Editors Letter elcome to the March edition of the Handy Mag.

The days are finally getting much longer. I know this because we can walk our dogs in the light every morning. During the Winter, our black lab puppy has been running in and out of hedges and gardens unseen, apart the odd flash of bright eager eyes. Occasionally he will hide in hedges until our older, more sensible dog, walks past when he pounces causing much barking and mayhem - not what you need early morning in the dark! So Spring is on the way. Don’t forget that the clocks go forward on the 27th March. Mothers Day is late this year - Sunday 3rd April - but there are some great ideas for gifts in the magazine - so no excuses! With Spring comes the wedding season and there is a local fayre at the end of March so if you are getting married in the next year, why not go along and see what local wedding businesses can offer (p23). If you have young children, you might be interested in Barton le Willows playgroup near Malton. It has a lovely cosy family atmosphere - the ideal place to take busy toddlers (See page 37 for more). I’m always pleased to hear that the magazine is so well read and used. Thank you to everyone who supports our local businesses. Until next month...

Marianne ps If you have anything you wish to place in the April edition, the deadline is Tuesday 1st March.

HOMES & GARDENS

Stuff it

With the approach of spring comes the irresistible urge to sort out our storage. Katherine Sorrell offers some options to help even the untidiest of households become a haven of clutterfree simplicity.

G

ood storage is truly life-enhancing – it will make your home more spacious and attractive and, while you’ll still have to make the effort to put things away, it will be a darn sight quicker and easier to do. It’s easily said, but absolutely true, that you can never have too much storage; in real life, a good aim is for about 10-20% of each room (give or take, depending on the room) to be given over to storage of some type or another. The two chief options when it comes to storage are tailor-made and built-in, or off-the-peg, free-standing pieces. The former is often neater, takes up less room and is ideal for awkward spaces, but can be costly and can’t be taken with you when you move. The latter is portable and (often) less expensive, but tends to be bulky and must be chosen with care to co-ordinate with other furnishings.

Ten golden rules of storage 1. Don’t store items you no longer need.

Regularly assess what’s vital to your life and, if something’s not, sell it or give it away. Freecycle is a global organisation dedicating to keeping good stuff out of landfill – sign up to your local group at www.freecycle.org and you’re likely to find a taker for most things.

2. Possessions that are used only occasionally

can be stored in attics, sheds or the backs or tops of cupboards, reserving easily accessible storage space for the stuff you need to get at all the time.

3. Don’t place heavy items higher than shoulder height or lower than knee height.

. Stacking boxes look great and save space – but if you need to get at the contents quickly and easily, don’t put them in the bottom boxes.

5. Don’t be afraid to adapt storage that was

originally designed for other uses. Plan chests, hanging racks and so on can be bought at office-supply companies or second-hand shops. And multi-functional furnishings are great: dining or coffee tables with drawers, beds with deep drawers, bench seats with lifting lids; even some basins and baths now have slim drawers or cupboards built-in.

. Use every inch of space by building storage

above doors and windows, high up on walls, in alcoves or under sloping ceilings. You can even fit shelves or cupboards into disused fireplaces, while wall racks or ceiling pulleys can be used for bikes or similar items.

7. Avoid open-shelf storage anywhere visible

unless you’re totally confident in your ability (and that of the rest of your family) to keep what’s kept on them tidy and dust-free.

8. Store small things in small containers (Lego, toy soldiers, beads) and large things in larger containers. It really works.

. If things keep ending up in the wrong place, consider whether it’s your family being untidy or the fact that the stuff would be better stored elsewhere.

10.Finally, plan storage with military precision – Elfa’s set of two birch-faced shelves and a rail are height-adjustable and hang from a top track that requires just three or four screws to install. It can be fitted either in an open hallway or in a generously sized cupboard, and costs £204. (A Place for Everything, 0870 224 2660; aplaceforeverything.co.uk)

• info@thehandymag.co.uk

it’s tedious but really worth spending a couple of hours adding up exactly what’s going to go inside each space and how much room it will take up. by Katherine Sorrell

here is more to enjoying your bathroom than simple hygiene. Whilst it is essential that bathrooms remain practical, they can also have inspirational looks creating the perfect mood.

The smallest room in your house should be a place where you can relax but it can be the most difficult to get right, with plumbers, electricians, tilers, plasterers and maybe even joiners required to help you. Whether you are replacing your current bathroom, extending or even building a new home, Bluewater Bathrooms at Clifton Moor can not only supply the bathroom itself but also provide all of the services required to achieve your perfect room and at an affordable price. Bluewater Bathrooms is a small friendly business specialising in high quality bathrooms, wet rooms, shower rooms and cloak rooms at affordable prices. These can be fully fitted and installed or can be supplied complete should you choose to install yourself. The business was started in early 2010 by Peter Reynolds and Adrian Lount both of whom have worked in the building/plumbing/tiling trade for many years. Following 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

customer feedback they decided to branch out and open a bathroom showroom and after several months of searching for suitable premises around the York area, they took over the unit in Audax Close. After a short period installing displays and setting up, the showroom opened for business in March of last year.

“We believe our ability, creativity and service are of the highest possible quality. We only use quality materials to ensure your bathroom brings lasting pleasure and is practical and inviting,” says Adrian. “With our expertise, organisation and commitment we can transform any bathroom into a place of comfort and style.” Bluewater Bathrooms has experienced staff that will help you plan and design your perfect bathroom, manage the supply of fixtures and fittings and undertake the installation to very high standards whilst making sure that it all remains tightly within your budget. The business places great emphasis on customer satisfaction and are proud of their track record. “We guarantee an honest and trustworthy service with quality workmanship assured,” says Peter. “We also ensure that we are always on

site to manage each project from start until finish and we know our dedicated work will leave you completely satisfied.” Bluewater Bathrooms are continually looking to increase the range of bathrooms on offer to ensure that there will always be something for everyone. Whether you require a traditional suite or something modern and contemporary, you will find it at Bluewater Bathrooms York. As well as bathroom work, Bluewater Bathrooms also offers new wet rooms and cloakrooms. Wet rooms can be an elegant and desirable solution for any bathroom with their contemporary feel and efficient use of space. Getting a wet room perfect can be challenging but Bluewater Bathrooms have the necessary experience to guide you to the right decisions for your room and situation. For quality products and service, friendly and experienced staff and competitively priced bathrooms, visit Bluewater Bathrooms at Clifton Moor. The showroom is open Monday to Saturday. Why not pop in and see the displays and talk to a member of staff about your requirements.

I am writing to tell you how thrilled we are with our wet room and to thank you and your team for your excellent workmanship. Nothing has been too much trouble and we have been most impressed with your after care service. Mrs Wilson, Osbaldwick

Smoked haddock with butter beans and spinach

E

arlier this year top chefs took part in the Big Fish Fight on Channel4 championing sustainable seafood and encouraging us to diversify our fish eating habits by trying some of the lesser known local fish like Coley, Dab and Pouting.

If you’re interested in finding out more the Marine Conservation Society produces a well researched guide to sustainable fish and provides a search facility at www.fishonline.org. Haddock from the NE Arctic and the North Sea is sustainable but if in doubt ask the fishmonger or look for the Marine Stewardship Council logo on the pack.

Ingredients (serves 4)

800g smoked haddock (4 thickish pieces) 3 x 410g tins of butter beans, drained and rinsed 1 large bag of spinach leaves, not the baby leaf salad Butter for greasing the dish 250ml milk Fresh bay leaves Good handful of fresh parsley, chopped 1 x 284ml pot double cream 1 heaped tablespoon grain mustard Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste

Method

8. Pour over the fish (it won’t quite cover) and bake on the middle shelf of the oven for about 40 minutes until the cream is bubbling and the sauce has thickened around the beans. 9. When the fish has reached its final 10 minutes cooking time, pop some plates in the oven to warm. 10. Wash and drain the spinach and heat a good knob of butter in a large frying pan or wok. Stir fry the spinach until just wilted (you may need to do this in 2 goes if there’s a lot of spinach). Season to taste with salt and black pepper. 11. By this time the haddock should be ready serve the haddock and beans with the spinach on the warmed plates.

1. Preheat the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4. 2. Put the smoked haddock in a large pan with 3 bay leaves, the milk and enough water to just cover the fish. 3. Bring to the boil, cover and simmer for about 10 minutes until barely cooked. Transfer to a plate to cool. Reserve the milk to top up the cream later on in the recipe. 4. Butter a large ovenproof dish and spoon in the beans. 5. Take the skin off the fish and remove any bones with your fingers and lay on top of the beans. 6. Finely chop the parsley and mix it with the cream and mustard in a bowl or large jug. 7. Check whether the haddock is salty (sometimes it can be) and if not add salt to the cream as well as black pepper. Mix in 4 tablespoons of the reserved milk. 14 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

BUILDING SURVEYING service

B

uying or renting a property, whether it is a house or commercial premises, can be a daunting prospect especially when considering future maintenance liabilities. An accurate and detailed assessment of a building’s condition can mean the difference between peace of mind and years of unwanted expense. Pinfold Building Consultancy is a new venture set up, by Chartered Building Surveyor Karl Tumman, to provide both residential and commercial clientele with quality, impartial construction advice across a broad range of building related matters. Karl became a chartered building surveyor in 1994 and since then he has gained a breadth of knowledge and experience across a wide spectrum of building surveying activities – residential,

commercial, rural, public works, conservation – and, latterly, working for a multi-national loss adjusting firm dealing with, often, complex construction related claims. Being the son of a stonemason, Karl has always maintained a strong affinity with the construction industry and architectural design. His experience ranges from analysis of individual defects to the project management of multi-million pound construction projects. Listening and understanding client need is the most important facet a construction consultancy can have. This is closely followed by the ability to provide accurate specialist advice, utilising detailed knowledge of how buildings are put together and how they ultimately perform during their lifespan.

Rango

A household pet named Rango (voiced by Johnny Depp) goes on an adventure to discover his true self. Gore Verbibski directs from a screenply by John Logan.

Ironclad

It is the year 1215 and the rebel barons of England have forced their despised King John to put his royal seal to the Magna Carta. Yet within months of pledging himself to the great charter, the King reneged on his word and assembled a mercenary army on the south coast of England with the intention of bringing the barons and the country back under his tyrannical rule.

The Adjustment Bureau

The Adjustment Bureau is a thriller that will keep the intellect on high alert. David Norris (Matt Damon) is a politician on his way to the Senate. When he meets dancer Elise (Emily Blunt) it looks as though he may have love and power all within his sights when fate intervenes. A metaphysical thriller with shades of Inception.

roline Windows was established by Dave Morrison 17 years ago. An experienced PVC fitter, Dave set up Proline Windows to offer a supply and installation service in Ryedale: the main objective being to fit quality products at a reasonable price. Now with a team of 7 skilled staff and a wealth of experience, Proline Windows are able to provide each customer with sound advice and excellent service. “Upgrading your windows and doors will repay you in terms of warmth, lower energy bills, peace of mind and ‘kerb appeal’”, Dave says. “Be it a single window for your bathroom, an entire replacement of all windows and doors or a new build conservatory.” Only Quality Assured products are used by Proline Windows which are guaranteed to last and are fitted by fully trained and skilled tradesmen. A comprehensive 10 year manufacturer’s guarantee gives you complete peace of mind. Proline supply Pilkington energiKare™ glass which is a double glazing system designed for highly energy efficient windows. A Window Energy Rating of ‘A’ means that much less heat is lost through your windows. The resultant 90% increase in the insulation factor can save you, on average, up to £13800 over a 20 year period. This is a window system that not only pays for itself but also helps the environment. With the hike in fuel bills this year, energy efficiency is at the forefront of any home improvement. Proline Windows are launching photovoltaic solar panels to homes in Ryedale this Spring. “The installation of photovoltaics, means that you have your own clean, independent renewable power source,” says Dave, “This can reduce your electricity bills by up to 100%, depending on your consumption and the size of the system purchased. They work in daylight all year round and surplus electricity can be sold back to the National Grid.” Proline Windows pride themselves on providing a reliable and efficient service, high quality products and a high standard of installation. over a fantastic safe play area to the rear and to barns beyond. It is easy to see why the playgroup is a popular place for those families who attend. Children come from a wide catchment area stretching across southern Ryedale. Many sessions are themed and involve craft, songs, stories, active play and a snack.

B

arton le Willows Playgroup has been helping children feel confident and secure whilst they grow from birth to school age for over 30 years. Originally run from Welburn Village Hall, the playgroup moved to Barton le Willows in the 1980s. Jayne Carr has played a big part in running the playgroup ever since. “It just has a lovely family feel.” explains Jayne. Based on the edge of a quiet rural lane, the playgroup offers a welcoming and relaxing environment for children. The windows of Barton le Willows village hall look out

Qualified playleader Tammie Saunders oversees the sessions. A range of play equipment is freely available for children to enjoy indoor and outdoor open play. “We encourage both individual play and teamwork in order that children develop new interests and social skills.” says Tammie. “We work with parents to ensure that your child feels confident and secure and we are always grateful for the support of our parents.” The playgroup is run by a voluntary committee of parents. The group receives no funding other than their weekly fees and has to run fundraising events throughout the year to cover costs such as hall hire, wages and insurance.

Recent fundraising events have included a ‘Sponsored Toddle’ around the village and regular raffles. Speaking to parents on the day I visited, they were full of praise for the playgroup. “My son absolutely loves it.” said one mum. “It’s a wonderful place to bring your children.” Amanda Morris, the current chairperson, says “It’s like a family and there is never a dull day!” The playgroup is currently held on Friday mornings between 9.30am and 11am. If you are looking for a friendly local playgroup to take your children, give Tammie or Amanda a call on 07815 573471 or 01653 619710.

Conversions With the housing market so depressed at the moment, moving house can be an even more expensive and stressful experience than it usually is.

C

onverting your loft into an extra room is a cost effective and practical way of creating extra space for you as well as adding value to your home when you do move. This is not a job to be undertaken lightly though. Apart from the cost - around £20,000 upwards - building regulations need to be adhered to and sometimes planning permission is required. Conversion can take time and involves a lot of upheaval. The extra room needs to be reported

Bespoke loft rooms

to your insurance company as it may affect your premium. Also you need to store all the stuff that’s currently residing in your attic! But once that’s all done, you’ll have a fabulous new room. Most lofts can be converted, but there are considerations such as headroom to think about. There’s not much point creating a new room if you can’t stand up in it. The steeper the pitch of your roof, the easier the loft is to convert to a habitable space. A pull down ladder and skylights don’t count as living space when it comes to selling your house. So if you are going to convert, do it properly and contact a local reputable loft conversion specialist for advice.

TRAVEL

Marrakech Springtime in Marrakech is delightful. Snow still clings to the peaks of the High Atlas but in the sun-filled oasis, the scent of orange blossom fills the air. Marrakech is exotic, beguiling yet just a short flight away and no jetlag.

S

et between ocean, mountains and desert, this Berber city and former capital gave its name to Morocco and retains glorious mementos of the past. From the sumptuous Medersa College to the 19th century Bahia Palace or the tombs of the Saadian dynasty, it’s a feast of Islamic architecture, rich in marble, mosaics, fountains, courtyards, stucco work as fine as lace and sculpted archways and columns. Destroyed and pillaged, the old El Badi Palace has no such treasures but its pink crumbling walls and orange grove are among the most haunting spots in town. Storks build their nests on the towers and little disturbs the peace but the ringing of chisels and hammers on the nearby Lantern Square. Copper and brass, lamps, mirrors, trays, tea pots, basket and leather ware, pointed slippers, embroidered gowns, Marrakech offers some of the best craft in Morocco, much of it in the cool covered alleyways of the souks. This is the place to bargain and buy, marvel at wood turners and silversmiths, watch out for donkey carts and lose your way in a dark maze of lanes strung with carpets and skeins of freshly-dyed wool. It’s colourful, overwhelming and laced with the fragrance of mint tea and a thousand spices. After the souks, the gardens are the perfect escape, whether you choose the green oases within the walls, the Palmeraie 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

out of town, with 100,000 palms and a few luxurious dwellings, the royal Aguedal Garden or Menara with its olive groves, pavilion and pool. The Majorelle Garden is small and often crowded but a must-see for any visitor. Created by French artist Majorelle, restored by the famous fashion designer Yves St Laurent, it claims 400 varieties of palms, 1800 of cacti and a lily pond with fabulous reflections. Bright ceramic pots compliment exotic plants and a museum displays local crafts. The garden is elegant, sophisticated, a world away from Marrakech’s most popular evening venue, the Djemaa El Fna Square. When the sun sets over the iconic Koutoubia mosque, the whole city heads towards the central square to enjoy one of the greatest free shows on

earth. Drummers and dancers mingle with fortune tellers, snake charmers, juice sellers, henna artists, acrobats, women peddling unleavened bread and mountain folk offering silver bangles and aphrodisiacs. Soon, white-hatted chefs set up their mobile kitchens, crowds gather on the benches and great clouds of smoke rise into the night. You can feast on couscous and snails, lentil soup, lamb kebabs, meat balls and chickpeas and all sorts of mysterious delicacies sizzling in the pans. Along the avenue, the plush horse-drawn carriages patiently await the return of their hotel clients while in the deserted Koutoubia gardens, the orange trees release their sweetest fragrance to welcome the spring. Daffodil or Narcissus

Deadhead after flowering but don’t remove the leaves. The bulb recharges itself through its foliage and needs the leaves to photosynthesise, so don’t tie them into knots either. Once the foliage dies back, you can cut it if you must, but in nature the leaves go into the soil to provide extra nutrients for the bulb. All parts of the daffodil are poisonous. The bulbs, sometimes mistaken for onions, can lead to accidental poisoning if eaten and the sticky sap from the cut stems can cause dermatitis in some people - wear gloves to pick them. The beauty and gentle perfume of the daffodil is well worth the effort and care.

Y

D

affodil is the common name for all members of the genus Narcissus. The familiar golden heads with their distinctive trumpets come in all sizes from 12 cm to 60 cm. Colours are many and varied; some trumpets are the same colour as the star-shaped background while others are contrasting shades. Overwhelmingly the main colour is yellow, but there are orange, white, pink and green cultivars too. The daffodil is a perennial plant grown from a bulb. Plant large, good quality bulbs in September or October at a depth of three times the bulb’s height.

pets

The importance of geriatric check ups

A

s your pet gets older its organs and hormone system can start to work less efficiently and your pet may become unwell. Often the signs are subtle such as drinking a little more and urinating more often. Other signs that indicate all is not well include eating more or less, restricted movement, sleeping more, appearing depressed, vomiting, losing weight, loss of condition i.e. scurfy greasy coat, aggressiveness and forgetfulness. The list is endless but often owners have a feeling that their pet ‘just isn’t right’ rather than noticing any signs in particular. It is important that you take your pet to the vets as soon as possible if you feel they are unwell especially if they are over seven years old, which is classed as a senior animal. It may be advisable to do a routine blood screen around this age even if you haven’t noticed any symptoms as this can highlight any problems with the liver and kidneys and check for hormone disorders.

It is common for animals kidneys to work less efficiently as they get older and by the time they start to show symptoms their kidneys are functioning at 30% capacity. This damage cannot be reversed once it has been done but it can be prevented from getting worse by feeding a specially formulated diet that is low in phosphorus and contains high quality protein which is easily metabolised by the kidneys, thereby reducing their work load. Blood pressure tablets may be needed where patients have high blood pressure.

TION HOUSE VETS STATION VETS

Other conditions that can affect older pets include:- diabetes, arthritis, liver failure, and hyperthyroidism. Hyperthyroidism is a condition caused by an overactive thyroid gland which dangerously increases the heart rate. Signs seen in your pet would include becoming hyperactive, eating more and substantial weight loss.

Loss of mental function is a common yet lesser known problem which affects 1 in 5 senior dogs and 1 in 3 cats over the age of eight. Changes in behaviour are often the only indicators that your pet may be affected. Signs to look for include becoming short-tempered, appearing disorientated, being less interested in interacting with animals and people and becoming restless. They may also start to bark or cry for no reason, start to have accidents in the house, sleep more throughout the day and be less keen to go outdoors or play. Also your pet may no longer respond to their name or simple commands. If you notice any of these signs contact your vet who can do a thorough examination and prescribe medication to help support your pets mental function and improve their quality of life.

York Cats Protection staff are desperate – desperate to get our gorgeous and sprightly lady Freya, a new home! Freya is our only long-stay cat and we have no idea why! She’s not old, barely touching middle age in fact. She has a strikingly beautiful face and lovely tabby markings. Her favourite past-time is playing with her toys. She has a soft spot for handsome tom cats (even the older gentleman!) So why does Freya still grace our adoption centre? Truth is when Freya came into the adoption centre she was rather spoilt. She refused to eat meat, it was high quality biscuits for her, she didn’t like her feline neighbours, boy did she let them know and she didn’t like to be over-fussed – in short everything was on Freya’s terms! Having being with us for quite some months we have now seen a new, calmer and friendlier Freya emerge. She now quite likes her feline neighbours and will interact with them in a more positive way. She will also hop on your knee for a cuddle and accept fuss – so long as you promise to play with her toy mice afterwards! We would really like to see Freya in a new home as soon as possible. She has blossomed while being with us but we feel she will improve even more once she is in a stable and loving home – where she can really get her paws under the table. If you feel you could offer Freya or any of our needy cats a home please contact the centre on 01904 760356 or drop in and see us at 582 Huntington Road, Huntington, York. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 47

Porsche Boxster Spyder

We are in the presence of an all time great! The Boxster Spyder is white, has two protruding humps and goes like the clappers.

A

t first some people might find it hard to work out what the point of it is. Porsche has stripped it of most niceties – like door handles – and it does without an electric roof, replaced instead by a rudimentary piece of canvas and cling film stapled to the bodywork. Even Porsche admits only around 100 will find homes in the UK each year. But then you get behind the wheel and everything instantly makes sense. This Porsche is a driver’s dream and on the incredible Welsh roads where we tested the Boxster it was a sheer delight. At first it feels twitchy, on edge, alive. The steering has so much feel, it’s light and wriggles in your hands – and that takes some time to get used to. But settle in, tune into the sensations and feedback this stunning Spyder is transmitting and it rewards you with a drive of your life. 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Power comes in linear and fast. That 3.4-litre, 320bhp unit is a gem and, coupled with the Spyder diet, produces impressive performance figures. The sprint to 60mph is dispatched in 5.1 seconds and the way it translates that power into forward momentum so easily will have you beaming from ear to ear. What makes the Spyder so good is the fact it can utilise every single one of its 320 horses, efficiently and effectively. Higher-powered sports cars will out-drag it on the straights, but point the Porsche towards some twisties and it’ll keep up with pretty much anything. We just wish it sounded more potent – the sports exhaust option is a must. However, it’s not just about what’s under that shapely hood. This car looks positively stunning too. In the ice white paintwork our test car came in, it was a crowd-gatherer and those two rear humps behind the headrests have a distinct air of Carrera GT about them. We even managed to nail taking that ‘roof’ off. Yes, it is more complicated than an electric setup, but with practise we got the process down to about two minutes. Fair enough that’s not exactly

quick – and you wouldn’t want to get caught in a downpour – but the hood is where Porsche has achieved most of the weight saving. The biggest problem we can see with this Porsche though is the name. The ‘Boxster’ part in its title just doesn’t fit. This car is good enough – and unique enough – to have earned its own name altogether. It’s a brilliant piece of engineering and one of the all-time Porsche greats – why then, hasn’t the maker christened it properly? By James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)

Books to give mum on Mothers Day

Mother’s Day is almost upon us, and what better way to say ‘thank you’ than with the thoughtful gift of a book. We’ve put together a few of the best to give Mum on her special day.

The Happiness Project

by Gretchen Craft Rubin

Gretchen had everything to be happy for; a successful career, two lovely children and a happy marriage – but she wasn’t satisfied, so she decided to do something about it. Starting on January 1st, the author takes a proactive approach to improving her life – from sleeping more and whinging less, to developing herself spiritually, educationally and philosophically. Easy to read and thought-provoking, ‘The Happiness Project’ is charming, funny and truly inspirational.

Dear Mum, From You to Me concept by Neil Coxon

Ever wondered what your mum was like as a child or how your parents met? Here’s something totally different for Mother’s

Day which will answer all those unanswered questions. Not so much reading material than a little project, this lovely hardback book is packed full with leading questions such as: How did you feel when you found out you were pregnant with me? What was the first piece of music you bought? And what one piece of advice would you offer me? Here is a chance to record your mum’s memories and reveal the book within, something which she’ll enjoy creating which will be treasured by all her loved ones.

How Not to Be The Perfect Mother by Libby Purves

A refreshing take on the usual parenting guide, Radio 4’s Libby Purves has created a humorous and matter-of-fact manual to help with the ups and downs of motherhood. Ideal for any

new(ish) mum, this book is a light-hearted and realistic tome of advice which cuts corners, bends rules, and doesn’t leave the reader feeling like they’ve done a less-than-perfect job. Full of entertaining stories, tips and advice, this is a must-have for any mum who wants less pressure and more enjoyment out of being a parent.

1001 Little Beauty Miracles by Esme Floyd

This beauty bible is jam packed with hints and tips for any lady in need of some TLC. From covering blemishes and making thin hair look thick to dealing with unmentionables such as facial hair, the pages are packed with practical and simple advice. Release your Mum’s inner glamour-puss with this fantastic book - she’ll be sure to thank you for it!

New Local Book... Rock Art and Ritual - Mindscapes of Prehistory

by Alan Walker and Brian A. Smith. £15.99 Published by Amberley Publishing Ltd Following on from their very successful first book on the subject, Alan Walker and Brian Smith have published a second volume, which brings together a multidisciplinary approach and presents explanations for the mystery of prehistoric rock art. Alan, who owns Fersina Windows in Malton, and Brian have spent countless hours studying Rock Art found on the North Yorkshire Moors. Rock Art is the term used for curious shapes and symbols carved into rock during the Neolithic and Bronze Age period and because the hunter gatherers and early farmers in this period had no formal writing system, their lives are shrouded in mystery. Brian and Alan have managed to put data together from a variety of sources including archaeology, anthropology and astronomy to come up with a pattern and a theory to explain the meaning of rock art on the Moors. The first book, Rock Art and Ritual, was reviewed favourably by Antiquities Magazine and was the best selling book in its category on Amazon! It is available for preorder on Amazon now. 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

BUSINESS

Getting to know I.T. A review of the Windows Phone 7 by Nick Teasdale, www.tknowit.net

F

or several years the Apple iPhone has dominated and redefined what a SmartPhone should look like and how it should do things. Microsoft was one of the first with a SmartPhone but it never grabbed the attention that the iPhone did. This is probably because the iPhone was designed for the iPod generation of domestic users and in time it became useful for ‘business’ functions. With the Windows Phone 7 (WP7), Microsoft appear to have gone back to the drawing-board and looked at how they can capture the social networking generation but incorporate the easy to access ideas that the iPhone brought us.

Unlike the iPhone, the WP7 based phones are made by several manufacturers including Samsung, LG and HTC. This means a few more options although Microsoft insists that all WP7 devices must have a 5 MegaPixel camera, 3 standard buttons at the bottom of the screen and a standard resolution screen along with a few other requirements. The phone I have been using for the last couple of months is the Samsung Omnia 7 which replaces an aging iPhone 3G. The phone is slightly wider and about ½” taller but after using it for a while the iPhone screen looks too small and the Samsung is much faster at starting apps, moving through

pages, etc – but then it does have a faster processor than the iPhone 3G – the iPhone 4 may be a similar speed. Everything is easy to setup and use. The design of front page of the WP7 means that you can quickly see missed calls, waiting text messages, email and social networking apps like facebook and twitter. Many of the features that made the iPhone appealing were actually downloaded apps. Obviously these can’t be transferred across but thankfully many of the apps authors have developed apps for the WP7 too.

Like the iPhone it doesn’t currently support Flash video and like the original iPhone it doesn’t do copy and paste yet. An update is planned for jan/feb this year which promises copy and paste and, apparently, speed improvements to various apps start times. The screen on the Samsung Omnia 7 is large, very clear and bright. Video is smooth and audio is clear. The camera takes excellent photos and impressive 720P HD quality video clips. First impressions : Good first attempt at WP7. As with the iPhone I expect it to improve as the features get added through firmware updates in the next few months and beyond. Hopefully it will also allow custom ringtones and several volume controls and possibly features to allow access to office networks like the older Windows Mobiles did.

Anyone wanting to link the WP7 to a corporate MS exchange system will be pleased to know that this is simple so all your emails, contacts and appointments are safely held on the company server. It also comes with Word, Excel and OneNote so you can read and edit MS Office files too. It can also open files directly from sharepoint servers although I haven’t spent enough time trying to make that work.

ucking these times of austerity, Fersina Windows continue to provide excellent value to the region and have been trading in Malton for 25 years this month. “We are delighted to have achieved this milestone,” says Alan, owner of the business alongside his wife Carol. “Thank you to all of our staff and customers who have supported us here in Malton over the years.” The company’s ethos has always been based on superior work, professional staff and excellent customer service. The main core of Fersina’s business has been in supplying high quality hand finished German PVCu windows and doors.
