elcome to our June edition! You’ll notice a rock theme to this month’s magazine! Bruce Foxton (cover photo and former bass guitarist with The Jam) will be in Pickering for the inaugural Pickering Music Festival on 18th July. Organised by volunteers at Pickering Recreation Club, there is a whole host of big names as well as local talent on show (see page 10) This month’s magazine is packed full of good reasons to get out and about in Ryedale and York. We have festivals, fetes, gardens, sporting events and carnivals! If the Tour de Yorkshire whet your appetite, the Malton Festival of cycling on 21st June promises to be another fantastic event. There was a report in one of the papers a few months ago about how careers in traditional trades are on the rise among young people. They are keen to get away from careers in front of computer screens to do something more practical. It is great to see young people taking an interest in keeping our traditional trades alive. From blacksmithing to saddle-makers and joinery to plumbing and roofing, it is essential that we value the work of our local specialist trades. After all, our small businesses are the heart of our local communities and they contribute a huge chunk of money into our local economy as well as employment. For those just starting out on their career, instead of taking the usual academic route, why not look into apprenticeships? Locally we’re lucky to have Derwent Training Association who offer a whole range of engineering apprenticeships with a wide variety of employers in and around Ryedale (page 23). Well done to Mrs Monkman of Norton for winning our April competition. Until next month…

PICKERING RECREATION CLUB PRESENTS:

PICKERING MUSIC FESTIVAL

THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT – SURELY! SATURDAY 18TH JULY

AT PICKERING FOOTBALL CLUB

F

ancy coming along to a music festival this summer, with some great headline acts, just down the road? Well, look no further. Billed as a live outdoor musical extravaganza, it certainly plans to put Pickering on the music festival map. Headlined by a punk/mod band with a world renowned bass player, an outstanding 1970s rock tribute band, the UK’s maddest party band, a fast emerging alternative rock band, and even some home grown talent, what’s not to like - just about something for everyone. Headliners of the Festival - From the Jam featuring iconic bassist Bruce Foxton from the original The Jam line up, fresh from a very successful Australian tour and presently on their ‘The Public Gets What The Public Wants’ tour in the UK. Expect to revisit classic Jam hits – Town Called Malice, Going Underground and The Modern World. Stir up some memories of sunny school days on the field, or the school dance, eyeing up your crush on the other side, trying to look exceptionally cool!

whole event is being organised to provide funding for the improvement of facilities for the sports clubs, and to help maintain the club building. So, why not recreate a little of the Glastonbury spirit in our neck of the woods? Pickering Town Football Club, Mill Lane, Pickering North Yorks. YO18 7DB. Doors open at 12 and the music starts at 1pm.

THIS IS A TICKET ONLY EVENT

Tickets Adults £20, Under 16s, £12. Available from www.ticketweb.co.uk/event/pickering-musicfestival/1676129 or Pickering Tourist Information Centre on 01751 473791 or for collection from Pickering Recreation Club, Mill Lane, Pickering. www.pickeringmusicfestival.org.uk Parking is available at Pickering Showground situated south of Pickering on the A169 and 10 minutes walk away.

The Boys Are (definitely) Back In Town with Limehouse Lizzy. Who can’t join in, at least on the chorus, to these anthemic lyrics? A hard-working tribute band presenting the greatest hits of rock legends, Thin Lizzy. Brace yourself for a thundering performance and some pyrotechnic displays! HUGE call themselves the ultimate party band and play everything from disco to reggae, rock to soul and jazz. They are York based and have a 4 piece brass section in the band providing the power and drive to every live performance. Add into the mix alternative rock group Glass Caves and this festival promises to be a special one. And not forgetting, Pickering’s very own local band Chu Ma Shu who are set to kick start the event. Minster FM will compere the event and there will be loads of great food and drink available. The event will be hosted by a team of volunteers from the club, supported by AMS Events, and this 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Making Sense of Information Technology

tKnowIT

ON RESPONSIBILITY Recently, it seems as though the ever present threat of adult responsibility is everywhere. The countdown on my phone never fails to remind me of the sickeningly short amount of time I have left in school, days which now consist of frantically cramming information into my head and hoping that it sticks. It’s with an odd sense of sadness, nostalgia and excitement that I approach my final few weeks of school, sugar coated with denial that something that has played such a huge role in my life for seven years is finally ending. Making my final university choices was a relief, the reality that in a few short months I will really be moving away finally sinking in. It’s now that my mum is desperately trying to ensure that I can survive on my own, on top of my school studies giving me ‘lessons’ on things such as cooking and cleaning. If this is growing up, I’m not sure I like it! Outside of school and university, this summer will mark my first holiday away with friends. It’s far too easy to think of these post exam holidays as a carefree jaunt, but so far all it has been is a lot of work! Who knew holidays could be so expensive? Who would’ve thought you have to think about serious things such as travel insurance and whether you want lost luggage protection? Or, how on earth do you get to the airport at four in the morning? It’s certainly something I was ignorant to on holidays abroad with my family, where my dad would take care of everything and my biggest responsibility was making sure I packed something to keep me entertained on the plane. It seems as though I am stuck in the in between stage of being an adult and being a teenager. The future is something that is so exciting and so terrifying I can’t decide whether I want to wish the time away or mourn each passing day of my childhood. My dad’s advice? Enjoy having your Sunday Dinner cooked for you while you still can. Emily 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

to a very high standard and we’re happy for new customers to contact his existing clients to see the work we’ve done.” Terry is very approachable and works alongside customers to ensure they get what they want. “Just about any size of build is possible,” said Terry. “From repairing a roof to building an extension, we are only to happy to offer a quote and get the job done professionally and within a good timescale.”

And whilst he is based in the Ryedale area, Terry and the team have been all over the UK for construction projects, including at a large hotel in Scotland, and more recently helping convert an old police house which still had the prison cells!

Perhaps the secret of his success is his good eye. “On some jobs, when we’re working with uneven surfaces, it’s much easier to just use plumb lines instead of the usual level – and everything has always been perfect!” said Terry.

Terry said: “I love my job – meeting people, doing the work and also working in the outdoors.

Morsbags groups known as pods can be found all over the world. The Kirkbymoorside Pod currently meets at St Chad’s Church and has made almost 2000 bags. The bags are made from recycled fabric and given away free, to be used instead of plastic carrier bags. The next sewing day is 21 June from 10am until 3pm. If you would like to make a bag just come along and join in.

If you need reasons to start using cloth shopping bags instead of plastic bags, here are just a few. Over 500 billion plastic bags are used worldwide each year (so that’s about 70 plastic bags per person – if everyone had a trusty 10 or so morsbags to keep and use, problem solved!) Retailers and governments are struggling to make the difference that is needed through taxes and bans – we – the consumers – need to take this into our own hands. “The impact of this plastic waste can be seen littering our landscape, threatening our wildlife and accumulating as ‘plastic soup’ in the Pacific Ocean, which may cover more than 15,000,000 sq. km,” Janez Potocnik – European Commissioner for the environment. According to MSN, the production of plastic bags creates enough solid waste per year to fill the Empire State Building two and a half times. In some parts of the ocean there are six pounds of plastic for every pound of plankton. For more information take a look at www. morsbags.com or phone Chris Dowie on 01751 432305. 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Framing Your Pictures

A

picture frame has some very important functions. It is the outermost border of the visualisation of the art and becomes part of the artwork. It holds all the materials together in a secure package and protects. Fine art framing should be elegant, smooth and show a consistent quality finish. Family-run Artisan Frames in Pickering have been involved in the art business for many years and have the expertise to provide you with the best creative framing solution, a fast and efficient service and a high standard of workmanship. Maria Bennett, owner, says “We provide bespoke picture framing and are able to give you made to measure frames and prints, customised mounts and always the best advice.” If you have a favourite image, send it to Artisan Frames in Pickering by email and they will print it through their high quality fine art and photographic printing service and then give it the most perfect frame. Artisan Frames work with photographers, artists, companies and individuals and anyone who has a

framing requirement, offering a wide range of more than a hundred stylish frames including plain wood, ornate gilded frames, painted frames finished in a Farrow and Ball colour and a wide variety of modern or traditional styles to suit your home or business. At their workshop, Artisan can frame anything from needlework and fabric to oil paintings and photographs. Fine art pieces require protection to stop any deterioration of the work, perhaps even repairing a damaged photograph or piece of artwork. Visit Artisan Frames at their workshops in Pickering each morning (plenty of onsite parking), and by appointment in the afternoons. Maria and the team would be pleased to meet you and discuss your framing needs.

COOKING, COOPERING AND THE SILVER SCREEN

C

ooking through the ages and a trip to the cinema are highlights of a new exhibition led by the Woodhams-Stone Collection working with Malton Museum. A fascinating glimpse of the many cinemas that once existed in Malton and Norton are on offer alongside a selection of kitchenalia through the ages in the Subscription Rooms in Malton’s Milton Rooms. Also making their first public appearance since they were donated to the Woodhams-Stone Collection by the Rawlings family, is an extensive collection of coopering tools used by Malton’s last surviving cooper Mr Digby Rawlings. Woodhams-Stone Collection Project Manager, Sarah Maultby said: “The display will include many of Digby’s tools, including his work bench plus some of the things he made whilst working for Russells brewery in Malton, such as the last barrel he made and a copy of the wooden tankard from the wreck of the Mary Rose. Digby was well known to many people locally who I am sure will enjoy reading all about his life at the exhibition. “We are also featuring a display of kitchen furniture, appliances and equipment from the inter-war years which illustrates the changes that took place during the early 20th century in domestic design and technology including the decline in domestic servants and the expansion and promotion of branded goods. “Once again the Woodhams-Stone Collection has been able to bring some fascinating items out of our store to put on public display for the first time in the town which really bring alive the story of Malton and Norton through the decades”. Malton Museum has contributed roman finds from a Roman kitchen and a small display on Malton’s part in the Magna Carta story. The exhibition is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 10am to 3pm and entry is free, but donations are welcome towards the running costs of future exhibitions and activities.

MALTON CHOIR IS SCARBOROUGH-BOUND

M

alton District Male Voice Choir heads for the coast in June for two concerts in quick succession in Scarborough and another later in the year in Bridlington. The choir returns to South Cliff Methodist Church on June 15th for its third appearance at that venue’s successful weekly Monday concert evenings. The programme had not been finalised as this issue went to press, but officials said it was likely to feature the choir’s usual broad mix of classical and popular male voice songs as well as solos. Just five days after the South Cliff concert, the Malton men are back in Scarborough for their second joint concert with The Staxton Singers. The two choirs will sing in Burnistone Village Hall on June 20th. Their joint concert in Malton on April 25th came in for praise from locals and visitors alike. They first met and sang together in April last year with five other choirs at a National Association of Choirs charity concert in Scarborough. The Malton Choir’s next appearance on the coast is planned for November 7th when it returns to Bridlington to take part in the East Coast Churches and Community Music Festival. However a planned Yorkshire Voices concert with five other local choirs at the Castle Howard Arboretum on July 4th has had to be cancelled. Organiser Anna Porter told the choirs “the arboretum team remains hugely enthusiastic about creating and developing a choral music ‘festival’ here so will redouble our efforts to secure funding to enable the event to take place next year”. After recruiting several new members already this year, Malton District MVC is keen to attract more to its weekly practices in Malton Methodist Church meeting rooms on Mondays 7.30-9.30pm. Call Secretary David Ackroyd on 01944 758693 or Chairman Tom Todd on 01653 692362.

FUN RIDE IN BEAUTIFUL BRANSDALE

R

ide Yorkshire are looking forward to this year’s Funride in Bransdale, in the North York Moors National Park, north of Helmsley, on 27th June. This annual event is organised to raise funds for Ryedale Special Families (www. ryedalespecialfamilies. org.uk), based in Malton, and for the Ride Yorkshire Foundation to help with their work with disadvantaged adults and children. A Funride or Pleasure ride is where horses and riders follow a waymarked course, with maps and directions provided. Thanks to the kind co-operation of landowners and farmers, the routes will have options of 10 or 13 miles and will follow bridleways, tracks and quiet lanes through moorland, woodland and farmland, with wonderful views and plenty of opportunity to vary the pace. The start venue will be Bonfield Ghyll Farm, owned by the National Trust and tenanted by David and Trudi Sanderson, who are very kindly hosting the event and providing refreshments. Non riders and

mountain-biking partners are also most welcome. The ride will be marshalled by Helmsley & District Rotary and Ryedale Special Families, whose members are happy to support and make sure riders feel safe in the open countryside. Last year’s event was a huge success, and the team are hoping for a repeat performance this year. To register or to find out more, please contact janet. cochrane@rideyorkshire.org or telephone 07583 451825 or 07570 112010. Visit www.rideyorkshire. org or find us on Facebook (‘Ride Yorkshire’).

SONGS FOR A SUMMER EVENING WITH HARMONIA & THE YORK PHILHARMONIC MALE VOICE CHOIR

O

n Saturday 20th June at St. Michael’s Church Malton York Philharmonic Male Voice Choir will be joining with the ladies of Harmonia of Malton to perform a selection of songs for a summer’s evening. The York ‘Phil’ gives some 30 concerts a year in and around the city of York, raising more than £16,000 for local and national charities. Founded in 1925 the choir has sung a wide range of music in many languages in every type of venue from village halls to stately homes; country chapels to cathedrals. The choir is particularly well known for its Christmas Carol concerts, which began in the Castle Museum York in 1962 and is now at the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall. Since 2000 the choir has expanded its repertoire, enjoyed competition success, and encouraged a strong and varied team of soloists under the leadership of its musical director, Beverley based music teacher Berenice Lewis. Harmonia are now in their seventh year and they have grown in experience and size over the years. There are now 56 members and they sing a variety of styles from musical theatre to gospel, from spiritual to jazz. They are inspired by their musical director Alison Davis, who is a local singing teacher and accomplished singer in her own right. Harmonia are in demand locally and they have a very full diary with bookings already being taken for 2016. They have raised money for many local and national charities including Ryedale Special Families, Saint Catherine’s Hospice, Yorkshire Cancer Research and Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research and have performed on several occasions at Castle Howard and the Kirk Theatre in Pickering as well as numerous churches and village halls. The two choirs met at the Eskdale Festival in Whitby in

2014 and this concert evolved from that meeting. It will truly be a wonderful evening of song and for anyone who enjoys choral music it is a must. Why should I make a will? By Yorkshire Riding Wills

A

Spouses may not be entitled to all of the family home, and then what if the children decide they want their share immediately?

Like one of those jobs that hang over you - clearing out a draw full of junk or the garage. You know it has to be done but you don’t feel it is urgent.

If you are not married or in a civil partnership your partner is not entitled to anything, even if you have children together.

However once it is done you can adopt a smug feeling of achievement.

If you have young children it is vital to make a will and appoint guardians for them. Without relatives surviving you they could end up in care. Even with grandparents surviving would you be happy leaving your toddler to be brought up by your 70 or 80-yearold parent or unreliable brother?

re you secretly superstitious about making a will? Do you fear that it will somehow hasten the inevitable?

Rik Mayall comedian and actor famous for many memorable characters, such as Lord Flashheart in Blackadder, tragically died last year aged 56 without making a will. The consequences for loved ones are onerous. Accessing bank and building society accounts can be difficult. Phone calls have to be made and expert advice taken.

More importantly for many, making a will avoids arguments and disputes at an emotionally difficult and stressful time. Legally qualified will writers and solicitors offer the most reliable option. With contested wills on the

SARA ESLER,

increase, it is vital that expert advice is sought. DIY wills often result in elementary mistakes, which make them easier to contest. Sir Peter Ustinov, famous for his portrayal of Hercules Poirot in the film Death on the Nile, left an estate estimated to be worth tens of millions when he died. His wishes were left on a scrap of paper, there followed a 9-year legal battle resulting in most of its value being devoured by solicitors’ fees. Most people are not lucky enough to be worth that sort of money but the point is clear – a will is essential. Yorkshire Riding Wills makes this as easy and straightforward for their clients as possible. They also offer advice on how to reduce tax liability and protect estates from outside influences that could reduce its value during your lifetime.

Helmsley brings history to life with Magna Carta anniversary event

F

un family event will mark Helmsley’s role as home to one of the 25 Magna Carta Barons

Marking its important place in history as home to one of the 25 barons who were ‘Sureties’ or guarantors of the Magna Carta, Helmsley is to hold an event to mark the 800th anniversary of the charter. Taking place on Sunday 14th June, the event will be one of many taking place across the country on that day and on Monday 15th. In 1215 Robert de Ros, Baron of Helmsley, was a witness at Runnymede as the charter was sealed by King John — a pivotal moment in reducing the extraordinary power the Crown had at the time. To mark the date, activities will run across Helmsley throughout the day, and include a dedicated ‘Living History’ path along the walkway from the town up to the original steps of Helmsley Castle. Storytellers, jugglers, a magician and traditional Morris Dancers will entertain visitors, and Helmsley Arts Centre’s 1812 Youth Theatre will perform their specially commissioned street theatre piece Magna Carta: Helmsley’s Story!, a comedy romp through the history of the period. The much-loved Bilsdale Silver Band will also be performing in the Market Place at 4.15.

residents. Em Whitfield Brooks of Helmsley in Business, who is also artistic director at Helmsley Arts Centre, said: “We’ve had lots of fun thinking up medieval activities and how to dress the town up. It should be a fantastic day for families, history buffs, tourists, locals – in fact anyone! It promises to be an event to remember. And you might just learn a bit of history too!” For more information, log on to www. visithelmsley.co.uk. An interesting video explaining the Magna Carta and Helmsley’s involvement is available to view on the website.

CONDITIONS AFFECTING RABBITS by Celia Carr RVN at Station House Vets

Now the weather is getting sunny It’s important to take care of your bunny Vaccinate for Myxo and VHD Treat for Fly Strike, Cheyletiella and Fleas.

STATION TION HOUSE VETS Equine & Small Animal

Myxo makes the rabbit unwell They grow lumps and the genitals swell Pus forms in the nose and the eyes Within two weeks the rabbit will die. It’s spread by contact with wild rabbits Or infected Bunny’s that co-habit Bites from Mosquitoes, Mites and Fleas Aid transmission of this nasty disease. No appetite, fever and lethargy Are signs of Viral Haemorrhagic Disease Bleeding from the mouth, rectum and nose Will lead bunny to curl up his toes. From five weeks they can have an injection Which provides them one years protection Treat rabbits for Biting Insects and Fleas Visit the Vets for MYXO-RHD. Cheyletiella, a mite, looks like fluff We know it as ‘walking dandruff’ It’s hard to stop it from spreading As it’s passed between animals and bedding. They cause red skin, hair loss and scabs It’s diagnosed by tape strips in labs As Cheyletiella can be host to disease Use a spot on for Mites and for Fleas. A nasty condition I really dislike Goes by the name of Blow Fly Strike Flies lay their eggs on the rabbits The next day they are covered in maggots. Flies are attracted to faeces In warm weather this attraction increases Old, overweight or unclean rabbits Are the perfect host for flies to inhabit. The maggots hatch and begin to eat Shock sets in quickly and its hard to treat The rabbit may appear to be sleepy Have skin seizures and sores that are weepy. ‘Rear guard’ provides 10 weeks protection From maggots and Veterinary attention Keep hutches and rabbits clean and dry And use a screen to help repel flies.

ADDERS

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

The common adder is mostly found in rough, open countryside and woodland, and although it is the only venomous snake native to Britain, is not aggressive by nature and will only bite if it is threatened or cornered. They prefer to move on if given the chance to do so. On warm days the adders will bask in the sun on tracks and paths, but disappear into the grass when they feel the vibrations of footsteps. However, due to their inquisitive nature dogs can sometimes disturb adders whilst exploring which is why we start to see bites to the face or paws at this time of year. Most adder encounters occur between March and October. To prevent your dog encountering an adder, keep them to paths and under control (preferably on a lead) in areas where adders are likely to be (North York Moors, Allerthorpe, Strensall Common) If you know or suspect your pet has been bitten by an adder try not to panic. Contact your vet promptly for treatment. Do not attempt first aid measures

such as trying to suck out the venom or applying a tourniquet as this may cause further harm. Try to keep your dog calm and if possible carry rather than let him walk as this will help slow the spread of venom around the body. It is likely that your pet will be admitted for an intravenous drip containing anti-venom and pain relief. If he has reacted particularly badly to the bite he will be hospitalised overnight to be monitored and kept comfortable. Once the vet is happy that your pet is recovering well he will be sent home and usually reexamined a few days later to ensure the swelling has gone and the surrounding tissue is healthy. Bites from adders are rarely fatal and most dogs will make a full recovery.

RYEDALE DOG RESCUE CHAMPIONS RESPONSIBLE RE-HOMING If you are looking for a new canine addition to your family then it’s worth remembering that rescue dogs can be excellent family pets. At Ryedale Dog Rescue we rescue dogs based on temperament, not breed and spend time getting to know them before they are re-homed. All of our dogs are neutered, microchipped and health checked before re-homing and we always home check before placing a dog in a home to ensure that we do our best to provide a good match. We also continue to provide support and advice whenever anyone needs it and if you are looking for a rescue dog you should expect all of this from all rescue centres. We love the dogs that we rescue and our aim is to ensure that they find a loving forever home, however long that takes.

FRAUD AND CYBERCRIME FOCUS OF NATIONAL NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH WEEK

N

eighbourhood Watch (NHW) is one of the largest voluntary crime prevention initiatives across the country and believes that everyone has a right to feel safe where they live. To help raise awareness of NHW, a national annual campaign takes place from 20th to 28th June and the theme for 2015 will be Fraud and Cybercrime.

Fraud has been in the news recently with the latest Crime Survey for England and Wales showing that reports of fraud have risen dramatically. It has come to light locally that once individuals have fallen victims to fraud they are placed on a list that is circulated to other fraudsters. Says Jim Maddan, Chair of National NHW (England & Wales), “People often don’t want to admit that they’ve been defrauded but we don’t believe people should suffer in silence. It’s only by spreading the word that we can help to defeat fraud”.

NHW Schemes can be large (a whole village) or they might involve just a few houses. Each NHW Scheme is led by a volunteer co-ordinator who receives messages from the Police concerning criminal concerns in the locality. These are then conveyed to members for observations. Co-ordinators also receive information from residents about anything suspicious they may have seen or heard and then pass it on to the Police. Of course, anything that needs immediate Police intervention (a crime in progress or an emergency) needs 999 action.

Email: info@bearbuilders.co.uk Website: www.bearbuilders.co.uk

Door step crime is one of the most disturbing, challenging and unwanted criminal activities as these people are often collecting intelligence for future criminal activity. NHW offers help to vunerable residents with its Nominated Neighbour Scheme that helps them to stop bogus callers. Further details of this Scheme and other features, with details of Police surgeries, Community and Police meetings can be found on www.ryedalenhwa.co.uk.

LET THE WORK BEGIN AT ST OSWALD’S!

I

t is definitely a time for Oswaldkirk residents to celebrate. Despite the twice refusal of funding from Heritage Lottery Fund, the supporters of St Oswald’s decided to take matters into their own hands and to date, have managed to raise an astonishing £67,000! It has taken 2 years to reach this point, but phase 1 of the restoration of their cherished church is now underway. There are masonry repairs, roof repairs and glazing repairs to be undertaken

to a church dating as far back as Saxon times. The work in phase 1, started after Easter this year, involves major masonry work to the East and South Elevations and the replacement of all rainwater goods. The cost of phase 1 is a staggering £67,300 and it is set to take 16 weeks to complete. None of this could have been possible without two things: the generosity of people, living close to and away from Oswaldkirk, donating whatever they could; and the drive, energy and focus of a small fundraising team of village residents. So despite not yet reaching the £100,000 target, with possible further grants, donations and fundraising anticipated as well as the Chancellor’s repayment of gift aid on donations, the

Diocese gave the go-ahead for the restoration to begin. Just some of the events Oswaldkirk residents, supporters and well-wishers have contributed to and attended include: wine tastings, community suppers, jazz concerts with internationally renowned musicians and the Church’s own Tea-Time Club. The most recent large fundraiser was last month. Held in St Oswald’s Church, ‘Songs by Candlelight’ was an evening of song performed by The Royal Academy of Music Singers. The performers generously donated their talent and time. Phase 2 will depend on future fundraising efforts – please visit www.ampleforthbenefice.org to keep updated on their progress.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Prevent Holiday Discomfort... Spring is here, and perhaps you are taking a well-earned spring or early summer break. But do you have some back or neck pain, just as you’re packing your suitcase? To prevent your holiday being hampered by discomfort, there are some tips to help you. Melanie Clark of Malton Chiropractic, explains: “If you are going on holiday, choose a light suitcase – maybe two small suitcases rather than one large one! Where possible, push the suitcase in front of you and avoid rushing around. “If there’s a long drive ahead, get sufficient rest before you start your journey, and once inside the car, adjust the driving seat to suit you. Wear loose clothing and try to relax, so there is less tension in your back and neck muscles.

Tel: 01653 228026 Mobile: 07969050422

“If you are jetting off to your holiday destination, then avoid alcohol as this can dehydrate you, and drink plenty of water. You can exercise in your plane seat, with shoulder shrugs, buttock clenches and foot circles. Where possible, have a walk around during the flight and at the airport.” Melanie is a Doctor of Chiropractic, a primary healthcare profession that specialises in diagnosis, treatment, management and prevention of spinal problems and issues relating to back problems. Treatment focuses on reducing pain, improving function and increasing mobility. Melanie uses a range of techniques including massage, manipulation, mobilisation techniques and acupuncture. Top Tips from a dental professional

TOOTH WEAR Studies have shown that dental anomalies are often more readily noticed when viewing a person than other physical by Christine Parker defects. BDS (GDC 72136) With time, age and lifestyle choices our teeth and mouth alter and the gleaming set of teeth we took for granted in our teens and twenties seem to be replaced by shorter and somewhat darker ones. Traditionally to repair the ravages of time we had to resort to crowning teeth which can be a destructive BEFORE process to achieve a good aesthetic result. Porcelain veneers were introduced but these again needed to have some removal AFTER of tooth tissue and were difficult to repair if chipped. Modern conservative dentistry now offers tooth shape and colour to be altered with little or no damage to the underlying tooth by placing white fillings over the front face of the teeth and repairing the chipped edges. These are a cost effective alternative to the porcelain based veneers and whist they may need to polished more regularly , if they chip they can be easily repaired. When combined with whitening they can have a very aesthetic result and make you and your teeth look younger. Left unchecked tooth wear can result in severe problems such as tooth loss, the need for root treatment and can cause disturbance to the bite which in turn can cause headaches, toothache and teeth to fracture. If you are concerned about the look of your teeth why not ask your dentist what they can do. For a full assessment of your mouth contact Georgina at HDP...

RESPONSIBILITY

KITCHENS DESIGNED, SUPPLIED & FITTED

Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church

I’m concerned we live in a world where our first response is more likely to point the finger at others than to accept any responsibility. In fact, I remember being told when I first learnt to drive that if you are in an accident, ‘never admit liability, even if you’re in the wrong’. Today, sadly in every sphere of life, this attitude seems to be the ‘cultural norm’ rather than the exception. I was shocked to recently discover that Personal Injury Legal Companies roam hospital wards hoping to drum up business amongst vulnerable people who should be getting well, not getting even. Although I recognise there can be grounds for a legitimate claim, there is a danger that we are breeding a blame culture. It is often easier to blame the politician for the state of our country, the teacher for the behaviour of our children or even the lack of time for our unhealthy lifestyle. As long as we don’t want to take responsibility, there will always be someone, or something, to blame. To combat those who were prone to finger wagging, Jesus asked a question: ‘Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?’ Jesus was teaching that judging others was a dangerous business and that before we point the finger at others, we should evaluate our own lives. In fact, we can’t change or take responsibility for the actions of others but we can shape our own journey through life. Just imagine how different the world would be if, before meddling in the lives of others, we took responsibility for our own lives? It is down to me to be the best husband, dad, friend and minister I can be; what are you taking responsibility for?

MERLIN TRADING UK LIMITED

I always chuckle to myself when I read the list of the funniest reasons given on car accident claim forms. The list is an illustration on a course we teach at Hope Central. Here are a couple of my favourites: ‘I was on my way to the Doctors with rear-end trouble when my universal joint gave way, causing me to have an accident’ and ‘Coming home, I drove into the wrong house and collided with a tree I don’t have’. Although funny, and apparently genuine, do they point to something more serious?

Dandelion and Thistle came to the animal home because their previous owners moved house and were not able to take

them. Thistle loves to be nosey and likes to help out when their cage is being cleaned. Dandelion loves nothing more than to eat and laze about, hence looking a little bit chubby. They would love a big garden to run and play in.

Summer River

Construction & Groundworks

By The Pastoral Poet By calm meadows and fields of corn; Through ancient, peaceful countryside, Past sculpted boulders, water worn; Swirling over polished gravel, Waltzing whirlpools onward travel Giddily, down to salty tides. Curling around some silted shoal, Each curl, as if a coiffured tress; Here jaunty damselflies patrol The verdant isles of watercress. Hazy thermals rise and tremble, Where the listless cows assemble Beside the giving waterhole. Murmurings, softer than a prayer, Are filtered through rising vapours. Swallows, hawking the upper air, Dash and dart in lofty capers; Dipping low to snip at midges, Skimming under wooden bridges, Twittering, with never a care.

Slingsby Duck Race Saturday 20th June 2015

O

n Saturday 20th June at 3pm over a thousand ducks will be released into Slingsby beck for Slingsby Community Primary School’s annual duck race. The Duck Race is part of a Family Fun Day organised by the Friends of Slingsby School (FOSS) to raise funds for the school. The Fun Day is from 12pm to 4pm at Slingsby Sports Field. The usual attractions such as face painting, bouncy castles and tombola are joined this year by demonstrations by birds of prey and fairground rides such as swing boats. Refreshments will be available throughout the afternoon. Entry is free. Ducks, priced at £1, can be bought on the day. Prizes will be awarded to the first three ducks to cross the line and there will be a special prize for the duck that comes last!! Last year FOSS raised over £2,000 and this money was put to good use to pay for the children’s swimming lessons and educational and fun trips amongst other things. So please come along and join us on a fun packed day to raise funds for our local school.

Community Heroes Yorkshire Housing’s independent living team help over 600 older or vulnerable people in Ryedale continue to live at home safely, by providing emergency alarms and face to face support.

facing. This can be anything from signposting to benefits advice, or help finding a gardener or assisting with and medical issues.

Meet independent living officer Gail Wilson who has worked for the service for 15 years. She is based at a sheltered housing scheme, Rye Court in Helmsley and also supports older people who live in their own homes in the community.

We offer a range of telecare solutions including smoke detectors linked to a monitoring centre, fall detectors and many more additional equipment to help you stay safe and independent. All can be potentially life saving, it’s great to offer customers extra peace of mind. I’m often out doing assessments or testing equipment.

What do you like best about your job? I just love the elderly and have done ever since I was little, as an eight year old girl I really enjoyed going to see my elderly neighbours. Older people have so much worldly experience, they can teach us a lot more than we can teach them. Working with older people is my ideal job; it’s what I’ve done since leaving school. I started off working in a care home, moved onto social services and have been working at Yorkshire Housing for the last fifteen years. Tell us about an average day at work? There isn’t such a thing as an average day; we have to respond to support all our customers for example if a customer has had a fall. However as a general rule I’ll start the day by doing daily wellbeing visits, which are a mixture of calling in to see people and making phone calls. I’ll then do some longer visits; we generally go and see customers weekly or monthly, depending on the level of support they have chosen. During my well being visit I will test their pendent alarm is working, and support them with any issues they maybe

Work doesn’t end at 5pm or at the weekend. Some of the team are always on call to support customers in emergency. If a customer presses their pendent alarm and needs support we’ll go out at no extra cost if their nominated family member is unavailable. What is your fondest memory from your time at Yorkshire Housing? There are too many to mention – I have fond memories of a 106 year old customer. She was an inspirational woman with a real presence about her; all the other residents had tremendous respect for her. Support packages start from less than £1 per day.
