elcome to the July edition.
What does July mean for you? BBQs, cricket, village fetes etc. For my family one of the highlights is camping. As a child, I always spent my summer holiday under canvas. The camping fields of Talybont and Barmouth in Wales, along with the canvas ridge tent that leaked along the pole, are ingrained in my memory. The story of our car being towed off a field at Harewood House after a muddy camping weekend and my dad threatening to throw the tent in the bin, vowing never to camp again (we did) is funny now but we were all crying at the time! Despite this we have been taking our family camping since our children were very young! You can’t beat a camp breakfast on a warm sunny morning overlooking the Yorkshire countryside. Finding reasons to spend time outside this July should be easy. Maybe much needed after a month of football! This month’s magazine is packed full of good reasons to get out and about. We have festivals, fetes, summer celebrations, gardens, sporting events, Mad Hatters tea parties, fancy dress parades and ice creams! Rumour has it that there will be lots of cyclists around this month dressed in stretchy multicoloured lycra; and the colour of Yorkshire will be yellow! Do you know the difference between a maillot à pois and maillot jaune? I’m sure many of us will be bemused by all the fuss surrounding the Tour de France but it will be a great showcase for Yorkshire. It will be a fantastic spectacle whether you battle through the crowds to watch the peloton race past or enjoy it at home. Well done to Jean Francis, Westow for winning the May competition. (Answers are on page 88). Until next month…

imon Hewson is a well-known face in the Malton area. Over the last 6 years, Handy Man Hewson has become known amongst his customers for his reliability and craftsmanship. ‘I do most jobs around the home,’ explained Simon. ‘Inside the home, I can help hang doors, fit bathrooms, fix that annoying dripping tap and carry out joinery work. Outside the home, I can build log stores, clean gutters, maintain gardens, repair fencing and install garden gates.’ Simon’s business ethos is being reliable, trustworthy and friendly, while operating an efficient appointment system for most of his work. ‘I have built up a loyal base of customers, and I am always keen to attract new customers. Summertime is a busy time, as garden maintenance is in full swing. Yet there are so many year-round jobs we put off: cleaning the guttering, repairing downpipes, and similar tasks. If people call me when they first notice the problem, it can save them money in the long run.’ With his green and white van, Simon is often seen in the area and being based in Malton, he is happy to travel around the surrounding area, with free estimates available. ‘When the financial crisis hit in 2008, I thought my skills would fill a gap in market,’ concluded Simon. ‘Instead of installing a brand new bathroom, people were maintaining what they already had. And while I can fit a full bathroom suite, it’s nice to know someone can fix that leaking bath tap for a reasonable price!’ For a free estimate call Simon on 01653 699722 or 07708 989281

MACMILLAN CALLS FOR DONATIONS OF TIME TO HELP WITH RYEDALE COLLECTIONS.
M
acmillan Cancer Support are urgently appealing for people to donate some time to help them with their forthcoming annual collections across the Ryedale area to help raise money for people who are affected by cancer. Sally Millington, fundraising manager for Macmillan explains, “We are organising collections over the next few months across Ryedale and we need help to make them a success. If you can spare an hour or two to collect, it really will make a difference and will help us to be able to collect vital funds. In just one hour you can easily collect at least £27 which is the cost of funding a Macmillan nurse for one hour. By donating just one hour of your time, you can help us to raise money which will help us to be able to support more people affected by cancer and their families.”
Cancer is the toughest fight most of us will ever face. But you don’t have to go through it alone. The Macmillan team is with you every step of the way. We rely on donations for 98% of our income which allows us to be able to provide our services such as nurses and grants. Everyone knows someone who has cancer, and our ambition is to reach everyone who has a cancer diagnosis. If you can donate some time to help us with our collection, we will be able to reach more people who need us.” You can help to improve the lives of those affected by cancer. All you need is a smile and Macmillan will provide you with the rest! If you would like to offer your support, please contact Sally Millington on 07801 307058, or email smillington@macmillan.org.uk.

Ryedale StudentS Have Got CHaRity talent! Talented students from Malton School, Norton College and Lady Lumley’s School, Pickering are going head to head in a talent contest in aid of local charity Acorn Community Care. Fifteen acts will battle it out in Malton’s Milton Rooms on Friday July 4th at 7pm to raise money for the charity, which supports adults with learning difficulties from its Norton base. Bands, singers, dancers and comedians will take to the stage and this year’s event. Organised by Councillor Di Keal, the event is being held for a second year following the huge success of last year’s Malton & Norton’s Got Talent. Di said: “Almost as soon as the curtain went down last year people were asking if we could do it all again in 2014 and as the students and audience all seemed to enjoy themselves so much we decided to go for it. “This year Lady Lumley’s are also taking part and the senior students from all three schools have got
Matt Woollens Last years winner together to choose the local charity which will benefit from the night. “I have seen some of the acts who will be appearing from the schools and there are some amazingly talented young people appearing in the show which everyone will enjoy – it would be great to see the Milton Rooms full on the night and raise as much as we can for Acorn Community Care”. The evening will also feature a Grand raffle with some amazing prizes to be won. Tickets are available from all three schools during the school day.

HELMSLEY ANNOUNCES ITS SUMMER CELEBRATION TOWN TO HOST A WEEKEND OF FUN TO MARK YORKSHIRE DAY The Summer Celebration will also be running alongside a Wedding Dress Festival, which will take place in Helmsley’s All Saints Church from Saturday 2nd August until Sunday 10th August. The Festival will display dresses, photos and wedding memorabilia from across the decades. And with a dog ‘bride and groom’ fancy dress competition also taking place, this should definitely be a weekend to remember!
T
he market town of Helmsley has announced it is to host a big summer event to celebrate Yorkshire Day.
Helmsley’s Summer Celebration will run from Friday 1st to Sunday 3rd August, extending Yorkshire Day into an entire weekend of Yorkshire-themed fun. The event will have something for all ages. There will be street theatre and music to keep shoppers entertained as they browse. For the grown ups there will be beer, cider and wine tasting from local producers. Visitors will be encouraged to take the Yorkshire Icon Trail as they walk round the independent shops, cafes, pubs and restaurants, spotting their favourite ‘born and bred’ Yorkshire men and woman hiding round town for the chance to win a prize. Other activities include taking part in the good old Yorkshire tradition of Welly Wanging at the International Centre for Birds of Prey, having a punt at a River Race, and rising to the occasion by entering one of the six classes at the Grand Helmsley Cake Show. Evening events include a family barbecue and Helmsley’s Got Talent, to be held at the Helmsley Arts Centre.
18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Helmsley in Business (HiB) is organising the event. Em Whitfield Brooks, Artistic Director at Helmsley Arts Centre and chair of HiB’s Summer Celebration committee, said: “We’re proud to be living and working in ‘God’s Own County’ and wanted to do something special. So what better than making it a Yorkshire weekend! We’re hoping our Summer Celebration will offer something for everyone. Visitors can come and enjoy a spot of shopping, a bite to eat or a leisurely stroll around our beautiful town, and there will be entertainment round every corner – whether that’s street theatre, food tastings, competitions, a dog dressed up as a bride or a model of Dame Judi Dench!” The local council has also confirmed that visitors to the event will be able to park all day for just £1.50 at Cleveland Way car park on Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd August. To find out more about the event, and to find out when activities are taking place, go to www.visithelmsley.co.uk or follow Helmsley on Facebook www.facebook.com/visithelmsley or @visithelmsley on Twitter.

Top Tips from a dental professional
Orthodontics (Part 1) The dental development of your child goes through 3 phases the Primary, Mixed and Permanent Dentition. Most by Christine Parker parents seek our advice when BDS (GDC 72136) their children are in the mixed dentition (ages 6- 13). Most parental concern is that the teeth look ‘too big’, are twisted, crowded, have spaces or are darker in colour. Firstly teeth often look too large as they start getting the bigger adult teeth from age 6, however they still have their small child’s face. One of the problems for the orthodontist is that your childs face can continue to mature and grow into their late teens, what may appear as a rather crowded mouth at 9 may be perfectly aligned all by itself at 18. When space is short the tooth may twist so it can come through into the available space, again even quite severe twisting can improve as the space available increases. The same applies to gaps. The permanent teeth usually look darker and rougher in texture than the baby teeth, the front teeth may have quite bumpy edges, these are called Mammelons, they tend to wear down as we age. No amount of brushing will make the teeth lighter than their natural shade. If you think your child isn’t brushing properly get them to use disclosing tablets , these will stain any plaque purple or pink and demonstrate where to brush more. Where your dentist suspects a tooth may be missing or out of position they may take an X ray this will usually show if the tooth is present. Where they feel an orthodontic opinion is required they will refer to the local orthodontic clinic. If your child does require orthodontic treatment it is very important that their cleaning is excellent as they can develop cavities and stains on their teeth under the braces. Most orthodontists will not start treatment unless there are no new cavities and the teeth are very clean.

“When You Lose Your Sight You Lose Contact With Things, When You Lose Your Hearing You Lose Contact With People” Good hearing enables us to experience life in a more active, healthier way and with fewer restrictions. Stress is reduced, concentration is improved and relaxation becomes easier – it also makes us feel more confident about ourselves. It plays a huge role in our everyday lives: Good hearing helps us to join in with family and friends on those e special occasions. Good hearing is the key to losing ourselves with music.
Good hearing delivers easy listening to the news on the radio orr relaxing with our favourite soap. Good hearing plays a crucial role in keeping us aware, not feeling isolated and enjoying chatting on the telephone. Good hearing has but one benefit above all others: enhanced quality of life!
Hearing isn’t just about the ability to hear sound; it’s all about keeping in touch. So, if you feel your ears need a little boost give me a call TODAY for a FREE home hearing test... ...and I’ll see what I can do to help.

HEALTH
Make this your healthiest summer yet!
A
fter a wet, slow and sluggish spring that never fully shook off its winter coat, summer is finally here and it’s high time to get healthy and reinvigorated. A LITTLE BIT OF SUN While it is essential that you are sun-sensible and protect your skin using a sun lotion that prevents burning and over-exposure, the sun is not your enemy. We need the sun to survive, and natural sunlight helps our bodies to produce essential vitamin D. Vitamin D helps to maintain strong, healthy bones. Cancer Research UK says that the optimum amount of sun varies from person to person, but they point out that the amount needed to make enough vitamin D is less than the amount that causes tanning or sunburn – so do be careful. Make sure you keep to the shade during peak sunshine (around noon) and reapply sun cream regularly to exposed skin. Drink plenty of water at sips throughout the day. GET OUT AND ABOUT The sun makes everywhere a potential gym. From a walk in the park to a fun run to a bout of hard graft with a fitness trainer, it all works more effectively outside of an artificial environment.
EAT SEASONALLY Eating locally-sourced, seasonal food is not just a TV-chef inspired whim, it’s actually very sensible. In a nutshell, food that has been grown recently and in your own country will be fresher and tastier than food that has been flown in from abroad or kept artificially fresh when it’s actually out-ofseason. If you can’t get out to a market to buy your fruit and veggies, there are now organic fruit and vegetable box schemes all over the country. HEALTHY HOLIDAYS Lounging on the beach is all well and good, but there are brilliant alternatives that combine fun, sun and activities to keep you entertained. For something completely different, check out the volunteering holidays run by the National Trust (www.nationaltrust.org.uk). For a nominal fee, you can stay in the most picturesque settings Britain has to offer, and join with a group to get your hands dirty and your muscles working. You could come away with newly found practical skills, lifelong memories and fewer pounds on the scales.
Walking or running on real terrain gives your body a more thorough work-out than using a treadmill or step-machine.

Paula explained: “The Bowen Technique is a noninvasive treatment which can be carried out even over light clothing! This sounds strange, but the Bowen Technique is a special, rolling manipulation using gentle pressure which can be applied to the soft tissues areas of the back, neck, legs – just about anywhere on the body. “The technique is quite specific, using finger and thumb movements on precise points of the body, together with timed pauses which allow the body to adjust. “The Bowen Technique also includes me leaving the room for a few moments: this allows the client’s mind to adjust to the new balances that have been introduced by the technique. In short, successful use of the Bowen Technique prompts the body to reset, repair and balance itself.” While most areas of the body can be treated by the technique, it is particularly good for lower back pain. Sport players can also benefit from the Bowen Technique. “Clients I have treated so far say it’s like a ‘popping’ sensation as the muscles adjust,” said Paula. “It sounds like a simple technique, yet it is a very skill-orientated treatment which is gentle enough to be used on young children through to elderly clients.”. *Paula is offering a 33% discount on an hour’s Bowen Technique treatment (usual price £30, down to £20 for a 60 minute session). CHOOSING A RESCUE DOG Everyone loves a puppy and yes sometimes we do have puppies to rehome but the majority of our dogs are older. Don’t worry you will soon love your dog just as much as a puppy, seeing the love and relief in their eyes when they realise they have found their forever home will tug at anyone’s heart strings. Knowing you have given a dog their second chance and have made space for the charity to take in yet another dog is so rewarding. The majority of our dogs quickly adapt to their new life with very few problems but we do have the support of a behaviourist who will help you with any initial problems if necessary. While we hope you and your dog will enjoy a long and happy life together we will always take our own dogs back if there is a genuine reason in the future why you cannot keep your dog. We feel it is important to safeguard the future of our dogs and whilst very few dogs are returned, knowing that your beloved pet will be taken care of can be a huge relief. If you feel you could offer a loving home to a rescue dog but would like to have a chat first of all please 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WE ARE WHAT WE EAT. AND THIS GOES FOR OUR FOUR LEGGED FRIENDS TOO!
CANINE HYDROTHERAPY Canine hydrotherapy is a non weight bearing exercise for the rehabilitation of dogs after orthopaedic surgery, for the treatment of arthritis, mobility, neurological conditions, general fitness and weight loss. James explained: “With the help of funding from some ex-servicemen charities, we hope to have the canine hydrotherapy pool fully installed by late summer 2014.
O
peration K9, based in Sherburn, just off the A64, is run by Rebecca Robinson and James Wilkinson, who have 20 years’ experience in handling, retraining and rehabilitating dogs. Rebecca said: “Our aim with Operation K9 is for pet owners to understand the benefits of a good quality food for their companion. We offer natural and organic food with a thorough understanding of allergies affecting our modern day pets. A surprising number of behavioural problems can be associated with feeding the wrong food.” Rebecca’s career includes 12 years as a qualified Veterinary Nurse while James served in the Royal Army Veterinary Corps. During his third tour of Afghanistan, James was injured by an IED, leaving him with life-threatening injuries, meaning he had to leave the Army. Now on the road to recovery, James is focusing his talents on dog nutrition, training and canine hydrotherapy. Rebecca explained: “Like humans, food allergies are common in dogs and cats; we stock CSJ working dog food, which offers a healthier alternative to some of the below-par working dog food on the market. “In short, we believe nutrition is a large part of the care of our pets, and we strive to inform customers as to the importance of choosing the right diet for their dog. And we can also help dog-owners choose the correct toys and training programme for their animals.”
“As far as we know, we are the only hydrotherapy service in the Scarborough and Malton area. After receiving physiotherapy and hydrotherapy myself as a result of my injuries, I hope to turn this lifechanging experience into something positive. Rebecca and James can help with difficult habits, including aggression, separation anxiety, phobias, excessive barking, attention-seeking, inappropriate toileting and similar traits. “We feel that in some ways, it’s an education to the pet owners too,” explained Rebecca. “We work to create a step-by-step plan for clients to follow, and we keep in touch with the clients after we have met them. “Behavioural consultations start at £50 and training sessions start at £25, with sessions lasting from 1.5 to 2.5 hours. We advise on practical handling and training so a pet-owner is on the way to rehabilitating their pet.”

THE OLD CAT’S TALE Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets It’s not my fault I got smelly and old, That my fur is all scurfy, that my breath smells of mould! I really don’t mean to keep wetting the floor, It’s because I keep drinking so very much more. I’ve got ugly and skinny and have a bad gait, I eat all the time but continually lose weight. I sometimes have stragglers stuck to my end I try to keep clean but I struggle to bend. I used to be agile but then I got sore, With age came arthritis in my back, neck and paws I know I’m no fun as I’m sleeping all day, It’s tiring being old and feeling this way. My behaviour has changed, it’s really not right, I forget who you are and sometimes I bite. I forget who I am and it’s really quite scary I’m watching you call me, thinking ‘Who is this Mary?’ Please notice my symptoms they wont go away, But with a trip to the vet it could all be ok. They will tell you it’s common, this getting old, Some tests and some meds, we can help it unfold. Please don’t ignore what’s in front of your face, It’s easy to forget me, but now its a race. With treatment I may have years left, but without it I dread, That it won’t be long before I am dead. Please don’t turn your back on me now, With help and my meds, i’ll improve- its my vow. I’ve given you years of affection you see I’m sorry it’s hard to clean up after me. Station House Vets will listen to us, Decide what is needed without any fuss Nurses run free clinics, test blood pressure too, The vet’s run blood and urine tests while you take a pew. The moral of my story is if you have a pet, That’s old and incontinent, it’s needs must be met. You need to repay their affection, Diagnose, care and provide them protection. 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WHY ADOPT A RYEDALE DOG RESCUE DOG? RDR is run by a dedicated team of genuine dog lovers with many years’ experience owning and rehoming rescue dogs of all breeds, ages and sizes. We rescue our dogs based on temperament, not breed and we commit to taking care of each dog for the rest of their life as we have a nondestruction policy. Every dog is health checked, micro-chipped, neutered and vaccinated by us and we spend time with each dog that we rescue so we get to know them and what sort of home they need. Rescue dogs make fabulous family pets and loyal companions and if you re-home a dog from us we will give you all the help you need with your new addition to the family.
DOGS OF THE MONTH - BETTY & BOBBY Although picked up and taken to the council pound separately by the dog warden it is believed that Bobby and Betty have lived together previously as they greeted each other like long lost friends when they met up. Although Bobby looks to have some grey hairs around his face and muzzle this is actually his natural coat colouring as he has the same ‘roan’ markings on his front legs and paws. He is approximately 8 years old and a typical happy go lucky chocolate labrador. Betty is approximately 6 years old and unfortunately it looks as though she has been used as a money-making breeding machine, the poor girl. She has a lovely temperament and loves to play. With careful exercise and good diet we hope she’ll soon be back to full fitness. Because of their close friendship we would initially be looking for a home where they could stay together.
For more information on the rescue, the dogs we currently have for adoption and how you can help please visit www.ryedaledogrescue.com or join Ryedale Dog Rescue on Facebook. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 37

ELLA...
ON PROCRASTINATION By the time this article is published, all exams will be over and I will be free. That thought is an exceptionally comforting one from my current position – neck-deep and sinking further into a veritable quicksand of notes, textbooks and revision guides. You might have thought that the glittery promise of sunshine and opportunities lying at the end of the long dark exam tunnel would be something to inspire, and spur all us weary students onwards – yet, sadly, the tunnel is guarded by the big friendly monster known as ‘Procrastination’. Procrastination is kind to you, it lets you stay up until 4 in the morning watching entire series of TV shows back to back. It lets you take the morning off, and as many tea breaks as you like, and when it gets to 6pm, Procrastination whispers softly into your ear “It’s a little late to be doing all this hard work now, don’t you think?” It’s really amazing what you can get done with Procrastination on your side. Together, you can easily achieve a spotless bedroom, a really well-exercised dog, and a beautifully ordered sock drawer. Suddenly, the real importance of all of these tasks becomes astoundingly clear, all thanks to your brand new best friend Procrastination. What a team you make!

Of course, the more you put things off, the longer and narrower the tunnel gets, until something that would have been easy if you’d started it a month ago becomes a serious struggle to get through. Despite being more fun than those things you’d really rather not be doing, procrastinating ultimately results in more stress, not less. Nothing can truly be enjoyed if you’ve constantly got that niggling knowledge that you should really be doing something more productive right now.
• Internet Getting best from the • Hardware your co m puter • Software own homein your • PC repairs flexible ho with urs to • Upgrades suit • One-to-one tuition or simply an introduction to your computer… Any issue that prevents you getting the best from your PC/laptop, all sorted in your own home
And the only way to get to the end of that tunnel is to get organised. Sit down with Procrastination, and explain how your time together has been fun, but you’re probably headed in different directions, and right now you need to focus on yourself. It’s hard, but it’s for the best.

aul is an experienced tradesman with nearly 30 years in the business, and is fully qualified and registered with GasSafe.
BEAUTIFUL BATHROOMS
Paul specialises in fitting exquisite bathrooms that will have –as both he and his happy customers put it –the ‘wow’ factor. He said, “I take pains to use the best quality materials from local merchants who I personally trust. When it comes to the supply and installation of a new bathroom, if it wouldn’t be good enough for my house it isn’t good enough for my customers either.” Paul prefers to source all the bathrooms fixtures and fittings himself, so he can guarantee the quality of the finished
bathroom. He works to your budget, advising on how to allocate it sourcing suites and fixtures at the best possible prices and guaranteeing incredible value for money. It’s a completely effortless service for the customer –he’ll project manage everything from start right through to decorating. All you need to do is pick up the phone each evening while work is under way for Paul’s update on how things are progressing. Fans, glass screens or even complex spaces that need a bit more expertise to work with are all part of Paul’s specialties – he has even installed a television into a customer’s bathroom!
ADVICE AND PORTFOLIO OF PREVIOUS WORK
Free consultations and quotes are available to anyone thinking of having a new bathrooms installed. Paul has an extensive

portfolio of images from work he’s completed in the past which as well as giving an idea of what he can do, can also inspire your design ideas.
CENTRAL HEATING
Paul Chaplow Plumbing and Heating specialize in installing heating into new builds or extensions. As well as traditional gas central heating installations, they are also happy to install increasingly-popular under-floor heating.
LEAD WORK SPECIALIST
Lead work on roofs and around windows is most often carried out by leadsmiths –but it was traditionally part of the plumbers’ job, and Paul’s apprenticeship included full training. Loft conversions and roof extensions with dormer windows often benefit from a more intricate type of lead flashing, which Paul can take care of, along with traditional lead bay windows and box gutters.

LIONS’ SCOOTERS KEEP VILLAGERS IN TOUCH
R
yedale Lions Club has come to the rescue of three residents of the Thornton Dale almshouses.
Unable to make the steep mile-long trip to the village from their temporary accommodation on the edge of the village, the Lions club has provided each of them with a mobility scooter while their almshouse homes are refurbished. Margaret Fletcher, Clerk to the Trustees of the Lady Lumley’s Almshouses, said the residents moved a mile away from the centre of Thornton Dale to Hurrell Lane last October - up the steep hill from the village shops and off the bus route. “The scooters have kept 3 of our residents with walking difficulties independent and able to get to the shops on their own. I don’t know what we would have done without them. It’s a wonderful Lions’ service,” said Margaret. Steve Swires, 65, who has osteoarthritis in both knees said, “I tried to walk down into the village once after we moved out but I was in massive pain afterwards. Somebody in the village mentioned the Lions provided scooters and I suggested that we try them. The scooter is a good old bus and climbs the steep hill well. I use it every day to get to the doctors, shops and into the village.” Gill Davies, aged 69 and with arthritis in her legs, said her condition made walking any distance impossible. “I never learnt to drive but my neighbour Dorothy encouraged me to try her scooter. I never thought I would do it. But it’s given me more confidence, a sense of achievement and independence,” said Gill. Dorothy Bell, aged 82, had a virus that left her with a difficulty in walking. She uses her scooter to get to the shops in Thornton Dale. “I always had a car and you have to watch the busy roads. But the scooter has been wonderful,” said Dorothy. Such has been the value of the scooters that they are now thinking of asking to keep them even when they return home in a few months time. Ryedale Lions Club has loaned out mobility scooters for 20 years and there are now more than 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
50 in constant use. Lions member Tim Pickering, of Eastgate, Pickering, runs and maintains the fleet. “It’s amazing what a difference a mobility scooter can make. It’s one of the many ways in which the Lions Club offers help to the community,” said Tim. The scooters are distributed in the north of Ryedale in and around Pickering to Helmsley, subject to availability and taking into account the person’s individual needs and merits. More scooters are also welcomed by the club. Anyone interested in loaning or donating a scooter can contact Tim Pickering on 07771 696175.

ne of the problems we face as financial advisers is a lack of trust and engagement with the general public. Adverse press and mis-selling scandals have unfortunately tarred everyone with the same brush.
over 20,000 IFAs in the UK so to be in the top 0.5% is a big deal. What makes it even more special is that Deb’s clients have gone out of their way to help her achieve this accolade and we’d like to thank them all.
Yet the vast majority of independent financial advisers have their clients’ best interests at heart. Properly effected financial planning can increase your family wealth and protect it from hostile attacks. That’s why I believe we add more value to clients’ lives than any other profession on the planet.
Deb is one of the most competent advisers I’ve had the pleasure of working with. She has empathy and a common sense approach, is easy-going and doesn’t blind clients with financial science and jargon.
We spend a lot of time and effort on obtaining independent accreditation – we are the only financial planners in the region to have both the Chartered Status and British Kit Mark BS8577 – which denote the very highest ethical standards and commitment to client care. Which is why I was delighted that one of our advisers – Deb Jacobs – was named in “The Times” Highest Rated Advisers in the UK. Being a “Times” Top Rated Adviser is a real achievement – there are

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH Nomads Productions have become very adept at producing plays by Yorkshire’s finest playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn and for their main production this year are staging his 2011 offering “Neighbourhood Watch”. The Telegraph called it “timely and provocative” and it is a play that will appeal on many levels. A brother and sister move into a new house where they hope to enjoy a quiet, peaceful life. Unfortunately subsequent events result in them forming a neighbourhood watch scheme that descends into chaos, confusion and a great deal of comedy. As usual Ayckbourn’s play is touched with poignancy and proves to be another of his subtle comic masterpieces. Only Sir Alan could make a garden gnome the cause of all the fast moving, hilarious action. Come along and kick start the Summer Holidays with a really entertains, comic and thoughtprovoking evening. Nomads will be at Norton College on 24th, 25th and 26th July at 7.30pm. Tickets are available from The Milton Rooms, Malton Box Office on 01653 696240.

Since the charity was set up in 2000, the YAA has carried an incredible 5,500 people across the Yorkshire region. A vast array of individuals have benefitted from the YAA, from premature babies to those involved in a road traffic accident. And like any organisation, the YAA requires funds to operate its two aircraft- and to the tune of £9,990 a day, or £3.6m a year! While Yorkshire has some of the UK’s most varied terrain, including remote rural spots and major motorways such as the M62, thanks to its charitable funding, the YAA is so effective, its two helicopters are always 10 - 15 minutes from the most relevant medical treatment centre. And you can get involved with raising funds for the YAA by wearing yellow on July 3rd, which is the day prior to ‘the Grand Depart’. The ‘Yellow Yorkshire’ campaign involves wearing something yellow on July 3rd, and donating £1 to the YAA to help save lives. If you are a business or organisation, you could organise a bigger, ‘yellower’ event! The YAA would love to hear from you, phone number below. But did you know that there are some things the YAA won’t do to raise funds? For example, YAA doesn’t operate any doorknocking procedures, such as door-to-door calls
asking you to sign up to a lottery, textile recycling or requesting regular donations to the YAA via your bank account. The YAA also gets reports of door-knockers who claim to be collecting for the YAA. If this happens, ask for clarity as to which Air Ambulance they are collecting for, and also ask to see their official ID. YAA does operate a very successful recycling scheme, collected through textile recycling bins located throughout the Yorkshire area, in partnership with BIUGroup. Therefore if you get a recycling bag through your letterbox claiming it’s for YAA, this is not the case. YAA does not operate a cold-calling service, nor does it get involved with third party organised charity events. You can still support YAA through regular giving or their lottery by going to the web site or contacting the office. Have you heard of chugging? Well, so has YAA and again it’s not a tactic the charity uses. Chuggers are charity collectors who approach shoppers in town centres and ask them to sign up for donations or join a fundraising scheme. While our volunteers and staff attend countless events throughout the year, they will not be chugging in your nearest high street!
So now you know how to raise funds on July 3rd, and also how not to go about it! Call YAA on 01422 237900.

MOTORING Mercedes-Benz A-Class
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk
Q

@carwriteups undeveloped set up inside and out. But that’s not the case at all. It may well have been the argument when the old model first appeared on our roads. It was upright, careful and dull. It certainly wasn’t a car you’d list as captivating. Nonetheless, it did sell – and that’s because it was affordable – for a Merc – and practical for parents on the rug-rat run desperate to roll up outside the school gates in a Benz.
motor. Take the latest Mercedes-Benz A-Class. Inside, it’s positively palatial.
Then the A-Class was completely re-thought for 2013. It rolled off the production line a totally different car – not just one that had undergone plastic surgery – it was poles apart from the old version.
The German brand is famous for its refinement, but the A-Class is almost the runt of the litter – and therefore you might expect a more

MOTORING CONT. The entry-level Mercedes is now truly enthralling and a machine you want because of its alluring aesthetics. In some ways it’s lost its nononsense practicality because the boot, although conveniently rectangular, is nothing to shout about space-wise. But brush that aside and take a test drive, because the new model will seduce you – especially if you go for the A 200 CDI AMG Sport. This is a real driver’s car and includes a dynamic handling package with sports suspension, perforated disc brakes and cruise control. As well as this, the Merc has athletic body-styling, 18 inch alloy wheels and a silver grille. Additionally, in A 200 CDI guise, it comes with a gutsy turbo diesel

powerhouse. It also has a flatbottomed leather steering wheel, red stitching, sports seats, rain sensors, ambient lighting and a stereo system boy-racers would be jealous of. On the move, the A 200’s oil burner gets you to a respectable speed quickly, if not sensationally. Road holding, however, is phenomenal. Steering is well-weighted and precise, and the six speed gearbox is slick, quick, and easy on your left hand. The A-Class has the vim and vigour that’s required to punch its weight in a highly competitive market.

COOKING SWEET CHILLI COCONUT SKEWERS
Serves4 | Preparation Time: 1 hour | Cooking Time: 20 minutes COCONUT CHILLI SAUCE • 1 tablespoon roughly chopped roasted unsalted peanuts • 1 tablespoon shredded coconut, toasted • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh coriander leaves • 1 bird’s eye chilli, deseeded, finely chopped (optional) • 2 tablespoons sweet chilli sauce
INGREDIENTS: • 165ml can coconut milk • 1 tablespoon brown sugar • 1 tablespoon sweet chilli sauce • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom • 2 garlic cloves, crushed • 1 teaspoon fish sauce • 800g / 1.5lbs beef rump steak, trimmed, cut into 2cm cubes
METHOD • Combine coconut milk, sugar, sweet chilli sauce, cinnamon, cardamom, garlic and fish sauce in a non-metallic bowl. Add beef. Toss to make sure the beef is coated with the marinade. Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, longer if time permits. • To make the coconut chilli sauce combine the peanuts, coconut, coriander, chilli, sweet chilli sauce and 3 teaspoons cold water in a bowl. • Heat a greased barbecue plate or griddle on medium-high heat. Thread beef onto skewers. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 3 to 5 minutes each side or until browned and cooked through. Drizzle with coconut chilli sauce. • Serve with steamed rice, salad and lime wedges.
THE SPICE OF LIFE - FLAX SEED Flax seed is also known as linseed and is one of the oldest fibre crops in the world. It comes in two basic varieties - golden in colour or brown seeds and each type has different uses. Although the brown seed is as edible as the yellow it is more often found in cattle feed and paint whereas the yellow seeds are often used for vegetable oils. Flax seeds are antioxidant-rich and contain a high amount of omega-3 fatty acids. It is believed there are some health benefits to using them in the diet 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
including lowering of cholesterol levels and they are helpful to the cardiovascular system. They’re not an easy seed to add to your diet but they are sometimes put into muffins or breads. They can be purchased either whole or already ground and the pre-ground seed is often preferred as they can be difficult to chew and difficult to grind. Bear in mind, though, that they will have a shorter shelf life than the whole variety. OTHER USES: • Used in edible oils • Ingredient in many wood finishing products • Used in the production of linen Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 8th July

VOICE AND BRASS TEAM UP FOR YORKSHIRE DAY Yorkshire theme or flavour. The concert will be held in Pickering Memorial Hall on Saturday July 19th at 7.30 pm. The idea of a joint concert came out of a chance meeting in 2012 between Malton District Male Voice Choir’s current Musical Director Vivien Wilcock and Pickering band members. Last Christmas Stape Silver Band, founded in 1884, combined with Bulmer Choir and band spokesman Brian Anderson said that “worked well and so a joint concert with the Male Voice Choir seemed like a good idea”.
A
Malton male voice choir and a brass band from Pickering will team up for a unique concert in July to celebrate Yorkshire Day.
Vivien Wilcock said the choir had been “stepping out in all kinds of directions recently and this brass and voice concert is a further way for us to widen our experience and win friends”.
Stape Silver Band is being joined by Malton District Male Voice Choir for the unusual concert featuring instrumental music and songs with a

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

ON YOUR PLOT Start Them Young
I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!
Jobs for July:-
• Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. • Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. • Sow Spring cabbage. • Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). • Remember to feed your tomatoes. • As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. • Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder.
Would you like to see your youngsters spending more time outdoors and get them eating healthy foods too? Then what better idea than to involve the kids in growing their own? While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and

RYEDALE • JULY 2014 • ISSUE 101 methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks? If it is at all possible give children a space that is completely their own on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds - natural pest control! Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are likely to tempt even picky eaters, as are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping
peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!

PERMEABLE PAVING: THE WAY FORWARD W
e’ve heard alot in the news recently about the effects of a changing climate on flooding. You might have seen recently on the news how permeable paving can provide a sustainable solution to water drainage in urban areas. In conventional pavements, rainwater is allowed to run across the surface to gulleys that direct it into pipes, removing it as quickly as possible. Water and pollutants are conveyed into overloaded drains, streams and rivers, leading to floods in extreme conditions. In contrast, SuDs permeable paving addresses both flooding and pollution issues. It has a dual role, acting as a drainage system as well as supporting traffic loads. SuDs allows water to pass through the surface and into the permeable sub-base where it is stored and released slowly, either into the ground, to the next SuDS management stage or to a drainage system. The permeable sub-base aggregate is specifically designed to accommodate water. At the same time, many pollutants are substantially removed and treated within the Suds itself. Give us a call at Sutherland if you’d like advice on using this sustainable drainage system for your driveway and garden.

How to make your business stand out from the crowd Ensuring you have clarity on what makes your business different to everyone else’s is crucial when it comes to marketing and alleviates the need to discount. When marketing your business you need to look at it from both an internal, as well as an external perspective. Internally everyone needs to pull together to deliver against the promises you make to your customers. When you’ve got this right then you can promote this aspect of your business externally. Creating your point of difference is about understanding your unique selling points or USP. A successful USP should be truly unique, exciting to your target market, something that will get people talking, and something that can’t be easily copied. From this you will be able to create a guarantee. To deliver a guarantee effectively you need to be able to manage this internally. For example a tradesperson may give a guarantee stating ‘we guarantee to turn up at the specified time otherwise the chargeout fee is on us’. Internally the systems need to be in place to ensure this happens otherwise it’s going to be costly to the business. If you would like a free document to help you identify your USP’s and Guarantee simply email me mandyhildred@actioncoach.com I guarantee it will dramatically improve your marketing as well as your business.

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
How Eskimos Keep Their Babies Warm Mei-Ling Hopgood
The Jolley-Rogers and the Ghostly Galleon Jonny Duddle
Parenting is a funny business. Everyone has an opinion on how to do things, from potty training to bedtimes - and that is only friends and family. Imagine how many different views on these everyday aspects of a child’s life exist across the world...
Jonny Duddle’s picture books have quickly become modern children’s classics, and this chapter book follows on from ‘The Pirates Next Door’, using familiar characters but offering a longer and more detailed read for that awkward age when picture books are dismissed as ‘babyish’ but longer books are still a little too challenging.
Mei-Ling Hopgood’s fascinating book explores a range of ideas from across the globe, looking at how ‘normal’ practice in one culture may seem unusual, if not downright odd, in another. Hopgood writes from the parent’s perspective, and the book is part social history and part memoir as she tries to apply different strategies with her own daughter. Whilst some of the issues here are familiar to many, from newspaper headlines and popular studies, others are genuinely new and absorbing to the reader. We all know that the French have a reputation for appreciating good food, and Hopgood’s exploration of mealtimes at a French nursery school serve to explain how children come to see food as more than just fuel. However, the ways in which Japanese children are encouraged to work conflicts out for themselves, even if that means coming to blows, and the reality of how and why Kenyan parents manage without pushchairs, are small revelations which lead us to wonder about how we perceive growing up. Hopgood’s style is a mixture of anecdote, example and research, meaning that the book is always readable and is educational in the best of ways - you find out an awful lot, and you don’t always realise how much you are learning. Not a bad way of thinking about teaching children, either... 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Duddle’s illustrations are carefully spaced, so that there are no daunting pages of solid text: there is always at least one line drawing to pull us in. However, the text also does this brilliantly. Picking up the story from where it was left at the end of ‘The Pirates Next Door’, it begins with strange happenings in Dull-On-Sea. Firstly there are some very odd night-time visitors. Then the museum is robbed - and whilst the account of events offered by hapless security guard Arthur Poppycock is garbled, it makes one thing clear: there are pirates involved! Matilda thinks it must be time to contact her best friend Jim-Lad, and he and his family soon set sail for Dull-On-Sea to try to discover exactly what is going on... Short enough for a rainy afternoon read, or long enough to keep younger readers guessing through a week of bedtimes, this is a fabulous little book.

A FUN DAY OUT FOR ALL THE FAMILY!
29 JUNE 2014 - SCAMPSTON PARK, MALTON, YO17 8NG
H
eld each year at Scampston Park, Ryedale, North Yorkshire, the Malton Show now enters its 128th year.
The Malton Agricultural Show is one of North Yorkshire’s premier attractions for the summer, and this year is no exception. There is an excellent display on offer, including; farm produce, livestock, horses, fur & feather, vintage tractors, farmers’ market, trade stands, craft fair, and more. There are numerous events to take part in, including the tug-of-war, a very fun dog show, or the many class events, craft marquee, farmers market and more.
FROM THE PRESIDENT It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this year’s Malton Show the 128th. I have been involved with the Malton Show for around 50 years, starting as an assistant steward amongst the sheep and graduating to Executive Committee member and Vice-Chairman. I have been privileged to have been involved with the Yorkshire Show for about the same time. My personal involvement is a continuation of my family’s; my father and my late wife, Honor, were tremendously active in the Society. It is to Honor’s memory that I am dedicating my President’s Year. The Prest family has farmed at Fryton, just outside Malton, since 1926 when my Grandfather Robert Prest took the tenancy of Cherrygarth from the Castle Howard Estate. In turn my father and I, along with brothers Stephen
and John, ran the business and now my son, Stuart, is in charge. The farm has diversified away from dairying into a specialist arable operation and we are now proud to welcome visitors to our farm holiday business. As with our farm the Malton Show has developed but it remains an Agricultural Show. The introduction of the Regional Sheep Breeders’ Competition, run in conjunction with Driffield, Ryedale and Thornton Dale Shows, is testament to the Society’s continuing support for British Agriculture. I have many, many happy memories of Malton Show and hope that your visit will be just as much fun. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during the day. David Prest President Malton Agricultural Society
FROM THE CHAIRMAN This year the Committee is delighted to welcome David Prest as our President. David has been involved with the Society for over 50 years and hopes to meet as many visitors as possible during the day. We are also proud to acknowledge the long standing support of Les Rickatson who will receive his long-service award from the Yorkshire Agricultural Society later in the year. Our thanks go to our outgoing Secretary Paula Deverell (Fred). We are delighted that she will continue to play a vital role on the Committee. This year we have with us a good number of trade stands as well as the agricultural, equine and horticultural exhibitors who support the Show year-on-year. Their continued support is much appreciated by the Show Committee and visitors alike. We are also proud to be introducing the Regional Sheep Exhibitors’ Championship, a competition at all of our local shows. We believe this is an important development for the regions’ shows and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to agriculture. Don’t forget; you can get lots of information, dates and forms all about Malton Show at www.maltonshow.com

IS SAYING SORRY ENOUGH?
SATURDAY 28th JUNE 2014, 7.30pm
If I did something wrong, my parents said, “Say sorry.” We were the same, we taught our children that however hard it is, you must ‘say sorry’, but is saying sorry going out of fashion? Has it lost its meaning? Is it the last resort? Is it tantamount to admitting liability and therefore should be resisted at all cost, just in case a lawsuit follows? We have all experienced those occasions when saying sorry just doesn’t make a difference; you’re left feeling frustrated with no way to make amends, because saying sorry just isn’t enough.

Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
When I heard David Lowe, who had been a local BBC Radio Broadcaster for 32 years, had said ‘sorry’ but still got the sack, I was angry but it did get me thinking. David Lowe innocently played a 1932 original version of ‘The Sun Has Got His Hat On’ which he didn’t realise featured the ‘N-word.’ A genuine mistake, but one listener complained and even after an unreserved and public apology, David Lowe was asked to leave. He was so traumatised by the whole experience that even when the BBC recognised they had overreacted and offered to reinstate David Lowe, he felt he couldn’t return. Why wasn’t saying sorry enough? Do we not hear or accept apologies anymore? When a genuine mistake is made can’t lessons be learnt and progress made or is the only option to take retribution? Is it surprising that we don’t want to admit to our mistakes if we are unsure of the reaction we may receive? I understand that if a law has been broken and a crime committed then we have stepped over a line and we can expect to pay the consequences. However, when should a mistake be seized as an opportunity to grow, to gain experience and to be better equipped for the future? Perhaps we have lost the culture of forgiveness? Forgiveness offers a second chance and buries the past. Forgiveness recognises an individual’s potential to learn, improve and be equipped for a better future. There are times to hold people to account for their actions but when we miss the opportunity to offer forgiveness, then retribution is the only option left. I don’t want to live in a world where I’m scared to make mistakes. I want to live in a world where forgiveness is available, genuine mistakes become key life lessons and where saying sorry is enough.
