T

his month, as our community and events coordinator, Nicky’s head is in a spin with so much to squeeze in! For Nicky and I, it’s a perk of the job that we have to make it our business to learn about all these events and try out quite a few! So coming our way this summer we have carnivals, music festivals, shows and fetes. And more, there are agricultural shows to enjoy. Summer is not summer without having indulged with a few of these timeless, very British and mildly eccentric events. Where else can you have perfect beans, a truly ludicrously big onion, or perfect blooms competing for ‘best in class’. Then there are the tractors of yesterday alongside today’s high-tech, high-powered creations; and the smell of the catering and beer tents, burgers and sausages, candy floss and ales. Personally, I really like walking around the areas devoted to the pedigree livestock. It’s a real mix of culture, local businesses and local trade. This month we are celebrating 10 years of publishing! 10 years!! In an ever increasing age of digital media, the Handy Mags have taken to Twitter, Facebook and to the web, but the magazines themselves, hard copy in your hand, remain the format people want. We have been able to expand the magazines, both in pages and content, whilst standing by our principles of building stronger communities through helping our local businesses and not-for-profit community groups and charities thrive. We are proud to be ‘keeping it local’, providing a place for businesses and the community to interact, and believe the success of the magazines is based on having done this well. I’d like to thank all of our advertisers and readers who continue to support the Handy Mag – many since right at the beginning! We really appreciate all of the comments we receive; our post is never dull! Here’s to another 10 years!

GET HANDS ON WITH HISTORY

T

he 25th Festival of Archaeology 2015 runs from 11-26 July with over 1,000 events nationwide, organised by museums, heritage organisations, national and countryside parks, universities, local societies, and community archaeologists. Malton Museum is taking part with a series of educational and entertaining talks to showcase Malton’s Roman links. Ever wondered what was it like to be ill as a roman living in a town like Malton? Were there doctors? On 16th July, Dr Nick Summerton will be in the Assembly Room, Yorkersgate, at 7.30pm giving a talk on Roman Medicine and its relevance to modern practice. Dr Summerton is a GP in East Yorkshire, with an interest in Roman Medicine, and has lectured and published books on the subject. This free event promises to be a fascinating introduction for everyone to a little-known aspect of Roman life.

If being outside and getting involved is more your thing, then why not enrol on a Tour of Orchard Fields? Join Dr Rick Jones of Leeds University where he will explain and bring to life the living history of Malton’s Roman Fort and the lives of the soldiers and people who lived and worked there.

20 August Get weaving. Make your own item to take away.

Tours will be held at 10.30am and 2pm on 18th July. Admission is £5 which includes a copy of ‘Roman Malton’.

27 August Medieval Knights and other stuff! Design your own coat of arms and seal.

Malton Museum, an Accredited Museum and a Registered Charity, holds a nationally important collection of Roman artefacts, mainly from the Malton Roman fort and town, and from Langton Villa.

Workshops run from 10am to 12 noon at Subscription Rooms, Yorkersgate.

In pain or anxious? Try Acupuncture

T

raditional Acupuncture can help treat a wide range of ailments, including arthritis, stress, back pain, IBS, headaches, depression, anxiety and many more. Tsering Jones has been practising traditional acupuncture for over 10 years. She saw the benefits of it while practising as a medical doctor and this inspired her to retrain in Traditional Chinese Medicine. She now practices from clinics near Malton, Helmsley and Kirby Moorside. She also teaches Acupuncture at the Northern College of Acupuncture. Traditional acupuncture has been practised for thousands of years in the Far East and is now practised all over the world. More and more people are benefitting from acupuncture which is increasingly being accepted as a recognised

treatment option within standard healthcare. Scientific studies have shown that acupuncture helps ease pain in a wide range of ailments such as migraine, arthritis, back pain, etc. Many people also have regular acupuncture to maintain their health and increase vitality and emotional wellbeing. It is a very gentle treatment involving insertion of very fine needles into various parts of the body. These needles work by stimulating the flow of energy through the body and helps to promote the bodies’ natural healing capability. Tsering says that most people are very surprised by how relaxing the treatment is. A session lasts from 45- 60 mins. Tsering is a member of the British Council of Acupuncture which is the governing body that oversees and guarantees the professional standards of its members.

Contact Tsering Jones on 07876 827 176 to make an appointment at one of her three clinics across the Ryedale area. You can also email her on tsering.jones@btinternet.com Tsering Jones is a member of the British Acupuncture Council and is recognised by most private health insurers.

A GREAT DAY OUT FOR ALL THE FAMILY!

SUNDAY 5TH JULY at SCAMPSTON PARK

T

he Malton Show now enters its 129th year and we are pleased to have with us all the agricultural attractions, farm exhibits and class entries that form the backbone of the show, as well as a few other things to appeal to everyone. The show will be held as usual in Scampston Park, Malton, North Yorkshire.

NEW PRESIDENT... The Malton Agricultural Society is delighted to have Steven Clarke as its new President this year. Steven recently retired after more than 12 years as Chief Executive of Brandsby Agricultural Trading Association - known to everyone as BATA. “I am honoured to be invited to be the Show’s president for 2015 as both Malton Show and BATA have long traditions firmly rooted in the farming and rural community,” says Steven. “The Show’s wonderful setting at Scampston provides an ideal location for the wide range of exhibitors, displays and livestock. Many people put in a great deal of time and effort to put on the Show which provides a great day out for everyone and I really look forward to being there on 5th of July.’’ Alan Tate-Smith, the Chairman of the Society comments: “We are delighted to welcome Steven as our new President for this year. BATA has had a long and successful

working partnership with us at Malton Show and Steven himself has been immensely supportive over the years. He will have his hands full on show day, judging various sections and competitions to include the prestigious best trade stand as well as awarding prizes and engaging with some of the thousands of visitors to the show ground.” Steven is well placed for the new role as he comes from a farming family in Lancashire where his brothers and their families still operate the family farms near Preston.

FROM THE CHAIRMAN I was delighted to accept the job as chairman of the show this year as I’m passionate about this wonderful local event that brings together farmers, children, local businesses and residents, plus visitors from much further afield. The show has been running for 129 years, and with that amount of history and tradition behind it, I am dedicated to ensuring its long term success going forward. Last year I was responsible for redesigning the showground’s new layout which changed the flow and the feel of the day, and feedback was excellent. Building on improvements like this, my objective is to get the show back to its proper, rural, agricultural roots that appeals to not just farmers but families of all ages from all walks of life to come and enjoy. I want to make sure we remain one of North Yorkshire’s best-loved summer attractions.” I’d like to thank our main sponsors BATA Farmers Cooperative this year. Don’t forget; you can get lots of information, dates and forms all about the Show at www.maltonshow.com

Aromatherapy Massage at Gaia Holistix Gaia Holistix help people to help themselves, and one way they can do this is through Aroma Massage. Based in the Ryedale village of Great Barugh, Vivien McGlashan and Paul Crick offer a range of therapies, which also includes Indian Head Massage, Reflexology and many more. Practitioner Vivien combines the beneficial properties of a gentle, full body massage with carefully selected pure essential oils, creating an enjoyable and relaxing natural healing session. Vivien explained: “Aroma massage assists with numerous ailments, as the oils enhance the body’s natural healing processes. “After an initial consultation and allergy check, I then formulate the oils for a bespoke aroma and purpose. We have our base massage oil to which we add two or three essential oils that are suitable for the person and their particular condition. I am also keen that clients like the fragrance of the oils we select, so the

treatment is beneficial and relaxing to all the senses.” Due to the fact the oils are also absorbed through the skin, this treatment is not suitable for women in their first trimester of pregnancy. And if a full body massage isn’t possible, then shorter sessions are available for the head and face, or for a neck, shoulder and back massage. The initial consultation incurs a low-cost of just £5. A 30-minute aroma massage session costs £30. A 60-minute ‘50/50’ aroma massage and reflexology session costs £45. A full-70 minute healing session costs £50. The pure essential oils which Vivien uses in her aroma massage are natural, condensed extracts from flowers, herbs, fruits and other part of plants that are applied to the body during a session.

Vivien’s skilled massage technique along with essential oils stimulates a natural healing process, which in turn promotes physical, mental and emotional well being for the whole person. Vivien said: “When essential oils are blended, they create a synergy, a combined effect which is more powerful than individual oils alone. We only use high quality pure essential oils, ensuring everyone receives the maximum natural healing properties from them.”

DANCING IS THE POETRY OF THE FOOT

S

tuart Moore has clients from all walks of life, all ages, men and women: farmers, brides-to-be, diabetic patients, older ladies, runners and shop workers. He believes there are 4 main reasons why people develop problems with their feet: • a new activity such as taking up running • a new pair of shoes – perhaps for your big day • the job you do - one that maybe requires you standing for long hours • simply getting older and the changes that happen So where do you turn? Well, to someone like Stuart Moore, a foot

health professional. He can treat corns, calluses and cracked heels and is happy to give advice on all foot problems like fungal nail infections. “Fungal nail infections are so common but people might feel embarrassed. They mustn’t be. There is nothing I haven’t seen and there is a lot that can be done”, says Stuart. Stuart’s mantra is – it will take as long as it needs to. If it is a persistent problem, Stuart is committed to getting it sorted until his client is completely happy. Best of all, Stuart will come to you, when it suits you, from the beginning of the working day right through until early evening. A professional who takes his work

seriously and wants to know about the latest and best techniques and approaches in foot health care, Stuart actively takes all the training on offer and he is a member of The Association of Foot Health Practitioners as well as the Open College of Foot Professionals. So, don’t hold back in getting your feet looked at. If you need some relief from any discomfort, or want your feet smartened up, call Stuart. He’s on hand to help fix your feet wherever you are in Ryedale and Scarborough. Call Stuart on 01723 374668 or 07855 190082

THINKING ABOUT AN APPRENTICESHIP?

D

erwent Training Association, based in Malton are starting their campaign to recruit candidates for over 60 apprenticeship vacancies which employers have placed with them. The apprenticeships are in all disciplines of Engineering including Mechanical Manufacturing, Electrical/ Electronic, Maintenance, Fabrication and Welding, CAD Design and Project/Quality Engineering. John Brockett, General Manager of DTA said “At DTA we are currently seeing an unprecedented demand for Engineering Apprentices from local employers. Last year we placed 61 young people in apprenticeships with employers from across the region; from Knaresborough to Bridlington and from Whitby to Riccal. So far this year we have over 60 vacancies and this figure is rising each week. These are all real jobs, with real prospects, an apprentice is paid during their training and once qualified there is the potential for any

apprentice to earn good money and to progress their career in any number of directions”. With an aging skilled workforce approaching retirement age, a buoyant engineering sector, combined with the proposed investment by Siemens in Hull and the Potash Mine in North Yorkshire, the demand for skilled engineers will only continue to increase. By offering apprenticeships, DTA not only open the door to these exciting opportunities, it encourages young people to stay in this area and contribute to the local economy. If you are a young person looking for a change in direction or a school leaver who is considering an engineering apprenticeship or you are unsure about what step to take next, whether you go on to higher education or look for work, contact DTA, they are happy to arrange for individuals or groups to visit them in Malton.

EMILY...

ON SUMMER HOLIDAYS The six week summer holidays have always been my favourite time of year. The two weeks at Easter and Christmas never seemed to suffice, always hinting at the possibility of freedom but always ending before it became a reality. Before you knew it you were back at school with shirts that were miles too big but your mum promised you would grow into and ‘back to school’ stationery deals. That’s where summer always felt different. Six weeks feels like forever when you’re ten years old. More than a month with no school! The possibilities were endless. My memories of summer holidays are stained with sticky ice cream fingers at Scarborough beach, my dad stood proudly at the BBQ or being crammed in the back seat of the car with my two sisters (after the usual fight to decide who would sit in the middle seat) heading off to an unknown destination that seemed impossibly exciting. Summer felt like an adventure. Growing up, your relationship with summer evolves like everything else. Now, to me and teenagers across the country, summer means the end of exams. It means freedom in a more grown up and mature kind of way. A time we can peel the revision posters off the walls, uncurl our spines from where they have been hunched over our desks for months. It means festival season! In Ryedale we are incredibly lucky to live so close to one of the biggest festivals in the UK: Leeds festival. This year will be the third time I have attended, each time I go promising myself never again. But I can never seem to stay away! Leeds is a weekend of a hole in the ground acting as your toilet and maximum of two hours sleep a night, but also music and fun and friends. And of course, lots and lots of mud. Come rain or shine (let’s be honest: usually rain) the summer holidays act as both a full stop and capital letter. A time to say goodbye to the past year, and say hello to something new. nprecedented changes to pensions mean you now have more freedom in how and when you access your pensions. This freedom has been painted as an appealing picture of treating your pension more like a bank account, which might sound very appealing. In reality, it’s not that simple. My admittedly cynical view is that this is a massive tax scam. The more of your pension you access, the more the tax man takes. And by the time you find just how much, it’s too late to undo it. The tax man will already have snaffled a good chunk of your pension and is laughing all the way to the Treasury. It’s been estimated that the extra tax collected as a result of this pensioner rip-off will exceed £4billion by 2020. The government has changed the way it taxes pension benefits both when you’re alive and when you die. Already we are seeing people taking their pensions and coughing up a load of unnecessary tax because they don’t know any better. That’s what the Government is relying on.

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

Here’s what a couple of clients have to say: “Thank you for your invaluable help in sorting out my affairs and for explaining things so clearly and making the whole exercise so straightforward.” Mrs D M, Barmby Moor “If you want to feel totally confident and secure in the knowledge that your personal finances are in expert hands look no further. We know from our own experiences over 35 years Pen-Life are outstanding in all respects.” Mr & Mrs B Western, Knaresborough Even before these changes, most investors were confused and misinformed about pensions. Now, with even more choices available, it’s never been more important to talk about your options with a professional financial adviser. Many pensioners are sleepwalking into a tax trap. WORLD CHANGER Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church People who make a difference inspire me. I am impressed by those who refuse to turn a blind eye. When I learn about people who are unwilling to accept the patterns of the past, or sweep malpractice or injustice under the carpet, I want to know where they get their courage, strength and determination to stand up and fight against the odds. In Hull, on 24 August 1759, a world changer was born. His father was a successful merchant, trading on imported goods from Europe. He had three sisters, but sadly only one of them survived with him into adulthood. He was 8 years old when their father died and when their mother also became ill; he was sent to London to attend boarding school in Putney which he hated. He returned aged 12 to attend Pocklington School and at aged 18, went to Cambridge University. It was here an interest in Politics was ignited and resulted in him entering Parliament at the age of 21 after being successfully elected for Hull.

Time served tradesman with 30 years experience. Advanced City and Guilds.

Do you know who it is? Inspired by his faith in God, he said, ‘God Almighty has set before me two great objects, the suppression of the slave trade and the reformation of manners,’ It was this conviction, and the terrible conditions that the black slaves from Africa had to endure on their way to be sold in the West Indies, that inspired William Wilberforce to tirelessly campaign for the abolition of the slave trade. Slavery had been an acceptable part of society for hundreds of years, but William refused to stay silent any longer.

Prospect Design

William’s reputation grew. His first attempt to pass an Abolition of Slavery bill was in 1789 only to be defeated in parliament by 166 votes to 88. It seemed an impossible mountain had to be climbed to change public opinion but 18 years later, in 1807 the Slave Trade Act was passed with an unexpectedly large margin of 283 votes to 16. He had changed the world; but he hadn’t fulfilled his objective. This Act only made it illegal to trade in slaves; it did not free those who were already in slavery throughout the British Empire. William continued to campaign and in 1833 the Slavery Abolition Act was passed, finally making slavery illegal. Three days later William died, he had achieved his great objective, his work was done.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

CLASSIC CARS JAGUAR XJS By Kit Johnson

O

producing them in 1988 and there was a facelift in June 1991 which, to my eye, made for a much less attractive car so you have a three year window to work with.

My first selection is the Jaguar XJS, launched in 1975 as the replacement to the iconic E Type. The E Type, widely regarded as one of the most beautiful cars ever made, was always going to be a tough act to follow and the controversial styling of the XJS, particularly the “flying buttress” C pillars, did not meet with critical acclaim. Just to add to its woes, the launch coincided with the oil crisis and demand for hugely thirsty V12s fell through the floor. Yet despite all this, the XJS stayed in production for 21 years and over 115,000 examples were sold.

There is a choice of a 5.3 litre V12 or 4.0 litre straight six engines. Either one offers all the performance you need but if the car is not your daily drive, and it shouldn’t be, I’d go for the V12, both for the wonderful noise and the silky refinement. As for the colour, the metallic versions of navy blue and British racing green are best, though red is fine. Cream or oatmeal are the best colours for the upholstery and, naturally, the dash should be walnut. Entry level money for a slightly ratty convertible with reasonable mileage is £6-7k but remember that the minters at the top of the market are going for £20,000 or more. Restoration prices are very reasonable because the parts are cheap and plentiful. Go and treat yourself to a V12 XJS convertible; you won’t regret it for even a second.

nce the province of flat cap wearing “enthusiasts,” classic cars are now hugely popular with prices rocketing upwards. The rarest, most collectible cars are now the province of the super-rich but, if you know what you’re looking for, you can pick up a gem that will provide you with hours of enjoyable motoring and still make you a hefty profit when you sell it on.

In truth they got a whole lot of things right. The styling might have been controversial in the 70s but it has stood the test of time. Long, low and wide with a sculpted bonnet and those iconic 8 sided headlights, the XJS remains sleek, powerful and handsome. It was never conceived as a sports car like the E Type, rather it was meant to be a grand tourer with continent crossing ability and it does the job brilliantly. The magnificent 5.3 litre V12 is arguably the smoothest engine ever made and it produces an endless surge of torque that delivers effortless performance. The XJS, particularly the V12, is eerily quiet and possesses the magic carpet ride that Jaguar used to do so well. The handling is predictable and tenacious, the interior is sumptuous and supremely comfortable and the boot is big enough for a week’s luggage. So which one should you buy? Forget about anything pre 1986; the quality problems will be overwhelming although, thankfully, few of these cars still survive. The next thing to consider is that out of 115,000 cars made, less than 5,000 of them were convertibles. The convertibles have rarity value and this is already being reflected in the price they change hands for; as an investment, they are a much better bet than the coupé. The convertible is also a much better looking car and is far more desirable. Jaguar only started 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

MOORSBUS RIDES AGAIN! The National Park Moorsbus service of 30 years ended in 2013. However, a new but reduced service ran on summer Sundays and Bank Holidays in 2014 after a campaign by Friends of Moorsbus.

On 3rd April 2015, East Yorkshire Motor Services started their Sunday/Bank holiday service Hull to Danby via Beverley and Pickering. The Moorsbus Community Interest Company will run two Sunday buses (operated by Arriva North) from 5th July until the end of September covering Darlington, Teeside, Saltburn, Redcar, Guisborough, Stokesley, Osmotherly, Danby Northallerton, Thirsk, Sutton Bank, Hutton-leHole Kirkbymoorside, Helmsley and Pickering. These services are timed to meet those of other operators (EYMS, Coastliner, Arriva, Stephensons, Esk Valley Hopper, Northern Rail), and we are hoping for some through/shared ticketing to encourage more passengers on to all services. Moorsbus Community Interest Company and Friends of Moorsbus have funded two services for 2015 thanks to passenger donations, Parish Council donations, a donation from the North Yorkshire Moors Association, and the fare box income & pass rebate from 2014.

GARDENING A Stitch In Thyme

importantly, you don’t have to be George Osborne to appreciate the fiscal benefits! Then there is the all-important feel good factor when your Magnolia grown from a seed, flowers for the first time. As a rule of thumb, for the price of a plant from the garden centre you can probably grow hundreds of the same thing from seed. Yes, you will have to nurture your little seedlings through their troublesome teenage tantrums and protect them from all of nature’s dastardly pests, but for any serious gardener that’s all part of the fun and, more

For some people, the whole theatre of raising plants from seed with dinky little trays of specially prepared seed compost, thermostatically controlled propagators is all part of the allure and one which drives the annual seed buying frenzy. If you’re anything like me, you’ll buy a dozen packets, sow a couple and then consign the rest to your “man drawer” as the reality that is life and limited space in the border precludes anything else.

Ryedale Fencing Free Quotes

For a few days this week I’ve been helping process seeds for a company that supplies both small packets for gardeners and also industrial quantities for use in public areas. As part of this work I gave a talk about meadow establishment to an interested group and one of the burning questions at the end was the advantages of using seed mixes as opposed to planting for reasonably large areas of ground. With something like a meadow it makes economic sense to sow, but if you wanted a naturallooking perennial scheme you might want to consider what is a relatively new technique, ‘Stitch’

>> planting. This is where you plant a matrix of structural perennials and grasses throughout the area and then sow in the spaces with a carefully mixed blend of perennials and biennials. This gives a good covering of plants in year 1, followed by even better diplays in years 2 and 3. I also discussed with them the relative merits of using pre-grown plants in turfs. This turf is simply a mixture of either wild or non-native plants together with different proportions of grasses and is supplied in manageble sections. It is quick and relatively easy to lay, you can see what species you are getting and it is fairly forgiving as to the quality of the soil it is laid on. In terms of cost, however, it is much more expensive, but as the plants are perennials you will have a display which gets better every year and will only need cutting back every 6 months. There is obviously a time and a place for both growing from seed and “cheating”. The former will give you a warm glow of satisfaction when you get the first flowers appearing but, equally, for those with no patience and deep pockets, there is the quick fix solution. Personally, I like a bit of ‘stitching’ to keep everyone happy – especially me!

HALF A MILLION

REASONS TO CELEBRATE

T

here are half a million reasons to celebrate the achievements of the picturesque Ryedale village of Foxholes.

After many years of fundraising, and following a successful application to the Big Lottery Reaching Communities Grant, the hard work has paid off with £500,000 towards a brand new Community Hall.

Paint n' Dek Quality Painting & Decorating Clean,Tidy & Reliable Service Covering the Ryedale Area Call for a FREE competitive no obligation quote Telephone Rod on 01751 474754 or 07749883998

Over the last three decades, villagers have looked to replace the current, much loved but dilapidated hall. Dreams will be realised next year when the new Community Hall opens! Keeping it local, the new building will be purpose-built, designed by Evan Ferguson of nearby Helperthorpe. The new build will occupy a half-acre site at the end of Eastfield in the village. And while Foxhole residents can enjoy the facility, nearby villages will also benefit, in particular the very young and very old, being fully accessible, environmentally friendly and socially sustainable. The new building will form a social hub for the area, and will include a reception area, main hall, meeting rooms, kitchen, storage, toilets and car parking for 20 vehicles. There will be separate vehicular and pedestrian entrances, and usable open spaces on either side of the building. With the total cost estimated at around £570,000, the gallant fundraisers have been essential in helping make this project happen. And perhaps the busiest six months so far took place during the first half of 2015, with site surveys, business plans alongside overall controlling the project costs.

3RD RYEDALE FESTIVAL

OF TRADITIONAL JAZZ

19th to 25th July 2015 at Pickering Memorial Hall

A MIDSUMMER MURDER WITH NOMADS PRODUCTIONS Nomads Productions of Malton are taking a break from their recent successful string of comedy productions and are performing an exciting suspense thriller entitled “NIGHTMARE” for this year’s summer production. It is a mystery full of twists and turns with a very dramatic and unexpected twist in the tail. Set in the country residence of an ageing novelist who becomes the centre of an enthralling chain of events which will keep the audience on their toes to the very end. Roger Kay, the director, has brought together a very talented cast who he is sure will put in some very impressive performances. Rehearsals are going very well and he is sure the play will appeal to all those who enjoy a good crime story in the style of the extremely popular TV series “Midsommer Murders”. The evening will be arranged with cabaret style seating and there will be a bar and refreshments. Performances are at Norton College on the 23rd, 24th, 25th July at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7 and will be available from The Milton Rooms Booking Office. You are invited to come along and enjoy an engrossing evening of mystery and suspense.

TICKS – WHAT TO DO AND HOW TO PREVENT THEM! Lucy Nowell MRCVS, Station House Vets

Some animals go through out their lives never picking up a tick whilst others seem to acquire them regularly. There are several species of tick in the UK but Ioxides ricinus is perhaps the most relevant as it can transmit Lymes disease also known as Borrelia burgdorferi. This can cause disease in dogs and humans and occasionally cats (though infected animals would not present a threat to owners). In dogs it can cause lameness and/or muscle pain and occasionally other signs including neurological signs. Cats sometimes pick up a tick more commonly found on hedgehogs. In continental Europe and other parts of the world there are further species of tick which can cause a variety of diseases which makes tick treatment and prevention very worthwhile if you are travelling with your pet. The Ioxides tick feeds only once a year, and have a larval, nymph and adult stage. They are active between march and October . At each stage the tick crawls onto vegetation and seeks a passing host using sensory organs in their front legs, with the adult seeking larger mammals than the nymph and larval form. The tick feeds on the host animals blood before dropping off to develop into the next stage. Disease carrying ticks transmit the infection through their saliva. We notice ticks as small grey nodules attached to our pets skin and if you look carefully you will see the ticks legs. If you find a tick it is worth removing in case it is a disease carrying tick though there areas in the UK where this is more likely. It is important to remove the tick completely including its mouth parts as if these come away your pet may be left with a persitent red swelling. We use a special tick hook which when fitted between the tick and skin and twisted, will lever the tick out intact. Do make an appointment if you are not sure how to remove a tick, the tick removers are

inexpensive and may be worth purchasing. If your pet is at risk of picking up ticks there are a number of products which are effective at killing and some also repel ticks. These are also all effective against fleas and include ‘spot-on’ preparations, a collar and a tablet depending on preference. Owners may prefer a particular preparation because of its duration of effect, whether their pet swims regularly or ease of administration.

DOGS OF THE MONTH:

Teddy and Mindy are approximately 2 years and eighteen months old respectively and although they came to us from different places they have become very good friends while at the kennels and it has been decided that in their interests we need to look for a home for them together. Teddy is a big bundle of fun who doesn’t always know his own size, while Mindy is a quieter, shy young lady who is sometimes apprehensive about new people and situations unless she has Teddy by her side. When Teddy’s around her confidence grows and you really see her shine. They love to run, play and wrestle so a home with lots of secure outside space would be ideal. If you would like to find out ore about this loveable pair or any of the dogs we currently have for adoption please contact 07581 324153.

For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www. ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work fulltime, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. The field of changing colours

By The Pastoral Poet In May a sweep of yellow crepe, Vivid as a peacock’s plume. A beacon midst a verdant scape. The oil-seed rape was in full bloom. Bedazzling was the yellow flame Of showy flowers on parade. Chameleonic, they quick became A sweeping swathe of sombre jade. A sea of tangled green grew fuller, Seed pods formed a crisscross maze. Butterflies seeking brighter colour Seemed lost like island castaways. Then poppies; First with pouting lips, Then later, full mouthed flushed scarlet. Slipping past green fingertips, Familiar like a harlot. Borne on stems lithe and slender, Full heads, with brick red blush, Reaching skyward in pennoned splendour, Reaching; Begging for Monet’s brush.
