elcome to our January edition… You will be receiving this edition whilst (hopefully) chilling out after Christmas and before starting on New Year celebrations. This calm interval period is a special time for me as it’s also my birthday! If you have a birthday around Christmas you will understand the challenges – everyone forgets and nobody is available for celebrating! When I was little my parents always made sure that my birthday was special and separate from Christmas. We often went to a pantomime and I remember various panto dames and villains throwing cards and sweets to me in the audience. There were a few years when I celebrated in June instead so that I could actually have a party with friends. These days, I usually like to spend it zonked on the settee with family, in front of the fire, watching films whilst being supplied with chocolates and whatever yummy festive food is left over. If your special day is at Christmas (and just in case people forget) I’d like to wish you a very Happy Birthday!! As we head towards New Year, it is always a great time to think about making big life changes. Maybe your aim is to get healthy and fit in which case we have a range of businesses who can help right here in the Handy Mag. Give them a call and you can look forward to a fitter, leaner, healthier you come spring. At the Handy Mag we have spent many months (read that as years!) developing a new website. Not really being website designers ourselves it was a challenging start but, although we do say so ourselves, we love the new design. We really wanted our new site to bring in all the elements of

CHARLIE’S COLUMN Why I Love Going To Beyond Boundaries

W

hen you suffer from Arthritis, Epilepsy and a heart condition, It’s hard to find a regular place to go that helps you forget all that. Beyond Boundaries is the answer. Set in the beautiful North York Moors Beyond Boundaries is a farm in Commondale that is aimed at people like myself that need extra help. Run by Kay Willis and Anthony Laffan since June 2016, Beyond Boundaries is open and accessible to all ages and needs. It is a truly great project that is well loved by everyone who visits. On my first visit back in May 2017, I was given a tour by Anthony around the different areas of the farm. There’s a workshop for arts, crafts and some intensive DIY for the constant ongoing projects (they literally never stop!). Then there’s the ‘bait’ room: a space for painting and storing the local archaeological discoveries found by resident metal detector Ashley, one of 28 weekly visitors who greatly benefit from their time at the farm. A large barn houses the cows and lambs. Other animal activities on offer include looking after and feeding the chickens, sheep, cows, goats and rabbits (who are always happy when food is involved!). Attached to the farm is a massive space of 94 acres or so. This space is used for team building exercises and activities; things that are important to the experience. One memorable morning I was part of a large group of visitors trying to send a tennis ball down into a bowl in the woods with nothing but string and guttering. After plenty of near misses and laughter, we did it. This sums up Beyond Boundaries in a nutshell: inclusion and enjoyment. by Charlie Ridgewell “Certainly, the best thing I’ve found at Beyond Boundaries is the feeling of family. There’s never a dull moment, every lunchtime the main cottage is filled with warmth and laughter. It’s a place that can provide a (much needed) boost, especially if I’ve had a tough week being bed-bound. It’s somewhere where everyone gets to feel included and independent whilst making lasting happy memories.” Kay Wallis

alton and Norton Musical Theatre (M.N.M.T) are well underway with rehearsals of their latest pantomime. Directed once again by Mark Boler and Rory Queen, the society promises another exciting family Panto at The Milton Rooms. Rory is once again to cause mayhem as Dame Edna with his sidekick Chuckles played by Rebecca Heslop. In the title role of Snow White the society are delighted to welcome back Abigail Rennison and making their debuts with the society Millie Kemp as Prince Ferdinand and as evil Queen Avarice, Katherine Woodford join the cast. Additionally Micky Moran has his work cut out performing two roles as Slurp and Merlin the Magic Mirror. Thomas Jennings returns once again this time as bumbling Court Magistrate Quill, supported by Jess Schofield and Kyle Cass sharing the role of his scribe Scribbles. Finally this year the society had two exceptional auditions for the part of Fairy Fortune they could not choose between Claire Smith and Jaqueline Routledge so they cast both of them to form a Fairy double act.

IT’S A NEW YEAR by Revd Rachel Hirst,

Vicar at St Peter’s Church, Norton

I

wonder what you’re looking forward to this year? There’s something about moving from December and the residue of Christmas into January that makes us think about change. Losing weight, giving up alcohol or meat, getting exercise – all things which are designed to improve ourselves and our health. Maybe you have good things planned for this year, a holiday, a new job or promotion, maybe a new baby in the family. We can stand at the beginning of the month and look ahead to 365 days of potential. No one knows what will actually happen, but we often start the year determined to make the most of those days and of ourselves.

Leaving a relationship is the hardest thing you may ever do. We are here to help.

Holy Moly and the Crackers

It’s a good attitude to have. Often when something bad happens people say ‘you never know what’s round the corner’ and it’s true. Anything can happen – good or bad. We can let that thought depress us or spur us on. Perhaps, instead of the usual resolutions, which, if you’re anything like me, are often abandoned by February, why not decide this year to make the most of time. See each day as a gift. Appreciate the sights and sounds around you, the people you are with, even the tasks you are doing. Christians sometimes use a phrase from the Psalms ‘Be still and know that I am God.’ It helps us to pause and reflect on the bigger picture and to remember God is with us. But all of us, of any faith or none, could start this year by being still and trying to do that as often as we can – make the most of this new year and its potential. Appreciating the gift of each day as it comes and enjoying the gift of time as much as we can.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO GET A DIVORCE?

S

etting out the cost of the divorce procedure is a fairly straight forward issue but it is the additional issues alongside the actual divorce process such as resolving the financial matters and on occasion the arrangements for the children which can take a case from being relatively straight forward and in the normal costs parameters to a costly affair. Whenever any separating party wishes to file a Petition with the Court this attracts a Court fee which currently stands at £550.00. There are circumstances where some individuals on lower incomes may be eligible for a fee remission/reduction. Initially most Solicitors now charge a “fixed fee” for the work undertaken in the divorce procedure so long as it is of a standard nature. Our fee at present is £650.00 plus VAT. The fee is less if you are the Respondent in the Petition. The other issues surrounding a marital breakdown such as what will be done with the matrimonial assets and what the arrangements will be for the children can be resolved in a number of ways and depending on how those matters are resolved will dictate the length of the process and the cost of the

process. The separating parties may be on extremely good terms and reach an agreement. In those circumstances the costs of formalising those arrangements can be minimal. It may be that Greg Cross, Associate Solicitor, Solicitor involvement Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors Family is required to assist in Law Team, Malton 01653 600070 the negotiations either through correspondence or through engaging in a process known as collaborative law where the parties and respective Solicitors agree not to go down the Court route and work as a team to assist the parties moving forward. There may be a preference to engage in Mediation to assist in resolving the issues and as a last resort, should all else fail, there is the Court process to resolve those issues. Placing a figure on that side of the divorce is extremely difficult as each and every case is different and arguing every issue will mean the costs will increase.

Spotlight On... O

Lauren Hood

ur spotlight this month is on West End star and local girl Lauren Hood.

As a Norton girl, Lauren trained at Kirkham Henry Performing Arts Centre in Malton and was a member of Malton & Norton Musical Theatre, Ryedale Youth Theatre and York Light Opera. She was given a scholarship to attend Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts where she graduated with a First Class degree and was presented with the Gyearbour Astante Award for Acting on graduation. Lauren says “My training at Kirkham Henry filled me with all the skills, ambition and discipline in my career as an Actress. My time there was filled with love, laughter and hard work.” Lauren made her professional debut playing the role of Carrie Pipperidge in the West End Production of Carousel alongside Lesley Garrett, for which she received a TMA award nomination. From there Lauren’s theatre credits include Laura in Dreamboats & Petticoats UK Tour, Martha in The Secret Garden which was in the UK and then transferred to Toronto, Canada. Lauren then came back closer to home to play the title role in The Rise & Fall of Little Voice at the Hull Truck Theatre where she was then asked to return at Christmas to play naughty Gabriel in Tim Firth’s play The Flint

Street Nativity. Lauren grew up watching Grease as a child and was thrilled then to be offered the role of Frenchy (the fun, pink haired pink lady!) with the added extra of understudying Sandy, in which she got to play but admits that being a Pink Lady was much more fun! Lauren then went straight into play one of her most favourite roles of Penny Pingleton in the national tour of Hairspray. As an actor Lauren dreamt of originating a role and was lucky enough to be given the opportunity by writer and director Terry Johnson in the West End production of Mrs Henderson Presents, this is her most challenging role as it involved being completely nude on stage.... Quite a lot! It was the true story of The Windmill Girls during WWII in London the experience was exhilarating and terrifying all at the same time! Earlier this year she played Gertie Cummings in Oklahoma for Grange Park Opera with the incredible BBC London Concert Orchestra with over 35 musicians. Most recently Lauren played the lead role of Cathy in The Last Five Years at the Welsh Millennium Centre. Lauren’s most proudest credit is that she was luckiest enough to work with the late and wonderful Victoria Wood playing the role of Betty in Victoria Wood’s Midlife Christmas. Filming with Victoria is something Lauren will never forget. Not bad for a local Yorkshire lass! If you know someone who deserves to be in the Handy Mag ‘Spotlight’ please let us know.

NEW PRIVATE STUDIO FOR PANTHER FITNESS

“No pain no gain.” “Go hard or go home.” “Just a short 5km run.” We all know that it is important to stay healthy but is all this really necessary? Panther Fitness can show you another way with their new studio in Hutton le Hole. An inviting and comfortable space with new equipment and one-on-one training available, the studio is aimed at helping ordinary people keep healthy and stay fit. Whether you are recovering from a hip operation, caesarean section, or are overweight and looking for a way to feel and be healthier, this could be the solution for you. Toni Lamb, owner of the business, says that she doesn’t simply “focus on being ‘toned and lean’ but on people wanting to make a change”. Specialising in fitness, health and mobility for older adults; pre and postnatal; those with disabilities (mental and physical) and young adults and children, Toni provides fun, affordable and effective personal fitness instruction for all. Her new studio has wheelchair access and she is DBS and CIMSPA registered and fully insured. Toni has a Level 3 Personal Training qualification and not only trains her clients, she also trains other trainers. This means you can be confident in her knowledge and ability to help you in your journey. Toni says “Everybody has the potential to be a fitter, stronger and healthier version of themselves and I am

keen to unlock that potential. Your lifestyle commitments, current energy levels and work life balance are all taken into account when designing your perfect workout to achieve your goals. Sessions are fun, a little wacky, but don’t be fooled! I am a hard task master and I want my participants to give 100%.

So what is special about Panther Fitness? • Classes are kept small so that everyone receives the time and attention they need. • Personal training is available at competitive pricing. • The focus is very definitely on individuals. • Walking bootcamps are available outdoors on the beautiful North York Moors. • Lifestyle tips alongside exercise ensures you can make the most out of your training. In fact most clients will do no actual training until their third visit! • The first consultation is completely free. • Private buggycise classes are available on request. Toni’s future plan is to expand her training to a wider audience with online videos, assessments and consultations - so no need to travel! So if you think you could benefit from some personal training or maybe just some advice on how you can get into better shape why not give Toni a call on 01751 630273 or have a look at her website for more details.

MARIE CURIE NEEDS YOU

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

arie Curie’s Malton and Norton Fundraising Group is looking to recruit new members. The group, which consists of three members, has ambitious plans to raise money and increase awareness of Marie Curie in the local community and is keen to reach out to more people with a range of different skills to help support the charity. The team manages the Great Daffodil Appeal in March and now wants extra hands to forge new events in the community. The Great Daffodil Appeal officially launches in January and the charity is calling on people to sign up to help with supermarket and street collections. By volunteering for two hours at a location near you and encouraging your community to donate and wear a daffodil, you will be helping to ensure nurses can care for more people with a terminal illness. You sign up for Great Daffodil Appeal collections by visiting www.mariecurie.org.uk/ daffodil. Each daffodil sold will bring care and support to people going through one of the toughest times any of us will face. And the more daffodils worn with pride, the more families Marie Curie can help: • £10 pays for expert Marie Curie Support Line staff to answer someone’s call – giving practical information about living with a terminal illness or simply offering a sympathetic ear. • £20 pays for an hour of hands-on care from a Marie Curie Nurse • £70 pays for a day therapy session at one of our hospices, helping people living with a terminal illness manage their symptoms, regain control and live as well as possible. • £180 pays for a nurse to be in someone’s home through the night, for a full nine hours, bringing the comfort and expertise families need when a loved one is dying. • £400 pays for 24 hours of care in one of our hospices, so someone can get the round-theclock support they deserve in their final days. • £5,500 pays for more than 2,000 Marie Curie Nurses to care for people with terminal illnesses all across the UK for a whole hour. • £19,000 pays for an entire year of expert care from a Marie Curie Nurse for people at the end of their lives. If you feel you may be able to help, please contact Emma Williams on 01904 755260 / 07547 978969 or email emma.williams@mariecurie.org.uk.

C

hristmas and New Year is the Party Season and we can all be forgiven for a few bad habits creeping in but come January we need to get back into gear and choose the healthy options, with the odd treat! by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

Eaten too many goodies and broken a tooth? The good news is most chips and cracks can be simply repaired if attended to when they first occur. Leave them too long and you’re more likely to have pain, need a root canal or an extraction so don’t put off repairs.

Improve your overall health by improving your oral health, we can rate your gum health and risk of tooth decay and show you how to make small changes to make a big impact. Our regular patients are always commenting on how their mouths have never felt so clean or healthy. Wood Reclamation Workshop

CAN YOU HELP YOUR LOCAL LIBRARY? Norton Hive are looking for volunteers

N

orton Hive Library and Community Hub would like to wish everyone a Happy and Successful 2019! The trustees and volunteers at the library are looking forward to a successful 2019 where they hope to be able to offer more events for the community, especially more craft activities. This community library, run by volunteers since 2016, has come a long way during the last two years. The dedicated team do a fantastic job of running the library. Not only do they find volunteering interesting and rewarding, it has also become a place to make new friends, be part of a vibrant group and generally enjoy a sense of wellbeing. And there is a lot more to running a library than just shelving books! Duties include: stock rotation; assisting customers with their enquiries; helping with IT queries etc. Training is available to help support the volunteers. Alongside these essential roles are a variety of activities for the local community to join in with, these include Knit and Natter, Sing Live at the Hive, Story reading for children and craft activities.

Imagine‌ a big shed where people can take all their unwanted wood. That could be furniture, planks, pallets, pieces of tree, waste wood from builders, even fruit boxes. The workshop would have a small team of volunteer woodworkers who could take things apart and clean, sort and stack the pieces ready for re-use. If furniture items were in fairly good condition, they could be refurbished and sold very cheaply to people who need a helping hand. Youngsters could come on Saturday mornings and learn woodcraft. Retired carpenters could come and share their knowledge and expertise. There would always be a supply of kindling available for local people – donations accepted. Sawdust for pet cages. Wood chips for garden paths. Given enough space, there could be a small tree nursery attached, to encourage the planting of trees to replace those used.

Impossible dream? Take a look at this: www.woodrecycling.org.uk

Would you like to help make this happen in Kirkbymoorside? Contact: kmegadmin@phonecoop.coop

To extend the range of activities that can be offered new volunteers are essential. Do you have a couple of hours a week to spare on a regular basis? Do you have a particular talent that you can share to enhance the facilities that are offered at this community hub? If so, they would be delighted to hear from you. Come along to the library and chat to a member of the team.

Does the thought of paperwork drive you crazy?

Make a difference in 2019 to our local community! Email Marion: nortoncommunitylibrary@gmail. com or telephone 01609 534552

Busy Malton Men’s Choir Seeks to Expand

M

alton District Male Voice Choir is seeking new members at the start of its twelfth full year as the region’s youngest, and probably now Malton District Male Voice Choir singing for guests at Malton’s Talbot also one of its best-known, men’s Hotel. singing groups. “If those new year resolutions are proving difficult to stick to, try joining us”, said local singer Tom Todd, who created the choir in 2007. “It’s easy to join, great fun, lots of laughs and doesn’t take up a lot of time. It’s good for your health and social life too!” he added. The invitation comes as the choir resumes practices late January at the start of what promises to be another active year. It meets Mondays at 7.30pm in Malton Baptist Church hall, next to Yates’ store.

“Whatever your age and background this is the ideal time to join us”, said Tom. “We now urgently need new members and can guarantee a very grateful welcome”, he said. Choir Musical Director Vivien Wilcock added: “Our repertoire is never boring and there is always something for every musical taste. The programme ranges from Welsh classics and songs from the Shows to Disney. The bigger the choir gets, the wider our repertoire of songs becomes”, she declared. Already scheduled for 2019 are concerts for a local charity and for the Royal Air Force to follow an RAF commemoration concert last year in Sleights near Whitby. The choir will also sing in Great Edstone again this year and join other local choirs in a song festival in Bridlington. Because of its small size the choir remains popular for weddings and family events in churches and village hall venues. To book the choir for an event, or to join us, call Secretary David Ackroyd on 01944 758693 or Chairman Tom Todd on 01653 692362 or visit our website on www.mdmvc.co.uk

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or

Short Story Holy Wellington Boots Ronnie lifted his forehead from the steering wheel and prodded Uncle Graeme’s shoulder. Graeme spluttered awake. “Have we arrived?” “Nope, we’re out of petrol,” Ronnie replied. “Turns out your car doesn’t run on fresh air after all.” The ladies of the Women’s Institute were expecting Graeme in half an hour for a talk on success and being in tune with the universe. Graeme had decided over Christmas to pursue a career as a professional motivational speaker. He’d bagged this, his first gig, after the gentleman booked to demonstrate flower arranging had to cancel due to allergies. This, Graeme claimed, was just more evidence of the universe working in his favour. The fact that he’d lost his driving licence was not an obstacle. It was a gift from the universe, claimed Graeme, because all successful people were chauffeur-driven. Ronnie considered it a bit rich that the universe was taking all the credit when he was the one doing all the driving. “The village is two miles up this road. If we run we could make it?” “Run?” Graeme spluttered. “It will hardly give the right impression if I arrive out of puff.” He shook his head. “They need to see me as I am, a hugely successful man.” Ronnie looked at his map for clues. “Found it!” he said, pleased with himself. “A footpath cuts across that field, we could walk it in twenty minutes.” “I’ll just get my wellies,” Ronnie said, climbing out of the car. “Aren’t you the proper little boy scout!” Graeme declared, following him. “It’s just common sense,” Ronnie replied. “My shoes are leather-soled and bespoke.” He presented his toe in the manner of a portly ballerina. “Do you not think if we were to ask the universe,” he continued, “it would indicate that I should wear the boots?” 62 | Handy Mag | December 2018

Ronnie sighed; once more Graeme and his universe had ganged up on him. He handed the wellies to his uncle, who stared at them indignantly. “I’ll never get so much as a toe in these!” He thrust them back at Ronnie. “The universe has other plans for my feet. Let’s be off.” After a weekend’s rain the verge was soft and boggy, but just ahead was a public footpath sign. The clouds above them cracked open and a weak shaft of sunlight picked out something on the ground. Sitting neatly, waiting for them, was a pair of wellington boots. They looked exactly Graeme’s size. “That’s unbelievable!” Ronnie gasped. “Who’s left them there?” “It’s quite simple.” Graeme was already removing his shoes. “I required waterproof footwear, and the universe provided.” “That’s blown my mind.” Ronnie rubbed his chin, wondering if maybe Graeme had been right all along. “Hand me the boots, dear boy,” Graeme said, wobbling on one foot. Ronnie lifted them gingerly, afraid they were a mirage. “We have a problem.” He held the boots up like binoculars, while two rubber soles remained on the ground. “Their bottoms have fallen off.” Perhaps the universe had a sense of humour after all. Malton Food Festival

The 132nd Malton Show

Malton In Bloom

The Pride of Malton & Norton Awards

Review of the Year 2018 So, 2018 has drawn to a close and what a year it was. From a wintry start to a glorious summer, a royal wedding, the World Cup and even Brexit, the Handy Mags have continued to be delivered across Ryedale and the York villages! This month marks the 150th edition of the Handy Mag Ryedale, can you believe it? We thought this was an appropriate time to look back on a wonderful year and local events that Team Handy Mag have been lucky enough to attend.

JANUARY

There were traditional pantomimes across our region. Tim Peake’s spacecraft landed in York and we focussed on getting fit!

FEBRUARY

A full-on Viking invasion occurred at the JORVIK Viking Festival. The first since the reopening of the reimagined JORVIK Viking Centre in Easter 2017. 68 | Handy Mag | January 2019

Women in Business

MARCH

To celebrate international women’s day, we focussed on some of our local inspirational business women. It was wonderful to find out all about them and made us proud to be living in such thriving area.

APRIL

Holly, our support administrator, started her maternity leave. We’re very much looking forward to her

return in March. We have lots of exciting things planned for this year so we are hoping that the sleepless nights become less frequent so she can throw herself back into office life! (well, in between looking after her beautiful boys!)

MAY

Summer started and so did the Haxby and Wigginton Scarecrow festival. Nicky attended the event with her children as usual – the fabulous creativity of these two villages never ceases to amaze and delight! The event raised a fantastic £5266 for Christian Aid, The Special Care Baby Unit at York Hospital, Oaken Grove Community Centre and Wigginton Old School. Malton Food Festival was bigger and better than ever this year, complete with a star-studded line up of Yorkshire’s own Michelinstarred chefs.

JUNE

Edstone Festival returned, now a well-established, family friendly music festival. St Leonards Hospice had their summer fair, complete with a purple pig petting farm, and we were happy to be able to support local charity The Island in their search for new volunteers.

JULY

We were sponsors of Haxby Carnival this year on a beautiful sunny day that saw the village of Haxby welcome the opening Carnival Procession, fancy-dress, music, and entertainment. The 132nd Malton Show took place at Scampston Park and Marianne was there for a look around at the livestock and stands. If she didn’t know the difference between a British Blonde and British Blue, she definitely does now! The Handy Mag were sponsors of the event this year and it really was a great day out for all the family.

AUGUST & SEPTEMBER

This edition RYEDALE RYEDALE was exciting as we ran a feature about Ryedale Special Families. We were overwhelmed GET A MOVE ON! HELP RYEDALE SPECIAL FAMILIES by the FIND A SPECIAL HOME number of our advertisers willing to support such a worthy cause. A huge thank you to those who helped us raise over £900! In Poppleton the scarecrows were taking over at the village’s third festival. In September Malton in Bloom excelled in the Yorkshire in Bloom competition with a Gold award. A brilliant community effort. LOCAL BUSINESSES, LOCAL EVENTS, LOCALLY-BASED

OCTOBER

The team were very excited to see York Opera perform Carmen at York Theatre Royal. There were some outstanding performances and the whole Company did justice to one of the most famous operas of all time.

York Business Week

DECEMBER

This is always a hectic month and we try to include as much as possible from Christmas services to Santa runs, light switch-ons, fairs and pages and pages of events. It is always a busy month, but I don’t think the event pages have ever been that full! We love being able to spread the word about all things local and (this is mainly Imogen in the office!) all things Christmas. Please keep sending us your events and we will keep making room in the listings for them.

The Pride of Malton & Norton Awards were a big success at The Talbot this year and Nicky and Marianne were very excited to attend. Mandy has organised the event since it started 9 years ago, and here at The Handy Mag we think it is a fantastic celebration of local people and local businesses. Long may it continue!

NOVEMBER

York Business Week was a main talking point in York during 13th to 19th November. Mandy, Marianne and Nicky went along to the SuperNetworking and Conference and have been raving about how many people they met and how interesting the talks were ever since. This year marked the 100 anniversary of the end of WW1 so Nicky worked extra hard to make sure details of the local Remembrance events were included in the magazines. th

At the Handy Mag we are looking forward to another exciting and full year of supporting our local communities and businesses in 2019! thehandymag.co.uk | 69

A

pparently, I over-indulged at Christmas but who can blame me when I get a bowl full of Pawsecco, a stocking full of treats and all the left-over Brussel sprouts! Stepping onto the scales at the vets was a bit embarrassing though, I tried the trick of leaning against the wall and having one foot off, but the vet noticed and tried to tempt me with a low calorie treat! The vet says my body condition score is too high as she can’t feel my ribs or see a waist any more, maybe I should have tried to suck my tummy in a bit? I have to go on a special diet to get the weight off, but I like what I like so it better taste good! Mum isn’t allowed to just cut down my usual food otherwise I won’t get all the nutrients that I need and it will make me hangry (hungry and angry!). I also need to get out more which is great news as long as it isn’t raining. I’ve got to go back to see the veterinary nurse in two weeks time for a weigh-in, I wonder if my mum will be checked as well? Love from Jasper and his Mum ( Sarah Hunter)
