The past weeks, and now too, have been a time for summer fruit picking; stained fingers, the horror of that moldy strawberry that appeared so good from above and indifferent weather add to the whole experience. But as I contemplate such activity this weekend, with my son as trusty helper, the rewards can be high. I aspire to match the tastiness of my Mother-inlaw’s summer puddings. Should I get around to making such as dish, it’ll probably disappoint, but then it’s as much an excuse to eat lots of sweet sticky fruit, breathe some fresh air and remind ourselves about the seasons and where fruit comes from! It’s not long now until the children finish for the summer. Is it my, or their, increasing age which makes me think they get more and more difficult to entertain. Gone are the days I could put out some paints, playdough, lego, cardboard and glue etc. for a peaceful time. Greater incentives are now needed to entice them from the x-box and whatever my daughter does on her ipod for seemingly endless hours of everyday. Shopping, surfing, kayaking and other (expensive) adventures seem essential. Why are they so blind to the housework and gardening that keeps us parents so ‘entertained’! So if you need to find a service, local group or event, have a look here. This month I have devoted pages 14 to 31 to a special Malton focus. There is so much to be proud of in the town. Well done to Garry Cooper and Nick Bagnall for giving the Milton Rooms a new lease of life. I’m looking forward to many more productions and seeing the final result of their refurbishment. The winner of the May competition was Jayne Wilson of Norton. Well done!

Moroccan Chicken with Couscous

This is a great dish for summer entertaining. The marinade ingredients combine during cooking to make a delicious sauce that goes so well with couscous. Tapenade (a paste made from olives) and harissa (a North African chilli paste) are both widely available in supermarkets, Belazu being a good brand to look out for.

Ingredients (serves 6) Marinade:

90g pot of green olive tapenade 60ml runny honey 50ml olive oil 6 large garlic cloves, crushed 60 ml Harissa 1 pack of fresh coriander, a few sprigs reserved for the finished dish and the rest chopped 15ml turmeric Juice of 3 lemons 2 tsp paprika

14 pieces of chicken – drumsticks and thighs Salt and black pepper 160ml runny honey 125ml water 2 lemons cut into segments

Couscous:

300g Couscous Chicken stock – made with a cube is fine Small bunch each fresh coriander and flat leaf parsley, chopped 1 pack of ready to eat pomegranate seeds Two handfuls shelled pistachio nuts, roughly chopped Green salad to serve

Method

• Get a large measuring bowl or jug and place it on your kitchen scales. Set the scales to zero and start measuring all the marinade ingredients directly into the jug, remembering to set to zero between each ingredient. • Combine well, mix with the chicken pieces and marinate overnight if possible, covered in the fridge. Don’t worry if you haven’t time for this as it still tastes great with only an hour marinating time. • Heat the oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4 • Put the chicken pieces and marinade into a 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

roasting dish and season well with salt and black pepper. Drizzle with honey, pour over the water and place the lemon segments between the chicken pieces. Bake uncovered in the middle of the oven for 45 minutes to an hour depending on the size of your chicken pieces, until the chicken is cooked thoroughly and the juices run clear. Make the couscous when you are ready to serve the meal – Make up a chicken stock cube with a pint of boiling water in a jug. Put the couscous in a medium bowl and add enough hot chicken stock to just cover. Cover the bowl with cling film and leave for a few minutes until the couscous has absorbed all the stock. Fork though the couscous and mix in the chopped herbs, pistachios and pomegranate seeds. Pile the couscous onto a large warmed serving plate and top with the chicken and lemon segments, garnish with a few sprigs of coriander and serve the remaining sauce on the side. I do think most things are covered here.” Jeremy Powell, owner of Palace Cinema, agrees. He said: “I love the character of the place, and I think it has got so much going for it. The market is becoming really strong, the independent local businesses have everything you’d need, and it has managed to resist being taken over by the ‘high street’.” “Customers of Palace Cinema love the fact that they can walk here, have a drink while they watch a film, it’s relaxed, good value, and right on their doorstep. Although we’re small, we always have screenings of new films right on the release date.” Yvonne Slack, proprietor of Plum, which has sold jewellery, contemporary gifts and cards in Malton for five years, said she had found the local community to be welcoming and supportive: “Malton is a great town and I receive a lot of repeat business from local people. I think Malton people know that if they don’t support the local shops, we will lose them. I hear it time and time again from local people, they keep coming back because they want to support us.” Sarah Clark, director of R Yates and Sons, which has been in Malton since 1845, said the quality of service provided by longstanding businesses put the town way ahead for shoppers. She said: “Our staff are amazing; they know everything about our stock and our customers. Did you know... Malton was burned down in 1138 by the Archbishop of York to flush out the Scots occupying it at the time. When it was rebuilt, it became known as ‘New Malton’ - hence the village of Old Malton just one mile away. The Romans arrived in 71 AD. Malton is the oldest town fort founded by the Romans north of the Humber, just older than York. They left around 429AD and many of the artefacts from this period can be seen in Malton Museum.

“Let’s beat it together”

his spring Slimming World challenged members, to join their ‘Lets beat it together’ campaign to lose weight and give the whole community the gift of a healthier, happier future. The 12 week challenge started at the beginning for March and last year helped Slimming World members nationally lose 193,000 stone in total. Anne Rutter, local Slimming World consultant, challenged her Malton groups and together they managed to lose an amazing 85 stone over 3 months! Anne has been running groups in the Ryedale area for 14 years and has helped thousands of members shed the misery of excess weight. “I’m so proud of all of our local members,” says Anne, “They have worked very hard to lose this amount of weight in just 12 weeks.” Over 62% of adults are overweight or obese in the UK and there are now more men than women in this category. “We welcome anyone to Slimming World including men and even children - as long as they are over 11.” explains Anne.

Bringing the Milton Rooms back to life has been a labour of love for a highly dedicated and hard-working few. Now, the whole community is being invited to share it.

f, while strolling through the centre of Malton on a summer’s evening last month, you met a man with a donkey’s head being followed by a large crowd of people, you hadn’t gone mad, and neither had they. It was simply part of the plan to win the Milton Rooms a place in the heart of the local community. The ‘promenade’ production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream – in which much of the action takes place in the streets, alleys and churches of the town – was the Milton Rooms’ first ‘in-house’ production, starring seven professional performers and 180 local people. As well as overseeing a huge refurbishment project, planning arts events and promoting the Milton Rooms, artistic directors Garry Cooper and Nick Bagnall are actors and directors themselves. So, rather than just encouraging touring performers to make a stop in Malton, they decided to put something on themselves. Two more plays are planned for this year, and more for 2012. Garry and Nick, along with the third man in the team, Nick Barton, share an ambition to make Malton a cultural centre of national importance; promising talks are now taking place with Shakespeare’s Globe and Kneehigh Theatre with a view to bringing their productions to Malton.

A new lease of life The two working rooms have just been kitted out for theatrical and musical events, with grants from North Yorkshire County Council, Ryedale Council and the Fitzwilliam Estate. The money was invested in sound and lighting equipment and new stage curtains in the main hall, which was also redecorated. The bar was renovated into a studio theatre for small productions and acoustic gigs. Garry said: “The support is growing and we are starting to get people from the local community coming along to take on jobs in and around the building. 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Nick Bagnall and Garry Cooper “Things are really developing now and it’s a great time for local people to really get behind us.” The long term plan is to renovate the older, Georgian part of the building, which is currently out of use, to provide space to be used by local artists. Garry added: “The Milton Rooms can provide lots of opportunities for the local community – and we do want to invite them in. Come down and see us, have a chat and a tour of the building. You can volunteer to help with building, decorating and fixing jobs, a bit of admin or front-of-house when we have events on. “We’d especially like to give young people the chance to use the space – if you’re into drama or you’re a musician, we have rooms here where you can come and work.”

They are a tribute to the efforts of the people who create them, who clearly get pleasure and satisfaction from doing so. But they also lift the spirits of those who pass by and make our locality a more attractive place to live in or to visit. This years event will be a Community Gardening competition called “Strictly Come Gardening”. Malton Food Lovers Festival leaves the whole town buzzing

he 3rd Food Lovers Festival in Malton attracted over 10K enthusiastic visitors over its first ever weekend and producers are already clamouring to ensure they get a stall for next year’s event.

200 chocolate bars on the Sunday. Another producer of baked goods sold out by 1.30 on the Saturday and baked through the night to ensure sufficient supplies were available for the next day’s trading.

Malton’s first complete weekend celebration of Yorkshire’s finest food and drink received glowing approvals from the crowds of visitors who flocked in to the Market Place to buy from some 100 high quality food and drink producers and to meet celebrity Patrons including cookery guru Rosemary Shrager and food writer and columnist Tom Parker Bowles. Over the two days 22 cookery demonstrations by some of the region’s best known chefs, including Stephanie Moon, Tim Bilton and Andrew Pern, played to packed audiences in two specially created cookery theatres.

The highly acclaimed Beer and Wine Festival within the Milton Rooms also proved a sell out with some 3000 pints of beer and cider sold over the two days.

Tom Parker Bowles commented: “The quality of the produce and the conversations the producers have with visitors at an event like this puts Malton on par with the best in the country. It is a total joy to be part of it and l can’t wait for next year.”

Tom Naylor-Leyland of Fitzwilliam Estates said: “The sheer numbers of people coming into Malton to enjoy the array of chef demonstrations, to taste and purchase the wonderful fresh produce direct from the makers and growers over the weekend was phenomenal. The whole town was buzzing and the popularity of the Taste Trail meant that visitors had a real incentive to explore and discover all that the town has to offer, whilst enjoying some exceptional food and drink. We have had some very positive feedback and we are already thinking about next year’s event!”

One of the surprise sell out successes of the weekend was the newly introduced festival Welcome to Yorkshire Taste Trail which allowed visitors to seek out a range of venues around the town offering tasting dishes in return for prepurchased vouchers. Hundred of tasting dishes were consumed with many venues calling for repeat replenishments to keep up with demand. “The Animal Kingdom” Ryedale Festival Exhibition of Paintings and Sculpture Stef Ottevanger Lazing dog

For the second year, the summer exhibition at Talents Fine Arts in Malton Market Place forms part of the Ryedale Festival. It shares this year’s Festival theme of “The Animal Kingdom” and features drawings, paintings and sculptures of birds and animals wild and domestic, native and foreign. Five artists and one sculptor are showing their work in the exhibition. Within the overall theme, they cover a wide spectrum of subject matter as well as of style and media.

Mark Azopardi works

primarily in watercolour but has developed styles to suit the mood of each piece, leading to the use of metal leaf, oil and acrylic paints, and pen and ink in some of his work. He says that the theme linking all his work is capturing the textures of the natural world, and his paintings succeed to the point where the viewer wants to reach out and feel the hide of the rhino or elephant. Mark has lived in York for almost 20 years and has exhibited widely in Yorkshire and in London.

Frances Brock has lived

in Yorkshire for over 30 years and has been painting for 20 years. She says: “I love the actual process of painting, as the glorious colours move and blend and settle in shining water, creating unexpected effects. Painting has taught me to see the world with new eyes”. She is especially known for her paintings of cats, dogs, hens, cows and other domestic and farm animals. She works mainly in watercolour and acrylics, but is also a printmaker.

Stef Ottevanger has

made animal sculptures since childhood. She studied fine art at Harrogate School of Art before a career in teaching, and then turned to working full time on animal sculptures over 20 years ago. Inspiration for her work

comes from the animals with which she has regular contact - working dogs and farm animals typical of the area around her Swaledale home. The work in this exhibition has been originally undertaken in clay and then reproduced (mostly in limited editions) in bronzed resin.

comes from Birmingham and obtained a degree in fine art from Edinburgh University. Most of her paintings are of native wildlife, especially birds and small mammals, in their natural environment. She now divides her time between North Yorkshire and Berkshire, increasing her opportunity for depicting a variety of habitats.

Nolon Stacey is a self taught

graphite artist specializing in fine art drawings of rural scenery and farm and wild animals and birds. He obtained a degree in mathematics but throughout his childhood in South Yorkshire and in his subsequent life he has maintained a passion for drawing. He now lives in Wensleydale, and his passion for drawing, together with the knowledge of his subjects which comes from living amongst them, are apparent in his work.

Ben Waddams is a young

artist working in oils, acrylics, and

pen and ink. He says: “My love and fascination for the natural world has brought me endless joy since before I can remember. I have been lucky enough to have lived and travelled in some truly mesmerizing areas of the world and this is where I take my inspiration from”. His aim is to raise awareness of the need for conservation and he hopes to realise that aim by bringing the reality of wildlife in all its variety to those who own or view his paintings. Talents Fine Arts has been running for well over 20 years. It was taken over 3 years ago by John Gill, Stephen Douglas, Frances and Robert Brock. The gallery has 3 main exhibitions per year and also takes part in Ryedale Artfest. Between those exhibitions, there are regularly changing displays of work by over 30 artists, many from Yorkshire but some from further aﬁeld.

Vegetable Growing T here is something lovely about this time of year: even on the less appealing days it rarely gets too chilly, the soil is warm and feels all the more full of potential. But there is no doubt that your vegetable growing may seem to be close to peaking and perhaps in some areas on the decline. Rather than forgetting the fun of growing your own until next year, why not add to what you already have and start some crops from fresh? If you’ve missed the boat totally and never actually planted anything this year, there’s still time to grow some tasty home grown vegetable and herbs.... it’s not too late to start, but you’ll have to get your skates on. That lovely warm soil is a real advantage to those somewhat tenuous sowings made right at the start of the season, but you may also have to spend more time watering your vegetables, especially when the plants are small. Sow yourself some ruby chard. These brightly coloured plants mean you can create something seriously good-looking as well as tasty. ‘Bright Lights’ is the wackiest with bright yellow, orange, red, pink and purple stems. It can be sown successfully into August and can be used as ‘baby leaves’ for salads or as an alternative to spinach. Several of the oriental vegetables respond especially well to later sowing. Mizuna, with its pretty divided leaves and ability to grow very fast, can be sown right through from now and into September. Good 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

in stir fries or as a salad ingredient, Mizuna does best in a sunny site. A covering of fleece helps to keep the flea-beetle away and so prevent the leaves becoming riddled with tiny holes.

Spring onions make tasty additions to many meals and they grow rapidly. A prompt sowing now should still give you a crop of tiny spring onions in October. Sow enough to leave some in the soil where you can then harvest full-sized versions in March. Carrots can be sown for many weeks of the year and some varieties of ‘maincrop’ carrot including ‘Ideal’ can still be sown until early August. Sow within the week and you’ll be cropping from autumn to Christmas time. Choose a light soil, free from stones, or grow in a deep container. If in doubt about sowing times, just check the packet. I love eating them, but hate buying those ridiculously expensive baby spinach leaves, but grow your own and you can have as many as you like for little outlay. Make successional sowings from now and in to September and in five to six weeks you can harvest baby leaves. If you like full-sized spinach leaves, then just leave the crop in the ground and allow it to grow a little more. Chinese cabbage is another late-season stalwart. It is one of the fastest growers I know and perfect for anyone who wants a delicate steamed vegetable or a wonderfully tasty and

crunchy addition to a Chinese style meal. If you sow promptly you should be harvesting in late October. If you enjoy miniature beetroot or baby beet as they’re often known, then buy a packet of beetroot seed and sow some of them promptly for a delicious, crop of small-sized beetroot from the autumn until Christmas. French beans are so much better when grown at home. It is hard to make them tough or tasteless. A speedy sowing now should produce plenty of beans that you can harvest in midautumn. Choose a variety such as ‘Tendergreen’ and it should perform well. There are numerous different colours and shapes of salad leaf available and they can be sown now, either singly or in combination. Simply use scissors to snip off what you need and as long as you don’t cut too low, they’ll act as a cutand-come-again crop. Look out for mixed seed packs including all sorts of tasty varieties such

Cheap Convertibles T he sun may have only been out for a little bit, but with the smell of barbecues comes that annual hankering for a cheap convertible. There’s nothing quite like a spot of topdown motoring when the temperature manages to haul itself into double figures – and the good news is it won’t have to cost you a second mortgage. Here, we delve into the online classifieds to find you five bargain summer sizzlers that you can put on your drive for less than £2,000. Just remember to save some cash for the Factor 50…

Oral care for pets Imagine never brushing your teeth or visiting the dentist, sadly this is often the case for our pets. Signs that may indicate your pet has dental problems include smelly breath, pawing at the mouth, drooling, red or bleeding gums, yellow or brown tartar on the teeth, tooth loss and loss of appetite. Dental disease develops with plaque sticking to the teeth after eating, if this is not removed it builds up until it forms visible hard tartar on the tooth which also goes under the gum line. This irritates the gums causing them to become reddened and inflamed and result in gingivitis, which causes pain and sometimes a reluctance to eat. If left untreated the animal may go on to develop periodontal disease which can result in tooth loss and may lead to infections affecting other organs in the body. Some cats suffer from gingivitis from a young age due to a virus they have come into contact with at some time. For these pets oral hygiene is even more important. Older animals, cats and small breed dogs are often more prone to dental problems as are animals that are fed a wet diet that sticks to the teeth. Some animals develop dental disease quite early in life. To ensure your pets teeth are kept in good condition it is important to try brushing regularly from an early age – we offer free nurse appointments to show you how to brush your 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

pets teeth. However if this turns out to be impossible there are various products on the market that can help maintain healthy teeth. Vet practices sell a specially formulated dry food diet that is designed to wipe the teeth clean of plaque as the biscuits are chewed. The diet contains an antioxidant that has been proven to slow the progression of dental disease, this dental diet can also be fed as one or two biscuits as a treat or alongside their normal diet or alternatively you can replace your dogs daily treat with a dentistix or raw hide chew. There are also oral hygiene rinses that can be sprayed onto the teeth and gums to reduce the plaque bacteria that causes the gingivitis . A product called ‘plaque off’ can be added to the food daily to help prevent plaque build up and logic gel can be used to brush with or simply applied to the pets paw so they lick it off as it contains enzymes that also break down plaque. If your pet already has dental disease your vet may suggest carrying out a scale and polish under general anaesthetic to remove the plaque and possibly any infected teeth as they can also get tooth root abscesses, root exposure where the gum has shrunk back and caries as we can. It is therefore

important as well as checking your pets teeth regularly for signs of dental disease and using preventative treatment that you get the vet to check them annually usually at the time of booster vaccination. Dental checks with a nurse are free and you will receive a free dental pack containing dentistix and other samples and leaflets. Getting to know I.T. Acer c20 Pico Projector The Acer c20 Pico Projector is about the same size as a modern SmartPhone but slighter thicker. It has a built-in battery so you can, in theory, use it without mains power. It comes with a charger and several cables/adapters to connect to various devices such as your laptop. My initial idea was that it would be good to carry in place of a larger projector when doing small venue presentations, demonstrations or training. However I found that the connector to connect to a SmartPhone was an optional extra and when connected to a laptop the native resolution was less than the standard laptop screen so although the effective screen size was larger, the amount you could get on was less. I later found that better results were achievable if your laptop has an HDMI output in addition to the standard VGA output. However, in a normally lit office environment the image was also difficult to see clearly unless you beamed the image onto a screen close to the projector but this defeats the object and you may

as well use a normal laptop screen or 19-21” TFT monitor. Connecting the Acer c20 to a Freeview Recorder using a HDMI cable and mini-to-standard HDMI convertor (not included but not expensive) and dimming the room light levels and the c20 appears to have found a possible use. Probably not in an office but in a living room or more realistically a bedroom as a replacement for a flat panel TV. With a flat, light coloured wall the images are clear and watchable without having to also acquire a projector screen. The HDMI feed from a HD device will give High Definition video quality up to 1080i. In my tests I mounted the projector onto a standard inexpensive camera tripod stand (<£10 from Lidl), fed a freeview HD signal from an AC-Ryan PVR and

projected onto a flat wall 8ft away and achieved a watchable image with a diagonal image size of about 60”. The projector also comes with a built-in speaker and headphone/audio out socket. The advantage of this over a TV or conventional protector is that is uses very little power (<10w), runs silently and gives you a 60” image for the same price as some much smaller TVs but takes up virtually no room. On the down side I found that the projector did not run very long on battery so best to keep it on mains and you need to have a device such as a laptop or freeview/sky HD/DVD unit to feed it a signal as it has no built-in tuner. I found the Acer c20 pico projector to be good, but maybe not for the original purpose intended. It takes very little time to setup, can be quickly focused using a manual focus wheel on the side although I did find that after the projector had been running for a while you had to refocus the image and the full image edge to edge/corner to corner – was not in full focus but to be fair I was probably pushing it at 8ft away and wasn’t too bothered that I was aiming exactly perpendicular to the wall. Typical price is £160-180 online.

The group is affiliated to the Ramblers Association. We walk as a group all year at weekends - locally and throughout Yorkshire. We meet at Pickering swimming pool on Saturday or Sunday mornings. Most of our weekend walks are 5-12 miles in length. In addition during the summer months at 6.30pm on Thursday evenings, we enjoy walking on public footpaths in the Pickering area. Do you know someone who is experiencing sight problems, and is finding daily life difficult? We aim to help by providing activities and support for blind and sight impaired people. We offer fortnightly social meetings in both Malton and Pickering, excursions, an annual holiday, information and support, walking group, Yoga group, book group, computer training, and loan or supply of aids and equipment. All our activities are specially-tailored for those who are sight impaired, and fully supported by our volunteers. We also provide door-to-door transport. Many of our members are registered either blind or partially sighted, but you needn’t be registered to join us. But his sister, Lady Constance, has other ideas and arranges a house party into which bursts Dame Daphne Winkworth, whom the Earl is urged, much against his will, to marry. “With a Voice of Singing” A concert by Stamford Bridge Singers. Saturday 9th July at 7.30pm St Michaels Church, New Malton The concert, which will include music to suit all tasted, will feature items by Martin Shaw, Thomas Weelkes, Charles Wood and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The second half will see a complete change in tempo with a medley by Simon and Garfunkel and songs from West End shows. The Stamford Bridge Singers, a community choir of approximately 40 voices, meets weekly during term-time in the village of the same name.
