elcome to the March edition.
I’m hoping that when you receive your magazine we are free of snow and heading for Spring. It is snowing as I write, and I’m dreading having to drive anywhere tomorrow morning. It’s at times like this I could be tempted into living in town rather than a village! This month I thought I’d run some articles about weddings alongside some local wedding-related services. My ‘little’ sister gets married this summer so it is the topic of conversation in my family…. who are the bridemaids, what is she wearing, where is the reception, will I be invited!...etc etc. Weddings are wonderful occasions but I remember how stressful they can be – especially if you are not very organised! On the day before mine, I had all of our close family making DIY flower arrangements for the reception tables. There were some ‘interesting’ creations and it did help make the day memorable though I would recommend using a good local florist! Have a read through if your special day is this year and remember to

source products and services locally if possible. Don’t forget your mum on the 18th March! There are some great ideas for gifts in local shops – so you have no excuses! Last month I put in a special plea to local organisations to let me know what was going on in the area. I received lots of responses from groups I didn’t even know existed! I hope your new listing in the magazine helps swell your numbers. Likewise for businesses! Be sure to be seen in 2012. The Handy Mag is delivered through 17,700 letterboxes in the area and is well read and used by many. To existing and potentially new Handy Mag customers, please get in touch! Until next time.....

British
Countryside
Our British countryside is teeming with life this time of year. To save you getting lost in a wilderness of animal and nature books, here are some of the best to be found. Grab the butterfly net and the binoculars; it’s time to go on a back-garden safari. British Wildlife Photographer Award Collection 2 (Photography)
AA Publishing Who says coffee table books always have to be about antique teapots and small furniture? Bring the outside world in and celebrate the best that this island has to offer. The British Wildlife Photography Awards began in 2009 and this beautiful collection is full of the winning pictures from 2011, ranging from urban intruders to marine life. Vivid images beautifully capture British wildlife in a wonderfully voyeuristic way. The whole collection is a window on the extraordinary lives of animals and is definitely one to be treasured.
RSPB Pocket Nature Wildlife of Britain
If you’ve ever been out with your children and found yourself stumped by the question ‘what’s that?’ then this guide is a must-have for you. With over a thousand species of British animals, plants and fungi, you’ll sound like Chris Packham on Springwatch if you carry this in your rucksack. 10 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Bugs Britannica
Peter Marren and Richard Mabey Determined to help the smallest creatures on our island make the biggest impact, ‘Bugs Britannica’ is a must-have for creepycrawly enthusiasts. It’s wonderfully colourful and informative and guarantees to give you a greater understanding of how insects and humans interact and the importance of our tiny house-invaders. Our gardens and homes are teeming with bug-life and you might find you’re no longer reaching for the fly-spray this summer.
British Wildlife Detectives’ Handbook
Camilla de la Bedovere. This is the ideal companion for budding young naturalists, but most importantly of all…it comes with stickers. This handbook is packed with facts and information on everything you’re likely to see, both in the backgarden and beyond.
Children will love turning detective and finding out what species they’re looking at. You can inspire and encourage them to really explore their natural surroundings without there being a computer in sight. The handbook has tick-boxes for keeping tabs on everything they’ve spotted so they can look back over their casework and truly admire British wildlife.
A Kestrel for a Knave
Barry Hines If you were a teenager in the 1980s then you probably read ‘A Kestrel for a Knave’ in school. For anyone who didn’t, you’re in for a treat. Disillusioned Billy Casper is enduring a deprived and violent upbringing in a small Yorkshire mining town when he builds an unlikely friendship with ‘Kes’, a kestrel hawk. Frequently described as ‘honest’ and ‘raw’ this is a story of how an animal can positively impact on human life. Kes inspires Billy to ‘soar’ and find passion in an otherwise harsh and hopeless life.
Not released until June 2012 Collins Complete Guides - British Coastal Wildlife If you are opting for a ‘staycations’ and holidaying in Britain, reserve this book at the same time as booking your holiday. Our coastlines are quite literally swimming in extraordinary wildlife. This guide covers over 400 species of animals and plants found along our shores and will make a great companion for when you ‘like to be beside the seaside’. Leafing through this book is like sticking your head straight into a rock-pool. It has clear pictures, descriptions and is packed with information to appeal to even the truest of nature enthusiasts.

An ever changing array of
unusual artifacts
O
ur adverts, over the last few years, have focused on our main products, Indian and Yorkstone paving, Walling stone, Caps and Copings, Statues and Ornaments, Aggregates and Rockery. All the usual items you need to construct gardens. We thought we would take this opportunity to introduce another section of our Company, an ever changing array of unusual artifacts in our Reclamation and Salvage area.
The Green Man This carving of “The Green Man” is thought to come from Warter Priory. Built in the late 17th or early 18th Century the possessions of the Priory were sold off in the 1960s and the beautiful gardens were bulldosed into the lake. We have a pair or the finials.
Lendal Tower The steps from this spiral staircase are from Lendal Tower on Lendal Bridge York. The tower was built around 1300 and was originally part of York’s defence system.
St Mary’s Abbey Some of the stone we have is very old indeed, in fact, we have stone from St Mary’s Abbey, built in 1055 by Stephen of Whitby and demolished by Henry VIII during the Reformation in 1533. The centre photo is of stone from York Minster and the Arch sections are thought to predate 1533. 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Stone Trough
We usually have a few in but can probably find you one to suit your requirements.
Millwheels and Grindstone Come and go all the time. Now usually used for House or Village name stones, as a garden feature stood on end or as a water feature. They can be hundreds of years old or fairly recent.
Our interest in reclaimed items is not just confined to stone. We have Victorian glass fishing floats and a Lobster basket in cane. Victorian glazed edgings are usually in stock and we do have some Cast Iron pieces namely Rollers, a Vice, an Anvil and occasionally a fireplace. Always worth a look.

If you’re starting to take a critical look at the exterior of your home now winter is finally over, you’ve chosen a good time to do it.
O
rion Rooflines are looking forward to making the spring and summer their busiest time of year – because that’s the best thing for their customers. Your soffits, fascias and guttering need your attention now, before any issues start to take root. Winter may be the time when any problems with your roof come to light, but it’s also the time when it’s hardest to get them fixed, due to short daylight hours and adverse weather. Orion’s owner William Waltham said: “We get a lot of phone calls in January, because that’s when customers start experiencing the problems caused by out-ofcondition rooflines. However, spring or summer really is the time to get it done, when the weather’s better.” Orion’s services include roofline refurbishment, removal and replacement of rotted
timber fascias, soffits and guttering with quality PVCu Quality is of paramount importance when it comes to repairing or renewing rooflines. William says that around a fifth of the work he does is correcting and repairing slapdash jobs done within the past five years. Some customers have opted for the cheaper option of covering over timber fascias – this leads to long-term problems and more maintenance expense. Orion’s work is guaranteed for at least 10 years – saving on hassle, expense and providing peace of mind. William added: “Ideally, once we’ve done a customer’s roofline, we’d like to never have to see them again. That’s not because we don’t like them, but because we strongly believe the job should be done right first time, so our customers can forget all about their rooflines for many years.” Orion Rooflines work in

homes across the York and Malton area. They also fit rooflines to newly built homes, and carry out repairs to add value and attractiveness to houses their customers are due to put on the market. William’s business was originally known as New Age Plastics, which he launched 12 years ago. When the recession took hold, he boosted his business by contracting an alliance with Orion Windows. Orion Rooflines was born from that alliance – which is now run by William as a completely independent enterprise. He said: “Orion Rooflines has been very successful, and we’re getting busier as our reputation grows. I’ve got a team of three people working for me at the moment, and this year we’re hoping to take on some more staff and buy another van to keep up with the growing demand.” Free no-obligation quotes and advice are available any time from William and his team. You don’t have to be bound by tradition when you tie the knot. Whether you want to do things completely your own way, or just add a bit of interest and flair to your special day, why not start married life by doing things differently? The venue
The parish church had the wedding market cornered for centuries, but now approved venues are appearing everywhere. Interesting venues cottoning include the art deco building inhabited by the Royal Institute of British Architects or the editor’s office of the Daily Mirror. Also getting in on the act are beaches and caves, barns and farmhouses, golf courses, zoos, aeroplanes and boats. For something really unusal, how about Sheffield Wednesday Football Ground, the Houses of Parliament, or the Absolut Icebar, where you can make your vows at five degrees below? 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
The theme
From Star Trek to Cinderalla, punk to Pride and Prejudice, Grease to The Grinch. Take your guests on a bike ride, a picnic, a treasure hunt, or ask them all to dress up as a super hero. It’s your day, so why not indulge your fantasy? Create your own ceremony with your favourite poetry, song lyrics and readings, and writing your own vows makes the ceremony both personal and intimate.
The food
If you know the majority of your guests love bangers and mash, then why not? A good caterer will work with you and your tastes to turn a family favourite into a delicious and memorable wedding breakfast. Take your parents or grandparents back in time with a 1950s, 60s, or 70s retro feast or high tea, or hold the reception outdoors and go festival-style with gourmet food vans.
The first dance
Be your own wedding entertainment with a professional first dance. Training engaged couples is big business for local dance teachers so give one a call to talk about your ideas. Go Bollywood, sweep her off her feet Strictlystyle, or get the entire wedding party involved in a rendition of Michael Jackson’s Thriller video. That number from Dirty Dancing is a favourite Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th March

Wedding
Traditions
The best man’s role is to prevent bad luck befalling the groom. This stems from medieval times when brides often had to be kidnapped from their families – who were loath to part with their healthy, hardworking single daughters. The best man would stand by his friend, ready to assist if things turned violent! The bride stands to the groom’s left during the ceremony, leaving his ‘sword arm’ free to fight off any competitors for her hand. The stag party was originally a Spartan tradition dating back to ancient Greece. In India, Bihari mothers-in-law traditionally place an earthenware pot over the head of the bride-to-be. More are added, and the bride is expected to bend and touch the elders’ feet while balancing the pots on her head. This symbolises the bride’s role in striking a balance in the family. Egyptians traditionally believe the ring finger carries the vein of love, called the ‘vein amoris’. It runs straight to the heart. – not one for grooms with bad backs, though. If you’re feeling really brave, you can dance your way down the aisle – type ‘JK Wedding Dance’ into Google to see how that’s done.
The entertainment
A DJ or a band is just the start of a good wedding reception. Jukeboxes are a good choice, too. A wedding reception is usually enough to get just about everyone onto the dancefloor – but what about the confirmed non-dancers? Roulette and poker tables go down well, as do Scalextric, bouncy castles and pinball.

How to have a well-organised and stress-free wedding
and it’s up to you how you organise it. Don’t let anyone else tell you how to do it, ignore the doom-mongers who say weddings are a nightmare to organise and do it your way, in your own time.
3. Set your maximum budget
Unless you’ve already organised a wedding in the past five years, you’re going to have no idea of what things cost in advance, so it’s difficult to set a specific budget. Setting a maximum spend ensures the budget won’t run away with you. If money’s tight, choose one thing that you won’t compromise on, and then go for value options in everything else.
4. Work far in advance
©Alex Yoxall Photography
The happiest day of your life – or the most stressful? Think of the word ‘wedding’, and the word ‘nerves’ is as likely to come to mind as ‘bridesmaids’, ‘bouquets’ and ‘champagne’. Catherine Lee, owner of Kaleidoscope Virtual Assistant Services, has made a living and a business out of being highly organised. She got married last year and made sure the run-up to her wedding and her big day itself went like clockwork. Here are her tips on how to do it.
as a minimum.
Don’t kid yourself there’s plenty of time, even if your big day is months off. You never know when you might need some contingency time to sort something out. Besides, your entertainer, florist and cakemaker will have bookings in their diaries years in advance. Priorities should be your venue and your minister. I’d recommend checking everything off your list six months in advance
5. Limit your workload
Another tip from the executives – why do something yourself if there are good people out there who can make a better job of it than you? Delegate, delegate, delegate. If money’s tight, rope in your friends. DIY wedding stationery and a homemade cake are great if that’s your sort of thing, but they do take time. The only bit of DIY Catherine did was her wedding favours – 70 gingerbread men and women took two days to bake and decorate. You have been warned!
1. Make a decision and stick to it
Some of the worst wedding stress comes from being unable to decide on the right option. Try to have a reasonably clear idea of what you want before you even open a catalogue or set foot in a shop. Then, take a tip from the typical executive: if you like it, go for it. Sometimes making a decision is the most important thing.
2. Make a decision and stick to it! Yes, it’s that one again. This is your wedding 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WEDDINGS
Weddings on a
Shoestring
Blowing the budget is the easiest thing to do when you’re planning a wedding. For a start, you don’t necessarily know what each item is going to cost beforehand. And once you’ve started looking round at venues, flowers, outfits and caterers, you’re bound to start falling in love with the slightly pricier items. It’s a slippery slope – the average wedding costs between £15,000 and £20,000 now. However, having a tight budget and your heart set on a dream wedding need not be contradictory. Just because wedding fairs and magazines are full of gloss, glitz and impact, you don’t have to measure up to anyone’s expectations. Get back to basics and make your wedding about love, family and making a lifelong commitment in the presence of the most important people in your life. Fortunately, they’re the ones who don’t mind where you got your table decorations from! So relax, don’t worry about the grandeur – and make your day meaningful. Here are our tips.
not including plus ones on your invitations – careful table planning will ensure no-one is left among strangers.
Dress up for less
A brand new wedding dress is an extravagance you might not be able to do without – but the way they depreciate rivals new cars! In the name of research, pop ‘wedding dress’ into eBay’s search box and consider the savings. For bridesmaids and groomsmen, consider giving them a colour scheme and letting them put together their own outfits, accessorised with matching hairpieces or sash belts for the women and cummerbunds, ties or buttonholes for the men.
Stay put
Get married and hold your reception in the same place to keep your venue fee down. Scale down from hotels and country houses and consider a beautiful local pub, a village hall or an outdoor space. Going traditional is good value – churches are by far the cheapest wedding venues. If room hire is going to strain your budget, a cunning option is to hold your legal marriage ceremony in a registry office and then a ceremony that’s all your own anywhere you choose. That way, you could even do it in your back garden!
Short and sweet
There’s a lot of standing around at weddings, which can seem to go on forever. Starting your ceremony slightly later, even 4pm, will reduce your venue hire, drink and alcohol costs.

If your skills are limited, consider learning dressmaking or cake making – look up your local evening classes and add another string to your bow! Getting your family and friends involved is a lovely way to help them feel more involved and less like spectators. So call on any cooks, beauticians, photographers or florists you have around you, professional or otherwise, and request their help. If you ask tactfully and organise plenty of extra help to reduce the pressure, the result will be a comfortable, informal day with a friendly family atmosphere.
Get crafty
A good craft shop will be able to give you tons of help and ideas about church and table decorations, wedding stationery and creative ideas for bride’s favours. You could even make your own bridal hair piece and cake decorations! With care and planning, this is more than a budget option – it makes your day uniquely yours.
A one-item wedding list
Most couples have lived together before they tie the knot – do you really need a pile of brand new crockery? Instead, ask your guests to contribute to your honeymoon. When it comes to booking the honeymoon, there are ways and means of finding value for money: talk to your travel agent about finding the best-value deals. consider booking far in advance – or be adventurous and take a last-minute cancellation.

RYEDALE Hello again, School is now cracking down in preparation for my GCSE exams, which – in all fairness – may cause me to get a decent grade, but right now I want nothing more than to have an essay-free weekend where I can just sit back and relax. I’m now less than three months away from taking my GCSE exams, and no matter what I tell others: I’m terrified. In my opinion, it’s not so bad revising for one or two, as I did back in January, where you can focus your revision on one module for one subject. But sooner or later I’ll need to be revising day and night for almost 15 exams! To be honest, I just can’t wait until it’s all over and I can sit back and relax for a few months. Well, discounting my month in Kenya, which will be fun – but in no way relaxing.

Even though my Kenya expedition is months away, preparations have already been made for my trip. Towards the end of February I had my first of many vaccinations required for travelling to Africa. Starting the course of jabs this early sounds ridiculous, but a few of them need to be done months in advance, and doing it this way prevents having seven different needles poked in your arm at once! In other preparations, I am now ‘hiking’ up my local hill to try to wear in my new walking boots for the trip. I had advice of a friend to stand in water with them on your feet – this supposedly causes them to mould to the right shape!? Though to be honest, I think I’ll do it the more traditional way; at least this way I can let the dog have a breath of fresh air! Until next time,

FOOD
Spiced Rhubarb Cake 1½lb / 600g fresh rhubarb 4oz / 100g butter 3oz / 75g sugar plus extra for sprinkling 2 eggs 4oz / 100g Self raising flour 1 tsp mixed spice ½ -1 tsp ground ginger
For the topping: 3oz / 75g butter 4oz / 100g flour 2oz / 50g Demerara sugar
Rinse and chop the rhubarb into 1in / 2cm chunks. Cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time beating well to avoid curdling. Fold in the flour and the spices. Spoon the mixture into a greased and lined 8in / 20cm cake tin. Level out the mixture and cover with the prepared rhubarb and sprinkle with sugar. Make the topping by rubbing the butter into the flour until it resembles breadcrumbs and stirring in the sugar. Spoon over the rhubarb. Bake for ¾ hour at 180°C/350°F/Gas mark 4 until firm and springy to the touch.
Glazed Salmon Skewers This is a great way to jazz up salmon – with a Japanese teriyaki sauce glaze served with sesame flavoured noodles. Soak the wooden skewers in water for 30 minutes before threading on the strips of salmon to prevent them from burning under the hot grill.
4 x salmon fillets, skinned 6 tbsp teriyaki sauce 1 garlic clove, peeled and crushed 250g packet medium egg noodles 2 tsp sesame seed oil 1 tsp grated root ginger 6 salad onions, trimmed and thinly slices 40g radishes, trimmed and thinly sliced 2 tbsp sesame seeds 30ml honey, warmed 1. Slice each salmon fillet widthways into 2 strips and place the strips in a shallow dish. Mix together the teriyaki sauce and garlic and pour over the salmon. Cover and leave to marinate at room temperature for 30 minutes. 2. Preheat the grill to medium. Thread the strips of salmon onto 8 wooden skewers. Grill the salmon skewers for 3-4 minutes on each side until just cooked through. 3. Meanwhile, cook the noodles according to the packet instructions. Drain well. Heat the sesame oil in a wok or large non-stick frying pan and add the ginger, spring onions, radishes and sesame seeds. Stir fry for 2-3 minutes then Add the noodles and toss well to mix. 4. Just before serving, brush the salmon skewers with the warmed honey and grill for a further minutes. Divide the sesame noodles between four serving bowls and top with the salmon skewers. 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Trust me
- I’m a financial planner!
by Julie Wilson Chartered Financial Planner One of the major issues reported by consumers when seeking financial advice is trust - there seems to be much confusion about where to turn for advice. Trust is the most fundamental basis of any relationship. One of the ways advisers can differentiate themselves is to aim way above the minimum standards required, such as gaining Chartered status - the industry’s gold standard which confirms a firm has satisfied rigorous qualification, professional and ethical criteria or ISO 22222 accreditation - the internationally recognised benchmark for the delivery of personal finance services which denotes commitment to continual improvement. Pen-Life Associates Ltd are the only practice in York – perhaps the whole of Yorkshire – to hold both Chartered status and ISO 22222 accreditation, so you can be confident you are dealing with individuals with the highest standard of professional integrity. There are some things in life that you can have a stab at doing yourself – like DIY or decorating. But other things - like operating on your dog or financial planning - are best left to the experts. This is particularly so in later life when paying for nursing care or Inheritance Tax (payable at 40% on everything you own on death above the £325,000 limit) can decimate savings accumulated over a whole lifetime. Most people know that it makes sense to address these issues rather than bury their head in the sand. If you don’t want to be one of life’s ostriches, contact us now for an informal chat. Julie Wilson is a Chartered Financial Planner and Director of Pen-Life Associates Ltd, Chartered Financial Planners, who help individuals and small businesses make the most from their money.

PETS
Inherited Diseases by Nicola Vincent BVSc MRCVS Station House Vets
W
hen we consider acquiring a new pet there are many things to think about be it a cat or a dog. One thing we don’t like to think about, though, is the possibility that our new pet may become ill at some point, and worse still that they may become ill with a condition which they have inherited from their parents. Unfortunately, in the pedigree breeding world, dogs especially, there are many such conditions. These have often resulted from breeding for cosmetic appearances rather than health, and occasionally from unscrupulous breeders and breeding techniques such as inbreeding. The conditions range from orthopaedic problems such as hip and elbow dysplasia to opthalmic conditions like progressive retinal atrophy or hereditary cataracts. Conditions related to the conformation of a breed (or the way it looks) include entropion and ectropion (deformities of the eyelids) and disc problems in dogs with backs that are very long in relation to the length of their legs or soft palates that are too long and cause noisy breathing in breeds with short noses such as bulldogs, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels and pugs. These conditions that are linked to the “look” of the breed are often what is known as polygenic, which means that they are influenced by several different genes and so aren’t easy to detect in screening tests. However, other problems that are polygenic aren’t as easy to pick up until they cause a problem, such as heart problems like dilated cardiomyopathy. Over recent years screening tests have been developed for a lot of disorders. Hip and elbow dysplasia is screened for using the scoring scheme where x-rays of these joints are assessed by a panel of experts and given a mark for different aspects of the joint which is then added together to give an overall score, which should be as near to zero as possible. Most of the eye conditions are checked for in both the parents, and sometimes the puppies, by an expert opthalmologist. Other genetic conditions need either blood tests or cheek swabs to test for them and these include Von Willebrands disease in Dobermanns (a condition where the blood doesn’t clot properly) and Copper Toxicosis in Bedlington Terriers (a condition where copper builds up in the liver over time and stops it working properly). 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Most breeders are very responsible and these days are doing all they can to try and breed these problems out of their specific breed. Where screening tests exist, they will have had them done and be able to provide certification as proof of the result. However, it is always worth checking with a breeder and having a thorough look at the pedigree of the particular animal you are buying to ensure that no in-breeding has taken place. The specific conditions are too numerous to go into each one in detail but there are several websites with further information provided where you can look into the possible conditions the breed you are thinking of buying may be at risk of, these are: www.aht.org.uk/genetics_tests.html www.thekennelclub.org.uk/item/315 www.ufaw.org.uk www.dogbreedhealth.com

Top 5 Cars
of the Tokyo Show
Last year’s Tokyo Motor Show was dominated by green technologies and wacky concepts – but among the madness there were some important model launches. The show isn’t one of the biggest. Spread over four halls you can get around it easily in a day – unlike the blister-inducing mass of motors that is Europe’s biggest show in Frankfurt, Germany. However, as the Japanese makers’ home event, it is absolutely packed with innovation. I spent two days scouring the halls and soaking up the culture, but eventually these five emerged as my picks of the show.
by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine (CarDealerMag.co.uk)
Toyota GT 86 It’s about time Toyota got interesting again and the GT 86 certainly floats our boat. Rumoured to cost around £28,000 when it goes on sale in the UK, the rear-wheel drive car features a 2.0-litre 197bhp unit and will hit 60mph in seven seconds. It certainly looked good on the stand and was a welcome break from the green concepts doing the rounds everywhere else.

MOTORING Subaru BRZ
Subaru has been having a hard time of it in the UK of late, so the BRZ comes as a much-needed breath of fresh air. Jointly developed with Toyota, it’s the sister car to the GT 86, and in the company’s famous corporate blue it looked fantastic. The BRZ has slightly different body panels and interior to the Toyota. Just don’t mention the new, and very bland, Impreza also on display on the stand...
Nissan Juke Nismo
The Juke has been crying out for a real sporty model and it looks like Nissan may finally answer our prayers thanks to its tuning arm Nismo. This is the first car that’s been given the Nismo treatment and although currently billed as a “concept” it’s highly likely we’ll see it on our roads soon. Exterior and interior tweaks will be matched with a breathed-on powerplant.
Mercedes F 125!
mean anything, but Mercedes was quick to point out the F 125! showcases the future design direction of the next S-Class. The concept featured fuel cell technology which would give it a range of 1,000km, a lightweight body construction, gullwing doors and a cloud-based infotainment system. But ignore all that, it’s the looks that are most likely to shape future luxury barges from the firm.
Hino eZ Cargo
Tucked away in the corner of the truck section of the show was this fantastic delivery van. Not only does it look superb, but it showcases EV technology and a clean uncluttered design that would make Apple proud. A spokesman for Hino told us it has a range of 50kms, can charge in six hours and hit 70kph. Trials will take place next year before a decision is made whether to put it into production. We just hope the looks are carried over – it certainly beats a boring Transit.
We’re not big fans of concepts that don’t

Scarborough Symphony Orchestra Concert – a real family affair
A performance with the Scarborough Symphony Orchestra next month is a dream come true for a Middlesbrough-born violinist. Ian Belton, now a leading international player, will take the stage with his wife, the talented cellist Sophie Harris, to perform the beautiful Brahms Double concerto for Violin and Cello with the orchestra in Scarborough’s Methodist Central Hall, Queen Street, on Saturday, 17 March 17. “It’s wonderful to have the opportunity to play this together and even better that we can make it a real family occasion.” said Ian. His sister, Judith, who lives in Pickering, will also be playing 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
violin in the orchestra. As Secretary of the orchestra Judith was instrumental in arranging the concert. “It wasn’t difficult,” she said. “Shaun Matthew, our conductor and the orchestra didn’t need any persuading to play with such renowned musicians.” Sophie and Ian enjoy performing together but because of their individual professional careers rarely get the opportunity. They also tend to tour at different times to ensure that their two young children have at least one parent with them! But this time, their most enthusiastic supporters, Beatrice, aged seven and five-year-old Theo, will be in the audience to add to the family occasion. Ian is a founder member of the Brodsky Quartet, which has performed in over 40 countries and made many TV appearances,
radio broadcasts and over 80 CD recordings. Ian has performed with musicians from both the classical and popular field including Anne Sofie von Otter, Marie-Joao Pires, Elvis Costello and Sir Paul McCartney. Sophie is cellist with the Duke Quartet, and also enjoys a solo career, working with eminent composers including Gavin Bryars, Michael Nyman and Steve Reich. Tickets, for the concert, which also includes Beethoven’s famous Fifth Symphony, cost £10, or £8.50 for concessions. Full-time students and children are free. Advance tickets are on sale at Scarborough Music in Scarborough and the Art Café in Whitby or at the door on the night. Concert starts at 7.30pm. For further information or interview requests please contact Judith Belton on 07770 983694

Fairtrade Groups in Malton, Norton and Pickering are asking you to ‘Take a Step’ in 2012 Why take a step?
Because trade isn’t working for the world’s poorest. Millions of people in developing countries depend on farming. But they are trapped in poverty by the rules of world trade, keeping those at the start of supply chains powerless to earn enough to cover their costs and with nothing to save for their families. But with just one step you can be part of changing this Choosing Fairtrade offers farmers and workers a better chance to work their way out of poverty, through fairer wages, safer conditions at work and a little extra, called the Fairtrade premium, to invest in projects to improve life for their whole communities. Little steps add up to big changes There’s a lot of support all over the UK and beyond for Fairtrade, 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
people in their everyday lives, doing what they can to put fairness first. But we need to reach more farmers and workers struggling to get by. So that’s why we’re asking for 1.5 million steps for Fairtrade in 2012. What will yours be? Your step for Fairtrade can be as simple as trying a new Fairtrade product, or as big and bold as launching a campaign to get your whole town to go Fairtrade. Every single one counts, because together they lead to life-changing projects in developing countries. You can register your steps on the Fairtrade website or why not get involved locally. alkers are Welcome towns and villages are places which have something special to offer walkers. The Pickering group promotes the town and surrounding area as a fantastic place to get out and about, and, working with the local Countryside Ranger, they make sure that footpaths and facilities for walkers are well maintained.
This years Walking Festival will consist of 12 walks in and around the Pickering area, varying in length from 5 to 13 miles and all these, together with further information, can be viewed on the Walkers are Welcome website at www. pickeringwaw.btck.co.uk The walks will be popular so it is advisable to book for some of the walks as numbers are limited. Bookings can be made through the Tourist Information Centre, Ropery, Pickering. Tel 01751-473791 or by email to pickeringtic@

The area has some of the best footpaths and scenery in North Yorkshire. The costs are very low and it gives walkers a chance to explore footpaths they may not have previously known.” Why not fish out those walking boots and join the group for one or more of the walks over the weekend.

Yorkshire Cajun & Zydeco Festival 2012 Celebrating 25 years of Cajun & Zydeco music and dance
March 9th, 10th, 11th Three days of dancing and music at the Milton Rooms, Malton. A fantastic weekend of great bands, Cajun dancing, jam sessions and authentic Cajun food
Tickets £12 - £55 Available from t: 07786 040734
e: yorkshirecajun@hotmail.co.uk
www.yorkshirecajun.com
What’s it all about?
Alligators, swamps, bayous, fiddles, accordions, jambalaya, crawfish pie, file gumbo – Cajun music. The lyrics are mostly in French, the instrumentation with fiddles, triangles and accordion make it hardly a ready made formula for widespread acceptance and it’s not on the radio & television or in the press too often. But it has become hugely popular here in the UK, largely due to the music’s irresistible call on the listener to dance!
Home of the Cajuns
South West Louisiana in the USA has been home of the Cajun people for almost 250 years. How they came to be there is a long story, but for 200 years their culture, music, dance and cuisine developed in relative isolation until 1964 at the Newport Folk Festival when Cajun music was a huge hit.
Yorkshire bands for the 2012 Festival The Wandering Aces
We are thrilled that Nick Thompson, an original member of The Buttermountain Boys and from Malton, will be playing the festival with traditional Cajun band The Wandering Aces. Nick joined with Paul Judge in 1994, who’s band the Lizards had also been influential on the scene in the late 80’s.
The Cajun Aces
The Cajun Aces are the North of England’s top Cajun band since
1992 and they just had to be on the bill for the first Yorkshire Cajun & Zydeco Festival!
Red Hot Boudan
This is the third Yorkshire band on the bill for the first ever Yorkshire Cajun & Zydeco Festival. Red Hot Boudan are very popular here in Ryedale and John Womack’s band play their Cajun with a country tinge. With popular local musician Anna Shannon on fiddle, the band are sure of a good local following.
More Festival bands
From the south of England we have Acadian Driftwood and for Zydeco fans ZydeGONutz. And from Holland, reflecting a truly international flavour, there’s Downtown Cajun Band all leading bands on the European Cajun & Zydeco scene.
The ‘Godfather’ connection
Completing a stellar line up, not one, but two bands featuring a guy acknowledged as the Godfather of British Cajun. The man who is head and shoulders above all others in bringing Cajun music to these shores: Chris Hall from Derby. For our festival Chris brings two of his current outfits:
The Bearcats, long established and loved by dancers for their rock solid rhythms and his newest incarnation: The Creole Kings, eagerly anticipated by Cajun fans up and down the country.
The Dancing
There will be several dance workshops at the Festival which will cater for absolute beginners and beyond! It’s a range of dances including Two Steps, Waltzes, and the one everybody wants to do – the Cajun Jitterbug. Then there’s Zydeco! Are you ready to Zydeco? Zydeco is the music and dance of the black French speaking population of Louisiana and has a heavier helping of Afro Caribbean rhythm and more of a taste of the blues.
Cajun Cuisine
Food is such a vital part of Cajun culture so the Festival will also give plenty of opportunity to sample that and show there is far more to Cajun cooking than Cajun Chicken!! Please go to the website for further information on the Festival, the bands and the people involved: www.yorkshirecajun. com. Another valuable resource for all things Cajun is www. cajunuk.co.uk

egular top class foodies and supporters of the event are joined this year by two new chefs, both with a prominence that stretches well beyond Yorkshire. Ben Cox, Yorkshire Life Dining Pub of the Year 2011 winner and Yorkshire Pudding Champion from the Star at Sancton and Lionel Strub Chef Patron, the Mirabelle in Harrogate, join a culinary cast of award winners and Michelin starred professionals. They include: James Mackenzie chef-owner of the renowned, Michelin starred Pipe and Glass Inn; Rob Green, multi award winning National Seafood Chef of the Year, Green’s of Whitby; Robert Ramsden, Specialist Food Development at Deli Fresh; Stephanie Moon, Chef Consultant at Rudding Park; Peter Neville from The Pheasant Inn at Harome, Yorkshire Life Restaurant of the Year, 2011; Priya Raman, from Raman’s Kitchen winner of the Hairy Bikers Best Cooking Family In Britain; Richard Allen, National Executive Chef of Award winning, Create, Leeds; Dan Farrall, The Jolly Farmers, Leavening, and Community Partnership Awards Winner 2011, Bettys Cookery School from Harrogate. Joining them are local luminaries Sophie Legard, of Malton Relish and Anthony Gillham joint owner and chef of the newly opened gourmet pub, The New Malton. The Malton Food Lovers Festival also boasts five superior Patrons. The esteemed Italian cook Antonio Carluccio and award winning food writer and critic Matthew Fort are the two newest Patrons announced for 2012. They join food columnist and television presenter Tom Parker Bowles, the distinguished kitchen grand dame, Rosemary Shrager and the much admired Andrew Pern, chef patron of The Star Inn at 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Harome. All five Patrons will be demonstrating in the Cookery Theatres over the two day event. In addition, Selina Scott, the acclaimed national journalist who lives nearby, takes up the new role of Festival President this year and is therefore perfectly placed to extol her passion for local food and retailers. The 2012 event taking place in Malton’s historic Market Place will feature a two-day programme of celebrity chef demonstrations; over 100 prestige food stallholders, highlighting quality regional specialties and local seasonal produce; an expanded Beer, Wine and Cider Festival in the Milton Rooms; and an extended Welcome To Yorkshire Food Lovers Taste Trail around the town. There will also be a programme of ‘Masterclass’ tasting tutorials and book signings, an Army kitchen, street theatre and outdoor music – in fact everything for a great family weekend. Festival Organiser Tom Naylor-Leyland, said: “Now in our fourth year the Malton Food Lovers Festival is a real showcase for our spectacular chef line up, the best line up of any country food festival in the UK, and the top quality locally grown produce. We are proud to be known as Yorkshire’s Finest”. The Malton Food Lovers Festivals and Markets are organised by the Malton Amenity CIC, a Community Interest Company. Its principal sponsors are Fitzwilliam Malton Estate and the Earl Fitzwilliam Charitable Trust. www.maltonfoodfestival.co.uk Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th March

BUSINESS
Necessity is the Mother of invention, so start up your own business! by Malcolm Jones The Jones Partnership Accountants & Business Advisors
T
he recession is causing damage to people’s lives and finances and we have to learn to tighten our belts and explore ways in which we can get by. The choices facing us when we are without work can no longer be restricted to claiming benefits and attending numerous training courses, not all of which are likely to lead to a new job. Times are tough and we have to look to our own resources. The prospect of starting up a business appears daunting. The major barriers are generally seen to be:a) Overcoming the fear of taking a leap into the unknown. Just look around your area and note how many of the businesses are operated by their owners, who took the plunge years ago and started trading. Observe the liveried vans along the road driven by their owners supplying a host of services. Don’t forget, even Marks and Spencer started out from a market stall in Leeds!

b) The lack of readily available funds from the banks, central and local government and other agencies is a fact of life. I have known businesses that started up without funds and got off the ground and flourished due entirely to the owners hard work, passion and belief. So how do we get started? Firstly you must possess drive and determination to turn your idea, hobby or interest into something that other people will want to buy. There are no short cuts. If you don’t possess a computer to research the market for your idea or product, then pop down to the library. Starting a business can be lonely and therefore it is important that you seek the views and advice from other people about your idea, not just family and friends. Attend meetings held by business organizations; don’t be shy. We all have to start somewhere. 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

H
elmsley Arts Centre, the acclaimed North Yorkshire venue on the edge of the Moors, is announcing its first-ever Jazz ‘n’ Swing weekend in March. Programmed by internationally acclaimed jazz drummer John Petters, the weekend will bring together a unique combination of traditional jazz, swing and American songbook music played by some of the top jazz performers in the UK today.
