elcome to our May edition.
May is national walking month. Who knew that simple walking needed a month to promote its many benefits! Wandering along the hedgerows, smelling that spring air, listening to the birds and the sun on your back should be reason enough. I should be thankful for my two dogs that take me on daily walks and I should be really feeling the benefit. However, I confess to being occasionally underwhelmed and stressed by the walking experience. Walking in the wet, waiting for my adorable lab and retriever to explore things (generally nasty) and chase rabbits about the fields can be a real test before breakfast. The twittering of birds across the fields suddenly replaced by my barking at the dogs does not fit with the walking idyll! How do birds always sound so cheerful? May also brings a vast range of colourful seasonal food that needs to be enjoyed. The annual Malton Food Festival is later this month where you can enjoy all that the season offers and more – info on page 49. Levi Roots is bringing his usual blend of tasty food and reggae, and Prue Leith, the new judge on GBBO and a great supporter of the Festival, will be making an appearance. At the Handy Mag we love to support the many local events in the area and our ‘What’s on’ listings are a pretty comprehensive list of everything that’s happening, from small group meetings to much bigger organised events. If you are involved in a local event in June or July, please give Nicky a call or email nicky@thehandymag.co.uk, and she will fit in as much information as she can. Well done to Miss Baxandall of Pickering for winning the March competition. Watch out for those cyclists at the weekend! Until next month…

ne of the biggest challenges of retirement can be the search of a new property that offers a community lifestyle, plenty of space and modern facilities in close proximity to friends and family. The demand for such properties is certainly there. The latest Residential Research report by Knight Frank reveals around 25% of those approaching retirement want to move into some sort of retirement housing in the future. This equates to around 2.5 million households. Responding to the demand is specialist developer for retirement properties Rangeford Holdings. The bungalows, featuring similar interior finishes as the apartments, further benefit from private patios, car parking spaces and guest suites with en-suite bathrooms. Every apartment or bungalow comes with a National House Building Council guarantee, which covers against build defects for 10 years, giving you reassurance that your home is protected. Those requiring a helping hand with household chores such as cooking, cleaning and shopping, or assistance with dressing and bathing can also take advantage of Mickle Hill’s Wellbeing Service. Join a 5km Dirty Dash on 28th May in aid of two local charities
The Rob Stephenson Trust was established by his family to help children to take part in sport, following his tragic passing. L.I.A.M was set up in memory of young Yorkshire musician Liam Miller, and provides grants to young people pursing artistic or musical disciplines in higher education.
Award-winning farm shop Cedarbarn celebrates its 10th anniversary on May 28th, and will mark the occasion with a ‘Dirty Dash’ farm challenge to raise money for two local children’s charities. Cedarbarn has designed a 3 stage race rammed with mud, mayhem and plenty of farm themed obstacles. Mandy Avison, owner with husband Karl, said “We are very proud to be celebrating ten years in Pickering, and wanted to do something good fun and positive to mark the occasion. We have picked two charities which mean a lot to us and we hope many locals and fans of the farm shop will get involved to help us fundraise.”
A ‘MAN WHO CAN’ IS ONLY A CALL AWAY!
“We are very grateful to local businesses Hatfields, Land Rover, McClarrons Insurance, Wold Top Brewery, HPE, Raisthorpe Manor, who are all sponsoring the event. We’d also like to thank our kind neighbours who are allowing us to use their land for parts of the Dash. We’re also on the lookout for volunteers, so please get in touch.” Taking part in the Dirty Dash costs £25, with all money raised to be split equally between the two charities. For more information and full race details please see the website www.cedarbarn-dirtydash.co.uk or Facebook @cedarbarnfarmshop

International Days By Mary Mahon
D
uring the working week, days often blur into one another. They become indistinguishable. Yet for every day of the year, there is, or once has been, a unique celebration. Both officially registered by the United Nations and unofficially created by organisations and individuals, over 200 days this year have been branded with a celebration or remembrance topic. From days such as ‘Human Rights Day’ on the 10th of December, to ‘Ice-cream for breakfast day’ on the first Saturday of February, there is a day for everything, whether it be serious, silly or unsuitable for reality…

Kick-starting the month of May, the UN deemed the 2nd of May ‘World Tuna Day’! The fish that is so important (and tasty), that it has its own day for us to appreciate their importance world-wide! On the unofficial calendar, more questionable foods crop up. ‘Doughnut Day’ on the 5th of June? ‘International Chocolate Day’ on September the 13th? Count me in! Yet behind most days, there is a thoughtful history; both these days are to commemorate their wartime aid as rations and pick-me-ups, donated by the ‘Salvation Army Lassies’ during WW1. Similarly, International ‘No-Diet Day’ on the 6th of May is not created as a ‘cheat day’, but as a day for body acceptance! Some days however, are simply silly. In June, ‘caps lock day’ was formed with no real purpose, whilst the 19th of September’s ‘Talk like a Pirate Day’ and ‘Ask a Stupid Question Day’ on the 28th could create concern at work. Whilst the silly days are undeniably fun, the officially registered days are irrefutably inspiring. They aim to focus on encouraging positivity, like the ‘International Day of Happiness’ and of ‘Friendship’ on the 20th of March and 30th of July. Even the days with darker angles, like the ‘Support of Victims of Torture’ on the 26th of June, keeps an optimistic perspective. International days never discriminate either; they are for the whole world to appreciate and revel in! Perhaps if we each tried to bear in mind some of these days, we could make the mundane days a little more cheerful.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,
Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers
lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or
small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Good news about Moorsbus Kirkbymoorside Environment Group
Timetables are now on the website at www. moorsbus.org, and printed ones are available from Libraries and other information points. Distributing the timetable leaflets and posters is always a massive job for us, so please let us know if you can help get them to the right places for your local area. From 1st May, a MoorsPlus Monday and Saturday service between Malton and Danby, which starts off from York in the morning and also calls at Pickering, Kirkbymoorside and Hutton-le-Hole. This is funded by an exciting new partnership with First Transpennine Express and the Esk Valley Railway Development Company, and will include train/bus connections and tickets.

W
e are delighted to tell you that the Moorsbus 2017 Sunday and Bank Holiday network will be starting on May 1st. This year Moorsbus CIC have added a service to Rosedale and Dalby Forest, and an extra service to and from Thirsk and Northallerton. We have been very busy with fundraising to add these new services, but we also want to say thank you for the bequests via the North Yorkshire Moors Association, and for the Membership fees and donations from Friends of Moorsbus that all help to make the Moorsbus network possible. Since we started Moorsbus Community Interest Company in 2014, each year we have raised the full bus costs before the start of the season, and then the buses have covered just under 50% of their costs from fares and pass reimbursement. The bus companies deduct this fare and pass income when they invoice us each month, so at the end of the season we are left with nearly 50% of what we had raised. We then carry this money forward and it is a big help towards fundraising for the next year’s buses. Each year we have also done extra fundraising to add more buses and days to the network. Publicity for the services is really important because the fare and pass income will all go for next year’s buses, we don’t have any other costs and Moorsbus CIC and Friends of Moorsbus are all volunteers. Our aim is to expand the network further each year so that more non-drivers can enjoy the National Park; and to encourage car drivers to use the bus instead to reduce pollution and congestion.
BusWalks are a great idea for Moorsbus. Instead of walking round in circles from a car, you can use a bus at the start or end of your walk, and perhaps include a pub or cafe on your route. We’ll be adding some suggested BusWalks to our website this year, so please let us have any ideas about this. Your thoughts about days out for people who can’t walk much would also be most welcome. Moorsbus CIC can be contacted on 01751 477216

Local Larder
W
hether you’re looking for a place to have a cosy drink and cake with friends or somewhere to enjoy tasty local cuisine, our area is spoilt for choice. We are very lucky in Ryedale to have so many independent retailers, producers, cafes, restaurants and pubs to choose from. From the finest local cuts of meat, home baking, cheeses, local wines, beers and gin, we have it all! This month there is food and drink galore to purchase at the Malton Food Festival and Hovingham Village Market and if you’re interested in the history of our local food, the new Malton Museum recipe book will be available at the Festival. Sometimes we take all our local independent food and drink businesses for granted. Even though we can obtain seemingly any food all year round in supermarkets, produce tastes and looks much
better when it hasn’t travelled half way round the world or been stored in a warehouse for months. Money we spend with local growers and retailers all stays close to home, providing employment opportunities and economic growth. When you’re out enjoying the better weather remember to keep food and drink local this spring!

PASTRY BASE • 250g plain flour • 125g salted butter, cold, diced • 90g caster sugar • 1 egg • 1 orange LEMON FILLING • 6 lemons • 350g caster sugar • vanilla essence • 9 eggs • 300ml double cream MAKE THE PASTRY Rub the cold, diced butter into the flour until you have a breadcrumb-like consistency (or blitz in a food processor). Stir through the caster sugar and orange zest. Crack in the egg, then mix and press into one ball of dough. Do not knead it, but make sure it combines without cracks. REST THE PASTRY Wrap the pastry in clingfilm and chill in the fridge to rest for an hour. Preheat an oven to 180° C. ROLL AND BAKE Roll the rested pastry on a floured surface to the thickness of 1/2cm. Lay it into a loose bottomed round baking tin (24cm across). Ease it into the corners, lay in a sheet of baking paper and fill with baking beans. Bake for 15 minutes in the preheated oven, before lifting out the beans and paper and returning to the oven for another 5 minutes. LEMON FILLING Zest the lemons and squeeze the juice out of them into a large bowl. Whisk in the vanilla and caster sugar and caster sugar, then the eggs until smooth, before finishing with the cream.

Malton Goes to Market, The Recipes
A
fter an appeal to the Handy Mag and local press for local handwritten recipes Malton Museum has received a number of recipes from the traditional to the quirky. Crispy piglets anyone? Among these, are recipes written in an old address book and a book created to raise funds for St Leonard’s Church in 1907. Favourites include recipes from the 18th century in faint but beautiful handwriting and found in an attic, and local butcher, Derek Fox, has kindly allowed us to include his famous Christmas recipe.

Great British Bake Off's New Judge Prue Leith To Join Levi Roots In Malton Malton Food Lovers Festival 27th and 28th May 2017 Levi has been putting music into food since 1991 when started making sauce from his kitchen in Brixton. That year he started to sell the sauce at Notting Hill Carnival and, after 16 years, he officially entered the food industry via his success on Dragon’s Den.

his year two celebrities will join an enviable foodie line up at the Malton Food Lovers Festival: Prue Leith, brand new Great British Bake Off judge, and the Reggae Reggae Sauce star Levi Roots, renowned for putting music into your food.
Set to join Paul Hollywood in judging Channel 4’s The Great British Bake Off, Prue Leith is an esteemed restaurateur, cookery writer and television presenter who trained at Cordon Bleu in London. Bursting with artisan food producers, distillers, brewers and independent shops, there’s no better place to celebrate good quality food and drink!” As well as headlining the chef’s cookery theatre on the Saturday, Levi Roots and his band will be the main act at Malton’s Saturday night Festival Party, entertaining festival goers with reggae tunes into the night.
Levi commented on his return to the festival; “I can’t wait to return to the Malton Food Lovers Festival this year. The festival is the ultimate celebration of food and attracts thousands of hungry visitors who have a real love of food – just like me! I’m back with a bang and ready to inject some spice into the weekend! ust Holiday Homes, based in Pickering, was founded in March 2016 by Philip Pask and Jack Colley. They were frustrated at how complex existing travel comparison sites were and saw a gap in the market for a local private holiday rentals company. Between March and May 2016 they discussed their ideas and started building the website. Since then, Phil and Jack have been concentrating on improving the usability of the site and adding new features helping the business to grow and the site to gain users. Phil says, “Holiday home owners have to use a lot of websites and spend a lot of money to get well known and established. We felt that we could do better and at the same time give something back to our local area. We are one of the only independent cottage holiday companies in Yorkshire and, as we’re so passionate about our corner of Ryedale, we’re keen to support local owners with our own website. “The goal for Just Holiday Homes has always

Stunning bathrooms on any budget A quality bathroom on pretty much any budget can be yours with help from Paul Chaplow Plumbing and Heating.
P
aul is an experienced tradesman with 30 years in the business, and is fully qualified and registered with GasSafe.
BEAUTIFUL BATHROOMS Paul specialises in fitting exquisite bathrooms that will have –as both he and his happy customers put it –the ‘wow’ factor. He said, “I take pains to use the best quality materials from local merchants who I personally trust. When it comes to the supply and installation of a new bathroom, if it wouldn’t be good enough for my house it isn’t good enough for my customers either.” Paul prefers to source all the bathrooms fixtures and fittings himself, so he can guarantee the quality of the finished bathroom. He works to your budget, advising on how to allocate it sourcing suites and fixtures at
the best possible prices and guaranteeing incredible value for money. It’s a completely effortless service for the customer –he’ll project manage everything from start right through to decorating. All you need to do is pick up the phone each evening while work is under way for Paul’s update on how things are progressing. Fans, glass screens or even complex spaces that need a bit more expertise to work with are all part of Paul’s specialties – he has even installed a television into a customer’s bathroom!
ADVICE AND PORTFOLIO OF PREVIOUS WORK
Free consultations and quotes are available to anyone thinking of having a new bathrooms installed. Paul has an extensive portfolio of images from work he’s completed in the past which as well as giving an idea of what he can do, can also inspire your design ideas.
CENTRAL HEATING
Paul Chaplow Plumbing and Heating specialize in installing heating into new builds or extensions. As well as traditional gas central heating installations, they are also happy to install increasingly-popular under-floor heating.
LEAD WORK SPECIALIST Lead work on roofs and around windows is most often carried out by leadsmiths –but it was traditionally part of the plumbers’ job, and Paul’s apprenticeship included full training.
Loft conversions and roof extensions with dormer windows often benefit from a more intricate type of lead flashing, which Paul can take care of, along with traditional lead bay windows and box gutters.

I well remember Edward Heath, A boating man with keyboard teeth. He laughed with shoulders all aquiver, Then sold his country down the river. Life back then, seemed slow; -- uncluttered. We knew which side our bread was buttered. No such thing as social media, World Wide Web or Wikipedia. No tablet screens or mobile phones. No Instagram or flying drones. The only tablets then were aspirin, And all the men seemed much more masculine. Today it’s e-Mails, perhaps a text, I wonder what is coming next? Talk is almost obsolete, Much easier to post a tweet. Tweeting should be left to birds, With silver notes; -- Not rebus words. Back then we sent a written letter. Back then in my mind, things were better. Clive Milson

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Kitchens & Bedrooms Local service, choice & value
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen
is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us,
because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After over 26 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can

Gardening Slug Survival
field slug which are more likely to wreak havoc. With estimates of there being about 200 slugs per average cubic metre of average garden soil, the situation can soon get out of hand.
Whether your garden is big or small, the chances are that slugs will cause you grief. There are about thirty species of slug in the UK and most feed throughout the year, especially after dark and when the soil is wet or moist – and now that spring is here, they’re out in force! However, most slugs actually do little damage to living plants, instead preferring to feast on dead and dying material. Typically it is smaller slugs like the greyish-black keeled slug and the pinkish-beige-grey
Keeled slugs in particular love to feast below ground, as well as on plants above the soil surface. In no time at all slugs can eat through the base of a young stem, killing the plant in the process, or eat seedlings even before they have had a chance to emerge above the soil surface! Later in the year, they will begin to tunnel into potato tubers and carrots too. They breed quickly and very efficiently, and you’re most likely to spot the clumps of eggs on the soil surface, beneath flopped foliage and amongst moist organic matter. So what can you do with these squidgy little menaces? • Go on an evening slug hunt.

• Choose vegetable varieties which have useful resistance to slugs. Choose varieties such as Charlotte, Kestrel, Sante or Wilja. • Encourage natural predators such as hedgehogs, frogs, toads, slow worms and ground beetles. • Use the Nemaslug nematode control, a treatment I like because it is harmless to everything except slugs. It works swiftly and silently too and, if you’re a potato grower and you drench the soil around the potato plants about six weeks before anticipated harvest, the nematodes soon get to work and your potatoes should be virtually slugdamage free. Use it to clear a slug-infested raised bed or planter and apply self-adhesive copper tape around the rim of the container to keep the contents slug free. • Barriers such as crushed shells, wool pellets, soot, pine needles or copper-impregnated fabric can also work well, but may need replacing regularly and results seem to vary. • Traps filled with beer can reduce slug numbers in your garden dramatically. Spring Alert: Sycamore Poisoning in Horses by Dr Sarah Hunter Bvet Med MRCVS Station House Vets
AN INDEPENDENT PRACTICE ESTABLISHED 1984
Equine & Small Animal
Sycamore seedlings are sprouting up everywhere at the moment, indicating that Spring is definitely here! However, these little seedlings can cause a fatal disease known as Atypical Myopathy if they are eaten by horses. The seeds (keys) and seedlings of the common sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) can contain a dangerous toxin called Hypoglycin A which can make it’s way to the horse’s muscle, causing the muscle cells to become inactive and even die. The condition is usually seen in autumn (when the seeds are on the ground) and spring (when the seedlings are growing). The toxin can cause signs such as lethargy, depression, reluctance to move, muscle tremors, sweating, difficulty breathing, red or brown urine and colic. The disease can progress rapidly so recognising the signs and starting treatment quickly are critical. The horse needs intensive care to be given a chance of recovery and there is no antidote. Treatment consists of supportive care such as fluid therapy and pain relief. The disease can be prevented by ensuring that horses cannot eat sycamore seeds or seedlings, this includes; fencing off areas around sycamore trees, moving horses to other pasture during risk periods, providing extra forage for horses so that they aren’t tempted to eat sycamore seeds and clearing up sycamore seeds when they have fallen from the tree. If there has been a case of Atypical Myopathy on your pasture, it’s advisable to remove all of the other horses and have them checked by a vet. Unfortunately little information is available about Atypical Myopathy and there may be other factors involved that we are unaware of. The number of cases varies from year to year so the condition could be influenced by temperature or climate. Research is ongoing. If you think that you may have seen a case, please report it to your vet. For any further information on the condition please call 01653 618 303.

Ryedale Dog Rescue fun dog show season starts this month The RDR team are currently gearing up for the busy summer show season where our fun dog shows help us to raise much needed funds to get us through the difficult winter period. So, it’s time to spruce your pooch and get practising those clever tricks as our first fun dog show will take place at Driffield Country Fair on 29th & 30th April, followed by a fun dog show at Sledmere’s Family Dog Day on 14th May. Every penny we raise at these shows is spent on rescuing and rehabilitating unwanted and abandoned dogs, so treat your dog to a fun day out - and if you don’t own a dog come along and find out about some of the dogs we have looking for their forever home.
DOG OF THE MONTH: SANDY
Sandy is approximately 12 months old and is a
friendly young girl. She is very affectionate with people and gets on fine with the other dogs at the kennels. Initially a little timid in new surroundings but her confidence is growing all the time. Her parentage is unknown but possible Dog de Bordeaux cross.

The Greatest Feast By Fr Tim Bywater, St Leonard & St Mary's RC Church, Malton
I
t is not too late to wish you a Happy Easter. Easter, of course, lasts for 50 days from Easter Sunday to the feast of Pentecost when the gift of the Holy Spirit was given to the Church. Easter is the greatest feast of the Christian year, but it involves so much that it is difficult to take it all in. It is easier for us to relate to the birth of Jesus at Christmas or the tragedy of the death of Jesus on the Cross on Good Friday, than it is to comprehend the Resurrection of Jesus. Easter is the most surprising and marvellous event that ever occurred and, far from being expected, it took everyone by surprise. Easter proclaims the ultimate victory of goodness in a world where so often the opposite is true. The great virtues of truth, goodness and justice are in the end triumphant, however weak or powerless they may appear. If we look around us now these virtues often appear weaker than their opposites. We need to be convinced of their strength. To really believe in the power and goodness of God is not easy. Nearly two thousand years after the triumph of Jesus, there is little evidence to suggest that truth and goodness are in control. In the gospel accounts of the Resurrection of Jesus, it is the unexpected that strikes us. Most of the followers of Jesus didn’t believe it at first. Even his close friend Mary Magdalen took some convincing. Nor did the resurrection of Jesus make life easier for those early followers, but it did help them to overcome their fears and anxieties and it gave them hope. The Resurrection of Jesus assures us that good will triumph over evil and invites us to walk in the light of this unexpected and refreshing hope.
