elcome to our January edition. I think a lot of us will be glad to see the back of 2016. What a traumatic year! I don’t suppose many of the problems will be solved quickly in 2017 but we can only hope for more positivity and sensible decision-making. All we can do is focus on making our own local area and lives the best they can be. On that note, there are many local groups and organisations to get involved with - from sports clubs to bridge! If you’d like to find a new hobby or join a social group or fundraise for a local cause, have a look through this month’s edition for ideas. At the Handy Mag we had a pretty good 2016 with lots of changes, the best one being our lovely new offices. They are now looking great inside (and

smelling better – they were very fusty!), thanks to a redecoration and some pictures. I love being able to see out over the Market Place at one side and the Wolds at the other. Malton Market Place is very busy – not that we spend hours staring out of the windows but it does help us think! If you are feeling the post-Christmas blues, why not head out to the countryside and blow those cobwebs away. Or go and see one of the great local pantos to help cheer you up. There is lots to do as usual in our what’s on listings. Our local businesses will be hoping for your support in 2017 when everyone is nervous about what the future will hold. Give them a chance and shop/use local when you can. A very Happy New Year to all of our readers, advertisers, columnists and contributors. Well done to Louise Tyler of Norton for winning our November competition. Until next month…

THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA FREE OF CHARGE - BOOKINGS NOW BEING TAKEN Want to save money and fuel this winter? Thinking about improving your wall and roof insulation? Find out where heat is escaping from your home. KMEG volunteers have been using a Lottery funded camera in the Kirkbymoorside area since 2012, The camera picks up heat, rather than light like a normal camera. Heat can be lost around windows, doors and skirting boards, or up the chimney of an unused fireplace. Here heat is being lost through a bay window and through the wall from a radiator under the window. You choose if you want any pictures taken. They can be emailed or printed for you. There’s no charge for the camera, but small donations towards insurance and calibration of the camera are always welcome. To book the camera: email Helen Gundry at helenspost@hotmail.co.uk or phone 01751 432447. We’ll fix a good time to call round with the camera. The best weather conditions are cloudy, dry and cold! MALTON MUSEUM SEEKS HANDWRITTEN RECIPES OF RYEDALE Before the memories of festive feasts fade away, Malton Museum is asking for your help in a fascinating new project, with a foody theme, that we are planning as we move into the second year of our ‘Malton Goes to Market’ project which will open in April 2017. Well-known food historian, Peter Brears, says, ‘Ryedale has a long history of agriculture and for hundreds of years Malton’s market was famous for the sale of items of food, a history that continues today through its wonderful food markets.’ However, memories of the simple everyday things soon get lost, so we plan to collect recipes and stories, from the Ryedale area, connected with producing, cooking and eating, in order to preserve them for future generations. With Peter’s expert help we will then publish selected ones in a recipe book.

Therefore, we are appealing for your help. Do you or your family and friends have, or know of, handwritten or locally published collections of recipes or memories of stories passed down the generations that you would be willing to share with us – to let us look at them, and perhaps to copy and use selected ones? If so, please email the museum on enquiries. maltonmuseum@gmail.com or leave us a message on 01653 691262, with your contact details and a brief description of what you can offer. We will contact you and arrange either for you to bring things to the museum or to collect them from you. Thanks to National Lottery players the Heritage Lottery Fund supported project, Malton Goes to Market, is exploring the development of Malton as a market town.

For more information on the project and how to be involved visit maltonmuseum.wordpress.com

Celebrating

26 Years of making windows & doors

Manufactured & supplied by the local experts

Window Distribution, based on York Road Industrial Estate in Malton is celebrating 25 years in business in 2017. It is a real success story and the reasons are simple: they listen to their customers, value their staff and support their local community. Andy Dykes, manager, who has worked at Window Distribution for almost 24 years, says “When you live in a small town like Malton, where everyone knows everyone else, it pays to put the customer at the heart of your business. Every member of staff has been here a very long time and takes pride in their individual roles within the company, ensuring that the end-product is delivered to the customer of the highest standard. This is coupled with an excellence after sales service.”

As part of their commitment to their local area, Window Distribution has provided sponsorship to a number of local organisations. As well as sponsoring the Malton and Norton Lions Santa Sleigh in December, they have also helped Brooklyn Under 13s Football Team with their kit. The new season jackets sport the Window Distribution logo. Andy explains “By sponsoring Brooklyn Under 13s we not only get some great advertising for the company but put ourselves in front of potential employees of the future.”

In these uncertain economic times, it is great to hear positive news of a local business investing in staff and machinery. Window Distribution is upgrading some of its machinery in 2017 to make production easier, which means better quality and value for their customers. Why not go and have a look at their factory? Talk to Andy or Sophy and tell them exactly what you need. Their door is always open. This is what makes Window Distribution really very special: whatever the shape, whatever the size, whatever the colour – they

can meet your needs. It is because they manufacture on-site, that they can offer this bespoke service to you. Sophy Daniels, says “We have great relationships with our customers and they return to us again and again, not just for a chat, but for more advice and our excellent products.” The team at Window Distribution make sure they keep up to date with current trends in the industry. Astragal Bars (or ‘stick on bars’ to you and me) give the appearance

of a Georgian window, divided into multiple panes. But unlike Georgian window bars, which are integral to the window and set inside the sealed units, astragal bars are fixed to the glass on the inside and out. You can achieve the traditional, crafted look of multiple panes on a single piece of glazing. If you drop into the factory you can see for yourself.

With a fully stocked trade counter offering everything from silicone, fixing bolts, door cylinders, hinges and handles. Everything you need under one roof. The one stop shop for complete service. Go and have a chat with the Window Distribution team and visit the factory on Seven Street, York Road Business Park, Malton or visit their website at www.windowdist.com. now a promise of further visits to the pool. It just goes to show that with a little encouragement and support, our service users can reestablish loved activities and bring back the spark of fun in their lives. Not only has Side By Side benefitted those with dementia, our volunteers love doing it too. We recently asked our volunteers for some feedback and this is what they said …”taking someone out is not difficult and is easy to do…”, “…. it’s really flexible and I can work it around my own personal life really easily. It’s a nice way for me to feel like I’ve given something back to the community and having fun while I do it. “

Our Side By Side Service

We cannot begin to express the importance and impact that our volunteers have on the lives of people with dementia.

The Proof is in the Pudding

O

ur Side By Side service helps people with dementia access activities which they have always loved to do with the help of a volunteer. For a number of months our volunteers having been taking people with dementia out and about, with activities ranging from cups of tea (many cups of tea and a lot of cake!) to fish and chips in Whitby. From bicycle rides along the beach front to swimming to shopping in Leeds and Beverley races. One of our service users had abandoned all the activities she

had enjoyed doing prior to being diagnosed with dementia. Her Side By Side volunteer regularly talks to her and her family about her previous activities and particularly the enjoyment she had derived from very regularly swimming. On a recent outing, she wanted to look inside a recently opened Leisure Centre and after having a coffee, she looked at the facilities and decided she would like to try to the pool. The following week when our volunteer called for her, she was waiting with her swimming kit and was raring to go. She completed 20 lengths of the pool without looking like she had made any effort at all, and there is

We would love to support even more people to do the things they love but we need many more volunteers to do so. By donating a few hours to fit in with your own and the service users’ schedules, and by doing something that you love, you will be ensuring that people living with Dementia continue to gain as much pleasure from their lives as possible. So, if you enjoy rambling, cycling, swimming or simply watching sport, visiting galleries and museums or supporting people to do the things they love then we have a volunteering role for you. Full training and support is given and all expenses are reimbursed. It could take as little as an hour a month and fits in around you!

If you think this might be for you, contact either Bernie or Colleen in our Scarborough office. T: 01723 500958 E: sidebysidenorthyorkshire@alzheimers.org.uk 20 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

KEEP JESUS UNWRAPPED IN 2017 By Rev Tanya Short, Methodist Minister For Malton, Norton, Leavening, Scagglethorpe and Hovingham At the end of November there were news reports on ‘Black Friday’ emblazoned across our television screens. Black Friday is that day which has appeared in this country from America where shops give huge discounts on many items in their stores. I have to say I was, as I imagine many of you were too, shocked at the behaviour of so many people, both in this country and the USA. People injured in the crush of the crowds, fighting with each other over televisions and other items, brawling in car parks, the police having to be called in to intervene. People were in some instances, trying to buy Christmas presents at a reduced rate. Gifts to be given to family and friends in love - but at what cost! Consumerism at its worst! Watching these reports and the cost involved to so many lives made me wonder what has happened to those gifts now that Christmas is over. Have they been discarded, left behind for something better, something more interesting? And I also wonder where in many homes is Jesus, now all the festivities are over? Discarded by many people and put back in the loft with the Christmas trees, wrapped up with the decorations and nativity scenes, locked away until next Christmas? It seems to me that as we move forward into this New Year we need to keep the love of Jesus unwrapped and alive in all that we do within the life of our church, as once again together we embark on the redevelopment of this building. There will undoubtedly be a cost involved as decisions are made where we may have to let go of some of our personal feelings but let us keep focussed on our goal and be open to the guiding of the Spirit as we consider our future mission and ministry within this community. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and contented New Year and look forward as we continue to work together as the body of Christ. Every blessing, Tanya 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The YAA are proud to operate as a professional, independent charity providing a life-saving service to 5 million people across Yorkshire. We would like to reinforce to our generous supporters that we do not engage in the following practices;

DOOR KNOCKING

Official YAA staff/volunteers would never approach you at your door – this is against the YAA Fundraising policy

DOOR TO DOOR RECYCLING

Working with our recycling partners BIU Group – we have over 250 clothing banks all over Yorkshire where you can drop your unwanted textiles without any hassle. We would never push recycling bags through your door.

COLD CALLING

It is against the YAA Fundraising policy for any members of our

team to cold call our supporters. We would always advise that you check which Air Ambulance has called you should you ever receive such a phone call.

CHUGGING

Chugging is now a common term used for charity collectors who approach shoppers to sign up for donations or join a fundraising scheme. The YAA do not operate this type of fundraising.

We would always suggest that you make sure you know exactly which charity or air ambulance you are donating to. Always check for the YAA logo and official YAA literature. Make sure the person you are speaking to is wearing the YAA uniform and is carrying YAA photo ID. Our friendly teams are here to raise awareness of the work we do and work with you to support your fundraising events – we’re here to help, not hassle!

MAILSHOTTING

The YAA does not send out blanket mailings of any kind. We never send letters asking for donations, nor do we share our donor data with other organisations or use databases supplied by third parties for any of our fundraising activities.

Recognising YAA official staff and volunteers Official staff and representatives of the YAA should: • Always be carrying an official YAA ID badge • Also staff will usually be wearing branded YAA clothing. 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

OUR ADVICE;

Registered volunteers should also have: • Official ID badges • YAA branded clothing with the words ‘Registered Volunteer’ If in doubt they can be verified by calling YAA HQ on 01422 237900 Visit www.yaa.org.uk Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 10th January

STATION HOUSE VETS A CAT FRIENDLY CLINIC Station House Vets are delighted to announce that we are now an accredited ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic, achieving the silver award. So what is a Cat friendly Clinic? The International Society of Feline Medicine (ISFM) is the veterinary division of International Cat Care (www.icatcare.org), it’s a charity that is dedicated to improving the health and welfare of cat’s worldwide. The organisation recognises that because of their unique nature and needs, taking a cat to a veterinary clinic can be very stressful, both for the cat and also the owner. The Cat Friendly Clinic programme is designed to help address these issues and create more cat friendly veterinary clinics, so reducing the stress for the cat, and making veterinary visits easier for cat owners as well. The ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic Scheme means accredited clinics have reached higher standards of cat care in that they: • Understand the needs of cats and have make visits to the vets more cat-friendly • Understand how to approach and handle cats gently and with care • Have good knowledge and equipment to manage the care of cats The Cat Friendly clinic accreditation is at three levels- Bronze, Silver and Gold. These recognise that vet clinics can vary widely in the size, location, structure, staffing and equipment. Achieving the silver standard has involved all staff, from receptionists, nurses through to vets. We have two ‘Cat Advocate’s’ who ensure that the cat friendly standards are maintained, and are happy to talk to you about any questions you may have. So what does it mean for you cat and you? An ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic gives you peace of mind and reassurance, knowing that: • Our clinic has achieved a sliver accreditation standard • Our clinic staff have thought about the specific needs of cats and act on accordingly. • We will be happy to talk with you, show you around the clinic and discuss any concerns you may have.

Staff at Station house vets handle cats and treat cats with understanding, gentleness and respect, and make every effort to make the visit to the clinic as stress-free for you and your cat as possible. If you have any questions or concerns about bringing your cat to us, or even about the Cat Friendly Clinic please don’t hesitate to email us on: nurses@stationhousevets.co.uk or likewise you can visit the Cat Friendly Clinic website which contains all the information about the ISFM Cat Friendly Clinic: www. catfriendlyclinic.org Ellie Kift (Student Veterinary Nurse) Station House Vets

DOGS OF THE MONTH: OZZIE Ozzie is a very handsome 2 year old Kelpie. He is a very energetic dog who needs an experienced owner with the time and patience to help him reach his full potential. He is very quick to learn, but can be known to panic in certain situations so we are looking for a calm, kind home where he can gain confidence. Ozzie is great with other dogs and soon becomes confident around new people once he gets to know you, so if you think you could offer Ozzie the home he needs please call us on 07581 324153. Fur Baby make-overs

Holly previously worked as a flight attendant. “After travelling the globe for 12 years,” she says, “I decided it was time to retrain and dog grooming was the obvious choice as I love dogs. I wanted to use my empathetic nature, creativity and love of people. I’ve gone from the fashion industry to fashioning dogs and I absolutely love it!” After obtaining her City & Guilds award and canine first aid certificate, Holly set up Fur Baby Dog Grooming in May 2016. She grooms dogs of all shapes and sizes at her salon on Broughton

Rise in Malton, which has plenty of off street parking. Holly says “The most important part of grooming is really listening to owners, understanding what they want and treating all clients with respect. I also listen to the dogs. It’s so important that the dog is spoken to throughout the groom (In my salon I sing to them!). This makes the dogs feel at ease and cared for.” A full groom includes a shampoo and condition, blow dry, body clip and scissoring, nail clipping and a squirt of doggie cologne to leave your Fur Baby smelling fresh and divine. Shhh! It’s a secret!

Ryedale Foot Care

During 2015 I badly tore the calf muscle in my left leg and at the time I had no hesitation in telling people about the discomfort and pain I was experiencing. If anyone needed convincing of how my injury was impacting my life then my limp and pained expression provided them with ample evidence. People reacted with sympathy and understanding. Not once did I experience someone dismissing my injury as unimportant or imagined. However, had I shared that I was suffering from a mental illness such as anxiety and depression then research shows that the reaction from others would have been very different.

Callus/Hard Skin Removal · Nail Trimming · Corn Removal · Infections Treated · Verruca Treatment · Ingrown Toe Nails · Diabetic Foot Care

by Jeff Bentley of TLC Counselling

Many people, after sharing their pain of suffering from a mental illness, have experienced being told that they are ‘merely over-thinking things’ or ‘you’re just being paranoid, chill’ or ‘you have a loving family, friends and a good job so what is there to worry about?’ and ‘just pull yourself together!’. Such responses produce an understandable reluctance in us to openly admit to such suffering. We therefore keep it a closely guarded secret to avoid what can be a shaming and wounding experience. Yet evidence provided by the Mental Health Foundation tells us that one in four people in the UK will experience a mental health problem in any given year. This is also echoed in a recent survey of university students by YouGov. Their survey found that one in four students admitted to suffering from mental health issues with depression and anxiety topping the list. Many of the students reported being concerned over the stigma they would have to contend with if they were to speak out. So they suffer in silence, experiencing sleepless nights alone with their thoughts. Why do they feel so ashamed of their illness? It is not their fault, but many are often made to feel guilty or melodramatic about how they are feeling. It is as if suffering from depression or anxiety had been something they chose. What needs to be understood and openly talked about is that mental illnesses are present in many people’s lives; they are very real conditions and deserve to be treated as serious. My hope and fervent wish is that through events such as World Mental Health Day and increasing coverage of mental health issues in the national media, our awareness, attitude and reactions to someone suffering from a mental illness will change so that no one has to suffer in silence and live with a lonely secret.

Top Tips from a dental professional

NEW YEAR NEW YOU

I

n the New Year we make lots of resolutions and are by Christine Parker generally inclined to try BDS (GDC 72136) to improve our health and fitness, however very few of us extend that attitude to our mouths. Some very small changes can have a big impact on your oral health and your smile. If you are prone to decay think about how often you are having something to eat or drink in the day, sugar in drinks is a major cause of tooth decay, even low sugar, reduced sugar or sugar free can cause problems as they either still contain some sugar or can be acidic to drink. Every time you take a sip it will attack your teeth for about 90 minutes! If you have tea or coffee without sugar and use a sweetener instead you will reduce your waistline and your rate of decay. Another excellent easy way to reduce your decay is to brush twice a day and not to rinse after so the fluoride toothpaste continues to protect your teeth. If you are prone to gum problems it is essential to speak to your dentist so they can work out a personalised programme of treatment for you. However in the meantime at home you can invest in an electric brush, preferably with a round head and also use interdental brushes to clean the gaps between your teeth. Whilst there is no substitute for professional oral care you can certainly improve your oral health by using the above. For personalised dental advice without the jargon speak to Jan at Howardian Dental Practice, we’ll help you get a healthy mouth and then keep it that way.

9 JANUARY Helmsley Decorative and Fine Arts Society - ‘Poet in Paint: The Art and Life of Paul Nash (1889-1946)’ Lecturer - David Haycock

Paul Nash was one of the most important British artists of the eye twentieth century, and one who united the pastoral and mystical tradition embodied by English artists such as William Blake and Samuel Palmer, with the modern European movements of Futurism, Surrealism and Abstraction. Based on the lecturer’s books Paul Nash (2002) and A Crisis of Brilliance (2009), this lecture explores Nash’s life, from his discovery of the English landscape as a young boy, through his artistic education at the Slade, to his experiences as an official war artist in both World Wars.

Join anthropologist Dr Rose Drew as she recounts tales of women who passed as boys in earlier centuries in order to go to war. These females fought alongside other (usually unsuspecting) male soldiers. But what would make a woman join a war?

27 JANUARY ‘Til the Boys Come Home with Jessa Liversidge

Join Jessa Liversidge and her accompanist Malcolm Maddock for an evening of nostalgia, emotion, and a little humour as we pay tribute to the women of WWI and WWII. A treasure trove of moving and uplifting songs will be intertwined with poems, diaries and letters written by some of the unsung wartime heroes – the women.

They often had the same reasons as boys and men who run off to become soldiers, with the added bonus of missing out on the dangerous or just plain regimented lives of women in the past. Rose Drew, PhD is a physical anthropologist with a focus on human skeletal material, and has been a ‘dirt’ archaeologist since 1995. She’s made several TV appearances and is most pleased with solving the Cause of Death of Joseph Merrick, aka The Elephant Man.

Clayton is a very sweet natured cat who would make a great family pet. He is the first to greet you on a morning when we arrive for work. Clayton will need to be a complete house cat and be the only cat. He will be suitable to live with junior school age children and over, he really is a lovely lad who deserves to be part of a loving new home. Nigel came to us after finding himself on the streets fending for himself; life has been tough for this gorgeous lad which has left him rather afraid of people. He really does want to be friends and just needs a nice quiet home where he can settle and learn what a loving home is. We would love for Nigel to find an adult only home to help him grow in confidence and offer him the love and stability he deserves.

THANK YOU!

We’ve been able to find loving homes for hundreds of animals this year, and none of this would have been possible without the dedicated support of all of our supporters and volunteers - so we’d just like to say a big thank you, and wish you all a happy and successful 2017! www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 53

A Cheerless Day In January By The Pastoral Poet Late the blind of night was raised. Light averse to hailing the dawn. Translucent panes are over glazed: Blurred by the dank and drizzly morn. Oozing over far eastern hills, Sparingly, the thin light spills, Harried by the hounds of gloom. High above, a sobbing cloud weeps, Falling tears rinse the weathered leaves. A watery sun merely peeps, Uncaring as the sad day grieves. Lucid thoughts are somewhat hidden, Lost within the foetid midden Of mediocrity. Absent, the bugle’s rousing piece. Frostbitten, the withered flower. The all too punctual timepiece, Seems reluctant to meet the hour. The blindfolded sun, on this day, Is beamless on the savage way, Where crows pick the broken road kill.

SUPERNATURE-AL BY MARY MAHON As 2017 dawns, it promises so many new things. For me, it delivers Hollywood’s highlyanticipated blockbusters! The vast spectrum of genres provides pleasure for everybody, tempting us with an escape from the real world, offering us new-fangled worlds to explore and electrifying adventures to embark on. For those that feast on fear-inducing horrors, they might be more realistic than you think… Zombies! Dominating the horror industry, the mindless creatures range from simply limping along senselessly and easy prey to slay, to sprinting savages withstanding mass mutilation. Whatever the case, we can all rest easy knowing they’re fictional. However, ‘Ophiocordyceps unilateralis’ is a fungus that brings this nightmare to life! Found in tropical rainforests, this ‘mind-controlling zombie fungus’ enslaves ants by infecting their brains and controlling them until the parasite erupts free, firing spores to infect the rest of the colony. The iconic legend ‘Frankenstein’ has influenced many films, where ‘mutants’ are spliced together by mad scientists and subsequently wreak havoc. In reality, scientists have genetically modified a range of creatures, but they’re much tamer than the films depict! ‘Frankenswine’ is an ‘enviropig’, integrating DNA from pigs, mice and E. Coli to reduce the high levels of phosphorus that normal pigs ingest. Also, we have hybrids such as glow-in-the-dark cats, rabbits and pigs as well as goats modified with spider genes to produce web silk! Cyborgs: sometimes good, sometimes bad, but never simply ordinary. Many people benefit from artificial aids such as pacemakers implanted into the chest to help stabilise abnormal heart rhythms. Last year we witnessed the world’s first bionic eye implant, and now prosthetic arms are able to be connected to nerves so it can be controlled by the brain! These fictional fantasies are all around us without us realising. Often the wonders of our world go unnoticed. Perhaps this New year we could try to look at around us more and less at a screen.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

SHORT STORY

THE SCIENCE OF SNOW SHOVELLING by Jackie Brewster

Maurice laced his boots up eagerly, pleased with himself for remembering to get the snow shovel out of the shed last night. Thanks to a thick blanket of snow, this Sunday morning was the perfect opportunity to win back the favour of Mrs Harby, his comely neighbour. What woman could resist a man with a shovel? And when it came to snow and the shovelling of it, Maurice considered himself quite the expert. He opened his front door and was met with an unwelcome sight. Mrs Harby’s teenage grandson, Dale, was already pacing her drive wielding a shovel of his own. Maurice’s last encounter with Dale had ended with a line full of Mrs Harby’s sheets going up in flames. The boy was a menace, and, by the looks of things thought Maurice, his snow shovelling technique was a disgrace. Rather than methodically working down the driveway, Dale was randomly throwing snow everywhere. “Can I give you some advice young man?” Maurice called over. “You’re going about that all wrong.” “Nah, I’m alright,” Dale called back.

“I didn’t ask.” Dale kicked a pile of snow. “I’d better lend a hand.” Maurice strode purposefully across with his shovel. It was time to impress the lady by taking control of the situation. “You know what would get this done quicker?” Dale said, stumbling into a snow drift. “Chucking down some hot water.” “That’s where you’re wrong,” Maurice said. “The only way to clear this drive is with hard work. Hot water will do more harm than good.” “Yeah, right,” Dale said sarcastically, throwing down his shovel. “I’m off to get some.” Good lord, Maurice thought, don’t they teach them anything at school these days? At least with the boy gone for a few minutes he could get on with the job properly.

“How lovely,” she said. This is wonderful Maurice thought, not only will she be pleased with me for clearing her drive, she’ll be impressed by how I’m educating her grandson. “Go ahead lad,” he said indulgently. “Whenever you’re ready.”

“Out the way,” he said, “I’m going to pour this.” “Don’t,” Maurice said. “It’ll just make matters worse.”

Maurice’s face drained of all colour.

“Course it won’t,” Dale said.

“Oh mate!” Dale laughed. “You were totally right.”

Dale returned with a freshly boiled kettle.

“Just to prove it, do a patch test,” Maurice said. “Pour a small amount somewhere that your grandmother won’t tread and see what happens.”

“Yeah,” Dale said, hacking at the ground. “She’s going out for Sunday lunch.”

“Good plan,” Dale said. “But if it works we’ll pour it everywhere.”

68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

“Morning!” Maurice gave a dignified bow. “We’re conducting an experiment.”

Dale stood next to his grandmother’s car with the kettle held high, a cloud of steam coming out of the spout. Then, before Maurice could stop him, Dale poured the scalding water all over the windscreen. There was a sickening crack as the glass shattered into a thousand irreparable fragments.

“You’re just making more work,” Maurice said. “I’m sure your grandmother would like to get her car off the drive at some point.”

“Anywhere nice?” Maurice liked to keep abreast of all Mrs Harby’s comings and goings.

opened the front door, elegantly dressed for her lunch date.

If it works I’ll eat my shovel Maurice thought. “Somewhere she definitely won’t tread?” Dale said. Mrs Harby

Mrs Harby scowled and stormed back inside the house, slamming the front door behind her. Maurice’s next challenge to impress Mrs Harby was how to get a windscreen replaced on a snowy Sunday morning. And the less Dale was involved in that the better.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

FIGHTING THE FROSTS by Pippa Greenwood With frost, rain and perhaps even some snow, at this time of year our gardens can be in for quite a battering. Although most of your garden plants are probably fairly frost resistant, what can you do to minimise the damage to those which are not so hardy? It’s time to get outside and take some precautions. Plants in containers are particularly vulnerable to freezing or frosting, and thin-walled containers pose the greatest threat. Where possible, plunge your pots by digging a hole in the soil and placing the plant in its pot into the hole. If it is too heavy to move then wrap it well in several layers of bubble wrap, polythene or old curtains, using lengths of hessian to create a more appealing outermost layer if the container is in a very prominent position. If very harsh weather is forecast or a spell of mild weather has promoted some soft, new growth, drape a double layer of horticultural fleece over the top growth of the plants and anchor it well. Alternatively, consider Easy Fleece Jackets: they come in three sizes and have a draw-string and toggle so that you can easily insert the plant and then secure it – find out more on my website www.

pippagreenwood.com/products/ protect-your-crops. A double fleece layer can be used on plants in beds and borders too, or to protect slightly tender wall shrubs. Much larger plants can be protected with a home-made ‘cage’ – wrap a framework of four stakes or sturdy canes with netting or chicken wire, then fill the central space around the plant with dry bracken, straw or leaves. Evergreens in containers and in open ground may suffer from drought as well as foliage or stem growth, so continue to water these, especially if they are in a sheltered spot or the weather has been dry. A deep mulch applied to the soil or compost surface before the ground freezes will help to keep water available. Although most fruit trees - like apples and pears, cherries and plums - are hardy, they are also prone to damage. The main risk is to newly opened blossom, though the buds themselves may be damaged too, with late frosts being the most harmful. If you are planting new fruit plants, it really pays to buy from a specialist nursery and to get late-flowering varieties, as they are less likely to be flowering when there is still a risk of frost. Finally, use fleece to cover any seeds already sown out of doors. A double layer of well-anchored

70 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

fleece or a fleece-covered pull-out EasyTunnel is quick and easy to install, and will help to provide protection and that bit of extra warmth for germinating seeds and seedlings. If you are planning on sowing any early varieties of crops such as broad beans or lettuce, then I’d also suggest that you cover the soil before you sow. A layer of well-anchored polythene will keep off excess rain and allow a little warmth to build up, so when you sow the seeds they won’t suffer from excess sogginess and won’t get such a cold shock. Visit Pippa’s website www. pippagreenwood.com and book Pippa for a gardening talk or peruse the really useful selection of Pippa’s favourite gardening items, including popup crop covers, SpeedHoes, SpeedWeeders, raised bed kits, fleece jackets for plants, pullout EasyTunnels, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Voucher cards, signed books and lots more besides.

FIRST DRIVE

By James Baggott

Ferrari California T Handling Speciale VALUE FOR MONEY The California T Handling Speciale costs £155,244 – pitching it against the Audi R8 Spyder and Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet. But options increase that base price; our test car had 29 added extras totalling £59,767, pushing the price up to a staggering £215,011.

Meet the California T HS – the tweaked version of the manufacturer’s folding hard-top family Ferrari. With two seats in the back for small children and a V8 turbo-charged engine, this is the convertible Italian supercar for those with more than one significant other. New for the Handling Speciale model are some stiffer springs, louder exhaust and some ever-so-subtle design tweaks – for which you’ll be charged £5,568 to add to an ever-expanding list of options. LOOKS AND IMAGE The California is aimed at a certain type of buyer - this is a GT car designed for comfort, looks and kerb appeal above driving entertainment, unlike its thoroughbred 488 stablemate. Even with the louder exhaust system on this HS model, on the road we found it just a little too quiet. In fact, we found the California lacked a lot of the excitement you’d expect to find in a Ferrari, though it was certainly comfortable over distance. The quality of its build is without question too – perfectly demonstrated with a wonderfully dramatic roof mechanism. 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

SPACE AND PRACTICALITY This is a sports car with sports car compromises – with the front seats back there is very little or no rear legroom and the boot is cramped too. If you don’t want to use the roof, you get a little more space, but if you do then you’ll be restricted to two small bags. BEHIND THE WHEEL For long distance motorway journeys, the California T HS is a comfortable companion. The 552bhp turbo-charged V8 has impressive breadth to its power delivery and can hit 60mph in just 3.6 seconds. Sadly, although the turbo engine offers improved performance, it lacks some of the aural pleasure you expect from a Ferrari. Those stiffer springs and louder exhaust come into play when you select the ‘Sport’ setting, and hit the bumpy road button on the steering wheel too and you’ll be rewarded with a compliant ride that’s just about perfect for rutted roads. A parking camera makes reversing straightforward and the visibility isn’t too bad either.

One well worth adding, though, is Apple CarPlay (£2,400) which makes the infotainment system far more usable. Ferrari’s standard system isn’t a match for the likes of Audi or Porsche, so the addition of Apple’s integrated software is well worth selecting. Who would buy one? California buyers are family men or women who need the occasional flexibility of carrying more than one passenger. It might mean compromising on space for everyone, but at least the option is there. VERDICT It’s hard not to be a little disappointed by the California, though what that’s down to is difficult to pinpoint. The turbocharged engine isn’t as evocative as it could be and it’s not as emotive to drive either – more functional long-distance GT than out and out sports car. However, for families that need flexible space, want convertible style but with the added refinement of a folding hard top, and for whom anything less than a Ferrari badge simply won’t do, the California will hit the spot and, the Handling Speciale pack does look like a bargain when compared to the other options on the list.
