W

elcome to our July edition!

It has been a challenge concentrating on work when the weather has been so beautiful. Typical for exam season!

At the Handy Mag, we’re celebrating 12 years of publishing this month. How the time has flown! I’d like to report that our monthly cycle of publishing is now a cinch and we breeze through each edition with coffee and cakes, but with so much happening in the area, and so many businesses needing our help, we are always busy. Life would be boring otherwise – not sure Nicky, Phil and Jared would agree! The world of media is changing rapidly. Whilst digital media provides instant news and updates, print media remains the most trusted source of information according to surveys. I believe that the Handy Mags are the best way to promote businesses, information and events in the area. Over the years we’ve gone from distributing magazines to just 2,500 letterboxes to 50,600 across Ryedale and York, making sure that everyone has access to everything local. We’ve expanded the number of pages and content but the Handy Mags will continue to be the friendly and honest face of local advertising, helping our businesses to thrive, whatever their size, and promoting as many local events and groups as we can squeeze into our pages. I’d like to say a big thank you to all of our brilliant advertisers and all of the community groups who have supported the Handy Mag over the years. With the school summer holidays fast approaching, there is lots to keep those ankle biters entertained! From agricultural shows to carnivals and festivals there is no excuse for staying indoors and staring at four walls.

Open Air Theatre

E

At Ryedale Folk Museum

njoy the atmospheric setting of Ryedale Folk Museum for an evening of familyfriendly, open-air theatre.

Illyria will be bringing two performances to the Museum in Hutton le Hole this summer; The Emperor’s New Clothes on Friday 21st July and Pride and Prejudice on Saturday 5th August. As with so many of Hans Christian Andersen’s stories, beneath the fancy clothes lies something more meaningful, human weaknesses are satirised mercilessly; and a capacity for loving is the highest value. In The Emperor’s New Clothes there are largerthan-life characters, lots and lots to join in with – and an ending that will leave you helpless with laughter! Please note - there is NO nudity in the production. Although one of the actors may be a little chilly...

Illyria’s production of Jane Austen’s glorious social comedy, Pride and Prejudice, has toured throughout the UK and Europe, and achieved nationwide critical acclaim. If your idea of Jane Austen is costume-drama, empirelines and tea-parties, then this sparkling adaptation, based entirely on the original novel, is something to make you change your mind. Bring a picnic and have a ball as the irrepressible Illyria sharpen their claws to bring you Jane Austen at her vibrant, pacy and forthright best! Bring your own seating/rug and there will be a pop-up bar serving drinks and snacks, but feel free to bring your own picnic to enjoy before the performance. There is free car parking, courtesy of the North York Moors National Park. Tickets are available by calling 01751 417367 or visiting www.ryedalefolkmuseum.co.uk/ events

ideal for smokeless zones. Manufacturing to the highest standards for over 50 years, the Worcester brand is synonymous with warmth and reliability you can rely on.

T

hings never stand still at Focus Fireplaces and Stoves. The increasingly popular York based company is expanding and improving in order to offer an even wider range of fireplaces, stoves, interiors and lighting to suit all tastes from the traditional to ultra modern.

Focus also offer the latest range of Reflex 75T gas fires from Stovax, with unbelievable realism. “Enjoying the warmth from a perfect flame behind glass is the ultimate form of relaxation and enjoyment,” says Julian. “Our new range of gas fires offers breathtakingly realistic flame effects that are almost indistinguishable from a real wood burning fire.” Featuring an all-new multi-burner log engine, this designer fire’s captivating realism can be tailored to taste with a broad range of styles and finishes.

“Times are changing, and we are moving forward with new exciting products,“ says MD Julian Somers. “For instance we now believe we can offer our customers the best wood-burning or gas stoves on the market, which tick all the boxes for design, innovation, and user-friendliness.” The company has looked to Scandinavia for these new additions, namely modern and free standing stoves from Jotul and Scan which offer the best of Norwegian and Danish craftsmanship. These timeless products make a link between past and present, a style which fits in with modern interior design, but will withstand short-term trends. Like everything at Focus Fireplaces, these are designconscious pieces which will suit the majority of homes. Likewise, there’s the new Worcester Bosch Greenstyle stove range with clean-burn technology, It’s not just about fires and fireplaces at Focus. The company has recently launched a new interiors showroom including a cutting edge lighting department with new additions from Där – and there’s stylish clocks, mirrors, giftware and furniture. Visitors can see a range of innovative, unusual and exciting products that cross the design spectrum from classical to contemporary, and offer choices for all home interior styles. Focus Fireplaces and Stoves has showrooms off Stockton Lane where you’ll be sure of a warm welcome, helpful advice and the best choice in the area. Answers on page 79

The wood frames and doors can be made from Accoya Wood which has become a phenomenon in the joinery trade for its 50-year timber warranty. Image supplies to the trade and direct to the public, with Accoya being a greatly cost-effective option. Window options include Stormproof, Flush Casement, High Performance, Traditional Casement and Traditional Sliding Sash.

Accoya is a solid product created from fast-growing, responsibly managed forests. It has zero toxicity and provides durability that exceeds even the best

tropical hard woods. It is fast becoming the material of choice for exterior applications and can be used for windows and doors, as well as a variety of others. The exceptional durability and stability mean that Accoya wood requires less maintenance, because paints and stains stay where they belong: on the wood. In fact, test results show that coatings last up to three times as long on Accoya wood – which is why we give a 12-year warranty on the paint. It is also naturally insulating, more durable and stable than other woods. This means windows don’t swell when closed and doors continually open freely. Accoya wood may be opaque, translucent or transparent coated, and its lower maintenance requirements increase its cost effectiveness. The hallmarks of good web design

I

By Rob Davies, It'seeze Ryedale

f your business is going to perform as it should online, you need a website that looks the part.

This month, we take a look at some of the hallmarks of effective web design, and explore how a visually appealing, intelligently designed and easy to use website can benefit your business performance.

1. Clear navigation and the three click rule

People are coming to your website for a reason – and if they can’t find the information they want quickly and easily, they’re likely to go elsewhere. Clear, intuitive navigation is essential, so cut out the clutter, say no thousands of links, and ensure that everything is as clean and simple as possible. Follow the ‘three click rule’ – your visitors should always be able to find the information they need on your site within three clicks.

2. Speed is of the essence

You can have the prettiest website in the world, but if it doesn’t load quickly enough, it’s not performing as it should. The latest stats from Google suggest that your site needs to load within 3 seconds on any device – or you’ll lose out on 40% of potential traffic!

3. The right style to match your business

The visual style, colours and format of your website need to match the nature, personality and tone of your brand – whether that’s professional, elegant, minimalist or creative. Think about your industry, customers, offering and existing branding, and make sure the design of your website reflects this.

4. A purpose for every page

Every page on your website should have a clear purpose – whether that’s selling a particular product,

talking about a service or communicating the benefits of a specific area of your business. When thinking about your sitemap, less is sometimes (often!) more – having pages just for the sake of it will make your website feel cluttered and unfocused, and negate any minor benefits you might get in terms of SEO.

5. Content is king

Great written content is an important part of your web design. No one wants to read a huge essay or wall of text, and too much copy can ruin the visual appeal of your site. The goal of your web copy is to communicate who you are, what your business does and the benefits of doing business with you. Of these three, the benefits is the most essential – focus on what makes you special, and what your customers will get if they choose to come to you.

6. A call to action

Well-designed websites encourage visitors to take a specific action – whether that’s buying products, signing up to a newsletter, calling to make an order, or emailing for further information. Every page needs a strong call to action, encouraging visitors to take the next step - that means making things easy for your web visitors, providing clear contact details, specific encouragement and an easy pathway to engage with your business.

How it’seeze can help

Could your website look better? Is it performing as it should for your business? Don’t compromise your business performance online – get a beautiful, intelligently designed website from it’seeze Web Design Ryedale.

Another leaves this mortal coil. Mark out the consecrated plot. Slice the turf; Spade the soil, Discreetly stow away the spoil. Prise the stubborn stone and clot. The bereaved will come; Summoned by The mournful morrow’s plaintive bell. No solace in the last goodbye, For the lost one, soon to occupy This customary, sunless cell.

The Garden CafE at Scampston Robbie Jameson, the talented new chef at Scampston’s Garden Café has added a fresh and modern twist to a classic menu. ‘There is such great local produce here in Ryedale, so the food we produce is really about letting the ingredients speak for themselves. This Ham Hock salad, made with local ham, packs a punch with flavour – whilst still being a great summer lunch option.’

Ham hock salad FOR THE HAM HOCK • 3 ham hock (shin) • 1 white onion quartered • 4 sticks of celery roughly chopped • 4 carrots roughly chopped • 1 bulb of garlic chopped in half • 4 tablespoons of wholegrain mustard • 4 tablespoons of honey • 4 bay leaves • 3 sprigs of fresh thyme • 100ml of white wine (optional) • Water to fill FOR THE SALAD – SERVES 4 • 400g shredded ham hock • 1 packet of pea shots

• • • • • • • • •

Mixed salad leaves 2 sliced red onion A glug of red wine vinegar 2 tsp of caster sugar Half a cucumber 2 red peppers Balsamic Glaze Honey mustard dressing 1 handful of croutons

TO MAKE THE HAM HOCK: • Put all ingredients into a large stock pot, apart from the honey and mustard and cook for 3 to 4 hours or until shin is falling apart • Strip the meat from the bone and remove the fat • Tear meat into thin strips • Roast the torn meat with honey and mustard for 10 minutes • The stock left over can be used for gravy or frozen. If needed.

TO MAKE THE SALAD: • Cut the red pepper finely and place in a roasting pan. Drizzle with balsamic glaze and roast for 10 minutes. Leave to cool. • Mix the sliced onion with the red wine vinegar and sugar, until the sugar has dissolved and the onion starts to lose its colour • Mix the mixed salad leaves, red onion, cucumber mixed peppers and honey mustard dressing in large bowl • Place on serving plate, top with ham hock, pea shoots and croutons

Ryedale Rose Festival

T

he Ryedale Rose Festival is a major event on the rose exhibitors’ calendar, and is well established at the RV Roger nurseries in Pickering, where more than 50,000 roses of 650 varieties are grown annually. The festival came to the nurseries 5 years ago, and since then, it has gone from strength to strength, with around 1200 visitors over the weekend of last year’s event. The festival showcases the achievements of some of the UK’s top rose exhibitors, as well as being a free rose-filled weekend for the whole family, with live music, refreshments, talks, displays, and demonstrations. RV Roger Ltd is one of the UK’s top rose growers, and hosts this prestigious annual event, incorporating the British Isles Rose Society’s flagship annual show and awards ceremony. According to The Horticultural Trades Association, half of all garden owners grow roses somewhere in their garden, and new ones are developed all the time. This year’s Ryedale Rose Festival will see the launch of the ‘Joe Maiden’ rose, named after the much loved author and radio broadcaster who passed away last year. There will be only a handful of the ‘Joe Maiden’ rose available this season, and these will be auctioned at the festival to raise funds for Joe’s favourite charities. Bidding is expected to be keen! With free entry to everyone, the Ryedale Rose Festival will be a blaze of colour and scent, and a rare chance to see displays by some of the premier rose growers in the UK. Visitors will be able to admire the huge range and diversity of our nation’s favourite flower, and have the opportunity to stroll amongst 50,000 rose bushes in full bloom in the RV Roger rose fields.

The Hidden Language By Mary Mahon

W

hen summer arrives, it doesn’t come alone. It brings with it sunbathing and swimming, ice-creams and barbeques, and best of all, holidays. Yet when we go out exploring the world, we bring back more than just good memories… The English language isn’t quite as English as you’d initially think. Our language system is a synthesis of words borrowed from all over the world; most everyday words that we use originally stemmed from countries through world-wide exploration! Believe it or not, many of us speak fragments of foreign languages without even realising it! Latin has had a colossal influence on European language, giving us a profusion of words. ‘Nice’, ‘lemur’ and ‘addict’ emanated from Latin, yet what did these words originally mean? If you were ‘nice’ in the year 1500, it wouldn’t be good; the complimentary phrase comes from the word ‘nescire’, meaning ignorant! Similarly, in our age there are all forms of addiction, ranging from dangerous ones such as alcohol and drugs, to more harmless addictions like videogames or collectibles. However, regardless of the severity, you are still technically a ‘slave’ through the Latin translation. Most interestingly is the ‘Lemur’, whose nocturnal nature earned it the Latin name ‘spirit of the dead’. If you claim something is a ‘disaster’, did you know you’re really blaming bad planetary positions, with ‘dis’ coming from the Greek ‘bad’, and ‘aster’ meaning ‘star’? Astrological superstitions have significantly impacted our language, even the word ‘lunatic’ (from ‘luna’), relates to the belief that the moons’ cycles cause insanity! Unsettlingly, taking out a ‘mortgage’ in French means you’re making a ‘death pledge’, and if that idea gives you a ‘nightmare’ – be warned! – in Old English the word ‘mare’ refers to a demon attempting to suffocate you in your sleep! Yet perhaps my favourite is the origin of the word ‘tragedy’, which in Greek, loses its morbidity as it means the ‘song of the male goat’. Undeniably, the English language is amazing; every word added to it has an entire unique history behind it, so I believe we should continue to diversify it, through traveling and exploring our Earth.

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

Can Tanzania give us a lesson in our diet?

O

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

n a recent visit to Zanzibar and Tanzania I was able to provide villagers with some diet and oral health advice. Type 2 Diabetes is an emerging problem in this relatively wealthy East African country but the villagers had no previous advice on how changing their diets might reduce their chances of avoiding obesity, diabetes and tooth decay and gum disease. I delivered a short talk on avoiding full sugar coke cola, which apparently has an even higher sugar content than that sold here. I also talked about brushing twice a day instead of just once. We also recommended rinsing their mouths with water before brushing to dislodge food particles as they do not have access to interdental brushes. Because it was the month of Ramadan I was not able to demonstrate tooth brushing on them so I showed them how I would do it. The villagers use a mixture of westernised brushes but they are twice the size of ours and actually do not work very well. The traditional toothbrush stick is also used and is believed to have antibacterial properties. As these are biodegradable and only used for a day or two they may actually be of more use than the modern brushes. The diet of Zanzibar people is high in vegetable starch and fruit sugars which as they are a hard working bunch is not too much of a problem historically, however with the introduction of high sugar and fats from western diets the balance has been tipped with a huge increase in obesity and type 2 diabetes. As there is no treatment locally these people die prematurely in their early forties. It is interesting that the same health problems we suffer in the UK and Europe are introduced with the western style diet perhaps we need to look again at our diets in this country and return to simpler home cooked food.

NOMADS Productions

present 'Night Must Fall' by Emlyn Williams. The fascinating plot slowly unravels and Mrs Bramson’s niece Olivia (Kirsten Russell) becomes fascinated by this complex, charismatic newcomer. He is certainly preferable, she thinks, to her boring gentleman friend Hubert ( Alex Sims).

N

omads Productions have performed some very successful thrillers over the last few years and this August will be performing “Night Must Fall” as another of their series of midsummer murders. The play is a classic of its kind and an exciting, dramatic psychological thriller having been made into two films. The main character Dan (Thomas Jennings) appears at first to be a charming young man but is this charm just superficial? Does a cunning, manipulative personality hide beneath? Mrs Bramson (Claudia Brettle) allows Dan into her life but is she deceived by what may well be his emotional shallowness?

The talented cast also includes Annie Bannister, Melanie Partington and Helen King. Director, Roger Kay, guarantees the audience will have an enthralling evening’s entertainment. So, beware, for soon ‘Night Must Fall’! The play is on at Norton College on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of August at 7.30pm. Tickets are £7.50 from The Milton Rooms Booking Office on 01653 696240.

The health of your skin is important, not only for your appearance, but also because your skin performs so many essential tasks for your body.

How to prepare your skin for a summer tan

Try this head to toe refresher to take your skin out of hibernation: • Exfoliate your skin regularly. • Remove any unwanted hair – it is always advisable to avoid the sun or any heat for at least 48 hours after any hair removal. • Keep your skin hydrated with a good moisturiser • Always use protection with an SPF rating. If you have booked your summer holidays and you find it takes you a while to get a sun tan then the Elemis Tan Accelerator is a must have as part of your pre-holiday skin preparations. This prepares your body for the sun by stimulating the skins natural melanin production. Apply all over the face and body daily for 1-2 weeks prior to going on holiday. Using a Tan Accelerator can sometimes help with heat rash/prickly heat.

A little bit of sunshine on your body is good for you to produce vitamin D but it is always advisable to use a high factor sun cream lotion and to avoid the mid-day sun. Sun bathing is not for everyone so maybe a St. Tropez Spray Tan is a better option. This gives you a flawless tan and can last between 5-10 days. The process takes up to 10 hours to achieve a natural tan and once showered off, your skin will be glowing. To maintain your St. Tropez Spray Tan it is advisable to use a gradual tan moisturiser, this will keep your skin well hydrated and looking sun kissed. A little sunshine has great advantages but it is always advisable to be very sensible in the sun. Enjoy the summer!

Rachel Reeves introduces Yorkshire's First Female MP at Kirkbymoorside Library

O

n Thursday 7th July at 7 pm, the volunteers at Kirkbymooride Library will welcome biographer Rachel Reeves to talk about Alice Bacon as part of the Ryedale Book Festival. Alice Bacon was one of the twentieth-century’s most remarkable female politicians. A primary school teacher born into the heart of the Yorkshire coal industry, she defied the odds in 1945 to be elected the first woman MP for Leeds. As the 50th anniversaries of landmark post-war social legislation - the legalisation of homosexuality and abortion - approach, this is a timely portrait of the pragmatic Labour politician who helped to drive these reforms through as Minister of State. passionate advocate of comprehensive education, Bacon retired in 1970 having played an integral part in the roll-out of comprehensive schools as Minister of Education. Rachel will discuss the legacy Alice left Yorkshire and Great Britain and how she has influenced her political career representing Leeds West. ‘The great strength of Reeves’s biography is how she, painstakingly and at odd moments, movingly brings out what really mattered to Bacon.. fair and scrupulous’ David Kynaston, Observer Copies of the book will be on sale at the event. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

UTSAVAN – A Celebration At the Milton Rooms, Malton Saturday, 15 July at 7.30pm

O

n Saturday evening, 15 July, the Milton Rooms will present a performance with a difference. Three local amateur music groups and a group of young dancers will perform music and dance developed as part of a project with Asian arts organisation Manasamitra.

The project brought together the Harmonia choir with Supriya Nagarajan, one of the most sort-after Carnatic vocalists in the UK, supported by Duncan Chapman, a composer and sound artist. London-based composer Shri Sriram worked with the Swinton Excelsior Band and Thornton le Dale Ukeleles. Shri has composed and written for theatre, dance and Indian feature films. In 2016 Shri won the British Composer of the Year (Wind or Brass Band) Award with the cutting-edge new work ‘Just A Vibration’. A group of young people has been learning ‘Bollywood’-style dance with Chiragi Solanki, who has over 20 years of experience teaching and

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers

lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or

small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Take a break By Revd Rachel Hirst, Rural Dean of Southern Ryedale and vicar of St Peter's Church, Norton

A

t this time of year our minds often turn towards holidays. In our family we usually discuss the next holiday on the journey home from the last one! That rhythm of work, rest and play is really important and taking time out from whatever keeps us busy is good for us. A change of scene, a break from the routine, doing something different has benefits whether we go away or stay at home. Being busy has become very trendy these days. People like to boast that they are too busy and don’t have a spare moment in the day! Perhaps it’s about feeling important or needed. Listen to conversations around you and you will see what I mean. Even children have days packed with activities as well as school and little time just to play. I have recently returned to work from a 3 month sabbatical and it has done me the world of good to stop and rest. To take time out, reflect, listen and do different things. The word sabbatical comes from Sabbath - a day of rest. It’s an important principle for Christians as we remember how God rested on the seventh day after creation. Everyone, whatever their faith, can benefit from a Sabbath rest. That can take many forms depending on circumstances. An hour in the day, a day in the week, a long weekend now and then, a two week break away. We are not made to be on the go constantly and I know many people who become ill and suffer all sorts of problems because they have neglected to take proper and regular rest. So why not stop for a moment and think about your rhythm of work, rest and play. And as another famous chocolate bar catch phrase reminds us take a break!

It's showtime! Does your dog have the waggiest tail or the most appealing eyes? Can they perform a trick or two? Perhaps they are an exceptional biscuit catcher? Why not bring your dog along to Ryedale Dog Rescue’s popular dog show, where there’s classes for all shapes and sizes - and of course the ‘happiest rescue’ class! So, start pampering your pooches and practising those tricks as the show takes place on Sunday 9th July, from 11am at Scampston Park, Malton. The Fun Show is a great family day out with lots of classes, fairground rides, stalls and refreshments - There’s even a sausage eating competition...no human entries for this though! Every penny raised goes to RDR and will be spent on rescuing, rehabilitating and re-homing the dogs in our care.

DOG OF THE MONTH: SANDY Sandy is approximately 12 months old and is a lovely girl. She is very affectionate with people and gets on fine with the other dogs at the kennels. Initially a little timid in new surroundings but her confidence is growing all the time. Her parentage is unknown but possible Dog de Bordeaux cross. if you think you can help this gorgeous girl live a happy life please call us on on 07581 324153 FUNDRAISING EVENTS THIS MONTH… 2nd July - RDR will be running the fun dog show at Malton Show 8th July - Coffee morning, Wells Lane, Malton 9th July - RDR Big Fun Dog Show & Family Fun Day, Scampston Park

For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you)

Providing the best care for your animals By Sarah Hunter BVetMed MRCVS

W

e are pleased to announce that Station House Vets has passed the rigorous assessment by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) known as the Practice Standards Scheme (PSS). This award is voluntary but requires a lot of hard work to ensure that we are working to a high standard and providing the best care for your animals. As the award is voluntary, not all practices will sign up for the scheme, however we feel that by going through the assessment every four years it shows you how dedicated we are to caring for your four-legged friends. There are a range of minimum standards to be met including hygiene, 24-hour emergency cover, staff training, certain types of equipment and cost estimation procedures as well as a range of other specifications. There are different categories to apply for and so we are accredited in three areas: Core Standards, Small Animal General Practice and Equine General Practice, which is the maximum number of categories that we can be accredited in. The RCVS have recently brought out extra awards on top of the Practice Standards Scheme! These awards demonstrate where we have gone above and beyond the stringent standards of accreditation and will be given the title of ‘Good’ or ‘Outstanding’ much like the Ofsted accreditation for schools. These awards will help you to identify where each practice excels and allow you to make a choice based on the skills that are most important to you. Always look for the blue logo when choosing a practice as this indicates that they have passed an independent assessment. If you would like to know more about the Practice Standards Scheme please go to the RCVS website: http://findavet.rcvs.org.uk/ accredited-practices/

Malton in Bloom judging is nearly here...

D

rum rolls at the ready – judging day for Malton in Bloom happens on the 15th July when the judges from Yorkshire in Bloom will descend on Malton to decide how successful the project has been. The Malton in Bloom team have worked tirelessly since January to prepare for the 15th of July and so far everything has gone to plan. Some of you will have seen the team at the Malton Food Lovers Festival and heard about the project but for those of you have not here’s a brief reminder. Malton is entering into the Yorkshire in Bloom competition for the very first time. The ambition is to transform Malton with lots of plants, flowers

INSTALLATIONS

and colour and improve the overall look and feel of our town. Several community groups such as the Malton and Norton WI, the Derwent Diggers, Malton and Norton Tidy Group, Malton and Norton Air Cadets as well as numerous individuals to name but a few have really gotten stuck in digging beds, weeding, planting and watering. So we’d like to ask for your ongoing support – in the run up to the judging on 15th July please help us in picking up any litter, letting us know of any unsightly areas around town which might need some TLC or even volunteering your time – even an hour will help us to achieve our ambition of winning Yorkshire in Bloom. We’re sure you agree Malton has so much to offer and we just want to make it even better. Keen to help us, check us out at www. maltoninbloom.co.uk or contact Christopher Turner at pottingshed@maltoninbloom. co.uk or call him on 07900 227000.
