At the time of writing, we’re in the throes of exam season in our house. Our last ever term involved with schools. It’s the end of an era; gone is balancing school pick-ups and holidays with work. I’ll have to find alternative distractions!

For those students leaving this summer, good luck with those exams. For those parents now less needed, deep breaths and remember, that whatever happens, it will be fine! At the time of writing, the election campaigns are just getting started. On announcing the election, it was as if the country took a resigned groan at the opportunity. But anyway, we should all take our chance to vote and trust that this election gives some end to the interminable talk on referendums where ‘no’ is not ‘no’ and ‘yes’ is at best at ‘maybe’! On a brighter note, there are two very different festivals happening in the area this month. Tickets are on sale now for the Ryedale Festival, which starts in July with great music and top class performers at beautiful venues around Ryedale. The brand new Atlas Festival, a ‘travelbased music and performance extravaganza’, promises entertainment from around the world. This starts on 29th July at Scampston Hall. See page 46 for details. Don’t forget to celebrate your Dad on Sunday 18th June. With five loud and opinionated daughters, mine has always needed appreciating! Happy Father’s Day to all you Dads out there! Finally, congratulations to Harmonia Choir who won three trophies at the Eskdale Festival in April, retaining the coveted recital class. What a day!! “Pop in to Shop” car parking spaces come to Helmsley

n idea put forward by the Helmsley in Business group has been given the go ahead by Ryedale District Council and will see residents and visitors able to park free of charge for a maximum of 20 minutes in designated bays, to give them time to pop in to use local facilities and businesses. Seven new ‘Quick Stop’ spaces are now available in the Market Place, and will be clearly marked in yellow along the side of the car park closest to Cut Price Books and Spear Travel. Two spaces are for blue badge holders and five for general use. Although all drivers will still need to get a ticket from the machine, as long as they stay 20 mins or less no payment will be required. It is hoped the spaces will stop cars parking dangerously and illegally at the end of Borogate to go to the shops and Post Office, and blocking access, or in the side streets around the town centre. The town team which has achieved this is made up of all relevant local authorities, Helmsley Town Council,

North Yorkshire County Council, Ryedale District Council and the North York Moors National Park as well as the Helmsley in Business Group. Helmsley is now being used as a model for other towns across the district in the “town team” approach, designed to take action quickly to make multi agency improvements where possible. As with all off-street parking in Helmsley, use of the spaces will be patrolled and enforced by Scarborough Borough Council from 8am to 6.30pm. It is planned that, before long, the scheme will be extended to cover more spaces north of the Market Place, on land owned by the North Yorkshire County Council with the same ticket system. VOTE DI KEAL - the candidate who delivers for local people

Campaigning Di Keal has a record of service to the Ryedale community that is second to none - now she is fighting to champion the rights of local people as your MP. Di has lived in the area for 25 years with husband, Howard, where they have brought up three daughters in Norton. She is a town and district councillor and has built a reputation for campaigning on the local issues that matter – doing more for local people than all the other candidates put together.

Di’s priorities for Malton & Thirsk: Fracking – Di is totally opposed to fracking and is campaigning with local people against the industry in Ryedale and nationally. She will continue to fight this hugely damaging, nonsustainable industry to prevent the industrialisation of our countryside. NHS – Liberal Democrats will fund gaps in NHS and social care budgets by putting a penny on income tax. In Yorkshire and Humber this will raise an extra £236 million for the local NHS

and almost £53 million for social care annually. Schools – Our schools are threatened with huge budget cuts under the Conservatives. Malton School faces a cut of £339,207 or £620 per pupil by 2019, leading to the loss of 9 teachers. Primary and secondary schools across the constituency all face similar cuts. This has to stop for the sake of the future of our children and grandchildren – Di will fight to ensure our schools receive the funding they need. Pensions – Di is committed to safeguarding pensions from threatened Tory cuts. The Liberal Democrats delivered the ‘triple lock’ guaranteeing better pensions, stopping cuts under decades of Labour and Tory rule. Di will fight to protect pensions, delivering an extra £772 a year by 2021 for each of the 26,650 people receiving the state pension in Thirsk & Malton, and to block Tories from smashing the triple lock.

Di’s record of delivering for local people: • Di organised a £450,000 buy-out with club members to save Ryedale Indoor Bowls Club and create a community hub featuring bowls, a dance school, playgroup and function suite. • Together, Di and Howard Keal fought for the £10.3 million flood alleviation scheme that today protects Malton, Norton and Old Malton from major flooding • Di secured a £1 million contribution from Ryedale District Council towards the flood protection for Pickering. • Di is a founder member of Action on Traffic – Malton and Norton established to reduce congestion and pollution levels in the twin towns. • Castle Garden – a park in the heart of Malton – one of Di’s projects among many more including fighting to find a home for The Woodham Stone – social history collection dating back centuries.

There is no other candidate with a record of public service to the community anything like Di’s – no other parliamentary candidate who has done more to deserve your vote on June 8th.

arie Curie is calling on people in Ryedale to hold a Blooming Great Tea Party in aid of the charity this June. From 23rd - 25th June, Marie Curie is encouraging people to get together with friends, family or colleagues to host a tea party, bake sale or special tea break to raise funds. The money raised will help Marie Curie provide vital care and support for people living with a terminal illness, and their families. This year, the charity is being supported by John Lewis in their fundraising efforts, with every store getting involved and holding their own tea parties on

9th June, as well as donating a percentage of sales from some of their National Treasures product range. Jennifer Carmichael, Marie Curie Community Fundraiser in North Yorkshire said: “Holding a Blooming Great Tea Party is so easy, you just pick a date, send out some invites and have a cuppa and some cake between 23rd- 25th June (or if those dates don’t work, then do it whenever you like!). It seems the further we venture into 2017, the further we seem to plunge into political pandemonium! Yet it’s not just the big, political decisions we make that affect us; every choice has the potential to shape our lives in big or little ways. Yet, whilst the future is brimming with endless possibilities, the exams we sit in our teenage years can enormously influence the direction of our future!

The vast spectrum of subjects available means there’s something to inspire everyone, yet the way in which subject knowledge is annually tested inspires few. Churning out paper after paper, exam boards sometimes seem like factories, squeezing and squashing students into moulds of their design. Their mark schemes are so precise, they often test memory more than analysis, creativity or true understanding, alongside the students’ ability to stay cool under pressure. Take technology – most intricate devices are designed in a certain way for certain purposes. You wouldn’t bin your toaster because it wouldn’t play your favourite movie, or trash your TV because it wouldn’t toast your bread! And while many pieces of tech are made multi-purpose, they can’t be expected to excel in everything. My phone is great at many things, but it can’t do the washing up! So why are teens tested so strictly in every topic? If you struggle in exam conditions but blossom in creativity, what good are exams for you? Yet whilst they can be petrifying for some, they do have their benefits for others. For many, exams are positive; they’re reflections of years of hardwork and learning. Yet we have multiple choices; whilst school and exams are important, we can choose whether we let our results define our future. Everyone has their own special qualities that are ungradable, like the ability to make people laugh and smile. I believe that ultimately, life is not a materialistic competition, but a series of choices we make in order to try and find personal happiness. Answers on page 79

Malton in Bloom update I

f you have taken a look at the centre of Malton recently you’ll have noticed that it really is blooming! The Malton in Bloom team have been working hard over the last few months to get the town ready for judging on 15th July. As well as growing plants for flower beds, the team has also been growing with a large number of volunteers lending hands to growing, planting and tidying. Of course there is always room for more. If you’d like to help why not get in touch with the team. Alongside the huge number of hanging baskets appearing in the Market Place, there are other projects helping to bring the community together.

Malton Women’s Institute Sustainable Garden

This year, the WI is campaigning to help food poverty by asking all supermarkets to sign up to a voluntary agreement to avoid food waste, passing surplus food onto charities. The local branch will be planting in the bed at the top of Wheelgate outside JB Motors, opposite Sainsburys. The bed will be split into three sections to highlight the WI campaign; food poverty, food waste and honeybee-friendly plants. It is hoped that the garden will not only be beautiful but also sustainable and the edible plants will be harvested.

Michael Paley of Paley’s Greengrocers in the Market Place was particularly keen to help with this project as his father fought in the war. There are many people donating time and money to make sure Malton is looking at its best this summer. Malton and Norton Tidyup Group have a team of about 20 people who pick up huge amounts of litter in the area – over 1,000 bags since January 2013 – and have been working hard to keep Malton tidy in the run up to judging. The Derwent Diggers gardening group are taking on the planting of the troughs and planters on the platform at Malton’s lovely station and will be incorporating the colours of Transpennine Express into the planting scheme. Malton Flower Club have guaranteed a superb floral display located in and around the market square. It promises to be a blooming summer for Malton. the target in a gentle curve, the bend tightening as the bowl slows down. Secondly, bowling greens vary in pace: some greens are naturally faster than others and all tend to be fastest when dry. Thirdly, no green is perfect and each has its own idiosyncrasies so a bowl seemingly heading to the jack may suddenly veer off course. All helps to make the game an interesting challenge. Besides league matches most clubs offer social sessions suitable for beginners and those who like their games less demanding. All clubs in Ryedale welcome new members and have equipment, like spare bowls, that a visitor can use for practice.

owls is an enjoyable test of skill for all ages. At this time of year bowls clubs throughout Ryedale are looking at their best as a new outdoor season begins. It is time to enjoy the sunshine, the company and the exercise. Ryedale bowls clubs play in four leagues: Bata Gas, Hovingham, Huby and Ryedale Vets. Matches in the first three leagues are played in the evenings but those in the Ryedale Vets league, which is for ‘older’ players, are played on Wednesday afternoons. The clubs come not only from Ryedale towns and villages but also Thirsk, Easingwold and Wigginton. Village teams compete well against the town teams: Terrington are champions of the Huby league while both Swinton and Slingsby are high in the Vets league. Matches between two clubs involve twelve players from each club usually as four teams of three (‘triples’). In a triples match, the two sides play about 18 ‘ends’, bowling from one side of the ‘green’ to the other. During an end the three players from both sides each play three bowls, i.e. 18 bowls in all. Typically, a club match lasts about two hours. Bowls is a test of skills where not only do you (and your team) try to get your bowls closer to the target ‘jack’ than your opponents’ bowls but you also try to create problems for the opponents. Moreover, the challenges you face constantly change. Initially, the jack is unguarded but the player bowling the last (and often most important) bowl finds the jack protected by 17 other bowls. Even without an opponent, there are three challenges to overcome. Firstly, all bowls have an inbuilt ‘bias’ which causes them to travel towards

Brassed Off

ver its 138 year history, Stape Silver Band has played at many venues both locally, nationally and internationally. More used to the contest stage or concert platform, the band recently spent four nights over the Easter Weekend appearing at the Whitby Pavillion Theatre, in the Whitby Amateur Dramatic Society’s production of ‘Brassed Off’. ‘Brassed Off’ tells the story of the fictional Grimley Colliery Band during the closure of the pits in the 1990’s. The play directed by Katrina Stead required the female members of the band to be dressed as men with the addition of some dubious wigs. As well as performing some quite difficult music, including the march Florentiner, and the gallop from the William Tell Overture (The Lone Ranger theme), there was also the opportunity for band members to display their acting skills. The music featured also included Rodrigo’s Concerto De Aranjuez – affectionately referred to as ‘orange juice’ - which was performed by our very own ‘Gloria’ - Beth Breckon on Flugal Horn.

Nature writing, Poetry and a Tiger Hunt - all in a beautiful garden

North Yorkshire book festival and country house are working together to create a day of literary events to delight visitors of all ages, with a nature theme. On Sunday 25 June, the beautiful Walled Garden of Scampston Hall will open its gates to welcome five acclaimed writers whose work celebrates wildlife and nature. The special guests include Cumbrian writer Jacob Polley, who will be reading from his most recent book “Jackself” which explores English folklore. Jacob, not known for giving many live performances, was awarded the prestigious T. S. Elliot Prize for Poetry last year. Biologist and journalist Dr Amy-Jane Beer will be holding a half-day nature writing workshop, giving participants exclusive access to the stunning gardens to gain inspiration for their writing. There will be heaps to do for younger readers too, including story time and a tiger mask-making workshop with Waterstones Children’s Book Prize winner for ‘There’s a Tiger in the Garden’, Lizzy Stewart.

Ryedale Book Festival Director Sarah Tyson says, “To have five celebrated writers in such a splendid setting is very special. Scampston Walled Garden will the perfect place to appreciate some the work of our finest contemporary poets and nature writers. he UK Coach Rally is a showcase for coaching presenting and celebrating the very latest models in fleets up and down the country, and the coachbuilder’s art in preserving the best of the vehicles of the past. So to win an award at the Rally is a big deal! Congratulations, then, go to local coach firm Perrys Travel for winning the Jonckeere Trophy in this years’ event which took place in Blackpool on the first weekend in May. Perry’s, based on York Road Industrial Estate in Malton, have been operating coaches for nearly 60 years, but this was the first time they have entered the Rally. The Perry’s team was driver Merick Ballantyne who was joined by Paul Wilson, Ryan Perry and Dave Perry. They entered a 53 seater executive Volvo Jonckeere Coach, had spent many hours polishing and preparing the vehicle and were very pleased to be presented with the cup. Some of the UK’s most prestigious vehicles and operators attend the Rally every year and the Perry’s team had a very enjoyable weekend joining in the event. Hovingham Village Market Next market - Saturday 3rd June

n the first Saturday of every month, February through December (with an extra special Christmas Market on the third Saturday of December), Hovingham Village is the picturesque setting for their unique Award Winning Market. Hovingham is 18 miles North-East of York and 8 miles away from Helmsley and Malton. Hovingham’s Market Charter was dated 1256; however, with the arrival of the steam railway in Hovingham in 1853 that Market closed. The current Market developed from the 2009 Hovingham Community Plan when over 83% residents supported a Local Producers’ Market. The Market is run by a team of enthusiastic Volunteers; they start setting up at 3pm on Friday; by 10:30am on Saturday morning over 50 stallholders present their wares, championing local producers and local products, to the 800 plus visitors from all over North Yorkshire and further afield. Popular stalls run out early and the Market closes at 1:30pm.

The Market supports a Community Café that provides essential sustenance to visitors, stallholders and the volunteers. This is run by a rota of Community Groups and has raised over £73,000 for more than 40 Community Groups in the last 8 years. Local Community Groups can also run their own Community Stalls, for free, to raise their profile and valuable funds in the Community. The Market is the focal point and social meeting point for residents, and is now established as a vibrant and successful event always ready to welcome new visitors and stallholders; details on the www.hovingham-market.org.uk website.

Monday 5 June Tibet – The Roof of the World. Zara Fleming is an art consultant and exhibition curator specialising in the art and culture of Tibet, the Himalayan and Mongolia. She has worked for a number of distinguished institutions, leads tours abroad and has published many articles in the field of Buddhist art and culture. This lecture is a general introduction to the history, art and culture of this extraordinary land, lying deep in the heart of Central Asia surrounded by some of the highest mountains in the world. Despite its geographical inaccessibility, it developed a rich and vibrant Buddhist culture and artistic tradition. This lecture gives a brief overview of Tibetan history from the time of the great Tibetan Empire (6th – 9th century) up to the present day; explores the fascinating art and culture inspired by Buddhism, introduced from India in the 7th century, and gives an insight into the current political situation. Performing a wide range of material from gospel to musical theatre, folk and jazz, the choir is led by experienced music teacher Alison Davis.

Short Story Lost and Found

“A gentleman’s come in with a lost and found card for the window.” Carly was new to the job at the village newsagent, and felt as though she was constantly interrupting poor Frances with questions. “What should I say to him?” “Is he wearing a flat cap covered in badges?” Frances looked up from a pile of invoices. “Yes,” Carly said. “It keeps slipping over his eyes.” “That’s Mr Pemrose.” Frances took off her glasses and pushed back her chair. “I’ll be right there.” The gentleman in question was stood at the counter holding a crisp white postcard. He smiled at the sight of Frances. “I’m intrigued to hear what you’ve found this week, Mr Pemrose,” she said warmly. “I’m glad you asked,” he winked. “I found a cloud of starlings over Kirk’s Farm that looked, for a moment, like the ribbon on a birthday present.” “How wonderful,” Frances said taking the card from him. “Carly would you mind putting this in the window so that passers-by can see it?” Greatly puzzled, Carly took the neatly written card, and squeezed herself between the crisp boxes and the window to reach the lost and found display. “I’m afraid there are no spaces left. Are there any old cards that could be taken down?” “I’m sure there’s a few,” Frances said. “What do you think Mr Pemrose, shall we make some space?” “Oh yes.” The man chuckled as the hat again slipped over his eyes. “Maybe the one about the full moon that rolled up Copper Hill can go?” “Perhaps,” Frances said, “but has that snowy field

There were lost cats and bus passes, found cats and bus passes, and every now and then she recognised Mr Pemrose’s neat handwriting. These found things were strange. He’d found a cherry tree in full bloom in February, a double rainbow over the moor and the song of a thrush at midnight. Who could possibly have lost these things she wondered. Finally, she found a fading card about a field of candyfloss. “Would you like the old card back?” she asked, slipping the new card into the vacant slot. “You keep it,” he said, adjusting his hat while opening the door. With a ring of its bell he left. Carly dusted down her jeans. “Well I don’t know what he’s found,” she said, “but I strongly suspect he’s lost his marbles.” “Mr Pemrose is perfectly sane,” Frances laughed. “But why does he do it?” Carly asked. “No one has lost a flock of starlings, because they don’t belong to anyone, so how can he say that he’s found one?” “Because a year ago Mr Pemrose saw a card posted in our window which said ‘LOST – MY SENSE OF WONDER’,” Frances said. “Ever since then he’s been trying to reunite them with it.” “Weren’t you concerned for the person who posted it?” Carly worried. “Oh, no,” Frances laughed, “the card didn’t originally say that; condensation had made the ink run.” “So what did it really say?” Carly asked. “I can’t remember,” Frances frowned. “A lost umbrella maybe; nothing to lose any sleep over.” “Does Mr Pemrose know?” Carly asked. “If he does it hasn’t stopped him,” Frances smiled. “Besides, everyone likes to read his cards. ‘Should I neuter my dog or cat?’ This is a question that a vet gets asked every day and, in most cases, the answer is yes; let’s look at why.

he underlying principle of neutering is to prevent reproduction, however there are also many behavioural and health benefits. For example neutering your cat will reduce how much they will roam, and therefore reduce the risk of injury in road accidents. It will reduce fighting and the risk of wounds, abscesses and spread of infection such as FIV (feline AIDS). It will also eliminate the chance of unwanted or unexpected litters of kittens. Neutering male dogs will reduce their straying response to bitches in season. In terms of health, neutering will eliminate risk of testicular cancer, and dramatically reduce the risk of prostatic disease later in life. With female dogs similar benefits apply. Neutering prevents problems associated with oestrus (season or ‘heat’) which usually occurs every 6 months, where during this time bitches must be kept away from entire dogs and supervised closely. It also prevents the risk of false pregnancy which can occur after a season and may be harmful - it can be distressing for both dog and owner. Neutering eliminates the risk of pyometra, a lifethreatening womb infection that can develop later in life. It also reduces the chance of developing mammary cancer, especially if neutered before the first season.

There are some arguments against routine neutering but most are not justified when explored more closely, and certainly the benefits outweigh potential risks. Neutering can predispose to weight gain, but as long as diet is appropriately managed this is rarely a problem. In bitches, urinary incontinence later in life can occasionally be associated with neutering but this is a condition that is easily treated in most cases. Neutering is often recommended between 4-6 months of age for cats, and from 6 months for dogs, although this is decided on an individual and breed basis after discussion with your vet; advice should always be sought regarding the risks and benefits in individual cases. The procedure is usually performed as a day-case and patients often make a comfortable and quick recovery. ur senior cats and dogs who have been faithful friends for so long may now be feeling their years and becoming a bit stiff in their old joints. Join pain in older pets is often caused by osteoarthritis which is a chronic degenerative joint disease that affects soft tissues and bones. You may notice that your pet is less keen to jump, walk or play; they may sleep more and struggle to get up after resting. Their personality may change. Sometimes this is shown as nervousness, depression or even aggressive behaviour. If a particular joint is affected you may notice the animal licking this area more than normal. Some animals become less able to groom themselves, leaving their coat to become matted in places or look unkempt and dull. Their toileting habits may change, and cats may struggle to get in to high sided litter trays. Cats may not be able to climb to their favourite positions, or stretch and sharpen claws on scratching posts. You may be able to help ease joint pain and stiffness by making a few adjustments to your daily routines:

You may wish to start grooming them more often, and if you use a soft flexible brush like a ‘Zoom Groom’ you can gently massage them to ease discomfort. 10. For some, these changes may not be enough, and your pet may need support and treatment from your vet supplements or medication. Slingsby Flower and Garden Weekend

lingsby Church was the subject of repeated burglaries at the end of 2016 when most of the lead was stripped from the roof, causing major water damage. The estimated repair costs are around £150,000 with the local community hoping to raise at least £15,000 to support other sources of funding. This year marks both the 150th Anniversary of the rebuilding of All Saints Church and the 180th anniversary of the building of Slingsby Chapel. To celebrate, and to raise funds towards the replacement of the church roof there are plans for a grand flower festival and open gardens weekend. The festival opens on Friday 23rd June with a concert in All Saints Church featuring Malton School Jazz Band and our nationally known local soprano, Jane Goldsmith and Slingsby School Choir. Wine

If you have space for a good-sized container plant, then grow your own Datura or Brugmansia. Commonly known as the angel’s trumpet, these plants produce large elegant trumpet-shaped flowers with a wonderful perfume. Think too of plants with a relaxing feel to them, such as the grass Chasmanthium latifolium which grows to a height of about 45 cm and carries its flattened seed heads above the leaves. They move about delicately in the breeze and are almost impossible not to stroke. Artemisia abrotanum has soft grey-green leaves that will make you want to touch it, which releases a lovely aroma. The perfume of lavender is often used in aromatherapy because of its calming, soothing properties, so grow this in a sunny spot with free-draining soil, perhaps to edge a border. It not only has lovely, slightly furry or felt-like foliage but also produces that heavenly smell. Grasses and bamboos work well too; the rustling sound of bamboo foliage as the stems sway gently is one of the most relaxing sounds I know, and for smaller spaces many of the grasses form wonderfully

From Nuisance To Natural Resource Kirkbymoorside Environment Group

here was much publicity a few years ago about the problem of controlling bracken when the EU proposed a ban on the chemical normally used, something very relevant to our part of North Yorkshire, but a family farm has developed a way of turning this nuisance plant into a source of much needed income – and no need for the chemicals. Dalesfoot farm in Cumbria developed a way of using bracken and sheep’s wool to make an excellent compost that has shown very good results in trials. Not only does this turn a nuisance plant into a crop to be harvested but they also use the poorer quality sheep wool which provides extra income for local farms. The North York Moors have lots of sheep (with spare wool) and bracken (which is a nuisance). Could we learn something from Cumbria? The soil in Kirkbymoorside tends to be neutral towards alkaline and there is a lot of clay about but we do have a microclimate which is very good for fruit growing. To really test the value of a bracken/ sheep’s wool compost we needed a challenge so how about blueberries, a fruit which is known to prefer a more acidic soil? Local efforts to grow blueberries in the past have produced mixed results but simply growing them in a pot with ericaceous compost takes dedication to manage the watering and nutrients so would growing them in the ground with the addition of a sheep’s wool and bracken compost make the difference? This is what our blueberry trial has set out to answer using 3 different sites within a mile radius of Kirkby, all with slightly different soils, and testing the compost against control conditions on 3 varieties of blueberry. The trial is being supervised by the Northern Fruit Group and will last for several years but perhaps in the near future it might show that our bracken could become a valuable natural resource – and no need for the chemicals. ocal Annie Cooke is part of the team of amateur riders about to compete in the Ride of Their Lives Charity horserace at York Racecourse on Saturday 17th June. The riders will race thoroughbred racehorses in front of a bumper crowd, all in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support. Annie has been involved in a gruelling training regime in preparation for the race, while tirelessly raising funds alongside Claire Collins from Strensall to support this fantastic charity.
