elcome to our July edition.
After 2½ years working from our little shop on Market Street in Malton, we are both happy and sad to be moving to bigger offices above The Deli of Malton and Smash Boutique with views over Malton Market Place. We will have much more storage space and have room to chat with people when they drop in and see us. But we will miss the up and coming community on Market Street – no more waving to Butter Bees over the road or shouting out to Computer FX next door for IT support! Come and visit us later in July when we’re all settled in at 18F Market Place – or at least give us a wave when you’re passing! It really is summer this month and with the school holidays just weeks away, children all over are on a countdown to summer freedom. No fear, there

Our next edition covers both August and September. The deadline will be Tuesday 12th July. With relentless monthly deadlines it is a challenge for Nicky, Phil and myself to take a break at any other time of the year. This year I will be heading off to Wales with family and dogs in tow for some sun. Yes I know Wales doesn’t have a great reputation weather-wise but at least it’ll be a break from the computer! Whatever you’re up to this summer, remember to keep your Handy Mag with you. It’s perfect for reading with a coffee in the garden or, if the weather is our usual British variety, curled up indoors! Well done to Miss Dowkes from Pickering for winning our May competition.
Marianne

MALTON MUSEUM OPENS ITS NEW EXHIBITION Malton Museum has thrown open its doors to reveal its newly refurbished space and free exhibition, Malton Goes to Market. The exhibition transports you back in time to explore its rich history and share stories of Malton and Norton. Within the exhibition you can follow the drone footage through the town and down the river, examine the interactive map and listen to the stories of people past and present. Even play the part of a Victorian trader by exploring the costumes, made for both adults and children! Younger visitors will enjoy taking part in the hands on activities and following Fido our museum dog as he leads you around the exhibition. The exhibition features a varied array of objects from Malton’s prehistoric past to more recent items from local traders and businesses. Popular pieces include trade tokens from a local draper, and the beautiful illustrations by Arma Wrangham Hardy created in
1912 which depict life in Malton. The museum is running a variety of events over the summer for both adults and families to accompany the exhibition including its popular hands on workshops. The museum based in the Subscription Rooms, Yorkersgate is open Thursday to Saturday 10am – 4pm until the 29th October.
For information on the events please drop into the Museum or telephone on 01653 691262, visit www.maltonmuseum.co.uk or tweet @MaltonMuseum.

Stand for Small Business at the Ryedale Show
S
from WEAB Motors and Ena Anne Screeton who have all been involved in the Ryedale branch for many years.
Locally, the Ryedale branch of the FSB is chaired by Abigail Stockell-Beckett with the help of vice chair Roz Collins, a busy local bookkeeper, Walter Bratley
Roz believes that small business is crucial in our rural area and says “We want to ensure that new and current members of the FSB in Ryedale get the best from their membership. The FSB are experts in business, offering a wide range of vital business services and with many changes in regulations coming into force this year such as workplace pensions, the FSB is the place to go for information and help.”
mall businesses account for 99.3% of all private sector businesses and are critical to the strength of our economy. With many more people now taking the plunge into self-employment and starting a business, the role of the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) has never been more important.
Roz is so passionate about the role of FSB in Ryedale, she has decided to support a stall at Ryedale Agricultural Show to make sure the message of FSB membership reaches many more small businesses in the area. The Ryedale branch of the FSB meets once a month at the Blacksmiths Arms in Pickering, who are also members. The meetings are a mixture of networking, talks about subjects relevant to small businesses and catching up with other local businesses.
If you’d like to find out more about the stall at the Ryedale Show or about the local branch of the FSB, give Roz a call on 07747 023711 or visit www.fsb.org.uk

Trevor Hirst has over 15 years’ experience providing technical advice and guidance for people of all ages on all matters relating to websites, email marketing, social media, search engine optimisation and website content and layout. He says “Websites and the internet can cause a lot of confusion and frustration for people. How many pages should there be? How much content is needed? How can I make sure my website is readable on mobile phones? Should I use email marketing? What about a blog and social networks? How do I get on page one of Google? I prefer to visit the client at their home or office so that I can get a better understanding of the business needs as well as collect information and content.” Trevor has found that few people understand the complexities of managing and preparing an efficient website to create a professional image. He also helps people optimise their websites for best search engine rankings, which is the Holy Grail for anyone wanting to get more visits to their website - a subject he gets asked about many times. A GOOD READ By Willow Coby
The Time Traveler’s Wife by Audrey
Niffenegger Published in 2004, Niffenegger’s debut work has become an international best-seller. In 1991 20-yearold Claire is an artist who makes paper sculptures for a living. She bumps into 28-year-old Henry, a librarian at the local library. He has never met her before, but Claire has known him all her life. Henry was born with a genetic disorder which causes him to time travel. He has no control over it, and cannot predict how long he will stay in one time. He jumps around his own timeline and experiences events in his own history. So, on this day in 1991 when he and Claire meet, she becomes a part of his experiences and therefore his timeline. Their ‘first’ encounter is when Claire is just 6 years old. Over his many ‘visits’ as she grows into adulthood they form a close relationship and eventually fall in love. Niffenegger wanted to create the perfect soulmate. If that is what Henry is then it explains why Claire spends her life waiting for him to appear in hers. It raises the question of
whether a brief moment of pure happiness is worth the pain when that moment is over.
The Raven Queen by Pauline Francis
The death of Edward VI at the tender age of 15 saw the throne pass to a Lady Jane Grey, just 16 years old. Jane usurped Edward’s sisters Mary and Elizabeth, but she was merely a pawn in a political game of power. A few days later it was declared that Mary was in fact the rightful queen, Jane was accused of treason and just nine days after her accession to the throne she was beheaded. In this novel aimed at young adult readers we learn what Lady Jane Grey’s life might have been like. Francis’ novel takes the real-life Jane and creates a semifictional account of her short life. It is of course first and foremost a fictional novel so there are historical inaccuracies. However, the Tudor period is brought to life in a clever and memorable way. And Jane becomes more than just a footnote in a history book.

RAGWORT POISONING
Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic Ragwort poisoning is one of the most common causes of liver disease in horses and ponies in the UK. Ragwort is a tall plant with yellow flowers. Its scientific name is Senecio jacobea and it contains a poison (toxin) which is also found in some other plants, such as Lantana and some Heliotropes. The poison is found in variable concentrations in different parts of the plant and at different stages of its growth. The plants are not palatable and horses will not usually eat them unless pasture is heavily contaminated or there is little other food available. However, the poison is very stable and remains toxic even when the dried plant is incorporated into hay. The most common cause of ragwort poisoning is therefore from chronic (long-term) eating of hay which includes dried ragwort.
Signs of ragwort poisoning
Unless very large quantities of fresh plants are eaten, which is very uncommon in UK, the symptoms of poisoning are usually not seen until 4 weeks to 6 months after eating the plants. Small doses of the poison gradually accumulate in the horse’s liver where it causes damage to the liver cells and subsequent scarring, eventually causing the liver to shrink in size. Symptoms of liver disease only develop when the organ is no longer able to compensate for the loss of functional tissue. Symptoms usually develop quite suddenly, although in some horses and ponies slight illness can precede more severe symptoms. Early signs include loss of appetite, depression, diarrhoea, weight loss and mild jaundice. More severe symptoms include marked jaundice and collapse or abnormal behaviour, which can range from profound depression to compulsive walking and pressing the head against objects, e.g. walls, apparent blindness, photosensitization (excessive sensitivity to sunlight) and convulsions. These behavioural abnormalities are caused by toxic effects on the horse’s brain (hepatic encephalopathy). Most severely affected cases with behavioural abnormalities die within approximately 10 days.
of ingestion of ragwort is often unclear due to the time lag between ingestion and the development of clinical signs. Laboratory tests, including the measurement of liver enzymes, bile acids and bilirubin levels in the horse’s blood, confirm a diagnosis of liver disease and assess the liver’s ability to function. To confirm the diagnosis of ragwort poisoning, a liver biopsy is required to demonstrate the typical microscopic abnormalities (pathology). If these are not found, the biopsy may help to suggest other possible causes of liver damage. Follow-up liver biopsies help to monitor progression of the condition in horses receiving treatment for ragwort poisoning.
Preventing ragwort poisoning
Any ragwort plants that are found should be pulled up by their roots and disposed of away from livestock. Do not leave cut or pulled plants in the paddock or they may be eaten when they have dried and are more palatable. Plants on adjacent land should be removed to avoid the spreading of seed back into your paddocks. Always ensure that there is adequate grazing or alternative food sources such as hay, so that your horse or pony is not tempted to eat any ragwort which may have been missed.

SUMMER IS FINALLY HERE AND THE RYEDALE DOG RESCUE VOLUNTEERS ARE FEELING THE HEAT... Summer is a busy time for RDR volunteers. Our fun dog shows and stalls help us to raise the funds we need to get through the busy winter months when the council pounds are full and many dogs are in desperate need of rescue. In many cases when a dog arrives in the pound they only have seven days for an owner to claim them and if this doesn’t happen they are put to sleep, regardless of age or breed. It is heartbeaking, but in a world where people breed their dogs indiscriminately and puppy farms are on the increase, rescues like RDR are the only lifeline for these dogs. So if you are looking for a new furry addition to the family, consider a rescue dog - They make fabulous pets and as a charity we believe in responsible re-homing so we aim to match you with the right dog and offer ongoing support for as long as you need it. You can help us - Rescue a dog, foster for us, fundraise for us or give a monthly donation. It all helps!
COMING EVENTS... Sunday 3rd July - RDR are running the fun dog show at Malton Show - Come along and support us! Saturday 9th July - Coffee morning, Wells Lane, Malton Sunday 10th July - Big Fun Dog Show & Family Fun Day, Scampston Park Malton. Lots of fun classes, have a go agility, games, stalls and lots more. A great day out for the family so why not come and join us and help us to raise funds to save more dogs in need. DOG OF THE MONTH: BILL Bill is a 5 year old Border Collie cross Springer spaniel who has been returned to the rescue through no fault of his own. He is a lovely character who is looking for a loving forever home.
For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. CAT HEALTH
The population of cats in the UK is at a record high. Some of these cats are much loved family pets, but many are from unplanned litters and become stray or feral cats, who can carry disease and have a damaging effect on the populations for wild birds and rodents. Un-spayed female cats can produce up to 18 kittens a year and there are simply not enough homes for them all. Unless you actively want your cat to have kittens we strongly recommend you have your male and female cats neutered from 4 months old. As well as preventing unwanted litters, there are many health benefits to early neutering of cats including fewer health problems and a longer life expectancy. Spaying your female cat before their first season can greatly reduce the risk of mammary cancer and prevent a life threatening uterus infection, called a pyometra. Infections can also be transmitted between cats through mating or passed from infected mothers to their offspring. There are behavioural benefits too that benefit both you and your cat. An un-neutered male cat tends to mark his territory by spraying urine; neutering can reduce his need to do this and also his inclination to roam so far from home. Un-neutered male cats also have a higher tendency to fight with other cats. Unneutered female cats are often restless and vocalise loudly by yowling during their seasons and they are very attractive to amorous tom cats. All in all, a neutered cat tends to be a happier and more contented cat. If you would like to discuss having your cat neutered or need more information please don’t hesitate to call us. We hope to see you and your cat soon! Michelle Grahame and Eleanor Kift Veterinary nursing colleagues at Station House Vets

SORRY!
ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
Talking of Sorry (did you see what I did there?) I was heartened to learn that Ronnie Corbett does appear to have been thinking ahead. He sold their beloved family home of 33 years for £1.27 million in 2003. They moved to a modest £250,000 house and dished out the rest to their daughters, Emma and Sophie. And as this was more than 7 years ago, they undoubtedly saved the family a 6 figure tax liability.
I
s it me, or have we had more than our fair share of celebrity deaths recently? I was struck by two very different approaches to Inheritance Tax by two of our ‘national treasures’. Cilla Black appears to have done no planning at all, and left her family a £6 million tax headache. That’s a lorra lorra tax. And it means the tax man will get twice as much as her three sons. Ouch. (Incidentally, I got into a spat over this very subject when more than one commentator accused me of scaremongering. Cilla Black’s lawyers will make sure they don’t pay the tax, they said. Well, unfortunately, it doesn’t work like that. You can’t do anything about it when you’re dead. Sorry.
Ronnie’s wife, Anne Hart, is known to have been rattled by the unfairness of death duties. She had a pop at the then Shadow Chancellor Ed Balls at the 2013 Pride of Britain Awards, saying, “We have already paid hundreds of thousands in tax. We should be able to leave what’s left to our girls.” Interesting comments coming out of our posts on social media around this subject. A surprisingly high number of people are saying that Inheritance Tax is fair because it stops people amassing vast fortunes. I’m guessing these people have no money. And very little prospect of getting any. Because they don’t appear to grasp that amassing vast fortunes rarely happens by magic, but is generally preceded by vast amounts of work.

PHOBIAS BY MARY MAHON
As people living in 2016, we are lucky enough to experience new things that decades ago would have been pure fantasy, yet with this modernised society there’s an increasing abundance of phobias derived from our new inventions and wider world understanding – to the point where even phobophobia, the fear of fear itself, is an official term! Logically, as society expands with opportunities there’s more to be afraid of, such as the fear of heights. In its simplest form, a fear of heights is listed as acrophobia. Centuries ago, a fear of heights may have occurred by being at the top of a cliff, or climbing a great tree, however our expanded capabilities have afforded us to build vast skyscrapers and travel through the skies in winged metal tanks, and so it is no surprise that we have developed specific phobias. Air travel itself is ‘aerophobia’, bridges are categorised under ‘gephyrophobia’ and a fear of high buildings is ‘batophobia’. Now, whilst there are many easily explainable fears that have been begotten out of our modern society, there are many phobias that appear slightly odd… Some phobias are specific to groups of people, such as Americophobia (all things American), Sinophobia (Chinese) and Anglophobia (British); for almost every country, there is a phobia that goes hand-in-hand with it. Similarly, there are fears that are specific to certain types of feelings and senses, such as getting peanut butter stuck to the roof of your mouth (arachibutyrophobia), the taste of sourness (acerophobia) and most bizarre of all, anatidaephobia, the sense that you are being watched by a duck. Even various body parts have also been recorded to inspire fear, as bellybuttons (omphalophobia), chins (geniophobia), knees (genuphobia) and even beards (pogonophobia) can cause panic attacks in some individuals. Yet perhaps most odd and ironic of all is the trending term for the fear of long words – hippopotomonstroesquipedaliophobia. 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Arguably, most relevant to our generation is nomophobia, the genuine fear of being out of mobile phone contact. However, as seemingly trivial some fears may be, they are very serious matters. Often, they can control elements of people’s lives and stop them from experiencing certain things, therefore it is important to try and overcome them. Life is so incredibly short, so don’t succumb to chronophobia – the fear of wasting your time.

Ryedale Rose Festival 9th & 10th July at RV Roger’s Nursery, Pickering
T
he Ryedale Rose Festival is a major event on the rose exhibitors’ calendar, and is well established at the RV Roger nurseries, where more than 600 varieties of roses are grown. The festival came to the nurseries 4 years ago, and since then, it has gone from strength to strength, with last year’s festival bringing in around 1200 visitors over the weekend. The Ryedale Rose Festival will showcase the achievements of some of the UK’s top rose exhibitors, as well as being a free rose-filled weekend for the whole family with live music, refreshments, talks, displays, and demonstrations. RV Roger Ltd is one of the UK’s top rose growers, and hosts this prestigious annual event, incorporating the British Isles Rose Society’s flagship annual show and awards ceremony. According to The Horticultural Trades Association, half of all garden owners grow roses somewhere in their garden, and new ones are being developed all the time. Previous Ryedale Rose Festivals have seen the introduction of new roses supporting charities such as the Calendar Girls, the Paralympian gold medal winner Hannah Lucy Cockcroft’s chosen charity, and Tommy’s Rose raising funds for the Western Front Association in this anniversary year!
Some of the highlights of the 2016 show... • British Isles Rose Society annual awards • New roses from the country’s top breeders • Amateur Rose Breeders association new varieties. • Local Ryedale schools class depicting a scene from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ • Two marquees displaying over 1000 roses • Rose pruning and budding demonstrations, plus the chance to try your own! • Seek advice from professionals about your own roses and gardens • Refreshments from ‘Fish ’n’ Chips’, the ‘Coffee Stop’ and Bradley’s Ice Cream. • The RV Roger rose fields open with more than 50,000 roses in bloom • Artists and craftsmen demonstrations, including Royal Horticultural Society’s Gold medal winning botanical artist Bridget Gillespie and sculptural Blacksmith David Stephenson • Top range of DeWit garden tools on sale at show special discounts • Talks from garden designer Stephen Bean • Kirkbymoorside Photographic Society display • Live musical entertainment throughout the day
Open to everyone, the free event will be a blaze of colour and scent, and is a rare opportunity to see displays by some of the premier rose growers in the UK. Visitors will be able to admire the huge range and diversity of our nation’s favourite flower, whilst having the unique opportunity to stroll amongst RV Roger’s rose fields and enjoy the heady experience of 50,000 rose bushes in full bloom.

Marie Curie needs you!
M
arie Curie is appealing for volunteers to join the current Malton & Norton Fundraising Group and help raise money for the local nursing service. Malton & Norton Fundraising Group organises fundraising activities and collections in the local community, encourages new volunteers to help the charity, as well as supporting Marie Curie’s major fundraising campaigns such as the Great Daffodil Appeal and Blooming Great Tea Party. Jennifer Carmichael, Community Fundraiser said, “Group members
can make an enormous difference locally by helping to raise the vital funds needed to support Marie Curie Nurses, who provide free care to people with terminal illnesses in their own homes. Marie Curie Nurses delivered 972 hours of care in Malton & Norton last year, and we desperately need more volunteers to help raise the vital funds that enable our nurses to continue providing this care. We need people with a broad range of skills to help us with our local fundraising activities, from people with the gift of the gab right through to organisers who can come up with event ideas. We also need as many helpers as possible,
so if you think you’ve got a couple of hours a month that you’d be able to give to support the local Marie Curie nursing service please get in touch!”
If you live in Malton, Norton or the surrounding areas, and would like to be part of a fantastic group of volunteers fundraising for Marie Curie, please contact Jennifer on 01904 755260 or Jennifer.Carmichael@mariecurie.org.uk.

GARDEN VIEW Garden Ornaments Ornaments polarise gardeners. They’re a love ‘em or hate ‘em subject. I fell firmly into the hate ‘em category. I thought they had a place in big country gardens but looked slightly tacky in suburbia. This antipathy may date back to my childhood and Mrs. Frost, our elderly neighbour, who had a front garden stuffed to the brim with gnomes, windmills and concrete toadstools. If our ball ever strayed into this shrine to kitsch she’d burst from her house with a banshee-like scream, brandishing a broom at us. Somewhere along the way though I’ve mellowed.
By Rachael Leverton
As I’ve studied show gardens and magazines I’ve realised that ornaments have a definite place in a garden as long as two important considerations are met: Context The ornaments complement the style of the garden. Classical statuary doesn’t work in contemporary spaces, while traditional gardens might need to avoid stainless steel or modern, abstract sculptures. Size Ornaments should be an appropriate size for the setting. Rules are there to be broken of course and whatever your garden type or size the ornament you choose should be special to you.
My father had a grumpy gargoylelike creature, set among ferns at the bottom of his patch. It made everyone who saw it smile in recognition of my dad’s own avuncular manner. A girly friend of mine has a series of small bronze faeries set around her tiny plot, which are perfectly in tune with her personality. I favour natural materials myself but several years ago I purchased beautiful and rather elegant heron created from recycled metal. I adore it because it reflects both my love of birds and my passion for recycling. It stands near a

Ornament Ideas… ...not a gnome in sight!
To set off ornamental grasses try ceramic balls in vivid blues and greens set among cobbles. For minimalist contemporary plots, mirrored columns and pyramids look striking. Classical statuary and urns look best in more formal, traditional settings. They are best made from marble or stone. Resin copies can look tacky. Don’t be frightened to show your sense of humour. Quirky can look brilliant in the right setting. Sculptor Dennis Fairweather’s best seller is a stone face and hands which emerge from a tub of water as if the figure had just been for a dip! Natural materials can be a good starting point for garden ornament novices. Balls and sculptures made from willow are subtle and elegant additions to any garden.

MOORSBUS 2016
SPORTS KIT & CRUTCHES APPEAL...UPDATE The Churches Together in Southern Ryedale group (CTSR) has received a very welcome donation of crutches. Janice Clark from CTSR, said “A supportive young woman, who is a keen runner, and whose daughter attends Sunday School in a local church had called. She had supported the appeal for shoes last year, and had already delivered two lots of sports kits. The crutches were to be her latest contribution. Wonderful!
Moorsbus services will run to and through the North York Moors every Sunday and Bank Holiday in July, August and September. This is a friendly bus service, making it easier for locals and visitors to get to attractions and scenery without the need for a car. Moorsbus Community Interest Company and Friends of Moorsbus arrange these services to give access for those who don’t drive, and to try to reduce the pollution, congestion and carbon footprint of access to the National Park. We are all volunteers. The buses are paid for by fundraising, Parish Councils and passenger donations. We are also supported by the North Yorkshire Moors Association. All this pays for about half the bus costs each year, and the rest is covered by fares and bus pass rebate.
“The collection of sports kits and crutches is going very well, a full car load having been delivered to Lansford, who arranges their shipment. The cost of sending one cubic metre is £100. Many of us do not have any sports kits, but maybe we do have a few pounds that could be donated towards the cost.” Cheques should be made out to CTSR and should be sent to Carol Rowsby, 62 Welham Road, Norton, YO17 9DS. Email for more information on churchestogethersr@gmail.com or call 01653 691589
You can help by using the services, and spreading the word. With your help we can expand services for next year. If you want to see unsurpassed views, hop off for a walk, or visit friends and relations, come and join us - you’ll be helping to keep the National Park a special place for all of us and for future generations as well. For service details visit www.moorsbus. org, or send S.A.E to Friends of Moorsbus, 4 Foundry Cottages, Wrelton, Pickering YO18 8PF You can find “Friendsofmoorsbus” on facebook, and @Moorsbus on Twitter. We have a discount scheme too.

The Photograph
By The Pastoral Poet An image of pure innocence, Framed in oak and somewhat dated. A study plain, without pretence. I gazed completely captivated. Two infant sisters side by side, Emanating a childhood charm. Its beauty stirred me deep inside, Yet brought about an inner calm. The elder one -- A favourite aunt. The younger -- Goodbye came too soon. Poignant still the funeral chant, From sorrow no one is immune. Long gone the salty taste of tears, The pain assuaged by passing years. Two loving sisters at one with each other. Siblings in sepia -- The younger, my mother.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

The 210-strong massed choir, among them singers from Malton District Male Voice Choir, at the Lesley Garrett Men of Steel concert in Scunthorpe.
MALTON MEN SHINE IN SELL-OUT LESLEY GARRETT CONCERT Malton District Male Voice Choir is back home facing new singing challenges after lending its voice to a unique concert spectacular with popular soprano Lesley Garrett. About a dozen members of the Malton choir were among 210 singers from seven male voice choirs who sang at the 25th Anniversary Men of Steel concert in
Scunthorpe’s prestigious Baths Hall with guest soloist Lesley Garrett. The popular opera and show soprano described the massed choir as “magnificent”. She brought men from Malton to the front of the stage for a hand-inhand bow during a standing ovation before a capacity audience of more than 1000. Lesley Garrett said the massed choir was one of the best she had ever sung with and added she had enjoyed the experience. She also told choir officials she had wanted to be part of the event to support the local steel industry and help ensure that people keep

In a personal message to the Malton choir before the concert, Lesley Garrett said “I know that the Malton choir are relatively young, just ten years old, but I am sure we will be able to make fabulous music together”. Malton choir Musical Director Vivien Wilcock said “Scunthorpe added greatly to our experience”. Although we are no strangers to singing with other choirs, “this was the first time we have sung with so many at the same time – and in such illustrious company”, she added. The Malton choir is now practising again for a trio of new concerts. It will sing at Sledmere House in September to support Yorkshire Air Ambulance and has also been invited back for a second concert in Cropton in October. WE DIDN’T MAKE IT! Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church If in doubt, talk about the weather! It’s a British pastime, rain or shine we all have an opinion. As I write, summer has struck without warning, no gradual increase in the temperature just; wham! (no not the 80’s duo), glorious hot sunshine. Of course, everyone’s talking about it, we can’t help it, some love it and others hate it. Yet in London on the same day, lightening struck and flash floods caused motorists to abandon their cars. We went camping in Cornwall a few years ago in search of the sun but it rained and rained. Determined to make the most of each day we went out anyway. We crossed an estuary on a local ferry only to find ourselves cut off in a local village. A flash flood had blocked the only road out and the cars queued as they came off the ferry. Gingerly, but successfully the cars in front drove through the flood and then it came to our turn. Guess what, we didn’t make it. I was so embarrassed, although my girls were pleased when members of the local rugby team came to our rescue. I’m reminded of a famous verse, ‘He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous’ So what does the verse mean? Jesus slipped this verse in as an illustration during a talk he gave on the side of a mountain. His topic was loving our neighbours. We should love as our Father in heaven loves us, he taught, unconditionally, uninfluenced by behaviour or merit, just consistent, dependable and full of grace. Perhaps that’s still a lesson for us all?

The school holidays are coming!
T
he holidays for children and young people gives the promise of 6 weeks of fun! For parents or carers it can be much more of a headache – juggling child care, planning and paying for a summer holiday and what to do if it rains and you are all stuck inside together. The number of telephone calls we get after the children go back to school hits a peak in January and September. Lots of people struggle to spend time together when they are used to their day to day routine. Planning for the holidays can make them smoother; Plan early. Don’t leave arrangements for child care until the last minute and try to have a contingency if the plans fall through. If you are going on holiday, plan in advance what you are taking. Give everyone simple tasks to do to get prepared in advance. It’s far less stressful than doing it all the night before! Get the kids involved in household chores. Everyone wants to enjoy the holidays so it’s not fair if all the workload falls onto one person.

When planning days out, make a list of what everyone wants to do and schedule it so that everyone is happy. Having a wish list for both rainy and sunny days is a great way to do things. For long car journeys, find some fun games to play together while you are driving and take plenty of comfort breaks. If you are holidaying with others, make sure you are all aware of what each family wants from the holiday to avoid any tension while you are there. But most of all – plan for fun and laughter!

CLASSIC SHERLOCK HOLMES MYSTERY COMES TO MALTON
F
or their summer production, Nomads Productions are performing the classic Sherlock Holmes mystery ‘The Hound of The Baskervilles’. Of all the Sherlock Holmes stories none has proved as popular as this tale of suspense and superlative detection. Nomads production is a version set in the 1940’s and retains all of the original twists and turns that Conan Doyle put into his brilliantly crafted tale. We see our intrepid hero and his assistant Dr Watson face their most dramatic challenge as they venture onto the wild expanses of Dartmoor to solve the ancient curse which has beset the Baskerville family.
Reviews have called the script ‘A magnificent job of bringing the novel’s characters to life. Great family entertainment’. It should appeal to everyone from 12 upwards and all are guaranteed an enthralling evening of theatre. Nomads had great success with their thriller last summer and this latest production should prove just as appealing. Tom Jennings takes the role of Sherlock Holmes following his fine performance as the villain in Malton and Norton Musical Society’s pantomime earlier this year. Dr Watson is played by Tim Pollard who featured in Nomads production of ‘Neighbourhood Watch’ two years ago. Like that
production, the play is directed by Pat Davis and the two lead performers are supported by a talented cast. The play is at Norton College on the 4th, 5th and 6th August. It begins at 7.30 pm. Tickets are £7.50 and are available from The Milton Rooms Box Office 01654 696240 or at the venue on the night. A show not to be missed!
