elcome to our June edition. Is it a coincidence that the EU referendum is at the same time as the European Cup Football? We will undoubtedly be gripped as a nation with patriotic fervour and the success or failure of our national team may largely determine whether we stay or leave Europe at the referendum on 23rd June! I think an early exit for our football team could easily see a big swing to the out vote and vice versa. Six months of campaigning reduced to the outcome of a few simple games of football! In the meantime, we will be getting on with enjoying a busy summer with local events galore. The Malton Food Festival is a yearly highlight and is all happening over the bank holiday weekend. As usual there are stalls for all and why not have a go at our Malton Town Trivia Quiz over the weekend? It’s a family trail and the perfect way to discover

Malton’s hidden gems and win a great family prize! Last month Harmonia Ladies Choir excelled at the National Choirs Day at the Eskdale Festival. The 55 choir members (including myself!) and directed by Alison Davis, sang their hearts out and won 3 trophies. This was a huge achievement as we’re not an auditioned choir and whilst many people have sung previously, many haven’t. I think my ears are still ringing from our collective scream when we won! Amateur singing seems to be exploding in popularity and rightly so as it has been shown to improve both psychological and physical health. My Thursday night rehearsals are the highlight of my busy weeks, a time to focus on the music and forget all the other stuff. You can come and see us in Malton on 18th June (see page 44). Don’t forget to celebrate your Dad on Sunday 16th June. Buy him some beers and snacks and sit him down to watch the football in peace!

mined efforts were made to start again. Whilst the process of obtaining Lottery Fund approval was lengthy and complicated the project was finally given a grant and work started in April 2015 with completion at the end of November.

On January 30th Wintringham officially opened its new Community Hall on the site of the old wooden building which had been there since 1953 and had been unusable for some time.

The main hall is 20 metres by 10 metres and has a badminton court laid out. There is a fully fitted kitchen and a separate meeting room, dedicated to Chris Yates who initiated the original idea. The hall has a large capacity suitable for meetings, classes, parties, concerts, celebrations and indoor sports etc. There are two tennis tables available. There is good parking and disabled access.

The project started in 2002 but was shelved a few years later due to various circumstances. In 2008 it emerged there was Lottery money available for such projects and so, with a new committee, on which three still serve from the original, deter-

SOCIETY’S SUPERHEROES BY MARY MAHON

Undeniably, superheroes have become an intrinsic part of our culture. Every few months we can enjoy a new blockbuster hit from Marvel or DC, whether it’s an innovative adaption of an old hero reborn in a fresh way, a continuation of a never-ending film series or something entirely new - there’s so much to choose from! Because of this superhero craze, when people hear the word ‘hero’, it’s generally affiliated with men and women running around in spandex and a cape, sporting powers, gadgets and ninja skills. However, I’ve realised that as you get older, you begin to realise that there are real life superheroes all around us, and just like Superman’s façade as ‘Clark Kent’, they’re hidden in plain sight… With each day lacking the security and the promise that they’ll see the next tomorrow, soldiers are the ultimate, self-sacrificing heroes, dedicating themselves to their country and their people. Scientists and inventors: they serve the greater good through devoting themselves to research in order for us to better our world. These heroes are helping our world in so many countless ways, all the way from biological breakthroughs that save millions of lives, to physics phenomena that open our eyes to the secrets of the universe, to inspiring inventions that change life as we know it. Protestors are true reflections of people who stand up for what they believe is right even when the whole world seems to be against them, whether it’s fighting for the smaller things like the protection of a certain woodlands, or world-changing movements like

12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

the Civil Rights Movement under the iconic hero Martin Luther King Jr. Similarly, there are so many charity workers in our society who willingly give up their time for the greater good with no personal or material gain, and those who fight physical and mental conditions are irrefutably heroic, spending their time constantly fighting internal battles with every ounce of their strength. Although they may not have vivacious costumes or superhuman gifts, heroes are all around us, and it’s because of them that we have such an incredible world to live in. Next time you see these cinematic superheroes plastered to the sides of buses, dominating the internet and sported all over clothing, maybe spare a thought to the real superheroes that live amongst us.

#RYEDALECYCLING MASCOTS ON TOUR!

Check us out on Approved Installer

Two giant puppets have taken to the road as Mascots for Ryedale Cycle Forum. The mascots would be happy to come along to any local event to get people talking about local cycle trails, and to raise funds for paths and signs. You’ll see from the picture that they are BIG! They are very light, and can be carried on an adult’s shoulders, if there other helpers alongside to keep them steady. But they can also just sit on a large chair or bench, where children seem to really enjoy looking at them. Years ago we could get on our bikes for a short journey to friends, or the shops, and think nothing of it. These days the main roads are so busy, that many people are too nervous to cycle. It’s such a shame, because Ryedale does have lots of lovely quiet lanes for cycling, but getting to them is often too dangerous, especially with children. Ryedale Cycle Forum are looking to raise funds for cycle tracks to help residents and visitors get out and about by bicycle, and would welcome suggestions about where such routes are needed. If you have an idea of an event that the Ryedale Cycle Forum mascots could attend, please contact Helen Gundry, Kirkbymoorside Environment Group, 01751 432447 or email helenspost@hotmail.co.uk

Beautiful wrought ironwork

D

avid Stephenson Artist Blacksmith specialises in using traditional hand forging techniques to make a range of bespoke sculptural and functional items at his forge in Lockton. David says “I’m inspired by the physical nature of the creative process. Forging hot metal is about responding to the movement of the material and actually treating it gently. Brute force is rarely the best way to produce beautiful work. I’m constantly learning to use heat carefully and use the hammer blows in just the right way. “I actually trained at university as a palaeontologist and then taught in primary schools for many years. I re-trained by working

for several blacksmiths and then went to the national blacksmithing school. “The work I now do falls into several types. I produce a range of smaller domestic items for shops and galleries including fireside furniture, hooks, candlesticks and sculptures. I also produce work to specific private commission such as gates, railings, fire-guards and pond covers. I particularly enjoy working with clients to produce designs which match their location and fit their budget.” In addition to this David takes on larger public and private commissions. His clients include large estates, national heritage organisations and public authorities.

A part of the business which has grown significantly in recent years is running blacksmithing courses. “I particularly enjoy this aspect as it enables me to share my enthusiasm and continue my teaching practise,” says David. The day courses make a great present for birthdays or Christmas. For bespoke hand-forged ironwork or blacksmithing courses, call David on 01751 460252. www. davidstephenson.org.uk

PROUD DAD

ELECTRIC GARAGE DOORS

Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church There are two types of pride: pride that elevates us above others and pride that elevates others above ourselves. When we elevate ourselves, we build an ivory tower from which we can only look down on others. We all know proud people who are out of reach, arrogant, self reliant and unwilling to listen. This pride always goes before a fall. Yet there is another pride that doesn’t elevate us, but celebrates and strengthens others. When you are bursting with pride and ready to shout it from the mountain top so all the world can hear how the achievements of others have made us glad. This time next month, my eldest daughter will be married and I’m a very proud Dad. As the day has got closer I have experienced a variety of emotions. I’ve worried as a parent that I have missed out some essential life skills. I’ve been excited at the thought of a healthier bank balance. I have been alarmed at the thought of giving the hand of my daughter to a young man, however nice he is. But the biggest emotion I have experienced is pride. I am proud of the beautiful young lady she has become, I’m proud of her decision to commit to marriage, but most of all I’m proud she is and will always be my daughter. On the day Jesus was baptised there was a loud voice from His Father in heaven, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with Him I am well pleased.’ Some say this proves the Father speaks with a cockney accent! I digress! Jesus was about to start His earthly ministry but the Father could not hold back His pride and literally shouted it from heaven for the world to hear. I wonder how often Jesus found strength by remembering these words and the pride of His Father? Are you proud? Not in the self elevating way, but proud of the achievements of others? Let’s celebrate, encourage and strengthen each other by shouting it from the mountain tops for all to hear.

HOW TO SAVE INHERITANCE TAX WITHOUT GIVING EVERYTHING AWAY Straight talking Yorkshire Estate Planner, Julie Wilson shares her top strategies to avoid this unfair tax and save your family £thousands I’m passionate about saving families Inheritance Tax. Tax is the price we have to pay to live in a civilised society, it’s true. But Inheritance Tax is unfair because it taxes money that’s already been taxed once, probably more. And it penalises ordinary people who have made smart decisions around money. That’s why I’ve built my online course, where I show you: 

How Inheritance Tax works and when it’s payable

Why it’s unfair and how Government wastes it

Simple steps to calculate your own tax bill

Straight forward solutions to pay less tax without giving everything away

Real life case studies show you how ordinary families saved £thousands

By the end of the course, you’ll be able to calculate your own tax bill and understand how Inheritance Tax could affect your family. More importantly, you’ll learn simple, Government approved ways to reduce your bill and save your family £thousands. This course could save you thousands, but sells for a mere £99. For a limited period I can offer HandyMag readers a special discount, so you only pay £29. Plus I’m giving you my personal no quibble money back guarantee. If you don’t agree this course could save you £thousands, I’ll give you a full refund, no questions asked. To sign up, go to the website below, and enter HMIHT as the Promo Code to get your discount

Spring into summer with music at the Milton Rooms From cello to synthesiser, banjo to violin, and classic to folk, the Milton Rooms early summer programme has it all. After previous sell-out performances at the Milton Rooms, firm favourites Blackheart return to the Studio on June 3rd. Steve Hackett of Genesis has described their music as “beautiful, powerful and inspiring”. They recently won Best British Duo in the UK Exposure Music Awards. Rick Pilkington and Chrissie Mostyn, play a heavenly fusion of acoustic folk, intelligent pop and classical composition. They feature a stunning array of instruments including acoustic and electric guitars, piano, percussion, vintage synthesisers, mandola, and flugelhorn, plus Chrissie’s incredibly haunting vocals. Award-winning Canadian songwriter, Ian Sherwood, offers music to lift the soul when his UK tour comes to Malton on June 4th. Ian takes catchy melodies and heart-breaking stories and mixes them with intricate guitar playing, saxophones and pop/rock grooves.

LATEST THINKING IN DENTISTRY Dear Reader, My nurse Jan and I recently attended the 2016 Dentistry Show at the NEC in Birmingham. Contrary to popular belief there are new and exciting by Christine Parker developments in the dental BDS (GDC 72136) business every week and whilst we are still awaiting the development of the elusive ‘quiet drill’ which makes no sound and the ability to fully repair teeth to be available on a global scale, there were plenty of ideas and information being bounced around.

INFO LINE 01653 698 899 BOX OFFICE 01653 600 008 www.palacemalton.info

PARKINSON’S RYEDALE SUPPORT GROUP

We are a small friendly group that meet once a month on the second Thursday of each month at the Trinity Methodist Church Hall in Norton at 2pm. We have various speakers and twice a year plan a meal out in the Ryedale area. Dr Steve Smith will be attending our meeting on 14th July and will be giving an annual update on his research into Parkinson’s. The group consists of people who have Parkinson’s and also their carers/relatives. We welcome anyone that is affected by the condition. If you have any queries or would like more information, please ring Gill on 07794 439356

For example, did you know that the main reason for children to have a general anaesthetic in this country is for the removal of their teeth, this shocking statistic has barely changed in 30 years. Here at Howardian Dental we pride ourselves on being involved in the prevention of oral disease as much as its treatment. Much of our appointment is spent homing in on specific causes of dental disease in each patient so we can tailor the advice we give to each one. As a child I was aways told not to eat so many sweeties (my teeth were clean but I still needed lots of fillings) it wasn’t until I went to University and it was explained that it was how often I was eating and drinking that was causing the problem. I actually had few sweets but tended to snack a lot on savoury items. The penny dropped and since then 2 fillings in 20 years (both fractures).

It’s not magic it’s science So if you’d like your dentist to take the time to find out what is really causing your problems and help you do something about it call Jan at Howardian Dental.

NEWSLETTER SPRING 2016

york | against | cancer Registered Charity Number 1130835

Smile, please! Julie Harrison, partner Christopher and son Henry are the picture of happiness after what’s been a tumultuous year for this York Against Cancer supporter and her young family.

GIVE AND TAKE

Julie Harrison was a York Against Cancer fundraiser, then became a user of its services. She sees the charity from both sides. It should have been the happiest day of Julie Harrison’s life. But last May, on the day she was due to marry partner Christopher Blackburn, she was being treated for the breast cancer she’d found only weeks before. “I was in the shower and I felt a lump,” she said. “I knew I needed to go to the doctor but at that time I didn’t really think it could be anything. But I saw the doctor and within a week they had got me to hospital. I had a mammogram and a biopsy, went into a room afterwards to see the consultant and he said: ‘I am not completely sure, but I think that this is cancer.” He was right. For Julie, mum of four-year-old Henry, it was the end of wedding preparations and the start of months of surgery and radiotherapy. She called off her ceremony and broke the news to friends and family. Thankfully, no cancer was found in Julie’s lymph nodes and after a mastectomy and reconstruction she needed only radiotherapy. She’d been a longstanding fundraiser, supporting York Against Cancer because of the support her aunt received while a cancer patient years before.

Now she was a user of the charity, with advice, support and therapy at York’s Cancer Care Centre and a stay at our respite apartment in Whitby. It made her even more passionate about us. “The Cancer Care Centre is a fantastic, fantastic place,” she said. “The staff there must be trained specially, they are so lovely. It doesn’t feel clinical, it feels really nice.” Julie also found the charity’s respite apartment a tremendous boost. “It is an amazing apartment,” she said. “To get that rest at the end of the treatment and to have my family with me… just to see them smile is wonderful, because it’s not just you going through this, it is everyone. “You come to realise how much a local charity can mean to people. Large charities do a lot, but a local charity is something to be proud of, you can really see the benefits.” Julie says she is on the mend now. She’s back at work and taking part in fundraisers again – York Rocks Against Cancer and York Swings Against Cancer are in her diary for 2016. Last month included an even more important date for Julie. She became a bride at last, getting married almost exactly a year after her wedding should have gone ahead.

HELLO RYEDALE! Welcome to York Against Cancer’s newsletter. We’re the charity that funds local cancer care, education and research, and if you are treated at York Hospital you could get practical support from us. DID YOU KNOW: We give 100 cancer patients and their families a FREE short break in our Whitby apartment every year. Our minibus covers 16,000 miles a year taking cancer patients to St James Hospital in Leeds for their radiotherapy treatments.

The Jack Birch Unit within the Biology department at the University of York is where our acclaimed research is undertaken.

This year, 2,677 five-year-olds in 83 primary schools received FREE sun hats as part of our annual sun awareness campaign.

We have 135 collection cans in local shops, pubs, clubs, chemists and newsagents. Can you help us get more cans in your local community?

We are not affiliated with any other charity. York Against Cancer is an independent charity and receives no government funding.

We only employ three full-time and four part-time members of staff, keeping our administration costs to a minimum.

The Cancer Care Centre at York Hospital was established by us in 1997 and we continue to pay the salaries of the two administrators.

We hope you enjoy reading this newsletter. If you would like to be kept even more up to date, it’s easy thanks to our monthly e-newsletter. Just send an email to news@yorkagainstcancer.org.uk and we’ll add you to our subscribers.

A hundred per cent of the profit from the sales in our shops contributes to the work of the charity - we have two shops, one in Huntington, on North Moor Road, and one in the main foyer of York Hospital.

You can also find out more about us on our website, yorkagainstcancer.org.uk, and through our facebook and twitter pages.

A CHARITY CHALLENGE FULFILLED A charity challenge fulfilled Golfing enthusiasts delivered on a year-long challenge to raise £10,000 for us. Ralph Magee, Captain at York Golf Club, joined Ladies’ Captain Hilary Bogue in raising the cash to mark the 125th anniversary of the Strensallbased club. Events included a golf showman’s performance, a bold attempt to play the course backwards and a raffle during a visit by TV

sports commentator Guy Mowbray. Ralph, a director at York Against Cancer, said: “Members here know that this is a favourite good cause, and they are glad to put their hands in their pockets time and time again.” Ralph is organising another event to raise cash for York Against Cancer: the charity’s Annual Golf Day on July 7. Teams of four are being sought to compete, for a joint fee of £240, which includes lunch and dinner. Entries

are welcome from male, female and mixed teams. To apply, please contact 01904 764466 or email office@ yorkagainstcancer.org.uk. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 39

RECORD BREAKERS!

TO YORK WITH LOVE

York Against Cancer has broken a fundraising record thanks to shoppers at a leading city store.

Business professionals and charity workers are licensed to thrill with plans for a glamorous evening to boost the fight against cancer.

Customers at John Lewis at the Vangarde Centre, York, were so generous to us that we’ve received the biggest donation the store has ever made to a single charity under its Community Matters scheme. Under this programme, shoppers are invited to choose a charity to support by dropping tokens into one of three boxes representing three good causes over a three-month period. During our time as a nominated charity, we attracted enough tokens to give us almost 50 per cent of the public vote – and we received £1,461 of the £3,000 available. Presenting a cheque to General Manager Julie Russell, John Lewis York Manager Ben Pearson said: “Community Matters is all about helping smaller local charities that don’t get all of the press and funding that some of the larger national charities receive, and we’re so pleased John Lewis York can make a difference to the York community.” Community Liaison Co-ordinator Aileen Stables added: “Our customers really got behind the charity.” For York Against Cancer, Julie Russell said: “We’re thrilled that John Lewis’s shoppers wanted to support us as they did, and grateful to the shop for giving us this great opportunity.”

The Knavesmire Branch of Business Network International, Barclays staff and York Against Cancer raised a magnificent £15,000 with a vintage Hollywood ball in York last November. And they are so delighted with their success that they are joining forces again to hold a James Bond ball at York Racecourse this November. “We had terrific support from businesses, individuals and groups throughout York for our Vintage event,” said Julie Russell, general manager at York Against Cancer. “Everyone had such a great time that we are confident they will want to relive the experience with a James Bond-themed ball this autumn.” Barclays Business Manager Kate Fairweather added: “We are proud to be supporting York Against Cancer again with their charity ball event.” Tickets will soon be on sale for the event, to be held on November 19. MARY MASEFIELD

SIR DONALD BARRON

York Against Cancer has lost one of its staunchest supporters in Mary Masefield.

Sir Donald Barron, a patron of York Against Cancer, has died peacefully at home in Bishopthorpe.

Mary enjoyed a lovely family Christmas in Perth with her daughters and grandchildren. On the 27th December Mary went shopping in Perth with daughter Nicola but returned home feeling unwell. She was quickly taken into Perth RI and despite everyone’s best efforts, died very suddenly in the early morning of 28th December. We later found out that her death was caused by meningococcal septicaemia. Mary had been a volunteer for our charity from its inception; she was moved to join after losing her brother, Tom Piercy, many years ago to lung cancer. She was known to many through her fundraising, from street collections to events such as a millinery show at the Jaipur restaurant late last year, the last event in which she took part for us. It was a lovely event with some super hats on show and the event raised about £1,600. General Manager Julie Russell paid tribute to Mary. She said: “Mary was a lovely lady. She thrived on being busy, she organised an event for YAC every year or so and her events were always enjoyed by her many friends here at the charity.” Born and bred in the Stockton Lane area of York, Mary was a State Registered Nurse and a midwife until her marriage to Richard, after which she devoted herself to raising her family; the couple have two daughters, Nicky and Alex. Mary is also survived by a sister, Jane, who lives in Norwich. As well as volunteering for York Against Cancer, Mary was a guide at Nunnington Hall. She was a keen golfer and gardener, and a gifted flower arranger who often created displays for her local church in Sheriff Hutton; she will be especially remembered for her amazing attention to detail and flair in putting together the Richard III exhibition in 2014. Mary’s husband Richard said: “She touched many in the wider community and will be greatly missed by family and friends; she was one in a million.”

Sir Donald, 94, had been among our patrons from the establishment of the charity back in 1987, giving support to events such as our annual golf day. Professor Steve Leveson, Chairman of York Against Cancer, said: “Sir Donald was an ideal patron for this charity. From our earliest days he was supportive and keen to be involved in all aspects of our work. He did much to promote our cause and inform the many people that he met about what we do and how they might help. “He was a keen attender of all our fund-raising functions including our gala balls, dinners and the annual golf day. It was always reassuring to have such a delightful man as a patron. He will be greatly missed.” Scottish born and educated, Sir Donald was chairman of the former Midland Bank and helped establish the University of York, where our pioneering research is conducted. He was former chairman of Rowntree Mackintosh and of the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, and chaired the trust that created York’s Millennium Bridge. Sir Donald was knighted in 1972 after Rowntree received the Queen’s Award for Exports. He married his wife Gillian in 1956. The couple have five children: sons Alastair, David and Roderick, and daughters Felicity and Julia.

ALL THAT GLITTERS… “Today, we’re going to talk about germs,” declares Miss Tams as a swarm of children settles into a semi-circle on the classroom floor.

“Hands up who had a cold before Christmas?” she asks, and hands thrust skyward. These youngsters at Wheldrake with Thorganby School are familiar with germs, even if they don’t know much about them. All that is about to change. As well as being this class’s teacher, Sophie Tams serves on York Against Cancer’s Education Committee, and she devised this lesson for the charity’s mission to teach children about healthy lifestyles, part of the battle against cancer. The lesson forms part of a course the charity has produced to help primary schools educate youngsters about hygiene and health. As she teaches, Miss Tams pretends to sneeze, showering the children with glitter. Laughter erupts and they all enjoy the joke before Miss Tams explains that this is how germs spread, showing her hand glitter-covered palm and touching hands with a pupil, 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

who then shows how it, too, is now coated in glitter. “Ugh!” cry the children in disgust, as Miss Tams asks the pupil to wash her hands. She returns to show that the glitter germs have gone. Later, the children learn what germs look like – not green cartoon characters, but microscopic bacteria. They learn to avoid catching and transmitting germs by using tissues, not touching their noses and eyes, and washing their hands with soap and water. It’s been fun, and the class has had its first lesson in healthy living. Primary and secondary school resources are available from York Against Cancer. Three Trophies for Harmonia Choir

armonia Ladies Choir, based in Norton, are celebrating after winning three trophies at the National Choir in the Eskdale Festival in April. The community choir was formed in 2008 by local singing teacher Alison Davies and has gone from strength to strength. It now boasts 57 members of all ages and from all over Ryedale. A first place in the Songs from the Shows Class and Christmas in April were exciting enough for the choir but there was a huge cheer when they also won in the evening Recital Class.

Alison said “The choir have worked so hard to reach such a high standard of performance and thoroughly deserved these trophies. Why not join Harmonia for a fantastic evening of songs from shows, gospel, jazz, folk and pop in Malton at St Leonards Church on 18th June.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

GARDEN VIEW The difficult patch Every garden has a couple of problem patches. I’m often asked which plants I’d recommend for a problem area and two which always crop up are damp shade and dry shade.

By Rachael Leverton

leaves and tiny blue flowers and A. reptans ‘Variegata’ is a pretty variegated cream and green variety.

Let’s deal with damp shade first. It’s actually less of a problem than you might expect. Okay, you’ll never grow a good lawn there, bulbs will rot, and sun-loving annuals won’t thrive, but there are loads of plants that will look wonderful. The trick in the case of damp shade is to go for leaf colour, plant form, and texture.

Astilbe does very well in damp shade; it has impressive red, pink or white flowery plumes depending on the variety chosen. Hostas are also a good choice, though in damp conditions you’ll need to be on slug-watch! If your shade is very dense then don’t choose golden varieties as the colour will fade. Hostas look wonderful planted with primulas, which also do well in these conditions.

Ajuga is excellent for ground cover. A. metallica has purple

Some ferns love damp shade, including the Maidenhair fern,

Adiantum pedatum; most varieties of dryopteris, and the ostrich feather fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. Dry shade is definitely trickier. I don’t recommend fighting Mother Nature but I do think dry shade is one area where she sometimes needs a hand, so enrich dry soil with compost, well-rotted horse manure, or spent mushroom compost before planting, as this will encourage some moisture retention.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE Bergenias are attractive but tough enough for dry shade and their leathery leaves colour well in the autumn, particularly Bergenia cordifolia purpurea. The pink flowered varieties are the most commonly seen but there are red and white varieties too. I have a ‘Bressingham White’ which is quite lovely. My favourite plant for dry shade is the Euphorbia. Not all varieties are suited to these conditions but E. amygdaloides with it’s red stems and lime-green flower heads will generally do very well.

Solomon’s Seal (polygonatum multiflorum) is another standby. It looks like a large lily of the valley and the variegated variety is very pretty.

RESIN DRIVES PATHS & PATIOS Goes over existing surfaces

The trick with problem areas is to embrace them as part of your garden Treated as a gardening challenge they can be fun to plant and you’ll feel a tremendous sense of achievement when you do succeed.

SUMMER IS HERE AND IT’S SHOW TIME FOR RYEDALE DOG RESCUE! We have a packed summer of fundraising ahead and we want all dog owners to start getting their faithful friends spruced up for our fun dog shows. As a small team of volunteers we rely on the success of these shows to raise vital funds for the rescue, so if you think your dog has the ‘most beautiful eyes’, the ‘waggiest tail’ or is a contender for the ‘best biscuit catcher’ then why not bring them along to our shows and try and win a rosette or two. There will be lots of fun games to take part in, stalls and a chance to have a go at agility so they promise to be a great family day out...We look forward to seeing you there! Every single penny we raise is spent on rescuing, caring for and re-homing abandoned and unwanted dogs.

OVERWEIGHT HORSES You may have heard the alarming statistic of Diabetes prevalence doubling in the last few years in the human population, and horrifying pictures of obese dogs and cats are frequently on our screens. Sadly the problem of overweight horses is also one that must be addressed as these individuals are prone to dreadful painful and sometimes deadly problems like laminitis, arthritis, heart disease and hyperlipaemia (fat in the bloodstream). Before domestication horses lived on extensive areas as opportunistic grazers and the wild horse gained weight in summer and lost it in leaner times over winter. Clearly this happens less readily when modern horses are fed, rugged and housed over winter and they become increasingly overweight leading to a trilogy of equine metabolic syndrome, obesity, insulin resistance and an increased circulating cortisol which can spark off laminitis.

Clients often tell me that they struggle but here is a before and after photo of a successful pony ‘Dusty’ who has recently struggled with a painful bout of laminitis where the pedal bone had rotated within the hoof. A strict diet regime has been followed and within 3 weeks he lost 37 kilograms and is beginning to look more svelte-there is still a way to go but it can be done! Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

COMMON GROUND FOR LOCAL AUTHOR In partnership with Ryedale Book Festival, the National Park is very excited to be welcoming award-winning local author, Rob Cowan, to The National Park Visitor Centre, Danby where he will be talking about his work at an event 2 – 4pm on 19 June. Sally Smith, Events and Exhibition Coordinator at the National Park said: “With the spectacular backdrop of the countryside, the Visitor Centre provides the perfect place for Rob to share his work. We’re so pleased to be working with Ryedale Book Festival to bring this event to visitors and are

74 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

really looking forward to working together on future projects.” Blurring the boundaries of memoir, natural history and novel, Rob’s book, entitled Common Ground, offers nothing less than an enthralling new way of writing about nature and our experiences within it. We encounter the edgeland’s inhabitants in immersive, kaleidoscopic detail as their voices and visions rise from the fields and woods: beasts, insects, plants and people – the beggars, sages and lovers across the ages. Book Festival Director, Sarah Tyson, added: “Anyone who marvels at the natural world is in for a treat and should not miss this opportunity to meet Rob and enjoy his stories in such a

wonderful setting. We’re delighted to be working with the National Park as the North York Moors are the perfect place for Rob’s event – right in the heart of the nature.” Rob Cowan is an award-winning journalist and writer and an author of regular columns on nature and travel for the Independent, Independent on Sunday and the Telegraph. Anyone interested in attending the event, which is £5 per person, is asked to visit www. ryedalebookfestival. com/whats-on/ rob-cowen. Or telephone 01439 772738. Advanced booking advised.

Speedwell Blue (Ode to Sally) By The Pastoral Poet The Summer sky is speedwell blue, And swallows cleave the balmy air. The turtle dove’s caressing coo, Is softer than a whispered prayer. And Sally, tender in my arms; Lost in the landscape of some dream, I cup her face with gentle palms, Fearful I might break the theme. The loving cup is over brimmed, And topped anew each time I drink. A prized possession, golden rimmed, Whose heady contents never shrink. When swallows wing to warmer climes, And leave the headlands they once knew. Not caring we of changing times, When skies are ever speedwell blue. Clive Milson
