elcome to our March edition.

For the Romans this month was ruled by Mars, the god of war, for when their armies could at last get back to fighting after the winter months. Curiously, the Pentagon seems to agree with this tradition as almost all major US-NATO led military operations since the invasion of Vietnam have begun in the month of March! Thankfully Mars was also the god of agriculture. It is appropriate then that we’re all out looking at our gardens expecting them to burst into life this month. If your garden is in need of some attention, there are lots of places and people who can help in this month’s edition. From garden centres to landscapers and tree surgeons, there really is no excuse for not getting your outdoors off to a great start this spring. My other half will be itching to get out there tidying and raking and digging and cutting. The garden centre will be a big draw and I’m sure some new ‘interesting’ plants will appear in the flower beds when I’m not looking! Everyone seems to be ‘springing’ back to life this month and we’ve squeezed in lots of local events. York Literature Festival has a great line up with the likes of Michael Palin, Mark Gatiss and Sue Perkins with many others. More details are on page 44. In Malton, get your outfits ready for dancing in the streets once again at the annual Cajun and Zydeco Festival on the 18th. Enjoy the coming of spring and let’s hope March ‘comes in like a lion’ and goes ‘out like a lamb’ like it should. Congratulations to Mrs Horsfield from Norton for winning our January competition. Until next time…

LUDICROUS LAWS

Richard Holloway

BY MARY MAHON

America: the land of freedom and prosperity? With every passing day, American politics looks like they are clawing themselves away from Democratic legislation, to alternative Republican ideas. The ‘economic burden’ of Obamacare is being diminished, the right to abortion is being stripped, and there is a much stricter immigration control. Although shocking changes are taking place in America right now, they still have a long way to go before they rival some of the world’s weirdest laws… Some laws are so extraordinary you wouldn’t believe they are true. They just make you smile. Literally. In Milan, legislation requires that citizens must smile at all times - if not, you definitely won’t be smiling when you receive a hefty fine. Similarly, some laws are so odd you question their origin. For example, why in Arizona is it illegal for donkeys to sleep in a bathtub after 7pm, or in Florida, why can’t you pass wind in public after 6pm? Although it’s reassuring that you won’t literally be penalised under these laws, some existing legislation is actually very worrying… The fact that there is no minimum age for marriage in Saudi Arabia meant that in 2008, an 8-year-old girl was denied a divorce against her 58-year-old husband. An ancient 1800s law states that in Arkansas, a husband can beat his wife once a month if deemed necessary, and in India, a man who is in debt can offer up his wife until it is paid off. It balances out however; for each ludicrous law, there are laws of common sense - despite how good the food may taste, it is illegal in Chicago to eat in an establishment which is on fire! – and laws which completely contradict themselves! In Britain, you can’t die in the Houses of Parliament (or I’m sure you’ll face extreme consequences), and from the country that brought us Sumo wrestling, it is illegal to be overweight! In combination, our world has an amalgamation of very strange laws, where if you united them, we would have a very upside-down world! Yet regardless of what our laws dictate, I believe that primarily, our hearts and minds are our true guides. 8 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

80 YEARS AND COUNTING – A LIFETIME OF COLLECTING A special exhibition to celebrate the 80th birthdays of local collectors Sid Woodhams and John Stone

The trustees of the Collection aim to raise money to celebrate their 80th birthdays and the fascinating local history items that they have saved for everyone to enjoy.

John Stone and Sid Woodhams turn 80 years old on 18th and 19th March 2017 respectively. The Woodhams-Stone Collection is planning to celebrate by holding a celebratory exhibition at the former Conservative Club, 32 Market Place, ???? Malton, from 18th to 26th March. The exhibition will showcase the depth and breadth of their collections, which focus on Malton and Norton. It will include objects that have not been on public display before and some old favourites. Sid and John have spent the majority of their 80 years collecting and preserving items and printed material related to the history of the market towns. In 2011 they generously donated these collections to the people of Malton and Norton to become a local history resource.

Chair of the Woodhams-Stone Collection, Di Keal said: “As Sid and John were both born in 1937 we had think that £1937 would be a fantastic target to reach! All the money will be spent on exhibiting the objects and any left over will be used for the continuing care of the collection and future events and open days.” To make a donation go to: http://www.charitychoice.co.uk/ woodhamsstonecollection/appeals/a-lifetime-ofcollecting The Woodhams-Stone Collection is made up of thousands of artefacts from Malton and Norton, including brewery, agricultural, domestic, trade and personal items. Over the last three years the Collection has been sorted, photographed, catalogued and stored. Items from the Collection are currently ‘on tour’ around Ryedale libraries.

ARE YOU CURIOUS? No longer in full-time employment or raising a family? Now’s the time to make the most of life. The University of the Third Age gives you the chance to enjoy the things you have always wanted to do and to make new friends. U3A stands for University of the Third Age; the word University is used in its original meaning of groups of people with common interests. There is no absolute minimum age for joining, and no maximum either and no qualifications are required. For some it has been the opportunity to pursue an interest or develop their knowledge of a particular subject with likeminding people. For others it has been the social contact. The possibilities are endless. The U3A is all voluntary – we learn from one

another and anyone can start an interest group.

Perhaps you’ve had a secret desire to splash a bit of paint on a canvas. Or write a poem. What was it you always said you would like to do? Learn to play bridge? Maybe you would like to study that obscure historical period that has always fascinated you or discuss the English language and all its complexities.

Ryedale U3A has a wide range of interest groups; creative and leisure, which meet regularly. In addition there are theatre trips, visits to gardens and other places of interest as well as a monthly meeting with a specialist lecture. Join in to meet new friends with common interests.

Wherever your interest lies there will be a subject to catch your eye and once caught, believe me, you will be hooked. So, come in, look around and allow yourself to be lured.”

What on earth is U3A?

Pat, a member of the Ryedale U3A Creative Writing Group explains; “Well, if you’re curious enough to find out, then turn the handle and push open the door. Think of the many times you’ve promised yourself that, one day, you were going to have a go at something. Something? Does anything take your fancy?

ot only are Castle Carpets celebrating their first anniversary in Malton this month, they have also been given an award for customer service by Houzz, the online platform for home renovation and design. In fact, Castle Carpets have had lots of positive feedback on their customer service. “It’s important that our customers feel important,” says Sue Harrison, one of the shop’s owners. “We have a vast product knowledge and experience so can tailor our advice to our customer’s needs, both in terms of design and cost.”

Castle Carpets have been supplying bespoke designer floors for more than 40 years and decided to expand into Malton in 2016. Iain Harrison, Sue’s other half, says “We’ve had brilliant support from local people and also from other businesses in the town. Sarah Clark from Interiors at Nine to Eleven has been especially helpful in directing her customers to our showroom for flooring ideas and advice.” From hand-made carpets to safety floors and bespoke runners to Karndean, Castle Carpets cover all aspects at their Malton showroom.

Both Iain and Sue are passionate about their products and can provide the right information to make sure every customer ends up with their perfect floor. For advice and simply hundreds of flooring options, drop into Castle Carpets on Yorkersgate in Malton or call 01653 228497.

LOCAL MEN TO CELEBRATE A DECADE OF SONG

I

t’s nearly ten years since Malton District Male Voice Choir was founded and the group plans to celebrate later this year while inviting new members to join in the fun right now. Founded in 2007 and grouping singers from 20 to 95, the choir wants to expand its repertoire and attract people who like popular music and good company, says Chairman and Founder Tom Todd. “We are a small, compact choir and we would like to stay that way”, says Tom. “Being small works for us. That and our personality are what won praise from Gareth Malone on BBC TV last year and it continues to attract us to a wide range of groups looking for entertainment in small venues”. Tom adds “We still need more members to add breadth to our four part repertoire. Our choir is a choir for men of all ages - with or without singing experience and like most male voice choirs it attracts mainly retirees with spare time for a healthy hobby. But new members of all ages will find a warm welcome and they can just come along and listen if they would like to” The choir performs a programme of Welsh songs at a care home in Pickering on St David’s Day March 1st. Also on the agenda are concerts in Scarborough’s prestigious Queen Street Methodist Church and in Bridlington as well as, hopefully, a special anniversary concert with guest soloists later in the year. The choir marks its tenth year after one of the busiest years in its history. BBC viewers saw it on national TV in November and among other things in 2016 it sang with Lesley Garrett, performed in Sledmere House, took part in a Bridlington choir festival and ended the year with carols in the Talbot Hotel. The choir practises in the Baptist Church Meeting Rooms (next to Yates) most Mondays 7.30-9.30pm. For more details call 01944 758693 or 01653 692362.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

HOW TO HEDGE by Pippa Greenwood

There is nothing better than a living boundary around or within your garden. Hedges can take on many guises – they can look smart or informal, be neat and compact or thicker and sturdier, evergreen or deciduous and, if you want you can even include some hedging with pretty flowers. Now is an ideal time to plant a new hedge. First, prepare the area in the same way you would for any other long-term planting: fork the soil over thoroughly, removing large stones, debris and pernicious weeds. This will eliminate anything that might make establishment tricky or subsequently reduce hedge growth. This preparation also helps to break up any compaction and to aerate the soil, making it a better place for plant roots. If the soil is either very sandy and light or very heavy with clay, then fork in well-rotted garden compost, manure or proprietary compost, as this will help to improve the soil’s texture and its ability to hold moisture and

nutrients to just the right extent. At the same time incorporate a complete fertilizer. A young hedge will not create a perfect barrier for the first few years, so if you anticipate problems with next door’s pets or children breaking through you may initially need to use a less attractive barrier such as galvanized stock fencing. Don’t be tempted to plant right up against an existing fence, as the plants simply won’t grow well. At this time of year, when hedging plants grow very little or not at all, you can create a hedge very effectively using ‘bare-root’ plants, but if you want to plant a hedge at any other time you will need container-grown plants. Small pot-grown conifers, for instance, will have well-established roots and should thrive. If using pot-grown plants, carefully remove each

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE plant from its pot just before planting, having watered them thoroughly first if the compost is dry. The roots should not be too tightly packed in the pot, but if they are, tease them out firmly before planting. If you’re using bare-root plants, make sure that you’re ready to plant them as soon as they are delivered and that the soil is also ready and waiting. It is essential to space the plants correctly to achieve the desired effect, and to make sure that you plant them properly if they are to get off to a good start and establish well. Once out of the pot, position the plant in the prepared soil, making sure that it is at the same depth as it was in the pot. If you’re using bare-root plants then make sure that only the roots are beneath the soil. If planted too deeply the plants will suffer and may even die; if planted too shallowly they will be more prone to drying out. Firm the soil around each so that it is in good contact with the roots. Hedging plants generally need a spacing of about 30-45cm. For a much thicker or denser hedge it is often worth planting them 45cm apart, but using two parallel rows of plants, positioned so that the planting is staggered like bricks in a wall. Once the whole hedge is planted, water the soil thoroughly to help settle the soil around the roots and so allow the plants

to establish. On windy sites or with larger plants it may be worth using small, temporary stakes such as bamboo canes to stabilise the plants. For the hedge to grow well, it is essential that you keep it well watered, especially during dry or windy weather. The first 18 months is the most vital period. Some great hedging plants: • Yew - perfect for a formal, super-smart evergreen hedge. • Thuja - makes a stunning conifer hedge for year round colour, and is not too inclined to be rampant! • Beech - a deciduous plant that gives a good effect for much of the year because the gingery brown autumn leaves often last well. Both purple and green-leafed forms. • Hornbeam - similar to beech but with few leaves held over winter and more prone to mildew. Great as a neatly clipped hedge. • Cypress – the ‘Leyland Cypress’ is notorious, but kept well clipped and cut back regularly this does actually make a great hedge. • Pyracantha - a very spiny evergreen plant excellent for keeping out unwelcome visitors, with pretty creamy-white flowers and red-orange or yellow berries. • Privet - the classic town hedge, which looks great

Which do you want first, the good news or the bad news?’

1000’s metres of curtain and upholstery fabrics at very affordable prices

by The Revd Peter C Robinson Vicar of Malton & Old Malton

How would you respond if asked this question? As I watch or listen to the news, the underlying question behind much reporting seems to be, ‘Which do you want first, the bad news or the bad news?’ Reports of conflict and war are prominent, as is news of injustice, poverty and need. Crime is clearly newsworthy, especially if committed by a public figure or celebrity. Keeping up with the news can be a depressing pastime causing concern about the future. This begs the question as to whether we are right to allow ourselves to fall into pessimism, even despair.

Although there is much to be concerned about in our day, I suggest that we can too easily gain an unbalanced perspective of our world. In reality, there is much to celebrate and be thankful for. In our communities there are many acts of kindness, generosity and selfless commitment to others taking place every day. This is true of those working in our schools, hospitals, emergency services and in many places of work. But this goodness is not simply evident through employment. There are those who are quietly giving of themselves day by day to friend, neighbour and stranger. I suspect that there a similar goodness in many a land, especially in those places and situations which are the focus of bad news. A good remedy to feelings of pessimism about the future is to choose to go without the news for a week and to devote time to intentionally looking for acts of kindness. There’s a lot of it about and it has its origin in God who is the source of all love and goodness. Better still is to devote time every week to seeking and thanking him.

Strong Wind

By The Pastoral Poet With the sound of an inrushing sea, The wind roars through the tree tops. None doubt its rebellious mood. Trees; Bending to its bidding; The cleansing and the ridding Of unwanted dead wood. Moving in triple time, Wavelets waltz across the lake In a rhythmical rise and fall. A bird venturing from shelter, Is caught up in a helter-skelter, And becomes a dishevelled feathered ball. An unlatched gate swings open and shut, Creaking on rusted hinges. Rank grasses rustle in the lea, Where sheep are scattered dots, Resembling stranded yachts On a turbulent sea. Clive Milson

“Holly and her team made my daughter Betsy’s 4th birthday party so special. She had very specific princess and knights requirements and Holly went out of her way to meet these! We had almost 40 2-5 year olds at the party and they kept them engaged and involved in the games for an hour and a half. They made Betsy feel like a very important princess for the whole time!” Bethan

WHAT’S ON: Local events in and around Ryedale. FRIENDS OF MALTON MUSEUM 15 MARCH Lecture - “You dont look well” by Linda McCarthy

A look at public health in the Victorian era, and the treatments given, which in general were incredibly primitive and impacted on both rich and poor. Public health and medical science have come a long way and the talk covers some of the most influential such as Dr. John Snow, born in York, Louis Pasteur and Florence Nightingale. The talk looks at some of the causes of a nation’s ill health resulting from unsanitary conditions at home and where people lived and the nature of people’s

work, examples of how medical treatment could go horribly wrong and how the quacks cashed in on a nation consumed by the fear of getting ill. We also look at some commercially produced panaceas which claimed to cure everything from baldness to impotence. The talk finishes with a whistle-stop tour through the timeline of the NHS and how we really should be grateful for what we have - the good old days weren’t always the best. 7.30pm at The Library, East Wing, Malton School, Middlecave Road, Malton. Visitors are welcome, admission £3. Friends of the Museum - free of charge.

TIME TO GO SUGAR FREE? What with Dry January and now Sugar Free February it seems as though we are under constant pressure to dramatically alter our diets with a free guilt trip built in when we fail. Good health, oral or otherwise is not about denial it is about balance. If you are very overweight or gradually increasing in girth then abruptly reducing your food to starvation rations will undoubtedly help you to lose weight, sadly when you start to eat again your body will lay down fat in case you starve yourself again.

Email: feetuk@hotmail.co.uk 12 Newbiggin, Malton, YO17 7JF

As a dentist its very annoying when it is recommended to eat ‘little and often’ this may keep your metabolism burning however it can have a drastic effect on your teeth. Each time we take in food or drink our teeth are under attack for about 90 minutes, so most dentist will recommend 3 meals with 1 snack per day. Any drinks in between should be sugar free and have a neutral pH.

Need help with your Computer?

Over the years there have been a variety of craze diets which have thankfully fallen out of favour, anyone remember the PLJ diet ? Your dentist will as it caused serious dental problems. I think there a few similarly acidic or highly coloured juice diets still around and these have the same potential to cause tooth decay and dental erosion.

By restricting how often you eat, unless you increase your portion sizes significantly you should lose weight without causing damage to your teeth, combine this with a bit more exercise and the weight should gradually reduce. So you don’t need to cut sugar out completely unless you really want to, you just need to keep it for mealtimes! Golden anniversary brings award for Ryedale historian

ifty years after both the opening of Pickering’s Beck Isle Museum and the formation of Ryedale Lions Club, the Lions have honoured one of the Museum’s founding fathers.

preciation. “As we mark 50 years of the Ryedale Lions it is entirely fitting that this award goes to somebody who has also given 50 years of outstanding community service to Ryedale,” said Lions President, David Warin.

Gordon Clitheroe was a leading figure in establishing the museum in 1967 to preserve and display the history of Pickering, where he has grown up. He has put untold hours into Beck Isle’s promotion and development as Chairman, Curator, and now Trustee of the museum. The collection has grown to some 60,000 objects and catalogues Pickering’s rich history as a rural market town.

Among his many achievements, Gordon rescued hundreds of photographs and photographic equipment from the collection of Sydney Smith which were destined for the tip. They now hold pride of place in Beck Isle Museum as an internationally acclaimed historic record of the area. The photographs have also featured in five history books written by Gordon.

Ryedale Lions awarded Gordon the club’s annual Certificate of Ap-

Giving the unemployed and the young confidence to succeed in Ryedale by Malcolm Jones, The Jones Partnership Accountants & Business Advisors

attention of Walking With The Wounded, the veterans charity and we now work for them on a voluntary basis throughout the north of England. Those lacking what’s commonly referred to as “soft skills” are having a “hard time”. Yet the remedies are readily available. We provide help to all age groups with writing CV’s and interview technique, arrange visits to companies so that they get to experience of the “world of Work”. As a result, the people we assist see their confidence grow and become “job ready”. Much is made of the lack of job opportunities among all age groups in Ryedale, especially amongst the young. Despite vast sums of public expenditure committed to attacking the problem of unemployment, securing a job continues to be a major concern for a number of people. As a nation, we quite rightly place great emphasis on universal education and yet issues concerning un-employment still exist. A national un-employment rate of 5% is a mere statistic to those in work. For the jobless it represents a real problem that effects 100% of their lives. To have a fully functioning society we all have a responsibility to do what we can to find a productive use for the talented and jobless who are marginalized within our communities. What’s to be done? Quite simply, we must stop turning our backs, blaming governments and identify ways in which every employer, teacher and parent can help the unemployed. We must be ambitious and recognize that real opportunities exist. Small steps taken by each of us can lead to real improvements for those out of work.

Through the global charity “Young Enterprise” and the recently established “Enterprise Adviser Network”, I visit local schools and share my experience with the students. At Lady Lumleys School, a Limited Company was formed by the students, each of whom takes on the duties of a Company Board member covering finance, product design, marketing, research etc. The students have learned so much about the world of business which they now recognize bears no relation to how business is often portrayed on the TV shows such as The Apprentice or Dragon’s Den. They have produced an award-winning product and attended sales exhibitions. Their knowledge of the world of work and confidence has grown. They proudly informed me that their experience helped them at interviews for work and for a university places. These enterprising students have discovered through hard work that that they can improve their chances of success. The whole process cost absolutely nothing apart from a few hours work throughout the school term. I challenge all of us in Ryedale to examine how we can help others.

Through our commitment to “do what we can” our company has for the last 8 years worked with ex-servicemen and women to help them into employment or into self-employment. Many of these veterans have suffered unimaginable physical and mental injuries and yet they demonstrate a determination to re-build their lives outside the armed forces. Unable to find employment, the majority have started-up their own business with our support. They Annual Malcolm Accounts · Management Accounts · Bookkeepi have not lacked skills or a desire to succeed. KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP WHEN DID IT START?

Founded in 2005 by Petra Slangen, KMEG began by distributing low-energy light bulbs to startled passers-by in the town. This was followed by a stall at the Christmas Fair selling energy-saving gadgets, some of which might look quite primitive now.

WHAT DOES IT DO?

Over the years the group has hosted talks and films on Energy and Climate Change. An Environment Week was organised at the Primary School. Cotton shopping bags were distributed around the town to discourage the use of plastic. Visitors at Ryedale Show were able to make their own cloth Morsbags and bird boxes. A Shopping Guide (available in town and on KMEG’s website) is produced regularly, to encourage people to support local shops. Give or Take Days are organised as a way of keeping unwanted goods out of landfill. Work was started to encourage cycling, and to raise funds for bike stands in town and safe cycle routes along the A170. When the summer Moorsbus service was threatened with closure it was challenged, re-started and expanded. All this transport support work, and more, is still going on. The KMEG Thermal Imaging camera is much in demand by residents for locating draughts and places where heat leaks out of their homes or businesses. A Co-operative Energy Company was founded which uses investment to install solar panels. The Manor Vale Working Group meets several times a year to help maintain the woods and meadow in Manor Vale, and also to learn woodcraft and hedge-laying techniques. Apple juice and cider in huge quantities are made from unwanted apples by the members of the Fruit Project and sold in the town. Surplus profits are donated annually to local community groups and many other win-win activities!

WHAT DOES IT NEED?

Alzheimer’s Society shout out for 1500 volunteers for Tour de Yorkshire partnership

Alzheimer’s Society, official charity partner for Tour de Yorkshire 2017, is appealing for over one thousand volunteers to support fundraising activity at this year’s cycling spectacular. The Yorkshire fundraising team (pictured at the launch of this year’s route) are recruiting volunteer collectors to raise funds along the race route, taking place Friday 28th- Sunday 30th April. They are also seeking charity champions to help coordinate fundraising activity and inspire their local community to get behind Alzheimer’s Society for the event.

Aimee Maguet, corporate fundraiser for the North, said “Volunteering for Alzheimer’s Society at this year’s Tour is a fantastic way to get to the heart of the race day action. We have already had a fantastic response from supporters wishing to volunteer, but we need hundreds more people willing to donate just a few hours over the race weekend.

people living with dementia across Yorkshire and Humber. Alzheimer’s Society is the UK’s leading dementia charity. We work tirelessly to find new treatments and, ultimately, a cure for dementia. We provide expert information, training, and support services to all those who need our help. We are creating a more dementia-friendly society so people with the condition can live without fear and prejudice.

“You will be part of an amazing team, uniting to raise vital funds and awareness for the many thousands of people affected by dementia across Yorkshire.”

Visit www.alzheimers.org.uk/ tourdeyorkshire to register as a volunteer fundraiser. If you would like to volunteer your services as a charity champion for the Tour, please contact Julie Lee on 07484513640 or julie.lee@ alzheimers.org.uk

Every volunteer will receive support and materials to help them in their role. All funds raised from the Tour will go directly towards improving the lives of an estimated 67,000

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Paul Robson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles.

SECOND YORK CHOIR FESTIVAL - BIGGER & BETTER billing. Apart from York based choirs there are choirs from Haxby, Easingwold, Boroughbridge & Tadcaster. There are 3 youth choirs, including one of last year’s participants Tutti Amici as well as newcomers “York Light Youth” and “Queen Ethelburga’s College Choir”.

2016 saw Joseph Rowntree Theatre stage the first York Community Choir Festival with a mix of choirs performing over 3 concerts and it was deemed such a success by both audiences and the choirs that they were all calling for more before the last concert was over! Not only that, but other choirs from near and far heard of the event and the organisers had to field numerous requests for a bigger festival in 2017. So, the 2017 festival (March 29 – April 1) will feature FIVE concerts, each with FOUR CHOIRS sharing the

OK, it seemed like a perfectly sensible thing to do when I filled in the application form in December 2016... I have been fortunate enough to be selected as 1 of 12 riders to take part in a 1 mile 1 furlong flat race round the Knavesmire at York Racecourse on June 17th 2017 to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support, kindly sponsored by Best Western Hotels. Now, I have never sat on a racehorse before and this event will be in front of a grandstand full of 25,000 people at the end of a normal race day, riding a fully fledged racehorse! I lost my Grandma to pancreatic cancer in February 2016 and I had close dealings with Macmillan Cancer Support during the difficult period from her diagnosis to her departing this world. As a fitting tribute to my Grandma, who worked for Coral Bookmakers for many years, I am excited to be taking part in the Best Western Hotels and Macmillan “Ride of Their Lives” 2017. SHORT STORY

THE FRIENDS OF YARROW AVENUE by Jackie Brewster

“What time do you call this?” Gladys was straightening papers at her mahogany desk when Jean came shuffling into the study. “We can’t have dawdling the Press are coming.” “Sorry,” said Jean, “I just bumped into Mr Pike at number three.” “How’s he?” Gladys asked. “He’s got these temporary dentures,” Jean said. “They’re absolutely huge. He reminds me of that old cartoon dog, what’s his name?” “False teeth, whatever the size, are hardly an excuse for leaving his bin out,” Gladys muttered tartly. “Did he have anything to say for himself?” “Nothing much.” Jean began unwinding her scarf. “Just some remarks about the tulips.” “Remarks?” Gladys sat upright. “What sort of remarks?” One thing she’d discovered since appointing herself Chair of the Friends of Yarrow Avenue was that there were always remarks. She’d thought her neighbours would be glad of a cheerful reminder that it was time to take down their outdoor Christmas lights, or attend to the guttering. Who wouldn’t be glad of a note suggesting that they tackle their privet? All she got was remarks. Things would change after today. A man from the Gazette was coming to photograph the tulips they’d planted on the avenue’s grass verge. She’d had her hair done specially. With the right publicity, Gladys imagined, she’d finally get the recognition she deserved. “He said that given where they’d been planted,” Jean settled herself at the card table which 76 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

doubled as her desk, “he thought they were offensive.” “Offensive!” Gladys scoffed. “Who could possibly be offended by tulips?” “I know!” Jean picked up her stapler as though she’d never seen one before. “Have you walked down to admire them yet?” Gladys had not; she preferred to drive along the avenue. Her role was purely organisational. It was Jean, as secretary, who’d gone out in the freezing fog with a dibber to plant them last Autumn. “What’s wrong with them?” Gladys asked. “I imagine he’s got a wonderful view from his bay window.” “He has,” Jean said. “They look ever so colourful.” “So why are they offensive?” Gladys asked. “They’re not. At least, I don’t think they are.” “What aren’t you telling me?” Gladys narrowed her eyes. “Don’t bother taking your coat off, we’re going to have a look.” Gladys strode through the hall with Jean hurrying behind her. “At first, I decided to plant them so they spelled GOOD DAY!” Jean said. Gladys froze. “Please tell me you didn’t?” She imagined some dreadful municipal park planting scheme. “I didn’t,” Jean said. Gladys breathed a sigh of relief, and set off down the garden path. “I just planted GOO.” Jean stammered. “I see.” Gladys marched purposefully towards the corner of the avenue. “So the tulips just

say GOO?” “Well no,” Jean continued. “I remembered you’d said we should promote our residents’ association. So after GOO, I began to spell out FY – you know for the…” “Friends of Yarrow Avenue,” Gladys interrupted. A little tacky, she thought, but at least people would know who was responsible for the tulips. “Yes,” Jean said, catching her breath. “Only I ran out of bulbs before I could do the A.” “Please tell me my flowers don’t spell the word GOOFY?” Gladys cried. They turned the corner to see poor Mr Pike and his temporary false teeth with the photographer from the Gazette. “Goofy!” Jean laughed cheerfully, “Yes, that was the cartoon dog’s name.” The front page of the Gazette the next day was indeed all about the Friends of Yarrow Avenue and their tulips, finally giving Gladys exactly the type of recognition she deserved. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
