ovember is a testing month, ever shortening days, memories of snow and ice now pending afresh and Christmas to relish (or dread). And with the economy not exactly warming the pockets, this year it comes with costs that need to be kept in check. There are quite a few hints on saving money in this edition – more efficient heating, wood-burning stoves and fuel efficient driving to name but a few. The main thing is to look local for products and services as our local businesses offer very competitive prices… less driving = less fuel = cheaper! I actually quite like November and the excuse it gives me to cosy-up in front of the fire, with feel-good snacks that I probably shouldn’t eat – especially in the run up to Christmas excesses! With the bad weather also comes muddy dogs! We routinely give our two a hose down after a muddy walk. One of them loves this, but the other (our black

Luckily for him he has a coat a bit like Teflon and rarely gets so bad; whereas our Golden Retriever has a coat with remarkable water and mud gathering capabilities, and with his significant size it is simply extraordinary the mess he can create. Stuart Elvidge Joinery...

..investing in the future When Stuart Elvidge was last featured in The Handy Mag two years ago, he was at the start of an exciting journey. That journey has now paid off in the growth of his business, Stuart Elvidge Joinery. Two years ago Stuart introduced project management to his services, enabling him to take on bigger projects – and the customer to simply relax and leave everything to him.

A quality, reliable & professional service carrying out all your joinery and small build projects to the highest of standards COMPETITIVE PRICING PROJECT MANAGEMENT

That has been very successful and now Stuart, and a team of self-employed tradesmen he drafts in as needed, carry out full-building renovations, small extensions, flooring, kitchens and bathrooms. Stuart is also a Veluxapproved installer of roof windows. Customer service is essential – everyone working for Stuart wears a uniform, they take care to give a friendly service and above all, do everything completely professionally. The fact that Stuart Elvidge Joinery emerged unscathed from the recession is testament to the quality of the service – not to mention wise business choices. Stuart is keen to make a positive contribution to the community, and ensure he maintains full control over his business as it grows. That’s why, when it came to expanding the team, rather than employing a qualified joiner with their own ways of doing things, Stuart instead chose to take on an apprentice, Curtis Atkinson, 16. He’s one of only five Yorkshire businesses to do so through the scheme run by the CITB – the national body for construction skills. However, Stuart believes it’s a sensible business move as well as a worthwhile investment in the skills of the next generation. Stuart said: “I wanted to make sure that any work that

was done under my name was done in a way I’d be happy with. So I’m passing on my skills and trying to introduce Curtis to the best way, I believe, of running a joinery business.” Two years ago The Handy Mag congratulated Stuart on the arrival of his new baby son, Charlie. Charlie is now a lively two-year-old who’s already showing some aptitude in joinery. Stuart said: “Charlie has a full toolkit of his own, and he was out this weekend helping me sand and paint the fence at our house. He’s getting quite good, especially at the sanding!” And if that doesn’t keep Stuart busy enough, he’s also still involved in the Scarborough and Ryedale Mountain Rescue team, who were featured in the local press earlier this year after their busiest-ever 24 hours, in which they carried out four rescues! For a friendly, local joinery service with guaranteed professionalism and quality, contact Stuart on 01944 759241 or 07946516336.

HOMES & GARDENS

Warm up for winter Katherine Sorrell’s ideas for overhauling your heating will help you make it through till next summer…

by Katherine Sorrell

W

hen long nights and frosty mornings make it feel as if winter is never going to end, it’s time to cosy up with a blazing fire, warm radiators or a welcoming stove. There’s no doubt that we’re all going to be thinking carefully about how we heat our homes this coming winter – and sensible measures such as good insulation, draught excluders and thermostats will help keep both costs and CO2 emissions down. But no matter how many extra jumpers we put on, there’s bound to come a time when we can’t do without some form of home heating. And since we’ve got to pay for it, we might as well make sure that it’s as efficient and attractive as possible. First: the traditional fireplace. Many of us have one and it’s usually a focal point of a living room – despite the fact that open fires are shockingly poor heat producers, operating at around just 15-20% energy efficiency. If your fireplace as a whole is unappealing (whether or not you want to use the fire as a form of heating), you can usually update it relatively easily just by changing the surround, hearth and/ or mantelpiece: altering the colours, materials and proportions really does make a world of difference. If you haven’t got a chimney, though, the good news is that you can still have a fire. Balanced flue gas fires require a gas supply and an outside wall on which to mount the fire, while powerflue (or fan flue) gas fires have the same requirements, and also need mains electricity. No outside wall? No problem. Electric fires can be used regardless of chimneys, flues and outside walls, and can look surprisingly attractive compared to

12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

the ghastly models of old. And some gas fires use a catalytic converter to turn combustion gases into harmless carbon dioxide, so no flue is required. Because no energy is lost through the flue, they are also 100% heat-efficient. The big news in heating at the moment, however, is the wood-burning stove. In looks alone, they’re huge attention-grabbers: traditional styles have timeless appeal, while hole-inthe-wall or centrepiece versions fit wonderfully into a modern setting. And by burning wood from sustainable, local sources you’re not increasing your carbon emissions (for more information, go to www.nef.org.uk/ logpile). Last, but not least, if you’ve got central heating, don’t forget your radiators. Are they giving off enough heat for the room? You can help prevent heat loss – especially on an outside wall – by fitting tin foil (or special radiator reflectors) behind them to reflect the heat back in. But if they’re simply not effective enough then consider replacing them with a more powerful version, perhaps in a dramatic modern style or in a classic column shape. They are both practical and good-looking, and will last you many long winters yet to come.

hatever the job, however small or grand, they can give it all the professionalism and expertise they have. Lately they have been working on retiling a bathroom, building a small extension and numerous renovation projects. Larger projects are also well within the Repair and Restoration capability – they have worked on barn conversions, rebuilding projects, huge extensions and brand new builds. Included in their large range of specialisms is working with lime mortar on repointing and lime rendering – a popular service for many people who are looking for good value ways to give their homes a facelift. Repair and Restoration are also Sovereign-approved damp proofing and timber treatment specialists, meaning you can be assured of an effective and guaranteed service. And among the many expert tradesmen on the Repair and Restoration team are skilled joiners who, in the company’s own on-site joinery workshop, can create bespoke windows, doors, stair-

cases or any other wooden items for the home. They are currently busy working to a tight deadline on a property which needs repairs to 36 sash windows – all of which are being carried out on site. Repair and Restoration was set up in Malton 22 years ago by John Towse and Michael Caffrey. Their staff now include John’s sons, Stephen and John.

Passionate about your project, from start to finish Whatever your project, Repair and Restoration’s experts will work closely with you from the moment you’ve started to have ideas. They will give you advice on what’s possible, what will and won’t work, and draw from their 40 years of experience in the trade, to make sure you get the best from your project. All quotes are free, and price lists can be fully itemised, giving you tight control over the budget with the option to hold back on certain aspects of a project if need be. You’ll be fully informed about the project’s progress, have all the opportunities you need to answer questions, and if something unexpected arises that could increase the costs, you’ll be fully informed and involved in any decisions that need to be made – well in advance of the arrival of the bill! The full team of tradesmen mean everything from the building and joinery through electrics and plumbing to the final redecoration and tidying up will be taken care of by the company – so all you have to do is relax and let them get on with improving your home.

Quality assurances

Finally, one more customer was so delighted with Repair and Restoration that they nominated them for the Builder of the Year, saying: “We had to move into the house with work still in progress. Repair and Restoration worked around us, allowing us our own space, but still persevering with the finishing touches. We quite enjoyed this period. “Repair and Restoration set out from the start to work to the highest standards of construction. They were always proud to show off their work and take time to discuss the project with us, listening to any concerns and talking through aspects of the build. We always dealt with the same tradesmen and they became our friends.”

Repair and Restoration have a wall-full of accreditations, qualifications and awards. They hold an FMB Master Bond Warranty, and they are members of the Federation of Master Builders – a thorough vetting and guarantee system which adds up to more peace of mind for the customer. They are also NAPIT registered for electrical work and several of the team are members of the York Guild of Building, and there are at least six holders of the CSCS Heritage Gold Card – meaning their skills have been accredited by experts including architects to be good enough to work on heritage properties. A Malton customer wrote to Repair and Restoration: “Thank you very much for all the work done and the excellent manner in which all your employees worked while on the site. We were very impressed and pleased with their work and approach to all the aspects of the job.” Another happy customer from Malton wrote: “I would like to say how pleased both my wife and I were with the workmanship and cleanliness of John and his mate in the care they took, both in the house and outside. It shows that workmen of this calibre are still to be found.”

FOOD

Pork

Goulash

01904 468777

Although originating from Hungary Goulash is a popular warming stew made in many Northern European countries. It is traditionally made with beef although depending on which meat tends to be reared locally it is also made with pork. Some cooks make it as a thick stew, others as a soup – I usually use my mum’s recipe which is for a stew but turn leftovers into a soup with the addition of some stock and chunks of cooked potato. My mum is from Germany and this is how she taught me to make it.

Serves 6 (or 4 with leftovers to make soup) 1 kilo of diced stewing pork 3 green peppers, deseeded and roughly chopped 2 onions, peeled and finely chopped 6 tomatoes roughly chopped 1 tin chopped tomatoes 4 cloves of garlic, thinly sliced 1 tbsp tomato puree 3 dill gherkins, finely chopped 2 tsp caraway seeds 2 tbsp sweet paprika 1 tsp sugar Salt and black pepper to taste Olive oil To serve: Small pot of sour cream Small bunch of fresh dill, chopped Tagliatelle noodles  I usually cook this on the hob so you’ll need a large lidded pan or casserole dish that you can use on the hob. Failing that use a large frying pan and then transfer to an ovenproof dish to cook in the oven.  Heat the pan over a medium to high heat, add a glug of olive oil and quickly seal the pork, don’t worry if it goes watery and doesn’t brown, that’s fine.  Add the rest of the ingredients, give it all a good 20 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

stir and wait for it to come up to the boil. As soon as it does, cover the pan and turn down to a low simmer. Cook for about an hour, stirring frequently and checking it isn’t drying out – you want a rich sauce so add a little water if it looks dry, or if it looks too watery turn the heat up a little to reduce the sauce. If you are cooking it in the oven set the temperature to 180C/160 fan/gas mark 5 and cook for an hour. After this time check the pork for tenderness, depending on the cut it may need a further 30 minutes. Also check the seasoning. If you are cooking it in the oven I would allow a longer cooking time, up to 2 hours. When the meat is tender you can cook the noodles according to the instruction on the packet. At this stage if your sauce is a bit thin you can leave the lid off the pan and reduce it by turning the heat up a little but stir it occasionally to check it doesn’t burn on the bottom! When you are ready to serve, drain the pasta and pile onto a serving dish, cover this with the goulash and top with some sour cream and chopped dill. If you do have any left-overs for soup, make sure you heat the goulash with the stock and cooked potatoes until piping hot. You will need to check the seasoning again before serving with a swirl of sour cream.

Children in Need

Must-read titles

Recent years have seen a massive rise in the popularity of books depicting tortured childhoods - and although this may not be the happiest of subjects, many of these titles are fascinating, well-written and extremely emotive. This month, to celebrate Children in Need, we’ve put together a selection of the best books in this genre.

I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou

An incredible story about the transformation of a quiet racism victim into a self-assured and confident young woman. As the first in a six volume series, here Maya Angelou tells the tale of her coming-of-age in awful circumstances, but finds strength in the birth of her son to discover her inner voice and passion for independence. Bad Blood by Lorna Sage

A fantastic memoir depicting three generations of the Sage family, and the family history which led to her own mother’s belief that Lorna was born with “bad blood”. Fear not, there is light at the end of the tunnel as Lorna’s life turns around with the arrival of a new husband, baby and university – and life away from the miserable Shropshire village she calls home. 22 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

First They Killed my Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers

sadistic torture. Not a pleasant or an easy read, but nonetheless fascinating.

by Loung Ung

Penned by a survivor of the Pol Pot regime, Loung Ung spent the first part of her childhood growing up in comfort as the daughter of a Government Official, but when the Khmer Rouge stormed Phnom Penn in 1975, her life was transformed beyond belief. This title recalls her life in work camps, separated from her family and friends, and being trained as a child soldier, as she somehow found the bravery to fight on in search of a new life. A Child Called It by Dave Pelzer

One of the most famous titles depicting a shattered childhood, this is the horrific story of a boy referred to by his alcoholic mother as ‘an it’ and who suffered at her hands years of horrific abuse and

. Just out.

A Kestrel for a Knave by Barry Hines

Life is tough for Billy Casper; brought up in a Yorkshire mining village, mistreated at home and in trouble at school. But life takes on a new meaning when he finds a kestrel and rears him as his pet ‘Kes’. Sad, intense and touching, this novel manages to conjure inspiration and awe through the eyes of an unlikely protagonist. Glass Castle by Jeannette Walls

This may be yet another account of a tortured childhood, but as a brilliantlywritten memoir the tale is uplifting and told with humour and strength. Raised in a less-than-loving family, the author describes her upbringing faced with poverty, abuse and neglect, yet she writes with seeming acceptance and compels the reader from start to finish.

Breaking Night by Liz Murray

Born to an addict father and a mother who spent most of her daughter’s childhood in and out of a mental institute, Liz Murray ended up on the streets of New York at the tender age of 15. Desperate to salvage her life from turning into that of her parents, the author recounts her tale of how she enrolled in school, achieved a scholarship from the New York Times and went on to graduate from Harvard. A truly inspirational read.

Gaia Holistix A (Mind Body Conciousness) Transformational Healing Practice, School & Retreat Centre

E

very experience we have, good or bad, depends on our thoughts. And, fortunately for us, with a little effort and attention, our thoughts can be changed – meaning we can transform our experiences. That is the principle that underpins Gaia Holistix, a partnership of two experienced healers who offer unique transformational healing and personal development. They set visitors free from their self limiting thought patterns and beliefs, which are causing suffering or holding them back, at their peaceful retreat centre near Malton. Owner Paul Crick, who has spent 35 years learning healing techniques, offers the Gaia-Now MBSC (mind, body, spirit, consciousness) practice which he developed himself in 2003. Challenges like stress and tension, procrastination and low self-esteem can all be tackled through this unique programme, offering the chance to fulfil your dreams, achieve your goals and live life to the full. Whether you attend a Breakthrough Day or a retreat, you will receive a consultation, energy healing and intensive personal development. Concluding with a meditative reprogramming session to boost self awareness and self-esteem, and a hands-on physical healing session that helps resolve physical and body-image issues. The aim of the healing is to “weed the garden” of the mind – that is, remove all the negative thoughts and issues that may be preventing you from achieving your goals in life and causing your problems. Paul said: “I show people how our thoughts and inner dialogues are creating our reality all the time. That means all our problems and experiences are coming from the way we are thinking and when we take responsibility for our own lives, we can bring about lasting transformation. “Many people’s lives become stuck, revolving around one unpleasant experience, which happened in the past and no longer actually exists. “When you free yourself from that, you can enjoy the present moment exactly as it is. “We set people free and put them back in the driving seat of their own lives.” Together with his partner Vivien McGlashan, a healer with eight years’ experience, Paul looks forward to welcoming anyone who would like to bring the power of healing into their lives.

ello again.

November… time to get the log basket filled, the woolly socks out and pack away the skimpy skirts and sandals. But more importantly, November is a time for Rockets and Screechers to light up the sky, for the whole community to gather around Guy Fawkes’ burning embers and to share a toffee apple with the neighbours. Bonfire night is one among many of my favourite events of the year, I just love seeing everybody together, young children’s mittens clutching onto their parent’ coat and the joy of writing your name with a sparkler (something I refuse to grow out of!). In my village we are having our yearly village bonfire, an evening where everyone trudges through knee-high mud wearing their wellies and thermal t-shirts, to watch the firework display whilst eating their ketchup-caked hotdog. Though as cold as it may be I love everything about the evening, from boots to bobble hats, even the annual horse drugging to keep them calm over the sky-lighted hours. Besides Bonfire Night, November is an important month for other reasons, for Ireland November 1st is the beginning of winter, for other European countries, the 14th of November recognises the snowy season. But I’m sure we all feel the chill in the air as the snow dawns nearer. For the country-loving folk, this is the time to ‘send away’ the ram for spring time lambs. But with the end of the year coming nearer, so does St Nick. Personally I cannot believe how early some shops bring out their fairy baubles, but the atmosphere on a white Christmas morning is well worth the preparation. Besides, the end of the year means roll on January Sales! So pack away your pumpkins and prepare you extra layers.

Start taking the tablets by Nick Teasdale at tknowIT, www.tknowit.net

Tablet computers, like SmartPhones, have been around for years but in both areas they were typically expensive and not simple or intuitive to use.

T

hanks to Apple we now have the iPhone and iPad which just about anyone can pick up and use within a few minutes. This has led to a range of products trying to compete in this rapidly expanding market sector. Apple controls both the hardware and software with their iOS based iPhone and iPad devices. They are easy to use and rarely need to be rebooted. The Apps market for both devices is mature and vast. One of the downsides to an iPad is that it does not support ‘flash’ video or websites. Ok for a phone but not on a device many will be looking to use as their main surfing device. Microsoft Windows Phone 7 (WP7) running on SmartPhones from the likes of Samsung, HTC and LG has also proved to be stable and responsive. The Apps market for the WP7 is growing quickly and based on the same model as the Apple Apps store where programs are typically free or relatively low cost and install quickly. (See my separate review of WP7) Likewise Windows 7 for PCs, laptops, netbooks and tablets is less prone to crash or freeze, compared with Windows XP or Vista, and is typically much more responsive. The Acer Iconia W500 is a good windows 7 based tablet choice. HP launched their Windows based Slate, which I am not even sure launched into the UK, before releasing their WebOS based TouchPad and announcing that they were reviewing their position in computer market. So TouchPad users may find their device gets no updates, support or

30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Apps. Many reviewers also suggested it was a bit sluggish. RIM, who makes the Blackberry range, controls both the hardware & software with their Blackberry phones and PlayBook tablet. The tablet gets mixed reviews, has an Apps store but currently is only available with a 7″ screen. The majority of other tablets run Android by Google. As they can’t use Apple iOS and Microsoft license Windows 7 and Phone 7 for a fee then using Android can reduce the overall price of the tablet – as it’s free. Android 3 was designed for tablets whilst previous versions were designed, developed and flourished on smaller screened SmartPhones. Tablet makers can tweak Android and add their own features and Apps to it. This may help to explain why reviews of Android Tablets suggest that performance and stability can vary from brand to brand when, on paper, the specifications of the hardware are the same. The Apps store for Android is mature thanks to its growth on SmartPhones over the last few years. My shortlist of Android tablets would be the ASUS TF101 Transformer (optional keyboard/ extended battery), Samsung GalaxyTab (if they get the injunctions lifted) and the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet (with optional digitiser pen) The Tablet market is likely to expand and evolve. Microsoft Windows 8, due for release in 2012, is heavily influenced by ‘touch’. Some vendors are offering interesting features such as Stylus, fingerprint swipe, keyboard attachments. They are an excellent alternative to a NetBook for web browsing and checking emails but it may be another year or so before we can throw away the laptops and desktop PCs.

MOTORING

YOUR CAR

...in safe hands

B

MC Motor Engineers is a family business which is this month celebrating a successful first year’s trading – with a big thank you to the customers who made it a success. Most of husband-and-wife team Kerry and Barry McWilliams’ business is now coming through referral and returning customers – testament to the quality of customer service they provide. They are also delighted to report that in a year’s trading they haven’t had a single customer complaint. In terms of customer service, the main area in which BMC specialises is in overcoming all those niggles that add up to a bad experience with a car mechanic. First of all, there’s no inconvenience of being without your car for a day – BMC’s courtesy car is at your disposal as long as your own car is in the shop. Secondly, you won’t leave BMC with the feeling you were overcharged or baffled with technical talk. Barry makes a point of ensuring customers understand exactly what the problem is with their car, and what repairs are needed. He’ll even take you into the workshop and demonstrate the issue, with the car elevated on the ramp if necessary. Finally, you’ll receive a warm welcome, a cup of tea, and even if you’ve just nipped in with a quick query, free advice on all things motoring. Kerry, who takes care of the office, administration and accounts for the business, says women especially are reassured by BMC’s helpful attitude and the fact that there is a woman there to greet them. Barry is a highly qualified mechanic who trained locally and previously worked at the local Volvo dealer where he became an expert in Volvo servicing. He can service and repair all makes of vehicle, and specialises in keeping 4x4s in good condition. Electrical problems – most mechanics’ worst nightmare – is another of Barry’s specialities, who relishes a challenge and genuinely loves tinkering. In readiness for the winter, BMC is offering

Top 10 Tips for

Improving Fuel Efficiency

We’ve all watched helplessly as the cost of fuel has rocketed over the last few years.

D

1. Check the internet. Sites like oes anyone remember when www.petrolprices.com are it cost less than invaluable as they’ll not only tell £1 per litre? Believe you where to find the cheapest it or not, according petrol near your postcode, to the AA, it was only they’ll also tell you the highest, a little more than two lowest and average prices in years ago in May your area. 2009. Whilst we can’t 2. Drive more efficiently. Don’t ‘warm up’ the engine, Here are our top 10 accelerate gradually (try to tips for improving fuel stay under 3000 revs), avoid efficiency. sharp braking, drive in the correct gear and at your car’s optimum speed. Stay aware of your positioning and the road conditions ahead to avoid sudden movement. 3. Don’t fill your tank. Remember that fuel weighs a lot so find a balance between not having to go to the petrol station that often but not carrying a full tank either, rather aiming for between one half and three quarters. 4. Streamline your car. Again, weight is a huge factor in fuel efficiency. Don’t keep a buggy, golf clubs or other unnecessary items in the car. Take off roof racks which add wind resistance and force your engine to work harder. 5. Keep a regular eye on your tyre pressure. Check your car’s manual to find out what the levels should be and 36 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ensure they don’t dip lower than this. This will mean your car needs less oomph to keep it moving. 6. Turn off the air conditioning. Many cars have air conditioning on by default and it does use an incredible amount of fuel so make sure it’s turned off unless you really need it. Similarly, use your demisters and heated windscreens sparingly. However if it’s really hot do use your air conditioning because driving with open windows causes drag and is even less cost effective. 7. Avoid super fuels. Unless you have a highly tuned performance car, the difference isn’t noticeable enough to warrant the extra cost. 8. Choose where you fill up. Again, check out www. petrolprices.com and plan ahead. Fill up at a supermarket station when you’re doing your regular shop, particularly if they have a petrol promotion running and if you have a loyalty card attached to the supermarket. Don’t be caught out with an empty tank when your only option is a motorway service station. 9. Combine short trips into one longer one. Cold starts are inefficient so plan ahead and try to do more than one errand when you go out. 10. Last but not least, turn the engine off if stuck in a jam. The general rule of thumb is if you think you’re going to be stationary for more than three minutes, it’s worth switching off.

Stirling

Qualities T

he castle, perched high on the cliff top above the city, has been home to some of Scotland’s most famous, and infamous, figures. The infant son of Mary, Queen of Scots, was housed there when he was crowned in the Holy Rood Church as James the Sixth of Scotland, later to follow Elizabeth the First on the throne of England, uniting the two crowns. The church is one of only two surviving buildings in the United Kingdom where a coronation has taken place. Westminster Abbey is the other. From the castle ramparts, visitors can view seven battlefields, all of which played a significant part in Scotland’s history, such as Stirling Bridge (1297) and Bannockburn (1314). Below the castle, mediaeval buildings include churches, mansions and public houses. There are special walks designed to ensure visitors don’t miss any of the important sites. The Old Town Walk takes the same route as that covered by kings and commoners alike when moving from the town to the castle. This route was only changed in the 19th century when the city centre was developed. The Black Walk follows the town’s 16th century walls, with purple plaques giving details of the 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Always a bustling town, it is Scotland’s newest city. buildings of interest. Near to the castle is the Old Town Jail, which was once a Victorian reform prison – a place of misery, hardship and cruelty. This is now an interesting and not to be missed tourist attraction. Stirling is also home to many haunted buildings, most notably The Settle Inn, scene of ghostly manifestations. But with so many battles and murders taking place over the centuries, it’s not surprising that the ghosts walk – and you can walk with them on an eerie night tour designed to take in the spectral corners where spirits await. There is even a mystery walk, where amateur sleuths

can solve a set of twenty clues on the Eye-Spy Stirling Trail No visitor to Stirling can be unaware of the part that William Wallace played in the history of the Scottish nation. The National Wallace Monument was erected in his honour. The tower is 220ft high and, from the top of its 246 steps, views of the glorious Stirling countryside and beyond reward those who make the climb. Don’t miss the ruined Cambuskenneth Abbey situated nearby. This was where Robert the Bruce held his Parliament in 1326 and is the burial place of King James III. The vibrant city centre has quality shops, restaurants and a varied nightlife. But there is more to Sterling than the city itself. The surrounding scenery is astoundingly beautiful. Why not walk through woodland and along the river, taking in such sights as Stirling Old Bridge and the Beheading Stone? J Parnott, York.” The Direct Boiler’s experience also means typical boiler problems can be averted, so you’ll have fewer repairs and less hassle to deal with once your boiler is installed. For example, in very cold weather, many boilers develop problems with the condensing pipe freezing – meaning the entire boiler shuts down. HOMES & GARDENS According to my diary – and this seems rather improbable, so I double-checked – summertime only ended on 30 October both in Britain and the rest of Europe, which I suppose makes 1 November the second day of winter.

November

D

id you notice how much chillier it is all of a sudden? No, neither did I. But, more out of habit than for any practical reason, I lit the fire anyway. The habit goes back to my childhood. I grew up in an enormous draughty old house with nothing as new-fangled as central heating but with an open fire in almost every room. (A couple of the bedrooms had gas fires but they were so ancient that daring to light them would have been a leap of faith too great to risk.) And I can tell you from a lot of personal experience that in practical terms at least, open fires are more trouble than they’re worth. Only the drawing room and parlour fires were lit regularly: cleaning the grates, bringing in the kindling and coal, and laying the fires was my chore every morning from the age of about eight. It wasn’t a big chore, but having to go out into the dark damp night to refill the coalscuttles was a constant source of resentment. Bedrooms, thankfully, were unheated and freezing, since in those days we believed in warm beds in cold rooms: quilts, blankets, thick flannel pyjamas and, for the feeblest, hot water bottles supplied the place of radiators perfectly adequately. It wasn’t a big chore – certainly not as annoying as trying to wash up Sunday lunch with a hot water system that didn’t actually produce hot water; and I wouldn’t have minded it if the open fires had actually heated the rooms they 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

were meant to heat. But they didn’t. The house was over 150 years old, and so were its doors and windows. All the fires did was suck the cold night air through the cracks and gaps in door and window frames to create howling draughts. If you sat near enough to the fire your front would roast while your rear froze. The hearthrugs could actually be observed progressing wormwise towards the fireplaces as the draught got underneath them. To add insult to injury, the fires also managed to deposit a fine layer of ash on every horizontal surface while covering the surrounding floors with a crunchy paving of coal dust. Not so bad on bare boards, but the ruin of any carpet. And yet I wouldn’t be without one. We don’t need one: our central heating works fine. We’re toasty, and the fire might only be lit on Christmas Day (which is also the only time of year when the old kitchen clock is wound). Because the point about a real fire is that it is beautiful. Not only does it cast a cheery glow throughout the whole room (whether your own sitting-room or, preferably, the bar of your

favourite pub), it also repays close inspection. Flames writhe and flicker; sparks fly amid loud cracks and sputters; hissing jets flare from gas pockets within the coal; logs create intriguing caves of embers that change colour as you watch; and the blaze subsides to create a hypnotic pool into which you stare entranced exactly as your caveman ancestors did millennia ago. With all this going on, who needs TV? So, open fires are a difficult to clean, time-consuming to lay and have to be regularly topped up with coal and wood. They’re not that efficient at actually warming the room, but they do make it dirty. Who cares though? It’s November – buy some logs now!

Hedge your

Boundary Marking your garden boundary with a hedge rather than a wall or fence helps to provide more gardening opportunities plus the living boundary may also be a real boon for wildlife, so if you’re thinking garden boundaries, think hedging.

I

f you want a garden boundary that looks good and is green in all senses of the word, then you can’t go far wrong with a hedge. Hedges are generally grown from container-grown plants (bought at any time of year, with wellestablished root system and living in a pot) or from ‘bare root’ plants which are perfect bought at this time of year and planted straight away. Bare root hedging is not an option available for every type of plant. Some garden centres offer it, but generally for the freshest

plants and widest selection you’re better going to a hedging specialist nursery. These plants are often quite small, but great value and soon romp away, providing you with a low-cost good looking hedge. So which should you choose? Here are some of which I’m especially fond: Hornbeam: This deciduous tree makes great classic hedging and in the autumn leaves turn an attractive bright yellow. It’s long-lived and once established makes a good www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 55

HOMES & GARDENS hedge for roosting birds. It’s easy to keep trimmed and dense, its only downside being few leaves remain in winter. Does well in sun or part shade. Beech: A tough and hardy deciduous tree that makes a great hedge. Great kept neatly clipped for a formal look. Although it does shed its leaves, they turn a wonderful tan-brown towards the end of autumn and a high percentage remain on the plants until new leaves appear in springtime. Native Hedging (including hawthorn, wild rose, guilder rose, blackthorn): Perfect for a more rural look with lots of wildlife. Native hedging is often available as a mixed selection of suitable plants, all the above planted randomly along the hedge line make a great mixed deciduous hedge which will provide shelter, nesting sites and nectar from the attractive flowers and food from the various hips and berries. Yew: Perfect for a more formal hedging. It’s evergreen and its narrow dark green leaves make a great backdrop for plants within the garden. Unlike most other evergreen hedging, if it’s allowed to grow out of hand, it does respond well to being cut back quite hard. Avoid damp sites and remember that although the end result looks great, this is one of the slower growing hedging plants. Prunus laurocerasus: Also known as the cherry laurel, it’s a large-leafed evergreen which forms a very good, dense hedge. It produces small, pretty white flowers, but if you clip the hedge 56 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

regularly you rarely see many of them. The leaves are a light, glossy green, avoiding the sombre feeling some evergreen hedges can bring. Berberis including B.darwinii: Another very dense and attractive hedge, deciduous, semi-evergreen or evergreen depending on which you choose. Berberis has plenty of spines too so is often used in ‘defensive’ planting. The flowers are small but very pretty in shades of orange and yellow. Avoid very wet soils. Euonymus japonica: A great hedging plant with evergreen leaves, many with attractive variegations bringing extra colour and interest to the boundary. Avoid a wet soil and choose a sunny or partly shaded spot, making sure that the soil does not become too dry in summer. Photinia x fraseri: This evergreen shrub makes an interesting hedge and if you choose a variety such as ‘Red Robin’, you can enjoy flamboyant red patches of colour throughout the hedge in the spring as new growth is wonderfully coloured. Does best in a fertile soil with plenty of sun or part shade. by Pippa Greenwood

Whichever of these fantastic options takes your fancy, don’t forget the planting basics: •

Plant container grown hedging plants nearly any time of year, avoiding very wet, cold or dry weather. Plant bare-root hedging at any time that it is available, mainly late autumn to late winter or very early spring. Prepare the ground by forking in bulky organic matter such as garden compost, bagged compost or well-rotted manure. Most hedging is best planted with each plant about 45cm (18in) apart along the row. For a denser hedge plant in two staggered rows, each row about 30-45cm apart. Don’t forget to keep the young hedge properly pruned – if left to grow it alone, it’ll rarely become good and dense.

Sign up for Pippa’s newsletter at www. pippagreenwood.com and you’ll receive a free e-book on organic gardening. Her website also offers a stylish ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ gift card, a perfect gift where the recipient receives their chosen garden ready veg plants in the spring. Every week Pippa emails with topical hints, tips and advice. Vouchers priced from just £39 for up to 66 gardenready plants, 6 packets of seed and the weekly emails.

An Autumnal Flourish for Pickering & District Horticultural Society

Charity No1080288.

A thriving society at the heart of the Pickering community is looking forward to its final major event of 2011.

P

ickering Horticultural Society will host its Late Open Show on Sunday November 20 – and everyone is welcome to take part in showing flowers, vegetables, produce, flower art and handicrafts. Secretary Sue Hine said: “We’re really encouraging everyone in the society to bring something, and anyone else who has something to share is invited to enter too. “It doesn’t need to be something you think is show class; if you have a decent plant or vegetable in your garden or allotment, you’re welcome to bring it down – beginners and enthusiasts of all levels are welcome.” Novices showing at the November event will have the chance to mix and mingle with more experienced gardeners, finding plenty of opportunities to make new friends and pick up lots of gardening tips. Children are also welcome to join the fun with youngsters’ classes including an arrangement of autumn leaves, a model snowman, edible fruit necklaces, a posy of flowers or a dressed wooden spoon.

Further highlights in the society’s calendar include regular talks. In October the group enjoyed a visit from author and broadcaster Peter Blackburne-Maze, titled ‘All Things Bright and Beautiful’. Talks now take place in the Black Swan – watch out for the society’s newsletter for details of upcoming events. The society recently enjoyed a boost to its membership, which now stands at well over 200, and some new enthusiastic members have joined the committee. It was established in 1975, and the new guys are keen to build on solid foundations laid by the society’s founders and long-standing members to take the group to further successes. Membership benefits include the chance to buy gardening wares from the society’s own warehouse, and discounts at local garden centres. The group is sociable, welcoming and very keen to encourage new members. The Late Open Show will take place from 1.30pm to 4.30pm at the Memorial Hall, Bridge Street, Pickering. Entries can be staged from 7pm to 9pm on Saturday November 19 or 8am to 10am on Sunday November 20. Entries close at 9.45am on the day of the show, except flower art, which closes on Friday, November 18. For more details on any of the society’s activities, contact the secretary Sue Hine on 01751 477828.

ork Opera’s main aim is to bring opera of high quality to the people of York and its surrounding area. Formed in 1966 performs both serious and light works. Their regular fare includes ‘Cavalleria Rusticana’, ‘I Pagliacci’, ‘Nabucco’, ‘Macbeth’, ‘Aida’ and ‘Carmen’. In addition to these large-scale works they have also staged Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’, ‘Marriage of Figaro’ and ‘Don Giovanni’ and we regularly produce Gilbert and Sullivan operas. The lighter works not only provide variety of style, but also help to subsidise the more demanding repertoire. The group currently consists of approximately 70 singing members along with numerous friends,

associate members, orchestral musicians and technical volunteers whose provide vital support. The company can now draw on a substantial list of principals, both amateur and professional, some local and some who travel in from across the region. With the range of work produced, however, there are regular opportunities for younger and developing singers to step into principal roles. In 1849 Otto Nicolai composed some wonderful music for The Merry Wives of Windsor, an opera based on the comic Shakespearean play, but tragically died at a young age soon afterwards. Tickets for the production are available from York Theatre Royal Box Office on 01904 623568.

The centre is dedicated to helping everyone find inner peace through teaching meditation and practical advice for daily life based on the ancient wisdom of Buddha. Regular meditation classes are open to all, suitable for anyone and ideal for beginners. Each class consists of guided relaxation meditations, a short talk, discussion and questions followed by refreshments. Once a month, you can join the Sunday morning class and then stay on for a delicious vegetarian Sunday lunch, made with love by skilled resident cooks. Weekend meditation breaks offer the chance to take more time out, rest, reflect and explore meditation practices more deeply. Every session is fully guided by qualified teachers and, again, beginners will receive a warm welcome and an excellent introduction to meditation.

Learn to meditate in 5 steps

1

Find a comfortable position, either cross-legged on a cushion or on a chair with your feet flat on the floor. Keep your back straight, not tense, so you are relaxed but alert. Place your hands comfortably in your lap, palms up, with your right hand on top of your left and thumbs lightly touching, and gently close your eyes. Become aware of the flow of thoughts running through your mind – you’ll notice a lot of memories, ‘stuff’ to do and problems to solve. Gradually try to let these go – you can pick them up again later! Then, check in with your body, and allow any tension or tightness in the body to fall away.

2

3

Start to observe your breath – without changing its natural rhythm, just watching. Gradually focus your mind on the sensation of breath in your nostrils as it enters and leaves your body. Simply stay with this one sensation for as long as possible, focusing on it single-pointedly. Distracting thoughts will inevitably arise – but try to resist becoming interested in them, allowing them to subside and disappear instead. You can practice this for one minute, five, twenty minutes – or hours and hours! It doesn’t matter how long you sit for, but a regular meditation practice will help you reduce stress and anxiety, improve your relationships and become happier and stronger.

Fireworks How to keep pets safe on

by Nicky Vincent BVSc MRCVS Station House Vets

I

Remember, remember the fifth of November....

Night

t’s that time of year again that excites so many of us around the country with the smell of bonfires and the anticipation of all the bangs, whizzes and whooshes that go alongside the bright colours that light up the night sky. But what about the pets in your life, do they enjoy the whole experience quite so much? Few pets seem to relish this time of year, often they don’t seem to notice anything different but for a proportion of our dogs and cats it is a time of stress, anxiety and even, for a small percentage, phobia and total terror. So, what can we do to help our pets through the whole experience, hopefully minimising their stress and encouraging them to view fireworks as something not to be afraid of and definitely not doing anything to compound their fear and make the situation worse next time around. There are a few obvious things like drawing the curtains, keeping cats indoors and making sure the dog has had a good walk while it’s still daylight outside. Animals are best not left in single storey extensions as the acoustics of these magnify the sound and either having the television or music with a regular beat on are both good ways of drowning out as much sound as possible too. Providing a safe place where they can hide and feel safe will help a lot of pets. If they choose to use this refuge then don’t try and force them out of it as this can only add to their stress levels. If these basic ideas aren’t enough there are other options available. Pheromone-based products come in

spray or plug-in diffuser form, one for cats and one for dogs. These mimic the scent their mother gives off when she is feeding her offspring and helps to make animals feel more at ease in their surroundings. However, these products often need to be used in the home for up to 4 weeks in advance to get the full effect. There are also some supplements on the market which can be given on food, they are natural products that aid in calming and can have good results. In extreme cases sedative drugs need to be prescribed for animals that really don’t cope well so make an appointment to discuss things with your vet if you’re concerned. Firework celebrations are often spread over several nights and can last for several hours at a time so it’s important to be prepared if you do have an animal that suffers. It’s not always easy but try to act as naturally as possible when fireworks are going off, your pet will pick up on your mood and so if you are feeling stressed then they will often react to that. Similarly, if you fuss over them too much or punish them for the behaviour they’re exhibiting then they feel that there is a reason to be afraid, whereas if you act as though nothing out of the ordinary is happening then you may find that they are calmer too. Finally, if you have a pet that is really affected by any kind of noise phobia, not just firework-related, then there are desensitisation programs available, these often take the form of a CD that gradually increases the noise levels to help get them used to it. Though not an option for immediate effect, it is something worth thinking about before the next onslaught of firework season. Anway, I’m off to get some cinder toffee in preparation for the big night! www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 67

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who has supported us with their regular custom. We continue to offer great espresso coffees, freshly baked cakes, a wide range of freshly prepared meals, an extensive gluten free menu all at exceptional quality and great value. We have added sofas, tub chairs and even a high chair for families. 68 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
