W

elcome to the March edition. Like us, you are probably heaving a sigh of relief that March is here, which means…springtime! Following the gales, rain and more gales of winter, spring can’t come soon enough. March is a busy month: Mother’s Day falls on the Sunday 6th, and Easter arrives on Good Friday 25th March, making it an early start to the traditional holiday season. Here in the Handy Mag office, we just love Easter. It’s such a special time as nature starts to really wake up, and the days begin to get noticeably lighter. There are lambs in the fields and daffodils brighten up the roadsides and gardens. I can walk the dogs in daylight although dark mornings have never bothered them – they’re always ready for a walk!

So aside from chocolate Easter Eggs, there are lots of Easter events taking place in Ryedale, so check out our events pages starting on page 34. March also features Apprenticeship Week from 14th to 18th March. While many young people choose to study A Levels and degrees, this is not the only route to gaining satisfying employment. For more information, see Derwent Training’s details on page 31. As part of our commitment to supporting Ryedale’s businesses, we’ve teamed up with Vale Radio this spring, so we can work together to help promote local companies. See page 22 for details. And as the new season approaches, as Ryedale’s Community Voice, don’t forget we list charitable and voluntary events for free! Congratulations to Mr Swiers of Thornton le Dale, our January competition winner.

TAKEOVER BY MARY MAHON

Whilst 2016 remains fairly fresh and still ripe with opportunities to come, many are possibly still grasping onto the hope that ‘this is my year’. I began to wonder whether this truly was our finest year as the human race. Going back a few decades, when thinking of the far-flung future, we dreamt of hover boards, self-driving cars and artificial intelligence that took over our mundane chores. Just watch Back To The Future: II and you’ll understand how crazy our expired dreams were. So how far have we actually come? Instead of these inspiring inventions that change life as we know it, it seems we are in the age of electrification. Whilst this sounds exciting, what it really means is that we’ve pumped electricity through the veins of old inventions and called them new: books, cars, cigarettes, maps. Although there are obvious benefits to this, health-wise, economically, environmentally and so on, it doesn’t change the fact that reality is massively out of sync with expectation. Maybe we’re not quite in the same boat as we were during the industrial revolution, believing that “everything that can be invented has been invented!”, causing us to enhance old inventions, but we do seem to be in the mind-set of ‘everything that has been invented is essential’. Which to some extent, is true... When the floods hit York a couple of months back, we saw a glimpse into how dependent we really are. Unfortunately, some places lost electricity, and in doing so lost their means of contact, gaining information or withdrawing money to buy essentials. It felt like a post-apocalyptic world! Of course, this was only for a few of days. Whilst it highlighted to me how reliant we are on modern technology, I realised it wasn’t necessarily a bad thing. Just because we choose to read an electronic book over a paper book doesn’t signify anything; it doesn’t make us any less or more literate. However, there is a fine line between dependency and obsession that should be recognised... Just as long as you understand how to function without the aid of your phone, you’re probably doing okay. LOCAL ATTRACTION

CAN YOU HELP? Malton Museum opens its doors for 2016 with a family fun weekend on Saturday 30th April and would love to hear from local people with stories, photographs and objects to tell the history of the market town. ‘Malton Goes to Market’ is a three year programme of events and exhibitions, exploring the history of Malton and Norton and its market heritage. Can you share objects, stories, and photographs which could help tell the story of the market towns? The Museum has a particular interest in the past characters of the market - tradesmen and women, who they were, what they created and any interesting stories about them.

Our team of volunteers are busy preparing for the opening weekend while our Learning Team are planning events and activities for the summer, including new hands-on sessions for local groups, and a wonderful resource box for local schools. The Collections Team have been scouring the stores in search of weights, measures, trade tokens and a recently acquired scrapbook has revealed a wealth of adverts. Paper ephemera includes a stunning advertisement for a local boot and shoe business. If you would like to get involved with this project, can offer help at events or perhaps spend some time researching facts from the past from home, the Museum would love to hear from you!

If you have any interesting stories or information from the past or want to find out more about joining the team, please contact Claire Sawdon on enquiries.maltonmuseum@gmail.com or telephone 01653 691262

One sat as Judge and the other stood accused when they suddenly recognised each other across the court room. The heart of the judge was broken when He realised the consequences of the office he held and the accused looked away in shame. The trial was short, the accused was indefensibly guilty and the judge had to pass sentence. The Judge was emotionally torn as he wrestled between his desire to forgive his friend and his responsibility to preside as Judge over the proceedings. Finally he read the sentence: ‘On finding the accused guilty I have no alternative but to apply the maximum fine of £1,000,000 for the crime committed.’ Devastated, the accused crumpled and sobbed knowing he had no way of paying and would eventually be given a prison sentence. The Judge could bear it no longer and left the court room went to his chamber and removed his wig and gown. He quickly reached for his briefcase and went to find his friend. Just before they led him away, the Judge caught his arm and asked for a moment with his friend. He opened his briefcase, took out his cheque book and pen and wrote a cheque for £1,000,000 and offered it to his friend. Stunned for a moment by this gesture of kindness he was hesitant in accepting the cheque his mind flooded with all the reasons why he didn’t deserve it and shouldn’t take it. His friend, now not the Judge, smiled and said, ‘It’s all I have but please accept it as a gift.’! What would you do? On Good Friday we remember a similar transaction. Jesus suffered once for the things we do wrong, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God. Why do we call it Good? It is because the Judge became the friend and paid the price so we can go free.

LOCAL CHARITY

Supporting local people with mental health issues Thursdays are a day for enjoying a massage, with sessions held from 10am to 1pm. Those wanting a relaxing massage session will need to make an appointment and a small charge applies. Friday afternoons is games time, so lots of fun takes place at this weekly event. The IT suite is available for anyone to use during the centre’s opening hours, and there’s a social group that meets every week to go to the cinema, local events quizzes and sometimes meals out.

N

ext Steps Mental Health Resource Centre in Church Street, Norton supports people with mental health issues – including isolation and loneliness - by providing dropin sessions, café and activities along with outreach groups in the market towns of Kirkbymoorside and Pickering. Next Steps are a user-led organisation offering a friendly non-judgemental welcome and work closely with GPs and the community mental health teams to ensure people who are affected by mental health issues are supported.

The outreach work in Pickering includes activities from 9am to 1pm on Thursdays at the WRVS Centre in Hungate. The day includes Men in Sheds group, café, iPad training, cooking, crafts and general support. In Kirkbymoorside, Next Step activities will be held in the Library every Friday from 10am to 12.15pm. Leisa concluded: “Our ultimate aim is to develop self-confidence for members and volunteers, improve work prospects and offer guidance as to access to statutory services. We also help support positive family relationships, and help prevent isolation and loneliness.”

Leisa Burniston, manager of Next Steps, said “All our groups are here to help people with mental health issues. We have volunteer opportunities for all three venues if anyone would like to support our work.” The Resource Centre in Norton is open 8am to 3pm, Monday to Friday. The café, which is run by volunteers, provides hot food and drinks, tasty snacks, and their vegetables are home grown from the Next Steps allotment. On Tuesdays, there’s an art group held from 10am to 12.30pm, which includes free entry for most attendees.

An award-winning care service now in Ryedale

T

here is a new service now available in Ryedale that’s designed to help older people remain independent in their own homes. Home Instead Senior Care has been operating a quality service in York since 2009 and last year won the “Small Business of the Year” accolade from the York Press. Managing Director Luke Norbury is now opening an office in Malton in order to be able to offer the same standard of service to people in Malton, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Helmsley as well as all the villages in between. The service is intended to be flexible and is companionship

based, so clients have a regular CAREGiver who is matched with them and is able to help with a broad range of everyday tasks while providing companionship and support. These tasks could include anything from assistance with showering to shopping or housework. All visits last at least 2 hours and are scheduled at a time to suit you, so there’s no waiting, wondering when the CAREGiver will arrive. Home Instead invests in finding and training the right kind of people who share the company ethos and everything they do has to pass “the Mum Test”. In other words, “would this be something I would want for my own mum?” This approach has served the

company well and they have been independently rated as number 1 for quality in care for older people by LaingBuisson (a healthcare market intelligence expert). The service Home Instead provides is available throughout Ryedale and after an initial conversation over the phone, one of the team will visit prospective clients to chat in more detail about how Home Instead might be able to help. You can visit their website www.homeinstead.co.uk/ york or call Daphne on 01653 272272 to find out more.

R

yedale Youth Theatre (Registered Charitable Trust No. 1053362) in association with Kirkham Henry Performing Arts Community Interest Company is very proud to celebrate it’s 25th Anniversary this year and will present ‘SINGIN’ IN THE RAIN’ at The Milton Rooms, Malton on the 6th to 9th April, 2016. RYT encourages and instructs young people age 8-18 in all aspects of the Performing Arts. The Director/Choreographer Angela Kirkham works voluntarily and tirelessly and along with Choral Master Martin Dixon and choreographer Ali Kirkham and fellow Creatives they make sure that each year’s show is seamless and totally professional. Meanwhile behind the scenes a dedicated team of volunteers have contributed massive amounts of time and effort to ensure the success of the annual Easter productions over the years. In October 2014 Ryedale Youth Theatre received The Duke of York Community Initiative Award and their Director Angela Kirkham was nominated for the Outstanding Leadership award. In 2015 Chairman Barbara Wood and Secretary Barbara Murray were recognised for 25 years of Voluntary Service by being presented with The Volunteer of the Year Award, at The Pride of Malton and Norton Awards, whilst 17 year old Hannah Richardson, who took the leading role of Eva Peron in RYT’s production of ‘Evita’ was jointly awarded the ‘Bright Young Star’ Award It is quite extraordinary that there is such a wealth of young talent in our local communities and for the past 25 years Ryedale Youth Theatre has been blessed with a very strong and focused ‘All Singing; All Dancing; All Acting Cast, many of whom have gone on to performing professionally on the stage, and all those members past and present have to be thanked and congratulated for their hardwork, commitment and dedication.

Music from around the globe performed by the brilliant Kosmos Ensemble – a group that is re-defining classical and world music. Sophisticated jazz glides magically into wild folk fiddling, emotive Jewish music into hot-blooded tango, Arabic and Turkish improvisation into Greek melodies. As described by Richard Morrison, chief music critic of e Times: ‘telepathic rapport, dazzling virtuosity, serious scholarship, intellectual curiosity and impeccable musicianship. I defy you not to be mesmerised.’ ey make extensive use of their own arrangements, alongside vibrant new compositions, entrancing dance rhythms, soulful improvisation and passion delivered with panache and virtuoso technique.

Retorica was formed by two superb violinists and communicators, who take their name from the feminine form of the Italian word meaning ‘artful persuasion.’ eir uniqueness lies in the quality of the two players as they perform in the rare and expressive formation of a violin duo, with its largely unexplored wealth and quality of repertoire. eir programme includes works by Telemann, Mozart, JS Bach, David Matthews, Prokofiev and Handel. ‘Superbly responsive playing...faultless technique and unfailing insight' – Gramophone ‘ey are immensely communicative, both in spoken introductions and in their unfailingly musical playing, and their repertoire covers a huge range of styles. If people ever think music for two violins might be a bit dull, Retorica will totally change their minds!’ – John McCabe

THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA

FREE OF CHARGE BOOKINGS STILL BEING TAKEN The Lottery funded camera is available locally to help you find out where heat is escaping from your home - so helping save money and fuel. It could be useful if you are thinking about making improvements to wall and roof insulation. KMEG volunteers have been using the camera in the Kirkbymoorside area since 2012, from late autumn through the winter months into early spring. The best weather conditions are cloudy, dry and cold! The camera picks up heat, rather than light like a normal camera. It’s surprising how much heat can be lost around windows, doors and skirting boards, up the chimney of an unused fireplace, as well as through poorly insulated roofs and walls.

Building on a successful year On Boxing Day last year, the phone rang at Bear Builders. One of our recent customers was calling to say that after 36 hours of solid rain her recently repaired roof had passed the ultimate test. Clearly delighted with the work we had done she said she just had to call to say a huge ‘thank you’. The customer had suffered with her leaking roof for some time (despite previous repairs by other builders). This particular roof repair was a complex job where part of the roof was replaced and part of the roof was repaired. We worked very hard to make sure that the job was completed to a high standard.

By far, the most enjoyable experience since we started trading in February 2014 has been engaging with the many different customers and meeting their needs in a range of many different projects.

job right and they like how we go the extra mile.

We are passionate about helping customers achieve their end goal and will try to help them do that in a way which makes the experience as easy and enjoyable as possible. We want to give our customers a better experience.

At our launch, there were three people involved in this family business and this has now grown to five. Our core team is supported by our brilliant local contractors and suppliers who share our business aims and values. We are proud to be part of a growing business and we are delighted to play our part in sustaining the local economy.

This snapshot of our work captures what we at Bear Builders strive to achieve. Simply good quality workmanship and strong customer service.

Based in Leavening, in the heart of Ryedale we have worked on projects from Selby to Scarborough and Harrogate to Hull and we are pleased to say that much of our business over the past two years has come through recommendation and word of mouth; we feel that this is the highest endorsement of our work.

One exciting result of our growth is that we are able to tackle better than ever before, those larger contracts such as new builds (including small developments), full extensions and commercial projects while still meeting the needs of those customers who simply need a window fitting or a wall plastering.

In February this year, 2016, Bear Builders will look back over their first two years of trading with pride and optimism. Our business aim now is the same as it was then... to give our customers a better and refreshingly different experience from a builder.

We have learned over the past two years that our customers appreciate our open and transparent approach and our easy style of customer service. Our customers tell us that they like our simple ‘no hidden extra’s’ way of providing quotes. They like our focus on getting the

Despite this, recent changes to the intestacy rules (determining who the property and estate passes to when someone dies without a valid Will) has strengthened the position for married couples and those in civil partnerships but not for unmarried couples. Unmarried couples will have no automatic entitlement to their deceased partner’s assets and their estate will pass automatically to their closest relatives, often either their children or their siblings. This could result in your lifelong partner being left with nothing. The concept of ‘common law’ spouse does not exist and is not one which is recognised in law. John Staniland, Solicitor at Mitchells says “Dealing with the loss of a loved one is distressing enough without having to face the prospect of losing your home and your financial security. We strongly recommend every adult to make a Will but it is particularly important for cohabiting couples. Whilst a surviving partner may in certain circumstances have the right to make a claim against the deceased’s estate this could involve lengthy court proceedings with no guarantee of success”. WHEN IS A £1 MILLION IHT LIMIT NOT A £1 MILLION IHT LIMIT?

Julie Wilson explains why the new £1 million Inheritance Tax limit is a red herring. So let’s take a look at the detail. The actual limit is still £325,000. And remains so until 2021. There’s a new ‘main residence nil rate band’ – an additional £175,000 – which comes fully into effect from 2021. I must admit I did grapple a bit with this ‘main residence nil rate band’ nonsense. Why not just increase the limit to £500,000 and be done with it. Then I twigged. It’s all smoke and mirrors. The £325,000 exemption can be used more than once. You give £325,000 away. You survive for 7 years. You get another £325,000. You give it away. You survive for 7 years, You get another £325,000 and so on. But this new ‘main residence nil rate band’ is claimed on death. A ‘once in a lifetime opportunity’. (Unless you can think of a way of dying more than once.) But it gets even sneakier.

O

ur mates Dave and George had little choice but to introduce a £1 million Inheritance Tax limit. They’ve been banging on about it since at least 2008. So it was no great surprise that the ‘major changes to Inheritance Tax’ included in the Autumn budget statement promised us the £1 million. Only on close inspection, it didn’t.

If house prices continue to rise as they have done, the new allowance will have been swallowed up by house price increases by 2021. Which means the taxable proportion remains exactly the same.

Firstly, the £1 million limit is per couple. So that’s £500,000 each. Well that’s not a million then is it? So single and divorced people only get half of what was promised.

An Easter Message From

Archbishop Sentamu F

rom 1 December 2015 to 22 May 2016, I am undertaking a Pilgrimage of Prayer, Witness and Blessing – from the coast, over moor and dale, along highways and byways, through both rural and urban communities and across an area which spans the Humber to the Tees and the A1 to the coast. As you read this I have journeyed through Whitby, Guisborough, Middlesbrough, Stokesley, Mowbray, Northern Ryedale, Bridlington, Scarborough, Harthill, North Holderness, Howden, Hull West, Beverley, and central Hull! My pedometer tells me that I am averaging around 7 miles per day – some days have been longer, and the Pilgrimage continues up to Trinity Sunday – 22 May, 2016, finishing at York Minster. To follow and share in the journey, please visit: http://pilgrimage. archbishopofyork.org My prayers have led me to this pilgrimage. I want to meet as many people as I can, to walk with them

and to pray with them. I want to encourage everyone who I meet to follow Christ, and bless what God is doing. St Paulinus, St Aidan, St Cuthbert and St Hilda of Whitby in their time shared the good news of Jesus Christ with the people of the North. Praying for those who come to know Christ is a great privilege and a joy. In many ways – it feels like I am returning to my roots! I’m a follower of Jesus Christ. That

is what I am trying to do: Follow wherever he leads. Throughout my pilgrimage and especially as you prepare for Easter, I would like to encourage you to try praying, to be open to encountering Jesus Christ, for a mighty outpouring of the Holy Spirit, and receive the gift of the joy promised by Jesus Christ – and be thankful. As you celebrate Easter day, and enjoy your Fairtrade Easter Eggs, I pray that you will know God very close at hand, and that He will give you a sense of hope for all that you are and all that you can be. I pray that God will give you the courage to have dreams that transform not only your lives, but the lives of all those you meet, for the better. Pray with me, and join me on the road! Archbishop Sentamu For opportunities to walk with the Archbishop, to pray with him and to follow and share in his journey, please visit: http://pilgrimage. archbishopofyork.org

Milton Rooms scoops first tour date for the queen of folk music

T

he legendary folk singer and musician Maddy Prior will kick off her 2016 UK tour at Malton’s Milton Rooms on 16th March.

Maddy rose from the folk circuit to international success as the lead singer of Steeleye Span with their unique fusion of folk and rock in the seventies. In her varied career since then she has become one of the most enduring, influential and respected artists in British music. “This is a big coup for Malton to attract such an artist as Maddy and we are sure it will be a great night out for all her fans,” said Brenda Stott, a programme organiser at the Milton Rooms. Maddy has continued to explore different musical avenues over the years both as a soloist and band member. Together with new musical partners Giles Lewin (who plays with Maddy in the Carnival Band) and young accordion player Hannah James, Maddy will be performing music from across the British Isles

and as far away as Eastern Europe all delivered in her own unique style. Tickets are now on sale at the Milton Rooms box office or by telephone 01653 696240, priced £16 (£12 concessions).

StoneClenz Before

Before

After

Whether it’s a travertine floor, block paved drive, or stone wall, Stoneclenz offer a full restoration process. Their fully trained and qualified team deliver the most impressive results possible, bringing new life back into your surfaces. Inside your home - Are your stone, tiled or synthetic floors looking dirty, tired or worn out ? You may have tried to clean your floors yourself and have been disappointed with the results, and now feel that you have no alternative but to renew them. A bit drastic and probably very expensive ! All floors lose their original lustre over a period of time. The years of foot traffic can fade what should be the centrepiece to your room. Stonclenz’s specialised cleaning equipment removes the dirt, grime and bacteria which defaces your flooring, leaving your floors clean and safe. Once cleaned they can seal, or hone and polish your floor to a beautiful shine. Outide your home - Their steam-based stone cleaning system removes moss, algae, fungi and other biological matter, revealing the often surprising beauty and colour of your stonework and masonry, paths and driveways, long hidden under many years of air-borne pollution.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Renaissance

By The Pastoral Poet

BRIGHT IDEAS ARE OUR BUSINESS

Fitting that a new birth’s bleating Warms a sullen sunless day. A catalyst to start anew. A hint to Winter’s overstay. The lichen freckled dry stone walls Have coped with blasts of icy spears. Now a new breath pants its presence. A callow lukewarm imprint nears. A jaunty blackbird, crocus billed, Jangles the tonic sol-fa keys, And catkins gracing the bare boughs, Tremble in the powder puff breeze. The heron spears the freed waters, Wading midst the pan pipe sedges. And stars poached from the milky way, Embellish the blackthorn hedges. The fields are mad with jousting hares; Tilting and rousing latent lusts. A soft rain moistens my dry eyes And rinses my soul’s gathered dusts. Clive Milson

MICROCHIPPING YOUR PET

In England from 6th April 2016 all dogs will need to be microchipped and registered on a microchip database. Microchipping is a permanent means of identification and has many benefits for the owners, principally reuniting them with straying animals. Other reasons for making microchipping compulsory for dogs is to help tackle puppy farming, theft and encourage responsible dog ownership. Microchips are small devices, about the size of a grain of rice that are implanted under the skin on the back of the neck near the shoulder blades. This is done through a sizeable needle in a well restrained animal and is a quick procedure. Once implanted chips are very reliable though owners must remember to update their contact details if they change. For pets travelling abroad via the pet passport scheme microchipping is also compulsory. Other species can also be microchipped for the same reasons and there are countless wonderful tales of pets being reunited with their families after all sorts of adventures. The cost is low – we charge £9.99 +vat for a chip.

Veterinary surgeons, dog wardens and animal welfare organisations have scanners to read the chips and then trace the owner. Occasionally chips migrate from their initial implant position, but there is a standard way of scanning animals where chips that aren’t immediately picked up at the back of the neck which. Rarely the chips fail and a new one can be implanted with records kept of both.

THE SPOTLESS DOG

All horses are required to have a passport these days and in order to have one they must also be microchipped, with newborn foals requiring this by 6 months of age or the 31st December in the year that they are born, whichever is later. As with small pets this can be done when they are very young and are registered on a database.

LOCAL EVENT

MALTON MALE CHOIR TO SING WITH MUCHLOVED SOPRANO LESLEY GARRETT The Malton choir, who are ten years old next year, will join six other northern choirs for the “Men of Steel” concert in Scunthorpe’s prestigious Baths Hall on Saturday 21 May. Organised by Scunthorpe Male Voice Choir, it will feature about 200 male choir singers with Lesley Garret as guest vocalist. In a personal message the soprano said “I know that the Malton choir are relatively young, just ten years old, but I am sure we will be able to make fabulous music together”. Concert organisers said the acclaimed opera and show star would join the combined choirs in two wellknown songs – “Some Enchanted Evening” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone” and also sing in two 20 minute slots of her own during the show. “I send my very best wishes to Malton and the Choir and wish them all the very best for their rehearsals, I can’t wait to sing with them all in just a few months’ time”, she said in an e-mail to choir chairman Tom Todd. “It’s a great honour to be part of this concert”, said Tom. He said the involvement was the result of a long-standing association between the Malton choir’s Gordon Temperton and Scunthorpe MVC. Gordon died last year at 88. “I know he would have loved to be part of this”, Tom said.

GARDEN VIEW Lovely Lilies (and a spot of hard-pruning) By Rachael Leverton

T

he first day of spring this year is officially March 20th. Trees are blossoming and daffodils are in bloom. The garden has woken up from its winter sleep and is full of promise. But promise is not enough. A beautiful garden does not happen by chance. So what are the top jobs for March gardeners? Pruning features large! Hardprune those late flowering shrubs like Buddleia, Leycesteria and Lavateria, but only if the risk of heavy frost is past. Spring-flowering plants such as Forsythia and Winter Honeysuckle should be pruned immediately the flowers fade. If you haven’t already pruned your bush roses, now is the time. Leave about an inch of last year’s growth to encourage bushiness and lots of flowers. Lift congested clumps of snowdrops while they still have leaves showing. Finally, stay on top of the weeds. If you leave them, weeding quickly becomes an insurmountable chore.

YORKSHIRE’S GREEN AND PLEASANT LAND

Are you concerned about these on your doorstep?

If so, come to our energy briefing on 9th March 2016 at 7.00-9.00pm. Middleton and Aislaby Village Hall Near Pickering Tickets (£7 per person) obtainable in advance by phoning 01845 522415

Ok, we’ve dispensed with the hard work, now it’s time to look ahead. I have one word for you...Lilies. I always thought they were tricky to grow, and so they proved, mainly because my garden doubles as a slug sanctuary! Then I had an epiphany. It dawned on me that if I grew them in pots, slug prevention would be easier, plus I didn’t run the risk of slicing through the fat, scaly bulbs or tender shoots with my hoe while enthusiastically weeding my plot. Even better, it means you can grow them even if you only have a balcony. Three bulbs fit nicely into an 8inch pot and five fit into a ten inch pot. I’ve found terracotta pots best because they provide enough weight to prevent these tall plants tipping over. Lilies need an open planting mixture which drains well so I use a mixture of potting compost plus a soil-less multi-purpose compost. Once the buds have formed, feed weekly with dilute tomato food until late summer. Each spring, scrape away a couple of inches of compost and add fresh mixture, then repeat the instructions above. Treated like this your lilies will reward you for three or four years before they need re-potting. 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

LOCAL EVENT

YORKSHIRE CAJUN & ZYDECO FESTIVAL

T

his year’s Festival dates are 18th, 19th & 20th March and will take place in the Milton Rooms.

The Festival has gained a reputation for introducing new or little known talent to the Cajun/Zydeco scene and this year is no exception. Not many will have heard of Kelly & Woolley...yet! Matt Kelly was the fiddle player with the Cajun/Zydeco/Blues band The Lizards and also played with Phil Underwood’s, Ti-Fer. Gary Woolley is better known on the folk scene but both are hugely talented and anxious to do more Cajun! Some of the leading figures of the UK Cajun music scene will be attending. Phil Underwood, brings his new Zydeco line up, Et-toi. Miriam Hogan is back with her Mirikools and also returning again are Bosco Beret and Rough Chowder. Playing on the Friday night, Malton will welcome two influential figures of the cajun scene; John Womack from Scarborough, who fronted cajun band Red Hot Boudan, will be joined by the fiddle of Nick Thomson, a founder member (alongside his brother) of the legendary Buttermountain Boys.Last but not least, closing the Saturday night, is the wonderful Downtown Cajun Band from Holland. Throughout the weekend there will be all the usual dance and music workshops, jam sessions, on-site food, silent auction, merchandise, exhibitions, spot prizes, competitions and raffles. Look out for ArtMosphere, a gallery of Louisiana ‘Crude Art’ who are also new to the festival. Festival goers are encouraged to wear a costume for Saturday’s ‘Mardi Gras’ parade in the Market Place. Tickets are on sale and can be bought via www.yorkshirecajun.com Yorkshire Cajun are a not for profit organisation run by volunteer enthusiasts and this year they are pleased to be supporting Cystic Fibrosis. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 79
