elcome to the July edition. Half way through 2012 and what a year it is turning out to be! As I write the Jubilee celebrations have just come to an end. We had a fantastic time in the village thanks to a really enthusiastic team of organisers. The afternoon tea and sing-along were great fun along with a village photo for posterity. Well done to everyone who got together to celebrate. Soon we will be in the midst of sporting madness that may drive people to addiction or despair or both. In amongst the sport, we are planning a few short camping trips not too far away. We are privileged top have so many great places to go locally. As a family we particularly enjoy staying at the campsite at Gordale Scar near Malham and try to have a long weekend there every year. Camping comes with its challenges with two large dogs in

tow. Their coats take on a remarkable amount of water resulting in them staying wet for most of the weekend but the main worry in the tent is our food - it is way too available and tempting for the dogs! Sleep is also difficult as our black lab tends to pace around at night time in the tent wimpering. Oh and then there’s the joys of being woken at 5am by an over-enthusiastic dog with a wet nose poking through the small gap in the zip and having to try desperately to stop dog slobber getting onto your sleeping bag! Mmmm a ‘staycation’ is looking much more attractive! Congratulations to Mrs Burley of Broughton for winning the May competition. The answers are on page 62. Until next time...

Good Sport Stories The games this summer are upon us and suddenly the country is sports mad. If the ‘Couch Olympics’ are more your style, then how about getting some fresh air and curling up in a deckchair with some of the best sporting novels around? SeabiScuit: three Men and a racehorSe Laura Hillenbrand This is a classic story of seeing the potential in the underdog. Seabiscuit has wonky legs and a rather pathetic excuse for a tail but three men spot his potential and help shape this remarkable animal’s future. Who better to ride him than a partially-sighted, half-crippled, failed boxer? It’s a master-class in triumph over adversity that sees the men rescue Seabiscuit from a life of obscurity and transform him into the stuff of legends.
Fever Pitch Nick Hornby For football fans and football widows, this semiautobiographical account of what it means to support a team will have you laughing and crying in equal measures. The author Nick Hornby has been obsessed with Arsenal since before he could say ‘up the Gunners’. Bordering on insanity at times, this memoir charts both the pleasure and the unique pain of dedicating your life to following a football team. It’s a brilliantly witty insight into the working of a young man’s mind.
the Legend oF bagger vance: a noveL oF goLF and the gaMe oF LiFe Steven Pressfield
philosophy that ‘golf is a good walk spoiled’ may be inclined to pick up a five-iron after reading this novel. The story proves that with the right support you can achieve anything. A former golfing champion shows up to compete in a 36-hole showdown against two golfing greats. But the local war hero has one secret weapon: his caddie, Bagger Vance.
the SwiMMer John Cheever If you’re more inclined to sprint rather than opt for the marathon then this remarkable short story could be for you. Neddy Merrill and his wife are spending a drunken evening hanging around at a friend’s house in the suburbs. He decides that he’s going to swim home via the neighbours’ suburban pools. At first he’s bursting with youthful energy, spurred on by visiting more and more friends, but towards the end of the story he’s drained and in pain until he finally drags himself back home. The story is a strange mixture of realism and surrealism, playing on ideals of the American dream and what happens when the seasons change to winter and old age catches up with you.
the LoneLineSS oF a Long-diStance runner Alan Sillitoe There’s something so noble about the lone runner, battling the inclement weather like a solitary soldier. This is a story of antiauthoritarianism that will resonate with anyone who ever had to do cross-country running on a wet and windy November morning, in their vest and pants. Set in a reform school, it’s about integrity and going against the system. Stillitoe’s beautiful and moving novel cut an elegant and poised figure in the literary world and inspired a generation.
outSide edge: the Stage PLay Richard Harris We couldn’t cover sports in this country without turning the spotlight on cricket and there’s nothing more quintessentially English than the play Outside Edge. It follows the trials and tribulations of Roger, who’s having trouble putting together a team to face the British Railways Maintenance Division Yeading East. He’s besieged by his club members’ marital problems and hysterical new girlfriends, not to mention his own wife discovering that he’s been ‘playing away’. Make yourself a cricket tea, prepare to laugh out loud…and don’t forget the umbrella!

Cost-effective, professional Architectural Services at Prospect Design
R Richard Webster at Prospect Design can help you turn your home into your dream property.
ichard Webster of Prospect Design is a local architectural technologist, offering a friendly, accessible service for people looking for costeffective solutions to extend, convert or build a new property. Prospect Design offers a full range of Architectural services from a full “conception to completion” architectural design and management service to CAD drafting. Richard can also act as your agent in submitting Planning and Building regulation applications on your behalf taking the stress out of a potentially complicated procedure. Richard Webster established the business at the beginning of 2007 having always wanted to be his own boss. With 8 years’ experience under his belt he felt the time was right time to pass on his skills and expertise to help people plan affordable, achievable building projects. Working with a professional during the early stages of any build will help you to establish a brief that realises a design which not only meets your needs but is viable to build and costeffective too. Taking advantage of a professional’s advice, experience, design skills and knowledge of regulations and industry contacts when considering a building project will save you time and money. Richard explains how he is able to help from the outset, “I can talk through the pro’s and cons of the different decisions that need to be made in terms of design and construction. For example, sketch schemes can be used to illustrate different designs, concepts and solutions. This approach should help you maximise the potential of any projects in terms of adding value to your property and improving the usability and space available in your home.”

By offering potential clients a free, no-obligation consultation prior to any formal quotation Richard can ensure that he really understands what the client is looking for in terms of design and general budget and thus tailor his designs, services and quotation accordingly. Richard provides a fixed price quotation so that you know from the outset what the costs will be. Prospect Design aims to continually improve the service offered to clients. Richard receives regular industry and technical updates so he can advise clients on the most suitable solutions for them. Prospect Design can also offer advice on sustainable “eco friendly” components where possible. Richard strives to deliver the best possible service in terms of advice, experience and value for money. “With a slow housing market and low interest rates limiting investments now could be a great time to invest in your home,” Richard explains. Richard’s excellent record of working with clients and getting projects through the planning process make him a safe bet for getting your building project moving. Short Story
A letter from the Queen “You know, when I was your age I received a letter from the Queen.” Ellen announced to her son in a transparent attempt to impress him. Charlie looked up from the book he was reading; his beautiful eyes were alight. “Wow! Why did the Queen send you a letter?” Ellen squeezed into the armchair next to him. “I drew a picture of the Queen and sent it to her. So she sent me a thank you letter.” “This Queen?” he asked, “this actual Queen we have now?” Charlie let this news sink in for a moment and then asked, “do you think if I drew a picture the Queen would send me a letter as well?” Ellen smiled, “why not Charlie? It’s worth a try isn’t it?” She enjoyed the quiet hour he spent at the dining table, drawing his picture in deep concentration. Once he had finished he proudly presented it to her. “What do you think Mum? I think she’ll like it.” “It’s lovely,” she agreed. “I think any reigning monarch would be delighted with a drawing of themselves fighting a dalek, armed with just a sceptre and a corgi.” “It’s not a sceptre, it’s a sonic screwdriver,” he said, rifling through her purse for the stamps. The next morning on their way to school Charlie posted his picture. After much deliberation he had addressed it to ‘Her Royal 20 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Highness the Queen, care of Buckingham Palace, or Balmoral, if she’s on holiday’. Ellen popped round to see her parents on the way back. Her mum was folding a pile of laundry. “Mum do you remember that letter I had from the Queen?” Her mum chuckled. “That old thing. It took your Dad forever to decide how the Queen would sign her name.” Ellen’s jaw dropped. “Dad? You mean it was really from Dad?” Her mum looked surprised. “Don’t you remember? We’d just exchanged contracts on Sandmere Drive and I suggested you draw a picture for the Queen to keep you quiet while we did the packing.” A memory came back to Ellen of drawing a picture at the little breakfast bar in their first house, surrounded by piles of newspaper and tea chests. Her Mum patted her hand. “Did you never wonder how the Queen knew your change of address?” Ellen let out a heavy sigh and slumped onto the pile of clean washing. “In that case, do you think Dad would mind writing another for me?” The following week Charlie never once mentioned the letter from the Queen, but Ellen noticed that he was always first into the hallway every time he heard the postman clicking open the garden gate.
Then one day, she heard the clatter of the letterbox followed by a little cry of delight. She sighed with relief, and mouthed the words “Thank you Dad”. Charlie came skipping through to the kitchen. “I’ve got post.” His face was beaming. “What is it?” she said, knowing full well. He held up a brown manila envelope. “I don’t know what this is, but it looks like Granddad’s writing.” Ellen’s heart sank. Clearly her son was much smarter than she had been at his age. “But look at this!” he added. Charlie held up another envelope. It was crisp and white with Charlie’s name clearly typed on the front. He placed it in Ellen’s hands with a look of awe on his face. She turned it over. Where it was sealed, embossed in gold, were the lion and the unicorn of the royal coat of arms. by Jackie Brewster

RYEDALE
Thank You Ma’am Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
T
here are times when I’m proud to be British. The music, drama and pageantry throughout the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Celebrations were, in my opinion, outstanding. The Queen’s sixty years of service are worthy of praise and celebration and seemed to inspire our nation to unite and party. However, two words spoken by the Archbishop of Canterbury during the Queen’s Thanksgiving Service at St Paul’s Cathedral challenged me: dedication and joy. To be dedicated today, the Archbishop explained, seems to mean little more than being enthusiastic about something, it has lost its classical and Biblical meaning. He got me thinking! Do you remember the television programme ‘Record Breakers?’ I still remember the theme tune sung by Roy Castle: ‘Dedication, dedication, dedication that’s what you need. If you want to be the best, if you want to beat the rest, dedication’s what you need.’ Record Breakers recorded those making World Record attempts and often showed the sacrifice and commitment people were willing to make to be the best in the world. This was more than enthusiasm; this was commitment at a cost. This was the original meaning of dedication, to be dedicated to something at the expense of other personal goals and ambitions. It was this type of dedication the Archbishop commended the Queen for. The Queen, throughout her life, had willingly sacrificed any personal goals, to fulfil a role of service to our Nation and to the Commonwealth. Yet the Archbishop went further, he said that through the Queen’s dedication to service she had found ‘joy’. It was this that caught my attention. It was a reminder that joy could be found when we fulfil our personal dreams and aspirations, but ultimate lasting joy is only found when we are willing to lay down our goals and become dedicated to serving others. The Bible passage read by the Prime Minister, David Cameron (Romans 12:1-18), encourages us to be transformed and our minds to be renewed, in other words, to learn to act and think differently. Just imagine how our families, communities and nation would be transformed if we all found our lasting joy through being dedicated to serve others above serving ourselves? Thank you Ma’am for dedicating your life to serving others and for demonstrating that, in serving others, we can find lasting joy. I hope your example inspires us, our families, our communities and our Nation to do the same. Building teams for success: We’re better together!
A
s the sport will demonstrate this month, teamwork is the crucial factor when it comes to getting any kind of project designed, planned, and completed successfully. There’s nothing worse than trying to co-ordinate joiners, electricians, groundworkers and builders who don’t know each other, don’t work together, and don’t communicate. Dean Olley and his business partner Thomas Bothamley, of new building company Image Developments, together with Brian Swales, owner of Swales Paving, understand this completely. That’s why they’ve set up a team of every possible tradesman and craftsman a building project could require. And what’s more, they’re all good friends, which means their customers can count on the efficient, quality and timely work that results when people work together as a team. Since joining forces, Image Developments and Swales Paving have worked on dozens of domestic projects, from putting up a fence to building new houses from scratch. Their new builds don’t just stop at the building, either

building an extension with four new changing rooms and a shower block – and working on new car parking spaces and landscaping outside, too. They’re also building a new house in Sand Hutton, which incorporates eco-features including rainwater harvesting, air and groundsource plumbing plus extensive landscaping and a large driveway. Brian said: “We all have the same attitude and we do take a lot of pride in our work. We know that a happy customer always leads to another customer – almost all of our work comes from word of mouth.”
Image Developments
Thomas Bothamley and Dean Olley set up Image Developments (Northern) Ltd seven months ago. Dean is a trained quantity surveyor and project manager and Thomas is an experienced joinery and project manager. They’re expansion means that they can offer a more comprehensive service to their customers. Using their contacts in the area, they put together a team of plumbers, joiners, electricians and plasterers who together can do any project from clearing the site ahead of beginning work, right through to completion. As well as working on homes, sports clubs and the refurbishment of the New Mount Hotel in Malton, they’ve carried out a lot of work as shop fitters in and around London. There will be more information on their new website which is coming soon.
Swales Groundworks & Paving

The brutal battle between commercialism and compassion
Let me tell you a story which illustrates how proper financial planning can make a massive difference to someone’s life. Back in 2007, I was introduced to an elderly client – let’s call him Don (because that’s his name!) Don’s done his bit for his Country – serving in the parachute regiment in World War II and then in the Police Force. After his wife died he decided to sell his house and move into a residential care facility for ex-servicemen on the South Coast (to be near his family). I arranged Don’s finances such that he will be able to stay in the Care Home for the rest of his life, regardless of how long he lives. Don and I have become good friends over the years, and I went to see him for his annual review a few weeks ago. He was reasonably healthy and contented but I knew something was worrying him. He was upset because his friend Bill, who had moved into the care home at much the same time as him, was having to move to a Local Authority care home because he had run out of money and could no longer pay the fees. What’s really sad about this story is that Don and Bill’s financial situation was much the same when they moved into the care home. But Bill has just been using his capital to pay for the care home, and now it’s gone. On the other hand, we put a plan in place for Don which provides sufficient income to pay the care home fees for the rest of his life, and provide a legacy for his children when he’s gone. As a member of the Society of Later Life Advisers, I specialise in advising clients worried about the effect of paying for care and/or Inheritance Tax. If you are concerned about this, just taking half an hour to chat with us could give you an understanding of the issues facing clients in later life, and, more importantly, what you can do about it. YOUR Computer Problems

N
ot everyone can afford the latest Microsoft Windows 7 PC or Apple Mac and not everyone needs the speed they give to everything. Many people want something that can Tux - The Linux Penguin surf the web, let them email people and do ‘a few other things every now and again’ – all faster and with less crashing/freezing than their current system. For a number of years there has been an alternative to Windows and Mac OS called Linux. There are a number of providers for this but the one I have used most often is Ubuntu. It’s free and has become easier to install, use and maintain. By default, it uses Mozilla Firefox as its Internet browser which will be familiar to people who use this on their PCs in preference to Internet Explorer. Evolution is an easy to use email and calendar program or you can use MozillaThunderbird instead and LibreOffice, also available for windows, offers the word-processing and spread-sheeting experience. My test machine is a 5 year old Lenovo running a CoreDuo 1.8Ghz dual processor and 2GB RAM. With Internet Security and all the rubbish I had installed and uninstalled on this Windows XP machine it took over 5 minutes to start-up although it ‘wasn’t too bad’ once it was ready. The same machine has been transformed by Linux. Less than a minute to start and fast response times when browsing, etc. I have no internet security installed to be fair and, although ubuntu is more secure, there are still benefits to having some added protection. Ubuntu can be downloaded from www. ubuntu.com and burnt to a CD. You can then run it from the CD to decide if you like it – be aware that it will be slower running from the CD rather than the PC disk – then you can install it instead of, or alongside, your current windows system if there’s room on the disk. It will even copy your documents and photos across if you choose. As always, make sure you have backed up everything important before you start.

A vision of success
S
pecsavers in Malton is celebrating its tenth anniversary after first opening its doors on 24th June 2002.
From day 1 the business has been owned and managed by local optometrist Louise Knock and dispensing optician Josie Matthews. “We are delighted to have achieved this milestone,” says Josie. “We would like to thank all of our staff and customers who have supported us here in Malton over the past 10 years. The business has gone from strength to strength due to the loyalty of our much valued customers.” The business ethos has always been to provide a professional and friendly service in store, with great prices, promotions and advertising of the Specsavers brand. The range of services available includes eye tests with free retinal photography, contact lenses and hearing tests. “We work in partnership with our customers to help maintain long term healthy eyes” says Josie. “Using the latest technology, such as our free retinal photography with eye tests, not only helps us to closely monitor your eye health but can also spot a range of other conditions including diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and more.” The store has grown over the years from providing just 3 eye test clinics per week with 3 members of staff to 8 clinics per week and 12 members of staff! The team comprises 2 dispensing opticians, optical assistants manning the shop floor, and lab technicians. Choosing your glasses is a big decision - they need to feel right and look right and they are usually worn for 2 years so it’s important to have knowledgeable, helpful experts on hand with experience and advice. This is where the well trained and friendly optical assistants at Specsavers Malton excel. In June this year the team proudly won the Specsavers Mystery Shopper Award for excellence in customer service. They were assessed by a mystery shopper on the friendliness of staff, whether they offered help and whether they made good suggestions. There is also the value for money expected of a national brand and glasses are available in store from just £25 including single vision plastic hardcoated lenses. Promotions, including their 2 for 1 offer, apply to glasses purchased from the £69 range or above, and a range of designer glasses from £99

means that even the most discerning of customers can leave with a pair of glasses they can be satisfied with. Designer glasses available in store include Gok Wan, Red or Dead and French Connection (all £99) and Karen Millen, Missoni, Timberland, Quiksilver and Jasper Conran (all £125). Certain single vision glasses can be made in 1 hour if required in the onsite glazing lab which means that customers can leave the shop wearing their new glasses. Josie said: “It has been an enjoyable 10 years of very hard work but we have had the satisfaction of watching the business grow and seeing customers return year on year making it all worthwhile.” Along with the usual £10 eye test voucher in the Handy Mag, to celebrate their anniversary, Specsavers Malton are offering 25% off glasses until 14th July 2012 and also a chance to win one of 10 pairs of designer glasses! See the advert opposite for details of how to enter. Well peeps, The sun is shining as I write, the birds are singing and the dark nights are nothing but a distant memory. It’s summer time. How long it will last no one knows, so let’s make the most of it while it is here. If it is making you feel like a holiday then let me help. It won’t be long before schools are finishing for another year and the children will be home for a whole six weeks. If you are planning on taking them away but have nothing booked yet then here is a little inspiration. UK based: The current economic downturn is such a bore but at least it has given me the opportunity to go out and about around the UK finding some fabulous places to stay. The historic coastline of Northumberland is one of my favourite places. You can stay at a 5-Star Park set amongst woodlands and lakes and just 7 miles from the beach. There’s plenty to keep you occupied including spa treatment rooms, a boating lake and boat hire and a par 27 9-hole golf course. There’s even luxury lodges. Prices start from £650 per week or £300 for 3 nights. Europe: If you are unsure which part of Europe you would like to go to and prices are sky high, how about taking to the seas. You say ”not with children” but I say “yes with children”! Kids clubs, entertainment all day, climbing walls, ice skating rinks, surf machines, food 24 hours a day! What more could your little darlings want? You can then enjoy the pleasures of seeing Europe in luxury. Facilities vary from ship to ship, but are all amazing. Prices start from £469 pp for a 7 night Mediterranean cruise Far & Away: Fabulous beaches, fabulous warm seas, fabulous tropical temperatures and luxury hotels are my idea of a holiday in heaven. Why not try Dubai which has everything from water sports to dune 4x4 safaris, tax free shopping and indoor ski slopes. A fabulously wonderful experience for you and your family! Prices start from £569 pp. I hope this has given you a little bit of inspiration, and remember whatever you do during the holidays, make sure you have fun, and be safe. xx 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Emily’s Column Hello again, For most students, the summer holidays bring the promise of a break from mindnumbing essays and the opportunity to feel the warm sand between your toes. It’s enough to get anybody excited! For me – and for the majority of other Year 11s - with the final exam and school prom out of the way, I am free to enjoy possibly the longest holiday of my life! Most people’s idea of a good day at the coast is blistering heat and a soft towel to lie on, day-long, with a too-small bikini and oversized sunglasses; going red! Right? Not me. I can’t wait to load up the car with the rounders gear, drag the skim-board out of the loft and take Kevin-the-Kayak down to the local beach. In my opinion, there is no better way to spend a sunny (or wet!) day than messing around with my family off Bridlington coast. Even my Dad puts on his wetsuit and comes body-boarding with us – although he usually gives up soon after repeatedly getting beaten by all three teenage daughters! Beach days shouldn’t only be a chance to strut around in your £75 designer bikini, nor are they an opportunity to show off your new (and probably very orange) fake tan... Because truthfully, having splodges of different colours scattered over your body is not a good look, especially with those white patches between your fingers and toes - weird! Where is the logic in dying your legs various streaky shades of brown and orange just so that you can go and lie on the beach to get an all over natural tan? It’s not for me. Frankly I’d rather look pale! So pack up your beach gear and get down to your local beach for a bit of beach fun in the sun. How better a way to flit away those ‘Summer Days’. I’ll tell you more next time....
See you next month,

Learning to heal the Gaia-Now way With Vivien and Paul at Gaia Holistix
A
s well as offering various forms of massage and Reflexology, Vivien and Paul also use the Gaia-Now transformational healing and personal development modality to heal people. They also teach people how to heal at their Gaia Holistix practice. Healing is something which is often not clearly defined; making it difficult for most people to understand. Gaia-Now healing deals with the whole person and is transforming the lives of those who have chosen to receive or learn it. Paul and Vivien believe that the basics of healing are something which everyone should consider learning. Gaia-Now healing and personal development is about creating inner wholeness and harmony so that people can reach their maximum potentiality. A good analogy to our inner harmony is likened to a country - whilst everyone is moving in the same direction and living and working together then the whole country profits from that inner harmony, but when some of the population start to create divisions within the country for whatever reason, then the country will start to suffer. It might only be in one area to start with, but unless inner harmony is restored, then it will inevitably spread to affect the majority of the country and everyone will start to suffer. It is the same with us. People do not need to be special or the seventh son of a seventh son in order to learn how to heal! Healing is a practical skill which can be learnt much the same as we learn everything else; all that someone requires is an open mind, a willingness to learn how to heal and someone who is well versed and skilled at healing and is willing to share their healing skills and understanding with you. Our general state of health and wellbeing is a direct reflection of our underlying state of consciousness. The Gaia-Now modality was founded by Paul in 2003 to de-mystify healing and to help people to become healed and transformed or to learn how to transform themselves and through that their lives. It does what it was designed to do in a practical down to earth way that can be learnt by anyone. The Introductory Workshops are aimed at everyone irrespective of whether they have previously learnt any healing skills or not. Paul and Vivien also run Practitioner courses for those who have attended the Introductory Workshop and would like to learn how to apply trans-
formational healing and personal development to self and others. They teach the Gaia-Now modality as a personal resource which gives people the tools and insight that will help them to maintain inner harmony and reach their own creative potentiality.
The next Gaia-Now Introductory Workshops are to be held on Saturday 30th June and 4th August 2012, starting at 10am until 5pm. A light lunch and a 50 page manual is included in the workshop fee of £175.00; full details are available online at www.school.gaiaholistix.co.uk

fter all those weeks in early summer when it seemed unable to stop raining, many plants will have been lulled into a false sense of security. And those of us who look after the plants are also likely to have become a little too used to not worrying about what and how to water to best effect, and how to minimise the effects of dry weather. So if you’re now finding yourself battling with the effects of a more text-book summer, here are my tips for coping: Mulching really does help to keep the moisture in the soil. It’s important to make sure the soil is really well watered BEFORE you apply the mulch, so water well or wait until after there has been a heavy rainfall. Then around the area, covering the roots of the plant (or preferably a bit further) shovel on well-
HOMES & GARDENS rotted manure, composted bark or garden compost. Don’t forget that vegetables as well as flowers benefit from mulching. A slow but steady supply of water is generally more use and more appreciated by plants than intermittent heavy drenching. Newly planted trees and shrubs establish better and suffer drought stress less if the soil is never allowed to dry out completely. Installing some perforated or permeable pipe beneath the soil surface or on the surface but beneath the mulch provides just what they need. If you’re making any new plantings for the patio right now, don’t risk them becoming drought stressed before their moment of autumn or winter glory comes. When planting up late season patio pots, decrease the effects of the summer sun by lining the insides of the pot with bubble-wrap polythene. When you do need to use extra water on your garden,

try to apply it in the evening or otherwise as early as you can in the morning. Less will be lost by evaporation and there will also be less likelihood of plants suffering scorching. However much you’ve taken a fancy to a gorgeous looking plant in your local garden centre, don’t buy it right now. In hot, dry conditions it is much harder for a plant to become established and much more likely that it’ll suffer stress. A bit of temporary shading, perhaps in the form of some shade netting (available from garden centres) or some large, leafy branches driven in to the soil, will help to keep things a little cooler during the hotter weather. It may not look great, but it could save you a packet in replacing plants. Vegetable plants can be covered with netted cloches (like the Giant Easy Net Tunnels available from my website) to achieve the same effect – and these will also help to keep off continued over...

RYEDALE many potential pests too. Siphoning water out from the bath is a great way to re-use domestic water. The usual tiny quantities of soap or bubble bath used by most of us won’t cause any problems with plants and makes a great drink for trees, shrubs, flowers and vegetables. Remember that some plants are more tolerant of dry conditions than others, so next time you do shop for plants, it may be worth bearing this in mind. On the whole, plants with silvery or densely hairy leaves are pretty drought tolerant, as are those whose names imply that they are of Mediterranean origin. Some of my favourite drought-resisters include: Convolvulus cneorum – stunning silvery leaves and miniature white flowers, often with a touch of pink, which resemble those of morning glories. Rosemary – this shrub has great purple flowers and wonderfully aromatic foliage, perfect for cooking, and when mature many people use the wood to make barbeque skewers which are said to impart a delightful rosemary aroma to the meat. Senecio maritima – a pretty divided leafed plant with dense hair on the leaves making it look silvery. Gazanias – with their large orange, brown and burgundy flowers and silvered leaves, they look a treat in patio pots of summer borders. Lavenders – aromatic leaves and perfumed blue, lilac purple or white flower spikes, this cottage garden favourite is also a magnet for bees. Geraniums and their cousins, Pelargoniums, are both very drought resistant, and come with foliage that is often attractively marked and pretty flowers. Pelargoniums, usually the more flamboyantly coloured of the two, are not hardy but great in summer containers and the herbaceous geraniums should last for years.

I
n the glory days, Peugeot shifted 7.7 million 206s and the iconic 205 before that found 5.2 million homes.
The lacklustre 207 however never caught buyers’ imaginations - flopping with just 2.3 million shifted during its lifecycle. Now the French firm is hoping the all new 208 can bring back the glory days and sales success to its dealers once again. However, things are a lot tougher these days. Back in 2001, there were just 16 rivals in the B segment in which the 200 series models compete. Fast forward ten years and now there are 27 direct rivals vying for car buyers’ cash. But Peugeot hopes its new challenger can tackle the market leading Ford Fiesta head on. Aimed squarely at the sector sales leaders, the French firm hopes cute looks, competitive pricing and higher spec than rivals will be enough to tempt buyers to turn French. Sales of the 208 will ultimately make up a third of Peugeot dealers’ volume too, and in 2013 the firm hopes to 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
shift 45,000 units, so there’s some serious weight on this little hatch’s shoulders. But is it any good? Well, yes and no. Firstly there’s an impressive choice of engines. There are five petrol units and five diesels to choose from and with sales expected to be split 50/50 between the fuel types that comes as little surprise. We tried the petrol 1.6-litre 155bhp, diesel 1.6-litre HDI with 115bhp, and the 1.2-litre three cylinder petrol. The diesel was excellent, but our pick has to be the characterful 1.2-litre with 82bhp and 118Nm of torque. It’s both great fun to drive yet economical too, returning 62.7mpg on the combined cycle and emitting just 104g/ km. On the road it’s really rather good. Dynamically it’s composed and even in the lesser powered models it’s good fun to chuck around bends. The ride quality is impressive, but we did find the steering very light in town. The driving position is also strange with a tiny steering wheel that’s hard to position without obscuring the clocks. Overall, though, it drives like a little French hatch back should
do - and we mean that in a positive way! The sales clincher is really on the spec sheets. Peugeot has aimed for all trim levels to be just that little bit better than Fiesta - and in this market that’s vital. The most popular trim, taking 40 per cent of sales, will be the Active. As standard on this model you have that all important air con, a touchscreen display, 15-inch alloys, cruise control, Bluetooth with audio streaming and USB. There are plenty of options too, notably sat nav, which unfortunately is a little fiddly to use. Overall, we can’t help but like the 208 and it’s clear there’s a very good car in there waiting to escape (that’ll be the GTI). However, the design is a little fussy inside and out and the Ford Fiesta is a well established and popular rival. Priced from £9,995, the new 208 goes head to head with key rivals from Ford and Vauxhall. However, it remains to be seen whether its funky new looks and tech advances will be enough to bring the glory days back to Peugeot once again.

Summer pet ownership
W
ith the summer months finally upon us, and some warmer weather too, its time to give a little consideration to some practical aspects of pet ownership at this time of year.
Sunshine is a wonderful thing, we all enjoy spending more time outdoors and the longer days make everything seem a little better. However, too much time in the sun with no protection from its rays can be detrimental to cats in similar ways it can be for us. The cats that are most prone to these problems are those with white ear tips. If these areas get repeatedly burnt by the sun over long periods of time then they can get cancerous changes similar to the changes we would see in moles on our skin, which often necessitates surgery to remove the ear tips. There are ways to protect cats from developing this problem, ideally we would all keep our cats out of the sun when its at its hottest, but as we all know, this isn’t always practical! The other solution is to apply suncream to the ear tips of your cat to give them protection, total sunblock is the best option for this. When out and about enjoying the sunshine, we also need to make sure our canine companions aren’t getting too hot. Dogs can suffer from heatstroke too, so if you’re out for a long walk then make sure you take plenty of water for your dog with you and try to make sure they have a chance to rest and cool down when you do. The golden rule in summer is definitely NEVER, EVER leave your dog in the car when its hot, its surprising how little heat there has to be in the day for it to cause serious problems for your dog and tragically every year there are dogs affected and fatalities do occur. Dogs don’t have the same abilities as we do to dissipate heat from their bodies and so can overheat much more quickly than you or I, this is one of those situations where it is much better to be safe than sorry. We all love the warmer weather, but unfortunately so do those pesky little fleas and ticks. The increase in temperature is perfect for their breeding cycles and so we need to be extra vigilant in our preventative treatments. If you do find a tick on your dog, it is important to remove it as soon as possible as they can carry Lymes disease, but you also need to make sure its removed properly and that the mouth parts aren’t left in the skin. Tick removers are a clever little tool and make removal very easy, they can be bought over the counter from the practice. Bees and wasps are also an ever present threat at this time of year and can not only be quite painful when they do sting but some dogs will also get an allergic reaction to the sting itself. If this happens then the dog will usually need prompt veterinary attention, especially if they seem unwell. 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
by Nicola Vincent BVSc MRCVS, Station House Vets
If you have a dog that loves running through long grass then its worth keeping an eye out for grass seeds at this time of year, especially if they have feathery feet. Grass seeds can burrow into the skin between the toes or get down ear canals and can cause a lot of problems if not retrieved quickly enough. Check your dogs feet when you get back from a walk and if you see any signs of swellings or problems then get it checked by a vet. With a little care and awareness of the major concerns at this time of year, we can all enjoy the warmer weather and stay safe with our pets!

COMMUNITY
Do you have some time to have fun? Girlguiding UK is a charity organisation that has just celebrated our Centenary year. We currently have approximately 50,000 girls nationwide waiting to join. In Ryedale we have groups catering for all ages from 5 years upwards. We have some units that are in danger of closing as well as having waiting lists of girls wanting to join who are unable to do so due to the shortage of leaders.
Can you spare a couple of hours a week?
Girlguiding UK is committed to providing a safe environment for girls with 1 leader needed for every 12 Guides, every 8 Brownies or every 5 Rainbows. In order to give a place to every girl in the Ryedale area who would like to join in the fun, as well as maintaining current groups, more adult supervision is needed. Meetings are always lively and animated and leaders usually have as much fun as the girls. You too can come along and enjoy the experience.
girls enjoying events and activities that they have organised. If your talents lie in a different direction and you do not wish to join in the meetings, we always need help behind the scenes and are always happy to accept help from anyone able to give, even if only on a now and then basis. If you would like to get involved with your local Guiding unit or simply share a skill, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact me, Alison Hutchinson, Girlguiding Division Commissioner either by phone (07816 847271) or email (anhutch@gmail.com)

RYEDALE
The Simpson’s Trust
Serving the community for nearly 90 years
I
n 1924 a wealthy Norton resident, Miss Sarah Elizabeth Simpson, donated the, then enormous, sum of £10,000 to be invested and the proceeds used for charitable purposes.
The original trustees were two local solicitors, a bank manager and a vicar. They were charged with paying the interest on the fund for “the relief and assistance of any old or infirm or poor and necessitous deserving people in and about New Malton, Old Malton, Norton and the surrounding district without regard to sex, denomination, religious or political belief” The trustees met quarterly and gave hundreds of donations over the years, usually 50p and never more than £1 at a time until the mid 1970s when that generation of trustees recognised that inflation had eaten away the value of the original fund and that such small donations were not effective in relieving poverty. At that point it was calculated that the trust had given away approximately
£25.000 in donations and still had £15,000 capital from the original £10,000 trust. This capital was then more wisely invested in a range of different funds and today the trust has about £1000 per year to donate. Donations now tend to be in the region of £50£100 and commonly are for the urgent purchase of household equipment or to fund educational or other trips which families would otherwise be unable to afford. Most requests for funding come from either health visitors or family support workers who are close to the individuals or families in need. The money is often then channelled through the referring person to ensure greatest benefit from the gift. If you know of anyone who you think may benefit from, or wish to make a donation to, the work of the trust please contact the Secretary, Mrs Christine Grice 01944 768270. Further information about the trust, which is a registered charity, is available on the website www.thesimpsonstrust.org.
Fun dog classes, demonstrations of dog agility and the opportunity for your own dogs to have a go on the course! There will be tombolas, cake and plant stalls, doggy items for sale, face painting and children’s stalls and games. Refreshments are available all day. We will also be drawing the winners of our grand summer raffle (tickets are still available from the Ryedale Dog Rescue charity shop, Malton)
