elcome to our March edition…
When I think back to starting out in business almost 13 years ago, I never had a fixed idea, a grand design of where the business would go – if anywhere! With absolutely no experience of publishing, design, sales, office work – well anything relevant really – it was a steep learning curve indeed! My family thought I was completely mad but I was passionate about supporting our local area, both our businesses and community groups, and I think over the years we’ve sort of achieved this. Undoubtedly there are always challenges ahead, but with my trusty team I’m pretty relaxed about the future, if still with no grand design! Our communities and businesses are rich with successful people, both male and female. But for this issue, we are, without apology, celebrating International Women’s Day 2018 by running a feature on women entrepreneurs. In waving a flag for ‘women in business’, we’ve been talking to some of our brilliant women-owned businesses and all those that are advertising in this month’s magazine are easy to find by the purple star on their adverts. Support them, they’ve achieved so much! There is, as usual, lots happening in the area. Holly and Nicky have been very busy putting our ever growing listings together. It being spring soon, everywhere is waking up, opening up and welcoming visitors. Get ready for a bumper month! Anyone who reads my monthly tome will know that I sing in Harmonia choir. If you’d like to help

Celebrating being a woman in business for over 12 years! “I believe that the size and magnitude of womenled businesses in generally underestimated. There remains lots of old school attitudes in business and ‘jobs for the boys’. We work on many building sites and struggled to be taken seriously in the early days. These days, of course, it has become much easier with experience. Business is all about embracing change and being creative and I believe women in business are great at this. Women do work differently. We improve constantly by being open minded and fearless. I love pioneering new ideas and concepts in the business and this nonconformity has made us stand out.”
Sarah Clark, owner at Interiors at Nine to Eleven in Malton, says 2018 is going to be their best year yet! She explains, “I have a fantastic team of mainly women who deliver a personalised highly qualified service for our clients. I pride myself on mentoring and employing local people to give our clients something uniquely different and wow them with something they cannot do themselves or buy elsewhere. We are entirely unique, innovative and individual!” Since taking over the business 12 years ago, the business has grown every year. The team work from a beautiful retail showroom at the heart of Malton which gives a visual platform for their beautiful work whilst offering lifestyle gifts, accessories. It is itself a destination! On being a woman in business, Sarah highlights her main challenges over the years:
“At Interiors at Nine to Eleven we are passionate about design, striving for individuality constantly creates exciting fresh ideas. Our enthusiasm for interiors is limitless and this produces truly distinctive results” Visit Interiors at Nine to Eleven at the top of Malton Market Place. The showroom offers an inspirational and comfortable environment to shop, design and showcase their bespoke products and services.

New Fundraising Role at St Leonard's Hospice You may have already heard of the work the Hospice does. In the 12 month period ending November 2017, almost 10% of the patients cared for at St Leonards Hospice were from the Ryedale area and the Hospice@Home team travelled over 9000 miles to provide care and support to people in their own homes. Kathryn says, “I would be very happy to talk to local schools and community groups about the work of the Hospice. Our care is free of charge to patients and their families but not free to provide, so I am always keen to support the community with any fundraising events in aid of the Hospice too.
S
t Leonard’s Hospice is an independent charity, providing specialist palliative care and support for local people with life-limiting illnesses and their families and carers. Its catchment area covers all of York and the northern half of Ryedale including Helmsley, Kirkbymoorside and Pickering.
“Please do not hesitate to contact me with any ideas you may have - there’s no such thing as a bad idea! Hopefully you will start to see me out and about in the Ryedale area so please do look out for me and say hello”.
Kathryn Craven recently joined the team at St Leonard’s as the Community Fundraiser for Ryedale and District. She says, “The Hospice is a very special place for me. I have personally experienced the Hospice and the wonderful services that they provide, both for patients and their loved ones, and it truly was a ‘haven’ for me when I needed it most. “My role as a Community Fundraiser is to raise awareness of the work that the Hospice does and to let people know how we can care for them. The Hospice has an In-patient Unit, Sunflower Centre and the Hospice@Home service. In a relaxed and friendly environment, every patient is recognised and treated as an individual. With our support, patients are able to enjoy the best possible quality of life. Our care also extends to support for families and carers.” In addition to a team of highly experienced doctors and nurses, the hospice has specialists in a wide range of roles including complementary therapy, lymphoedema care, physiotherapy, social work, bereavement, occupational therapy and spiritual care.
Kathryn can be contacted by phone on 01904 777 777 or 07388 946 840, or by email at Kathryn.Craven@stleonardshospice.nhs.uk” www.stleonardshospice.nhs.uk

Well known and loved on the Cajun scene, Charlie Skelton has put together a special band for the Saturday evening Ceilidh and organisers are delighted to welcome the Rhythm Exchange Band from York who will play at the Vintage dance on Sunday afternoon, when of course there will be chance to wear that vintage gear! Each of these dances will be preceded by morning dance workshops to put dancers, new to these styles, through their paces. There will also be the usual mix of seven great Cajun & Zydeco bands from the UK and Europe and the festival weekend will again be expanded for locals and early arrivals, to include a Thursday night gig by Bosco Beret. The main festival kicks off on Friday with Cajun band, Acadian Strings at 7pm. A real treat follows at 9pm with Trio Hot Creole - a brand new line up featuring Chris Hall the undoubted supremo of British Cajun and Phil Underwood another hugely influential figure on the scene. This ‘supergroup’ is completed by Hazel Scott’s guitar and vocals. Saturday is packed with workshops, music sessions, the Mardi Gras parade with Rough Chowder, the Cajun Ceilidh and at 8.15pm Manchester band Cajun Specials make their festival debut and, from Holland the exciting Vuig band will close Saturday night. INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY 8TH MARCH 2018
CELEBRATING OUR LOCAL
WOMEN IN BUSINESS Currently in the UK just 22% of small and medium sized businesses are majority women-owned. Small firms already make a huge contribution to our economy; if we were to harness the still largely untapped potential of women entrepreneurship, it could lead to additional jobs, economic growth and a more diverse and representative small business community. Federation of Small Businesses, 2016 From left: Merryn Wilderspin (Ashcroft Digital), Stephanie Hackett (Stephanie Hackett Foot Health Professional), Joanne Fairclough (Jody Gray Upholstery), Yvonne Slack (Plum), Lisa Crowe (Lisa Crowe Estate Agent), Mo MacLeod (Rickshaw), Phoebe Court (Slimming World)
Celebrating Our Women Entrepreneurs On International Women’s Day 8th March 2018
Alongside International Women’s Day on 8th March and the 100th anniversary this year of some women getting the right to vote, we thought it a great opportunity to celebrate our local businesswomen.
W
omen are crucial to economic growth and never more so than in our local area. In deciding to run this as a feature this month, it was with confidence that in our area we have many and diverse businesses owned and run by women.

International Women’s Day was founded in 1911 as part of the fight for gender equality and to celebrate female achievement. It is not associated with any one group but brings together governments, women’s organisations, corporations and charities. Many years on, in what context do we celebrate this day when women have achieved so much? Maybe this is a bit of a tall question for the Handy Mag and we can defer to reports from the World
Economic Forum that state that the gender gap is still real and will not close until around 2186! Maybe it’s more useful to recall the original aim of International Women’s Day – to achieve full gender equality for women in the world. A hundred years on and accusations of underpay, underrepresentation and bullying are still prominent in the news, with greater cultural ‘divides’ still evident in other countries. It feels like there is still much work to be done. The theme of this year’s International Women’s Day campaign is Press for Progress to recognise the current global momentum for change – whilst also celebrating the achievements of those who have overcome barriers. An area in which women have made enormous strides in the last century is in business ownership and enterprise. In the early twentieth century, female entrepreneurs were largely none existent but today, just over 1 million women in the UK run their own companies. Whilst this sounds like a good figure, according to the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills, in 2014 only 20%
All of the businesses that are owned by women throughout the Handy Mag this month have a purple star placed on the top corner of their advert. We’re very lucky to be in an area with so many brilliant women entrepreneurs! of single person businesses are owned and run by women, which as a figure is growing but still low. However, in our local area, towns like Helmsley, Malton, Pickering and even York seem to be faring better than the UK average. In 2016 six out of ten town centre businesses in Helmsley were owned by women and in Malton (anecdotally), the situation we see from our windows is similar. Last year the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) published a report called ‘Women in Enterprise: The Untapped Potential’ which attempted to
understand the challenges faced by women business owners, but also identify solutions that would increase the number of women actually setting up in business. While the report found that women-led businesses face many of the same challenges all small firms encounter, including cash flow issues and difficulty accessing finance, there appeared to be issues which were more acute for women-led businesses. The FSB spoke to more than 1900 women business owners in the UK and found the key challenges included achieving credibility for the business, balancing work and family life, and a lack of confidence. The report also recognised that an increase in women entrepreneurship was vital to creating a dynamic and vibrant business community. As you’d expect, at the Handy Mag, we talk to a lot of businesses, many of whom are womenowned – and of course we are one ourselves! Based on our experience, women entrepreneurs work differently (To my husband and son; please note I said differently, not better!). Sarah Clark, owner of Interiors at Nine to Eleven for 12 years, says “There are still lots of old school attitudes in business and a challenge in being taken seriously but I believe that women have a creative approach, are open minded and don’t conform to previous business stereotypes.” So let’s celebrate all those women locally who support our local economy. Give them your support, use their services, take them seriously and help their businesses to grow. To all you women business owners out there, trust your judgement and have confidence, think big and be proud of your achievements.

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL
How to survive Easter Treats
Plum is now online
W
e wouldn’t be human if we didn’t enjoy the odd treat and Easter seems to be the time of Year (close on the heels of Christmas) when we get to indulge our sweet tooth. by Christine Parker
As dentists these are the peak times BDS (GDC 72136) for dental breakages associated with sweeties and with even NHS crowns costing hundreds of pounds the avoidance of damage in the first place would seem sensible.
So how do I get to enjoy my Easter treats and not suffer the consequences? These simple bits of advice might help: Don’t store chocolate in the fridge as it makes it very hard and likely to shear off the side or corner of a filled or worn tooth, many times this can result in a tooth needing to be crowned . If the weather is hot take it out 20 minutes before and let it get nearer to room temperature but always keep hard materials away from heavily filled teeth. Personally I would never bite toffee, chunky chocolate or Crème eggs all have a really good thickness to them. To reduce your risk of tooth decay try to eat any sweeties immediately after your meal as a dessert, they might not improve your waistline but they won’t add to your risk of decay. The very worst thing to do is to spread them out between mealtimes as this puts your teeth under attack for much longer.
So be greedy and have them all at once! For personalised advice on dental care please contact Jan at Howardian Dental

DOG OF THE MONTH: BARNEY Barney is a 5 year old Pug x ShihTzu who came into the rescue in a terrible state. He has now had all his vaccinations, been castrated and had a bit of a makeover. He gets on fine with small dogs but can be a little ‘vocal’ around bigger ones. This isn’t aggression, just a lack of socialisation in his previous life. Due to his breed a new owner must be prepared to have him groomed regularly and keep his face clean on a daily basis. In return they will have a little companion with a big character.
For further information on Ryedale Dog Rescue please visit our website www.ryedaledogrescue.com or you can contact us on 07581 324153 (Please remember we are a charity run entirely by unpaid volunteers, most of whom work full-time, so please be patient and we will return your call as soon as possible. Thank you)

Do I really have to brush my dog's teeth? Dr Sarah Hunter B.Vet Med MRCVS. Station House Vets Brushing your dog’s teeth may seem like a crazy thing to do! However, this is the best way that you can prevent painful and serious dental problems. Bacteria builds up in the mouth after eating, causing inflammation of the gums (gingivitis) and calculus formation, this can then lead to weakening of the ligaments around the teeth, forming pockets of infection. Having such a high number of bacteria in the mouth can lead to bacteraemia which can be very serious for the other organs and can even cause death. Dental disease can be very painful for your pet but sometimes the signs can go un-noticed as animals are very good at hiding pain and will often continue to eat hard food. The signs of dental disease that you may notice include; bad breath, dropping food, favouring one side when chewing, drooling, pawing at the mouth, swellings on the face and aggression or pain when being touched around the mouth or head. A good quality diet, dental chews and water or food additives can help to reduce dental disease but the most effective method is to brush your dog’s teeth, this needs to be done at least every other day but ideally every day. Tooth brushing also allows you to check the mouth for any other abnormalities such as growths, lesions or pale gums, ensuring that problems can be spotted and dealt with quickly.

When we administer your pet’s annual vaccination, we also check the teeth as part of a health check. If we find any abnormalities, we often recommend that a thorough dental examination under general anaesthetic is performed as well as a dental scale and polish. It is important to treat early dental disease appropriately otherwise it can progress and several teeth may need to be removed, as can be seen in the following pictures. Because good dental care is so important, we are offering our clients a discount of 10% off all dental procedures during February, March and April. For more information on dental disease or to get your pet checked, please call us on 01653 618 303.

York Literature Festival 15th - 26th March
The 2018 programme has a wide variety of authors, artists, book readings, talks and events taking place across various venues in York. It starts with a special joint-launch event celebrating York Writers. The York Centre for Writing will launch at York St John University and members of the Creative Writing department will read from their work before Rob O’Connor, the York Literature Festival Director, will interview Fiona Mozley about her success in 2017 with her MAN Booker Prize shortlisted debut novel, Elmet. This year’s programme contains a specific strand of events looking at History and Historical Fiction. Dr Lucy Worsley will talk about Jane Austen, Sir Simon Jenkins discusses the impact of railway stations, Dr Lindsey Fitzharris will talk about the grisly history of Victorian surgery and Dr Janina Ramirez talks about medieval mysticism. To celebrate the 200 year anniversary of the publication of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, there will be an event with Shelley scholar Professor Angela Wright. In addition, children’s fiction headliner, Guy Bass, will be on hand to introduce his own imaginative interpretation
of Frankenstein’s Monster, Stitch Head. Other events include: Rachel Joyce at Bettys Tearooms, Baroness Sayeeda Warsi, Johnny Ball, the Medicinal Chef Dale Pinnock, and a pre-festival event with Elizabeth Buchan and Joy Rhoades. There are also poetry events for all ages, drama performances and creative writing workshops, including the return of the Writers and Artists One Day Creative Writing Conference. This year sees the return of the York Literature Festival HUB with writing groups from the local area at York Theatre Royal. The festival has also partnered with The Wilberforce Trust to present an exclusive event, Poetry for All, including a large screen projection and a BSL interpretation. Rob O’Connor said: “Once again, our thanks go to our headline sponsors, Baillie Gifford, and to our ever-expanding list of local partners: York St John University, St Peter’s School, The Mount School, Make It York, Explore York Libraries and Archives and York Theatre Royal. We look forward to seeing you all in March”.

Keeping Malton blooming in 2018 Malton in Bloom entered Yorkshire in Bloom’s Grow Your Community category and was rewarded with a Silver Gilt, the highest award in the category. The effort put into the submission was immense, often with volunteers giving up evenings, weekends and week days to ensure Malton in Bloom gave its best at all times. The judges gave positive feedback about the tremendous sense of community and the standard of displays - which filled those behind the initiative with a mix of pride and relief that they are on the right path.
M
alton in Bloom 2018 is well underway, building on the magnificent work achieved in 2017 - its inaugural year.
Colourful floral planters and baskets were positioned in and around the market place and along the bridges that link Malton and Norton, building on the established work of the town councils and Fitzwilliam Estate. Additionally, neglected green open spaces were tended to, some for the first time in many years. Numerous community groups got involved in the first year: Malton and Norton Women’s Institute, Malton and Norton Tidy Group, Derwent Diggers, Malton Flower Club, Malton School Gardening Club, Ryedale Squadron RAF Cadets, friends of St Michael’s Church, Malton Primary School, Malton allotment holders and Ablaze, to mention a few. Support came from local businesses, sponsors, Malton Town Council, Norton Town Council, Ryedale District Council’s Streetscene department, CIC and Fitzwilliam Estate.
Work has continued throughout the year. Winter and spring planting has been carried out in the flower beds of Water Lane car park, the raised beds outside JB Motors in Newbiggin, the railway station forecourt and platform, Stanley Harrison House, Malton War Memorial Garden, Malton Library, County Bridge, Railway Street bridge and in planters around the market place. The beds at the four new ‘Welcome to Malton’ entrance signs have been doubled in size. Thanks go out to all who have volunteered so far. There has been a lot of hard work over the winter months in preparation for the year ahead: leaf collections, providing storage, building composting bins, digging, and planting bulbs and plants. For 2018 a number of new groups have signed up to get involved: Malton and District Beekeepers Association; The Croft Community - Camphill Village Trust; Duke of Edinburgh Award participants; Malton Montessori School; Tate-Smiths workforce. Malton in Bloom will be extended to new sites in need of a bit of attention, including Orchard Fields - a major combined effort is planned to transform a wide area into a more colourful and more environmentally rich place. Malton in Bloom is interested in hearing from individuals, community groups and clubs that would like to be involved with moving the initiative forward - maintaining and growing the enthusiasm that has been established. Details can be found at www.maltoninbloom.co.uk.

Kirkbymoorside Environment Group
Thermal Imaging Camera WHILE WINTER LASTS - BOOKINGS STILL BEING TAKEN FREE OF CHARGE Want to save money and fuel? Thinking about improving your wall and roof insulation? Find out where heat is escaping from your home. KMEG volunteers have now used the Lottery funded camera for over 100 homes & businesses in the Kirkbymoorside area. The camera picks up heat, rather than light like a normal camera. Heat can be lost around windows, doors and skirting boards, through the roof or up the chimney of an unused fireplace. Here heat is being lost through a bay window and through the wall from a radiator under the window. You choose if you want any pictures taken. They can be emailed or printed for you. There’s no charge for the camera, but small donations to KMEG help the group with costs like insurance and publicity and are most welcome. To book the camera: email Helen Gundry at helenspost@hotmail.co.uk or phone 01751 432447. We’ll fix a good time to call round with the camera. The best weather conditions are cloudy, dry and cold! Short Story Magnus
“I’m not being funny but I’ve got washing out.” Rhiannon rubbed condensation off the kitchen window. “My sheets are going to smell of sausages.” “What’s that, dear?” Alan looked up from glossing the skirting. “They’re lighting a barbeque next door,” she said, “though it’s hardly the weather.” “Maybe their oven’s not working,” Alan said. “You know what it’s like when you move house.” “Shall I pop round and say something?” Rhiannon asked. Judging by the fact that Rhiannon had been spying through the window all weekend, Alan might have guessed that she would concoct an excuse to inspect the new neighbours. “Why don’t I just bring the washing in?” Alan suggested. He felt that complaining about sausages wasn’t a great way to welcome anyone, especially not a celebrity, to the street. “That’s no use,” Rhiannon muttered, “you can see even less from the garden.” “That’s not what I meant,” said Alan. “If you really want to know who it is, why don’t you just go and say hello?” “I don’t want to come across as pushy,” Rhiannon said dismissively. “But you’re happy to come across as moany?” Alan laughed. The new couple had moved in on Friday, and Alan had yet to catch a glimpse of them. Their old neighbours, the Bingleys, while being useless at the pub quiz, were always happy to feed his tortoise, Magnus, while he was away. He wasn’t certain how he was going to adapt to having celebrity neighbours. “How do you know he’s famous?” he asked, joining Rhiannon by the window. “From the Bingley’s estate agent,” Rhiannon said. “Look, here he comes now.” They stood on their tiptoes to see the top of a bald head behind the overgrown clematis. “With a head that shape,” Rhiannon said, “I can’t help thinking of that Captain Picard.” “You mean Patrick Stewart?” Alan said. “Yes, him off Star Trek,” Rhiannon nodded. “I hope he’s going to prune the Bingley’s clematis.” They were startled by the sound of the doorbell. A dishevelled lady stood on their doorstep. “Sorry to bother you,” she smiled. “I’m Brenda.
We’ve just moved in next door.” “Welcome to the street,” Alan said. “How are you settling in?” “You know how these things are.” She ran a hand through her unruly hair. “I’m afraid I have to start with an apology. Our oven’s broken and Patrick came up with the idea of having a barbeque.” Rhiannon nudged Alan in the ribs. “I’ve noticed your washing’s out,” Brenda continued. “Sorry if it smells of burgers.” “Don’t worry about that,” Rhiannon smiled conspiratorially. “I hear your husband’s a bit of a celebrity.” “That got around fast,” Brenda said in surprise. “I’d prefer it if you didn’t mention it though.” “We totally respect his privacy,” Alan nodded, then added. “After all, he’s boldly gone where no man has gone before.” Brenda raised her eyebrows. “Will Patrick be around much or off filming?” Rhiannon chipped in. “Maybe rehearsing a play?” “He’s not really into amateur dramatics.” Brenda frowned. “Besides, his job at Argos keeps him busy.” There was a confused silence between them. “So, he isn’t Captain Picard?” Rhiannon asked eventually. Brenda stared at them. Alan cleared his throat. “How exactly is your husband famous?” “I’ll tell you,” Brenda sighed. “But like I said, don’t mention it, or he’ll never stop going on about it.” The couple leaned in closer. “Years ago,” Brenda began, “he was a contestant on Mastermind.” “Really?” said Rhiannon cheerfully. “What was his chosen specialist subject?” “Tortoises,” Brenda smiled wanly. Alan rocked on his heels with pleasure. He liked his new neighbours already. By Jackie Brewster

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Spring into Summer at Lastingham Four unmissable concerts at St Mary's Church Spring is turning into an exciting time at St Mary’s, as we present a series of four concerts to appeal to the varied musical tastes of our audiences. On Friday 13th April, The Thorne Trio performs works by Mozart, Elgar and McDowell. Comprising of some of the most talented woodwind players working the in UK today and all graduates of the Royal College of Music and multi-prize winning as individuals, the group has performed at all of the major music festivals, including prestigious venues such as the London Royal Palaces, Wigmore Hall and the Houses of Parliament. Friday 27th April sees the debut concert of locally known Kirkbymoorside Town Brass Band. Over ninety musicians are involved in five bands at various stages of development and training, and the Band is most proud of the number of families involved, with ages ranging from 11 to something “north of 70”, and their commitment to involving all of the community.
On Saturday 12th May expect the roof to be raised in the best possible way as we welcome the York City Gospel Choir. Formed more than ten years ago by Kofi and Heather Mensah, the Choir is popular on the York music scene. Friday 25th May sees another first for St Mary’s as we welcome soloists from Opera North in a programme on the theme of “A Woman’s Life and Loves”. Soprano Lorna James is a full time member of the Chorus of Opera North and has played the leading roles of Musetta (La Bohéme) and Carrie (Carousel) for Opera North, Giulietta (Les Contes d’Hoffamn) for Diva Opera and Micaela (Carmen) for Heritage Opera. Accompanist Annette Saunders will join the singers in bringing an evening of operatic favourites to Lastingham. All performances start at 7.30pm and tickets are £10 (unreserved seating) available from Mrs Andie Cattle on 01751 417223 or email aandiec@live.com

3 in 4 Ryedale Businesses are not Ready for Major Data Law Change in 2018
An estimated 3 out of 4 businesses based in Ryedale are not ready for a major change in the law regarding storage and protection of private data. The General Data Protection Regulation – GDPR – starts in May 2018. And it carries huge fines for companies that break the rules. “Businesses can be fined up to 4% of their turnover,” explained computer expert Nick Teasdale, owner of local IT support company tKnowIT Ltd. “This new law starts in May 2018. The majority of businesses round here don’t even know about the change; never mind being prepared for it.” GDPR will force most businesses to rethink how they treat private data. There are four areas businesses must comply with: 1. The definition of private data will be expanded to include anything could identify an individual, which affects marketing and advertising campaigns 2. People will have the right to see all data held about them, and sometimes ask for it to be deleted 3. Businesses must be more proactive in protecting data, and tell people within 72 hours if their data is lost 4. Businesses that share data with other firms (i.e. suppliers) must ensure they also have appropriate safeguards. The government has confirmed that GDPR will apply regardless of what is happening with Brexit in May 2018. Nick added: “For most businesses round here, this means starting with a comprehensive data audit to see what data they have and where it’s being stored.”
“It’s not something that can be put off till May; it needs to be addressed now.” “We’ve put together a short video and a PDF document to help businesses to get an overview of GDPR. I recommend people check out the ‘Make Sense of IT’ section of our website www.tknowit. net or simply get in touch.” By Nick Teasdale, tKnowIT

The acrid smell of scorching leather, And burning hoof I can recall. And outside still the iron ring tether, Attached securely to the wall. Mighty bellows would heave and snort, Rousing the drowsy forge awake. Red-hot iron was deftly wrought. No task too tough to undertake. From rafters blackened cobwebs hanging. The blacksmith beating a merry tattoo. Hammer on anvil, staccato clanging, As sparks in all directions flew. A quenching trough amidst the clutter, Held water of a rusty hue, That bubbled with a hissing splutter, When cooling yet another shoe. So what to progress do we owe? When progress strikes a parting knell. The village dealt a further blow. The Smithy now an empty shell.

Singing For Safety On 2 March at 7.30 at Trinity Methodist Church, Norton, Harmonia Choir will be “Singing for Safety” to raise funds to support the work of Independent Domestic Abuse Service (IDAS). IDAS started life as York Women’s Aid over 40 years ago and are current partners of Methodist Women in Britain, in the Yorkshire North East District. York Women’s Aid was one of the first refuge providers in the UK and was developed from a 2 bedroom flat donated by a local businessman. More than 10 years ago they started to work outside of the area of York to deliver community based services in Easingwold and Northallerton. They also began providing support to male victims of abuse. To reflect our new areas of work and our new remit, they decided to change the name to Independent Domestic Abuse Services (IDAS).

Matters of the Heart By Revd Peter C Robinson (Vicar of St Michael's, Malton & St Mary's, Old Malton).
A
s I’m to retire as vicar of Malton and Old Malton at the end of April 2018, from 1st March 2018 I will have only 61 days left in post. It’s been suggested that I should download an App on my phone which will keep me informed as to how many days (and even hours and minutes!) remain until this major transition in my life. This could sound as if I can’t wait to step down and am just willing the time away. On the other hand it could be interpreted that I dread what lies ahead and regret the short time that I have left as vicar. The truth is that I am looking forward to retirement and this positive anticipation has been fuelled by other retirees who’ve recently said to me, ‘Retirement years are the best of life’. However, I’m also enjoying ongoing ministry and the opportunities of each day. From our earliest days, life for all of us involves anticipating moments that are in the future. It’s good to have something to look forward to. But there’s a danger with too much looking ahead that we lose sight of the present. There’s a great eighteenth century spiritual classic entitled, ‘The Sacrament of the Present Moment’ believed to have been written by a French Jesuit priest, Jean-Pierre de Caussade. As the title suggests, Jean-Pierre encourages us to “live in the moment,” accepting everyday obstacles with humility and love. It’s a book which has influenced many for good. Each day is God’s gift, as is each moment of every day. If we come to live with this understanding and learn to make the most of the present, even in difficult periods of life, then we are likely to find ourselves truly blessed.

Gardening Get Your Soil into Shape
crops. So getting your soil into good condition and keeping it well looked after is key to great gardening. At this time of year there is still time to shape up your soil before the gardening season really begins in earnest.
Plants and gardens need a lot of different things if they are to look their best, but one of the most fundamental needs of all is soil. And the better the soil, the better the plants will perform, and the bigger the flowers and the heavier the
Frosty weather can be really useful. It may wreak havoc with some of your plants, but if you garden on a heavy clay soil it can save you a lot of work. If you roughly dig or fork over an empty bed or part of your vegetable plot, the large lumps of clay soil will be acted on by the frosts and will break down somewhat, making them more manageable in the process. Most soils can become badly compacted if you walk or stand on them when they are very wet – you

Forking a soil, as opposed to digging it with a spade, is generally best on a heavy soil as it is less likely to cause compaction. literally squash the air spaces out, especially if the soil is clay or even slightly heavy loam. If you really can’t avoid walking on wet soil, use a few boards or planks as walkways to spread the load. Forking a soil, as opposed to digging it with a spade, is generally best on a heavy soil as it is less likely to cause compaction. But whether you fork or dig, the soil surface usually ends up pretty lumpy. So grab a fork and re-fork the soil again. A final raking will help to produce even smaller lumps on the surface and so get closer to that ‘fine tilth’ often described in gardening books. Adding bulky organic matter such as leaf mould, wellrotted manure or garden compost will help to feed the soil in a natural way, and also to improve its texture so that it holds just the right amount of moisture for as long as possible. There is still time to fork this in now,
to improve the soil in time for this year’s new plantings and vegetables. Incorporating some horticultural grade grit or gravel will also help to improve the texture and performance of a heavy clay soil. Avoid builders’ gravel or grit, as this often contains salts or other materials which can seriously damage, or even kill, garden plants. If your soil contains excessive quantities of small stones, you really should try to get to grips with it before you start to create the garden. Doing this before planting is SO much easier than attempting it once the flowers or vegetables are in place! Some stones are good, but even a lightly stony soil can make growing decent crops of root vegetables, such as carrots or parsnips, virtually impossible – they may taste delicious but they’ll often be forked or otherwise deformed. Manure can seriously transform a soil, adding both texture and food for the plants to grow healthily. Make sure that you bring in good quality manure, with as few additives as possible – not too many wood shavings for instance, as these can form a high percentage of stable manure and make it far

less useful. If possible, view the manure in situ; the last thing you want to do is bring in manure which is riddled with weeds. Try to source manure from someone local who you know, and can trust to tell you what chemicals have been used. Manure needs to be well-rotted before being used in the garden – ideally for about two years. Green manures are a great way to feed your soil and improve its condition at the same time. They will also help to suppress weeds and protect the soil from erosion in a windswept spot. They work especially well on parts of the garden where you do not have plants growing year round – as when you use a green manure, you sow seed, allow the plants to grow and then incorporate them into the soil, where they rot down and release all sorts of useful materials. Check out what is available by looking in the seed catalogues and get sowing later this year. Yes, there’s potentially a fair bit of work involved, but you don’t have to do everything suggested and anything you do will make a huge difference! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com

Am I Depressed or Sad? By Jeff Bentley at TLC Counselling
that recently there have been times when I just did not feel like getting out of bed. This was especially on those wet and dark winter’s mornings when I had to take the dogs out for their morning walk. I am aware that this reluctance was temporary because as the mornings have lightened my reluctance to get out of bed has reduced. Secondly, it is therefore important to note the length of time you continue to experience feelings of low mood. It has been suggested that if someone experiences sadness, an irritable mood plus changes in their thinking that impacts on their ability to function for longer than two weeks they would ideally seek some professional help. Experiencing a temporary sadness can happen to all of us at any time. This may be in response to a wide range of events such as falling out with a friend, losing your favourite keepsake, not enjoying that new film or having to book your car in for a service when you know there are lots of things that need attention. As I write this the last example is exactly why I am currently experiencing some temporary sadness. I can use a variety of words to describe how I feel such as low, fed-up, miserable with a sense of impending financial pain and that I feel depressed. But, am I depressed or am I sad. I believe it is important to be aware of the signals that can indicate if this temporary sadness might indeed be developing into depression. The differences between temporary sadness and depression are subtle and misunderstandings about how they differ can get in the way of someone seeking appropriate help. The cost of not recognising the differences can be high and therefore it is useful to learn how to spot them. Although the boundaries between depression and experiencing a low mood or sadness are open to interpretation there are some specific indications that can be looked for. Firstly, it is important to note that there are a lot of similarities between the two such as not getting enjoyment out of regular activities anymore, tiredness, irritability and a reluctance to make decisions, a ‘I just can’t be bothered’ outlook and a reluctance to get out of bed. I know personally
Thirdly, the kinds of symptoms that point to depression are both extensive and intensive. Many of us are aware of symptoms such as fatigue, sadness and periods of crying often depicted in TV dramas. But there are lesser known symptoms including difficulty making decisions, too much or not enough sleeping, feelings of hopelessness and self-blame and a general numbness. A diagnosis of depression requires several factors to be present along with sadness and low mood for an extended period of time. So, what’s the bottom line? If you are feeling low and recognise some of the above signs which lead you to wonder if what you are experiencing is more than temporary then you may find it beneficial to check this out with somebody in a professional capacity. Remember that no sadness is too small.
