Whilst I’m writing this the sun is shining, my other half is digging in the garden (as makes him happy), the children have finished school for Easter and all is well with the world. It’s amazing the difference a bit of sun makes to how you feel. With all of the spending cuts this spring we are all worrying about our finances and what will happen in the months ahead. But hardest hit are our local charities who are really going to need our help so that they can carry on providing their valued service in our community. Ryedale Special Families (see page 54) provides a lifeline to families with disabled children. Please help them by supporting one of the events listed - or maybe hold your own event to raise funds for this very local and excellent charity. By the time this drops through your letterbox, Easter will be over but of course we will still have bank holidays galore to look forward to! More digging in our garden! In my other half’s defense the garden is like a bog when it rains and I wade through mud to get to the washing line - yet I’m not convinced that these trenches are the solution. Who am I to question! And in the meantime (which could be sometime) the garden has become somewhat perilous! The competition this month is to win a £25 voucher to spend on Lego at Ralph Yates and Sons who now stock a huge range. Test your powers of the ‘Force’ and spot Yoda in our adverts to win! The winner of the March competition was Erin Foxton of Malton. Well done!! Until next month...

Family Mediation for separating couples By Chris Myles, Director and Head of Family Law at Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors LLP

F

rom 6th April 2011 the Ministry of Justice has confirmed that Mediation Assessments prior to the issue of any relevant family proceedings is going to be required with very few exceptions. Is promotion of Mediation by the Government a positive solution to family problems or another attempt by the Government to save money? It is widely recognised by Lawyers, Mediators and the Courts that an agreement between the parties rather than one enforced by the Court is far more satisfactory and is more likely to last. The couple can feel that they have had greater involvement in the process. Mediation in itself is not a new concept although initial participation in Mediation was perhaps a

little slow to take off. In recent years Lawyers have increasingly encouraged couples to attend Mediation to resolve their family disputes whether in relation to financial matters or children cases and it is now clearly recognised as a positive alternative to resolving family disputes. Where the parting is not amicable and matters cannot be agreed, then mediation is a safe environment in which to explore issues in an impartial and practical way. It can help retain a channel of communication between the couple and it gives the opportunity of setting out your own agenda, You can retain control over the outcome and it can be less expensive both emotionally and financially than ending up in court. Under the new agreement between judges and the Ministry of Justice, separating couples who want to use the courts, will now have to consider mediation first. If mediation is not a

workable option, because one party refuses to take part in it for example, the case can proceed to court. The Court however is expected to consider returning cases back to Mediation if the parties have not properly considered Mediation as an option. As a trained Family Mediator and solicitor I have seen many Clients that have benefited from resolving their disputes through Mediation rather than through Court. Mediation can help families to reach agreement that is suited to their particular family needs rather than having general settlement terms imposed upon them by a third party. For more information on any aspect of family mediation please do not hesitate to contact Chris Myles at Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors on 01904 624185. More information and an online family law enquiry form can be found at www. crombiewilkinson.co.uk

Take positive action with family mediation If you are looking to separate or divorce, Family Mediation can help. Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors family mediators have the experience and expertise to empower you to make the decisions that will be right for you with regards to children, finances and property if you are separating or divorcing. Contact Chris Myles at Crombie Wilkinson Solicitors for an initial assessment meeting. Call 01904 624185 or visit www.crombiewilkinson.co.uk • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Kitchens for living

What makes a good-looking, functional kitchen? Careful planning is the answer - plus a little bit of lateral thinking… by Katherine Sorrell

T

hese days, kitchens aren’t just for cooking in, or even for eating; they’re for socialising, doing homework, painting, reading, chatting, catching up with the accounts, watching TV or simply hanging out. So how do you go about designing a space that really works for you? First, assess exactly what you need from the kitchen. The panel on the right will give you a good start. Next, do plenty of research – read everything about kitchens you can get your hands on, and visit every showroom within reach. Then, before you get bogged down with the detail, think about the space as a whole. If your kitchen is on the small size and you’re planning on investing in it, it might be worth, at this stage, considering either amalgamating it with an adjacent room or extending. If that’s not possible, can you enlarge a doorway or knock through a ‘hatch’ to give a feeling of extra space, and better sight lines to what’s going on elsewhere in the house? Perhaps you can create more room by moving the washing machine into the garage or under the stairs, or by fitting a fold-down dining table? Next: layout. Plan it with the utmost care to ensure that the room is easy to use and comfortable to be in. You don’t want to have to walk right across 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

the kitchen to put the crockery away, tripping over the dog and the child practising headstands on the way. In technical terms, experts recommend a ‘work triangle’ between the cooker, sink and fridge (in practice, this doesn’t always work, but aim to leave uninterrupted space between the areas you use more frequently). An island unit is great for maximising space, but needs to be well designed – within one step of the other worktops, not so deep that you can’t reach across it and, ideally, positioned so that the cook can see what else is going on in the room. In addition, room to cook in the way you want and enough cupboards and shelves to store everything tidily but accessibly are vital, while even seemingly small things matter a lot, like providing an area on which to dump shopping bags before unpacking, or ensuring that the bin is close to the chopping board. Ultimately, of course, what defines a really great kitchen is much more than a set of guidelines. Avoid fashion fads, invest in quality and do your planning but, above all, go with what feels right for you. Instinct, inspiration and imagination are the secret ingredients in this recipe, helping create a room that’s comfortable and functional, as well as homely, hospitable and heart-warming.

Designing your kitchen? Ask yourself these questions first… • Who will use the room,

how often, and how many at a time?

How will it be used - for regular family meals or the occasional microwave dinner? And what about other activities - homework, watching TV, doing the washing or ironing?

Do you like using high-tech appliances? What wiring and plug sockets will be required? Will you keep small appliances out on worktops, or hidden in cupboards?

How much storage do you need, and of what type? For cupboards, do you prefer solid or glass doors, or maybe lots of open shelves? Will you have some unfitted elements, such as a dresser or sideboard? Built-in or freestanding appliances?

What about worktops - wood, stainless steel, composite, stone or laminate? And flooring - ceramic or stone, brick, rubber, wood, cork, vinyl or lino? Collect as many samples as you can, and lay them out together to give an idea of the overall effect.

ears of experience make R&R builders the best option for those improvements that make your home a more spacious or comfortable place to live. If you’re going to have an extension or a conversion in your home, who better to do it for you than the local experts in high-quality building who have transformed hundreds of buildings of all shapes, sizes and ages? R&R builders have been busy recently installing a cosy logburning fireplace in a customer’s home, and constructing extensions and garden walls. They can even carry out complete installation of new kitchens and bathrooms. One of the more creative jobs they’ve completed lately is a stunning cedar wood-clad extension mounted on stilts over a bungalow. With fully qualified and accredited electricians and plumbers on the team, and trusted sub-contractors for back-up, R&R can plan and run

your project from start to finish, including the decorating. The company has built up a range of specialisms in the 20 years since it was set up by John Towse and Michael Caffrey. The customer care and honesty you’d expect from a family firm is allied with a huge collection of skills among its 20 staff, who include John’s own sons, Stephen and John Towse. In the on-site joiners’ workshop they can create bespoke windows, staircases and box windows to your specifications, which is great for when you want something a little bit different, or you’re in an older house with non-standard dimensions. Work on old buildings are another speciality, from pointing and roof repairs to full-scale conversions. Not only will R&R carry out the job to a high standard, they are also fully competent with older joinery, masonry, roofing and stonework methods, ensuring whatever they do fits perfectly with your home.

R&R are members of the Federation of Master Builders and the European Builders’ Confederation and Sovereignapproved contractors, and their electricians are accredited by the rigorous NAPIT. TRAVEL

Cappadocia Framed by the Taurus mountains to the south, the high plateau of Cappadocia lies in central Turkey, a land bristling with volcanic features, known as ‘fairy chimneys’, and carved with ancient underground cities and rock churches.

F

or early Christians and others who farmed the surrounding land, living underground was safe, cool in summer, warm in winter and whenever you needed extra space, you could just dig another room in the relatively soft stone. Stables were near the top, accessed down a ramp, while further down was a network of communal kitchens, sleeping quarters, stores, niches for oil lamps, wine cellars and chapels. The cities ran seven floors deep, often more, with air shafts, wells and millstones (complete with peepholes) which could block the tunnels in time of danger. Many such cities remain undiscovered but 36 have been identified, a few partially opened to visitors who file through narrow passageways, stooping right down at times with the occasional moment of panic but rarely a chance to turn back. The largest city is Kaymakli, the deepest Derinkuyu. Both are on the tourist trail. Meanwhile above ground,

nature has shaped the most fantastic fairyland, eroding the soft tufa layer left by eruptions to uncover tall columns of hard rock marching through the countryside like a giant army. Some, capped with basalt, look like overgrown mushrooms, others come to a point like pixies’ hats, many are pierced with the dark holes of troglodyte dwellings. Large or small, these so-called fairy chimneys come in twos or threes, or familysized groups, while here and there sculpted ridges cling to curving slopes the colour of cappuccino. At over 1000 metres, the little town of Ürgüp is a convenient place to stay, with its share of fairy chimneys, its rock-hewn houses turned into cave hotels and on the doorstep, a whole flotilla of hot air balloons offering the ride of a lifetime. Every morning, they rise above Red Valley, packed with wide-eyed tourists, gliding high above it all or dipping down for a close-up view. Back on land, the astonishing moonscape stretches as far as you can see, Pigeon Valley, Hunters Valley, Uchisar, and when you reach the best viewpoints, cameras clicking all around, you almost forget to browse the souvenir stalls brimming with pottery, turquoise and pashmina. But there is more to this land than caves and fairy chimneys.

28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Not so far away among the vineyards, the Göreme Open Air Museum preserves some of Cappadocia’s finest rock-cut monasteries and churches, dating back to the early days of Christianity. Footpaths and steps lead you from one chapel to the next where wall paintings and frescoes in earthy tones depict scenes from the New Testament, or St Theodore and St George slaying the dragon. Most decorations are from the 11th to 13th centuries but there are earlier examples. Carved into rock or cliff, every chapel has a story to tell. Sandals is named after mysterious footprints, the Dark Church was a pigeon house, and you find a Snake Church, home of the dragon, an Apple Church, once near an orchard, Santa Barbara, where red lines were drawn on the vault to imitate brick, and the beautifully restored Tokali, with gleaming lapis lazuli in its newer section. At the entrance to the complex, the Nunnery rises on several floors, church and cells cut into the towering rock and just like in the underground cities, connected by tunnels with millstone doors. Cappadocia is indeed like nowhere else in Turkey, equally stunning above and underground. By Solange Hando

Cars

Most profitable

Car companies turn over billions of pounds every year and bank millions in profits – but which cars are the most profitable?

It’s a question we’ve been pondering for some time. All car manufacturers can flog a car, but what makes the difference between a bumper profit margin and a tiny one? Well, we asked a host of industry experts, professors and insiders to help us come up with this list. They told us cutting costs and maximising returns in the automotive world is all about sharing expertise and platforms – do that and car manufacturers can dramatically increase their profits. Here are some of the cars that our experts believe are real cash cows for their makers. It’s the salesman’s milemuncher, but its premium price and relatively cheap production costs mark the 3-Series out as a winner for the marque. Our experts said it was mostly down to excellent cost control, the fact cars are often highly specified and usually sold for a premium over similar-sized cars like the Ford Mondeo.

McLaren MP4-12C

Ford Transit

It’s not just cars that add substantially to a manufacturer’s bottom lines – vans do too! The Ford Transit is sold in markets around the world and our experts believe it is one of the most profitable vehicles on sale in Europe. Low production costs and decent volumes help keep the cash flowing for the Blue Oval.

E

One of the shock cars to emerge from our research was the new McLaren. Although development costs are high, the actual car is relatively inexpensive to make in relation to the high retail price. Our experts said the carbon chassis could be the cheapest to produce ever while many physical components have been replaced by more cost-effective electronics. If they sell the numbers forecast at between £160-170k it could be one of the most profitable cars ever!

a huge array of Seat, Audi, Skoda and other VW models. Many are sold for a premium but cost no more to make, adding a healthy balance to VW’s bottom line every year.

BMW 3-Series

Range Rover Sport

The Range Rover Sport benefits from all factors that make a model profitable: It’s based on an existing chassis (Defender) which keeps build costs low. It’s sold for a premium with lots of added extras. And it’s been kept on sale for a long period of time without a major redesign. All these add up to a holy grail in terms of profitability.

VW Golf

Described by our experts as ‘the daddy’ of platform sharing, VW isn’t one of the most profitable makers without good reason! The Golf is responsible for two million units a year and currently provides underpinnings for 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Changes to Self Employed NIC (‘stamp’) payments.

by Andrew Walker, White Kite Chartered Accountants

If you are self employed you will have got used to paying your Class 2 NIC payments by monthly direct debit or by quarterly bill from the Tax Office. This year will see some changes to this arrangement.

Simplification? HMRC believe the payment of NIC should be aligned with the Income Tax payments in July and January each year. What this means is that no direct debits will be collected from April to July 2011 and monthly collections will then restart again in August 2011. This year is the only year that there will be a gap in payments. HMRC will no longer issue quarterly bills but

will issue two bills each year, in October and April, for the NIC due.

notifications in the quarter to 5 April - Use P46 Car.

The option to pay quarterly is no longer available but there is now the additional option to pay your Class 2 NIC electronically by two payments in July and January. For the year 2011/12 this will be payments of £65 in both January and July 2012.

Deadline for Employers’ 2010/11 end of year PAYE Returns.

Could this be the start of the possible merging of NIC and Income Tax that was announced in the recent Budget? Watch this space.

How to

Make Cash in your spare time It’s always nice to have a bit of extra cash set aside each month for savings, emergencies, or just a little treat now and then. Here, we’ve listed eight easy ways to put some money back in your pocket, without doing overtime.

Ebay Start by selling any unnecessary clutter around the house, then see if any neighbours or friends have anything which they don’t need and offer to list it for them for a small commission. If you don’t mind doing the leg work, you could be on to a nice little earner whilst helping your friends out too!

Hobbies Do you make great cakes? Enjoy crafting your own greetings cards? Have a passion for photography? You can make money by hiring out your services. Birthday cakes, wedding invitations and family portraits can be a great way to do what you love and get paid for it.

Mystery shopping Shopping in disguise and providing feedback on the quality of service and customer care of retailers is a great way to earn vouchers, discounts or cash.

Babysitting It’s not just a job for teenagers. Get paid to sit in somebody’s house and watch television, read or surf the net and earn around £8 an hour, which can mount up on dates like Valentine’s Day and New Year’s Eve. Houses and pets need sitting too when their owners are on holiday, so there’s plenty of demand!

Party planning There are lots of companies who need representatives to host parties which endorse their products, such as Pampered Chef and 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Ann Summers (not for the faint hearted!). Check there isn’t already a representative in your area when you enquire.

Count votes Register with your council’s election office and earn a nice sum when the next election comes around.

Life modelling Feeling brave? If you don’t mind standing still in your birthday suit for an hour or so, this is a great way of increasing your bank balance and your confidence! Sign up to a reputable agency and enquire at local art colleges. All shapes and sizes are welcome, all you need is the ability to hold a pose.

Get online Blogging, reviewing or becoming an online researcher can bring in the pennies, which soon mount up. If you’re into photography, many sites will take photographs and you’ll receive royalties each time they are used.

Hands on help for your back Back pain doesn’t have to be one of those things that you just have to put up with.

E

ven if you’ve tried every remedy you can think of, when you injure your back or it simply starts playing up, you could be in need of some professional helping hands. Working with a qualified physiotherapist allows you to explore lots of extra options to ease your back pain, neck pain or sports injuries. Taking responsibility for your own health often means seeking professional advice – and being prepared to work with them and follow their advice to help your own rehabilitation and recovery. Ed Jowitt, who has run and manned Ryedale Physiotherapy Clinic for 13 years, has a wealth of tricks up his sleeve that could have you back up and running sooner than expected. A lot of cases he treats are the result of those occasions when the back ‘just goes’ after the patient has lifted something heavy, moved awkwardly, fallen or tripped. Repetitive work, static or bad posture and mattresses more than eight years old can also create back pain. Ed said: “Our bodies are actually very good at dealing

with everyday problems.” “Back pain often arises when you do something a bit unusual or awkward and the back muscles go into spasms to try and help it. It’s a protective measure the body takes automatically – unfortunately the result is pain and a lack of movement.” Ed’s experience and a patient-focused approach will help put you at ease as soon as you walk through the clinic door. A course of treatment begins with a consultation when he’ll ask you to describe what you’re experiencing, investigate the history of your problem and carry out some simple tests. Then Ed will make his suggestions as to how he can help you – and how you can help yourself. Patients remain involved in their own treatment throughout every session, and Ed says the best work is done through effective collaboration between himself and the patient.

He said: “A typical course of treatment for back pain involves a blend of handson therapy which involves massage, stretching and mobilisation to encourage the joints. Often I’ll recommend some regular exercises for patients to do at home. “Once the treatment is finished, we can discuss lifestyle changes that will help prevent any future problems. It may be that you need to continue the exercises I’ve provided, or take up an exercise class like yoga or Pilates.” Physiotherapy is so beneficial, a number of patients return to Ryedale Physiotherapy Clinic for follow-up ‘maintenance’ treatments with Ed. Whatever the problem, help is quite literally at hand. To find out more about how physiotherapy could help you, give Ed a call on 01653 690808 or visit him at 18a Market Place, Malton.

Get your skin ready for summer

A

t last! The weather has warmed up and we can shed our winter layers and expose our bodies to the fresh air. Only, all these winter months with no natural light and under layers of clothes may have left your skin looking dull and dry. This needs more than a quick rub of body lotion. First of all, you do need to exfoliate. Your body sheds skin cells all the time, but without some friction to remove them, many dead cells will just cling to the surface. Body scrubs are aplenty in your nearest chemist or supermarket, along with body brushes. Allow yourself a good 10 to 15 minutes in the shower or for even better results book yourself in with your beautician. 40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

On the subject of beauticians, as you move down your body it definitely becomes easier and more efficient to ask someone else help with the skin maintenance. You can shave the hair off your legs, but it’ll be much smoother – and last longer – if you wax, particularly if someone else is doing it for you and has a better view of what needs doing. Likewise with your feet; unless you are a contortionist, a home pedicure is always going to be a tedious and back-aching job. Having prepared the surface, a good moisturiser will not only make your skin glow, but will immediately make you feel more summery. If you are naturally very pale, buy a body lotion that has also offers a light self-tanning ingredient.

Give your dog something to wag about!

M

any people would love to have a dog, but don’t feel they can fit one into their lifestyle. Modern working hours mean a pet could easily be left alone for too long, and even holidays in the UK are restricted with a pet in tow. Besides, it’s challenging to give a dog the stability and care it needs, when life is demanding and often unpredictable. WagAbout owner Jenny Tobin knows this very well. She’s been devoted to dogs since childhood, and she has always tried to organise her life around having at least one dog at any one time.

However, working away a lot threw up difficulties, and a period of illness meant ensuring the dogs were cared for became a real challenge. But Jenny realised she wasn’t alone; dog owners need to be able to live and work with complete peace of mind – and so WagAbout was born! When you’re stuck in the office until late in the evening, Jenny can make sure your dog is

walked, fed and cuddled. If you’ve got to go away and kennels are not an option, she can stay at your home so your dog is never left alone for long. She’ll even bring in the milk, newspapers and post, put your bins out and stock up on a little shopping, if you so wish.

restaurant or just have a few dog-free hours, Jenny can take your dog on an outing of its own and enable you to do that. Happy Dog : Happy Owner, contact WagAbout for peace of mind for your dog and you.

Or you can send your dog to Jenny’s country cottage for the day – she’ll have facilities to take dogs in for longer periods by this summer – where it will be cared for in the company of her own three dogs, Jack, Monty and Fly. It could mean a new lease of life neither you nor your dog ever expected. Jenny said: “I’ll often send a picture by text to a dog’s owner while it’s with me, to show how we’re getting on. One lady who brought her dog to me mentioned he never enjoyed getting wet, under any circumstances.

Professional Dog Walking & Care Service

“But later in the day I sent her a text of her dog, happily playing in the stream with my three. I think he changed his mind about water when he saw how much fun it could be!”

DOG SITTING

WagAbout can help with most situations that make caring for a dog awkward. Heavy snowfall can threaten trips to the vet – but Jenny’s sturdy vehicle, confidence in all weathers and safe pet crate add up to a reliable canine taxi service. And finally, if you’re on holiday with your dog in North or East Yorkshire, and you’d like to visit a stately home, eat in a

Does your pet have pets? - Know your parasites!

A

parasite is an organism that takes it’s nourishment from another organism. Worms are an example of an endoparasite that live within the host, and fleas are an example of an ectoparasite that live on the host. Some parasites can be life threatening to both animal and human, however most can be prevented or treated by using flea and worm treatments on a regular basis.

The products Rear guard and f10 spray can be applied to the skin and act as a repellant and the later also has antibacterial properties.

Fleas and ticks are often

Roundworm look like

seen but people are not always aware that ticks can carry diseases such as lymes disease and pets can become affected via a tick bite. Fleas are known as a hyperparasite meaning that they carry another parasite within them, in this case, the tapeworm. If your pet ingests a flea through grooming or eating a rodent with fleas it can get tapeworm. Some pets suffer with a flea allergic dermatitis which can be controlled if the fleas are eliminated. Using frontline every 5 weeks for cats and 8 weeks in dogs will keep your pets free from ticks, fleas and biting lice. During the summer in areas with a high tick population use frontline every month to kill ticks.

Myosis (fly strike) mainly

affects rabbits who are not cleaned out regularly this attracts flies to lay their eggs on the rabbit which hatch into maggots and eat away at the flesh. However it can affect any animal that cannot clean itself properly. The maggots multiply very quickly and can kill the rabbit by the time the owner notices the rabbit is unwell. In order to prevent this owners should be clean the hutch regularly and check the rabbits bottom is clean on a daily basis. 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Ear Mites affect some animals and cause a thick black wax to form in the ears, they are very itchy and the animal will scratch at its ears and shake its head a lot. Using Stronghold or Advocate spot ons every month will treat ear mites.

spaghetti and if allowed to multiply they can cause an intestinal blockage leading to constipation and possibly death. These can also be passed to humans and cause blindness.

Hookworms are small thin

parasites that penetrate the skin via through contaminated soil then fasten to the intestine and suck blood. These can cause a dermatitis in humans.

Whipworms are not visible to the naked eye and are hardest to treat. Symptoms include heavy diarrhoea, flatulence, weight loss, fatigue and poor condition.

Tapeworm are long, flat and

their slime can become infected with lungworm as they carry the parasite. Dogs then spread the parasite in their faeces. Lungworm can be prevented by using advocate spot on every month. Milbemax treats Roundworm, hookworms, tapeworm and can prevent heartworm ( a disease transmitted by mosquitoes seen on continental Europe). For cats that are difficult to give tablets, a spot on preparation is available called Profender. Worming is recommended every month up to 6 months of age then at three monthly intervals thereafter to ensure regular treatment. However it is worth noting that apart most wormers will just clear out the worms that are present in the animal at the time of treatment therefore if it then goes on to eat a rodent or faeces that is carrying the parasite they will become reinfected. In animals that hunt regularly, monthly worming may be advisable as the worm cycle take a month to complete so your pet will stay worm free.

...some confidence building new homes for some of our shy residents. Andrina & Arista are two young sisters who are in need of such a home. Born to a feral mum they were placed with a fosterer to begin socialisation. At five months old they were brought to us along with their two sisters, Adella & Atina. It was a nervous start for all the girls and they kept tight to their beds and remained hidden under blankets. After further socialisation by staff and dedicated volunteers the girls started to come out of their shells and Adella & Atina found themselves new homes. Andrina & Arista are still looking for their new home where they can live together and gain more confidence. Arista is the more confident of the two and loves playing with her toy mouse but both will demand attention when food is around! A lady who certainly doesn’t require confidence building is Ellie. Ellie is now our longest stay cat and is getting rather fed up of adoption centre life. She’s a chunky lady full of personality who would be great with a new owner who likes a cat with character. If you think you could offer our shy girls, Ellie or any of our other cats a new home, please contact the adoption centre on 01904 760356. York CP would also like to thank the readers of the HandyMag for their interest in cats we have featured in the past. We are happy to report both Freya and Poppy have found themselves new homes.

Gardening

May W

It’s great to be joining you on a regular basis, especially when the subject is gardening! I’ll be giving you some hints and tips for what to be doing in your own gardens, letting you know what I’m up to in mine, and in the process hopefully inspiring you to get out in to the garden more, enjoy everything it has to offer, and achieve some pretty impressive results yourself.

elcome to May, one of the fastest moving months in the gardening year. May is the month when plants just keep on and on growing and developing. New transplants, recently allowed to enjoy the ‘great outdoors’ after an early start in a greenhouse, wait a week or two and then POW! they’re off, and showing you their potential. Old established garden friends, their roots well down in the soil, put on new leaves, stem growth, flower buds maybe even flowers and enjoy the fact that whilst the weather has warmed up, they’ve not yet been hit by growthrestricting drier conditions of summer. It’s a month when it is hard not to feel a regular desire to grab a trowel (or perhaps a fork, spade or cultivator) and get out there and enjoy yourself while at the same time giving the garden and its plants the TLC that’s deserved. What better way to spend an hour or two….or perhaps even a day or two? With the massive surge in interest in growing your own vegetables, vegetable plants and seeds are available just about everywhere, so there are no excuses for not giving 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

it a go. Even if time is short or space at a premium, it really is worth growing a few crops – the feeling of self-satisfaction when you make that first harvest is just SO good....not to mention the taste of the crops themselves. At this time of year you can sow seeds of many vegetables direct into the soil or large pots of multi-purpose compost. Try your hand at climbing French beans, dwarf French beans, runner beans, carrots, salad leaves, spinach or peas. I also adore home grown sweetcorn; this too can be sown direct now, but make sure you sow the seed in a square e.g. four rows of four seeds, formed in to a square (it is a wind pollinated crop and this is the way to get good, well-filled cobs). It is a bit late to raise your own courgettes, squash, tomatoes or peppers from seed, but there should be plenty of young plants available in local nurseries or garden centres – just make sure you buy a variety of tomato or pepper suitable for growing outdoors if you don’t have a greenhouse (the label should make this clear). It is worth spending a few minutes to check flower beds and borders, however small or

large, as at this time of year they are a hive of activity. I just have masses of twiggy pea-sticks (well branched prunings will do) and have driven them in around the edges of several herbaceous perennials. So many of these lovely plants are inclined to flop disastrously later in the year, but supported subtly now, they’ll remain upright. As I do this I always spot a few other things that need seeing to as well. All the lovely lush growth means that (in my garden at least) slugs and snails are having a fantastic time devastating the tender new leaves. When I put new plants in the ground I scatter oyster shell around the soil beneath the plants. It is readily available from local suppliers of chicken feed, and is by far the best barrier to slugs and snails that I know....and bought in this way, it does not cost a fortune either. Early aphid (greenfly and blackfly) infestations are also likely to be building up now, and dealt with promptly they are unlikely to cause too much damage – a gentle but firm squash between finger and thumb works a treat, or for those less partial to direct action like

Golden Rules: •

Make sure that seedlings and young plants get enough natural light.

Gradually harden off young plants before planting them out.

In warmer areas, start to plant out more tender crops, but protect with cloches at first.

Tomatoes in containers need regular feeding with a liquid tomato food.

Treat yourself to some summer bedding for a really lively terrace-container, but check the forecast carefully before planting them out.

COMMUNITY

A special local charity is in need of your help

A

charity founded in a living room is now turning to the community to help it carry on providing a lifeline to families with disabled children. Ryedale Special Families offers a unique range of services to people in Ryedale who are bringing up children with disabilities. The charity has now grown from a small group of parents who, 20 years ago, shared a need for extra facilities in their local area, to a busy organisation with 25 part-time staff. Its incredible success story is a model for other start-up charities across the country, who often call on Ryedale Special Families for advice. However, the credit crunch followed by the recession and public sector cuts means it now needs local people to join in with fundraising activities, to ensure disabled children and their families across Ryedale continue to receive support. The charity enjoys finding ways to have fun while raising funds – a ‘Zumbathon’ recently attracted 110 people who wiggled their way to making £2,700 for the charity, and a 146-mile cycle trip around the new Yorkshire Wolds cycle route is scheduled for July. Individuals, families and groups are all welcome to sign up.

One of the main benefits users of Ryedale Special Families receive is a friendly welcome and a network of support from other families who understand all the joys and the difficulties of bringing up children with special needs. Chief officer David Brewster said: “We recently had an excellent day out at East Barnby Outdoor Education Centre, with nearly 70 people enjoying tobogganing, canoeing and a climbing wall. The laughter and smiles on people’s faces was tremendous, but there was also a lot of serious discussion going on about very real challenges.” Special needs often means very varied needs, and Ryedale Special Families caters for a great deal of them. From a simple break for parents to days out in huge groups, or support for dealing with schools to help with tribunals, the charity is always giving a little bit extra. David said: “For example, we don’t want anyone to be excluded from an event simply because they don’t have a car, so we’ll send a minibus to pick people up from wherever they are. In Ryedale, going the extra mile can quite literally mean going an extra mile!”

FOOD

Pasta with spring vegetables and lemon cream sauce

M

01904 468777

ake the most our wonderful local asparagus in this simple recipe for pasta and spring vegetables (I buy it from Sand Hutton Asparagus at Low Moor Farm). It’s best to use wide ribbons of pasta like fettuccine or tripoline to make the most of the sauce. You can if you prefer a lighter version, leave out the sauce and just toss the vegetables with some melted butter and olive oil. Frozen peas and broad beans are fine.

Ingredients (serves 4)

400g pasta 200g fresh asparagus 200g peas 200g broad beans 4 large handfuls of fresh spinach leaves

For the sauce

250ml double cream Juice and zest of 1 large lemon 1 tbsp each of finely chopped mint, chives and basil Grated Parmesan cheese to serve 1. Mix all the ingredients for the sauce in a large pan and season to taste with salt and black pepper. . Blanch the peas in salted boiling water until they are just cooked, drain and keep to one side in a bowl. 3. Blanch the broad beans for 2 or 3 minutes until tender, drain and refresh with cold water to cool them down. Gently remove the beans from their skins although this isn’t essential it does improve the appearance of the dish. Reserve with the peas. . Wash the asparagus and snap off the bottom of the stalks. Cut off the top 2” of the tip and then slice on the diagonal. Blanch until tender, 2 – 3 minutes, then add the spinach leaves. 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The spinach will wilt immediately, drain and add to the peas and broad beans. 5. Cook the pasta in a large saucepan of salted water following the pack timings. . When the pasta is cooked, drain it quickly and return to the pan with a little of the cooking water (alternatively, take out about a cup of water before you drain it). Add the vegetables and the lemon cream sauce and gently toss until combined. Cook gently for a minute or two to heat through. 7. Serve with grated Parmesan cheese. 8. To make a more substantial meal serve it with chopped chunks of pan fried chicken breast or cubes of bacon.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Walt Disney Pictures and producer Jerry Bruckheimer present the fourth instalment in the swashbuckling Pirates of The Caribbean saga, with Johnny Depp returning as Captain Jack Sparrow on an all-new adventure.

Priest PRIEST, a post-apocalyptic sci fi thriller, is set in an alternate world -- one ravaged by centuries of war between man and vampires. The story revolves around a legendary Warrior Priest (Paul Bettany) from the last Vampire War who now lives in obscurity among the other downtrodden human inhabitants in walled-in dystopian cities ruled by the Church. When his niece (Lily Collins) is abducted by a murderous pack of vampires, Priest breaks his sacred vows to venture out on an obsessive quest to find her before they turn her into one of them. He is joined on his crusade by his niece’s boyfriend (Cam Gigandet), a trigger-fingered young wasteland sheriff, and a former Warrior Priestess (Maggie Q) who possesses otherworldly fighting skills.

X-Men: First Class Following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga, before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known. In the process, a rift between them opened, which began the eternal war between Magneto’s Brotherhood and Professor X’s X-Men. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 57

Derwent Diggers

Strictly Come Gardening

T

he Diggers have been wrestling with various ideas for revitalising the Best Kept Garden competition for 2011. As you drive around the Malton, Norton and the surrounding villages there are lots of really colourful and attractive displays to be seen in residents’ gardens and on business and public premises. They are a tribute to the efforts of the people who create them, who clearly get pleasure and satisfaction from doing so. But they also lift the spirits of those who pass by and make our locality a more attractive place to live in or to visit. This years event will be

a Community Gardening competition called “Strictly Come Gardening”. The aim is to attract as many as possible to join in so that we can compile a portfolio of photographs that will be put on display in September to celebrate the enthusiasm and skill and pleasure that local gardens embody. Entry forms will be available at Yates’s Garden shop, The Tourist Information Centre and Dickens of a Deli in Malton marketplace. Entry is free with a closing date of Saturday 2nd July. Judges will visit to view gardens in mid-July. Modest prizes will be awarded in each

of the following categories: • Most attractive front garden • Most attractive back garden • Most attractive courtyard garden • Most attractive business/ hotel/pub display • Most attractive Hanging Basket or Patio Pot Derwent Diggers hope that this event will prompt many more residents in the area to join in and show what they can do with their gardens - whatever the size or shape.
