elcome to our May edition.

We recently moved our daughter down south for her new job (how dare she leave Yorkshire!). She doesn’t have a car but there were endless options for transport to work including buses every 7 minutes, trains every 15 minutes and all transport was pretty cheap. I completely understand that the population is denser in the towns and cities of the south-east but imagine how much easier it would be in this area if we had even half that amount of public transport! Without car ownership, many areas are ridiculously difficult to reach. In my village, we can get the bus on Tuesdays - and I think that’s it! And it is incredibly difficult for our young people who don’t yet drive to gain any sort of independence or jobs, and parents generally provide the means to reach friends and activities in town. In fact, in 2018 the Yorkshire Post reported that transport spending in Yorkshire fell by £18 per person in the previous year, whilst in London spending increased by £90 per person. Come on local government we need to keep our young people working in Yorkshire and helping to grow our economy, but without proper transport how can they be expected to get the best jobs? We might not have great transport links but we definitely do have great food and drink! I do love this time of year. The whole of Ryedale is awash with fantastic local suppliers, producers and retailers. There is so much to enjoy from pubs and restaurants to shops, cafes and farm shops. Make sure you make time to visit the Malton Food Lovers Festival on the

An update from Malton in Bloom

Orchard Fields BEFORE

M

alton In Bloom has been awarded a grant of £5,000 following a community vote to TransPennine Express’s Transform Grants Fund. The Fund supports projects that improve the environment, promote social inclusion, and/or tackle youth unemployment. It is hoped to spend the award on something specific and substantial that will provide a focal point for Malton. Malton in Bloom 2019 will be welcoming back Plantscape to provide the hanging and barrier baskets that fill the town with colour in the summer and have been a standout feature of the In Bloom project. In the market place there are plans to refresh the planters.

Orchard Fields AFTER of a makeover. Additionally, there may be further pockets of public open space that get a makeover subject to funds and volunteer input. Malton In Bloom is always grateful to hear from anyone (business, group or individual) to help with the wider project, and specific calls to action to help with gardening tasks. Details can be found on the Malton In Bloom website (maltoninbloom.co.uk) and there are profile pages on Facebook and Twitter - look up Malton In Bloom.

WORKSHOPS AT SCAMPSTON

On the back of the new housing developments, hanging basket trees will be located on the roundabouts in Broughton Road and Pasture Lane to create impactful centrepieces. New street furniture and planters will be installed at the newly created pedestrian area at the top of Newbiggin.

CYANOTYPE (SUN PRINTING) WORKSHOP

With regards community projects, Malton School will be involved with gardening projects at the school, and, whilst efforts will be concentrated on the areas worked on to date (the town entrance signs, and various public open spaces, including St Leonard’s Garden, Water Lane car park, the bus station and the railway station), other prominent sites are being worked on. Malton and District Beekeepers Association have planted up a second flower bed at the bus station. At Orchard Fields the entrance near the fire station has been worked on by volunteers and staff from Tate-Smiths - weeds have been cleared, bulbs planted, and the ground sown with wildflower seeds with the help of Malton Scouts. The plot of land at the Church Hill/ Castlegate junction has been cleared in readiness

CHARLIE’S COLUMN Service with a Smile

We all expect excellent customer service nowadays. We have certain expectations to be met; a friendly, welcoming feel on arrival and employees ready to help you if required. I think that’s why anything less that the bare minimum can lead to dissatisfaction. Luckily this hasn’t been the case in my experience of shopping in Ryedale. According, to 2017 statistics, 1 happy customer leads them to tell 9 friends, often resulting in more happy customers. I can’t recall being unsatisfied with any of my local shops, which really reinforces how well off we are here in Ryedale. There are lots of places in Malton and surrounding areas where I have had great experiences as a customer. These include Lloyds Pharmacy, who do invaluable work sorting out my medication every week, Chapter One who’s friendly staff and great food is consistently brilliant. The Patisserie is somewhere me, my Mum and Grandad love visiting on a Wednesday and are remembered by name. And I’m always in safe hands at Cutthroat Cartel. On a recent visit to The Patisserie, it was only me and Mum visiting, leaving the staff concerned about Grandad (who was fine). It was a lovely feeling to know that they were genuinely worried and that we had become such regular weekly visitors that they always recognised us. Outstanding service should be the priority for any retail business but to keep that up each week, make actual bonds with customers so they look forward to each visit and feel welcome is another thing entirely. It’s only when you realise you are getting the latter customer service that you recognise just how lucky you are, especially when they are on your doorstep. 24 | Handy Mag | May 2019

Help Raise £90,000

U

To Save Rosedale Abbey Church

p to 30 Rosedale Abbey residents will exhibit their wedding dresses this month for a 9 day, fundraising festival. The little village in the middle of the North York Moors needs to raise at least £90,000 to save its church from closure. The show will Rosedale newly-weds Frederick be a vintage and Strickland Weighell and Hannah modern mix. One McNeil at Thorgill House in 1919. dress dates from the 1930s and another is a replica of the dress the Duchess of Kent wore on her wedding day in York in the 1960s. Resident Linda Blackburne, one of the organisers, said: “We put out a request for dresses on Facebook and we’ve had a fantastic response. We hope to show up to 30 dresses and possibly one groom’s uniform - although the men have been a bit slow in coming forward with their wedding day attire. Supporters of the Save Rosedale Church campaign have been climbing into lofts to find old suitcases of wedding dresses which haven’t been looked at for years. It’s going to be a really fun, nostalgic event!” The church will be decorated with flowers and the dresses will be accompanied by descriptions and stories. There will also be a display of wedding photographs from the Rosedale History Society archive and a display of the history of wedding flowers.

The roof of the 180-year-old St Mary and St Lawrence Church must be completely replaced because of rotten timbers. Rafters, slates, beam ends, wall plates, roof battens and leadwork all need replacing and a leaning turret needs straightening. More damage might be revealed when the roof is opened up. The old church is steeped in history; built on the site of a nuns’ Cistercian priory which was founded in Rosedale in 1154. Parts of the priory are still on view in the church today – two huge, ogival window heads; a decaying window in the vestry; the stern warning ‘Omnia Vanitas’ (all is vanity) above the north door and a stone chair in the sanctuary. Outside is the ancient stair turret and a stone coffin. St Mary and St Lawrence Church, Rosedale Abbey. Photo Paddy Chambers

Last year the residents raised £4,813 at a flower festival. So far, they have raised £22,798 and hope to attract grants to help them reach the £90,000 target. This year’s festival will be a cross-community effort with help from Pickering Flower Club and the loan of mannequins from Ryedale Folk Museum in Huttonle-Hole and Thirsk Church.

Entry to the festival will be free but visitors will be encouraged to make donations.

The festival opens with a preview evening at 6pm on 24th May and entertainment by the Northern Ryedale Singers followed by the exhibition of dresses from 25th May to 2nd June at Rosedale Abbey church.

A Renewal of Vows service on 2nd June at 10.30am will be led by the Vicar, Father Bill, for couples who want to bless their marriage and rekindle their love towards each other.

For more information please contact The Revd David Haddon-Reece, Chair of the Save Rosedale Church Committee or Linda Blackburne, Festival Organiser: 01751 417833 or linda.blackburne@icloud.com

HELP TO KEEP HISTORY ALIVE

estled in a garden beside Pickering Beck, Beck Isle Museum is a Grade II* listed Georgian building, displaying and caring for over 50,000 objects relating to the history of Pickering and the surrounding area. The Museum contains period rooms, a pub, workshops and shops including a chemist’s and a gentleman’s outfitters. Behind the house there are workshops illustrating trades such as the blacksmith and the wheelwright and an open-air exhibition of horse-drawn agricultural machinery. Beck Isle Museum was set up in 1967 by volunteers and has been run by volunteers for the last 52 years. Now overseen by a professional Museum Manager, the Museum continues to depend on volunteers for its day-to-day operation and governance. And this is where you come in! Beck Isle needs new people to bring their skills and enthusiasm to help us to keep the Museum open for local people, visitors to the area, school parties and outreach to care homes for elderly people. Can you help? Every day we need friendly faces on the reception desk to welcome our visitors.

Without these important people the Museum couldn’t open its doors. We also need people with practical skills, whether this is maintaining our agricultural machinery, keeping the building well-maintained or demonstrating heritage crafts. We need people with business/administration and IT skills to serve as trustees and to keep the organisation running. At the moment, we are particularly looking for someone with strong financial skills to serve as Treasurer – could this be you? nheritance Tax. A death tax on the wealthy has been around for centuries. But nowhere near enough people realise the importance of sorting out an Inheritance Tax plan. Far too many people still ignore it, leaving their families with a whopping tax bill when they die. Currently, anything you own above £325,000 is taxed at 40% when you die. Bear in mind, you’ll have already paid tax on all this stuff at least once in your lifetime. Probably more. From 2021, an extra £175,000 allowance may become available for some who are leaving their main residence to direct descendants. But that will almost certainly he swallowed up house price increases. And can you really trust Government promises? They say Inheritance Tax helps distribute wealth more fairly. But should ordinary families really have to contribute when the Government wastes hundreds of

billions of pounds every year? There’s no wonder some decide they’d rather take action regarding who benefits from their money when they die. Avoiding Inheritance Tax means your money can go towards the things your family needs or wants. Your grandchild’s first car, the dream holiday they’ve been looking at, a new home…The possibilities are endless, it just takes a few simple steps in the right direction to avoid or reduce the Inheritance Tax you’ll pay when you die. Why be smart with your money all your life if a massive chunk of it will be lost when you die? There are many SIMPLE & LEGAL ways to avoid Inheritance Tax, or at least soften the blow for your family. If you’d rather your money stays with your family, and not the Tax Man, you need to take action NOW. PenLife have straight-talking Inheritance Tax specialists who can help you secure your family’s future.

Spotlight On... Andrew Harper-Walker

But “After the death of a friend of mine, I decided to slow down and make more time for personal life” says Andrew. He found he was working all hours of the day and travelling great distances to and from his home, which was all taking its toll. As a result, Andrew wanted to sell the business. However customers and staff have convinced Andrew to stay. The Patisserie is an integral part of the local community, offering a cosy place to meet up with friends and family over some real home baking.

T

his month, our spotlight is on Andrew Harper-Walker, the owner of a much-loved local business, The Patisserie Malton.

Andrew’s journey hasn’t always been easy, and he’s had to overcome plenty of obstacles to reach the point he is now, both personally and for his business. When he left school, Andrew was told he would never be able to do anything more than menial work due to his dyslexia. But against all odds, he went on to successfully complete catering courses at York College and was later employed by Middlethorpe Hall. After working at various pubs and cafes, Andrew decided it was time to open his own business – a small sandwich shop in Newbiggin, which was a success. Yet, he set his sights even higher, and his love always remained in patisserie. So, he eventually secured a site on Saville Street in Malton with the help of Fitzwilliam Malton Estate and worked hard to turn the former kitchenware shop into the bustling café he envisaged. That was five years ago, and it’s become a firm local favourite for delicious coffees, teas, bakes, breakfast and lunches. However, it’s not always been plain sailing. Andrew explains that his “life had been turned upside down in the past three or four years”. In that time, he married his husband, Adam, they bought a house together and everything was going amazingly. 46 | Handy Mag | May 2019

We’re pleased to say that the business is no longer for sale. Andrew says that as well as making sure the business carries on growing, “My aim is to live life to the full, go travelling with my husband and make proper time for each other”. Andrew has recently upgraded and updated the shop, which looks amazing. He’s also looking to move closer to Malton. Despite the stress over the last few years, Andrew’s still as passionate about patisserie - forever looking for new ideas, new flavours and keep expanding an evergrowing menu for customers to enjoy. Andrew says “It’s all thanks to my amazing staff - the place wouldn’t run without them – as well as the ongoing support from customers.” You can visit The Patisserie Malton, 14 Saville Street, Monday to Saturday from 7:30am to 4:30pm.

Fresh Cherry & Almond Cake Ready in: 1 hour 40 minutes, plus cooling time | Serves 8

INGREDIENTS

• 225g unsalted butter, softened, plus extra for greasing • 225g golden caster sugar • 225g self-raising flour • 4 medium eggs, beaten • 300g fresh cherries, pitted and halved • 100g ground almonds • 150g icing sugar • Extra fresh cherries, to decorate 1. Preheat the oven to 170C, fan 150C, gas mark 3. Grease a 20cm round deep cake tin with the extra butter and line the base and sides with baking paper.

This delicious fruity cake can be served warm as a dessert or cold as a classic afternoon tea cake.

2. Place the butter and caster sugar in a large mixing bowl and using a hand-held electric mixer beat together until very pale and creamy. Gradually pour in the eggs, beating well after each addition. If the mixture starts to separate slightly, stir in a spoonful of the flour. 3. Sift over the rest of the flour and fold in gently with a metal spoon. Toss the cherries into half of the ground almonds, and fold into the mixture with the rest of the ground almonds. Spoon into the prepared cake tin and gently level the surface.

4. Bake in the preheated oven for 55 minutes to 1 hour 10 minutes, until the cake is risen, golden and a skewer inserted into the cake comes out clean. Leave to cool in the tin for 10 minutes then turn out onto a wire rack to cool. 5. Whilst the cake is still cooling make the icing: sift the icing sugar into a bowl and stir in 2-3 tbsp warm water and mix to make a thin icing. Spoon the icing over the warm cake, allowing some to drizzle down the side. Decorate with extra cherries and serve warm or cold.

TIP The fresh cherries will mostly sink during baking but this is perfectly normal, giving a moist fruity layer at the base of the cake. It’s best eaten within 2 days of baking.

SLOEMOTION - SERVING UP A TREAT

ocal gin producers, Sloemotion, will be serving up a treat with their cocktails at this year’s Malton Food Lovers Festival, working alongside Malton’s much-enjoyed Brass Castle Brewery and the artisan cider producers, Orchards of Husthwaite. There will be two Festival Bars; one will be located at the back of the wonderful Paley’s fruit and veg shop, along with a range of tempting street food sellers, with an astro turf lawn set up with deckchairs and tables to create a summer’s garden picnic-style atmosphere. The second bar will be set up with a big seating area, as last year, outside the Milton Rooms. There will be a delicious range of cocktails on offer, some of the old favourites, but some new ones too; each created using their own hedgerow spirits and all distilled at Sloemotion HQ, at Barton-leWillows, down the road from Malton. Continuing their ethos of respect for the environment, they will be aiming to use as many enviro- conscious cocktail techniques as possible such as keeping waste to a minimum, using recyclable drinkware

and using innovative dehydrated garnishes and as ever, capturing Yorkshire produce in a drink! Their popular Hedgerow Gin and it’s pink cousin, with Rhubarb and Raspberry will be available, both in cocktails and to buy in bottles from their bottle stand in Taverners Yard. Keep an eye out this year, for the new addition to their Hedgerow range; Hedgerow Botanical Vodka - this sits on the Sloemotion shelf, in the same eye-catching bottle. This is an exciting, new drink, that blurs the lines between gin and vodka. Think Hedgerow Botanical Vodka and a premium tonic, with plenty of ice and a slice of apple, or try a punchy Bloody Mary to set you up for the festival day. Rare video footage of Julian performing with the likes of Nigel Kennedy, Katherine Jenkins, Yehudi Menhuin, Joaquin Rodrigo, Cleo Laine, Stephane Grappelli and many others will be offset by Julian recounting stories and anecdotes of touring, recording sessions, concerts and TV shows as well as a taking a Question and Answer session with the audience. BEST FOOT FORWARD

tuart Moore has clients from all walks of life, across the age range, men and women: farmers, brides-to-be, diabetic patients, older ladies, runners, shop workers. He believes there are 4 main reasons why people develop problems with their feet: • a new activity such as taking up running • a new pair of shoes – perhaps for your big day • the job you do - one that maybe requires you standing for long hours • simply getting older sorry! So where do you turn? Well, to someone like Stuart Moore, a foot health professional. He can treat corns, calluses and cracked heels. But maybe it’s simply a bit of advice on a fungal nail infection. Not a problem for Stuart. “Fungal nail infections are so common, people may feel embarrassed. They mustn’t be. There is nothing I haven’t seen and there is a lot that can be done”, says Stuart.

Short Story A Bad Day for Brutus? “Look, there’s a sign for a country park,” Pauline pointed. “Let’s stop for ten minutes and let Brutus out for a tiddle.” “A bit of fresh air will do us all some good,” Neil agreed, slowing down. They had spent the bank holiday weekend camping with Neil’s brother and his family, who were the devoted owners of Brutus the lurcher although not quite devoted enough to make room for him in their own car. Neil and Pauline luckily had a roof box for all their extra camping equipment so had Brutus riding with them. Brutus had an unfortunate habit of jumping out of vehicles, so they’d been driving for an hour with the windows shut. Brutus had also spent the entire weekend luxuriating in cow fields so the air in the car was eye-wateringly pungent. They drove towards the car park entrance. As they approached the barrier a young man in a baseball cap waved his hands at them, as though warning them not to go in. “Why doesn’t he want us to go in?” Pauline asked anxiously. “Do you think it’s full?” Neil drove on. “There’s always someone about to leave if you’re patient.” “I’ll ask him, he seems pretty insistent.” Pauline began winding down her window. “You never know, there could be a wild animal on the loose.” “Round here?” Neil snorted at the suggestion. “Like what? A horde of rabid squirrels?” At the mention of squirrels, Brutus leapt through Pauline’s open window. “Stop, Neil!” Pauline screamed. “The dog’s jumped out.” “I can’t stop,” Neil said, “I’ve got cars behind me.”

The air in the car was eye-wateringly pungent. The man who’d been waving at them tapped on Neil’s window. Neil wound it down. “Mate, I tried to warn you.” He shook his head. “I’d recommend you stay in the car. It’s pretty bad,” the man grimaced. “Not sure it’s retrievable to be honest.” Neil said, feeling queasy. “Should I go forward or back?” “I’d try reversing slowly. It’s going to be nasty but at least you’re only going back over the bits that are already crushed.” The sound of scraping and dragging vibrated through every nerve in his body. Finally it ended. “That’s it mate, you’re clear,” the man said, tapping the bonnet. “Do you want to get out and have a look?” Neil did not particularly. He turned off the engine and climbed out. This was just the opportunity Brutus needed to leap back in, smearing muddy footprints all over Pauline and the upholstery. “He’s fine, he’s fine. Not a scratch on him. So what was that awful noise, Neil?”

Pauline shrieked. “We’ve run over the dog!”

Neil was just discovering that the roof box he’d forgotten all about had been two inches higher than the car park height restriction barrier. Had been, but no longer was.

Neil slammed on the brake.

By Jackie Brewster

He regretted his decision instantly. With a sickening bang, the car made impact with something large.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP

TRY THE MOORSBUS!

Around 50% of Moorsbus passengers leave their car behind, so there are fewer vehicles on the roads, less air pollution for us all to breathe., and carbon footprint is reduced. The other 50% don’t have access to a car, so Moorsbus enables them to enjoy the National Park or do everyday journeys. Moorsbus season is May 3rd to 29th September, on Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays and Bank Holidays. It’s scheduled public transport; 27 or 44 seater buses, with wheelchair access, and ENCTS passes are accepted. All-day tickets for fare-payers cost £9.50, or you can buy cheap single fares. Up to 4 children travel free with a fare-payer. Dogs are welcome, but not on the seats! You can also buy or use our tickets on the EY 128, or Reliance 31X. From Ryedale market towns you can get to lots of places including Hutton-le-Hole, Rievaulx Abbey, Danby National Park Centre, Sutton Bank, Rosedale and Dalby Forest. Moorsbus is also great for walking or running. “Suggested days out” leaflets, and timetables, are available from Libraries, or can be printed from www.moorsbus.org. Moorsbus covers 25 - 50% of costs from fares and passes. The remainder is funded by passenger donations, Parish Councils, and other fundraising. Thanks to the help of many, we are slowly expanding our season and routes each year. On board we also have a “donate ticket - not valid for travel” which really helps us. Moorsbus is organised by volunteers, and you can ring us on 01751 477216.

Contact June Emerson at Kirkbymoorside Environment Group on kmegadmin@ phonecoop.coop to find out how you can participate. 74 | Handy Mag | May 2019

he Friday Rehearsal Orchestra recently held an open rehearsal at Kirkbymoorside Memorial Hall. The orchestra played a popular programme including Beethoven’s 7th Symphony, Respighi’s ‘Ancient Airs and Dances’ and Weber’s ‘Invitation to the Dance’. An enthusiastic audience enjoyed listening to this programme of great music and joined players for refreshments after the concert. Founded in 1990, Ryedale’s only amateur orchestra meets in the Autumn and Spring at the Memorial Hall Kirkbymoorside on Fridays. Cloud 9 Windows Service with A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloud 9 Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up, we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and

I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’

I get a huge amount of business from family and friends of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 328 8213 and he’ll be happy to help!

Cloud 9 Windows are based locally and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success. ‘The truth is that it’s not just personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense.

WOODWORM IN YOUR HOME

D

by Peter Cox Ltd

ealing with woodworm can be a difficult task, as it’s often hard to identify an outbreak correctly. Woodworm is the generic term given to the wood-eating larvae and grubs of different species of wood boring beetles. They use the timber as a source of food and use it to lay their eggs in. Woodworm can spread quickly and can potentially cause severe structural and cosmetic damage if left untreated. Woodworm tend to appear between the end of March and September, when they leave the timber as an adult beetle. One sign of woodworm activity is small exit holes in the timber, but these don’t always mean that the infestation is active. The best way to spot an active infestation is to look for woodworm ‘frass’ (fine sawdust) around the exit holes. This indicates that an infestation is recent, and that woodworm larvae may still be present in the timber. Different species of woodworm vary in size, so the exit holes vary in size based on this. If you have noticed furniture or flooring is becoming weakened, it could be a sign of woodworm damage. The most common treatment process uses an insecticide applied to the affected timber. This involves spraying the infested area with a fluid that coats the surface, killing the insects before they can come out to breed - ideally this should be done by a professional. In the case of a mass outbreak of woodworm structural damage can occur and you should not even attempt the job on your own and instead got straight to a professional. If structural timber is severely damaged it may have to be replaced, historic or decorative timber may be repaired using epoxy resin repair methods. We offer a free domestic survey service for homeowners covering woodworm treatments and other property preservation solutions. You can contact us on 01904 899 757. Jasper’s Diary WHAT’S SO SPECIAL ABOUT CATS? Dear Diary… Talking from a dog’s perspective, I feel like we are treated unfairly compared to cats. Take my sister Tiffin for example, she’s allowed to sleep on the bed whenever she wants, she jumps straight onto the sofa and curls up between mummy and daddy without any problem and she has her own special door so that she can come and go whenever she likes. Then when the mood takes her, she bites my tail and grabs at the hairs on my legs, mum even puts her food bowl high up so that I can’t share it, I think I have to put up with a lot! So, you can imagine my shock when I found that there is a separate cat waiting area at the practice with posters saying that we are “Cat Friendly” as we have an International Cat Care Silver Award. There’s even a shelf to put the cat basket on so that the cat can look down on everyone! Should we really be encouraging this idea that they are more important than everyone else? Apparently, they get nervous when they go to the vets so need some extra TLC, there’s also a cat only bedroom which I’m not allowed in because it’s supposed to be kept quiet and calm in there! The nurses say cats need to be handled calmly and carefully so they don’t get scared, to be honest I never want to cross a cat either! Jasper x

round Solution Services have had a very successful year and are looking forward to transforming driveways, patios and gardens in the local area over the coming months. The company specialises in high quality resin bound surfaces and has grown over the last year to now employ 5 people, all from the local area. In the current business climate we’re very proud of how the business has grown and with full order books we’re looking forward to a great spring and summer.” Ground Solution Services have recently completed work for St Monica’s Hospital in Easingwold where they improved the surface of the overflow parking area. The Hospital have been extremely pleased with the work and said they would recommend Ground Solution Services for future work. with straight lines aplenty, so here are some suggestions for achieving the effect you want. Decide on the plants you like and that will suit your garden but keep to as few different types as possible. The biggest impact will be achieved if you are selective, for example concentrating on ornamental grasses.

here is increasing enthusiasm for a more minimalist garden style, where fewer plants have greater individual impact in a more designed situation

Also key is clever use of straight lines, ideally with a few right angles too. Edges must be sharply defined, perhaps using sleepers, other timber or angled metal. Keep plants well back from the border edging so these lines are not interfered with. Colours should fit your preferences and the surroundings but restrict the number of colours for a calmer and simpler effect. Existing features such as sheds or fences can be recoloured or painted to

fit in with the colour scheme – otherwise, their current colour will have to be included in that scheme. A stunning minimalist effect can be achieved by using a single type of plant and container – for example, conifers in terracotta containers. The only variation is in the size of the conifer: all colours, textures and plants are the same. Buy different sizes of the same conifer type and clip regularly to maintain the size difference or buy one size and trim lightly to achieve the desired look. Green, in the form of foliage, helps add a feeling of tranquillity to a minimalist garden so include it, perhaps as a neatly clipped box hedging or as a few bay lollipops in angular containers. Containers must be very plain, ideally straightsided angular styles in a single colour. An evenly spaced trio of pots, each with a single central plant, provides a perfect choice of container planting. If you like topiary stick to simple tightly clipped

spheres or ‘lollipops’, cubes or at most spirals; there is no space for a fantastically sculptured creature if you’re going minimalist! Plants with simple or angular shapes such as iris, alliums, conifers, clipped box, canna or palms are an excellent choice, but opt for personal (but simple) favourites available locally. Grass alternatives such as gravel may feature highly. Gravel needs less maintenance than grass, but keep it weed-free and easy-care by installing a weed-membrane (rather like woven, plastic hessian) on to the soil before putting down the gravel. Thoroughly weed the area then firm and compact well before putting the fabric down. Don’t use cheaper plastic sheeting as rain won’t penetrate. Opt for simple, classically styled garden furniture with as few colours and textures as possible and it won’t detract from the minimalist environment and look – now sit back and enjoy!
