elcome to our May edition…

With the good works of our local food businesses, it’s easy to enjoy your food too much if you live in or around Ryedale. This is especially true in May with the Malton Food Lovers Festival, now celebrating its 10th year, and guesting a veritable feast of Michelin-starred chefs including Tommy Banks, (on our cover) from the amazing Black Swan at Oldstead. As a nation we seem obsessed with food, from cooking increasingly extraordinary dishes to obsessing about calories, gluten, meat and now having to add tax on sugar. When I was growing up in the Midlands, we enjoyed battered spam with potatoes and peas for tea, and were excited about pink blancmange for pudding - the types of food we now eat has certainly changed! We have a large range of food and drink businesses advertising this month so why not take the opportunity to get out and sample some of the best that Ryedale has to offer. And what is best about local food is that you naturally avoid many of those big ticket calorie traps! Our mission at the Handy Mag has always been to support our local area, bringing our communities together. We not only offer space to local charities and organisations to advertise their events and news, we continue to help businesses, large and small, to promote themselves. The magazines are all distributed to letterboxes via Royal Mail and your local posties to ensure that everyone gets the chance to use, support and sustain their local community. If you use businesses or attend events

Chocolate and Pear Tart By Andrew Walker, The Patisserie Malton

Real Ale & Sausage Festival 13th - 17th June

INGREDIENTS: Chocolate Frangipane Mix • 130g ground almonds • 130g icing sugar • 125g butter • 2 eggs • 50g cocoa powder • 50g plain flour • Tin of poached pears • Flaked almonds for top

Pastry Base • 250g plain flour • 125g salted butter, cold, diced • 90g caster sugar • 1 egg • 1 orange

MAKE THE PASTRY

Rub the cold, diced butter into the flour until you have a breadcrumb-like consistency (or blitz in a food processor). Stir in the caster sugar and orange zest. Crack in the egg, mix and press into one ball of dough. Do not knead, but make sure it combines without cracks. Wrap pastry in clingfilm and chill in the fridge to rest for an hour. Preheat oven to 180°C.

ROLL AND BAKE

Roll the pastry on a floured surface to the thickness of 1/2cm. Lay it into a loose bottomed round baking tin (24cm across). Ease it into the corners, lay in a sheet of baking paper and fill with baking beans. Bake for 15 min in a preheated oven, before lifting out the beans and paper and returning to the oven for another 5 min.

CHOCOLATE FRANGIPANE MIX

In a food processor, blend the butter and sugar until pale and soft. Add the ground almonds, flour, pinch of salt, eggs and vanilla. Blend well. Remove the blade and stir in the cocoa with a spatula. Spread the almond mixture evenly over the cooled pastry case. Drain the pear quarters and arrange on their sides in a circle around the tart, pressing gently into the almond mix, narrow ends towards the centre. Top with flacked almonds. Bake on the tray in the center of the oven for 40–45 min or until frangipane filling is well risen and golden brown. Leave to stand for 15 minutes before lifting from the tin. Serve warm or at room temperature with lots of crème fraîche.

Half fill a large frying pan with water and bring to the boil. Add the asparagus spears and simmer for 3-4 minutes until just tender. Drain well and refresh under cold running water. Brush the slices of bread on both sides with some of the olive oil. Place the slices on a hot cast-iron griddle pan and cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until just crisp and lightly charred in places. If you don’t have a griddle pan then simply grill the toasts.

We have noticed renewed interest in the wines from this legendary region of France and we shall be featuring a good selection of these at our May tasting.

Rub the cut garlic cloves all over the hot toasts (this imparts a mild garlic flavour to the toasts). Spread the goats’ cheese over the toasts.

Tickets £15.00 per person

Arrange the asparagus spears on top of the cheese and add a few rocket leaves to each. Drizzle over the rest of the olive oil. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and serve immediately.

Malton Food Lovers Festival Announces Star-Studded Line-Up Yorkshire's Food Capital Celebrates The Festival's Tenth Birthday With Line Up Of Yorkshire Michelin-Starred Chefs

The Malton Food Lovers Festival attracts tens of thousands of visitors – and this year is set to be the busiest yet with four of Yorkshire’s own Michelin starred chefs headlining festival activity, with cookery demonstrations, talks and interviews. The late Antonio Carluccio hailed Malton as Yorkshire’s Food Capital in 2015 and the town’s reputation has continued to grow year on year. Most recently, Malton was named in The Times’ Top Places to Live in Yorkshire and the Sunday Times’ Best Places for Food Lovers.

The four local chefs set to bring their Michelin-star flavour to the Festival include Tommy Banks, winner of The Great British Menu 2016 athtaking and 2017 and owner of The Black Swan in Oldstead. Joining Banks is

Andrew Pern, owner and Michelin starred chef at The Star Inn at Harome, James Mackenzie, owner and Michelin starred chef at the Pipe & Glass Inn and founder of the Yorkshire Chef Certificate Award. They’ll be joined by BBC Great British Menu and Masterchef star, Michael O’Hare, owner of the Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds. The Black Swan in Oldstead was named Best Fine Dining Restaurant in the World 2017 on Trip Advisor, and head chef Tommy Banks has appeared on Saturday Kitchen, Sunday Brunch, The Apprentice and also as a mentor on Masterchef. His first cookbook, Roots, is out now. Whitby-born Andrew Pern has owned the Star Inn at Harome since 1996, when he was only 25. He

has always championed local, seasonal produce, and quickly built a reputation for the Star Inn as an award-winning eatery, holding Michelin star status for 15 years and in 2017, it was voted the UK’s number one Gastropub for the third time. Andrew now also operates The Star Inn The City, York, and The Star Inn The Harbour, Whitby, as well as Mr P’s Curious Tavern, located near the Shambles in York. James Mackenzie, owner of the Pipe & Glass Inn, grew up in Filey and began his first job in the kitchen at just 13 years old. He later trained at Scarborough Technical College, and in 2006 acquired the Pipe and Glass in South Dalton with his wife, Kate. In 2010 the Pipe and Glass became the worthy bearer of East Yorkshire’s first Michelin Star, an accolade it has retained ever since. Michael O’Hare, former head chef at the Blind Swine in York, opened his own restaurant, The Man Behind The Curtain in Leeds in 2014, which is the only Michelin Star restaurant in the city, followed by The Rabbit in The Moon in Manchester in 2017.

He’s well known from starring in high profile cooking shows including BBC’s Great British Menu, Saturday Kitchen, Masterchef and Yes Chef. Also appearing this year are the Pigott Brothers from the popular BBC programme, Family Cooking Showdown, and stars from BBC’s Further Back In Time For Dinner. The Festival’s Main Stage will now take pride of place in the heart of Malton, while a brand new Indoor Market will take place in the Milton Rooms. For those wanting to eat al fresco, a newly designated street food and picnic area will be set up in next to the Milton Rooms and Taverner’s Yard will be open for the first time as part of the festival with a range of Yorkshire’s finest alcoholic drink stalls. Malton also hosts monthly food markets on the second Saturday of the month from February to December, the Harvest Food Festival in the Autumn as well as Street Food Sundays – a twice monthly event hosted throughout June, July and August. The Malton Food Lovers Festival will take place on the 26th and 27th May 2018. Entry is free throughout the weekend. For more information, visit www.visitmalton.com.

Undaunted male choir is back in concert mode

PICKERING MUSICAL SOCIETY PRESENTS

t’s second time lucky for Malton District Male Voice Choir as it gets into Spring mode after efforts to start the concert year early were stymied by local bad weather. The choir had to cancel a St David’s Day concert in early March after snow prevented the 20-strong group from getting up to Pickering. But it is now heading back there on 4th May for another attempt to sing at the Alba Rose Care Home. On 1st June, the choir marks the Methodist anniversary in Thornton-le-Dale with a concert in the Methodist Chapel. On 10th June it travels to Alne near Easingwold to take part in the prestigious Alne Street Fayre – one of ‘The Times’ Top 20 Family Days Out’. The choir plans to use the summer to expand its repertoire at regular Monday practices in Malton while taking up new requests to sing. It’s a regular time for singing at weddings and also an opportunity for newcomers to join the choir. No previous singing experience is required. In October, the choir performs its third private concert inside a year in Malton’s Talbot Hotel. It’s for former Norton Mayor and Town Clerk Cyril Shreeve who first asked the choir to sing at his 95th birthday party last year. He invited the choir a second time in April and has now asked for a third concert. On Saturday 3rd November Malton District Male Voice Choir takes part in the Tenth Anniversary of the prestigious East Coast Churches and Community Music Festival in Bridlington. The final currently planned event of 2018 is the annual Christmas Concert on 9th December which takes the group back to its former venue in Malton’s Methodist Church.

Bike Donation Station Malton Community Primary School has been working closely now for over a year with the Yorkshire Bank’s bike libraries scheme. Over the last twelve months, the school has become a donation station where members of the local community have donated over 15 bikes of all sizes, from children’s bikes to adult mountain bikes. As a school this has enabled us to recycle bikes from our local community. Bikes can be loaned to children and families who do not have their own and all of our refugee families have been offered bikes as part of the settling in process. We have also directly benefitted, as the bike library has provided balance bikes for our children in Early Years and those taking part in bike ability courses at school. If you would like more information about the scheme please contact the school on 01653 692582, enquire at the Yorkshire Bank, or search online at bikelibraries.yorkshire.com

OYEZ OYEZ - Helmsley to host inaugural National Town Crier Competition Helmsley is to host its very first town crier competition – which it is believed will be the largest, national town crier competition to be held in Yorkshire for several decades. David Hinde, Helmsley’s awardwinning town crier, and the Helmsley in Business group will Photo: Chris Lazenby host the competition, which is at Lazenby Visuals to be held on 21st July 2018. The ‘Helmsley Invitational National Town Criers Competition for The Magna Carta Trophy’ will see at least 20 official town criers representing their towns from across the country, competing before a panel of speciallyselected judges to the rules of The Ancient & Honourable Guild of Town Criers. The setting will be the beautiful Helmsley Walled Garden, with Helmsley Castle as the stunning backdrop to the competition. Criers are awarded points on clarity, volume, diction

and inflection. The morning ‘Home Cry’ will see the Criers perform a 125-word cry about their home towns, usually in rhyme, before an afternoon ‘Themed Cry’, which is on a subject of the host crier’s choosing. As host, David Hinde will be unable to compete, but will be introducing each Crier and their consorts and providing a Benchmark Cry to assist the judges. There will also be a colourful parade around the town, ensuring visitors have a chance to see the criers and their consorts in their superb regalia, and both visitors and the local community will be encouraged to watch the competition at the Walled Garden. For many Criers this will be their first trip from the South Of England to Helmsley and the North York Moors National Park and they will be staying locally for the weekend. To keep up to date with news on the event go to www.visithelmsley.co.uk or follow Helmsley on Facebook www.facebook.com/ visithelmsley or @visithelmsley on Twitter.

Malton in Bloom 2018 by Antony Croser planters in Wheelgate and the entrance to Community House in Wentworth Street Car Park. There are several major new projects for 2018.The flowerbeds at the bus station will be planted up by Malton and District Beekeepers Association. Various “hidden” sites in and around Malton town centre will be planted up with wild flowers, herbs and fruit via Ablaze Youth (Elim Ryedale Church). It is planned to introduce wild flower planting to Orchard Fields, the riverside between County Bridge and Railway Street and at The Croft Community (Camphill Village Trust).

M

alton has been listed by The Sunday Times as one of the best places to live in the country and those involved with Malton in Bloom and Malton and Norton Tidy Group would like to think that their hard work has helped to get Malton (and Norton-onDerwent) get this recognition. Their efforts are for the benefit of all residents and visitors alike - a healthy and clean environment is good for us and for our economy. It plays an important role in improving our well-being and it helps our businesses to be more successful through a positive, attractive outlook.

MIB are interested in hearing from individuals, community groups and clubs that would like to be involved. Details can be found at www. maltoninbloom.co.uk.

Once again, colourful hanging baskets and window boxes will adorn Malton town centre and barrier planters will festoon the road bridges to enhance the links between Malton and Norton on Derwent. This amounts to around 3,000 plants! Malton Community Interest Company (Malton CIC) is signing up local businesses and shops with hanging baskets - there will be around 150 adorning Malton town centre. If you have a business in town, please contact Mark Brayshaw 01653 692849 for more details.

Malton and Norton Tidy Group is a small, informal and dedicated group of volunteers who try to keep the community looking cared for - complimenting the work of Malton in Bloom. Formed in 2009 the Tidy Group has met on a monthly basis ever since – Malton one month, Norton the next.

The MIB sites from 2017 have been maintained and enhanced by various community groups over recent months: The “Welcome to Malton” signs (Malton and Norton Tidy Group and Duke of Edinburgh’s Awards participants); Malton War Memorial (The Flower Girls); raised beds in Newbiggin (Malton WI); Malton Railway Station - platform planters (Derwent Diggers); flowerbeds on the Station forecourt and at Water Lane Car Park, and St Leonard’s Close garden on Old Maltongate (MIB volunteers).

The Tidy Group concentrates on litter picking, especially the roadside verges and areas away from the town centres. 166 sacks of litter, plus debris, have already been collected in 2018. Community gardening tasks have also been carried out – maintaining flower beds in St Nicholas Street car park, clearance work in the riverside picnic area and on footpaths, and planting up and maintaining town entrance signs in Malton and Norton-on-Derwent. For anyone wishing to get involved with or support the Tidy Group contact details can be found on Facebook ‘Malton and Norton Tidy Up Group’ and Twitter @MaltonTidyUp.

Plenty in store at The Red House Retirement Village in Ripon once a fortnight and now boasts 28 members. Judy comments: “We sing a variety of songs, from the Carpenters and Simon and Garfunkel to war-time songs. In the run up to Christmas, we sing carols and other festive music. “I also enjoy the Walking Group as I get to see more of the surrounding countryside and, like many others here, I don’t come from this area so it is always interesting seeing somewhere new,” adds Judy.

L

ife for future owners at The Red House will be filled with plenty of life-enhancing events and a social calendar, the envy of those much younger in years! The new retirement village in Ripon, being created by Enterprise Retirement Living (ERL), will provide a lively community for older people to enjoy the lifestyle they deserve, whilst living independently.

Sally Guttmann owns one of the small raised bed allotments at Boughton Hall. Sally says: “It’s very satisfying and rewarding to get out into the open, be in the fresh air and do something productive. Many of us have come from family homes with big gardens and we feel blessed to have the opportunity to have something of our own to tend to, but which is a manageable size.”

Hattie Bacon, Head of Sales, Marketing and Operations at ERL, explains: “We try to offer something for everyone at our retirement villages and The Red House will be no exception. There will be an opportunity to meet others as well as join in a range of interesting activities in a relaxed environment. Owners themselves will be able to form interest groups such as local history or gardening, and take part in social evenings, summer barbeques, boules and quiz nights – which allow for some good-natured competitive fun – or simply enjoy an informal coffee with friends. “Key calendar events will be celebrated, from a supper on Burns’ Night to a black-tie dinner in the run up to Christmas. Local charities will also be supported through coffee mornings and cake sales,” continues Hattie. Sandra Gavin, an owner at Boughton Hall, ERL’s retirement village in Chester, says: “The social activities are well thought out and popular, and we have the freedom to come and go. It’s such a good way of meeting people and touching base, and I enjoy the fact that I can do both – socialise here and go out and about too.” Judy Allen and June Eades, who also live at Boughton Hall, set up a singing group which meets

The Red House is set in peaceful surroundings of beautifully landscaped and maintained grounds and terraces. This high-quality village offers one- and two-bedroom apartments and cottages with privacy and independence, yet provides support and care when needed through the 24-hour on-site team. A range of facilities will be available including a gym, restaurant, bar, library, hair salon and crafts room. Short Story Paws for Comfort

“Are you Ian, the bellboy?” An elegant lady in a tweed cape strode into the hotel ballroom, startling Ian, who’d been busy admiring his hair from every angle in the mirrored walls. Behind her another lady in an anorak, wrestling a nylon men’s suit carrier in her arms, struggled to keep up. Ian nodded warily. He’d already carried one old lady’s luggage to the second floor and that seemed like quite enough work for one day. “You’ll do perfectly,” she said, and turned to her companion. “Dolly, don’t you think he has the look of a young Liberace?” “Very handsome, Val,” the lady nodded emphatically. Ian instinctively smoothed his hair. “So that’s settled,” Val said. “You’ll do it.” “Do what?” Ian was alarmed. As a rule, he tried to do as little as possible. “We’re holding a fashion show in the hall and our model has let us down.” She smiled demurely. “I assume you have catwalk experience?” “A bit.” Ian’s gran had once entered him into a beautiful baby contest, so he knew that the world of fashion was just waiting to discover him. He frowned. “I’ll have to ask my manager.” “Don’t worry yourself about that,” Val said. “I’ve already cleared it with Mr Fulsome; he’s delighted with the arrangement.” Ian was surprised to hear this because the air between him and Mr Fulsome had been frosty ever since Ian had been caught taking selfies in the honeymoon suite Jacuzzi. “What would I have to do?” Ian asked. “Imagine New York fashion week,” Val raised two manicured hands to set the scene, “and you’re the star of the show.” Ian’s eyes lit up. “Where’s my manners?” she laughed. “Let me introduce our designer, Dolly Cramp.” Dolly shuffled forward and awkwardly shook Ian’s hand, while trying not to lose control of the suit carrier. “You’re just perfect for my outfit.” She grinned as though unable to take her eyes off him. Ian had seen fashion designers in magazines but none of them looked like Dolly Cramp. He hoped the grubby anorak she was wearing wasn’t one of her designs.

“The local TV station is here already,” Val added, “so you’ll get lots of exposure.” “What?” Ian suddenly felt excited. “Where?” Val pointed to the ballroom exit. “Just through those doors.” “Have I got time to let my friends know?” Ian pulled out his phone. Nothing was going to stop him announcing his big break in fashion. “Be my guest!” Val cried. “Get it out on social media, and everyone will see you on the teatime news.” In a few excited taps of his phone Ian alerted the world to his big catwalk debut. “Right, let’s get you into your outfit.” Val clapped her hands. “Dolly, hand over the suit.” “You want me to change here?” Ian asked; this was all happening very fast. “We’ve seen it all before,” Dolly grinned, offering him the bag, “haven’t we Val?” “Let’s turn our backs anyway, Dolly?” Val said. “Give the lad his dignity.” Ian unzipped the bag, and a long brown garment of furry padded fabric came tumbling out. “What’s this?” He thought there must be a mistake. “It looks like a onesie?” “It’s the star of my Paws for Comfort range,” Dolly called over her shoulder. “Incredibly snuggly, and it makes the wearer look like a gerbil. Will you need a hand with the tail?” Ian held up the costume in horror and wondered whether he could make a run for it while their backs were turned. “And be quick,” Val added. “The cameras are rolling just outside.” By Jackie Brewster

Harmonia Choir News Well done to Harmonia who were once again winners at the Eskdale Festival in Whitby this April! Harmonia is 10 years old and led by choir director Alison Davis who says, “It has taken alot of hard work to get to this high standard. The choir were absolutely delighted when they retained the Songs from the Shows trophy but knew that they would be up against it in the Recital with several very good choirs taking part this year for the first time. So to win it for the third year running was a fantastic achievement! If you’d like to see Harmonia in concert, you can view all of their upcoming events on the website at www.harmoniachoir.co.uk

Singing for Safety - A joint event with IDAS, Harmonia and Methodist Women in Britain It was unfortunate that the Singing for Safety concert had to be postponed due to the snow. Since then, efforts have been made to find a date which is suitable for all concerned. Much as the sooner the better would be the ideal, diaries did not allow this, and so the date is to be Saturday 15 September, at Trinity Methodist Church in Norton. If you still have your ticket, please keep it safe for September.

3 good reasons to leave the car at home... Moorsbus, Moorsbus and Moorsbus MoorRewards offers that you’ll find at the superb Ryedale Folk Museum and local cafes.

A

ctually, Moorsbus gives you many more than that. It’s a lovely, friendly, stress-free way to see the Moors. Run by volunteers, it makes the National Park a greener, quieter and more pleasant place. Enjoy superb one way walks rather than having to retrace your steps. Don’t worry about how safe your parked car is. And sip that well-earned pint or glass of wine at the end of a great Moorsbus day because no-one’s driving. Why not take a Moorsbus to the fascinating Danby Moors Centre for a few hours then, when hunger strikes, head for the Lion Inn at Blakey, Hutton le Hole or Pickering before boarding your bus for home? Or ride up to the ever popular Sutton Bank Visitor Centre to take in “England’s finest view”, or to Rievaulx with its impossibly beautiful Terraces, Temples and Abbey, then return via Helmsley with its ice cream maker and brewer, both of whom will let you sample their delicious products? Fancy a buswalk? Take our M3 bus to The Lion Inn at Blakey, walk the Rosedale Railway track south from Blakey to Chimney Bank Top, admiring the stunning views, old ironstone kilns and, if you’re lucky, ring ouzels along the way. Head through the heather of Spaunton Moor to Hutton le Hole where members of Friends of Moorsbus (it’s only £5 to join!) can take advantage of the very special

Appetite whetted? There are more buswalks, places to go and our timetables at www. moorsbus.org. Ask your library for a timetable or send a stamped self addressed envelope, to Friends of Moorsbus, 4 Foundry Cottages, Wrelton, Pickering YO18 8PF. Moors Rover tickets cost £9, allowing up to 4 children to travel free as well. Single journey fares are also available. Bus pass holders travel free but if you’d like to help keep Moorsbus running please ask the driver for a £1, £3 or £5 Donate ticket. You’ll recognise a Moorsbus by the green triangle in the front window. In towns and villages we use normal bus stops but in the countryside you can hail the bus – just give a clear signal to the driver and they’ll stop wherever it’s safe to do so. The Moorsbus network runs from 20th May until 30th September 2018.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers

lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or

small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Discover Dalby through the eyes of an artist Renowned international artist Helen Sear is Dalby’s first ever artist in residence and her new work will launch there on Saturday 5 May. Over the past year, Helen worked on a Helen Sear by Lua Ribiera 2014 new video and sound work commissioned in partnership with Scarborough’s Crescent Arts. ‘Wahaha Biota’ will launch on Saturday 5 May 2018 and the exhibition will run until Sunday 10 June as part of Dalby’s developing Forest Art Works programme. From the planting of trees to their processing in the saw mill, Helen followed and filmed the management of the forest environment, combining the industry of wood production with leisure activities. ‘Biota’ is the animal and plant life of a particular region, habitat, or geological period.

Helen also led a sound workshop at Dalby, resulting in a dawn chorus of human voices set in a forest clearing. Calls and whispers mingle with birdsong and barking deer to create a lyrical cycle of intense sound and imagery that explores our relationship with the forest. Helen’s work explores the crossover between photography and fine art, and her focus on the co-existence of the human, animal, and natural worlds. Her work challenges accepted notions of photography as a documentary and creative medium. It is very exciting that a selection of Helen’s work produced for the 2015 Venice Biennale will also provide a strong focus across the exhibitions at Dalby Forest, Ryedale Folk Museum and Crescent Arts. At Dalby the exhibition will be open from 11am-4pm daily, 5 May-10 June. Forest Art Works is a national Forestry Commission programme designed to promote initiatives across artforms in England. Helen is the first artist in residence at Dalby as part of this, thanks to funding support from Arts Council England.

'Journey for Freedom' - Ryedale Book Festival Commemorates World Refugee Day event is to help people remember that not all journeys are undertaken willingly. There is much that we can learn from the stories that Christina and Emma Jane will be sharing that will bring hope and a greater appreciation of a situation that dominates the news headlines and our hearts.

T

o commemorate World Refugee Day (which takes place on June 20th) and as part of its journey-themed literary weekend, Ryedale Book Festival has invited two award-winning journalists to share their experiences of the refugee crisis at a special celebratory dinner on Friday 29th June. Christina Lamb OBE, co-author of The Girl from Aleppo – Nujeen’s Escape from War to Freedom and Emma Jane Kirby, recipient of the Bayeaux-Calvados Award for War Correspondents and author of The Optician of Lampedusa, will sit down with guests for an evening of discussion and delicious food at the historic Old Lodge Hotel in Malton, Yorkshire’s Food Capital. Christina is Chief Foreign Correspondent at The Sunday Times whose best-selling books include I am Malala and The Africa House. Her works have been recognised with numerous awards, including the Sue Lloyd Roberts/UNHCR award for her writing about refugees. Christina recently featured on BBC Radio 4’s popular and long-running programme, Desert Island Discs.

“The evening of sharing food and stories promises to be an uplifting and inspiring event, spent in the company of two respected writers who have helped to put a human face to the on-going global refugee crisis through their journalism and their books.” Profits from the evening will be donated to The Refugee Council, a charity that is supporting refugees to make their first challenging steps towards resettlement in North Yorkshire. Tickets for the dinner are available from the website www. ryedalebookfestival.com/whatson/journey-for-freedom/ or the Festival Box Office: 07983 943 029

Emma Jane is a journalist with BBC Radio 4 who has reported extensively on European affairs for the World at One, PM and Broadcasting House. Christina and Emma Jane will join guests for the twocourse dinner featuring recipes from Syria’s legendary cuisine. The menu of sharing dishes, catering for all dietary requirements, is inspired by Marlene Matar’s The Aleppo Cookbook, which wowed food critics from around the globe when it was published last year. At this occasion guests will have an opportunity to learn more about one of the most challenging chapters of human history whilst being able to enjoy a taste of one of the world’s most ancient cultures. WELBURN VILLAGE HALL

Saturday 5 May 7pm for 7.30pm. Alan Bennett’s Talking Heads. The Library Theatre Touring Company presents two theatre performances over the course of the evening with excellent performances from Deborah Kelly. A Lady of Letters’. Miss Ruddock’s civil liberties are dear to her, and writing letters is how she likes to assert those rights. One of these missives pushes her to the brink, with unexpected, but liberating consequences. The second piece is ‘Bed Among the Lentils’. Susan is a nervous vicar’s wife who distracts herself from her vainly insensitive husband and his doting parishioners by conducting an affair with the nearby grocer, Ramesh, discovering something about herself and God in the process. As usual Alan Bennett’s writing

comes shining through, both acerbic and witty. Tickets now on sale - £8 from Yvonne Myers 01653 618610 or Sylvia Haines 01653 619764 or email sylvia.haines@hotmail.co.uk.

Infiniti QX50. By James Baggot Although Infiniti’s drive-by-wire steering allows the car to do clever things – like independently steer individual wheels, hundreds of time a second – it lacks feel, particularly at slow speeds. Whether that’ll bother the average buyer remains to be seen.

What is it?

Launched in the UK less than 10 years ago, Japanese luxury brand Infiniti is still attempting to establish itself as an alternative to the German trio and struggling to top 3,500 sales a year. The firm’s latest attempt to change that is a midsize SUV to tempt buyers away from the BMW X3 or Audi Q5. With smart technology, a distinctive design and a clever new engine, Infiniti is hoping the QX50 will rapidly become the brand’s bestselling car.

What's new?

The QX50 debuts a number of world-first gadgets. These include dynamic noise-cancelling technology in the engine, seats designed in conjunction with NASA, and a petrol engine that promises sports performance with the economy of a diesel.

What's under the bonnet?

That clever new VC-Turbo engine is a world-first variable compression ratio engine, offering the power of a 2.0-litre turbo petrol with the torque and efficiency of a four-cylinder diesel. Currently there are no plans to offer a diesel engine. The 2.0-litre engine produces 268bhp and 380Nm of torque, whereas a petrol-powered BMW X3 20i offers 184bhp and 290Nm – thus apparently giving the QX50 the upper hand.

What's it like to drive?

The engine generates impressive performance, hitting 60mph in 6.3 seconds – two seconds faster than the equivalent BMW – and gives a top speed of 143mph. Much of the noise it makes is synthetically generated, teetering on the edge of deeply satisfying and incredibly annoying. There’s also a CVT automatic gearbox, which becomes very audible at higher revs.

The QX50’s new chassis and ground-up design has certainly resulted in a quiet and comfortable ride, and a dynamic noise-cancelling engine mount, which stops noise entering the cabin, means it’s calm inside too. Hit the car’s ProPilot button and it’ll steer for you (but you’ll need to keep a hand on the wheel), speeding up and slowing down with traffic. The Forward Collision Warning system uses radar to spot traffic slowing down and Infiniti says it can even detect a slowing motorbike hidden in front of an HGV.

How does it look?

The QX50 has a welcome and genuinely different design, and the quite hard-on-the-eye look of Infiniti SUVs of past has been toned down.

What's it like inside?

Inside is where the QX50 really shines. Handstitched leather panels, alcantara and a swooping dash give it a luxury feel, and it’s far better packaged than early Infiniti models.

What's the spec like?

The QX50 is slated to arrive either late this year or very early in 2019, so as such Infiniti is remaining tight lipped about specification and pricing. Executives did tell us that it would undercut BMW and Audi rivals and it’s likely much of the new technology will be included as standard.

Verdict

Infiniti believes the QX50 is the best car it has ever made – and we’d find it hard to argue with them. The clever new VC-Turbo engine is impressive, the ride quality and interior finish excellent and we even like the looks. Quite how Brits will react to a petrol-powered SUV with no diesel option remains to be seen, though, and its success will hinge on just how much it undercuts established rivals from the German brands.

Gardening

Striking Sunflowers. By Pippa Greenwood There are fast-growing and potentially very tall varieties such as ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Titan’, with the latter reaching a potential height of up to 360cm or 12ft and having heads of up to 60cm (2ft) in diameter! There are some delightful miniature or dwarf varieties. The F1 variety ‘Little Dorrit’ grows to about 60cm (2ft) and has rich yellow flowers with very dark centres. Another favourite is ‘Little Leo’ at just 45cm (18in), which makes lots of impact with golden yellow heads on multi-branching stems.

S

unflowers are one of the most stunning and impressive flowers you could have in your garden, and are easy to grow too. Sow them this month to achieve a fantastic flowery display in just a few months’ time. So which ones should you choose and how do you go about getting the best crop of flowers?

Nowadays there are many colours other than yellow readily available, such as ‘Black Magic’, which has maroon flowers and is multi-branching, reaching a height of about 180cm (6ft). Grow yourself a few for cutting too, and you’ll have a vase or more full of flowers that would cost a fortune in the shops. Many varieties are suitable, including the orangey-brown ‘Velvet Queen’, ‘Black Velvet’ and the bi-coloured and pollen-free ‘Magic Roundabout’.

86

Slugs and snails love sunflowers so I always grow them in small individual pots and plant them out when they’re a few inches tall. For containers, ‘Pacino Colada’ is a compact variety growing to just 40cm (16in) and has 10cm (4in) wide golden-yellow flowers, making a wonderful plant for a sunny patio, sheltered balcony or in the flower beds. Children love a competition to grow the tallest plant and varieties like ‘Russian Giant’ and ‘Giant Single’ are perfect for smaller gardeners, and as they reach heights of about 180cm (6ft) will soon dwarf them! Sunflowers make a cheap and cheerful addition to a garden boundary, adding splashes of colour to a dreary fence line or helping to mask a garage or shed. You should get a good crop of blooms if you sow sunflowers between March and May, depending on the weather and where you live. You can sow them straight into the soil or into pots of compost. I like to use RootTrainers to encourage really well-developed and deep roots to develop, and make it easy to plant out the sunflowers with minimum root disturbance; see www.pippagreenwood.com/products/growgreat-crops for more information. As their name suggests, sunflowers need plenty of sunshine to thrive. However, although many are tall, each plant does not actually take up much space at ground level. Slugs and snails love sunflowers so I always grow them in small individual pots and plant them out when they’re a few inches tall. This means they’re bigger and tougher and better able to resist attack. As an added precaution, put a ring of slug-deterring material around the base of each one – crushed shells, crushed eggshells, coco-shell or pine needles for instance. If you’re growing sunflowers on anything other than a protected site, it may be necessary to give the taller varieties some support in the form of a sturdy bamboo cane or slim stake, just in case the wind blows too strongly! Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen garden-ready vegetable plants in May accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus RootTrainers, Nemaslug, bio-controls, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

New GreenSpirit group opening in Ryedale

E

ver felt that you would like to develop a deeper appreciation of our beautiful natural environment here in Ryedale? Perhaps you would like to feel more in tune with the changing seasons or to reconnect to the customs and rituals that have nourished former generations for thousands of years? Could it be that you would be enriched by celebrating the changing year marking with others the rhythms of our planet as we hurtle through space following age old paths. At the beginning of 2018 a few of us met to form a local GreenSpirit group, and at our first celebration in February, 28 of us came together for storytelling, music, and simple ritual to commemorate the Celtic festival of Imbolc. GreenSpirit (www.greenspirit.org.uk) is a national network of people who celebrate the human spirit in the context of our place in the natural world. Our radical vision brings together the rigour of science, the creativity of artistic expression, the passion of social action and the wisdom of spiritual traditions of all ages. Attracting those of different faith traditions, or none, we are a body of people who believe that

APPLIANCE SOLUTIONS SERVICE & SALES IN RYEDALE

human life has both an ecological and a spiritual dimension. We celebrate the awe and magnificence of life on our beautiful but fragile planet. We’re an inclusive, friendly and an inspiring group of people making real connections with each other and with our planet. On Sunday 29th April we will be celebrating Beltane, followed by the Summer Solstice on 24th June. Beltane is mentioned in many folkloric tales as the time when ‘winter and summer do battle for the goddess of the land’. More prosaically it will provide an ideal opportunity to celebrate and have fun together, and as always there’ll be delicious veggie food to share. Meetings take place at the Friends Meeting House in Malton. Everyone is welcome, including children and young people. For further details please contact Chris or Jan on 01653 693913, or find us through our Facebook group ‘GreenSpirit: Ryedale and Yorkshire Coast Group’.

Is Your Horse Covered?

Clare Brash MRCVS. Station House Vets When I was a child my neighbours used to bring me their mad unbroken horses to “break in”. It was dangerous work but great fun, when you are young enough to bounce! That was until one particular pony, a wild grey Welsh Mountain called “Tweed” was left with me and rapidly developed tetanus after a tiny injury. Unbeknown to me she hadn’t been vaccinated. The disease is caused by bacteria in the environment which gains entry to the body through small puncture wounds and releases a toxin which rapidly causes muscle spasms and death.

VACCINATION AMNESTY Restart your pet’s vaccinations for the price of a booster. If your pet has missed a vaccination, please call us on 01653 618303

I never wanted to see this condition again, and it was one of the factors that set me on the path to becoming a vet myself. Sadly it has become more prevalent as people forget to vaccinate their horses and donkeys. It only requires a booster every 2 years after the initial course a month apart and then a first year booster. As part of our vaccine amnesty we are able to give the second vaccine of the course for free, so do get in touch with us this spring. Flu vaccination is also part of the amnesty. This is less dangerous to the horse by comparison but a flu outbreak would curtail any movement of horses, showing, hunting, racing, eventing or even visiting other yards would be banned. The disease itself is a highly contagious viral cough which spreads rapidly through a yard, rarely lethal but very debilitating for the horses concerned. Any horse which meets others or which is in contact with horses who compete should be covered in order to prevent an outbreak. Please take advantage of the vaccine amnesty, or contact your vet to check your cover!
