elcome to the June edition. And if you are reading this in the Helmsley or Kirkbymoorside areas, welcome to the Handy Mag Ryedale! We have been publishing the magazine for almost 8 years and whilst it has always been called Handy Mag Ryedale, we haven’t managed to get it out to the whole area – until now… So please have a look through the magazine. I’d love to hear what you think. And if you are part of a small local group or charity, we’d be happy to add your details or events to our listings for free. My car, a Golf, is starting to look (and sound) a bit worn and I decided last month that it really didn’t look good to be driving around in a clapped-out car with peeling off Handy Mag stickers all over it. After all, people recognised me in it! I always get lots of waves when driving around in our distribution areas - which is lovely. Time to remove the stickers, get the car cleaned properly and replace it - or the stickers. Off I went with my hairdryer (helps warm the car so that the

Initially it was very satisfying and the car was starting to look cleaner and smarter, that was until I got a bit over enthusiastic, pulled off a big chunk of sticker and ripped off some of the lacquer! Now I’m driving around in a clapped-out Golf with peeling lacquer and the worst thing is that nobody waves at me anymore! Sunday 16th June sees us all come together to celebrate the most important man in our lives – our dads! Remember to make him feel special. In our house, this will involve our teenagers letting their dad get on with DIY without being disturbed or asking whether he’s putting a top coat of paint on yet! Thank you to Sue Slack, local Pickering-based artist, for the beautiful cover image. It’s called ‘Down Dundale Griff’. More of Sue’s work can be seen on her website at www.sueslack.co.uk. Well done to Mrs Smith of Pickering for winning the April competition. Until next month…

Computer Solutions Keeping your IT running effectively and up to date is a constant battle. Awesome Technologies, part of Arc Electrical UK Ltd based in Malton, provides technical support, computer services and consulting to customers across Yorkshire, whether you are a business with 1 or 500 employees or have problems with your tech at home. Gavin Lawson, Awesome IT expert, says “Our services are transparent - what you see is what you get. We work with our customers and tailor IT support to suit your specific business budgets and requirements.” Awesome Technologies can help with anything from PC and laptop set up and repairs

to software problems and office network design.

Preventative Maintenance

Computers need maintenance. It’s a fact! It’s so easy to put up with slow running computers and simply wait for them to properly break down before asking for help. But imagine how much more productive your business could be if your IT was always in top condition and any downtime was limited. Awesome Technologies can provide you with a support plan to suit your requirements with monthly or weekly visits to ensure your IT always runs smoothly.

Remote Support

No longer do you have to wait for someone from IT support to come and sit in front of your problem computer. There’s now nowhere that Awesome Technologies can’t reach to give you the support you need. Remote support uses a secure connection and gives you a quicker service saving you on travel time and increasing productivity.

Broken Screens & More tech

Awesome Technologies can help with all technology problems including broken ipads, ipods and iphones, VOIP, virtual office and office networks. Gavin explains

how they can also save you money when buying new equipment. “There’s no need to buy new. Our reconditioned computers and laptops provide a costeffective solution to your IT needs. They come with a 3 month warranty, operating systems installed and are fantastic value for money.”

Business Tech

“We have a vast experience in supply, set-up, installation of servers and data security, breakdowns,” says Gavin. “We have even installed systems for monitoring production lines and fuel consumption for companies.” Their experience with all sizes of businesses means that they understand your needs and can provide you with services that help you stay ahead of the competition. Is your data secure? Would it survive a disaster? Many businesses underestimate the importance of their data or don’t want the hassle of organising back-ups and offsite data security. Awesome Technologies can provide an off-site back-up with militarygrade security which is easy to use and automatically saves your data from loss should the worst happen.

Online Shops

A presence online is essential and Awesome Technologies are experts in getting your website and online shop to the top of Google rankings, ensuring your

Where there’s a (badly drafted) will, there’s a way (to contest it)

Y

orkshire folk have a reputation for being careful with money. Yet a recent survey suggests fewer than half of us have a will. What I don’t get is why you’d spend your whole life being careful with money, then let someone else decide who gets the spoils when you die? Husbands and wives assume their money and property automatically go to each other on death. Not so. Instead, “intestacy rules” apply, which means somebody else divis up your stuff and dishes it out. Even when there is a will, your wishes won’t necessarily be followed. Few people know that a valid will can be changed. And a badly drafted will – i.e. one when the wishes of the individual concerned are unclear, can lead to devastating consequences. Divorce and second marriages can raise some particularly thorny issues when it comes to wills. A recent case where a will was contested by warring siblings ended up with nobody but the lawyers getting anything at all. I’m sure that’s not what the deceased would have wanted.

A clear valid will is a vital part of professional financial planning by Julie Wilson – but is overlooked by many advisers. We always discuss wills with clients, and make sure they will achieve the desired effect. They rarely do. Often, old wills contain Discretionary Trusts which are not only no longer strictly necessary, but may actually make things worse. We have several arrangements with some of our legal contacts to get your will written or reviewed at special rates, or even for free in certain circumstances. If you want to make sure your wishes are carried out properly when you’re no longer here, just give us a call. An initial meeting is entirely at our expense and without any obligation. If you’d like a FREE copy of our Factsheet on Wills and Intestacy – which outlines what will happen to your money if you don’t make a valid will, and how to make sure your money ends up where you want, just contact us – details below – and we’ll get one straight to you

When we go to the dentist be it our regular check- up or with a problem our hope is that we will either not require any treatment or that it will be quick, painless and not be expensive. Did you know that it’s within your control to reduce your need for dental by Christine Parker treatment and the associated BDS (GDC 72136) costs to a minimum? By following the following top tips you can just about guarantee yourself improved oral health and save time, distress and money! • Avoid snacks between meals and drink unsweetened tea, coffee or plain milk or water. You can use a sweetner for hot drinks, however diet fizzy drinks and cordial are often very acidic and can strip the enamel from your teeth. • If you enjoy sweet foods/drinks then have them immediately after a meal. • Brush with a fluoride toothpaste twice a day for a minimum of 2 minutes. Your dentist may prescribe you a high fluoride toothpaste if you are seen to be at increased risk of decay. Chew gum containing Xylitol as this also reduces cavities. • Don’t rinse after brushing as this keeps the Fluoride on your teeth and gives maximum protection against cavities. • Use disclosing tablets, they can be purchased from the dentist or chemist. When chewed these stain plaque bright pink/ purple and can highlight where we need to brush better. They are great for adults but your children will love them! • See your dentist at the recommended interval which can be from 3 monthly to 12 monthly depending on your risk. For a comprehensive oral health check and tailor made advice to improve your oral health contact Georgina at Howardian Dental Practice and change the way you look at the dentist.

Ella... ...on dreadlocks

L

et’s start with some facts; I have dreadlocks. At the moment, I have eleven of them. I am not a cavewoman or a wannabe new-age hippie – and, yes, I wash my hair. For those not in the know, a dreadlock is essentially a matted coil of hair that can be formed in numerous ways, all which are commonly disputed among dreadheads. Basically, a long string of knots needs to be created in one section of hair, and over time they become tighter and denser until, voila, dreadlock! Not a lot of people know all that much about dreadlocks, which is fair enough as it’s a pretty alternative hairstyle. As far as I’m concerned, I reserve my teenage right to look as weird as I want to, however, I have come across a fair few misconceptions floating around when it comes to the topic of my hair. First of all, “But dreadlocks are dirty and smelly and they attract headlice”. False. Hair actually forms dreadlocks much more effectively when it is clean and dry, and washing them regularly is really important in keeping them looking neat, as oil or grease reduces friction in your hair, so it’s more difficult to get really tight knots. As for lice, a dreadhead is just as likely to get them as any regular-haired person. Besides, head lice prefer to live in clean hair. Next, “Don’t you have to re-do them everyday?” No, actually, my oldest dreads I did roughly a year ago, and it can take even longer than that for them mature fully, and turn from a knotty string into a nice smooth, round cylinder shape. “Are you Rastafarian or something?” Nope, not that there’s anything wrong with Rastafarianism, but not everyone who has dreads is doing it for religious purposes, some of us just do it for a lowmaintenance hairstyle, or we think they look cool. Also not true is the famous “You’ll have to shave your head when you want to get rid of them”. It is, in fact, perfectly possible to brush out dreadlocks, provided you have copious time, energy and conditioner. Personally, I don’t plan on taking mine out for a while yet. They’re a fun thing to do with my hair, I get to decorate them by stringing little beads onto them, and dreading other people’s hair is a good way to a get a little extra cash! Dreadlocks may not be for everyone, but if you remember just one thing from this article, yes, I wash my hair! -Ella PS Apologies for not updating on the vegetarianism last month, shame on me. For anyone willing to give it a go, it’s totally manageable, in fact laughable so, and nut roasts taste really good! Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 4th June

Keeping it local

P

ure Car Mechanics is a local family business that has always put customers’ safety, convenience and budget at the heart of everything it does. Owners Kev Morris and Ange Snowden have had a busy year adding more services for their customers and taking on a local apprentice. The garage has a reputation for providing a high standard of complete garage services including vehicle servicing and repairs, MOT service and vehicle diagnostics. They can also supply and fit tyres at competitive prices. Plus, you won’t just receive an ordinary service at Pure Car Mechanics. Whatever the make or model of your car, the service is carried out to an industry-standard checklist which goes above and beyond the oil and filter changes. Finally, they’ll make sure your service book is stamped, maintaining your car’s full service history.

Need a new car? Pure Car Mechanics not only service your vehicle but can also find you a replacement. Kev can source the local marketplace to find you a vehicle at a competi-

tive price. There are often cars to view at the garage, but if you know what sort of vehicle you are looking for, drop in for a chat with Kev or give him a call to find out more. And as Kev will be checking the vehicle himself, you can have peace of mind that it will be in good condition.

Investing in the future Being a local business, Pure Car Mechanics are keen to make a positive contribution to the community. Kev and Ange believe that taking on an apprentice is a worthwhile investment for the future, and it also means that they can train someone to their own way of doing things from the start. Ben Bowdler-Orme started as an apprentice at Pure Care Mechanics last year after finishing at a local school, and is already making a fantastic contribution to the garage. “Taking on an apprentice is a big commitment for any business. We are very pleased with the way Ben throws himself into his work and Kev is enjoying passing on his skills,” Ange said.

Supporting the local area Pure Car Mechanics have sponsored Newbridge Park in Pickering for the last 2 years. “We have children and see it as a fantastic community resource,”

said Ange, “So it made sense for us to get involved.” Newbridge Park is designed for the local and surrounding communities to enjoy and anyone is welcome. Sponsorship helps support this community project, woodland management and upkeep of the park. Pure Car Mechanics are offering a 10% discount on labour on production of a Newbridge Park Groupie Card.

Summer motoring Get your vehicle ready for summer motoring with a summer check at Pure Car Mechanics. An air conditioning check will ensure that your vehicle is comfortable all year round.

Making it easier for you In addition to all this, Pure Car Mechanics quite literally go the extra mile to help you out. Forget the hassle of organising a lift or catching a bus back from the garage once you’ve dropped the car off – they will come to your home or workplace, collect the car and return it at a time to suit you. And if you can’t be without your wheels for the day, there’s a loan car available for your use. Contact Pure Car Mechanics on 01751 475794, visit www.purecarmechanics.co.uk or call in at Westgate Business Park, Westgate Carr Road, Pickering.

auto BIOGRAPHIES

Volvo V40

G

ONE ARE the days of ‘wardrobe on wheels’ or ‘only teachers drive those’ jokes. Volvo now has some seriously stylish cars in its stable - and the V40 is the latest one. Like all Volvos it is well built but this one has a definite athletic appearance about it. From the twin tailpipes to the low profile tyres on 18 inch rims the V40 D4 SE means business. But does it deliver? Absolutely. The 1984cc five cylinder, 20 valve oil-burner churns out 175bhp, so 0-62 comes in at a rapid 8.6 seconds. The wide car sits low on the road and takes corners on rails. The diesel rattle is barely noticeable, even on start up, and, as with all Swedishmade cars, the seats are ultra supportive on long commutes. The V40 isn’t just about performance and grip though; it also provides enough space for four-up. The boot, although not massive, is decent enough

32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

to shove in everything a young family might need – from a week’s worth of shopping to a couple of baby buggies and all the gear that goes with young kids. Of course, safety is never an issue with Volvo and the V40 is no different. It is the safest car in its class, having achieved the highest score ever recorded by EuroNCAP in recent crash tests. This is thanks, in part, to pioneering technologies such as the world’s first pedestrian airbag and Volvo’s autonomous braking system, City Safety, which also now qualifies for reduced insurance premiums. And, as you might expect with a diesel turbo, the £24,795.00 V40 D4, on test here, is an efficient motor. On average it can return up to 65.7mpg, so it certainly endorses Volvo’s thinking that it “offers the solution for drivers who want a premium vehicle experience with low emissions and low running costs, but who don’t want to sacrifice equipment, styling or safety

By Tim Barnes-Clay Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk @carwriteups

features”. Put simply, the V40 delivers unprecedented choice in the premium hatchback sector without compromise. It’s a great car; not the cheapest – but you get what you pay for - usually.

Breathe new life into your soft furnishings

W

ith the summer sun streaming in at the windows, now is the perfect time to cast an eye around your home and decide what needs refreshing or revamping. You may stick to a fresh coat of paint, but new soft furnishings are an easy way to revitalise a room. In these days of austerity, the current trend is towards simplicity and functionality – but this need not mean that curtains and blinds have to be dull or mean. There is a huge choice of fabrics in every weight, pattern and colour; and the correct advice about how best to dress your window will mean that you let the light in and keep the draughts out. If you’re planning to update your interior this year, make an

appointment for Jackie to bring you a fantastic range of fabrics to your home so that you can see how they will look in situ. From the classic, understated natural fabrics of Ian Mankin through wool plaids woven in Britain by a small family firm, quirky country-style fabrics from Voyage, luxurious silks from Leeds’ own James Hare, heavy velvets from West Yorkshire and printed linens from Edinburgh Weavers, there is something for every taste and pocket. Co-ordinating wallpapers? – no problem! No poles or tracks? Jackie can bring those too, and have them fitted for you if you prefer. • • • VIPs opening the Society’s new offices in Malton last year. L-R: Professor Tom Solomon, Ava Easton, CEO, Rebecca Adlington, Professor Barbara Wilson, Mathew Bose.

The Encephalitis Society is a registered Charity whose home is in Malton, North Yorkshire. The Society has resisted pressure to move to London and takes pride in supporting and being part of the local Yorkshire economy. Being the only resource of its kind in the World on Encephalitis, it has been described as a jewel in the crown of Yorkshire. Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain usually caused by infection or by our own immune system erroneously attacking the brain. Encephalitis is indiscriminate showing no respect for age, sex, nationality or culture and we estimate around 4000 new cases every year within the UK. Mortality (death rate) is high (1030%) even with treatment. With improvements in drug therapy and intensive care treatments more people are surviving than in the past. This means that many people are left with an acquired brain injury, the degree and severity of which will vary. The nature of such a hidden disability often means people’s needs are not met or recognised. The Society’s vision is to live in a world where Encephalitis is as rare as it possibly can be, given its eradication is unlikely; and that those affected, as well as their families, have access to early diagnosis, excellent management of their condition, timely access to rehabilitation and other forms of social support. Their aim is to improve the quality of life of all people affected directly and indirectly by Encephalitis, and they achieve this by: 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

supporting adults and children affected by Encephalitis, their families and carers by providing advice and information and working at a national and international level to improve services. producing evidence-based, quality information on all aspects of the condition in printed, electronic, video and audio formats. raising awareness about the condition and its subsequent problems among relevant professionals, statutory agencies and the general public. conducting research and work in partnership with other researchers and their establishments.

The Society values the support it has been shown by the Yorkshire community, particularly in recent difficult economic times. If you would like to support the work of the Society you can do this in a number of ways:

• • •

Do you own a Company and are looking for a Charity Partner? Have you got skills/expertise you would like to volunteer? Would you like to make a donation to their work, or hold a fundraising event?

The Society also supports their local community by hiring out its Executive meeting and training room. The room can be set up in a number of different ways and can accommodate up to 25 people. Full AV and conferencing facilities are available along with refreshments and basic secretarial services. The meeting room is provided at very competitive rates and a brochure and pricing structure can be obtained by contacting The Society below or clicking this link:

Swimming Sisters

Ryedale sisters Ami Walker and Nancy Hudson are taking part in the Great Manchester Swim on 20th July and the Lake Buttermere swim on 15th September to raise money for Diabetes UK.

Ami, Mole and Nancy “We are raising money for Diabetes UK because we have friends and family who have diabetes.” says Ami, ”Also Nancy’s dog Mole was diagnosed with diabetes recently.” Ami, who works as a Land Management Advisor at North York Moors National Park, swam in the Great Manchester Swim in 2012 and raised more than £1300 in sponsorship for charities. “I am never happier than when I am swimming,” says Ami. “And if we can raise funds for Diabetes UK in the process that would be great.” Ami’s sister Nancy is a Veterinary Nurse at Eastgate Vets in Pickering and is looking forward to her first open water swim! If you would like to contribute and help Ami and Nancy reach their target, there will be a bucket on the counter at Eastgate Vets or you can give online at www.diabeteschallenge.org.uk/ challenge/sistersswimatsalford Diabetes Week runs from 9th to 15th June.

Bring the outside in

M

with bifolding doors

aking more room for a growing family or a better space in your home for a kitchen or living area has never been easier with the recent relaxation in planning laws. The new rules mean that homeowners can now build bigger extensions without needing planning permission and at less cost. Local building firm, Rising Builders in Pickering, have seen a surge in demand for their services over the last year. Owner, Andy Rising, takes a hands-on approach to running the business and inspires commitment and loyalty across his team, that has remained constant for over 8 years. This has produced glowing results both in terms of an outstanding portfolio of work and an everexpanding customer base. If you are planning an extension, it is worth giving Andy a call first as, with his vast experience, he can offer creative solutions for your particular requirements. Andy says “The most popular kind of extension we do is kitchens - its a room that’s easily adapted to a family room giving much needed extra living space.” Rising Builders are currently

installing a lot of bifolding doors in their extensions. These multifolding doors create a 90% clear opening in walls and are a fantastic alternative to french doors. They can even be used internally to separate living areas or create a large modern space. Bifolding doors in your home extension give you all the benefits of an outside bright space but with a proper room structure. “They are an easy alternative to conservatories and ideal for our British weather,” Jo Rising explained. Rising Builders emphasise attention to detail and improving existing homes over building from new, which proves popular with homeowners. The service they offer is comprehensive - their excellent relationships with good local plumbers and electricians - as well as the council - means that you can literally leave everything up to them.

Rising Builders Ltd

Andy and his team have built a reputation for being able to deal with remedial works on older properties such as damaged mouldings. “It is always better to call in reputable local tradesmen,” Andy says. “We also try and support other businesses in the area by sourcing as many products locally as we can.” With a friendly local and experienced team, a proven track record of over 20 years of high quality workmanship, together with cost-effective quotations, Rising Builders can help you with any size of project from an entire house renovation to minor alterations. Give them a call on 01751 472124 or 07876 457967.

E

very year it amazes me how the plants respond so dramatically to the arrival of the warm weather. Anything sown or planted out in May seems to positively leap out of the ground and shoot skywards, in many cases quickly catching up with earlier sowings! Of course the lawn is no exception and if you don’t already have a composting system in place then why not set one up now and make use of some of those endless grass clippings? Ideally you want to have two (or even three) compost

bins so that when one is ready to use for the garden you have another filling up and rotting down. You can buy allsorts of nifty looking, ready made, compost bins - some even have clever devices that make it easy to turn the whole bin to help the waste break down - but you don’t need anything fancy. You can just start a compost heap in an out of the way corner, enclosing it with old pallets, or wire mesh wrapped around four stakes if you want to keep it looking a little neater. So what should you compost? Well any dead organic matter will decompose naturally but you should aim for a good mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’

Lawn trimmings, veg leaves and peelings provide the green element and you should add a reasonable balance of brown items such as shredded paper, straw, eggshells and even the contents of your vacuum cleaner bag. Summer, sunshine and strawberries, June is a truly wonderful month! In this time of plentiful growth we take a look at making the most of your waste clippings by turning them into lovely rich compost to use next year, and also how to make the most of every inch of your space.

Jobs for June Take off the side shoots from tomato plants to avoid them becoming too bushy and overburdened with fruit. Water regularly. Garlic that was planted in the Autumn should be maturing now. Lift when the leaves start to shrivel and leave to dry in a warm spot. Keep planting - the moist soil, higher temperatures and long days are ideal growing conditions. French beans, courgettes and salad crops can all be sown now. Watch out for pests! Think about protecting brassicas before caterpillars start to become a problem.

I

returned from the supermarket the other day with my car full – not of food but cardboard boxes, they happened to have an exceptionally good range by the checkout tills.

I am always on the lookout for good boxes for my pets, as they are free and provide all sorts of uses and are easily replaceable. Pet rabbits like to have things to hide under in their outdoor runs to provide shelter from rain or shade from sun and also security if they are frightened by something. I up turn cardboard boxes and cut a hole in one side and a hole or flap in the other to provide some entertainment and a good thing to chew or gnaw on. My little boy also finds it hilarious if we cut smaller holes in the ‘roof’ of the box and poke dandelions through then watch them disappearing into the box as the bunnies eagerly pull them through. Cats always seem to make a b- line for any cardboard box lying around the house, the tray shape boxes make good beds – I’ve even seen them stacked to make ‘bunk beds’.

RYEDALE • JUNE 2013 • ISSUE 89 My cousin’s cats sleep in double decker banana boxes by the Aga with the older stiff cat on the ground level with a little cut out on the side for ease of entry and the younger cat on the top tier, the whole thing would be purring when you came down in the morning! Another great gift for your cat is a cat nip plant for the garden. This is a lovely and long flowering herb and is used for making cat nip toys but the real thing is even better! My cat loves lying and rolling on the plant when he comes across it and we break off fronds, crush the leaves a bit and play – he goes quite crazy for it whether it is green and growing in the summer or dried up and brown in the winter.

There is no end of toys available for dogs with different things suiting dogs of different sizes and breeds. The humble cardboard insert from a kitchen or toilet roll will always provide some ‘free’ entertainment. Toys

also have different purposes, there are some that will involve interaction with their humans, things to throw and tug. Others are useful to keep your dog occupied when you are not around. Raw-hide chews, pigs ears and dentistix are useful not only to give your pet something to do but also help to promote healthy gums and teeth by chewing which stimulates saliva production in the mouth and has an antibacterial effect. One of my colleagues used to leave ‘ kong’ toys stuffed with bits of food (you can use some of their usual dry food or even smear the grooves with canine toothpaste) hidden in various places in the dog’s environment for them to seek out and consume whilst she was out. The favourite toy for a certain springer spaniel friend of mine is a torch and somewhere dark, she never seems to tire of chasing the light and entertaining whoever she can entice to play with her!

Ryedale Walking Group

A well established group with over 60 members, based in Ryedale. Most of our weekend walks are 5-12 miles in length. In addition, during the Summer months, we have weekday evening walks and will be trialling a weekday walk, which are usually about 5-6 miles in length. We also organise short walking breaks for our members. New members are welcome to join us anytime. We have a modest annual membership fee of £5 to cover insurance and expenses. The social side of our group is important too, so we often frequent tearooms, pubs, fish & chip shops, look in churches and at anything of architectural interest. Our members enjoy a 10% discount at local walking shops. Reason to Believe Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church

Many years ago, I was leading a service when a man walked in carrying some bongo drums. This wasn’t usual (in case you’re wondering...) and what was even more worrying is that as he approached I realised he had a snake around his neck! At this point a million things began racing through my mind but most importantly I believed the snake was real! What do we believe? Sadly, there seems to be a growing number of things I find hard to believe yet some things I’m more certain of now than I’ve ever been. Belief is part of everyday life. What we believe affects the way we behave. If we believe in being honest, we don’t lie; if we believe in politeness we try not to be rude. The reverse is also true. We can tell what someone believes by the way they behave. If someone drops litter, they don’t believe in saving the planet! Who do we believe? Do we believe the reporters whose stories we read in the papers? Do we believe the local politician who promises to fight for our cause and serve our community? Do we believe the doctor who gives his trained diagnosis or do we believe our research on Google? Do we believe the minister who comforts us in our time of need? Sadly, I find it hard to always know who or what to believe but there are some things I am certain. There are some big questions I have explored and made a decision that I believe. The more I live according to these beliefs the more certain I have become. In a world where we have been let down by many of the things and people we have believed in, I find more and more people considering the bigger questions of ‘belief.’ For example, do we believe what we do matters, do we believe in anything after death or do we believe in a creator? To help explore those questions and many more we will be running a course at Hope Central called Reason to Believe. Our guest speaker will be Mark Greenwood and he will be looking at whether it is reasonable to believe in a Bible when it’s been changed, in a God that we can’t see, in a God of love in a world of suffering and if Christianity is right? The course is free and there will be opportunity to ask questions and, of course, to tell us what you believe. If you would like more information call in at Hope Central or go to www.elimryedale.net. And in case you were wondering, the snake was fake! www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 57

A Good Read Glass Geishas by Susanna Quinn Susanna Quinn’s debut novel, Glass Geishas, is a thriller set in modern day Tokyo – specifically in the notorious Roppongi district, where everything has a price. As the novel opens, Steph, the principal character, is just arriving in Japan with the specific aim of making as much money as possible as quickly as possible. However, her friend Annabel seems to have vanished – and her other friend Julia does not seem to recognise her, let alone welcome her. Something is clearly wrong. Having found Annabel’s abandoned diary, Steph sets out to find out what has happened to her friend and quickly becomes involved in the hostess trade. As the novel moves on, Steph’s own quest is intercut with two other storylines. The first, a set of emails from Chastity, an established hostess, shows the harsh reality of the life that Steph is moving into. The second, the memoirs of Mamasan, owner of one of Roppongi’s oldest clubs, explores how the trade has developed and changed over time. By the end of the novel, these strands are drawn together into a twisting conclusion which will keep you gripped.

Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus by Mo Willems What do small children like best in a picture book? If anyone knows, it is Mo Willems, who spent several years as a scriptwriter for ‘Sesame Street’. And here, what he has hit on is that little word beloved of toddlers – ‘NO!’ The premise of the book is simple – and summed up neatly in the title. The reader needs to stop the pigeon driving the bus while the bus driver is away for a few minutes. However, this is a very determined pigeon. On every page he comes up with a good reason why he could, should and must drive that bus. Reading this book aloud is a delight. As you read the pigeon’s increasingly desperate attempts to get behind the wheel, your audience can say – or shout – ‘No!’ at each page, usually accompanied by a great deal of giggling. And parents will recognise the toddler’s range of tactics – from pleading, to sulking, to promises to ‘be your best friend’ – all of which are summarily rejected. With simple drawings and a thoroughly endearing main character, this is ideal to read to pre-school children of any age. The pigeon makes several reappearances in Willems’ other books – ‘Don’t Let The Pigeon Stay Up Late’ is probably the next one you will want to seek out, and it is just as much fun. Really.

Quinn has clearly drawn on some of the recent writing about Japan and the significance of the geisha. However, her portrait is far from romanticised, and whilst her hostesses are certainly as elegant and glamorous as the traditional geisha and maiko, Steph’s world revolves around alcohol, sex and money – a fragile combination which puts her in significant danger. If the novel has a fault, it is in the slow reveal of Annabel’s diary – it is hard to believe that Steph, curious as she is, would not read the whole book at once. However, this is a minor point, and by stringing this out, Quinn is able to keep us guessing at what has happened to Steph’s friend – and what will happen to Steph herself – making us turn the pages rapidly as the end approaches. 58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WALK TEN 20 July Marie Curie Walk Ten

Raise money to care for terminally people in your area by taking part in Marie Curie’s 10K twilight walk at Castle Howard this July. Afterwards enjoy picnics and after-dark entertainment finishing with a special nursing message and celebration of light. Together, the walkers and their supporters, helped raise more than £30,000, funding over 1000 hours of Marie Curie Nursing at last year’s event for nursing care in the local community, so that more terminally patients can continue to be treated in their own homes. Support your local Marie Curie Nurses by joining hundreds of people on a 10k twilight walk through the beautiful grounds and estate of Castle Howard. Write your own personal message for a loved one on a candle bag, and our glowing display of remembrance will welcome you on your return, after which you can picnic or treat yourself to something special from our caterers whilst enjoying the live entertainment. The evening will conclude with a special Nursing message and a celebration of light at 10pm, the time at which our nurses are starting their shifts in a patient’s home. With your help and support Walk Ten at Castle Howard will raise money for the care of people with terminal illnesses and provide support for their families. Every £20 you raise will allow Marie Curie to provide another hour of care. To find out more or to register go to www.mariecurie.org.uk/walkten or call 0845 052 4184

Sessions held weekly during term time at the spacious Village Hall, Tuesday nights 7 – 8.30pm. Extra half hour needed either side for setting up & clearing away. All that is needed is enthusiasm. YORKSHIRE COAST DOG RESCUE Pickering & Malton Branch of Yorkshire Coast Dog Rescue are pleased to announce that when all the money comes in from the Auction it will be over £2000.We would like to thank everyone who helped in any way. More dogs than ever are getting abandoned and given up so we really need to do more fund raising to enable us to rescue them. Please look at our web site to see all the wonderful dogs we have at the moment, no doubt there will be lots more by the time Handy Mag goes to press. If you are not able to adopt, why not consider fostering - this is so worthwhile, it gets dogs out of kennels into homes to prepare them for adoption, making room in kennels to save more dogs. If you can help fund raising or would like to donate prizes please look at our Facebook page or ring Kate on 01751 473245. By the time you read this little 15 year old Jak will have done a sponsored walk to raise money for us.

RODNEY Our handsome boy Rodney has been returned as his new owners feel they cannot give him the lifestle he needs. He is such a loving boy and we are looking for a home with a secure garden where he will have the opportunity to run round and release his energy

TOM 10 year old collie cross Tom has a lovely, friendly personality. He enjoys his walks and may be a golden oldie but still enjoys life to the full.
