Travel On the tip of Africa

It’s Fathers Day on 19th June and I’ve included an article all about when and where it started (page 14). I was quite surprised that it is based on more than commercial opportunism! Not that we shouldn’t value the day, especially if that entails a family treat. Jinnah Restaurants are offering a bottle of Indian larger for every Dad dining on Fathers Day (page 15) and also giving away a meal for two in the Handy Mag competition this month (page 14). Curried out! Are you up for a challenge? You could be one of the first people to cycle 146 miles on the brand new fully signed “Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route” and raise money for our local charity Ryedale Special Families in the process. To do something new, get the pulse racing and contribute to a local gem of a charity is a great opportunity. The circular tour starts and finishes at Norton College and will take place over 2 days in July, with an overnight camp at Hutton Cranswick Sports and Recreation Centre. The Challenge is suitable for experienced cyclists, families or groups. Have a look at page 40 for more details, and feel inspired. My NEWS on the magazine front this month is that The Handy Mags have a brand new website at www. thehandymag.co.uk. Developed with Computer FX of Malton, it has searchable listings of all the businesses who currently advertise in the magazine, as well as local groups, community news and upcoming events. Please have a look and let me know what you think!

Until next month....

Books for Father’s Day

It’s Father’s Day on 19th June and we’ve gathered a collection of the best titles perfect for any Dad on his special day.

It’s Not the Winning that Counts by Max Davidson

Just when you think that sport is all about business and money, this book comes along and captures fifty of the most tear-jerking moments of good, honest sportsmanship that ever were. From the final putt of the 1969 Ryder cup to Freddie Flintoff’s heartwarming consolation of Brett Lee at the 2005 Ashes series, you’ll need to buy Dad some man-sized tissues to accompany this fantastic book!

Dad Manual

The Haynes In a format that’s familiar to most father figures, Haynes have put together this ingenious resource instructing Dads everywhere how to engage, involve and interest their children with all kinds of projects and activities. From making and growing things to kitchen fun and the rules of sport, as well as a number of ‘taking things apart’ diagrams, the comprehensive title is easy to follow and full of colour images and illustrations. With tonnes to keep Dads and their children busy, this is full of fantastic ideas to inspire and develop skills, as well as cementing that vital father-son/daughter bond. A must-have!

What You See is What You Get

by Alan Sugar Honest, controversial and very entertaining, this is the life story of the ultimate self-made man, best known as S’ralan. Sugar describes his early days growing up on a council estate in Hackney and how his father’s struggle motivated him towards becoming an entrepreneur, which led to his triumph with IT giant Amstrad. From achieving full-blown fame in the hit TV series The Apprentice to his peerage, this is a truly incredible story - bold, inspirational and highly amusing!

Race to the Pole

by Ben Fogle and James Cracknell For the adventurer within! Deciding that their jaunt across the Atlantic wasn’t quite challenging enough, this famous duo headed to the South Pole, inspired by the race between Captain Scott and Roald Amundsen almost a century ago. This diary-style story covers their gruelling trek, as well as the extensive preparation they underwent, making this a more intimate and enduring story as the reader journeys with them at each stage. Personal, honest and fascinating, this is the ultimate modern tale of endurance and friendship. 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Amazing & Extraordinary Facts: British Prime Minister by Jonathan Bastable Packed with fascinating facts and trivia, this title delves into the 300 year history of England’s Prime Ministers. Covering a wide range of topics and revealing a number of intimate details about Number Ten’s occupants over the years, from one who served 100 days to another who kept the job for 21 years, this is a thoroughly absorbing read that’s perfect for any politically-minded father.

A Special Father’s Day the support of the local YMCA and churches, and on the appointed Sunday – which, rather neatly for us in 2011, happened to be 19 June – YMCA members all went to church wearing roses in their lapels to honour their dads. Spokane’s church service attracted much wider attention than Fairmont’s and became an annual event. President Wilson was a speaker at the 1916 event, and eight years later President Coolidge backed one of several failed bids in Congress to recognise it as a national holiday – an ambition finally realised by President Nixon only in 1972.

T

here is a very good reason why my family should buy me lots of presents this Father’s Day, which falls on 19 June.

They, and all other families for that matter, should be queuing up at the nation’s department stores to spend, spend, spend on bottles of scotch, pipes, slippers, motoring sundries and all similar items beloved of dads in order to save the nation. At this point I can quite clearly hear the cynics saying that’s all that Father’s Day is about – envious dads trying to even the score with mums, who are pampered, showered with gifts and generally spoilt rotten on Mother’s Day. I thought so myself until recently, but the truth is slightly different. For, surprisingly, Father’s Day was started by mums. They were American mums and they didn’t have a consumer-led economic boost in mind. It was all far, far more serious than that. The first Father’s Day was held in Fairmont, West Virginia, on 5 July 1908, as a memorial service for more than 200 men recently killed in the Monongah Mining Disaster, leaving 1,000 fatherless children. It was a largely local affair, although in what seems to have been a case of simultaneous invention, the town of Spokane, Washington, held another Father’s Day service two years later. The idea belonged to Sonora Smart Dodd whose father William, a Civil War veteran, had raised six children on his own after his wife died in childbirth. This was at a time when motherhood was becoming increasingly sentimentalised and Mothering Sunday was being more widely celebrated. Dodd felt that men deserved an equal break (hurrah!). She won 14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

So last year was the centenary of the first Father’s Day. This was celebrated by the ringing of church bells and processions of grateful children bearing bottles of scotch. Well, it should have been, but it wasn’t. The reason is that this year, the day falls on Trinity Sunday in the Christian calendar and it was felt that this was a more appropriate date for celebrations. What would really please me now would be for someone to buy me a bottle of scotch… By Ted Bruning

mall companies in and around Malton that don’t have the right presence online are missing out on business.

David Walker, owner of family run business Malton Web Design, is on a mission to bring that situation to an end. He said: “A lot of businesses in the area still don’t have a website. It’s a real missed opportunity in this day and age. And a lot of businesses who are online are still not being found. “We are specialists at getting your business found on the internet.” Malton Web Design has just launched a new pricing structure and customer service package geared towards enabling businesses to get the best out of their website, day in day out. David added: “Having a website is one thing, but finding the time to maintain it and keep it updated with fresh content is another matter entirely. Through our experience we’ve realised a lot of businesses just don’t manage to get round to it – so instead of just building a website and handing it over, we can now offer a regular update service.

As well as taking a job off your to-do list, by letting Malton Web Design take care of your website, they will also keep an eye on your search engine optimisation, which means you’ll constantly be kept on the radar of search engines like Google. David has years of experience in IT and working on websites – and he makes sure the customer only ever benefits from this. He said: “I won’t bamboozle anyone with “techie” jargon - I try to be as straightforward as possible. I always make sure that I’m communicating with customers in line with their own knowledge and experience, keeping them involved and up to date with any developments.”

There are many ways to use a website for your business. A simple starter package is a cost-effective way of gaining customers via the web. Getting to know I.T. Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 Mobile Scanner

F

or a number of years I have used HP LaserJet All-in-Ones as my preferred office printer and for a similar number of years I have been saying to myself that I must scan all of my personal and business paperwork into an electronic form. One of the reasons the piles of paper got higher and less organised was that the HP scanner feature was single sided and slow. That’s ok if you have only written on one side of a 10 page document but, call me a Yorkshireman, there’s another side to write on. One of my customers asked if I could get them a ScanSnap as it had been recommended to them. After unpacking and installing the ScanSnap and its software I was a fan and had to have one

for my office too. As the title says, the Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 is a mobile scanner. It’s small but not too small to compromise the task it is asked to do. The combination of the scanner and software allow you to scan both sides of the page with a single scan then save the pages as PDF, searchable PDF, JPG, load into Microsoft Word and numerous other formats. I am now happily scanning as fast as I can to convert the mountain of paper and shelves of files into an electronic format which I can more easily access whenever and wherever I need along with ensuring it is backed up along with all of my other data.

by Nick Teasdale www.tknowit.net

The Fujitsu ScanSnap is fast, accurate and compact. If you are out and about on the road with your laptop then it can be powered from the USB port if you can’t find a mains point. The only hesitation to getting one of these for some people may be the price which is £200-250 which could make it more viable for business users who would quickly recoup the cost with the time saved scanning and accessing documentation.

Ryedale Folk Museum goes to War BLITZ spirit at the ready – an invasion is due to take place in Ryedale. The past will come to life at Ryedale Folk Museum’s increasingly popular World War Two weekend on Saturday June 4 and Sunday June 5, with an army of re-enactors recreating the experiences of the armed forces, the home guard and families in the 1940s. There will be weaponry displays, soldiers marching in full authentic uniform, 1940s vehicles and Land Army girls demonstrating their work. You can eat at traditional Second World War-style cafes and soup kitchens and even handle the kind of gun used at the time. A special highlight will be a 1940s dance from 7pm to 10pm on Saturday night. 1940s dress is ‘encouraged’, but not obligatory, and a good number of re-enactors will be on hand to make it a traditional period knees-up. 1940s singer Marina Mae will provide the music and tea and cakes will be served in old-fashioned china. Tickets are just £5 – call the museum for more details.

June events at Ryedale Folk Museum Saturday May 28 to Friday June 3 – Half-term cooking week. Learn to cook just like your granny did on the traditional ranges in the museum’s cottages. There will be demonstrations of (and the chance to try) scones, patties and biscuits, which youngsters can decorate themselves. Friday June 3 – the French choir Melodie en Retz will be giving informal performances on site throughout the day. The continental theme continues into next month on Bastille Day (July 14) with a French barn dance and picnic. Sunday June 12 – a stream of beautiful classic cars will roar into the site with the MG Classic Car Rally. It’s a great day out – all the family are welcome. 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A hidden gem on your doorstep Experience traditional ways of life and feel close to the people of the past 400 years. Ryedale Folk Museum has a long trail of fascinating artefacts and buildings spread over its five-acre site. As petrol prices climb, it makes sense to look closer to home for your family days out – and at just an hour’s drive from York, the museum is an easy and cost-effective day out. There’s a mind-boggling array of ways to see, hear, touch and even taste the past, from fully fitted-out thatched cottages and traditional shops to beekeeping, art exhibitions, cookery demonstrations, a model village complete with a duck pond and vintage tractors – plus a witch’s hovel where only the brave dare venture. There’s something for all the family – children can learn about the lives of the Victorians, Tudors and technology through the ages. Youngsters particularly enjoy the discovery trails and the interactive demonstrations of traditional crafts such as rope-making, rag rugging and print making, or if they’re simply into racing around, there’s plenty of room for that.

Extra information There are loads of activities happening on site, especially through school holidays and special events throughout the year. See www.ryedalefolkmuseum. co.uk for details. Or call 01751 info@ryedalefolkmuseum.co.uk

ARCHITECTURAL SERVICES

Richard Webster at Prospect Design can help you turn your home into your dream property.

R

ichard Webster of Prospect Design is a local architectural technologist, offering a friendly, accessible service for people looking for cost-effective solutions to extend, convert or build a new property. Prospect Design offers a full range of Architectural services from a full “conception to completion” architectural design and management service to CAD draughting. Richard can also act as your agent in submitting Planning and Building regulation applications on your behalf taking the stress out of a potentially complicated procedure. Richard Webster established the business at the beginning of 2007 having always wanted to be his own boss. With 8 years’ experience under his belt he felt the time was right time to pass on his skills and expertise to help people plan affordable, achievable building projects. Working with a professional during the early stages of any build will help you to establish a brief that realises a design which not only meets your needs but is viable to build and cost-effective too. Taking advantage of a professional’s advice, experience, design skills and knowledge of regulations and industry contacts when considering a building project will save you time and money. Richard explains how he is able to help from the outset, “I can talk through the pro’s and cons of the different decisions that need to be made in terms of design and construction. For example, sketch schemes can be used to illustrate different designs, concepts and solutions. This approach should help you maximise the potential of any projects in terms of adding value to your property and improving the

usability and space available in your home.” By offering potential clients a free, no-obligation consultation prior to any formal quotation Richard can ensure that he really understands what the client is looking for in terms of design and general budget and thus tailor his designs, services and quotation accordingly. Richard provides a fixed price quotation so that you know from the outset what the costs will be. Prospect Design aims to continually improve the service offered to clients. Richard receives regular industry and technical updates so he can advise clients on the most suitable solutions for them. Prospect Design can also offer advice on sustainable “eco friendly” components where possible. Richard strives to deliver the best possible service in terms of advice, experience and value for money. “With a slow housing market and low interest rates limiting investments now could be a great time to invest in your home,” Richard explains. Richard’s excellent record of working with clients and getting projects through the planning process make him a safe bet for getting your building project moving. longevity in the build quality. For that reason we stand by our work, as it is the foundation of our business so will never leave a project until the customer is satisfied.

Step 2 - Estimating

As a member of the Federation of Master Builders, we have a special accreditation and are able to offer structural insurances via the - Masterbond 2 year, 6 year or 10 Year Builders Warranty Insurance.

Next, once the feasibility of the project has been thoroughly checked, you’ll be supplied with a full set of itemised estimates and, when you’re happy, a detailed programme of work with payment schedules and contracts. Then we’ll do the necessary preparation, such as meetings with the building team, carrying out risk assessments and notifying building control.

Step 3 - Construction During the work, quality control checks on the supplies and workmanship are carried out at every step. A crucial element of what we do is ensuring we minimise the disruption to you – so we’ll be keeping the site clean and tidy as we go. We’ll continually assess our progress and keep you fully informed of anything we need from you.

OUR GUARANTEES When the work is done, we’ll clear the site completely, carry out rigorous testing and sign off on building control. Then we can issue the appropriate certification and guarantees and make sure we tie up any loose ends.

Honey 2

In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.

Po is now living his dream as The Dragon Warrior, protecting the Valley of Peace alongside his friends and fellow kung fu masters, The Furious Five. But Po’s new life of awesomeness is threatened by the emergence of a formidable villain, who plans to use a secret, unstoppable weapon to conquer China and destroy kung fu. He must look to his past and uncover the secrets of his mysterious origins; only then will Po be able to unlock the strength he needs to succeed.

The legacy of legendary dancer and choreographer Honey Daniels lives on in spirited 17year-old Maria Bennett. After a brush with the law, Maria has returned to her gritty Bronx roots to rebuild her life with nothing but a talent for street dance and a burning ambition to prove herself. She finds refuge in the place that made her feel most alive as kid— the rec center where Honey’s exuberant classes first ignited her passion for dance.

Plant of the month

Astilbe

Astilbes don’t have a common name and are generally known by their Latin label, although some species are called False Goat’s Beard. These hardy perennials are widely cultivated for their attractive fern-like foliage and spectacular feathery cone-shaped clouds of flowers. They are very popular because they produce their abundant blooms when planted in full shade and damp, or even water-logged earth. Although they respond best to a rich soil, as do most plants, Astilbes also grow well in difficult to work clay soils. Virtually pest and disease free, these plants are very easy to grow. They are a beautiful plant to use as a feature beside a pond. While they prefer shade or partial shade, they can also cope with full sun as long as they are given plenty of water. Their flowers bloom for a long time and come in shades of red, pink and white. They don’t even need to be deadheaded as the flowers still look attractive when dried on the plant. Cut stems back in spring and divide clumps every four to five years. Astilbes are a must-have plant for every garden in a spot that doesn’t support anything else. They brighten up the shade in outstanding fashion.

TRAVEL

On the Tip of Africa

The Cape Peninsula H ead for the top of Table Mountain and the Cape Peninsula spreads below you, a dramatic finger of land jutting out 60 km into the ocean, bristling with peaks, fringed with rugged cliffs, coves and bays and pockets of suburbia surprisingly at ease in this stunning National Park, on the very edge of Cape Town.

It’s easy to forget the courage of early explorers as they sailed down the coast to round Africa’s most south-westerly point. Battered, as it was then, by the cool waters of the Atlantic, the western shore is peppered with exclusive villas – think Madonna, Beckham or Elton John - and sandy beaches such as Camp and Hout Bay, renowned for their seafood restaurants and romantic sunsets. Inland, the road climbs over craggy mountains, skirts vineyards and riding stables and, here and there, a thatched cottage straight out of rural England, before reaching the nature reserve. Stretching from the west coast, with its rich ‘forest of kelp’, to the eastern shore and the usually calm waters of False Bay, these wild open lands are covered with fynbos, an ancient scrub with over 1000 indigenous plants, including the bright King Protea and orange Pincushion, making the Western Cape the smallest but richest of the world’s six floral kingdoms. The wild life follows suite. Ramblers might spot antelopes and zebras, ostriches, 250 species of birds and Chacma baboons who have bred here for a million years. Out at sea, Southern Right whales, dolphins and seals frolic in the waves. Whatever the season, the weather may well take a turn for the worse when you approach the Cape of Storms, so called by the Portuguese explorer Dias

who discovered it in 1488. Later Vasco de Gama renamed it the Cape of Good Hope, honouring the new passage to the East and its lucrative trading route. Africa’s most south-westerly point was long thought to be the meeting place of the Indian and Atlantic oceans, but this is in fact found 150 km or so to the east, depending on prevailing winds. Standing on the legendary Cape of Good Hope is awesome but even more spectacular is its neighbour, Cape Point, on the south-eastern tip of the peninsula. Come gale force winds or driving rain, redwing starlings twitter along the path all the way to the cliff top. Whether you walk up to the lighthouse or take the funicular, Cape Point truly rises like the end of the world, often drifting in low cloud and mist, parting now and then to reveal the last sliver of land edged with vertiginous cliffs. There is nothing ahead of you but vast churning waters melting into an ever changing sky. After such untamed wilderness, the east coast greets you like a breath of fresh air with warm sheltered waters, sweeping sands and quiet villages with colourful harbours and cobbled streets. There’s Cork Bay, all ceramics and fishing boats, Fish Hoek, framed by mountains or Simon’s Town remembering its illustrious visitors, Nelson and Kipling. Just minutes away, a colony of jackass penguins live on Boulders beach, digging their nests in the sand, basking on the rocks, wobbling in and out of the water, untroubled by noisy Egyptian geese and cormorants. Fluffy babies peep out of the holes, the most endearing residents on the tip of Africa.

s you drive around the Malton, Norton and the surrounding villages there are lots of really colourful and attractive displays to be seen in residents’ gardens and on business and public premises. They are a tribute to the efforts of the people who create them, who clearly get pleasure and satisfaction from doing so. But they also lift the spirits of those who pass by and make our locality a more attractive place to live in or to visit. This years event will be a Community Gardening competition called “Strictly Come Gardening”. The aim is to attract as many as possible to join in so that we can compile a portfolio of photographs that will be put on display in September to celebrate the enthusiasm and skill and pleasure that local gardens embody. Entry forms will be available at Yates’s Garden shop, The Tourist Information Centre and Dickens of a Deli in Malton marketplace. Entry is free with a closing date of Saturday 2nd July.

FOOD

Lemon Cream Strawberry Tart Who doesn’t look forward to our lovely local strawberries? Take the children to a local pick-your-own, then make this lovely tart, which is also good with raspberries and blueberries or a mix of all three!

Ingredients (serves 6) 1 pack of puff pastry 3 large tablespoons of good quality lemon curd (or make your own with the recipe below) 1 egg 150ml double cream 2 punnets of strawberries (hulled and sliced lengthways) Caster sugar for sprinkling

For the lemon curd (recipe from Delia)

150g caster sugar 2 large lemons (grated rind and juice) 4 large eggs 100g unsalted butter (cut into small pieces)

Method 1. If you decide to make your own lemon curd place the grated lemon rind and sugar in a bowl. In another bowl whisk the lemon juice together with the eggs and pour this mixture over the sugar. Add the butter, and place the bowl over a saucepan of barely simmering water. Cook, whisking constantly until thickened – about 20 minutes, making sure the water doesn’t boil or the curd will become grainy. Allow to cool completely. 2. Line a baking sheet with non stick parchment. Roll out the pastry on a floured surface until you get an even rectangle around 12 by 16 inches. Carefully move to the baking sheet. 3. Make an egg wash by beating the egg with a little water. 4. Using a sharp knife cut a 1 inch strip off each side of the pastry and set aside. Brush the egg wash about an inch wide all around the edge of the rectangle and replace the strips, pressing down gently to help them stick and trimming where necessary. This will create a border for the tart. 5. Brush the top of the strips with egg wash and lightly sprinkle with caster sugar. Prick the bottom of the tart all over with a fork and refrigerate for 30 minutes. 6. Preheat the oven to 200C/180 fan/400F/Gas 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

mark 6. 7. Bake the tart case for 15 minutes until golden. Check to see how it’s doing, you may need to turn the tray around if your oven is hotter in the back. The middle will probably have risen too so just poke it with a sharp knife to let the steam out as it bakes. If the pastry is browning too quickly turn the oven down and cook for another 5 minutes – it should only need 20 minutes in all. 8. Cool on a wire rack and as it cools press down the centre with a spoon or palette knife so that the inside of the tart is flat. Don’t worry if it flakes a bit. 9. When totally cool transfer the tart to a serving plate. Whip the cream to the soft peak stage with a little sugar if you like things sweet. Reserve half of the cream to serve with the tart, mix the rest with about three generous tablespoons of lemon curd – taste it, add more if you like. Spread the lemon cream over the base of the tart. 10. Overlap the sliced strawberries in rows as shown in the picture or just scatter as you like. Serve at once while the pastry is still crispy.

MOTORING

Rising in Value

C

ar buyers are used to driving their new purchase off the forecourt and it instantly plummeting in value. It’s a fact of motoring life. Or is it? What if we told you there are some cars out there that are actually rising in value? And we’re not just talking about automotive exotica either.

We spoke to experts from trade price bible CAP as well as leading auction house BCA to uncover the cars that are turning residual values on their heads. ‘There are some classic and sports cars that will keep going up in value,’ one expert told us. ‘Others will simply hold firm. But it’s all dependent on how much you use them and their condition.’ So here are our depreciation-busting top picks.

This one surprised us too. CAP has found that the Hard Top 4.0 Sahara two-door model with an automatic gearbox has risen £475 in the last 12 months to a trade price of £5,450. CAP says even at this price it’s considered to be a cheap, heavy-duty vehicle – but only for those that can afford to run it.

MINI

This is a good sign that the recession is easing. Prices for the Volante Convertible version of the stunning Aston Martin DB7 have risen £1,300 in the trade during the last year, according to CAP. An 04-reg, 50,000 miler currently costs £31,400. ‘Today’s buyers appear less concerned about running costs than they were 12 months ago,’ said CAP. By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

BYMOORSID K IR Landrovers

E

BCA says despite the volumes currently being sold, the Mini is a future classic in waiting. The auction house told us that One models are selling well for around £3,500 to £4,000 even with as many as 100,000 miles on the clock. But prices for well looked after Countryman, Convertible and Clubman models are the firmest.

Aston Martin DB7

K

Jeep Wrangler

Ford GT

London-based dealer Clive Sutton specialises in selling the most exclusive supercars. He often sees cars rise in value, but if he was spending his money it would be the Ford GT he’d shell out on. ‘The Ferrari Enzo was the one to go for a while ago, but prices have cooled,’ he told us. ‘Now the Ford GT is the car to invest in.’

Audi R8

It’s the V8-engined sports car from Audi that’s popular with buyers, reports CAP. Our experts said it had a slow start in the used market, but in the last 12 months a 2007 model with 20,000 miles has risen £1,900 in the trade to £53,100. ‘It’s increasing in popularity,’ said CAP’s man in the know. 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Sunshine, lush grass and sore feet How to help horses and ponies have a healthy summer The recent warm weather has been most welcome after a long dark winter and it is lovely seeing animals out grazing in lush fields.

many cases we can link this to a flush of grass at this time of year but tapeworm can also be a cause of colic so check your worming strategy.

However, as the weather warms up and the grass starts to grow we do see a large increase in cases of laminitis, colic and sweet itch. Laminitis can be seen in any equine but most commonly occurs in ponies, particularly native breeds which have adapted to live on quite poor terrain. There are obviously other causes of laminitis (breaking into feed bins; traumatic causes; linked to other diseases) but cases linked to flush grass are most common. If your pony has had laminitis previously it will always need to be managed to reduce the risk of recurrence. Other risk factors include being overweight, increased time grazing or area of turn out, access to new areas and hard ground. To try and prevent laminitis, consider limiting grazing time or area of grazing, use fields with poor grass growth or that have been grazed off by other animals and be vigilant for any signs of being foot sore or reluctant to move around. Affected animals will need veterinary treatment as this is a painful condition, moving them into a stable with the floor covered with a deep layer of soft bedding is always beneficial at the outset. We would recommend regular farriery for prone animals to keep feet (especially toes) nicely trimmed and examination of the hoof wall/white line can sometimes help pick up warning signs. Do consider whether these animals need feed on top of grazing and get advice on what to feed, soaking hay does help release sugars and decrease its energy content.

Warm still weather (the sort where you fancy having a barbecue) is favoured by midges which are most abundant at dawn and dusk (when you are just tucking into your burger and find you need to take shelter!). Midges and other small biting flies are attracted to horses and ponies and will cause signs of sweet itch in sensitised individuals, this is a form of allergy and will cause the animals to rub along their manes, backs, tails and sometimes become very distressed or irritated by insects hovering around their faces and ears. Housing prone individuals at dawn and dusk helps, as can fly sheets (the ones that completely cover their bellies and ideally ears and faces) and long acting insecticides all help prevent symptoms. Do telephone us for advice on products, being itchy is very unpleasant and does need treating.

We’ve seen an increase in cases of colic in recent weeks, usually the spasmodic or gassy type of colics where you might hear lots of belly noise and see droppings, but nevertheless painful animals. Signs to look for would be rolling, kicking or sometimes they are just quiet or off food. In 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
