elcome to the March edition.

Mother’s Day will fall on Sunday 15th March and it’s time to show your appreciation! As a mum, I know! Of course expensive gifts are not needed. Last year, thanks to my daughter, I had breakfast in bed and it was lovely to be made to feel special. Capturing the moment, this month’s column from Emily is all about Mother’s Day. It’s a must read about how she and her sisters treat their mum on Mother’s Day (see page 26). Nicky and I were shamelessly reduced to tears over our keyboards. Lucky lady! Congratulations to Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team on reaching their 50th year. What a fantastic service they provide! All members of the Team are volunteers, receiving neither payment nor expenses for participating in training or incidents. They rely solely on donations and sponsorship so, in this anniversary year, please help them raise the extra £50k target to enable them to further help their local community. Find out more on page 50. The Handy Mags are all about supporting communities. For our businesses we have paidfor advertising space, and for our local charities and not-for-profit groups we give away space for free. However, we have been amazed in the office this month (actually we’ve been pretty cold, but amazed as well!) how few people actually know this. It really is free, utterly free, to local not-forprofit organisations and charities. As a community leader, or a willing member of the public planning a community event how else will you get to say what you are doing to 25,000 households, a possible 50,000 faces! You just have to ask Nicky and she will ‘make it so’; no strings! Well done to Janella Cavert for winning the January competition. Until next month…

THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA BOOKINGS STILL BEING TAKEN The Lottery funded camera is available locally, free of charge, to help you find out exactly where heat is escaping from your home in cold weather, so helping save money and fuel. It could be useful if you are thinking about making improvements to wall and roof insulation. KMEG volunteers have been using the camera in the Kirkbymoorside area since 2012, from late autumn through the winter months into early spring. The best weather conditions are cloudy, dry and cold! The camera picks up heat, rather than light like a normal camera. It’s surprising how much heat can be lost around windows, doors and skirting boards, up the chimney of an unused fireplace, as well as through poorly insulated roofs and walls. This example shows how heat is being lost through a bay window and through the wall from a radiator under the window. Inexpensive solutions could be using thicker curtains and putting foil on the wall behind the radiator to reflect heat back into the room.

THE LIFE YOU CHOOSE AT MICKLE HILL

What do you want in your retired life? A choice of attractive, purpose-built apartments and bungalows? Living in a thriving community surrounded by landscaped gardens, with services including a restaurant, coffee shop, hair salon, gym and convenience shop? Discreet personal care and assistance tailored to your individual requirements? This is what Mickle Hill, an upcoming retirement community, will bring to Pickering. With 90 apartments and 78 bungalows, residents will have a range of choices with the support and assistance they require. Mickle Hill is part of MHA, the national charity providing accommodation, care and support services to 16,000 older people nationwide. Karl Hallows, Development Director at MHA, said, “We’re very glad to be able to provide this service in Pickering, which we believe will empower and enable older people to continue living independent lives in their own homes, now and into the future.” Prospective neighbours recently had a literal taste of life at Mickle Hill, where they gathered to meet each other and sample pastries and cakes prepared by an MHA chef. As well as getting an idea of the quality of catering to expect at the restaurant and coffee shop, guests were able to begin forming the basis of their community. There are more of these events planned for the future, giving interested people a chance to find out more about Mickle Hill and get to know their future neighbours.

hoosing the perfect surround for your fire sets the tone for a room scheme says Focus Fireplaces and Stoves of York.

A fireplace, whatever the season, should be the primary focus in your living space. First, consider the age and size of your home. Unless you want to go for something ultra-chic and modern, the best rule of thumb is to work with the original fabric of your property. If you’re lucky enough to have the original opening – a brick-built inglenook, for example – then you’re ready to consider either an open fire or stove installation.

designs with equal impact,” says Julian Sommers of Focus Fireplaces. “We have seen a move towards a more refrained style which has culminated in the ‘hole-in the-wall’ look where a fire is inserted into the wall with a minimal frame.”

But if you’re starting from scratch, then there’s a fire surround to suit your home. Consider the size and space available – a fireplace that’s too busy is likely to overpower your scheme, but downscale too much and you’ll lose the dramatic focal point you’re after.

Focus Fireplaces have long been recognized as the area’s premier fireplace experts and specialists. Their large showroom features a selection of fires, stoves and fireplaces for all types of homes. The friendly and knowledgeable staff have literally decades of experience in imparting the technical help essential in choosing a new fireplace.

‘There’s a long tradition of framing the fires and stoves in our homes. Materials such as Marble, Wood and Limestone remain firm favourites and have proved capable of carrying either elaborate or simple

HOW TO BLOW YOUR PENSION

Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

I

’m really worried about the new pension flexibility rules due in April this year. In the olden days, you could take up to 25% of your personal pension pot tax free. Anything else usually took the form of a guaranteed income for life – either by buying an annuity (which swaps a capital sum for a regular income) or taking the equivalent directly from the pot – known as “drawdown”. In any event, it was impossible to take the whole pot all at once. The Government have decided that from April, you’ll be able to take the lot. And do whatever you want with it. Blow it on a Lamborghini if you like. Research shows that over half of consumers do not understand the retirement income options open to them. They

don’t understand annuities and they definitely don’t understand drawdown. They don’t understand the financial risks of living longer. They don’t understand the impact of inflation on savings. So how can they make sensible decisions about their retirement income? Most people get that if you blow all your money, you won’t have any left. But what many people don’t get is the real risk of taking your pension all at once. And that risk is tax. Anything taken above 25% will be taxed at your highest rate. So if you take your total pension pot of, say, £100,000 under the new flexible rules, the tax man will get up to £30,000 of it. This “tax grab”, sorry, “investor empowerment”, is expected to generate extra tax of £4 billion by 2020. In my view, there’s never been a more blatant attack on pensions since Gordon Brown’s back door tax raid on pension funds back in 1997 that has so far netted the Treasury £118 billion. Nice work, Gordon! The choir has just begun practising for a new season of concerts in and around Malton and says now is just the right time to take the plunge and join up. Musical Director Vivien Wilcock, who is putting the show songs programme together, says it will include popular show music which will be familiar to everyone, particularly those who know and have sung in musical shows. Chairman Tom Todd added “Anyone who has performed in local musical productions but is no longer active on stage and yet still has these tunes in his head will find this year’s repertoire a joy”.

Tom, who has performed in many shows with Malton & Norton Musical Theatre and in Pickering over the years, founded the choir in 2007 to help fill a perceived musical gap in the town between show productions and the popular pantos. “The choir is very informal, a lot of fun and a very relaxing way to spent an evening” he says. Our members are mainly older men, many of them retired, which reflects the trend in male choirs across the nation. But we have younger members as well”. Founded in 2007, the 25-strong choir goes into its ninth year this coming autumn. This year’s season includes two upcoming concerts with Staxton Singers, its third South Cliff concert in Scarborough and, it is hoped, involvement in a Yorkshire Voices concert currently under consideration for Castle Howard. It meets every Monday night between 7.30 and 9.30pm in the meeting rooms behind Malton Methodist Church in Saville Street. EMILY... ON MOTHER’S DAY

A day that arrives every year with little preamble, resulting in many panicked Google searches for gift ideas or emergency trips to the shops the night before to buy the only battered and slightly wilted bouquet of flowers that’s left on the shelf. A sorry excuse for a day that is designed to celebrate one of the most important people in your life. In my house, however, this is not the case. My sisters and I have worked to get the act of Mother’s Day down to a fine science. First, we make breakfast in bed. This constitutes waking up a lot earlier than deemed ‘normal’ for three teenage girls on a Sunday morning, arguably a sacrifice in itself! Usually one of us has taken the time to go the shops the day previous so we have all of Mum’s favourite breakfast supplies in stock, so it’s easy to to put together the next morning. Present wise, we always go very simple. I honestly believe that a bunch of flowers, some nice chocolates and a simple cup of tea are all that are needed on Mother’s Day, despite what the marketing machine tries to tell you! Then, comes the final teenage sacrifice: our time. Mother’s Day is the day my sisters and I are expected to clear our agenda to spend the day doing whatever my mum wants. Invariably this constitutes a bracing walk at the beach or up a very steep hill. During which, we are not permitted to moan, whinge or argue. However, this is my Mum’s favourite part of the day and (secretly) mine too. It’s not big gestures or expensive things that make Mother’s Day, it’s small gestures and thoughtful acts that may cause inconvenience to yourself for the day. But, isn’t it worth it? A small nod to the free taxis, emotional support and constant champion that is your Mum. This Mother’s Day, give the gift of time. Emily

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

WHAT IS LOVE?

Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church

What have bitcoin, twerking, lupus, fracking, instagram, gout, gluten, FGM and anxiety got in common? They all appear on the top 10 UK ‘what is...?’ searches on Google in 2014. Confused? In 2006, ‘to google’ was added to the Oxford English Dictionary as an official verb. It means to search for information about (someone or something) on the Internet using the search engine Google. It is so popular that, on average, Google processes 40,000 searches per second which translates into 3.5 billion searches per day worldwide. Each year Google publish the top 10 search lists and number one is: what is love? Often, when an individual is being investigated by the police, they confiscate their computer. Why? Because by looking at their computer search history you can discover where they bank, shop, hope to go on holiday, favourite celebrity and more. It has become our confidant, the place we ask our deepest questions and reveal our greatest concerns. However, it is limited and can’t replace an interactive consultation with an expert. It has become a doctor’s nightmare because patients have already diagnosed their own symptoms by searching the internet in the waiting room. It is so bad it has a name. A Cyberchondriac is someone who suffers anxiety through compulsive searching of the internet for information about particular, real or imagined, symptoms of illness. What fascinates me is what the number one Google search reveals about humanity. We have an unquenchable thirst for knowledge but still haven’t satisfied our deepest need; to define and experience true love. According to a Guardian article, our definition of love depends on where you start. For example, for the physicist: ‘Love is chemistry’ but for the philosopher: ‘Love is a passionate commitment’. For me, a Minister, love is the greatest experience and the highest calling. I don’t believe God is loving, it is not something God does, it is who He is. God is love; He is the creator and therefore the definition of love. Christians experience God’s unconditional love demonstrated through an incredible act of love some 2000 years ago. This outrageous love gives complete security, acceptance and purpose to life and not only inspires us to love God but to love our neighbour too. How would you answer the question: What is love...? Clouds To some horizon they try to escape, Traversing an unending sky. Folding and unfolding, changing shape; Misty masses that cannot die. Rarefied things of veiled splendour, dissolving after a storm; To clear and seemingly surrender, Only to reinvent and reform. Carelessly, callously masking the sun, And he forgiving, makes light of this intrusion. For at the end of his westering run, He fires them with gold and a rose profusion. By The Pastoral Poet

A GOOD READ By Willow Coby

The Secret of Crickley Hall

James Herbert This novel from the master of horror does not disappoint. Gabe and Eve Caleigh have moved with their 2 daughters from London to the West Country to escape the memories of their 5 year old son who disappeared without trace from a playground a year ago. Their new home is Crickley Hall, a large house with a checkered past, but it has been empty for many years. As they settle into the community they learn more about the village, and Crickley Hall. Tragedy occurred during the Great Flood of 1943, when the hall was being used to house orphans evacuated during the Blitz. The children and their guardians all perished in the flood, and it would appear that the young victims are not content to remain quiet. Soon Eve starts seeing her missing son

and, like an unstoppable wall of water, the horrors that lie lurking in Crickley Hall flood to the surface. Read it if you dare.

Delphi and the Glass Slippers Darcey Bussell For most young readers, Darcey Bussell will be familiar through the BBC’s Strictly Come Dancing. What they may not be aware of is her career with the Royal Ballet, and she has poured this love and knowledge of ballet into her series of books for young ballet obsessed girls.

The Magic Ballerina books follow the adventures of Delphie, a girl who attends ballet school. She is given a pair of red ballet shoes which turn out to be magical, and are able to whisk her away to the land of Enchantia where characters from famous ballets live. In this book Delphie has to help Cinderella. Guaranteed to delight any budding ballerina, this book is exciting and full of little glimpses into the world of ballet and dancing.

We will be celebrating our anniversary with lots of fundraising events throughout the year and this year one of our supporters, Mandy Clark, is kindly organising an anniversary ball for us at Raithwaite Manor Country Hotel on the evening of Sunday 20th September 2015. DOG OF THE MONTH: Teddy is a one year old Staffie cross. His laid back personality and sweet face is winning everyone around. He is a medium sized but stocky looking dog (he doesn’t know how big he is) Teddy enjoy walks and playing but mainly he enjoys cuddles and fuss. Teddy loves playing ball – he hasn’t quite got the hang of bringing the ball back but will run around for minutes just carrying the ball and wanting you to chase. Teddybear got his name because of his personality and relaxed attitude to life as he is one big baby – would you like something to cuddle up to? To find out more about Teddy or any of the dogs we currently have for adoption please contact us on 07581 324153.

For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue and the dogs that we have currently looking for loving forever homes please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or call us on 07581 324153. (Please bear in mind that the charity is run entirely by volunteers, many of whom work full time so bear with us and we will get back to you as soon as we can)

4TH ANNUAL YORKSHIRE CAJUN AND ZYDECO FESTIVAL, MALTON

13, 14, 15 MARCH The Yorkshire Cajun and Zydeco Festival is back at the Milton Rooms! The event has become recognised throughout the UK and Europe as one of the leading festivals outside the U.S. to feature the music, dance and food of the bayous and prairies of South West Louisiana. Local people are discovering one of the best kept secrets of the music and dance world and are joining enthusiasts from all over the UK and from Europe on the dance floor. After the success of last year’s ‘Mardi Gras’ Sunday, the 2015 festival will keep the Mardi Gras theme all weekend and the Milton Rooms will also be decorated for the duration of the Festival! And for the first time, this year the Festival will coincide with the Monthly Food Market on the Saturday and will incorporate a Cajun/Creole food demonstration and a parade of costumes in the Market Square. There will be dance and instrument workshops, music sessions and Cajun food will be on sale at the Milton Rooms. Centre stage of course will be the live bands with the full line up to be confirmed but already booked to return are ‘The Bluebell Cajun Dance Band’ from Scotland, ‘Rough Chowder’ from the South of England and making their UK debut, from France, ‘La Gang du Queteux’. There will be dancing on the amazing sprung dance floor at The Milton Rooms with plenty of room for dancers and for those who prefer to sit and watch the bands and the dancing! A truly great music and dance experience not to be missed! For more information please visit

BUY US A MINIBUS, BOAT AND GARAGE IN 2015! There are a number of reasons why more fundraising is needed in 2015. In recent years the Team have been pleased to welcome a number of new operational members but with this comes increased training and personal equipment costs.

S

carborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team are celebrating their 50th anniversary in 2015 and they have set themselves a target of raising an extra £50,000. The Team is a totally voluntary organisation and exists to help save lives in the North York Moors National Park. The Scarborough and District Team was formed on the 7th July 1965 with about 12 members and had its baptism on the 26th October that year when six youngsters from Teeside went missing on Fylingdale Moor whilst taking part in the Lyke Wake Walk. Since then the range and type of incidents the Team has had to deal with has expanded hugely as well as the standard of training and necessary equipment. Now with 74 members it costs around £40,000 per year for the Team to maintain their service which includes running their 3 vehicles, training and expenses. Last year they were called to 57 incidents and there have already been 7 call-outs in 2015 (31st January).

50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Over the last 3 years the Team has seen a significant increase in call-outs and now averages in excess of one a week. This adds to increased use of equipment, more frequent servicing and replacement and an increase in consumables. Due to this increase and the nature of the search and rescues undertaken, there is a requirement for additional equipment to execute these with a greater chance of positive outcome. The team have been increasingly involved in working near water, water margin searches and flood response. This is a national trend and not limited to the team but in order to operate in this environment safely they need to qualify and equip team members as Water Rescue Technicians.

The Team is always happy to receive donations and sponsorship from companies but they are also collecting sponsorship for 4 Challenge events taking place around the Moors in 2015 – The Falcon Flyer (20 mile route over the Moors and along Coastal Paths), Ravenscar Coastal half Marathon, The Crosses (a 53 mile circular challenge around the Moors) and the Saltergate Circuit Challenge. The Team are keen to get out and around to talk to clubs, schools, societies to tell their story which they do free of charge but appreciate any donations.

The Team have been raising money for this through the generosity of their supporters but to operate safely and effectively they need an inflatable boat, paddles, suitable medical equipment and a means of getting it all to an incident.

If you would like to show your support to the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue Team, please get in touch.

All of this means that the Team are need of an addition vehicle in their fleet and to extend their base to provide secure storage. With some grant funding and their extra fundraising, they are hoping to achieve this extra facility in 2015.

Flaxton Childrens’ Nursery Develop Forest Area

We aim to give your child the best possible start in life

F

laxton Nursery was opened in 1999 by the current owner Jane Corner, a retired teacher. The nursery is not in a busy urban area or on an industrial estate, but on the grounds of Draft Farm, which was once a working farm. Situated in the picturesque, rural village of Flaxton, on the eastern outskirts of York and approximately a mile from the A64, it is easily accessed from a wide area. A small nursery registered for 30 children, aged from 3 months to 5 years, with both North Yorkshire County Council and OFSTED and therefore have Early Years funding available for 2,3 and 4 year olds. There are eight qualified staff employed, including a EYPS and trained SENDco on site.

The nursery was purposely designed to give children the opportunity to play in and explore, both inside and outside space in a safe and stimulating environment which all fits perfectly with the Forest School ethos.

Jane says, “After being open for several years we have decided to develop our existing large outside area which already has vast open spaces, a woodland and ecology pond, to further develop the children’s physical and environmental learning skills taking the lead from the Forest School ethos.

Nursery manager Jeanette Gray said “It’s a joy to see the children learn about the world around them in such a lovely educational environment”

Our Preschool teacher has experience of Forest school training and the children have visited Howsham Mill for Forest School sessions.” The new area provides exciting new opportunities for the

Top Tips from a dental professional

NON-SURGICAL FACIAL REJUVENATION Do you ever look in the mirror and wish you had fewer lines and wrinkles. Do you wish your complexion was more luminous and even?

by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)

Here at Howardian Dental Practice Christine Parker, a qualified dental surgeon, has undergone the necessary training and has several years’ experience, in wrinkle reduction, dermal fillers and chemical peels. These can be used together or as individual treatments to subtly enhance your features. As an introductory treatment the facial peels are a real skin booster encouraging increased cell turnover and act at a deeper level than regular facials. We call these our ‘Red Carpet Ready’ peels as they not only make your skin feel softer, they also allow the skin to develop a real glow which is maximised after 3-4 days. They are perfect to be used a week or so before that special event. A course of 6, over 6 months, gives really lasting results.

For in little more than a year John Scoble’s free ukulele classes has grown from five to 50 novices, many in their eighties and nineties, wanting to learn how to play. “Not in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that so many people would want to learn a musical instrument and show such enthusiasm It has been wonderful to help bring so many people together to have some fun,” said John, of The Rise, Thornton Dale. Young or old and of any ability, golf is a great sport which mixes fresh air and exercise with an opportunity to socialise and have fun. Mark Rogers, Head Professional at the Club, says “It doesn’t matter if you’ve never played golf before or haven’t picked up a club since your school days or an almost-forgotten holiday, the intention is to make sure everyone enjoys themselves. And there’s evidence that golf is good for you too! As well as burning calories, it is proven that golfers live five years longer than the rest of the population’’.

GARDENING

2015 – BACK TO THE FUTURE IN THE GARDEN! By Jonathan Wild - Gardener, Prophet and recycler of old taps.

The start of the growing season and now is as good a time as any to reflect on what direction I think this country’s £9 billion gardening industry will take this year. The recession in recent years has undoubtedly had a major influence on how we use our gardens, what we spend on them and, indeed, how we view them as part of our daily lives. An obvious reaction to all this austerity has been the surge in popularity of the grow your own movement which fits in nicely with the general theme of house owners wanting to produce their own delicious food, and encouraging children to put down

mobile devices and get outside to commune with nature. There has been a significant shift towards more natural, ecologically sound garden layouts utilising native trees and plants. DIY meadows continue to increase in popularity and, with the ready availability of wildflower turf preplanted with the right combination of plants for your garden, a lot of the guess work is eliminated and you can be guaranteed a buzzing hive of activity in just a few short weeks! Our new found obsession with all things wild and wonderful will continue to gather momentum, and rare, difficult plants will be

replaced with more simple and old fashioned flowers reminiscent of our childhood. Natural stone will continue to be the hard landscaping material of choice. Recycling appropriate materials, be they industrial artefacts or paving from reclamation yards, is set to rise in popularity and as long as someone has the vision to find the appropriate garden use for, let’s say, an old tap, then it’s a win, win situation for everyone!

MOTORING - ROAD TEST VOLKSWAGEN PASSAT

By Kit Johnson. Car as tested Volkswagen Passat SE TDI 2.0 150PS. £24,435 RRP

The Passat has always been considered a cut above the midrange saloons. Yet, despite this, in the UK it is consistently outsold by rivals such as the Vauxhall Insignia, so it’s easy to forget what a global success story the car truly is. Since its launch in 1973 a staggering 22 million cars have been sold and each year it sells more than the entire output of Audi or BMW. The eighth generation of the Passat has just gone on sale and it is only going to enhance that commercial success. VW is a firm believer in evolutionary styling and this is born out in the new car which is clearly a descendant of the old model but has the current corporate VW snout with frowning ellipsoid headlights and a wide grill. Inside, the Passat has adopted the “virtual” instrument binnacle from the Audi TT but with less success as the graphics look overly fussy.

In an all diesel engine line up, the bottom of the range is a 1.6 with 118bhp, then a 2.0l with uprated outputs of 148bhp or 187bhp and, finally, a ripsnorting biturbo version of the 2.0l kicking out a remarkable 237bhp. I tried the 148bhp version which delivers respectable performance – 8.7 seconds to 62mph and a top speed of 137mph. It is also very refined, although you’ll struggle to achieve the claimed 69mpg economy figure. At motorway speeds it is almost eerily silent and the ride is close to perfect; there is nothing that even a potholed city street can throw at it that isn’t soaked up with ease. The appeal of the Passat has always been that it does everything well. This is not a car you yearn for and it will not attract covetous glances from your neighbours, but its business-like air and faultless quality will provide years of happy motoring, together with the satisfaction of knowing that you bought a better car than the rest of the crowd.

MALTON AND NORTON TIDY GROUP

M

alton and Norton Tidy Group is one of several community groups in Ryedale that takes an active role in the local community by promoting civic pride and helping to maintain a high quality, clean and sustainable environment. The Tidy Group was formed in 2009 off the back of the work of the Malton Town Ambassador. A number of local residents contacted the Ambassador about litter problems. An informal group was formed and has met on a monthly basis ever since – Malton one month, Norton the next. Work is carried out with the support of Streetscene of Ryedale District Council who provide litter pickers, bags and hi-vis vests, and take away the litter that has been collected. The Group tends to tackle the roadside verges and areas away from the town centre – where much of the litter comes from passing traffic. Areas that are regularly tackled include Broughton Road, York Road, Scarborough Road and Beverley Road. It is believed that a great

difference is being made to the environment of the towns but it is a problem that does not appear to be going away – in 2014 the Group collected 271 bags of litter. As well as litter picking, the Group has carried out a number of community gardening tasks – maintaining flower beds in St Nicholas Street car park, clearance work in the riverside picnic area, improvement work on the flower beds outside the railway station, and planting up and maintaining town entrance signs in Langton Road, Beverley Road, Castle Howard Road, Broughton Road and at the Old Malton A64 roundabout. The monthly meets are regularly attended by 10-12 people and a lot is achieved – it is usual for more than 20 bags of litter to be collected. But for a population of around 12,000 the community involvement is incredibly low. However, it is known that, from comments from acquaintances and people passing by, the Group’s efforts are appreciated and that other individuals do their own bits of work – even if it is only picking up the odd can or

bottle that has been dropped in the street. Volunteering, in its many forms, is incredibly rewarding. Volunteers are often the glue that holds a community together. Volunteering allows you to connect to your community and make it a better place whilst it can also help you gain confidence, meet people, gain new skills and experiences, and improve your general health and wellbeing. Malton and Norton Tidy Group can always do with another pair of hands – if you would like to get involved the monthly meet up is the first Sunday of the month - look up the details in the What’s On section of this Handy Mag or Facebook ‘Malton and Norton Tidy Up Group’. If you live in another area of Ryedale and want to get involved with tackling litter issues (either with a community group that already exists or to do your own thing) please contact Streetscene at Ryedale District Council - telephone: 01653 600666 or email: streetscene@ryedale.gov.uk.

RYEDALE FESTIVAL LAUCH CONCERT 10 APRIL 2015 Launch Concert

At St Peter’s Church, Norton, ‘Endymion’ will launch the Ryedale Festival in style with a performance of three very different works. In contrast, Brahms’ Clarinet Trio is an intimate, late work, full of poignant melodies. Finally, Endymion’s world-class players will show their virtuosity and passion in the big-hearted, exuberant and often witty Sextet by the Hungarian composer, Erno Dohnányi. After the concert, Artistic Director Christopher Glynn, will introduce the programme for the forthcoming festival 17 July-2 August and the 2015 Brochures will be distributed.
