went there and he was a musician. But what is Charlie’s talent? Placed in the music department at Bloor’s, despite having no musical talent, it becomes clear that there is another group of children at the school who are all endowed with some mystical magical talent. Soon he finds that he was born into a world he never knew existed.

NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS BY PETE BROADLEY
LOCAL PARENT & BRAND NEW COLUMNIST!
A
t this time of year people are thinking about making New Year’s resolutions, and after the Christmas excess it is no surprise that most relate to health and fitness. The majority of people have a lapse within the first few days and by the end of the month the resolve is all but gone. If we’re honest it was only ever a matter of time. A snap decision made just before midnight with a glass in hand is hardly the basis for sound choices. So this year I’ve resolved not to make any. My lifestyle is largely dictated by the routines of two young girls, who only have a limited understanding of the workings of the calendar, and they would be mystified by a sudden change my behaviour. We all know money can be tight in January, and it’s a long time ‘til payday, so I won’t be committing to an expensive new gym membership! In the evening, by the time the children are in bed (and hopefully asleep) and we’ve moved an assortment of toys off the floor, I often feel too tired to contemplate going out. It’s cold and dark out there, hardly the weather to be out jogging. I think it’s much more sensible to stay indoors, wrap up under a blanket and maybe put the fire on. And there’s no harm in a little snooze. It would be very easy to feel guilty. There’s a constant battle in trying to get the children to eat healthily, and the demands of trying to juggle a busy schedule doesn’t always gel with the pressure to be fit and healthy. But there’s still half a Stilton in the fridge and it would be a terrible shame for it to go waste. The same goes for the last of the Christmas crisps, nuts and those last remaining Quality Street … waste not, want not, as the saying goes; the health kick can wait till the spring!

FEELING THE PINCH AFTER CHRISTMAS AND MAKING SOME NEW YEAR RESOLUTIONS? What about your pet – are they in tip top condition or has their weight slowly crept up or even down over the last year? It’s easy to miss gradual changes in body weight when we are with our pets every day. Here’s an easy way to tell if your dog is overweight or underweight: Use your hands to try to feel their ribs. If your dog is overweight, it will be hard to feel the bone underneath your pet’s flesh. If your dog is underweight, the ribs will feel sharp to the touch and will be distinctly visible. You may be able to see the indentation of a healthy dog’s ribs, but you should not be able to count each one. The same applies to cats, you should be able to feel their ribs with light pressure. Now, look at your pet from above, they should have a well-proportioned waste line with the waste narrower than the ribs. If your pet is overweight, consider all the food they are getting daily, dry food, canned food, tit bits from the table or treats. Have a look at the recommended feeding guide for the ideal weight of your pet (bearing in mind most feeding companies tend to over-estimate your pets requirements) and consider weighing out the food they are going to have each day. If they are getting titbits remember that what appears to us as small amounts of food can be a considerable amount of your pet’s daily calorie requirement, so consider using some of their own food instead or low calorie treats like bits of raw carrot or broccoli. Encouraging activity can also help though be careful with older pets or those with mobility issues. If you are not seeing any changes consider a lower 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WHY NOT MAKE YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION TO VOLUNTEER FOR RYEDALE DOG RESCUE? January is always a busy time for Ryedale Dog Rescue. Sadly, despite the constant message that ‘a dog is for life, not just for Christmas’ we still see large numbers of unwanted and abandoned dogs finding their way into the council pounds where they will only have a limited amount time before they are destroyed. We try to take as many dogs as we can afford. Could you decide which dogs to take and which to leave behind? It’s heart-breaking but we have to make these decisions and it is never easy - if we could afford it we would take them all... So, we need volunteer fundraisers who can help us bring in as much money as possible so we don’t have to leave a dog behind. We are a small volunteer run charity and every penny we raise is spent on rescuing dogs and finding them a loving forever home. We need people who can
DOG OF THE MONTH: SASHA Sasha is a five year old pretty red staffie. She is a very friendly, cheerful little girl and would make a fantastic family pet. If you think you may be able to offer Sasha the loving forever home she deserves or if you would like to know more about any of the dogs we currently have for adoption please call. man a stall, help at dog shows, run a car boot, bake, sew and any other ways you can think of to help us raise vital funds. We are a small friendly team and we always welcome new ideas...if you can spare an hour or two a week or even a month. Any time you can give will help us to save another dog.
For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. ENJOY MAKING MUSIC BUT DON’T WANT THE PRESSURE OF CONCERTS? Why not join the Friday Rehearsal Orchestra? The FRO was founded in February 1990. The idea of a ‘Rehearsal’ orchestra is that it has the pleasure of playing all sorts of orchestral music without the obligation to give public concerts. This means it can be both relaxed and adventurous. Because of the friendly atmosphere it is a good place for beginner musicians to gain their first experience of orchestral playing, before facing the public. At the other end of the scale (!) it’s an opportunity for people who have neglected their dusty violins for years to get them out and get going again. The orchestra meets weekly at the Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall on Fridays at 7.30. There are two ten-week seasons: September to December and January to March.

They champion historic places, helping people to understand, value and care for them, now and for the future. This illustrated tour showing the many ways in which Historic England uses aerial photography to discover and protect our heritage, with a particular focus on Yorkshire. Aerial photography allows us not only to see and appreciate historic sites and landscapes from a different perspective, but it has also revealed thousands of archaeological sites previously hidden from view. This fully illustrated talk will include a short history of aerial photography (including brief appearances from cow’s intestines, pigeons and lasers) showing how more than 100 years of developments in technology have helped us to better understand the history of England, with a particular focus on Yorkshire. 7.30pm at The Library, East Wing, Malton School, Middlecave Road, Malton. GARDENING
Gardening Resolutions I’m a sucker for resolutions. I make loads every year though I have to admit I break most of them too. But it’s January and time for a spot of gardening self-improvement. To this end here are my gardening resolutions.
1.
I will take a daily walk around my plot and pull out a few weeds as I go. I will not wait until I can’t stick a pin between the dandelions. Let’s face it gardeners are great procrastinators. But by doing a little and often we can keep our plots looking spick and span.
2.
I will not leave seed sowing until it’s too late!
“Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy” This is my personal nemesis. I get carried away by all the glorious seed catalogues, order dozens of packets then pop them in a drawer and forget about them.
3.
4.
Plants bought from a nursery, especially those in cell pack, are already in less than ideal conditions
This is sensible because dirty tools can spread disease. Mild bleach
RATS, MOLES, MICE, WASPS, FLEAS
• Domestic & Agricultural • Efficient, friendly, professional fully insured service • NPTA Accredited
I will clean my gardening tools at the end of each day spent gardening.

Preparation is the key here. I will make sure I have the correct pots, enough potting compost and the time to spare before I buy.
I will plant all the plants I buy from a nursery as soon as a get them home and definitely before their flowers drop off and they turn up their little green toes.
PEST CONTROL 07900 813199
and letting them dehydrate further will make for a sick, leggy plant more prone to disease.

>> (one part bleach to 10 parts water) or an organic cleaner, which I prefer, will make sure they’re ready for use next time.
5.
I will buy another water butt and water my plants faithfully, particularly my pots. Lack of water produces weak root systems. If I know I won’t have the time I’ll invest in an irrigation system.
6.
I will start another compost bin. it’s not difficult and will help the environment as I’ll be able to recycle even more of my waste vegetable matter. There are small drums and bins which will suit even the tiniest spot.

7.
I will help wildlife by making sure I provide habitats for birds, bugs and beasties.
Any effort I put in will be repaid tenfold. A garden is a little ecosystem. If it functions well there will be natural pest control, pollination and soil conditioning. Those are my resolutions. You may have different ones and that’s fine. I’m sure we’ll break a few along the way but no-one said the path to perfection, particularly gardening perfection was easy.

Review of 2015 Here at the Handy Mag office, we’ve thoroughly enjoyed looking back at 2015, a bumper year for local events! JANUARY The month for a traditional panto, Marianne and Nicky enjoyed the Malton and Norton Musical Theatre’s production of Robin Hood at the Milton Rooms. It was laugh-a-minute all the way and there was still some chuckling going on the next morning!
FEBRUARY
Sinnington Hunt Point to Point celebrated its Ruby Anniversary this month at Duncombe Park.
MARCH With the arrival of spring local events came thick and fast, including the first Malton Monthly Food 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Market of the year in conjunction with the colourful Cajun and Zydeco Festival in the Milton Rooms. The Chanticleer Singers held a concert in the lovely village of Lastingham. In fact, most of our local choirs embarked on a new annual programme in March.
APRIL Ryedale Festival had its launch concert with the Endymion chamber ensemble at St Peter’s Church, Norton. Meanwhile over in Kirkbymoorside, the town’s Environment Group held its Give or Take Day when unwanted goods, from pillow cases to electrical items, could be taken to the Memorial Hall for exchanging – a great way to have a spring declutter!
Malton Food Lovers Festival took place at the end of May, with the Handy Mag team in the thick of it in the market place running the festival’s Pudding Hunt. The team were kept busy blowing up our pink and silver balloons and carrying them through an extremely busy Market Place in duvet covers for safe transportation. The husband of one of the celebrity chefs lost his famous spouse in the crowds and came to the Handy Mag team for help! They were reunited soon after.
MAY The Tour de Yorkshire made its way to Norton at the beginning of the month (Marianne was in the town to help cheer on the cyclists). Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 12th January

JUNE The second annual Malton Festival of Cycling took place in the town’s market place. Over in Slingsby, the famous, fun-filled Duck Race gathered pace this month and the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta was commemorated in historic Helmsley.
The Milton Rooms saved the day for Harmonia Ladies and York Philharmonic Male Voice Choirs as they were unable to use St Michaels Church due to a break in. The concert went ahead and was a fantastic event.
JULY The Handy Mag team all ‘rocked out’ at the Pickering Music Festival which featured guest musicians such as From the Jam, Glass Caves and Huge.
Ryedale Jazz Festival events were almost a sell-out, while the annual Malton Agricultural Show was held at nearby Scampston Hall. Marianne went along with her family as usual, and enjoyed an afternoon with the cattle, sheep and vintage tractors!
AUGUST AND SEPTEMBER Handy Mag’s August/ September edition was crammed with events, including the inaugural Malton Game and Seafood Festival, the annual Malton Open Stables Day and the Veterans Rugby Charity Match at Malton & Norton Rubgy Club. Thornton le Dale Scarecrow Festival took place at the end of August, while local Women’s Institutes celebrated their centenary year – a truly remarkable achievement.
OCTOBER
Malton was treated to an amazing weekend with almost 40 events at Ryedale Book Festival all organised by local volunteers. The annual Malton and Norton Pride Awards recognised many special people who contribute to our local community in a sparkling ceremony. The Handy Mag team sponsored the Teacher of the Year, and thoroughly enjoyed the fireworks, a tasty meal and a packed evening of celebration and entertainment.
Nicky and her young family went to see a spectacular firework display with a James Bond theme thanks to Kaboom! at Castle Howard.
NOVEMBER
Remembrance Day events were held throughout the region, and the Handy Mag published a special listing for the services commemorating this special occasion.
DECEMBER Along with lots of Christmas Light SwitchOns, Santa helped out both the Malton, Norton and District Lions and Ryedale Lions with their Sleigh Runs, raising funds for local charities across Ryedale.
Big congratulations this month went to Helmsley in Business group who helped Helmsley win the Best British Market Town in the Great British High Street competition. At the Handy Mag, we are looking forward to another exciting and full year of supporting our local communities and businesses in 2016! www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 73
