elcome to the July edition. What is it about July that just makes you feel so much more relaxed? The weather is warmer (my other half will be pleased to hear that I’ve stopped putting the heating on!), the holiday season is almost upon us and there is so much to look forward to. In fact, there are so many events this month we have had to expand the number of pages we devote to them. What with agricultural shows, outdoor concerts, school and village fairs, carnivals and festivals you would be hard-pressed to be bored this month! We are celebrating 8 years of publishing our magazines this month! I can’t quite believe how long I have been running my business, or how far I’ve come since I started. With relentless monthly deadlines, huge amounts of

information to get together every month and my poor family who just put up with my being stuck at work for hours on end, you’d think I’d get fed up. But I can honestly say that I love it all, from meeting and getting to know our wonderful local business owners and helping local groups and charities get their message out to the local area, to choosing the front cover photo and colours each month. I’d like to thank all of our advertisers and readers who continue to support the Handy Mag – some since right at the beginning! We really appreciate all of the lovely comments we receive. The main aim and focus of the magazine has been and will continue to be you, the local community. Here’s to another 8 years! Well done to Mrs Hartle of Butterwick for winning the May competition. A FUN DAY OUT FOR ALL THE FAMILY! 14th JULY 2013 - SCAMPSTON PARK, MALTON, YO17 8NG

H

eld each year at Scampston Park, Ryedale, North Yorkshire, the Malton Show now enters its 127th year. Riding the wave of last year’s success, organisers have added even more exciting attractions, some slightly more exotic to North Yorkshire! Black Rock Llamas bring Llama racing, with audience participation, to Ryedale as well as showing off the agility skills of their Llamas! The Shadowquest Dog Team will be displaying Police service and protection dog skills. There are all the agricultural attractions, horticulture displays, farm exhibits and class entries that form the backbone of the show, as well as many other exciting displays and exhibits to appeal to the whole family. There are numerous events to take part in, including the tug-of-war, a fun dog show, or the many class events, craft marquee, farmers market.

FROM THE PRESIDENT It gives me great pleasure to welcome you to the Malton Show. My involvement with Malton Show began over 60 years ago as an assistant steward on the Ayrshire Cattle and I now have the immense privilege of serving as President. It would be nice to think that some of

the youngsters visiting today will have as long and happy an association with the Malton Show as I have had.

Our attractions this year are many and varied but, as ever, our agricultural and horticultural exhibits are central to the Malton Show. Our cattle entries are World class and the sheep, goats, horses, fur and feather continue to be an important part of the day.

There is a great deal to see for all the family so be sure to allow plenty of time to visit us. Have a lovely day.

The vintage machinery display continues to be a large regional rally. Take time to visit the Trade Stands and support the traders and our Sponsors.

n September 2012 local picture framers and printers, Norton Print & Frame, framed 8 works by Scottish artist Stuart McAlpine Miller for the main atrium of the Savoy Hotel, London. The agents of that deal were so delighted with the result that the company was asked again to work on the next installation at one of the spiritual homes of Art Deco, which recently underwent a £100 million refurbishment. Locals and visitors alike can enjoy cycling and walking in a wonderful woodland setting right on the edge of town. So far we have built a jumps area and cross country mountain bike trail loop (think a mini version of Dalby bike trails) - designed to allow progression for beginners and advanced cyclists alike. In addition to the cycle trails we have consulted the local walking groups with a view to improving footpaths and accessibility, installing seating and ensuring that the woods will be a place for all locals to enjoy. Although lots of work has been done on developing cycliong

facilities including a pump track for younger riders, the project is not all about the bike. There’s a picnic area for all to enjoy and work is planned to improve the footpath drainage for better conditions year round as well as a nature discovery trail aimed at encouraging families with children to get off the beaten track and explore the woodland. As part of a long term woodland management plan we are also reintroducing native species in the form of tree planting and woodland flowers along with improved natural habitat for all manner of wildlife. Walkers of all ages are encouraged to explore the woods and enjoy the facilities for free whilst cyclists are asked to pay £1 for a day ticket or become Newbridge Park Groupie members for £20 per year for individuals or £30 per year for a family of up to five. Membership is based on honesty (with regular spot checks) but it doesn’t just allow

The group also run regular fund raising events (watch out for Summer and Autumn!) and along with membership funds, every penny raised goes straight back to the project. These funds alone don’t cover the site running costs, insurance and land lease so without our amazing local business sponsors the site would not continue to run. We’d like to take this opportunity to thank all of our sponsors who have been with us from the start (even before we were open!) and without their valuable support none of this would have been possible. As well as sponsors we’ve had support for many more businesses and individuals. Take a look at our website where you can find out lots more www.newbridgepark.org We’re always on the lookout for new sponsors, supporters, groups and helpers though, whether it’s financial, loan of equipment, manpower or anything that can help a small group of volunteers keep this wonderful place going for the residents of Pickering and the surrounding villages or visitors to our wonderful area. A visit to Zenki Tiles & Interior will inspire you to take a fresh approach to decor and show you how to introduce some extra flair and creativity into your own home. The distinctive showroom has been deliberately designed to give a visual flavour of endless possibilities for the home, and goes way, way beyond the usual collection of tiles found in a typical showroom. The idea for Zenki came when Dave and Steve discovered a need for a good tile supplier in the local area. They decided to open a tile shop next to Derwent Vale Building Company at the Windmill House Estate, Showfield Lane in Malton. However, once it was under way, the project took on a life of its own! Dave said: “As we were in a small area, rather than simply displaying a square metre of every type of tile we supplied, which I find pretty uninspiring, we decided to use the space to present new ideas – and it just progressed from there!

creative iDeas

Tiling is just the start of the show at Zenki. Glass, copper, acrylic and hardwood are all incorporated into the displays. 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Fresh bright colours are used, such as lime green acrylic bathroom cabinets, there are beautiful natural stone samples, mosaics and printed glass panels featuring natural images. Alongside these unique tile displays, a huge selection of kitchen tiles is also available to view. There is a brand new range of tile designs in the shop this autumn with even more inspiration for your project. Owners Dave Hume and Steve Dunn said: “The showroom is intended to demonstrate that you don’t have to stay plain with

your design. There are lots of exciting design ideas you can use in any home, and it needn’t be very expensive – just a small subtle idea can transform a room into something really special. It’s not difficult to be creative on a budget.” Special features customers can try include having an oak ‘niche’ built in their bathroom to use as a display space or for storing towels, bespoke glass splashback panels printed with their choice of image, stunning granite or quartz worktops, or a glamorous water feature. Dave and Steve are encouraging customers to come up with something unique for their home by incorporating their personalities and hobbies into their designs. For example, at the Zenki showroom, there is a Harley Davidson display consisting of a huge image of a motorbike printed onto glass, which is tiled into the wall complete with leather belt, half a petrol tank and an exhaust pipe doubling up as a towel rail! “We really would like customers to use Zenki as an inspiration to get creative, express themselves and try new design ideas in their homes – whatever they would like to try, we can create it.”

Restless Legs Syndrome Do you feel the need to move your legs frequently because of uncomfortable or unpleasant sensations? Are the unpleasant sensations worse when sitting still or lying down? Do the unpleasant sensations disappear or reduce when you’re walking or stretching? Does the problem get worse or only occur in the evening or at night? If you answered yes to all four questions you may be suffering from restless legs syndrome (RLS), also known as Ekbom syndrome after the professor who first named it. RYEDALE • JULY 2013 • ISSUE 90 combines and interprets sensing and movement. The sufferer feels an irresistible urge to move their legs, (and sometimes other limbs) in response to the perceived discomfort. RLS can interfere with sleep, making sufferers drowsy and irritable the next day. It can cause problems at work if the sufferer is required to spend long periods sitting at a desk, and in the worst cases it can result in job loss and relationship problems. RLS is a common condition. Up to 10% of people are believed to suffer with it, yet many health professionals don’t really understand what it is and how to treat it. It is now believed to be caused by an imbalance of dopamine, a chemical that transmits signals between nerve cells in the brain. It is

likely to be genetic because about 60% of people with restless legs also have a family member with the condition. Anyone can suffer with RLS, but it is more common in older adults and women. In fact, about 40% of pregnant women report the symptoms to some degree. Health conditions such as diabetes, iron deficiency, rheumatoid arthritis, and kidney failure can also trigger restless legs syndrome. The severity of RLS varies between individuals. Most cases are mild and can be alleviated by: • Walking or stretching • Taking a warm or cool bath • Relaxation exercises • Distraction...having a conversation or playing a game • Massage

Top Tips from a dental professional

Do you feel confident about your smile?

W

hen you look in the mirror are you happy with your smile or do you feel they could look better? Now let’s be honest we don’t all want to look as though we’ve had work done, for by Christine Parker us shy and retiring Brits the BDS (GDC 72136) thought of a Hollywood smile turns many of us off. However there are modern techniques available that can brighten your smile, smooth irregularities and generally improve the appearance of your teeth without having to drill great chunks away to place conventional crown and bridge work ( Caps). Sometimes just by smoothing a few rough edges or altering the angle of the edge of a tooth can really improve the overall appearance of a smile, at the other end of the spectrum a course of adult orthodontics may be the best answer. By discussing your concerns with your dentist they can guide you through the maze of dental treatments available for you to achieve your perfect smile. There are plenty of studies available showing that satisfaction with and confidence in your oral health and apperance has a significant impact on your overall self-confidence. We as dentists see it on a daily basis as patients are delighted with the work we have provided. If you would like to see what can be achieved then why not call Georgina at the Howardian Dental Practice for an honest and up to date cosmetic assessment. Whilst we don’t provide all the services available (orthodontics and implants) we can refer you to trusted colleagues and work together to create the smile you’ve always wanted. We also provide non-surgical facial rejuvenation with facial peeling, dermal fillers and wrinkle reduction. Once again with an emphasis on a natural, aesthetic result.

C se om t u pu yo p ur to ters ne su ed i t s

Ella... ...on part time jobs A couple of years ago, I would have laughed at the mere concept of getting a job. I had much better things to be getting on with, like having sleepovers and playing video games, and all that time spent, ahem, doing homework… This year however, teenagers my age are practically battling each other in desperation for work opportunities; summer is virtually upon us, and nobody has any money. Acquiring a part-time or a summer job amidst stiff competition from your very own peers is no easy task. I have heard horror stories from friends of being one of 90 applicants, or going through about 20 interviews before losing out and having to start all over. Finding one that doesn’t eat into your school or social life is another considerable hurdle, not to mention arranging transport there and back. Yet, if you can manage all of that, it’s going to be worth it, because, well, money. There are some other considerable advantages if you start working while you’re a teenager. There’s a sense of independence that comes with the ability to not have to mooch off Mum and Dad all the time, and an increased probability of becoming an actual functioning human being one day. Likewise money management is an important thing to get to grips with before heading off to university. Indispensable, one could say. A less well-known benefit was told to me by a friend the other day, who said that being at work was the only time she ever spoke to adults who weren’t teachers, or to whom she wasn’t related. It brings to light the fact that there really aren’t that many social situations that involve multiple generations, which is maybe a shame. People over 30 may not be cool by default, but sometimes they do have interesting things to say. Of course, there’s always the chance that your job will be fulfilling and entertaining, landing apprenticeships in an area that interests you is always a bonus on a CV. (Although some of us lucky people just get to sit down and ramble about whatever topic has been trundling through their brain for the past few weeks) But even if your job isn’t the highlight of your week, gaining some experience doing something can only ever be a bonus later on. Moreover …did I already mention money?

auto BIOGRAPHIES New Audi A3

By Tim Barnes-Clay Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk | @carwriteups

AUDI HAS made a breakthrough in premium compact hatchback quality and capability with the all-new A3. Redesigned from the ground up following the principles of ‘Audi ultra’ lightweight construction, the German motor tips the scales an impressive 80 kg lighter on average than its forerunner. The same meticulous pursuit of progress is evident in the sophisticated cabin, which genuinely breaks new ground in the class with standards of materials, workmanship and ergonomics that indisputably push the boundaries at this level. British Audi A3 models have launched with a choice of three specification options – SE, Sport and S line - all of which are extraordinarily well appointed. The Sport model, on test here, sits on beefy 17 inch alloy wheels and features the ‘Audi drive select adaptive dynamics system’. This enables you to choose from five modes which prescribe the car’s driving characteristics – Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, Efficiency and Individual. They influence the weighting of the steering, the sensitivity of the accelerator pedal, the shift points of the S-tronic transmission, if fitted, and the parameters used by the optional adaptive cruise control system. Additional Sport features include a revitalizing two-zone climate control, sports seats, sports steering wheel and aluminium detailing inside and out. On the move, the A3 Sport oil-burner, although perched on firm and athletic springs, is not uncomfortable and it sticks to some of England’s 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

THE YORKSHIRE

ARBORETUM A GLORIOUS GARDEN OF TREES IN THE HEART OF RYEDALE

Y

ou may have noticed the new signs as you drive past Castle Howard. Tucked away down a track, nestling in a sheltered valley, is the Yorkshire Arboretum, a glorious 120 acre garden of trees from around the world set against a backdrop of stunning parkland, lakes, vistas and ponds. First opened on a limited basis to the public in 1999 as the Castle Howard Arboretum, it was often described as a hidden gem because so many tourists, and even Ryedale residents, were unaware of its existence. But fourteen years on, and now with a new name, the Yorkshire Arboretum welcomes visitors 7 days a week for 9 months of the year, and is raising its profile both locally and further afield. Woodland walks, tours, family activities, lectures and workshops, interactive displays, lakeside trails, events, and a comprehensive programme of outdoor education are all now on offer, making the arboretum a great day out for visitors of all ages. Yorkshire Arboretum Director, John Grimshaw, explained the new approach “As guardians of a unique plant collection set in an historic landscape, it’s critical that we strike the right balance between conserving this extraordinary garden, and developing it to meet the needs of our visitors who in turn enable us to continue our important conservation and education projects. We aim to preserve the serenity which makes this such a special place to visit, while adding new features and activities to ensure that there’s something here for everyone to enjoy.” “We’re expanding our own programme of events and things to do, and working with a variety of organisations including Buglife and the Howardian Hills AONB to develop new projects and activities in which our visitors can get involved. Some of these projects also benefit the many birds, mammals and insects that call the arboretum home. For example, our

new wildflower meadows are being developed specifically to encourage bees, butterflies and other insects.” The arboretum is an independent charitable trust, run by a very small staff, supported by a passionate membership and teams of enthusiastic volunteers who are involved in everything from selling tickets, to caring for the grounds, to supporting school group visits. Dr Grimshaw noted “Over 150 people volunteer their time annually at the arboretum. We are indebted to them as without their generosity we simply couldn’t remain open to the public. As we grow, we’re always looking for new volunteers who have the skills and time to help us look after and develop this special place.” The ethos of using local resources and skills to care for a valuable part of Yorkshire’s heritage even extends to the arboretum’s café which uses seasonal, local produce to offer a menu of homecooked dishes and mouth-watering cakes, and enjoys an enviable reputation for delicious food and friendly service. As Dr Grimshaw commented, before heading out to check on the young trees recently planted outside the Visitor Centre, “After a long day of tree maintenance, there’s little better than a cup of Yorkshire tea and a slice of arboretum-baked cake!”

hursday 30th May marked 2013’s “Tax Freedom Day”. That’s the day you actually get to keep the money you earn, rather than pay it to the Government. Yes. Believe it or not, all the money you earned in January, February, by Julie Wilson, March, April and virtually no- nonsense Yorkshire the whole of May has been Financial Planner nicked by the Government. The date is calculated by the Adam Smith Institute by number crunching the tax taken as a percentage of all national income. This year it’s 41.5% - 150 days of the year. Yet according to “Unbiased”, the UK professional services search and research organisation, UK consumers wasted £4.6 billion unnecessarily. This waste comes from not taking advantage of all the available tax reliefs and shelters, and paying tax unnecessarily – particularly Capital Gains Tax, and my personal pet hate, Inheritance, or death, Tax – payable at a whopping 40%. In our experience, the problem arises through the general public’s lack of financial knowledge. Which is hardly surprising given that there’s no formal financial education process in this Country. We often come across intelligent individuals who are really savvy about business and investing, but clueless about tax planning and wealth management. Which often means that the money they’ve worked all their lives for goes down the pan in death taxes or paying for elderly care. Considerations for pets this summer

by Celia Carr RVN, Station House Vets

As the weather gets hotter as a nation we like to spend more time outside enjoying the sunshine and taking trips to the beach and the countryside. In Britain a day out often involves packing a bag for every eventuality:- sunhat, sunglasses, sun cream, umbrella, waterproofs, wellies and warm clothes; because you never know what the weather will do as the day goes on! We can be so preoccupied in planning for everything that we forget that our pets have needs too for example hairless areas and white patches can become sunburnt unless we apply sunblock this also applies to prominent bits such as the nose and ears. If you are leaving your pet outside ensure they are able to move out of the sun into a cool shaded area which is present all day and plenty of drinking water is readily available in a container that cannot be knocked over. Never leave pets alone in a caravan or a conservatory even if the day appears to be cloudy, if the sun comes out it can quickly become unbearably hot. If you like to take your dog with you on your trips ensure the destination is pet friendly so your dog can be with you at all times. Provide water in the car and keep the windows partially open to create a breeze whilst driving. Give your dog a break from the heat by having regular stops on the journey. Walking your dog in the morning or the evening is best so they are not made to exercise in the hottest part of the day. Grooming regularly and clipping long haired breeds at the start of the summer can also help to keep them more comfortable in the heat. 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Dogs can die in hot cars which act like an oven so never leave them unattended for ANY length of time even with the windows open and in the shade. Evidence has shown that an outside temperature of 22 degrees can make the inside of a car reach 47 degrees within an hour! Dogs cool down by panting which causes them to lose body fluids, if they are stuck in a hot car they will become dehydrated and at risk of heat stroke which can be fatal! You now have a legal duty to keep your animal safe in hot weather and could be prosecuted if you put them at risk. Some pets are more prone to heatstroke due to their age, breed, build, coat and face shape. Signs include: Heavy panting and rapid pulse Vomiting and diarrhoea Red gums and salivation Lack of coordination Unable to rise after collapsing Loss of consciousness in extreme cases. Treatment involves moving the animal to a cool shaded area and trying to reduce their body temperature slowly by dousing or spraying them with cool water (not cold which could lead to them going into shock) and encouraging them to drink small amounts of cool water. A fan can be used to create a cool breeze but care must be taken not to let them cool down so much they begin to shiver. Keep dousing them with cool water until their breathing settles. Call the vet immediately for advice and get them to the surgery as soon as possible. Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 9th July

Dog of the month - Daisy Daisy came to Ryedale Dog Rescue due to her previous

owners ill health and is approximately 6 years old. She is used to living with another dog but we think she would settle as an only dog too. Being a typical lurcher she loves to chase things but she has a lovely temperament and is house trained. She is a true lady. Could you offer a loving new home to the lovely Daisy? If you would like to meet Daisy please contact Rosie on 07581 324153. If you would like to find out more about the dogs that we currently have ready for adoption please visit our website wwwryedaledogrescue. com

Racing frogs make it a winning night for Wilf Ward Trust An army of racing frogs made a dash for cash with local Rotary and Lions clubs to raise funds for new community facilities in Pickering. The night of frog racing meant big winnings of £2,000 to help the Wilf Ward Family Trust provide a new changing room which has a shower and disabled toilet with full wheelchair access. The facilities are now open at its cafe and community centre in Vivis House at the corner of Vivis Lane. Some of the frogs hopped into the new facilities with Pickering Rotary President, John Fields and Ryedale Lions Vice President, Vic Hall, to help present the money raised to Paul McCay, Chief Executive of the Wilf Ward Family Trust. “We are delighted to be able to help support new facilities in Pickering for the disabled, both for those living in the town and for our many disabled visitors,” said Rotary’s John Fields. “This is a great example of how voluntary organisations like Rotary and Lions work hand in hand with local charities to raise funds for such important services,” said Lions’ Vic Hall.

Thanking the Rotary and Lions clubs for their fund-raising success, Paul McCay said the new Wilf Ward facilities at Vivis House, including the new community cafe and changing facilities, were already proving popular. “We have exceeded our initial expectations in terms of demand and that makes it a very valuable addition to Pickering and the community,” said Mr McCay.

A Good Read Delete This At Your Peril by Neil Forsyth

You know those spam emails you receive on a daily basis? What do you do with them? Click and delete? Wonder idly if there really is a long-lost relative somewhere who has left you his entire fortune? Swear at the screen? Most likely a combination of all three. Well, here is another answer. Reply. Forsyth’s ‘hero’, Bob Servant, does just that. Every email is read carefully and replied to just as carefully. The ensuing

correspondence is detailed in this book, and it is laugh-out-loud funny from beginning to end. Each of the initial scenarios will be familiar to anyone who has ever noticed the spam piling up in their mailbox. The first is from ‘His Royal Highnest (sic). Jack Thompson’, who offers Bob 20% of a $75m fortune. Bob manages to haggle upwards, eventually requesting four live lions, preferably ones that can talk, as his share of the profits. This is followed by a long saga involving a kidnapped postman; more than one ‘relationship’ with nubile Russians; a misunderstanding which sees Bob flying to Dhaka, Bangladesh rather than Dakar, Senegal and a long-distance relationship between Bob’s female alter-ego Bobby, and Benjamin, who is desperate to see a photograph of his conquest. The exchanges become more and more ridiculous the longer they continue, as Forsyth changes Bob’s stories and demands while drawing the correspondents on in the hope of eventual financial gain. Bob’s own history is gradually pieced together too, with footnotes to confirm that he is of course, a compulsive liar.

Just Imagine

by Pippa Goodhart and Nick Sharratt This is the new book from the author and illustrator behind the perennial favourite ‘You Choose’ - so popular in some houses that occasionally parents resort to hiding it in the hope of a night off. ‘Just Imagine’ does exactly what it says in the title - offers children a chance to use their imagination to develop their own stories, dreams and possibilities.

as imagination. Readers can role play the different scenarios, pretending to be a wild animal or a pet, or choosing and trying out their favourite vehicle. There are hundreds of ‘What if...’ questions that could be asked, and older children can use the book as a starting point for their own story writing. Destined to be a classic as quickly as its predecessor, this is one for kids of all ages.

Each page is richly illustrated with a series of possibilities - being very BIG or very small for example. Children can read the text and then decide from the pictures what they would like to be, and what they would not! They can go back in time, be magical, live underground, in the air, or even under the sea. At the end, they can choose their dreams for that night. This is a book that promotes talk and play as well www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 57

Malton male choir rings in the changes Malton District Male Voice Choir has moved its weekly practice night and is already reporting new members in its ranks just in time for a busy singing schedule this summer. “At least four new singers have already joined or will join us in the coming weeks as a result of our moving the weekly practice from Friday to Monday. Some of them have already sung with other groups”, said Chairman Tom Todd. “Some former members have also said they will consider rejoining the choir”, he added. The popular choir has met Fridays in Malton since it was created in 2007. But it has become difficult to attract new members on Fridays. “Initially that was a good night”, said, Tom, “but these days more men clearly prefer to start the week with a song rather than end it with one!”

RYEDALE • JULY 2013 • ISSUE 90 Secretary David Ackroyd said the choir, which has scores of concerts and charity appearances under its belt, “is now well-established with a solid singing nucleus and will survive a weekly practice switch. It has been encouraging how many people have welcomed the change”, he added. Acting Musical Director and pianist Vivien Wilcock, who has been with the choir since it started, stressed that new members needed no previous singing experience. “The best yardstick is an enjoyment of singing and good company. Singing is also good for the health! She declared.” Membership expansion comes at a good time for the choir, which is heading to Scarborough soon for two separate performances. It opens its summer schedule

on July 1st with a concert in South Cliff Methodist Church and ends the month with another trip to Scarborough for a concert at Queen Street Methodist Church on July 31st. “We’ve performed at South Cliff several times in the past, but this will be our first concert at Queen Street. said David Ackroyd. “We are looking forward to being back by the sea again”, The male voice choir will also sing at a local wedding in early August and concerts elsewhere are planned in the run-up to Christmas. START THEM YOUNG I was an incredibly picky eater as a child. I remember wanting to like tomatoes because they were such a lovely bright colour but still I wouldn’t eat them! It was only after my mother started growing them at home that I finally plucked one straight from the plant and popped it, warm from the sun, into my mouth - delicious!

While we’d all love a string of willing, young, helpers on the vegetable plot you do have to be realistic. Children can have short attention spans, will only want to do the jobs that appeal to them, and usually expect quick results. Us adults on the other hand tend to be stuck in our ways, place great importance in doing things slowly and methodically and don’t usually take well to sudden changes of plan! So how can you encourage your little ones, without boring them out of the garden, or having them dig up your row of prize leeks?

on the plot. Get hold of some good quality child size tools and encourage their attempts even if it isn’t quite what you’d have done - if digging holes and making mud pies is more in their line than neat rows of seedlings perhaps they could create a wildlife area? A shallow dish sunk into the ground can be used by birds, frogs, toads and hedgehogs, and a log pile will be home to all sorts of insects plus providing a possible hedgehog home. Giant sunflowers are great fun, especially if you have a growing competition, and wild flower seeds can just be scattered and will, in time, encourage useful insects and birds natural pest control!

Keen young growers can browse seed packets or catalogues to see what takes their fancy. Quick growing crops are a good suggestion - radishes and salad leaves pop up in no time at all and should give them almost instant If it is at all possible give children a satisfaction! Sweet young carrots are space that is completely their own likely to tempt even picky eaters, as AGD 3 Handy Mag 1/8page ad:AGD 3 Handy Mag 1/8p

are those lovely little cherry tomatoes. Popping peas out of their pods is very appealing and how about growing their own hideaway in the form of a lush green wigwam of peas or beans? They may not be keen on eating greens, but there is certainly a much better chance that they’ll be tempted to try something they’ve grown themselves. Fruit, such as strawberries and raspberries is usually popular, and if you haven’t got any of your own planted yet you can always get them enthusiastic by having an afternoon out at the pick your own farm. Ready grown plug plants can be good for helping them to set up an ‘instant’ plot - take a trip out to the garden centre to see what is on offer. If you already have seedlings started, then they could have the choice of some for their own plot (and you can see whose grows best!). Finally, don’t forget ‘indoor’ growing activities too - clean out the bottom half of a boiled egg and draw a face on it. Fill it with cotton wool soaked in water and sprinkle on some cress seeds - in just a few days the egg man will be growing hair and not only can they cut his hair but they can eat it too!

JOBS FOR JULY Make last sowings of carrots and French beans. Keep harvesting those beans, peas and courgettes. Sow Spring cabbage. Lift onions (and garlic if it’s still in) and dry for storing over the winter. Plait and hang (or store in a string bag). Remember to feed your tomatoes. As crops go over use the free space for quick growing salad leaves or radishes. Peg down some of the runners from your strawberries to root into new plants. Remove the remainder.

Marmite and Toast! Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church

Marmite and toast, ham and pineapple, peanut butter and jam, fruit cake and cheese; you either love it or you hate it! What makes a tasty snack for you is likely to be quite offensive to someone else. When it comes to great food, we all have an opinion. Supermarkets thrive on providing increasing choice and the virtual removal of seasonal variation just so that we can have what we want, when we want it! The very idea you should just eat what is put in front of you has gone out of fashion and even considered cruel by many parents today. On one level, we have come to expect and value each other’s preferences and opinions. I am proud to be part of a society that can accommodate such variety; but can we go too far? Different perspectives, views and opinions are helpful; they educate and broaden our horizons. It is important to recognise and celebrate that we are all unique. I enjoy variety and find the thought of conformity or fulfilling another’s expectations boring and restrictive. Yet I have a question: Are there any values that are non-negotiable, a value or values that should be held as a community, in agreement and above individual opinion? Is there such thing as common ‘right’ or ‘wrong’? Common values, held by the majority are harder to find. There is always someone who believes they have the ‘right’ to hold an alternative view. Like the supermarket we expect society to cater for our individual taste, even find our individual name on our Coca-Cola bottle! However, it seems there is a cost! Where are the values that unite a community, a cause for which we will stand together for the common good? Is it now okay to redefine marriage? Are there any values we should consider untouchable or do we live in an era when everything is up for debate and redefinition? I believe in love. It is ‘right’ to love our neighbours as we would like to be loved. I believe it is a value that was given to improve our individual and communal experience of life. It is a value I hold, but find really hard to live each day. I hate injustice. It is ‘wrong’ for politicians to receive payment for asking questions or for a footballer to be paid four or five times the wage of a nurse each week. I believe there are common values that we should cherish and protect for the benefit of our community do you? Or is that just my opinion?

If a farmer in Malawi can sell 90kg of rice at a fair price then he would have sufficient income to send one of his children to High School. Only 1 in 3 children attend High School in Malawi. Education is one of the most effective ways to escape poverty. If 90 people buy 1kg rice each you can....

eat someone out of poverty! The Malton & Norton Fairtrade Town group took up this challenge in 2010 and sold 90kg of Kilombero Rice. This year for Fairtrade Fortnight we took up the challenge again and have both white and brown rice for sale at £2.80 a kilo. It is very good rice and easy to cook.

Rice Cooking Instructions

To cook as a dish to accompany stews, curry, etc. Allow 1 cup for 2 people Put a tablespoon of oil or butter in a pan and toss the rice in it. Add two cups of water per cup of rice. Season with either salt or a stock cube. Cover and cook till all the water is absorbed. Serve. To serve as a vegetable risotto Fry chopped leeks and peppers (or any vegetable you like) in oil or butter. Add 1 cup of rice per 2 people. Stir in a cup of white wine; cover. Allow to take up and then keep adding water seasoned with stock cube slowly till the rice is soft and slightly sticky. Grate on some parmesan cheese. The rice is available from Alison Hardwick on 01653 691290 or alisonhardwick@btopenworld. com. If your group, church or school would like to join in the challenge please get in touch for leaflets, posters and other information. To find out more go to Just Trading’s website on www. justtradingscotland. co.uk and click on the 90kg Rice Challenge. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 65

St Mary’s Priory Church, Old Malton

Flower Festival The Malton & District Flower Club and the Flower Group of St Mary’s Priory, Old Malton have collaborated to put on a spectacular Alice in Wonderland themed Flower Festival to be held at St Mary’s Priory and the Priory Community Centre in Old Malton. The Festival will run from Friday 19th to Sunday 21st July inclusive (10am – 7pm Friday and Saturday, 1pm – 6pm Sunday), entrance is free (or a donation to the Priory would be much appreciated) and brochures may be purchased for £3. A preview evening will be on Thursday 18th July from 6.45pm: drinks and canapés will be served and the festival

will be officially opened by Lady Westbury. Tickets for the preview are £8 and may be purchased from Kath Taylor (01653 692601, or by e mail kathtaylor38@talktalk.net) and can be collected on the night. The Malton & District Flower Club members will display in the Priory many themed flower arrangements from the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party, to the Cheshire Cat, from the Queen of Hearts to the Mock Turtle! In addition there will be events at the Priory and the Community Centre for both adults and children, including a White Rabbit trail from the Priory to the Community Centre, guided tours of St Mary’s Priory hosted by Rev

Canon John Manchester at 3pm on Friday and Saturday, some traditional weaving in the church, and much more. Light refreshments will be for sale throughout each day in the Community Centre. St Mary’s Priory is the only remaining working Gilbertine Priory in the country, and we are constantly working to raise funds to preserve its architecture and stonework. We very much hope that this exciting event will swell the coffers for future renovation work at St Mary’s, as well as providing a fun day out for adults and children.

Rotary Dragons

Paddling for Help the Heroes York Rotary Dragon Boats are back on the Ouse on Sunday 14th July so come along for a day of exciting entertainment!

costumes and headgear and imaginative team titles.

36 teams will be paddling in long canoes to get the fastest times over the 300 metre stretch of the river between Scarborough and Lendal Bridges. The teams of sixteen are steered by a professional helmsman to avoid collisions but the stroke rate is determined by their own drummer with sometimes amusing results. Getting 16 people, not used to being in a boat, dipping and pulling together is not as easy as it sounds and more than one team have, in the past, finished up in the water to be rescued by the ever present safety boats. There are four boats racing every 10 minutes between 10am and the six boat finals at 4 o’clock. The teams are also competing for the best dressed trophy so be prepared to see a range of crazy

To keep spectators and supporters occupied and entertained between the races there are around thirty food, craft and charity stalls and live music on Judy Dench Walk on the museum side of the river. The prime purpose of the day is to raise funds for charities and over the last 10 years over £700,000 has been distributed by the Rotary Club of York to over 130 charities and all achieved by the nearly 6000 paddlers who have been involved over that period. The principal charity to benefit this year will be Help for Heroes and the money raised will be used to support

the new Personal Recovery Unit currently being built at Catterick Camp. The unit will be entering a team of veterans in the Challenge Event. There will also be a concert by the Military WAGS Choir at 7.30pm on Thursday 11th July in Shepherd Hall, St Olave’s School. Details from events@ st-peters.york.sch.uk or www. yorkrotary.co.uk Great opportunities to show, in a tangible way, our regard for the men and women who give such service to our country. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 77
