elcome to the June edition. June has to be my favourite time of the year. Gardens are lush green and the weather is finally (hopefully!) warming up. This year June has the added bonus of an extra day off, with large numbers of celebrations for the Queen’s Jubilee to get involved in. I hope you manage to get along to your local party. I wouldn’t really call myself a royalist, but even I can see that 60 years on the throne is something to be celebrated. I shall be dragging my troop along to our village celebrations come rain or shine! June also brings strawberries and cream and, best of all, tennis. I don’t play much sport – when I say not much – I mean none whatsoever! But Wimbledon fortnight always brings on a sense of nostalgia of games past and a need to find a tennis court. In my head I still play like I did in my 20s – serving overhead, winning rallies with a cross-court top spin forehand and chasing down every shot. In reality, I’m exhausted after a few shots, bored of chasing our 2 tennis balls into the surrounding countryside and in serving

Thank goodness there’s tennis to watch on the TV instead! We haven’t run a travel feature before but we now have a new columnist - Heidi Perfect has the answers to all of your travel questions (see page 17). If you have any comments on the magazine and its content, please feel free to let me know. I am always keen to make improvements. The competition winner in the April edition was Jack David from Malton. Well done! I have had a request for the answers to be published for anyone that couldn’t find all the Easter bunnies! Following the success of Richard’s Guitar Whisperer tour, which came to Pickering in 2010, his new concert performance, is entitled ‘The Number 26 Bus to Paraguay’. “It is based upon his latest album and charts the inspiring tale of how as a young boy, he took the number 26 bus to his first guitar lesson, and ended up in touring Paraguay in 2011 as a famous guitarist and honoured guest” explained Ben. The show celebrates the life and music of the eminent Paraguayan guitarist and composer, Augustin Barrios, as well as others including Django Reinhardt, Claude Debussy and Los Paraguayos. With his warm and easy rapport with audiences, Richard shares tales and music from his own musical journey and the inspiration he found in Barrios, an abiding musical presence that led him to perform at the country’s bicentenary celebrations in spring 2011. The show features animation and film projected behind Richard as he plays, in a musical event that demonstrates just how far one man can expand the expressive range of the guitar - light years from what you might expect a classical guitar recital to be. This is sure to be another outstanding performance from one of the U.K’s leading instrumentalists. Come along for a wonderful summer evening of world class music.

providing quality upvc products The company Window Distribution Ltd was founded in 1991 to service the PVCu Window, Door and Conservatory needs of local Builders, Joiners, PVC fitters and Builders Merchants on a supply only basis. They were one of the first trade fabricators to seek to offer a quick turn around on orders and have developed a strong, successful association to supply many businesses within the sector, including some well known national building trade suppliers and local housing authorities. They are also on the approved supplier list for York and Ryedale housing. Still a privately owned company, they have proved sustainability in the market and after 20 years of trading, still trade under the same name. Unlike other companies who specialise in glass or frames, Window Distribution not only supply the frames, but also own the glass factory which means they are not relying on other companies for quality. Over this time, they have steadily grown and built up an enviable reputation for exceptional customer service and high quality products, manufacturing over half a million double glazed units and over 125,000 windows (which equates to 12,500 average 3 bedroom houses). They have a stable customer base and have indeed retained many customers from the first year of trading, underlining how seriously they take customer’s needs. Customer satisfaction is achieved by meeting the requirements of BS EN 1279 and the British Standards Institution Kitemark scheme.

QualiTy producTs Window Distribution encourage the end user to come and view the products: to see where they are made and the quality they are receiving. This inevitably promotes confidence and helps trades when selling their service. Products continue to be updated and they now offer intelligent self clean glass which also retains and refracts heat to keep up with energy efficient standards. 8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

New Products ■ Bi-folding doors ■ Secondary glazing ■ Triple-glazing energy efficiency

To help save energy and, more importantly, power usage, Window Distribution are now an approved member of the Pilkington energiKare scheme (www. pilkington.co.uk/energikare). highest standards in glass making. This benefits the end user through reduced costs on fuel bills, keeping environmentally friendly and staying energy efficient. In this way, Window Distribution are able to work out details of yearly savings on heating costs which tradesmen can pass on to the end user, as home-owners will inevitably use the rating as part of their purchase decision.

QualiTy Team

The success of the company has been greatly assisted by the efforts of its staff and their dedicated contributions to the overall team effort. The majority of the shop floor team have been with the company 8 years or more. All of the admin team are involved in the quality process and are all BSI qualified and trained in quality management systems. As a small company with 20 full time employees, plus a key office team (who all have 18 years plus service) Window Distribution Ltd can offer a higher quality service as requests can be dealt with by staff who know and understand the business. They can offer a personal service and build up strong continuous customer relationships.

afTer sales service

Window Distribution offer a 10 year product guarantee and have now been established twice as long as that guarantee giving you confidence that they will be there to deal with any issues. They have complete technical knowledge of the products on offer, enabling immediate support to trades when you need it. As Window Distribution are fabricators, their products can still be updated 15-20 years on as well as additional parts supplied. Buying local means you get a personal service and you are able to come back if you should experience any problems, which is not always the case when buying from some of the bigger companies. Future plans for the company are to build a new showroom. With so many products on offer, Window Distribution Limited want to be able to display as many as possible, so traders benefit from being able to show the end user - i.e bi-fold doors, composite doors and indeed quality.

hen was the last time you had the TV remote control all to yourself? In my house it’s a privilege I rarely enjoy, but when I do, I feel the power and the weight of responsibility! Choosing something we all want to watch is virtually impossible, but as a family we do enjoy the odd talent show. Recently, I went to see the ‘Hunger Games’ at the cinema. I was intrigued, the trilogy of books by Suzanne Collins had gripped my daughter, and it seemed everyone was talking about it. Yet, I couldn’t understand it, not because I was too old or out of touch, but because I couldn’t understand how this plot could be so gripping, let alone be made into a film. The Hunger Games are an annual event, sadly resembling a talent show, but set in the future. One boy and one girl aged 12 to 18 from each of the 12 districts surrounding the Capitol are selected by lottery to compete in a televised battle where they have to hunt to kill each other until only one person is left. Trust me; it is as gruesome as it sounds, but has only been rated a ‘12A’. Yet I too was gripped, thoroughly entertained but mostly, challenged. How could a society get to the place where they would allow such a ‘game’ to be televised? Why hadn’t it been stopped? Who was going to stand up, buck the trend and say ‘no’? The central character, Katniss Everdeen, was fearful that for the first time her sister could be chosen, and was desperate to find a way to stop the games but couldn’t; instead made a chilling observation. While there are people that will watch, the games will continue! Have you ever found yourself complaining about the rubbish on the television, yet we still watch? If there wasn’t an audience, perhaps the programmes wouldn’t be made. It reminds me of the chicken and the egg, which comes first? How do we make change? Who should take a stand; the viewer or the programme maker? Perhaps we are all responsible? It takes courage to buck a trend, to go against the crowd, but when you believe there is a better way, someone has to be the first to stand up and say ‘no’. I think I’ll pay a bit more attention when I next have the responsibility of the TV remote control! Heidi Perfect

Are you protected!

Hi peeps, I would like to start by introducing myself. My name is Heidi, Heidi Perfect, and I am your eyes and ears for all things travel. I am not sure if you are aware but the Rules with regards to ATOL have been changed by the Civil Aviation Authority to make sure that your holiday is fully financially protected until you return home But what does this really mean to you? In the past, when you booked that trip of a lifetime, it was ‘presumed’ in many cases that financial protection was in place. Unfortunately that has not always been the case. When suppliers failed, you could have been left without holidays, half way through your holiday, with no support in resort and being sent home, or worse still, no obvious means to get home other than by paying again and fighting for a refund when you get home! These fantastic new rules will mean that your holiday will be protected, a certificate issued and financial re-imbursement made more simply should the above happen. So how do you ensure your holiday is protected? If you are planning to buy a holiday which includes a minimum of flights and hotel or flights and car hire, you should be booking with a reputable travel agent who will sell these to you using their own ATOL license or that of a tour operator. The only stipulation is that the flight , hotel and / or car hire etc. is booked within 24 hours of each other. Bookings made separately will not be protected outside of this rule. We are proud to work with one of the leading UK Travel consortia who have worked closely with the Civil Aviation Authority to ensure that we are fully compliant. In addition, we operate under a trust account which ensures that your holiday is safe in financial terms protecting you from tour operator failure. So peeps, there we are , an insight to financially protecting your holiday. I’ll be back soon with more travel snippets.

Nissan Juke R

at Goodwood

I

f I had a nice long drive in front of my house, like Lord March, I wouldn’t get much work done. The temptation to hoon up and down in anything with an engine would just be too great to resist. Unfortunately, I don’t have that problem, so an invite to apply some rubber to the Goodwood estate’s hill climb is always welcome. My invite came for the media day for Goodwood’s 2012 motoring events – the Festival of Speed and the Revival. The day is a chance for Lord March to ramp up the excitement surrounding the two events and a good opportunity for the media to get behind the wheel of some new metal from supporting manufacturers. Fortunately I was looking forward to one helluva ride. Nissan had offered a last minute spin up the hill in one of only two Juke Rs in the world. For those of you that aren’t in the know, this is basically the love child of a Juke/GT-R one night stand. Under the matt black Juke bodywork is the running gear and engine from the GT-R. The 3.8-litre, 485bhp twin turbo charged engine has been squeezed in, the four-wheel drive carried across and it has the performance to match. Foot to the floor and 60mph arrives in around 3 seconds. The mad project was conceived as a marketing exercise by Nissan GB’s former MD Paul Willcox who, when he took up his new post in Europe, gave it the green light. Costing £250,000 each, the pair were designed and built in the UK by RML – one left-hand and one right-hand drive. The latter is for exclusive use in the UK. So what’s it like to drive? First impressions were staggering. The Juke R handles all that power remarkably well, transferring it into forward thrust with no drama, much like the bigger GT-R does. There was just enough time to savour the whoosh of the turbos on the start straight as the hay bales and trees quickly melted into a summery soup of colour. The first corner is a tight right hander and an overzealous prod on the cold brakes soon made me realise I could have carried 20mph more through the bend. In front of the house, I managed five secondsish of full throttle madness and the Juke R’s turn of pace staggered – 120mph was indicated on the digital readout (my passenger reliably informed me). Flint wall safely passed without grazes, the final section of the run allowed a little more confidence. 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

www.crystalcleanvaleting.co.uk It was soon clear that although hand-built, the Juke R is a very competent and polished piece of kit. It reminds me of a Renault 5 GT Turbo – but turned all the way up to 11. It’s just a shame these two marketing models are all we’re ever likely to see. There’s very little chance we’ll ever get a production run model. The cost and build time would make it very difficult to justify – especially when a GT-R can be had for circa £70k. Still, as drives up garden paths go, this Nissanpowered excursion will be remembered as a very special one. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk) Copy deadline for the next edition is Friday 1st June

MOTORING

BMC MOTOR ENGINEERS Servicing & Repair of Cars, Vans & 4x4s

R

egular maintenance and servicing helps to keep your car in tip top condition and helps spot potential problems before they stop you in your tracks.

BMC Motor Engineers is based at Norton Grove Industrial Estate, Westfield Way and owned by husband and wife team, Barry and Kerry McWilliams. They pride themselves on a friendly, efficient and reliable service for their customers. And after 18 months of trading they are delighted to never have received a single customer complaint. In terms of customer service, the main area in which BMC specialises is in overcoming all those niggles that add up to a bad experience with a car mechanic. First of all, there’s no inconvenience of being without your car for a day – BMC’s courtesy car is at your disposal as long as your own car is in the shop. Secondly, you won’t leave BMC with the feeling you were overcharged or baffled with technical talk. Barry makes a point of ensuring customers understand exactly what the problem is with their car, and what repairs are needed. He’ll even take you into the workshop and demonstrate the issue, with the car elevated on the ramp if necessary. Finally, you’ll receive a warm welcome, a cup of tea, and even if you’ve just nipped in with a quick query, free advice on all things motoring. Kerry, who takes care of the office, administration and accounts for the business, says women especially are reassured by BMC’s helpful attitude and the fact that there is a woman there to greet them. Barry is a highly qualified mechanic who trained locally and previously worked at the local Volvo dealer where he became an expert in Volvo servicing. He can service and repair all makes of vehicle, and specialises in keeping 4x4s in good condition. Electrical problems – most mechanics’ worst nightmare – is another of Barry’s specialities, who relishes a challenge and genuinely loves tinkering. In readiness for the summer, BMC is offering spring checks ready for all of your holiday driving. An air conditioning service will ensure your car is comfortable all summer long. BMC can also carry out pre-MOT checks and arrange MOT testing for all customers. Kerry and Barry, who have been married for ten years, went into business together a year ago to fulfil a long-held dream to work together – and it’s been a great success.

lawn is an essential part of most gardens, but how can you make sure yours looks good? Feeding a lawn is essential to ensure it looks lush and green. A poorly maintained and inadequately fed lawn is far more likely to be invaded by moss, weeds and is prone to disease. Choose a lawn fertilizer formulated for the specific needs of the grass at this time of year; nitrogen is constantly being removed by mowing so it needs to be replaced. Phosphorus, potassium and iron also help to promote and maintain top quality growth. The precise amount of fertilizer that your lawn requires is determined by soil type, frequency of irrigation or rainfall, frequency of mowing and whether clippings are left on the lawn. If you’re happy using chemicals on a weed problem, it’s easiest to use a product containing both weed killers and a fertilizer. If you have time, there is a marginally better effect if you feed the lawn with the spring feed then wait two weeks before applying the weed killer. Or remove small infestations of weeds by hand. A proprietary moss killer should take care of moss, but follow the instructions carefully to ensure that they have been thoroughly killed before you attempt to rake them out. If living moss is raked out the problem becomes worse. Once you have raked the dead moss out, the overall effect of all the bare patches may make you despair, but if you keep the lawn well fed (and over-seed if necessary) it will soon green up. Regular mowing is essential. If cut frequently, so that only small amounts of grass are removed at any one time, it should grow dense and green - try to remove up to 30% of the grass growth at a single mowing. If the grass is to be well walked on or used as a playing surface then the cut should be kept to ¾-1 inch. If you want a show lawn that isn’t subjected to pounding feet, then keep the grass to ¼ inch but remember that during summer you will need to use the mower several times a week! What about mowers? The one you choose will probably be determined by cost as well as the job it can do. If you have a level, fairly high-quality lawn then a cylinder mower is best. If the surface of your lawn is the slightest bit uneven, then a rotary mower is a better choice as it will cope much better in ‘adverse’ situations. If you remove a fair amount of grass at each cut then the clippings should be raked up immediately. However, if you produce only tiny clippings then during dry weather you can leave them on the lawn to help conserve soil moisture. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 23

Emily’s Column Hello again, All those who know me will probably be aware of my (bordering insane) passion for reading. In my opinion there is no better way to spend a weekend than to curl up with a good book, lying in front of a roaring fire and holding a good latte! Mmm… To me, reading isn’t a chore when your parents have dragged you off facebook. Nor is it a vain attempt to get educated. As geeky as this sounds (and I’m sure it will), I love reading for the same reason other teenage girls love watching a good film; to lose yourself in someone else’s fantasies, to hold your breath at the next cliff-hanger in anticipation of the protagonist’s catastrophes. In reading a book you don’t have to limit yourself to someone else’s acting abilities and interpretation of the story, you can use your own imagination. And you can read your favourite lines over and over and over again. Despite my love of a good paperback, I do also enjoy snuggling up to watch a film now and then. Recently, however, I’ve found myself getting more and more annoyed with films which ruin someone’s appreciation for a good story. A good example of this is the Twilight series. Stephenie Meyer created entertaining, emotional characters which can now be seen on almost every young teenage girl’s wall as ‘TEAM JACOB!’ posters. It seems that anybody who doesn’t fit the ‘giggling and squealing’ criteria, is thought to automatically cringe at the word Cullen and stick their nose up at the word vampire. I’m not in any way saying that I enjoy “’I want to drink your blood’ ‘YAY!’” books, but for me, supernatural novels simply add danger and difficulty to already exceptional storylines, and passion to the romantic tales that any girl could enjoy. I told you it would sound geeky…

F

amilies in Sheriff Hutton and surrounding villages are about to have a brand new, purpose-built children’s nursery, providing welcome flexibility for busy parents in both holidays and term-time. Like many working mothers living in the area, when Sarah Kelly returned to work a year after her son was born, closer childcare would have made a huge difference to her long working day. Based on that experience, she has founded a new nursery on Sheriff Hutton business park – and as a primary Sarah Kelly, Owner of school teacher with a Puddleducks Day Nursery passion for childcare, she’s the ideal person to do so. At the heart of everything the nursery will do is Puddleducks’ ethos, which values working in partnership with parents to nurture children, and to help give them the strong grounding of confidence, curiosity and love of learning that will stand them in good stead for the future. The nursery building work is nearing completion, having received planning permission with unanimous support from Ryedale’s councillors, at Christmas. Sarah said: “We did a lot of market research beforehand, and the response we received from the business park, Sheriff Hutton village and the surrounding areas, confirmed that it will be a vital provision in the community.” The purpose-built nursery will have three rooms catering for different ages – babies in the ‘nest’, toddlers in the ‘ducklings’ room and pre-school youngsters in the ‘ducks’ room – all with their own outdoor play and learning environments. Freshly prepared food will be provided on site in the nursery’s own kitchen. Full details about the nursery, including drawings of the layout and images from the building process, are available at www.sheriffhuttonnursery.co.uk. You’re welcome to come along to our fun filled, family open day on 7th July from 1pm to view our impressive new premises, and meet the staff. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 31

he European Court of Justice (ECJ) have made it official – there is no difference between men and women. At least when it comes to insurance there isn’t. From December 2012, it will be illegal for Insurers to differentiate between men and women when it comes to pricing their policies. So who cares? Well you should - it’s going to affect a lot of you. When men came to take income from their pension, they used to get better rates than women. But that was only because they were expected to die sooner than women. On the other hand, life insurance premiums for women would generally be lower – again because women were expected to live longer and therefore less likely to die before the end of the plan. The plain truth is that women live longer than men. But the European Court is so powerful, it has decreed that life expectancy of both men and women will henceforth be exactly the same. Well that’s not exactly true. But Insurers will not be allowed to differentiate between men and women - even though they pose completely different risks. So guess what? This makes absolutely no sense. But we’ll have no option but to accept it and cough up. Because the effect of this nonsense is that it’s likely that men’s pension income rates will fall and women’s insurance premiums will rise. MeMo to WoMen - if you’re thinking about taking out insurance, now might be a good time to do it. (If you don’t think you need life assurance – it could actually be the most important thing you do for your family.) Act now and talk to us. MeMo to Men – if you are thinking about retirement in the next couple of years, now would be a good time to talk to an expert like ourselves about what your options are before these changes take place, and see whether there are alternative options for you to avoid being turned into a woman! Sticky Lamb Chops 1. In a saucepan on low heat, mix

Ingredients 8 Lamb Chops 6 Large Potatoes 2 tbsp Redcurrant Jelly 4 tbsp Red Wine Vinegar 2 Sprigs of Rosemary 2 Cloves of Garlic 2 Handfuls of Fresh Redcurrants

together the redcurrant jelly and red wine vinegar. Chop up the garlic and rosemary and add them to the sauce. Mix and leave on the heat until there are no chunks of the jelly left (this should take about 5 minutes). When finished put the lamb chops into a shallow dish and pour the sauce on top. Cover with cling film and leave aside for an hour.

2. Half an hour before you

are ready to serve, peel the potatoes and slice them up into pieces around 1cm thick. Put them in a saucepan of boiling water and cook for 10-15 minutes or until soft. When they are finished, strain the potatoes and fry in oil for 5-10 minutes on either side, ensur-

by Jared Smith age 12 ing that they are brown and crispy. You can now either put them on a plate under tinfoil or put them in a warm oven until they are needed to be served.

3. Remove the lamb chops from

the marinade/sauce and put on a plate to dry a little before you cook them on the griddle. Heat up the griddle with olive oil until hot and sear the lamb chops on either side to your liking. Meanwhile pour the sauce back into the saucepan, add a couple of handfuls of redcurrants, and heat it up to be served.

4. Once everything is cooked and

prepared; remove the potatoes from the oven and serve with the sticky lamb chops, redcurrant sauce and green vegetables.

30 Cyclists Needed

Up for a challenge

F

this summer?

ollowing last year’s event which raised nearly £10,000 for Ryedale Special Families, the Yorkshire Wold’s Cycle Challenge needs just 30 more entries to double the entry size from last year.

CYCLE 146 MILES IN 2 DAYS...

For those new to this event, the challenge is to cycle 146 miles in 2 days on the new fully signed “Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Route”, a circular tour starting and finishing at Norton College, Norton, near Malton, North Yorkshire. Leaving your car at Norton College on Saturday morning you will set off along the first day’s 73 mile section. At the end of day 1, enjoy an overnight camp at Hutton Cranswick Sports & Recreation Centre, complete with barbecue, licensed bar and live entertainment! (Don’t worry - your tents are transported to Hutton Cranswick for you!) After a hearty breakfast on Sunday morning, set off on the second 73 mile leg returning back to Norton College in the afternoon to collect your Completion Certificate and Goody-Bag and also where showers and refreshments will be available. The Challenge is suitable for experienced cyclists as well as adventurous families, couples, individuals, or groups, but please note that this is not a race and all cyclists must follow the Highway Code! Obviously an important part of your challenge is to raise as much sponsorship as possible for Ryedale Special Families! There is lots more information at www.yorkshirewoldscyclechallenge.org.uk or phone 01904 720003 or 01653 690503.

Diseases in Rabbits Nicola Vincent BVSc MRCVS Station House Vets

T

his month the focus of this article is on infectious diseases in rabbits and their prevention.

Rabbits are becoming increasingly popular pets in the UK and are often kept as much more than your typical child’s pet these days. With this rise in popularity, much more is also now known about the types of medical problems they can encounter and new treatments and procedures are also being developed too. One such new development is a combined vaccine that is now available against both myxomatosis and rabbit haemorrhagic disease because, whilst there are now more treatments than ever available for bunnies, these two diseases are still usually fatal. Myxomatosis is caused by a poxvirus and is spread by rabbit fleas and also direct contact between rabbits, wild rabbits often act as a reservoir for the infection. When a rabbit becomes infected with the disease, the clinical signs usually seen include lethargy, a high temperature, not eating and conjunctivitis affecting both eyes. This often leads to swelling of the membranes around the nose, eyes, mouth, ears, genitalia and anus and can then also progress to a thick, pus-like discharge from the nose. The majority of affected rabbits die within 2 weeks and, though supportive treatment can be given, euthanasia is usually recommended to prevent suffering. Rabbit haemorrhagic disease, previously known as viral haemorrhagic disease, is another viral disease, this one caused by a calicivirus. It is a highly contagious disease that is caught either by direct contact with another infected rabbit or can be carried on our hands, clothing etc (although the virus itself is not harmful to humans). This disease is a common cause of sudden death in rabbits which can be accompanied by bleeding from the nose and mouth and there are often no warning signs that anything may be wrong. If a rabbit is over 2 months of age when it becomes affected, then there is nearly a 100% chance that it will die of the disease and there is no treatment available. Originally this disease was more commonly seen in the south of the UK in the 1990’s but it is now more widespread and can occur anywhere. The new vaccine has only recently been released

50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

for use but is the first time that it has been possible to vaccinate for both diseases at the same time, as with the previous vaccines that were available 2 separate injections had to be given 2 weeks apart. The vaccine can be given from 5 weeks of age and provides immunity for 12 months for both diseases, whereas previous vaccines have only given immunity for myxomatosis for between 6 and 12 months. The vaccine is available now and an appointment can be made by ringing reception at the practice, the cost is £30 +VAT and this also includes a full health check and the chance to discuss any concerns or queries you may have with the vet.

Making a difference

– Hattie’s unforgettable adventure

T

he Handy Mag was one of many local businesses who sponsored Hattie Cotton, 19, to work with disadvantaged children in South Africa as part of her gap year. She’s shared some of her experiences with us: In February this year, I ventured out to South Africa to do some voluntary work in Cape Town. I volunteered to teach young children with Global Vision International, a charity which has set up free nurseries in South Africa. My most unforgettable time was in Fish Hoek Bay, and I did not take a moment for granted, as each day was an amazing experience. I spent the first two weeks of my trip helping out at a small nursery called the Rainbows Centre, and a foster home called Rachel’s Safe House. These were both in the Township of Masiphumelele. The Rainbows Centre was amazing; the children were adorable and Cornelia, the woman who ran the nursery inside her own home, was so admirable. The children have an amazing sense of rhythm; they were constantly singing and clapping,

52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

and I loved seeing them all so happy! At first I knew it would be hard to teach due to the language barrier, but I quickly bonded with the children and learned how to interact in many ways other than speech. At Rachel’s Safe House the children were slightly older, but they were so keen to learn. The day I taught Mziyanda to do percentages was a proud moment in my life! Helping these children made me feel needed and all these months of preparation paid off. I spent the second two weeks of my trip at a nursery called The Hope Centre, which was purely

GVI-funded. My time there made me feel so needed, and I really came to realise the importance of my trip. My whole time in South Africa persuaded me to experience as much as I can in life and enjoy everything I do. Maybe I learned this thanks to the amazing people and inspiring staff I spent time with, the eager children I’ve helped, or just Fish Hoek in general. Whatever the reason, I never ever want to forget!

A big thank you to the following businesses for sponsoring my trip: Plum The Palace Cinema Dapper Dogs Robinsons Opticians Ltd Royal Dry Cleaners Hair Box Leavening Church Council Leavening Yorkshire Country Women’s Association The Smile Rooms Dental Practice McBeath and Wiles Ltd Scoops Mennells Confectioners Beechams Pharmacy The Handy Mag

Autumn date for 'The King of Rock and Roll' at the Milton Rooms!

R

yedale Special Families has announced the follow up to their Fab Beatles fundraising concert with the spectacular “Vision of Elvis” show, performed by one of Europe’s top Elvis tribute artists, Rob Kingsley. The show will take place once again at Malton’s Milton Rooms, on Saturday 6th October when it is hoped there will be another capacity audience! Rob Kingsley is recognised as the “Official European Champion” having recently won Europe’s largest Elvis tribute artist competition, one that many top Elvis tribute artists compete in from all around the world. He also has the distinction of being the first Elvis tribute artist to perform live at the new Wembley Stadium, as well as performances at London’s Hyde Park and many prestigious theatres and venues in the UK and around the world! Rob heard his first Elvis song ‘Heartbreak Hotel’ as a young boy and as he grew up his passion and admiration for Elvis became a huge part of his life. ‘Elvis Presley will always be the greatest performer and entertainer that ever lived. I am very honoured and humbled to be a part of keeping his memory alive as I am a true Elvis fan and my shows are dedicated to paying a sincere and respectful tribute to him. I’m delighted to have been asked to perform this special fundraising concert for such an amazing charity!’ Rob’s show is the only tribute act to be endorsed by Mr Ed Bonja, Elvis Presley’s official photographer and road manager, who worked closely with Elvis on more than one thousand concerts from 1970-1977. It features his very own support band “The Cadillacs” plus backing singer, “The Sweet Sensation”. Together they bring you a full evening of all the classic hits, including themes from “Sun Studios”, “The Movie Years” and the “68 Comeback Special” as well as the sensational “Concert Years” finale.

Could you spare £3 a month to help save the lives of local dogs in need? In these difficult times, lots of small rescue charities and animal shelters are being forced into closing down by lack of funds and support. Please help us to make sure that Ryedale Dog rescue is not one of them by making a small, regular donation towards our ever increasing running costs. Every penny we receive goes directly towards caring for the dogs in our care until we can find them a permenant home. For more details, or a direct debit form, please email rialouiseb@yahoo.co.uk Don’t forget to visit out Charity Shop, Yorkersgate, Malton for household items, Bric-a-Brac, Books, Clothes and Doggy Items. Opening hours: Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday 10am-3pm Dog Fosterers, volunteers & donations always needed. For more details please contact or visit our website. enquiries@ryedaledogrescue.com
