elcome to the May edition! With longer days and better weather, there is so much more to do in May from gardening to DIY to having a bite to eat in your local pub. We are so lucky in this part of Yorkshire to have such a huge range of foodie businesses to choose from and May is a great month for sampling local food and drink. Our small independent suppliers are passionate about what they do so if you are in any doubt about what you can do with their ingredients, my advice would be to go and talk to them. They are always full of advice on the best way to enjoy local produce. One of the best places to do this is at local festivals and markets, where you can see (and sometimes even sample) their food and chat direct with business owners. The Malton Food Lovers Festival has a star line-up with Prue Leith, Levi Roots, Valentine Warner and more all heading to Malton this year. It will be a great place to rediscover our foodie roots. This year at the Festival, the Handy Mag team are sponsoring the treasure trail with Yorkshire puds to be found around town and a great prize for the winner. We are also on hand over the weekend running our Festival Selfie competition! Come and say hello to us. It is what we love best about running our magazines – meeting our readers and other businesses and hearing about what you get up to in the area. May also brings a cycling frenzy back to Yorkshire with the Tour de Yorkshire through a large part of our area from 1st to 3rd May. On Days 1 and 2, the Tour will travel through the Handy Mag distribution area. Why not get out on the route to cheer on the peloton? Well done to Rachael Medley (Norton) and Miss Baxter (Nunnington) for winning our February and March competitions. Until next month…

SUPER SLINGSBY SCARECROWS SATURDAY 2 MAY TO MONDAY 4 MAY 2015 Characters from children’s cartoons and movie heroes stole the show last year, while making it one of the most successful weekends to date for this local scarecrow festival.

The Slingsby Scarecrow Trail, takes place over the May Day Bank Holiday Weekend. Slingsby, which lies six miles west of Malton is famous for its annual Scarecrow Weekend which includes an exciting Scarecrow Trail. An imaginative display of scarecrows will be on show around the village, helping raise funds for the Friends of Slingsby School.

With over 31 entries from pupils, families and villagers, an impressive £611 was raised. So why not head over to the pretty village of Slingsby, for a lovely day out and vote for your favourite scarecrow? We can’t guarantee that the sun will be shining, but we can guarantee that you will see a fine display of community hard work and effort along with an abundance of straw! This year’s event starts at 12 noon on Saturday, 2nd May and ends

around 5pm on Monday, 4th May. Trails are just £2 from Robin Hood Caravan Park, in Tony’s Village Shop and at Slingsby School Reading Rooms. Friends of Slingsby School (FOSS) will be serving refreshments and light snacks in the Reading Rooms on Saturday and Sunday and will then hold a bottle stall on the Monday.

A WINDOW TO THE PAST – AND FUTURE

I

t has to be one of the biggest challenges for a museum: how best to display their often vast and varied collections; the next one how to get people out to come and see the exhibitions. Malton Museum on Yorkersgate has been very busy working on these conundrums. As they make their final preparations for their involvement in Malton Food Festival, they are also hard at work beginning to put a 3 year plan into action. They can do this now, with some confidence, having just been awarded close to £100,000 (£87,775 to be exact) by Arts Council England. Naturally their plans are ambitious.

Their plans are to employ someone to build up their audiences, build up their volunteer work force and build up their fundraising skills. No mean task. The grant will also fund a brand new exhibition for 2016, telling the story of Malton as an historic market town, from Roman times to present day unrivalled Yorkshire food capital.

the world wars. But it is also worth putting your nose through the museum door as the country celebrates the 800th anniversary of the signing of the Magna Carta. Come and find out about the part played by the town’s own Eustace de Vescy, Lord of the Manor of Malton. So back to their plans for the food festival...On May 23rd and 24th, Malton Museum, along with the Woodhams-Stone Collection, The Dickens Society and Castle Gardens, will be putting on a proper spread with a heritage food table in the Community Kitchen in Finkle Street. Come and sample the delights and watch the demonstrations of food and drink with a heritage twist. Also on the same weekend the Museum has a visiting exhibition from Kirkleatham called Saxon Princess, featuring jewellery from the burial and in the summer will be running workshops for children linked to the Saxon theme. www.maltonmuseum.co.uk

Windows to the Past 2 is the museum’s current exhibition, on at the Subscription Rooms on Yorkersgate. Keeping the foodie theme going, it includes aspects of kitchen ware and food preparation from Roman times to the years between

KITCHEN & BEDROOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we

wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 25 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source

ANNIVERSARY SALE UPTO 50% OFF just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big

investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the

EMILY... ON VOTING

It is safe to say election fever is upon us, as the 7th May draws ever closer the likes of David Cameron and Ed Miliband occupy the space of every newspaper and news channel as they try to win over the last few undecided voters. As they debate issues such as the economy and health care, it is all too easy for younger voters such as myself to be turned off at the thought of politics, thinking the issues simply don’t apply to our lives. However, this could not be further from the truth. As cliché as it may sound, younger voters are the future and thus their ballot is often the most important. Personally, as a bit of a politics nerd, turning 18 was an exciting time for me because I knew that I could finally cast my vote in an election. Whilst young people can be politically active, it is often startling the vast numbers that don’t turn out to vote on election day. It is too easy to think that our votes won’t make a difference and that turning out to vote is a waste of time and effort. This negative mind-set is not one present just in young people, but felt by many in society. The fanfare of Westminster can sometimes feel a million miles away from our little Yorkshire towns and villages. But, we all attend the doctor’s surgeries. We all drive on government-owned roads. Schools, colleges and libraries are all government institutions. Public transport is a vital part of our lives in the UK. These are all affected by the way we choose to vote. So if you want change, or even if you want things to stay the same, then taking a few minutes out of your day on May 7th is the easiest way to do it. After all, you only get one and it would be a shame to waste it. Emily 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

FUNERAL SERVICES Whether it is a traditional, contemporary, religious or humanist funeral, Fergus can arrange the farewell you wish for your loved ones. Fergus Court Funeral Services has the facilities to meet families and arrange the funeral of your choice, as well as having a private chapel of rest.

etting up a brand new business then buying a second business, would keep anyone on their toes; undertaking these challenges in less than 18 months - an even more remarkable feat. But it’s all in a day’s work for Fergus Court. Oh yes, and he fitted in a wedding too – his own! Since establishing Fergus Court Funeral Services in January 2014 and taking on premises at Butcher’s Corner in Malton, business has boomed. ‘Everything has gone better than I could ever have dreamt of’, says Fergus. ‘My family have supported me throughout, and getting married last year certainly made it a busy year.’ Last month Fergus Court Funeral Services acquired Ken Thompson Funeral Directors in Pickering. Dawn Inman of Ken Thompson Funeral Directors continues to work in the new business. Fergus explains: ‘When Dawn Inman contacted me and asked if I was interested in taking the business over, I jumped at the chance, and we concluded the deal on 1st April. Dawn agreed to remain working part time in the business and we are enjoying working together. As independent funeral directors we are both passionate about what we do and how we do it. We both have a desire to help families in their time of need.’

Fergus Court Funeral Services is open from 10am until 3pm Monday to Friday (unless conducting a funeral). Appointments can be made outside of these hours, during evenings and weekends. Ken Thompson Funeral Directors in Pickering is unmanned but Fergus is available anytime on 01751 472850 as well as the numbers below.

‘Fergus, thank you for your great kindness and for looking after Mum so beautifully, best regards C & N’ ‘Thank you for your very professional services during our sad loss’ KC ‘I should like to thankyou for your superb attention throughout the arrangements for Mum’s funeral. From our earliest contact, you have shown great sensitivity and professionalism and flexibility’ JT ‘Thank you for your help, kindness and consideration shown to us whilst making arrangements and the thoughtfulness shown to my parents and family on the day’ LS

Fergus Court Funeral Services will continue the legacy that Ken Thompson and his family started in Pickering. The Pickering business will keep the Thompson premises (and its name for the foreseeable future), as well as running the Malton office. They will continue to offer a first class, affordable and personal service. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 31

A CRY FOR HELP

Established 2003

Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church

There was a proud commander in the king’s army who was valiant, highly regarded and had many victories on the battlefield. However, he had an incurable skin disease but was told by his servant about a man who could cure him in a foreign country. Full of renewed hope, the commander went to his king and was granted permission to go and to seek healing. He even sent a letter of introduction and a request for healing on his behalf, but when the foreign king received the letter he thought it was a trick, he was angry and tore his clothes in frustration. The king couldn’t heal the commander but he knew a man who could. To his surprise, when the commander arrived at the man’s house, he sent a messenger with instructions; ‘Go, wash yourself seven times in the Jordan, and your skin will be restored and you will be cleansed’. The commander was furious, ‘he didn’t even come out and meet me’, he complained. ‘Surely, he should come and stand with me, pray and at least wave his hands over the spot to cure me?’ ‘Why should I get in a dirty river?’ This was not the way the commander of the king’s army should be treated in a foreign land, he thought, and ‘don’t they know who I am?’ The commander’s pride was getting in the way. It was his own servant who helped him to see sense, ‘if the man had told you to do something great, would you have done it? So why won’t you go and wash and be healed in the Jordan?’ So the commander went down to the Jordan and washed seven times and he was healed. It isn’t easy to ask for help but there are many people, organisations, churches, even God who might answer a cry for help if we will humble ourselves and ask.

I know it’s sad, but I do feel a sense of pride when I stand back and see the freshly mowed lawn. I’m not a gardener, but I do appreciate a well kept garden and love the sense of achievement when it all looks tidy. I get an even greater sense of pride when my children do well; when they pass exams, help a friend or persevere against the odds. A sense of pride can be very satisfying and a real motivator when having to do those jobs we never like doing, but a sense of pride can also be harmful.

We can also assess your diet and patterns of eating to allocate your risk level of dental decay, there are even test kits which can measure the presence of bacteria that cause dental decay and gum disease. Other things we can measure are your susceptibility to gum disease, erosion and tooth wear. Your dentist may ask to a lot more questions than they used to 5 years ago. This is because they are assessing your individual risk for further dental disease. Once they have assessed your risk they can then tailor advice to that risk and give you specific information on reducing your need for further dental treatment. This is what we mean by Preventative Dentistry, the good news is you’re never too old to benefit from this advice in fact is particularly the young and the old amongst us who can benefit the most. The young can develop good habits for life and, as we age, your mouth may alter so what worked for you in your middle age now puts you at increased risk of problems. For a thorough examination and individually tailored dental advice please call Georgina...

The Bluebell Wood By The Pastoral Poet

Spring! The bringer of good cheer, Has ousted Winter’s morbid drear, And clothed the erstwhile naked gladeAnd here the bluebells on parade. A sapphire swathe, a windless sea, Beneath a spreading canopy Of lofty elms and frowning pines, Where ring-doves coo to concubines. This place where sunlight sneaked a way, To make the shadows dance and play. And here upon the woodland floor, Where bareness dwelt a month before; A sight to gladden saddened eyes, A blue surpassing azure skies; Illuminates the woodland way In iridescent disarray.

07508802138 As the counsellor I help the client feel safe and supported, so that together we can explore their secservices.ruralrwise@gmail.com issues at depth, from differing perspectives. I work CLINICAL from the humanistic principle that each of us has the HYPNOTHERAPIST resources to live in a fulfilling way; through counselling we address what is making that difficult to achieve.

Common examples of issues that people bring to counselling include: anxiety, grief, depression, obsessions, fears, addictive behaviour, anger, trauma and abuse, stress, challenging decisions, difficulties in relationships and significant life changes. Typically my clients say that after counselling they feel better able to manage their feelings, trust their own judgement, speak their truth in relationships, have greater clarity about their choices and take action. The coaching I offer is focussed on helping clients achieve everything they can in their work. My coaching clients include entrepreneurs who are running their own businesses and want to talk about concerns such as: developing a clear plan for their business, sorting out their business priorities, setting realistic goals and targets, increasing their self-confidence when dealing with customers and employees and keeping some time for their personal and family life. Walking Tall with Ryedale Foot Care’s Nick Clark, fully trained Foot Health Practitioner (MCFHP; MAFHP).

A

fully trained Foot Health Practitioner, Nick Clark knows how painful feet can make you feel miserable. Nick treats a wide range of foot problems from hard skin removal and nail trimming to corn removal, verucca treatment and ingrown toe nails. He can also help treat foot problems associated with diabetes. Putting up with discomfort, aggravation and pain in your feet should be a thing of the past as today there are so many treatments available. Passionate about his work, Nick knows what it is to live day-to-day with uncomfortable feet. Training as a foot health practitioner in 2013, Nick was born in Newport, South Wales but brought up in Cape Town, South Africa from the age of 10. Having lived in the area for well over 20 years, he is building up a solid base of clients. You may well have seen Nick on his rounds: he is a familiar sight to many of you, having been a local postie. Serving Malton, Norton and surrounding villages, Nick is able to visit you in the comfort of your own home. He likes nothing more than meeting new people and understands the trusted position he’s in, every time a new front door is opened to him. Nick does not have a typical day. He says: “Each and every case is unique. That is the challenge and reward of my profession. But most importantly, I understand how a bit of compassion can go a long way when it comes to foot discomfort.” So walk a little taller: put your foot down - stop the pain in your feet.

Tour de Yorkshire at Dalby – a day out for everyone Dalby Forest is readying itself for the most exciting sporting event to come to the region in 2015 and one of the biggest cycle gatherings in the UK. The world-status cycle race visits Dalby on day one, Friday 1 May, meaning a grueling challenge to riders and a perfect day out for spectators. The field of world class riders will want to come out on top of the first points section of stage one. Located at Bickley Bank this is the chance to claim King of the Mountain glory and set down a marker for the whole tour.

The best views and fun for all

Dalby boasts four ideal viewing areas including: • Cote de Dalby: King of the Mountains, Bickley Bank (including a bike park). • Adderstone Field: Parking for up to 1000 cars, a climbing wall and a large screen showing the race. • Staindale: Cyclists have to navigate a tight hairpin corner and pass by Staindale Lake’s beautiful conservation area. • Haygate: A perfect setting to catch the cyclists as they navigate from Low Dalby passing Haygate before they leave the forest.

A family-friendly Yorkshire welcome The Tour de Yorkshire at Dalby will be a real family affair and offers a safe venue for kids to watch elite professionals and get caught up in the excitement of a live race. Special events and facilities on the day: • The Forestry Commission is reducing vehicle entry to the forest to only £4.00 per car. • Visitors by car will also receive a free return visit voucher to be used later in 2015. • Dalby Activity Centre will be open for Yorkshirethemed paint ball targets and refreshments. • Events and facilities at Adderstone Field and a bike bank at Bickley Bank for the day. • The courtyard café and Forest Café at the visitor centre, Low Dalby will serve up Yorkshire specialities to add a local flavour to the day.

Tour de Dalby Sportive

offering a unique chance to ride a section of the Tour de Yorkshire route in Dalby Forest – just hours before the competitors themselves pass through. Sportives are a great way to get into organised cycling events, giving riders the chance to complete a fully signed, timed and supported ride in a relaxed environment. There’s no need to feel intimidated as Sportives are primarily fun, non-competitive days out on your bike with like-minded people. Sportive Event features: • Entry fee is £10 per adult, kids £5. A family of four is £25 (including free entry and parking in Dalby Forest). • Enter online at www.dalbybikebarn.co.uk. Day entries available only if event is not full (£12/£7/£30). • Circular 10k route on the picturesque trafficcalmed Forest Drive. • Start and end location at Adderstone Field with parking, kids play area, toilets, refreshments and activites. • Bike hire available including a helmet and puncture repair kit if needed. • Family-friendly, safe and fun for kids. • Attractive to a wide range of riders looking for a fun and easy introduction to sportives with likeminded riders. • Mechanical support and a feed/drink station. • Keen enthusiasts can ride the Tour de Dalby Sportive, watch the Tour de Yorkshire race whizz by, then pedal down the beautiful Forge Valley and watch the race finish in Scarborough (approximately 11 miles). The Dalby Sportive offers the thrill of being part of a group of riders riding an inaugural event, discovering the amazing views along the Forest Drive, the chance to make new friends along the way and then watch the elite riders straight after.

For those that want to experience the true cycling experience, the Tour de Dalby Sportive is a fun race

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

LIONS CLUB TOGETHER TO HELP NEXT STEPS socialising,” said Leisa Taylor, Next Steps’ service manager. “This year we hope to reach out to more people in isolated rural areas and the iPads will help with this work enormously. Our thanks to the Lions for such a speedy response. Their organisation provides amazing support to the people of Ryedale,” added Leisa.

ocal Lions clubs have “clubbed together” to provide five touch-screen tablet computers for Ryedale’s Next Steps support group to help people with mental health problems. The donation, from Malton Lions and Ryedale Lions Clubs, will enable Next Steps Mental Health Resource Centre to help individuals with job hunting, online learning and other computer skills. “This is a fantastic opportunity for our users in Malton, Pickering, Kirkbymoorside, Helmsley and surrounding villages to gain new skills to increase learning job prospects, confidence and

Members of both Malton and Norton and Ryedale Lions Clubs presented the iPads at Next Steps’ support centre in Malton. “We are delighted to be able to help a local group who provide such valuable support to those in our community with mental health issues,” said Nick Simpson, President of Malton & Norton Lions. “Lions clubs work hard to raise money to bring help to those most in need and working together has enabled the two clubs to provide much bigger support for this project. We wish Next Steps and its users every success,” said Stuart Brown, service co-ordinator for Ryedale Lions.

NATIONAL CHARITY INVITES OVER 75s IN RYEDALE TO JOIN THEM FOR A CUPPA, CAKE AND GOOD COMPANY Contact the Elderly, a leading national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is inviting local residents in Ryedale to join its monthly tea parties and enjoy a few hours of tea, chat and good company. Currently the group in Ryedale has space for a number of new guests to join and the charity is keen to raise awareness of these openings among the local community. Contact the Elderly, with the support of thousands of volunteers all across the UK, organises monthly tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would like some company on a Sunday afternoon. Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship. Contact the Elderly’s Ryedale Development Officer, Mary Robinson, said: “For older people who live alone, Sundays can be particularly long and difficult. These tea parties give people a chance to get together with others, make new friends, eat delicious cakes and enjoy a cup of tea. The monthly events make a real difference to the lives of those in the group and we would encourage anyone interested in coming along, or those who know of people to whom it might appeal, to get in touch.” Ryedale residents, aged 75 and above, who live alone without the support of family and friends, and are interested in joining the Ryedale Contact the Elderly group can contact Wendy Chapman, Ryedale Group Coordinator, on 07973 113529 or email mary.robinson@contact-the-elderly.org.uk 54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

BONE SHAKER AND VELOCIPEDE RACE INTO NORTON FOR LE TOUR DE YORKSHIRE

H

istoric cycles and local bike buffs will feature in a special exhibition by the Woodhams-Stone to celebrate Le Tour de Yorkshire coming to Norton on May 2nd. A bone shaker and velocipede will sit alongside an up to the minute racing bike provided by local cycle club Malton Wheelers in a pop-up exhibition to be staged at Trinity Church on the day of the Le Tour from 11am to 4pm. A tribute to keen cyclist and Gazette and Herald columnist Des Reed will also be featured. Woodhams-Stone Project Manager, Sarah Maultby, said: “When I heard that Le Tour de Yorkshire is coming to Norton this year I started to do some research on historic cycling clubs in the town and was amazed to discover that the very road that the 2015 cyclists will use to enter Norton – Beverley Road – was where the first speed trials in the town were held in 1869! “These cyclists would have raced on ‘velocipedes’ so we have borrowed an example of this model

from the Castle Museum in York - the exhibition illustrates the history of local cycling from 1869 to the present day enthusiasts, Malton Wheelers”. Norton town councillor and chair of the WoodhamsStone Collection, Di Keal said: “It is a fantastic accolade for Norton to welcome Le Tour and the Woodhams-Stone Collection wants to play its part in adding to the attractions in the town. “We have even managed to borrow a bone-shaker for the exhibition – although I think the bikes that we will see racing through the town on May 2nd look a lot more comfortable and easier to ride! “Local businesses in Norton are getting behind the Le Tour activities, decorating their shop fronts, running promotions and helping to make the whole day a celebration for the town”. After May 2nd the exhibition will be based in the Subscription Rooms in Malton’s Milton Rooms for the rest of the summer.

RAISING THE PROFILE OF GUIDE DOGS IN RYEDALE

R

yedale Guide Dog Support Group (RGDSG) was set up initially by Greg Christie after he lost his sight and was fortunate enough to have Captain, his dog, come into his life. The group has been set up in conjunction with Guide Dogs (formally known as Guide Dogs for the Blind Association), a national organisation that has been supporting sight impaired people with specially trained dogs since 1931. With around 333,000 registered blind people in the UK and only 5000 working guide dogs there is a need for more dogs. There are currently 7 guide dog users in Ryedale and this is likely to increase. What most people do not know is that it costs £50k for the life of a guide dog, this includes training, feeding and vets bills. Guide Dogs has no government funding. Every penny is raised by the charity. Whilst this may seem like a lot of money, guide dogs make a huge difference to people’s lives.

Guide dog owners are only too aware of the wonderful work their dogs do with all generations so what RGDSG wants to do is not just raise vital funds and have collections (though these are very important) but to try and raise awareness of the presence of guide dogs in their community. RGDSG is also behind campaigning for better access for visually impaired people within the community. As a new group Ryedale is small but committed to raising the profile of Guide Dogs, if anyone has a little time and enthusiasm and would like to offer it to help further the cause please get in touch. The group meets monthly, usually on a Friday morning at The Yard coffee shop in Malton who make 2 and 4 legged patrons alike very welcome. For more information about the group please call Greg on 07847 354586 or if you are interested in learning more about Guide Dogs visit their website www.guidedogs.org.uk

You can do whatever you must” For you had good Insurance With a company you could trust Her leg was badly broken Despite bandaging, didn’t improve After months of costly treatment Her leg had to be removed Kitty’s doing fine now Financially you didn’t stress The insurance paid for treatment Allowing you to do your best When money is an issue Owners can get in strife Some pets are not as lucky To have Insurance save their life 64 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
