elcome to the May edition of the Handy Mag, your community magazine, business directory and guide to what’s happening in your area. Recently I was asked “What makes a great community?” Every edition Nicky and I are amazed by the amount of community events and local groups that we are asked to publicise in the Handy Mag. I think it all comes down to people caring about their local area, all those who contribute to making it a great place to live, and everyone being able to feel part of that community, whatever your age. Is ours a great community? Certainly Ryedale comes high up the list of the best places to live in the UK. There is a local army of volunteers who help in a huge variety of ways to make our communities better from tidy-up groups, food festival organisers and scarecrow makers to charity fundraisers,

museum volunteers, scout leaders and enthusiastic event-goers! Hooray for Ryedale! The downside is that more volunteers are always needed. How about helping on the North York Moors Railway or welcoming people to the food festival or even serving coffee at a charity function? Whatever your interest I’m sure you can find a local organisation in our pages to get involved with. Our community is also served by a huge range of fantastic local businesses, run by local people who need our support to keep our towns and villages vibrant, interesting and happy places to live and work. This month, two events bring crowds flocking into Ryedale: the annual Malton Food Festival and the North York Moors Railway Steam Gala in Pickering. Let’s enjoy and celebrate what we have to offer on our doorstep! You can find much more to do in our events listings this month. Well done to Esther Edwards for winning the March competition.

find themselves playing with the children, listening to the parent, helping with a trip to the local park or shops, or anything else that makes life easier for the family.

Family life today is changing. There is not always the same support network available from within the family as there used to be. Home-start makes a difference to families through its home visiting service. A volunteer will visit a family who are finding things a struggle, for whatever reason, in their own home. The support given may be either practical or emotional and is confidential, nonjudgemental and tailored to meet the families’ needs. Volunteers may

Ruth Heron, Home-Start Ryedale Coordinator says, ‘We are always looking to recruit new home-visiting volunteers to give friendship and support families across Ryedale. All our volunteers are required to undertake training on our volunteer preparation courses which run twice a year. The training is great fun and equips our volunteers with the skills that they need to help support families in their homes.’

Home-Start also needs people with a flair for fundraising or organising events, to join Friends of Home-Start. This lively and sociable team has organised many events including a cake stall, coffee morning, creating and selling home-made hats, a sponsored family walk and have more exciting events in the pipeline. Ruth went on to say ‘Volunteering is an enjoyable and rewarding way to make a real difference in the local community. Many of our volunteers find volunteering a positive experience and some either go back into learning or education or embark upon new careers.”

If you would like to find out more about volunteering opportunities please contact Ruth Heron, Home-Start Ryedale Co-ordinator on HSRyedale@googlemail.org.uk or call 01653 693551.

LOOK WITH YOUR EYES!

Calladenes ’ Interiors BEAUTIFUL BESPOKE BEDROOMS & KITCHENS

Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church ‘What are you looking at?’ was the cheeky response we gave as teenagers when someone was caught staring. They were probably miles away, deep in thought not looking at us at all; we can sometimes look but not really see. ‘Look with your eyes’, my Mum used to say and now my wife tells me I ‘man-look’ when I just can’t see what’s in front of my eyes. Sometimes we look but just don’t see what we’re looking for. There are some things we all need like encouragement, approval, strength, comfort, value or love but often can’t find them for looking? We experience some but deep down we long for more. Almost 10 years ago when I arrived in North Yorkshire, I kept commenting on the incredible views especially when coming across the Wolds looking towards the Yorkshire Moors. I had lived in Letchworth Garden City next to a beautiful common where muntjac deer and black squirrels could be seen but compared to what was on offer in North Yorkshire I had seen nothing. Local people thought I was mad, to them it was nothing new; they had become blind to the beauty in front of their eyes. Human beings looking to find the things we need for life can settle for less or become blind to what is right in front of our eyes. In my search for meaning I have looked down, looked within and looked out to others but unsatisfied with what I found I looked up and began to really see. The Bible puts it like this: ‘But the basic reality of God is plain enough. Open your eyes and there it is! By taking a long and thoughtful look at what God has created, people have always been able to see what their eyes as such can’t see: eternal power, for instance, and the mystery of his divine being.’ What are you looking at? What are you looking for? Perhaps it’s time to take another look and this time, as my Mum used to say, ‘Look with your eyes!’

ANNUAL FOOD LOVER’S FESTIVAL

SET TO WELCOME THOUSANDS OF VISITORS TO MALTON

T

he North Yorkshire market town of Malton is soon to welcome its 8th annual Malton Food Lover’s Festival (28 – 29th May 2016). Attracting thousands of visitors to Malton over the weekend, the Festival is well regarded as one of the most prestigious food festivals in the UK. Dubbed ‘Yorkshire’s Food Capital’ by esteemed chef Antonio Carluccio, Malton’s annual Food Lovers Festival has grown significantly from just 1,500 visitors in its first year to being one of the biggest food festivals in the north, attracting some of the finest foodie talent in the country. Among the 2016 festival line-up is celebrity chef Rosemary Schrager, returning to Malton for a 3rd year to host an exclusive cookery tutorial, a live demonstration and a Q&A session. With over a decade on our TV screens, Rosemary endeared herself to the nation when she took part in I’m a Celebrity, Get Me Out Of Here where she proved she could cook just about anything, anywhere. Her new show The Chopping Block begins on ITV1 on 11 April. Rosemary said; “What I love about Malton is the atmosphere, it’s passion for food and the incredible location. I jumped at the opportunity to come back this year and really can’t wait!” Festival Organiser, Tom Naylor-Leyland

Rosemary Schrager

Festival Organiser, Tom Naylor-Leyland, said; “We look forward to welcoming thousands of visitor’s back to Malton, Yorkshire’s Food Capital, for our 8th Food Lover’s Festival. With more stalls, chefs and food than ever before, I hope you will enjoy the weekend more than ever and visit Malton time and time again. With British food gaining respect and popularity around the world, it is thrilling to be part of the Yorkshire food revival here in Malton”. A jam-packed programme of events and activity will ensure there is something for the whole family across the weekend from chef demonstrations by celebrity chefs and Yorkshire’s finest local talent, talks and tastings, stalls and street food, a dedicated children’s zone, festival bar with live music and a new Festival Party. Free consultations and quotes are available to anyone thinking of having a new bathrooms installed. Paul has an extensive portfolio of images from work he’s completed in the past which as well as giving an idea of what he can do, can also inspire your design ideas.

CENTRAL HEATING

Paul Chaplow Plumbing and Heating specialize in installing heating into new builds or extensions. As well as traditional gas central heating installations, they are also happy to install increasingly-popular under-floor heating.

LEAD WORK SPECIALIST

Lead work on roofs and around windows is most often carried out by leadsmiths –but it was traditionally part of the plumbers’ job, and Paul’s apprenticeship included full training. Loft conversions and roof extensions with dormer windows often benefit from a more intricate type of lead flashing, which Paul can take care of, along with traditional lead bay windows and box gutters.

No job too big or too small. 30 years experience. Plumbing, Heating & Leadwork Specialist info@paulchaplow.co.uk 45 The Ridings, Norton YO17 9AP

KITCHEN & BEDROOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU

Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.

T

he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we

The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had

her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 25 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source

The students and Ian then watched from Platform 2, Pickering Station the arrival of the iconic Flying Scotsman from Grosmont Station and performed their poetry in the designated Reussner Learning Centre. Class Teacher Mr Eddy said: “The students had a great time and thoroughly enjoyed learning from Ian McMillan and seeing the world’s most famous locomotive”. Helena Fox, Education Officer said: “The North Yorkshire Moors Railway is an educational charity which is here to provide educational experiences outside the classroom. With the support of Ian McMillan we were able to offer a free workshop educating local primary children on the world renowned steam engine.” New for 2016 at the North Yorkshire Moors Railway ‘The Last Train’ workshop. Let your pupils explore the impact of the 1965 closure of the Whitby to Pickering and Esk Valley railways on school children living in the North York Moors. hilst being able to provide foot care in the Scarborough and Ryedale area, an area I love as a local Yorkshire born and bred lad, I have to regularly spend time traveling south to attend training courses at The SMAE Institute near London. This is to keep my knowledge and skills up to date to ensure I provide the best possible foot care. The SMAE Institute is the longest running independent training provider for foot care in the UK. So, as well as being able to offer appointments in the comfort of people’s homes at a time that is convenient to them, I strive to offer Quality service based on up to date study and training. I am also on a voluntary register that has been accredited by the Professional Standards Authority.

The Accredited Voluntary Register (AVR) scheme was set up by the Government to improve standards and safety for the benefit of the public. It demonstrates a commitment to high professional standards of care, enhancing safety and delivering a better service.

One of the great British jazz voices of all time, Elaine Delmar brings her acclaimed interpretations of two of the greatest songbooks of all time, Gershwin and Porter, to Saturday evening. Completing Saturday’s line up, ’60s legend P.P. Arnold will have festivalgoers off their seats and dancing. Surrounded by the beautiful Yorkshire Wolds and set in the award winning grounds and Great Hall of this Elizabethan stately home, could this be the most breathtaking place to spend a weekend, soaking up the UK’s hottest jazz and blues acts? Festival favourites Octopus kick off the festival in style on Friday evening with their classic big band swing, before Bugalu Foundation brings a fusion of jazz, funk and soul. Manjula kicks off Saturday’s line up with their haunting ambience of Indian vocal training and the rhythmic attack of jazz improvisation. From here, we move to pannist Dudley Nesbitt , who is an unflagging advocate for the art and culture of the steel pan. Blind Monk Trio rounds off the afternoon session, putting a fresh spin on the sax/bass/drums trio format. 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Improvising violinist Matt Holborn will start off the festival on Sunday. Lindsay Hannon and her band will then take us on a journey from raucous barrel house blues to thoughtful, spacious ballads and Graeme Wilson will play an infusion of driving jazz and Latin rhythms, ambient swing with enthusiasm for folk and rock ballads, and free jazz. Simon Cunliffe-lister will join Ben Beattie’s After Midnight Band to round off the festival. Delicious food will be served on the Food Lawn and Tea Tent, and we’ll have the award-winning Wold Top beer on tap. There’s camping in our adjacent Park Field, with hot showers. Discounted ‘early bird’ tickets are currently on sale, priced at £70 for the full weekend, while children under 12 are free with an adult. Top Tips from a dental professional

FOR PEOPLE WHO SPIT BLOOD WHEN THEY BRUSH THEIR TEETH

Harmonia Choir presents

Summer Serenade

Y

ou may well have seen the TV advert about a by Christine Parker well-known brand of BDS (GDC 72136) mouthwash. You may not be aware that using mouthwash is no substitute for a thorough gum check and professional cleaning. Bleeding gums can be a sign of gum disease or other underlying health conditions and should always be assessed by a dental professional. The mouthwash advertised can cause severe staining of the teeth and whilst it may stop or reduce the bleeding it will not usually address the cause. When your dentist examines you they should assess the bone support around your teeth and the degree of gum inflammation. Where there are problems these can often be addressed by some fairly simple methods.

These include: • Stopping smoking as this is a major cause of gum disease and can cause oral cancer. • Brush thoroughly for a minimum of 2 minutes twice a day. Disclosing tablets can be used to show you where you might be missing (they are not just for children) • Use interdental brushes or floss to clean the spaces between your teeth, this removes plaque and food which can stagnate causing bad breath, tooth decay and gum disease. • See a dentist at least once a year who will establish the specific cause of your bleeding, recommend a course of treatment and demonstrate home care you can do to manage and control your future risk. So for people who do spit blood the message is see your dentist because bleeding gums really can lead to tooth loss. For a thorough gum assessment and treatment planning please call Jan at Howardian Dental.

THE EDUCATIONAL GAP

PICKERING MUSICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS

BY MARY MAHON

As summer draws nearer, people generally think of their holidays, the weather and the beauty of the world at this time, but for the vast majority of the younger generation, summertime also means something else: exams Schools and colleges now offer so many different, optional courses to choose from, ranging from learning ancient, extinct languages such as Latin, to special effects make-up, to abstract maths. People truly have the world at their fingertips, able to pursue any dream they desire, however, whilst it’s great to revel in all that the education system offers, there are also equally worrying gaps. All throughout school life, young people are taught fundamental subjects such as maths, science and English up until the final compulsory year, at which point students tackle challenging and complex formulae such as the quadratic equations, understand the incredible life cycle of a star and can quote and analyse the works of William Shakespeare. Now, whilst this curriculum is vastly significant in creating cultured, diverse people who will one day be leading our future, it also just as important to note what young people are not learning. Biology is studied for a minimum of five years, yet basic first aid is not time-tabled in with it and the delicate but crucial subject of mental health is largely neglected too. When learning about the history of the world, why are lessons explaining our own justice system and laws ignored? School leavers often graduate with an unclear view on how to do taxes, how to vote or even what our 30 basic human rights are; we live in a society where we aren’t taught a lot about the basics of our reality. Essentially, we absorb a lot of impressive, intellectual content, however that isn’t to say what we are taught isn’t important for real life! Yes, a lot of things may never come in handy (personally I don’t see when my knowledge of longitudinal or transverse waves will ever help me), but in the end whatever education you’re provided with is a brilliant opportunity. Knowledge is power, after all.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

GARDEN VIEW

By Rachael Leverton

Bring on the biological warfare! I’m a huge fan of biological warfare. But before you all write in to complain about my radical stance, I’m really not talking about anthrax and Ebola: I’m talking about using nature to tip the balance in favour of us gardeners. Ladybirds are my favourite biological control. They feast on aphids (greenfly) and during their year long lifespan they can scoff 5000 of them! Ladybird larvae are long and black with orange spots. They look a bit mean but don’t be tempted to squish them as they are also voracious aphid-eaters. Lacewing larvae eat 300 aphids each before turning into adult

lacewings and guzzling down even more, and even the much maligned wasp has a taste for greenfly so don’t be too quick to swat it with your gardening glove; it’s actually protecting your roses. The beautiful song thrush is in decline, but it loves to eat slugs and snails. Thrushes were very susceptible to slug-bait poison based on methiocarb and this was banned by the EU in 2014. The most common ingredient now is metaldehyde which is still very toxic to many garden beasts (as well as domestic animals). And slug bait is a very inefficient way to dispose of your slug population anyway, reducing it on average by just 10%.

Frogs and toads are great slugeaters, as are hedgehogs. The former can be encouraged by providing them with a tiny pond: it really doesn’t have to be much bigger than a bucket sunk into the ground. Hedgehogs prefer a pile of logs to hide under, or you could invest in a hedgehog house. There are many handsome ones about, though if you’re a bit of a handyman you could probably make one yourself.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE The big new thing in biological pest control in recent years was the arrival of pre-packed nematodes and mites. Nematodes are tiny parasites which are watered on to a problem area when the soil temperature is 10C or greater. The nematodes enter the pest and reproduce inside it, killing it in the process. When the pest dies they are then released back into the soil, ready to infect new pests. There are nematodes to target slugs, vine weevils and ants. Predatory mites are also available to target red spider mite and thrips. All of these methods have the advantage of targeting a particular pest very specifically without causing damage to the environment. Of course with organic gardening you’re unlikely to get a pristine plot but don’t despair about the odd blemish. See it as a positive sign that you care about the environment and the wildlife in your garden then repeat after me, blemishes are beautiful...

Lost Hero from Hovingham

A

Hovingham man who joined up twice in WW1 is to be commemorated in the refurbishment of the village’s war memorial. Cyril Judson of Hovingham volunteered into the Artillery in 1914 but was invalided out just weeks later. Still determined to do his bit, he enlisted into the elite Machine Gun Corps. He died following his wounds in January 1920. Although honoured with a Commonwealth War Graves Commission, he was not listed on the village memorial probably an administrative error. Cyril’s name and are appealing to members of his family - and of all those listed - to get in touch: Bowes, Coultas, Dawson, Dunning, Galtry, Hickes, Hutchinson, Judson, Pemberton, Ward, Watt, Wray, Goodwill. The restoration will add more information, including full names, regiment, place and date of death and age, on a flat stone, in front of the memorial. In addition, an archive, written by the Ryedale Family History Group, will be available in the church. This gives much more detail on both those who fell and those who returned in both World Wars and will cover their families, occupations, addresses and war service and makes poignant reading. The memorial and the archive

will provide a more personal and human record of Hovingham residents who served and be a fitting commemoration of their sacrifice. Donations and sponsorships are already coming in and the organisers are confident that the goodwill, as shown by the 100 residents who turned out for the village’s August 2014 “Lights Out” ceremony, will quickly cover the £1,700 cost. Plans for the new stone and a proof copy of the archive will be shown at Hovingham Village Market on Saturday May 7th, when it is hoped that anyone with more information about those who served will come and share it. More information is available on www.hovingham.org or from Martin Knight metna@ enterprise.net and Rob Thompson (ardnamurchan75@btinternet.com)

The FA Cup kicked off in 1871, making it the world’s oldest football cup competition. The only club still in existence to win three FA Cup finals in a row is Blackburn Rovers (1884 to 1886). They had 24 consecutive match wins in that time. In 1888, a match was held on Christmas Day, between Linfield Athletic and Cliftonville.

Ashley Cole holds the record for the most wins – he’s won seven times! Three wins were with Arsenal and four with Chelsea.

Arsenal also holds the record for the most wins in the FA Women’s Cup (13). Manchester United was the first team to win the Cup after only playing top-division teams (1948). In 1985, Kevin Moran became the first player to be sent off in an FA Cup final. The FA Women’s Cup began in 1970, although it was then called the Mitre Challenge Trophy. The first FA Women’s Cup winner (in 1972) was Southampton.

Join Ryedale Book Festival and Brass Castle Brewery for a vibrant literary event at the brewery with an adventurous twist on Saturday 7 May at 4:30pm. York-based writer, photography enthusiast and adventure motorcyclist Nick Gilroy will be taking the audience on a motorcycle adventure of their own through his memories, tales and photographs. Nick, having grown up in the Lake District, has an adventurous approach to life and through both work and leisure has visited over a hundred countries. His passion for travel, in combination with motorcycling and photography, has culminated in the publishing of two books. Nick’s first book, Talking to Strangers, is a motorcycle journey through the fifty states of

the USA. Throughout the ride, he encounters extremes of weather, roads and traffic congestion, not to mention an interesting sample of American people. His travels take him from Florida to Utah and from the open roads of the Great Plains to the high desert of Idaho and the remote Alaska Highway. This is a rollercoaster of a journey, and is sure to make for a fascinating and thrilling afternoon, encompassing a vibrant mixture of people, stunning geography and a light sprinkling of history. Tickets are £5, including a half pint of Brass Castle beer, and are available from the Ryedale Book Festival website: www.ryedalebookfestival.com

SPRING TIME ITCHES – IS YOUR PET AFFECTED? Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

Spring has arrived! Although most of us look forward to the warmer weather, the budding trees and the colour returning to our gardens, it can herald the start of the “itchy season” and misery for sensitive pets, especially dogs. Many animals will start to lick or scratch themselves at this time of year. It is their version of hay fever but while we react to pollens going up our noses and into our eyes, dogs are affected by contact with the skin. This is why the most commonly affected areas of the body are those close to the ground or often in contact with foliage, such as the feet, tummy and ears.

feet, to a reddish-brown colour. This is staining from the saliva caused by excessive licking of a particular area and it is most obvious on lighter coloured dogs. Diagnosis of allergies can be tricky, but blood tests and skin testing can help to identify substances in the environment that individual animals are allergic to. Common culprits include various pollens, fleas and house dust mites

Once the skin flares up the dog starts to scratch, rub or lick it. Known as the itch/scratch cycle the problem rapidly escalates causing inflamed, angry sore areas.

When treating these conditions medication is needed to reduce the itching and to tackle any infection caused by scratching or licking and if possible to look at reducing exposure to the allergens.

There is often a change in the coat colour, most often on the

to ensure that parasites are not causing a problem. Longer term treatments may include attempting to identify the underlying cause of the allergy, then creating a vaccine to gradually desensitise the pet to the allergy. This treatment has proved helpful for many dogs. Although allergies are usually managed rather than totally cured, modern medications can make a real difference to our pets. If you are concerned about that your pet is feeling the itch please make an appointment to see the vet!

THE SPOTLESS DOG Mobile Dog washing & grooming service For some of us, buses are convenient, comfortable, cheap, and we are confident they will turn up. For bigger adventures, we make connections to other buses or trains. Some Ryedale villages have no bus service, others have a weekly or only a summer service. Most of us have no evening bus. Nearly 1/5 of Ryedale households have no car. Kirkbymoorside Environment Group supports the Northern Ryedale Public Transport Group, a forum for improvement, attended by bus passengers, bus operators, train operators, Parish Councils and others. To make a fuss because you need a bus, contact Helen, the Secretary, 01751 432447. How are passenger facilities where you live? As a visitor in an unfamiliar place, you need information on the bus stop to tell you where you can get to, what time and what day. A seat and shelter are appreciated by most of us, and a necessity for some. You’ll probably hear more about Bus Walks in 2016. There are lots of nice walks you can do by using a bus for a day out. You can often get that bit further if you use the bus as part of the journey. Encouraging folks to leave the car at home and use the bus instead means less congestion and less pollution on the roads and in our towns and villages. According to our survey, Moorsbus passengers spent an average of £26 per person per day out in local pubs, cafes and shops in 2015. It is not just passengers who benefit from buses! POOR PERFORMANCE IN HORSES Preparing a horse for any type of competition involves a huge investment in terms of time, effort and money, and so frustration often occurs when a horse fails to perform to expectations.

Most owners will agree that a sound horse is important for athletic performance, but many horses examined for performance problems are, for a variety of reasons, lame. While it is true that some horses compete successfully while carrying low-grade lameness problems, the pain associated with lameness often contributes to poor performance, in part by altering the horse’s attitude toward exercise. Treatment of the lameness often results in a rapid return of performance.

Poor performance is an inability of the horse to perform at a level previously observed, or at a level that can be reasonably expected based on the horse’s physical characteristics and state of training. This situation can present a particularly difficult diagnostic challenge for the veterinarian, with two main scenarios usually involved:

This emphasises two points regarding diagnosis of poor performance problems:

1. A horse which has clearly suffered a loss of proven performance 2. An unproven horse which is not performing up to the expectations of the owner/trainer - in many cases, these expectations are overly lofty and in reality there is nothing medically amiss with the horse The horse often appears to be quite healthy, has a good appetite, and is in good body condition, but a decline in ability/attitude during training and a fall-off in performance during competition has been noticed. Many factors contribute to athletic performance and just like a well-oiled and fine-tuned motor vehicle, the horse must be firing on all cylinders for peak performance.

1. Veterinary examination of the horse during exercise is often necessary 2. A thorough and comprehensive work-up is required and can be lengthy by Catriona Moon BSc(Hons) BVSc CertAVP(EP) MRCVS FEI Permitted Treatment Veterinarian FEI 2* Official Veterinarian for Endurance Station House Vets

STATION TION HOUSE VETS Equine & Small Animal

The most important cylinders (body systems) for athletic performance are: • Musculoskeletal • Respiratory • Cardiovascular • Nervous system • Gastrointestinal Whether a particular problem impairs the horse’s performance depends on two factors; the level of exercise required by the horse and the severity of the problem. Minor ailments might not impact upon performance during light exercise, but the same seemingly minor ailment could pose a problem during harder exercise when all cylinders must be firing!

rushed by his election defeat when he stood for Ryedale District Council in 2011, Howard Croft was licking his wounds. He was saved by the Malton and Pickering Mercury, who asked him if he would consider writing a regular article for the paper. Howard agreed and so Howard’s Way, a weekly feature in the Mercury, came about. His articles take a quirky, usually amusing, view on all things local, medical, literary, political, family, canine and international. He has developed quite a following and is often approached by his readers around and about Malton and Norton, most of whom - but not all - are dedicated fans. Five years have gone by swiftly and more than 250 articles have seen the light of day. He’s never

NEW DISCOVERIES AT MALTON MUSEUM Malton Museum will throw open its doors on Saturday 30th April for the bank holiday weekend to reveal the new exhibition Malton Goes to Market. The exhibition tells the story of the development of the market town in Malton. Split into three annual displays, this year the museum explores themes such buying and selling changes to the town through time. Told through a fascinating array of objects, paper ephemera, photographs and an interactive map, the exhibition invites visitors to add to the growing story of the market town by sharing memories and stories of the towns’ rich history. During the development of the new exhibition the museum made a number of new discoveries. In the late 1920’s Dr John Kirk, a doctor from Pickering was excavating the Roman fort in Malton’s

Orchard Fields. He and his colleagues used available containers to store the finds safely. As the museum volunteers, tasked with repackaging these items, began to explore the packaging they found that many of these containers were food and tobacco related, and rather quirky, giving an interesting glimpse into the lives of the excavators and what they were buying at that time. The museum is inviting visitors to share stories with them, drawing on memories such as buying certain items like sugar cones or, as one of our volunteers recalled, introducing olive oil as a cooking ingredient not just to heal earache! The Museum are asking visitors to look back, reminisce and add to Malton and Norton’s rich history to uncover a wealth of stories and preserve them for the future.

e know it’s a bold statement, but we have yet to be proved otherwise. Since we started Vale Radio in 2014, we have helped raise in excess of £100,000 for local charities, social groups and more.

It was only 2 months ago that Chris & Jayne from Vale Radio Breakfast were hosting a charity auction in aid of Martin House Hospice and managed to raise in excess of £14,000. One foggy night in October of 2014 saw £10,000 raised for Blake’s Genes within just 3 hours at Haxby Sports Bar and Social Club. Without the help of such factors of professionalism, showbiz, stage presence and charitable approach, the organisers themselves have said that they wouldn’t have raised so much money. Sandie Dunleavy, Dougie Weake, Chris Marsden, William Jenkyns, Steve Twynham who are all presenters on the radio station, have been raising money for charity for many years and have developed a winning formula for raising a smile and getting folks to dig deep into their pockets for good causes. Vale Radio is a not for profit company itself and prides itself in distributing its’ excess profits to local good causes. Vale Radio broadcasts local information and great music from the 50’s to now, 24 hours a day on your DAB Digital Radio set across North Yorkshire, Online at www. vale-radio.com and on their free mobile app. To hire the team to host your next event, please get in touch by calling 01904 765900 or email: charity@thevaleonline.com
