elcome to the June edition.

Are you looking forward to another long summer of sport? We will be treated to football galore in Brazil, the usual tennis and cricket and of course the famous faces of cycling on our Yorkshire roads. Myself, I will be watching the Tour de France Grand Depart with interest, tennis and maybe even a bit of cricket (probably just the highlights if I’m honest and then only if there are any!). Football is not normally for me (I leave the room when Match of the Day comes on) but the World Cup could be different this time. For a nation that pins its hopes so much on sport, we can expect and dream! When my son was small I remember the World Cup being a valuable lesson in learning the flags of the world and national anthems – we had home-drawn flags everywhere! Whatever your sport, I hope you’ll accompany it with local food and drink and in our local pubs and bars who provide a great atmosphere even if you can’t get to the actual event itself. If you have passed our office this month, you’ll have noticed its smart new look, grey with pink stripes. Someone said it was ‘elephant ear’ coloured, which may not have been complimentary, but I rather like it! The window will be displaying posters for local events from this month, yet more publicity for those of you who have sent in event posters for the magazines. Our website has also undergone a makeover, courtesy of Gary our office neighbour at Computer FX, who has done a fabulous job of bringing it up to date. Here you will find everything that is in the magazine, including listings for local businesses, community groups and events. Well done to Fonawah Atang of Claxton, the winner of the April competition (answers on page 90). Until next month…

DYING TOO SOON OR LIVING TOO LONG?

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

Of course the nonsense of all this is that “average life expectancy” has nothing to do with you. You’re not average. According to the World Health Organisation the average life expectancy for women in the UK is 82.5 years. My Grandma turned 100 last August. Just as well she didn’t rely on Steve’s cockeyed calculations otherwise she’d have spent the last 18 years living on fresh air. Another 54,000 women aged 60 today are expected to see their 100th birthday. And these figures are rising all the time due to a combination of medical interventions and healthier lifestyles.

O

ne of our jobs is to make sure your money lasts as long as you do. And one of the challenges is that we don’t know how long that is. What we do know is that people are living longer. 1 in 3 babies born today are expected to live past their 100th birthday. It appears that soon we’ll no longer have to worry about this planning conundrum. Pensions Minister Steve Webb has announced the Government intention to give pensioners an estimate of their date of death to help them manage their finances. Great. That’s alright then. You’ll be able to work out exactly how much you’ll need and put a plan in place to make sure your money lasts exactly as long as you do. Steve says they’re going to use postcodes, lifestyle choices and hereditary factors to calculate your date of death. That’s something to look forward to then. Nothing worse than not knowing?

With interest rates at record lows, many pensioners are having to delve into their savings to make ends meet – and that can lead to a very slippery slope. Others make the mistake of hanging on to too much of their money for too long, and risk losing a great big chunk of it to Inheritance Tax or paying for care. Fortunately, there are simple ways to “have your cake and eat it”, so to speak. We’ve helped thousands of clients make sure their money lasts as long as they do, and anything left over ends up with their family and not the Government. The steps you need to take are actually very straight forward. If you’d like a copy of my free no nonsense guide showing you how we do that, just call 0330 100 1744, email Helen@pen-life.co.uk, visit www.straight-talking-iht.co.uk or complete the coupon below

KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP FAMOUS GIVE OR TAKE DAY – 27TH APRIL 2014

The day started early for the KMEG team. Cars were pulling up from 7.30 am and a procession of assorted objects was carried into the Memorial Hall. Big stuff included a three-piece suite, a divan bed, drawers and bookshelves, a garden swing, and better still a garden swing-seat for relaxing in the sun, together with its cushions. For the sportily minded there were several bikes and a pile of spare bike-wheels. Also a pair of skis – now who would want to get rid of those I wonder, with the weather so unpredictable? Upstairs Chris Dowie, the town mayor, was demonstrating the making of cloth shopping bags out of donated materials. Her group, an offshoot of the national Morsbags group, has re-started in May. There will be monthly meetings where bags will be made and jokes and lunch shared. The finished bags are then given away to encourage people to give up using plastic bags, which cause so much damage to the environment. If you would like to join in sometimes then please contact her: chris. dowie@hotmail.co.uk There were squeals of delight from children who found toys, books, puzzles and useful bits of Lego upstairs. One couple who came in for a wander round didn’t realise that it wasn’t a sale. They could hardly believe it when a little trike was found for their tiny son, and they were told they could just take it. Giving freely, and taking gratefully, had almost totally departed from everyday life until events such as these started happening a few years ago. Sharing is coming back too. In Berlin apparently there are several Share Shops where for a small fee you can borrow a chain-saw or a dozen wine-glasses. Talking of chain-saws, two people were having an energetic argument about one: ‘You have it. You’d use it more than I would.’ ‘Oh no, you have it – please!’ In the end someone pointed out that the two of them lived so near each other that they could share it! Problem solved. Next Give or Take Day: 26th October 2014, Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall.

The Ryedale Carers Support team are very friendly and supportive and always on hand in the unlikely event of any problems arising. They pay my travel expenses for the journey from my house to the person that I am visiting. They have volunteer get-togethers where I’ve met other volunteers. We had a lovely Christmas party at the Forest & Vale Hotel in Pickering and a wine and cheese party in the summer.

VolunteeRing with Ryedale CaReRs suppoRt

R

yedale Carers Support is a local voluntary organisation and registered charity that provides practical and emotional help for carers, the people they care for and older people living on their own. Just a small amount of your time each week or fortnight could bring companionship to an older person living alone, or allow a carer to have a much needed break from the pressures and responsibilities of looking after someone full time.

To anyone, retired or not, contemplating voluntary work, I would certainly recommend that they spare an hour or two for this worthy cause. Maybe one day we will be in need of their service!”

If you are interested ring 01751 432288 and ask to speak to Claire Hall or Annette Major or pop in to see them at Ryedale Carers Support, The Old School, Tinley Garth, Kirkbymoorside, York, YO62 6AR. Or for more information please visit the website www.ryedalecarers.org.uk

Robert E Fuller wildlife artist

One of the volunteer’s writes: “I recently read an article in the local newspaper asking if anyone had an hour or two to spare each week or fortnight. People were needed to sit with the person being cared for so that the carer could go out or to sit with an older person who was lonely. I could easily have ignored the article, but an hour or two is very little in a whole week. I phoned the number and Claire, one of the Ryedale Carers Support team visited me, or I could have gone to their offices in Kirkbymoorside. I had to supply two references and do a disclosure with the Disclosure and Barring Service. Sometime later Claire phoned me about a carer who needed help, she arranged to collect me to make the introductory visit. At first a little apprehensive I soon felt at ease and have now been visiting the family for nearly a year. It is satisfying to use a little of my time to be of some service to others. 14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A FUN DAY OUT FOR ALL THE FAMILY!

29 JUNE 2014 - SCAMPSTON PARK, MALTON, YO17 8NG

H

eld each year at Scampston Park, Ryedale, North Yorkshire, the Malton Show now enters its 128th year.

The Malton Agricultural Show is one of North Yorkshire’s premier attractions for the summer, and this year is no exception. There is an excellent display on offer, including; farm produce, livestock, horses, fur & feather, vintage tractors, farmers’ market, trade stands, craft fair, and more. There are numerous events to take part in, including the tug-of-war, a very fun dog show, or the many class events, craft marquee, farmers market and more.

FROM THE PRESIDENT It gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to this year’s Malton Show the 128th. I have been involved with the Malton Show for around 50 years, starting as an assistant steward amongst the sheep and graduating to Executive Committee member and Vice-Chairman. I have been privileged to have been involved with the Yorkshire Show for about the same time. My personal involvement is a continuation of my family’s; my father and my late wife, Honor, were tremendously active in the Society. It is to Honor’s memory that I am dedicating my President’s Year. The Prest family has farmed at Fryton, just outside Malton, since 1926 when my Grandfather Robert Prest took the tenancy of Cherrygarth from the Castle Howard Estate. In turn my father and I, along with brothers Stephen

and John, ran the business and now my son, Stuart, is in charge. The farm has diversified away from dairying into a specialist arable operation and we are now proud to welcome visitors to our farm holiday business. As with our farm the Malton Show has developed but it remains an Agricultural Show. The introduction of the Regional Sheep Breeders’ Competition, run in conjunction with Driffield, Ryedale and Thornton Dale Shows, is testament to the Society’s continuing support for British Agriculture. I have many, many happy memories of Malton Show and hope that your visit will be just as much fun. I look forward to meeting as many of you as possible during the day. David Prest President Malton Agricultural Society

FROM THE CHAIRMAN This year the Committee is delighted to welcome David Prest as our President. David has been involved with the Society for over 50 years and hopes to meet as many visitors as possible during the day. We are also proud to acknowledge the long standing support of Les Rickatson who will receive his long-service award from the Yorkshire Agricultural Society later in the year. Our thanks go to our outgoing Secretary Paula Deverell (Fred). We are delighted that she will continue to play a vital role on the Committee. This year we have with us a good number of trade stands as well as the agricultural, equine and horticultural exhibitors who support the Show year-on-year. Their continued support is much appreciated by the Show Committee and visitors alike. We are also proud to be introducing the Regional Sheep Exhibitors’ Championship, a competition at all of our local shows. We believe this is an important development for the regions’ shows and demonstrates our ongoing commitment to agriculture. Don’t forget; you can get lots of information, dates and forms all about Malton Show at www.maltonshow.com

Transform your kitchen without having to buy a new one

D

ream Doors in York has been established for 5 years and has completed hundreds of kitchen facelifts during that time. The business has recently been taken over by Robert and James from the previous owner Barry, who retired in March 2014. The business is located at 110 Fishergate in York where we have several kitchen displays and samples of all the doors and worktops along with appliances, sinks and taps. We provide a service across all the York postcodes and beyond and offer home appointments where we can discuss your requirements in the kitchen to be transformed. We can bring all of our door and worktop samples to you so that you can see them in your own kitchen. A brand new kitchen is often too expensive but, thanks to the Dream Doors service there is a real alternative. We have developed a niche service, understanding that many people choose a new kitchen because of minor faults or a dated look.

The base and wall units are invariably as solid as the day they were installed and an effective facelift can deliver outstanding results.

By replacing the doors and drawer fronts we can transform your old kitchen and save you time, money and hassle. There are hundreds of door style and colour combinations to choose from that will appeal to everyone’s taste – from contemporary to classical and town to country. All our doors and drawers are made to measure to fit your existing units and are manufactured in the UK using the best quality materials. All doors and drawers are available with matching end panels, cornice, lighting pelmets and plinth. Dream Doors also offers worktops, a vast range of appliances and sinks to achieve that new look kitchen. All our kitchens are installed by qualified and experienced local tradesmen to the highest standards. So if you are looking to replace your kitchen why not give us a call to arrange an appointment on 01904 622234.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

NEW TAXI SERVICE FOR RYEDALE Based in Acklam, just outside Malton, Kappa’s Cars is more than just a taxi service. With knowledge of the local area, Kappa’s Cars should be the first number to call if you need to travel in comfortable, clean vehicles, including a four-seater car and a nine-seater mini-bus. Kappa’s Cars is owned by Glen Lewins, also known as Kappa (hence Kappa’s Cars), who has lived in the area for over 20 years. Kappa explained: “I offer a prompt, reliable and courteous service, with a friendly face behind the wheel, licensed by Ryedale District Council.” Kappa’s Cars are based near Malton, but with advance booking, both vehicles can be hired at any time of day or night, and are ideal for airport runs, railway station pickups, or staff nights out, offering door-to-door service. Kappa said: “I cover all areas and I am willing to travel across the country for advance bookings. “I also undertake contract work for factory staff, for example, and offer a courier service. And for someone who finds it hard to get about, Kappa’s Cars is ideal for a day trip out to a local attraction, such as Castle Howard, which is hard to get to by public transport. “And as bus services are being cut in our rural district, there’s never been a better time to use Kappa’s cars, as I am very well placed to access all our lovely villages, which can be remote.” Kappa can also be booked for school runs, early morning shift pickups and similar.

ELLA...

GJC

ON WHAT I SHOULD HAVE LEARNT IN SCHOOL As the final days of my 14year stint in the education system loom ever closer, thoughts turn to moving out, going to university and generally being a self-sufficient, wellorganised and responsible adult. Oh, God. I may well have received a good education (that might be a little pre-emptive to say before exam results in August!), but academic education really doesn’t constitute real preparation. Prepared is something that I am not, and I’ve started to wonder if this could have been remedied by altering the secondary school curriculum somewhat: I doubt Pythagoras’s theorem will be of much use to me out there in the “real world” (where, you know, we could just measure the triangle’s third side?) How to calculate taxes, along with budgeting and working out loans and interest rates et cetera would be much more applicable. Most people in the working world don’t communicate information with essays, so a good few lessons on how to deliver decent presentations wouldn’t go amiss. (In fact, I know some teachers that could benefit from such lessons) The type of D&T that I’ll be doing from now on is not going to be making an acrylic pen-holder. Rather, we should have had classes to practise putting together flat-pack furniture, so we can learn to tell the difference between ‘screw G’ and ‘bolt K’ (and probably learn a bit of Swedish at the same time). Certainly how to change a fuse is something that should be covered. Some people learnt cooking in school, but the fancy recipes of celebrity chefs probably won’t be that practical for student life. Knowing how to make something good out of leftovers and cheap food is a priceless skill to leave home with. As well as, you know, not burning down your kitchen. Along with this is what my Mum likes to call “fridge management” – not only do groceries not actually buy themselves, you also have to think about all the meals you intend to make when you go out and get them. From the shop. Yourself. I could also do to know already what all those buttons on the washing machine do, how to use a plunger, and that the “check engine” light in a car doesn’t mean “check that the engine’s still there”. 2014 AT THE INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR BIRDS OF PREY, DUNCOMBE PARK, HELMSLEY

Great things are happening at the International Centre for Birds of Prey at Duncombe Park in Helmsley! Although we only opened for the first time in 2013, we have just had a bumper Easter. The weather certainly helped, but word is out about us now too. We are open 7 days a week and during our 3 daily flying demonstrations. The Centre features the largest collection of birds of prey in the north of England and houses birds from the tiny Burrowing Owls right up to the truly gigantic Steller’s Sea Eagles. Lora, one of our Lanner Falcons performed a 600ft vertical stoop over the audience the other day – spine-tingling stuff. The Griffon Vultures are raising their young chick and the Grey Buzzard Eagles’ eggs have just hatched. New for 2014 are Photography Days. The noted wildlife photographer, Linda Wright is coming to host the days. Participants will get ample opportunity to take both 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

portrait and flying shots of a number of our birds, and Linda will be on hand to provide tips and instruction to both beginners and more experienced photographers. The Raptor Fair is being held within the centre’s grounds on 14 and 15th June 2014. We have a whole host of trade stands coming to exhibit all manner of bird of prey related goods. In addition a number of falconry clubs, both local and national, are also coming to exhibit. Both the Hawk and Owl Trust and Yorkshire Wildlife Trust will be promoting their valuable conservation work. Conceived to appeal to anyone with an interest in these wonderful birds, the Fair will feature flying demonstrations by our own staff and by other falconers. Nigel King is coming from Kent to fly some of his birds, and Simon Jewitt from Yorkshire Gundogs will be giving

There is a programme of seminars and workshops within our Discovery Centre. Amongst others these will feature Battleflatts Vets talking about veterinary care of raptors and Bob Dalton will doubtless be showing us some of his amazing photos of exotic raptors from his extensive travels. Full access to the International Centre for Birds of Prey is included in the ticket price for the Fair. The Fair opens at 9am on 14th June. No need to book, just turn up on the day. There is stacks of free parking, and if you want to make a weekend of things there is even a camping area (please pre-book for this). We can’t allow dogs into the centre, but Duncombe Park is full of great places to go for a dog walk. See you there!

HEALTH

Holiday Hints

By Ken Teppin (M.C.P.H)r

S

ummer is here and many of us are looking forward to our holidays. In today’s hectic world we seem to depend more on having a good break than ever before. I would like to offer some tips to help prepare and cope with potential problems. Firstly, regular readers of these articles will know of my three first aid tips. Arnica for any falls, knocks or any trauma resulting in bruising or bumps. Rescue Remedy for any shock to the system that results in upset or tears. Finally Aloe Vera Gelly for cuts, bites scratches and obviously, sunburn. A common problem when away from home is upset stomachs and digestive problems. The two main reasons for this tend to be food poisoning or over indulgence. Our digestive enzymes are mainly used to our normal diet and so consider other foods as toxic although local people canPage eat them advert_A6_2_Layout 1 22/08/2013 10:13 1

with impunity. The homeopathic remedy Arsenicum 30 will often help. The sufferer will be cold, anxious and even tearful. They will have cramping pains in the stomach and also watery discharge. Also they will have marked weakness and fastidiousness. Over indulgence is something that we all can succumb to on holiday. The remedy suggested is Nux Vom 30. The indications for this are: the patient feels worse for being cold, or exertion. They will be quarrelsome, irritable and hypersensitive. Of course I am not advocating over indulgence and then just take Nux Vom, but we all like to party sometimes. A couple of other first aid remedies are Apis 30 which is helpful for stings and severe reactions to stings and Nat Mur Tissue Salts for prickly heat. Finally I would like to talk about exposure to the

Good hearing delivers easy listening to the news on the radio orr relaxing with our favourite soap. Good hearing plays a crucial role in keeping us aware, not feeling isolated and enjoying chatting on the telephone. Good hearing has but one benefit above all others: enhanced quality of life!

Top Tips from a dental professional

Non- Surgical Facial Rejuvenation Do you ever look in the mirror and wish you had fewer lines and wrinkles. Do you wish your complexion was more luminous and even?

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

Here at Howardian Dental Practice Christine Parker, a qualified dental surgeon, has undergone the necessary training and has several years’ experience, in wrinkle reduction, dermal fillers and chemical peels. These can be used together or as individual treatments to subtly enhance your features. As an introductory treatment the facial peels are a real skin booster encouraging increased cell turnover and act at a deeper level than regular facials. We call these our ‘Red Carpet Ready’ peels as they not only make your skin feel softer, they also allow the skin to develop a real glow which is maximised after 3-4 days. They are perfect to be used a week or so before that special event. A course of 6, over 6 months, gives really lasting results. We also provide treatment for the reduction of active wrinkles such as laughter lines around the eyes and forehead creasing. These can be substantially reduced, and in many cases erased completely, for between 3 and 6 months. We are also trained in the use of dermal fillers, we only use Restylane as it is approved by the FDA (USA drug regulatory authority) it has a proven history of long term safety, it is non-permanent and so avoids many of the problems seen so recently in the press. All our materials are purchased from reputable national suppliers on prescription. If you would like to brighten up your features this Spring book now for a FREE consultation. The Summer Wedding Season The summer wedding season is here and pampering your feet is an important part of preparing for your special day.

which are comfortable yet smart enough to wear with your morning suit.

The bride and groom will be the centre of attention, yet focusing on our feet before the event can help the big day be a comfortable, relaxed one. Brides - your shoes complete your outfit, but don’t cut back on the cost. Paying out a few more pounds for cushioned, properly-fitted shoes means your day isn’t ruined by aching feet. If you are used to wearing a certain heel or flats every day, don’t be tempted to go for sky-scraper heels or no heel at all if you are used to an inch or two of height – stick to what you know, and invest in good quality shoes. Grooms should not be crippled by comfortless shoes either! There are stylish ‘slipper-style’ shoes

Caring for your feet before the big day is something that gets overlooked. Your feet may have altered during the winter – have you developed some hard skin or cracked heels? Feet need to fit in with the change of season and footwear. Stuart Moore is a fully qualified foot health professional who can visit you wherever you are in the Ryedale and Scarborough areas. He offers a surprising array of treatments which can be administered in the comfort of your own home, at excellent rates and a time to suit you. What is... A VirtuAl AssistAnt? By Jan Osborne, My Local PA www.mylocalpa.co.uk A Virtual Assistant is sometimes referred to as a VA, but in a nutshell is actually a freelance administrator who provides business support to busy business owners on a self-employed basis. It is virtual because sometimes, you don’t ever get to meet your business assistant personally as with today’s technical world, your VA could live in any part of the country or even in another part of the world! A VA can do most administrative and secretarial work, organising meetings, events and functions. They can return your calls, keep in touch with your top clients, answer emails, type up reports, print and post them on your behalf, in fact, the only thing they can’t do is make you a coffee! (Unless of course they are physically in your office) Most VAs work from a home based office using their own equipment, professional knowledge and experience. Work assignments can be sent by email, phone, Skype, fax, online calendars or sharing your webmail account. A good investment is a digital recorder where you can record, or dictate, your instructions, reports or notes, download onto your computer and send by email – great! There is a recording facility on most iphone or smart phones. Have a go, practice by making a recording and sending it by email to yourself. Most VAs have their own transcription software in order to be able to download the file and play it through their computer and type up your dictation. Your personal VA can also lend “size” to your business, could impress your (potential) clients and give you back precious time to focus on your own business. There is one simple invoice to pay and no payroll to worry about. Think about how much time you could save yourself! Contact me to see how I can help. 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

arah 1920, Bellfield, Paper Dolls and Jovona London are just some of the labels you will find at Hatch Clothing in Malton. The boutique fashion outlet is helping Malton become a place to shop for something a bit different. Business owner Anneka Rogers is a talented fashion designer, who studied at the York St John’s University before opening Hatch in December 2013. Anneka explained: “I carefully select stock from fashion houses such as Farah 1920, just stocking two or three sizes of a certain design. This means I have a good turnaround of clothing, and the hanging space always looks fresh and tempting.” Anneka includes both men’s and women’s wear along with a selection of accessories. From flowing maxi dresses to upmarket tunics, and from top quality jeans to shirts, each item is tasteful, fashionable yet classic. “Although I am a fashion graduate, home is where the heart is and I found the ideal premises here at 49 Market Place, which used to be the Malton and Pickering Mercury offices,” said Anneka.

DOES CULTURE SHAPE YOU?

Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church From the day we were born we have been pushed, prodded, persuaded and pervaded by the culture we live in. You can’t stop it, but do we recognise it? Culture is how we describe the ideas, customs, and social behaviour of a particular people or society. Each one of us owes much of who we are today, to the culture or cultures we have experienced. Our accent, behaviour and core values are heavily influenced by those around us whether we like it or not. When we moved to North Yorkshire we were shocked by the culture of leaving houses and cars unlocked. We had never had a handle on the outside of our front door before and the invitation to just walk in was completely alien to us. We were used to keeping everything locked, although we have become more relaxed now as we have become accustomed to the local culture. David Cameron has been recently criticised for saying that Britain is a Christian nation but is there any evidence for this? Has Christianity influenced our culture and therefore shaped how we think and behave? I think it has and still does. Our annual calendar is punctuated by Christian celebrations like Christmas and Easter. Our legal system and core morality still reflects the foundational 10 Commandments. Much of our social welfare system has its origins in the Christian core value to protect the vulnerable; and many men and women, who have found their inspiration in Christianity, have given their lives to make a difference: William Wilberforce, William Booth, Florence Nightingale, C. S. Lewis, Isaac Newton.

What is interesting is that in the 2011 census 59.3 % of the population identified themselves as Christian; in North Yorkshire it was 69.4% and in Ryedale it was higher still at 71.8%. Although I love diversity, experiencing new cultures and value the beliefs of others, it seems that Christianity is still a major belief, inspiration and influence on our culture today. I’m not sure that describing us as a ‘Christian Nation’ is accurate or helpful when trying to bring a diversity of people together, but not to recognise Christianity’s influence on culture and the hope, love and faith that it brings to millions could also be foolish. The question is how much has the culture of Christianity shaped you?

ON YOUR PLOT Expand Your Horisons

Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space.

Jobs for June

• Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. • Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. • Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. • Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.

very year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? RYEDALE • JUNE 2014 • ISSUE 100 when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy.

on amazing growth spurts and you are suddenly left wondering where you are going to plant out those tomatoes that you’ve been nurturing in the greenhouse, or finding you’ve no room for the cabbages that you’d like to be eating later in the year.

You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost? Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ ingredients. Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Turning the heap occasionally will accelerate the breakdown and covering with an old carpet when it is full will also help. Leave for several months and you should have some great compost!

Time to expand your horizons and make full use of containers and of your borders. Look at the different varieties of lettuce and salad crops many of these, along with cabbages, can add a splash of decorative, coloured foliage to your borders (and be eaten too!!!). Grow bags are wonderful for crops such as tomatoes, cucumbers and peppers.

There are some special offers on www.nwleics.gov. uk, under recycling, for composters. June is also the time of year when it is easy to start to run out of space on your plot. Everything puts

They’ll be happy in a sunny spot on your patio but do remember to water and feed regularly. Larger pots can house courgettes and pumpkins, with the exotic looking flowers adding a bright splash of colour. Even hanging baskets can get in on the grow your own act! WHAT IS NEUTERING?

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

N

eutering is a simple operation that prevents males and females from reproducing by the removal of their reproducing organs; in females it is called spaying and males it is called castrating. Both are routine procedures carried out under general anaesthetic and animals usually recover within 10 days.

FEMALE CATS

While she is in season she will be restless and vocal, and can become aggressive. She may spend long periods, even days, away from home in the search for a mate. Aside from preventing unwanted kittens, neutering your female cat at an early age reduces the risks of her developing MAMMARY CANCER in the future.

MALE CATS

Once mature the adult male will also begin to spend long periods away from home. The ‘calling’ female will have attracted many other potential mates and fighting will inevitably follow, leading to painful physical injuries and abscesses which in turn puts them at risk of contracting serious diseases such as FELINE LEUKAEMIA VIRUS and FELINE AIDS (FIV). NEUTERING WILL REDUCE THESE RISKS

MALE DOGS

Neutering will help prevent a number of undesirable behavioural traits. Some behavioural problems are more common in the entire male, and these often lead to territorial and dominance issues. Neutering your dog is also a preventative measure for a number of medical disorders such as TESTICULAR TUMOURS, PROSTATIC DISEASE, HERNIAS and RETAINED TESTICLES.

FEMALE DOGS

Neutering will prevent seasons, false pregnancies, unwanted puppies and all the disruption that goes with these. False pregnancies are a natural phenomenon when your bitch will show signs of pregnancy, nursing and lactation and yet has no puppies.

60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Neutering also helps prevent and reduce the risk of a number of medical problems. As your bitch ages, many uterine abnormalities can develop. Older bitches are prone to PYOMETRA, an accumulation of pus in the uterus, which often needs emergency veterinary surgery. This normally occurs 4-6 weeks after being in season and can be fatal. Early neutering reduces the risk of MAMMARY TUMOURS. Many bitches left entire will develop mammary tumours by the time they are eight.

MALE RABBITS

Male rabbits are usually bolder than females. They are responsive and enjoyable pets, but most are territorial and frequently spray urine, and aggression is a common problem. Neutered males are much happier and more relaxed. They can enjoy life without constantly looking for a mate and are much less aggressive. If carefully introduced, they can live with a spayed female or even another neutered male. Neutered males will stop spraying urine even if the operation is performed later in life.

FEMALE RABBITS

Having female rabbits spayed is equally important. Most female Rabbits become territorial and aggressive from sexual maturity (4-6months). They often have repeated false pregnancies, and may growl at, bite and scratch their owners as well as other rabbits. Keeping two females together (even if they are sisters) tends to make things worse. Spaying reduces (sometimes eliminates) all these behavioural problems. Spayed females are likely to live longer lives than their unspayed sisters.

RYEDALE DOG RESCUE Summer is here but the pounds are still full of unwanted and abandoned dogs facing an uncertain future… So Ryedale Dog Rescue will be out and about making the most of the sunshine to raise funds so that we can save as many lives as possible this summer. Please come and visit us at our events – We are always pleased to chat about what we do and all of our lovely dogs that we have for adoption like the gorgeous two below:

DOGS OF THE MONTH - HALO & WENIE Halo and Weenie are very sweet natured rough coated lurchers who are approximately 18 months old. They have obviously lived together previously as are the best of friends, eating out of the same bowl and chewing on the same bone even when others are available. Their cheeky characters are starting to show as they are becoming much more playful. Ideally because of the strong bond they have with each other we would be looking to home these boys together.

For more information on the rescue, the dogs we currently have for adoption and how you can help please visit www.ryedaledogrescue.com or join Ryedale Dog Rescue on Facebook. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 61

CAN YOU IDENTIFY THIS SOLDIER? mandolin out of the case, we found a photograph of a young soldier, typical of photos taken at the time of the First World War, holding the instrument.

D

enise Moss and her husband are on a quest to try and identify a WW1 soldier in a photograph. “It must be about 15 years ago my husband and I were in a local antiques warehouse, when we came across a musical instrument case. We opened the case and found a zither mandolin. On taking the zither

It was apparent to us that this instrument meant a great deal to this young man, which in turn led us to ask ourselves “Who was he?” and “What happened to him”? We also felt it quite sad that here was this musical instrument and a photograph of a young man and nothing else.” Denise plans to show the zither mandolin and the photograph at an exhibition at Haxby Memorial Hall on 2nd August. Haxby and Wigginton Local History Group are

holding an exhibition of WW1 photos, artifacts and stories. On the same day Haxby Memorial Hall are going to re-dedicate the Hall and hold a parade through the Village of Haxby with The Royal British Legion. A commemoratative plaque to the men of Haxby and Wigginton who served during WW1 will then be unveiled. “My hope is that someone may be able to shed some light on who this young man was,” says Denise, “though we have named him Bill!” If the face in the photo rings a bell, please contact Denise by email: dkmpendennik@aol. com, phone on York 761825.

CELEBRATING OUR 4TH BIRTHDAY

W

e are celebrating our 4th birthday this month and would like to thank the local community for your generous support, without which we could not continue. The majority of our dogs come as strays from the Ryedale Dog Warden but some are taken directly from members of our community who can no longer look after their pets for a variety of reasons. Sadly whilst we are celebrating, our poor Lycon also has an anniversary this month, he will have been looking for a home for a year now. He is such Lycon a wonderful dog and really deserves to find a home of his own. Lycon is just a big, daft lad, he is full of fun, very bouncy, full of energy and bursting with love. He

SHORT STORY

BERNARD’S UNLIKELY CATCH by Jackie Brewster

Bernard has been fishing on the canal bank since before breakfast. The grey cloud and drizzle have slowly burnt off, and the sun is now peeping shyly from behind fluffy clouds. Early on, the occasional dog walker strolled past and nodded to him. But if anyone lingered too long, or looked as though they wanted to chat, he would pull his cap down and hunch over his fishing pole. Bernard prefers the peace and quiet. He casts another handful of wriggling maggots into the dull water, but the perch aren’t nibbling today and his keep-net has been empty all morning. In the distance he hears the rattle of a bicycle. He glances along the towpath and sees a young woman peddling towards him. She’s riding an old fashioned butcher’s bike with a basket on the front. In it, a flowery shopping bag bounces up and down, as she awkwardly veers along the bumpy path. “Yes it’s a lovely bike, Marjorie, reconditioned,” she declares loudly. Bernard frowns. There appears to be no sign of Marjorie. He then notices the sunlight glinting off a silver object in her ear. “Daft thing’s talking on the phone and not looking where she’s going,” Bernard thinks. Just as she’s about to pass him, a mallard takes flight, quacking in a flurry of alarm. It skims the top of her head and disappears over the hedgerow. The woman cries out and swerves, the front wheel of her bike leaving the narrow path with a jolt 66 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

and veering towards the canal. With complaining brakes she comes to an abrupt stop. Bernard thinks she’s had a lucky escape, but then in dreadful slow motion, the woman and her bike begin to topple sideways. She puts her foot down to stop herself but beneath it is only water. As she falls the woman lets out a long squeal, then both woman and bike slap straight into the canal. Bernard wipes the drops of cold water from his face and stares dumbstruck at the water. A couple of bubbles break the surface and then the woman bursts up, gasping and flapping her arms about wildly. “You can stand up,” Bernard says gruffly. “It’s not deep.” She struggles to her feet, apparently unhurt, but with grimy rivers flowing down her hair and face. She tries to steady herself and makes a grab for the fishing pole. Bernard carefully moves it out of her reach, as after all these things cost money. Then, feeling more charitable he rises to his feet, and reaches out, offering her his hand. Unsteadily she slips on the slimy canal bottom, flails, then manages to take the outstretched hand. Bernard drags her and the heavy bike out, both scummy with mud and

bedraggled in duck weed. The woman sits down squelching on the grass next to Bernard, then spits in a most unladylike fashion into the water. “Well, that was a surprise.” She gasps. She begins to wring the water out of her hair, then freezes as though stung. “My mobile!” She drags her sodden bag out of the bicycle basket, water pouring from it like a sieve. Bernard doesn’t fancy the mobile’s chances, but says nothing. She opens the bag, thrusts her hand inside and then without warning she screams and throws the bag into the air. Bernard is bewildered. He stares at the woman as she points at the bag, opening and closing her mouth. Gingerly, he picks the bag up and looks inside. There, thrashing and twisting, is a beautiful perch. “Well, that’s one way to catch ‘em.” He chuckles.

PLEASURE RIDE IN BEAUTIFUL BRANSDALE

R

iders across Yorkshire are looking forward to joining Ride Yorkshire’s pleasure ride in Bransdale, in the North York Moors National Park, on June 15th. The event is being organised to raise funds for Ryedale Special Families, based in Malton, and for Ride Yorkshire’s own work with disadvantaged children and adults.

of between 10-15 miles, with maps and directions also provided. The routes are mostly off-road, following bridleways and other public rights-of-way and also tracks which are normally off-limits to the public. Janet Cochrane, Director of Ride Yorkshire, explains: “We approach the landowners to ask if we can use part of their land for the event, and we find that in the vast majority of cases they are more than happy to let us ride along their tracks once a year or so when they know it’s for charitable purposes”.

There are many different types of horse events, and a pleasure ride (or funride) is where horses and riders follow a waymarked course, normally

In this case, the start venue will be Bonfield Ghyll farm, owned by the National Trust and tenanted by David and Trudi Sanderson, who are kindly

Delicious music, laughter, friendship, wine and strawberries on a warm summer’s evening. Doesn’t that sound enticing? Directed by Michael Wiles, and accompanied by York Minster Organ Scholar, Nick Haigh, the Singers will perform both new and well-loved songs to suit every mood. To round the evening off in fine style, the ladies of the church will serve strawberries, homemade shortbread and a glass of wine or soft drink. hosting the event and providing the food. The ride is stewarded to make sure that even people who are less confident about riding in open country feel safe, and where possible there are marshals on the gates too so that there’s no need for riders to dismount to open them. The marshals are provided by Ryedale Special Families and the Helmsley and District Rotary Club, whose members are happy to spend a day in beautiful countryside helping to raise money for a good cause. The funds raised go towards riding activities for children with special needs or vulnerable adults. For example, in the last year Ride Yorkshire has supported groups of homeless people in York and ex-offenders in Harrogate to take part in stable

management and riding lessons, which helps to increase their self-esteem and employability skills, and has provided riding experiences for children and young people from inner-city areas in Hull and Leeds. MOTORING

FIAT 500L Trekking 1.6 Multijet

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk

@carwriteups

FAST FACTS

• Max speed: 109mph • 0-62 mph: 12.0 secs • Combined mpg: 60.1 • Engine: 1598cc 4 cylinder 16 valve diesel • Max. power (bhp): 105 at 3750 rpm • Max. torque (Ib/ft): 236 at 1750 rpm • CO2: 122 g/km • Price: £19,590 on the road

PROS ‘N’ CONS The Fiat 500L Trekking combines a fashionable look with special grip gadgetry called Traction+, which helps the car handle difficult and dicey surfaces. Under conditions of low or zero traction, the system detects slip, making it easy to maintain directional stability and control. The car is slow and cumbersome to begin with, but the technology certainly inspires confidence during bad driving conditions. The fresh model offers the same functional and practical qualities of the standard Fiat 500L, but has a more upright look. This is because the Italian automaker has raised the car’s suspension to enable it to drive over rough ground more effectively. Features on the 500L includes a touchscreen radio with Bluetooth, six airbags, ESC (Electronic Stability Control), cruise control, leather gearknob and steering wheel, dual zone climate control, side mouldings, parking sensors, electric 70 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

windows, automatic lights with rain sensors, front fog lights and rear armrest. The Fiat also has high-tech fabric seat upholstery with eco-leather inserts.

• Grippy √ • Safe √ • Stylish √ • No built in sat-nav √ • Slow X

To be honest, all that the 500LTrekking lacks is a built in sat-nav. Other than that, my flagship test model came loaded with kit including 17” alloy wheels which were fitted with mud and snow tyres. To emphasise its outdoor disposition, the Fiat also has specific front and rear bumpers, a skid-plate and fog lights which help give it a rugged look. If you’re concerned about the wellbeing of you and your passengers then the Fiat will certainly tick your box. It’s one of the safest motors on the road today, as demonstrated by its prestigious Euro NCAP 5-star rating. In fact the 500L Trekking is the first car in the Fiat range to provide City Brake Control as standard. This system is designed to reduce the effects of low-speed collision in traffic. It’s clever stuff.

Overall, the big Fiat is a robust motor and will appeal to style conscious families who need the space for five people combined with functionality and practicality. Just don’t expect awesome acceleration and certainly allow yourself lots of time to overtake. With a 0-62mph pace of 12 seconds, life can get a little frustrating behind the sluggish, albeit inoffensive wheel of the Fiat 500L 1.6 MultiJet 105hp Trekking.

DOUBLE CHOIR TREAT IN MALTON

T

wo prominent male voice choirs from opposite ends of the country join forces in Malton on Friday May 30th for their first ever joint spring concert. Newchurch Male Voice Choir from the Isle of Wight is the guest of the popular Malton District Male Voice Choir at the concert, which is being held in Malton School’s superb new East Wing Hall on Middlecave Road at 7.30pm. The concert is another ‘first’ for the Malton choir and follows a premiere in Scarborough in April when it helped raise a record £2,653 pounds for Marie Curie Cancer Care at a National Association of Choirs concert there. More that two hundred singers from seven Ryedale and East Yorkshire choirs were involved and the 25-strong Malton choir, the youngest among them and founded only in 2007, earned praise for its performance. Of the upcoming joint concert Malton choir Secretary David Ackroyd said: “Hosting such a vibrant and busy choir as Newchurch is a thrilling privilege and it will be a valuable experience, both from a musical and organisational point of view”. Newchurch Male Voice Choir is more than 40 years old and sings regularly with other male voice choirs

Newchurch Male Voice Choir on the UK mainland and at home, where it has won trophies at the Isle of Wight Music Festival. Newchurch and Malton will perform individually at the upcoming concert. However, they also plan to sing four numbers together and these were being organised by the choir MDs – Malton’s Vivien Wilcock and Newchurch’ Roy Bevan - as the HandyMag went to press. Tickets for the May 30th Malton-Newchurch concert cost £7.00 and are available from Hoppers stationers in Malton Market Place on 01653-692014, from choir members or on the door. COOKING BUTTERED BRIOCHE PUDDING Diane Johnson

EQUIPMENT: Well greased, deep baking dish

If you’re looking for a little bit of food indulgence it doesn’t get much better than this pudding. Super easy to prepare, this dish works beautifully well either on its own, or with a dollop of custard or ice-cream. INGREDIENTS: • 1 brioche, sliced and buttered • 60g sultanas • 2 level tablespoons castor sugar • 1 1/4 pint whole milk

METHOD: • Preheat the oven to 180°c or gas mark 3-4. • Slice and butter the brioche. Put a layer on the bottom of the dish and sprinkle the sultanas over them. • Arrange a second layer of brioche over the top. • Place the milk in a pan and gently heat. • Whisk the eggs and sugar together and add the warm milk to make a creamy custard. • Strain the custard over the brioche and sprinkle the nutmeg over. • Stand for 15 minutes before placing in the oven. • Cook for 30-40 minutes until set and lightly golden.

• 4 medium sized eggs • Sprinkling of nutmeg • Serve with cream, custard or ice-cream.

THE SPICE OF LIFE - CARAWAY You could mistake a caraway plant at a quick glance to a carrot—with its finely divided and feathery type leaves and indeed it is part of this family producing seeds which are about 2mm in length.

The roots of the plant, which grows up to 30cm high, can be cooked as a root vegetable in the same way as parsnips or carrots.

These seeds are harvested for essential oils, soaps and perfumes and used to flavor dishes and drinks. Caraway seeds are popular because of their pungent anise flavor and aroma.

OTHER USES: • Assistance with stomach complaints • Added to lotions and soaps • Used in Indian cuisine

74 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

In gardening, the Caraway plant is useful because the strong scent attracts wasps and flies to its flowers thus protecting other crops from these pests.

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett

Wolf Hall Hilary Mantel This is a book that I took some time ‘getting round to’, not being sure that historical fiction was what I felt like reading. However, from the moment I did get round to it, I was hooked. Mantel deserves the praise and awards heaped on this volume and its sequel, Bring Up the Bodies: it is truly a remarkable book. The central character, introduced in Wolf Hall, is Thomas Cromwell – clerk to Cardinal Wolsey at the time of Henry VIII’s attempts to divorce his first wife. The fact that Cromwell stands out against the figures of Wolsey, Thomas More and Henry himself is testament to Mantel’s storytelling power. He is a compelling character – complex, brutal at times and yet always sympathetic: a far cry from other fictionalised accounts, and yet somehow definitive. The novel traces the rise of Cromwell, as first Wolsey and then More fall, seeing him become Henry’s chief adviser at the same time as the Boleyn family come to dominate the court. Anne and her sister Mary are probably the central female characters, each deeply involved in the life of the king and both fascinating in their own right. The historical and political intrigues surrounding these events are well known to many, and Mantel uses them to structure the novel as she concentrates on her characters and the ways in which their lives are affected. Cromwell’s own family tragedies and triumphs are offset against events at court, developing the human side which makes this depiction so different. 80 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

This isn’t an easy book, and at over 600 pages it is a substantial read. But the minute I put it down, I picked up the sequel – and that fact speaks volumes.

There’s A Dinosaur in My Bathtub Catalina Echeverri Pierre is a dinosaur. He comes from France (you can tell by his name, and the moustache is a bit of a giveaway, too). And he lives in Amelia’s house – sometimes in the bathtub, but he can hide behind the shower curtains too. You see, no-one else knows he is there. Amelia and Pierre have wonderful adventures together – often involving marshmallows, ice cream and, of course, stinky cheese (remember, Pierre is French!). Each adventure is beautifully illustrated, with lots of little details and a smattering of French phrases just for fun. Sadly, by the end, Pierre has to go away when the autumn leaves start to fall – but surely, he will be back? This is a charming picture book which does what all the best picture books do, telling one story with words and another with images. Destined to become a bedtime favourite – oui?
