W
elcome to our March edition… Well, I trust that you’ve survived those miserable winter months and are readying yourselves to welcome in the green shoots and longer days of spring! To help brighten the spirit, this month we’re focussing on spring gardens and we have plenty of local businesses to help you make the most of your outside space. As a small business ourselves that works with many other businesses and community groups, big and small, we have a good insight into what’s happening across the area and we are proud to work with a great diversity of people from all walks of life. Diversity makes our lives richer and we are particularly reminded of this on International Women’s Day on 8th March. This year’s International campaign is called ‘Better the balance, better the world’, and it focusses on gender balance in all aspects of life from government to business, media and sport. The message does seem to be getting through in the UK as a report from the Federation of Small Businesses identifies many positive changes, furthering year-on-year the significant contribution made by women in small and medium-sized businesses and to the UK economy. See page 45 for more information and to see how many inspiring business women we boast locally. This month we said a sad goodbye to Imogen from the Handy Mag team. Having worked with us on and off since she was 13 (now 22), doing everything from admin and deliveries to designing our website and business planning, she is off to pursue a career in software development.

LOFT CONVERSIONS MADE EASY with Stuart Elvidge Joinery
Why choose Stuart Elvidge Joinery? QUALITY FINISH Stuart has over 20 years’ experience specialising in loft conversions, kitchen and bathroom installations. His specialist knowledge means they can advise on how best to use the space to create exactly what you want. And his relationship with reliable local trades ensures quality at every step.
TRUSTED Homeowners across Ryedale and York have already hired Stuart to convert unused loft space into useable space. Many ask him back to complete another project and refer him to friends and family.
T
he thought of undertaking a loft conversion can often seem a daunting task. There’s lots to sort out - even more so if you need planning permission.
Mrs B, from Pickering, says “We wanted to thank you for all the hard work and let you know that I would recommend you to anyone”.
But Rillington based Stuart Elvidge Joinery says loft conversions don’t need to be hard work. He will take care of it all - from planning permission, if required, through to completion - so you get extra space at home without the hassle of hiring multiple contractors and spending valuable time coordinating it all yourself. They use a local independent building inspector to ensure the build meets current building regulations. “Talk to us at the start and we will work with you from start to finish to make sure the project is perfect for your requirements as well as your budget,” says Stuart, the owner.

APPROVED INSTALLER
FRIENDLY, FAMILY-ORIENTATED APPROACH
Stuart understands that families have busy schedules, so will always work around you. Conversions normally take between five and six weeks, but they aim to keep disturbance to a minimum so you can carry on with daily life around the build. If you’re looking for someone trustworthy and friendly to complete your loft conversion, or any other joinery work, call Stuart on 01944 759 241 or 07946 516 336.

ARC CHOIR NEEDS NEW MEMBERS
mpleforth & Ryedale Concert Choir have existed for well over 10 years and are privileged to have the good fortune to enjoy the use of the wonderful arts centre facilities at Ampleforth College, where rehearsals take place every Tuesday evening at 8pm in college term time. This ‘community outreach choir’ is actively seeking to recruit new members to its happy group of singers, to expand the already impressive choral repertoire. Expert musician Vincent Conyngham - Choir Leader and Choir Conductor, maintains he does not want to introduce formal auditions; “A very relaxed chat and simple voice test is sufficient to establish a certain level of competency and familiarity with scores”. Vincent stresses, “we are a friendly, happy bunch of people from mixed backgrounds, who get together to sing for fun and relaxation”. Over the years, the choir has undertaken a variety of smaller programmes of Madrigals, Lenten and Christmas music, as well as medium and large-scale choral events in a wide range of venues including Ampleforth Abbey, The Barbican York, Ripon Cathedral and Castle Howard. Nominal subs
are collected each term and these contribute to the hiring of orchestras and soloists when needed for the large magnificent European choral works. This is just one aspect the Choir would like to expand on, but more members would be needed. The photograph shows a reduced number of members who bravely turned out in recent bad weather conditions. That’s how dedicated ARCC are to their passion and they hope you will be too, so why not join them and sing for rewarding fun! If you are interested, please contact Vincent Conyngham at vincentconyngham@ cundallmanor.org.uk

NEW MONTHLY MARKET IN SHERIFF HUTTON
W
First market Sunday 17th March
ith traditional market stalls outside and smaller stalls indoors, the market will host an array of local, independent traders selling a variety of goods; including food, locally grown fruit and vegetables, crafts and textiles, pet products and much more. Louise Chandler, who lives and runs a local business in the village, came up with the idea of having a regular village market after seeing the success of other markets in other local areas. After testing the waters by putting an advert in the village newsletter, a group of 11 villagers with a variety of ages and backgrounds, along with Louise as Chair, have worked together as the village market committee to organise and promote the new Sheriff Hutton Village Market. The market aims to benefit local causes, projects and organisations in two ways. Firstly, any funds raised from stallholder fees after costs are covered will be distributed amongst local projects and organisations. Secondly, refreshments will be provided in the Village Hall on market days and the committee are encouraging local clubs and groups
COOPERS OF PICKERING
to take turns in providing the refreshments allowing them to raise money to benefit their groups. Aside from the benefit they hope to provide for voluntary groups and projects within the village, the committee also hope the markets will help to enhance community spirit. They are very keen for the whole village to embrace this new idea, and hope that the monthly markets will become a regular part of village life. The first market will be held on Sunday 17th March at Sheriff Hutton Village Hall, York Road, Sheriff Hutton, York YO60 6RA. There will be stalls inside and outside the village hall, and the market will run from 10.30am to 1.30pm. For dates, and a full list of stallholders please visit www.shvm.co.uk.

But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Spotlight On...
T
Local businessman Rob Davies
his month, our spotlight is on Rob Davies, a local website consultant and Fundraising Coordinator for Ryedale Rob with Yorkshire Shepherdess, Special Amanda Owen Families. Speaking with Rob, it’s clear he has never shied away from a challenge. His story begins in Leeds where he worked in advertising for over 20 years, later swapping the city for the North York Moors in 2001. He set up The Orange Tree, a retreat in Rosedale that offered relaxing weekend stays with complementary therapies, which he later sold on to his very first guests. Rob says “I’m thrilled to have established a business, which continues to operate within the same concept and recently featured in The Times Top 20 Yoga Retreats in the World.” He settled in Malton with his family and has become a valuable part of the community, wearing different hats in his day-to-day life. By day, Rob works as a successful website consultant for It’seeze Ryedale. In just five years he has helped nearly 200 local small businesses set up their own website. His most high-profile website was for the Yorkshire Shepherdess, Amanda Owen, a TV and radio personality who has published two popular books about her life on a farm in the Dales with her nine children. In his spare time, Rob has taken on some of his biggest challenges to date. In addition to an Arctic
34 | Handy Mag | March 2019
expedition and Kilimanjaro climb, he is an integral part of community events and has recently joined Malton & Norton Lions. He is the Fundraising Coordinator for Ryedale Special Families, setting up successful events such as the Yorkshire Wolds Cycle Challenge, Norton Santa Run and has been integral in fundraising for the Ryedale Special Families ‘Get a Move on’ campaign which raised £100,000 in 2018. The charity’s goal for 2019 is to raise an extra £150,000 as they aim to move from their current home in Old Malton to somewhere where they can support and provide care for even more families who have children with disabilities or special needs. Over the years Rob has also pursued his interest in music by launching Ryedale Live and Ryedale Young and Live, events that helped local musicians get on stage through acoustic evenings. As a member of local acapella group Four Quarters, Rob has helped entertain and fundraise across Ryedale and the wider area.
York Light Opera The stage also beckoned for Rob. He joined York Light Opera and Malton & Norton Musical Theatre and has performed in shows such as My Fair Lady and local pantos. Oh yes he has! Rob has one last surprise – he occasionally appears as an extra in films and TV series, most notably ITV’s Victoria, where he played the Bishop of Bath and Wells. You may have spotted him on the cover of HELLO! Most of all, Rob would like to encourage everyone to get involved with fundraising events and challenges to help Ryedale Special Families reach their goal. Rob says “I like to make things happen, and I don’t intend on retiring anytime soon.”

RYEDALE FREE FRIDGE
F
ood waste is a hugely important topic for people all over the country and the world. Malton is an acknowledged ‘foodie town’ with many restaurants, cafes, delis, market stalls and food festivals; Norton also has its share of outlets preparing delicious homemade food daily. Data shows that working people in Ryedale earn the least and claim the least in benefits across North Yorkshire and Ryedale Food Bank has been busy distributing dried, tinned and packaged foodstuffs meaning that there is a great need for support for families and all ages. Last year a group of local people came together seeking to create a ‘Food Circle’ and decrease food waste by passing on any unsaleable, but edible, foods whilst also meeting a need for food in the area. In December, Ryedale Free Fridge was opened at the Wesley Centre, Saville Street, Malton. The fridge has now been open 8 weeks and has had over 800kg of food donated. The team would love to make this a metric tonne by the end of February! This week the team are delighted to have local supermarkets Morrisons and Asda involved in the scheme and are very grateful for the contribution of the many other smaller local businesses who are taking part. So far, over 600 local people have come to use the fridge. You do not need a referral, it is for anyone to use. If you can afford to do so, you can leave a donation, if not, there is no need. Ryedale Free Fridge is part of the Community Fridge Network and this was the 40th fridge to open. With the 50th fridge opening last week it is a quickly growing network. The team are looking for volunteers to help man the fridge so if you can spare a couple of hours a week, please get in touch. W
Women in Enterprise
omen-owned businesses now contribute an incredible £105bn to the UK economy. So, as part of International Women’s Day on the 8th March, we’re celebrating the achievements of all female entrepreneurs in Ryedale and supporting the next generation. The Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) published a report in November 2018 called ‘Supporting Women’s Enterprise in the UK: The Economic Case’, which revealed an increase in both the economic contribution and employment generated by women-owned businesses. However, it also revealed there are still 2.7 million women who
want to open a business – but haven’t. And only 22% of small and medium sized businesses are majority owned by women.

PILATESWITH TRACEY
Why? Research from the FSB’s previous report (‘Women in Enterprise: The Untapped Potential’) explores how women face the typical challenges of setting up a small business, such as cash flow and access to finance, but also additional challenges that are specific to them, including: • Balancing work and family life (40%) • Achieving credibility for the business (37%) • Lack of confidence (22%)
.CO.UK
Obstacles like these are limiting women’s ability to start, run and grow their business. It’s a huge potential loss for the economy. For example, if we were to harness this untapped potential, it could lead to an extra 340,000 businesses, support 425,000 new jobs and add up to £10.1bn to the UK economy. The FSB’s report called on the Government to YORK, MALTON, AND recognise the economic contribution by women and

build on this with career advice, role models and access to business support and finance. More needs to be done to help women and lead the next generation of female entrepreneurs. Through long-term business support, vocational education, better advice, mentoring and statutory Maternity Allowance for the self-employed, more women could have the skills and confidence to set up their own business. In the report, a quarter of female business owners highlighted access to finance as a key challenge. So, more is being done to make women aware of the full range of finance options, including alternative sources such as crowd funding and angel investors. Supporting women’s enterprise is crucial in helping individuals realise their full potential, and in turn boost the economy. That’s why the FSB is working with key stakeholders to set up programmes such as: • She Means Business in partnership with Facebook for practical help and support through online learning sessions. • The Women in Enterprise taskforce. • Regional events, resources and networking opportunities (details of which are coming soon).

CELEBRATING 30 YEARS OF DANCING AND PERFORMING ARTS
T
he all-singing, all-dancing Kirkham Henry Performing Arts Centre is proud to celebrate its 30th anniversary this year. Angela Kirkham, who co-founded the school alongside Jennie Henry, explains how their focus remains on giving the joy of performing arts to the communities of Ryedale and North Yorkshire. Since forming in 1989, their values have always been based on nurture and support, which has gained them a well-deserved reputation for excellence. “We wish we could name everyone who has given their enthusiasm and hard work – and still do. There are so many. They willed us to fulfil a dream – for their children and for the future,” says Angela. Many students have gone on to have successful careers in dance and musical theatre, or even

The school also continues to attract third and fourth generation students. Angela says “It’s wonderful to keep in touch with our senior students who have gone on to have a career in the industry, they come back to see us on a regular basis.” The centre holds classes for all ages and abilities, including children, young adults and adults – their oldest student is still dancing at 97 years old! The future looks bright for the school, too. Angela and the team are committed to keeping ahead of all the trends. Not only do they offer triple threat musical theatre – the ability to act, dance and sing which includes ballet and tap – they also have new additions to their growing list of classes. These include Zumba, body conditioning, contemporary dance, Toddler Tunes, Baby Beats, Ballet Buddies and more. Visit their website www.kirkhamhenry.co.uk or call 01653 693 310 for more information.

ou may find that when you next go to the dentist there are some changes to the type of filling you are given. In agreement with an international treaty, we are working to reduce the amount of mercury being released by Christine Parker into the environment. Some people BDS (GDC 72136) may be concerned that amalgam fillings, which do contain mercury, are unsafe and could affect their health. In fact, studies have found that there is more mercury in cow and formula milk than in the breastmilk of mothers who have fillings. I would like to allay any fears. Silver fillings have a long history of safety (150 years) and whilst they might not look as pretty as white fillings, they offer long service and can be placed in very heavily filled teeth. It’s not a great idea to get them removed unless there is a clinical need. When silver fillings are placed or removed, a small amount of silver amalgam is released into the waste. When mercury, from any source, enters the environment it can eventually enter our oceans and this is where the problem starts. Microorganisms convert the previously stable mercury into methyl mercury which is easily absorbed by fish. This is why the government recommends pregnant or breastfeeding women limit their fish consumption to 2 portions a week. White fillings are primarily made of plastic material which is set in the mouth and we do not yet have enough long term studies to establish all their risks. They have been thoroughly tested but they are in no way better than silver fillings. So don’t worry about your silver fillings and if you want to make your fillings last as long as possible book an appointment and we’ll show you how. Technical references are taken from the Dental Protection webinar regarding the Phasing Down of Amalgam. Jan 19.

KEEP SAFE THIS SPRING by Anna Maxwell, C2 Safety
A
s signs of spring begin to appear we begin to think about tidying up the garden. Gardening will involve lifting, lugging, shuffling and shunting of boxes, barrows and brooms. All these activities require physical effort and it is easy to cause an injury such as a strain or pull, and, all too commonly, a bad back. Whatever your plans are you should always consider safe manual handling techniques to help reduce the chance of an injury (which could affect your ability to work). Some basic planning can be the difference between an injury and a job well done. Be mindful of your own strength and physical capability. The weight you can safely carry changes depending on where you carry it in relation to your body. You cannot lift as much if you are holding it above your head, are sitting down or are having to twist for example. Consider the size and weight of the item and reduce it by splitting it up and taking several trips. If it cannot be split then a trolley will help. If you do not have a trolley then ask for assistance from a friend or colleague (this is known as Team Lifting). Check the route you intend to carry the load and make sure there are no trip hazards, tight spaces or things you could get caught up on such as trees, hose pipes, cables or other equipment. Gloves will improve your grip when lifting and also protect fingers and hands from scuffs and scrapes. When picking up a load you should always start from a squat and keep a straight back and stand up through your legs. Don’t bend over with straight legs and a straight back as this is a fast-track to a back injury. Always carry the weight as close to your body as possible around waist/chest level as this is where you are strongest. And when you put the load down don’t drop it! Musculoskeletal injuries caused by poor manual handling account for more than one-third of all work-related illnesses reported to the HSE each year. Employers must provide training and information in the workplace to help workers prevent injuries and this knowledge could save you from injuries in the home too. C2 Safety can provide effective Manual Handling training and Health and Safety support to all types of businesses and organisations from our offices in North Yorkshire. Please contact us to discuss your needs.

DB ALL AND END ALL By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at Pen Life Associates
The world of pensions changed dramatically. You don’t have to look hard to see the words ‘Final Salary’ and ‘Pension Transfer’ in the same sentence. The floodgates have opened. Countless previously untouchable pension schemes can now be transferred into personal pension schemes at people’s will. According to the Financial Times, the value of transfers out of Final Salary (aka Defined Benefit or DB) schemes into Defined Contribution (aka Personal Pensions or DC) schemes jumped from £7.9bn in 2016 to £20.8bn in 2017. Let’s rewind. For decades, a whole host of employers (like Aviva, British Steel, The Post Office, Nestlé and most of the big banks) offered their employees ‘Final Salary’ pension schemes. The benefits were calculated as a percentage of salary. So retirees could go into retirement with a guaranteed, inflationproofed pension for life. Fast-forward to 2015 to the Pensions Freedom. You can now take as much as you like out of a personal pension without restriction. Whereas most benefits from final salary schemes can only be taken as an annual income. And, where most final salary schemes die when you/your spouse dies, personal pensions can be passed down to future generations – Inheritance Tax free! Plus, the current values of a lot of these final salary schemes are eye-wateringly high. And all this means is that transferring out of a final salary scheme for some people is a big no brainer. But making such a decision certainly isn’t black and white. And it definitely isn’t easy. Every individual has their own set of unique circumstances. What’s right for one isn’t right for the other. It so evenly split that we actually advise as many people not to transfer as we advise to transfer – and once you’ve chosen what you want to do that’s it. You can’t go back. It’s permanent. Read on to find out how you can sign up to attend our free presentation. You won’t regret investing some time into your future.

BECK ISLE MUSEUM RE-OPENS FOR 2019
T
he Museum opens with new exhibitions and displays alongside the old favourites. Marking 200 years since the birth of Queen Victoria, this year’s costume exhibition is “Six Decades of Victorian Fashion”. Victoria came to the throne in 1837 and reigned for just over 63 years. During Victoria’s reign, fashion - particularly for women – changed a great deal. The dresses on show reflect these changes, from the soft shapes of the 1840’s to the highly sculpted forms created by the crinoline and the bustle. Pickering Musical Society is celebrating it’s 100th birthday this year and visitors to the Museum will be able to see programmes and photographs from performances in each decade since 1919. For more information visit www.beckislemuseum.org.uk or telephone 01751 473653.
