elcome to the November edition. I know it is only October still but it is time to mention the ‘C’ word. Christmas is coming and you need to be prepared! This year, more than years before, our local independent suppliers and retailers deserve our support. Yorkshire produce is second to none, with delicious food at any number of local retailers and farm shops, and gorgeous gifts and clothing from independent shops. On our doorsteps there is choice, quality, service and good prices that can easily beat the giant chains. To ease the pain over this festive period Malton, retailers are going out of their way to help you with longer opening hours. Many Malton shops have promised to be open longer hours in November and on Sundays in December which is fantastic news for busy families. So instead of following the crowds to some anonymous shopping centre or playing the internet shopping lottery, why not enjoy a day out in one of our

market towns and see what Ryedale has to offer. That said, there is so much still to happen before the silly season starts. Bonfire Night is always a sociable occasion in my village. It’s a fun event, with sporadic rockets, fountains, the Catherine Wheel that fails to spin, and tasty food and punch that you can never really see in the dark but tastes fantastic anyway! You can, as ever, find a huge range of local events in this month’s Handy Mag, many giving much needed support to local charities like the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Have a look through and please give them your support too. The winner of the September competition was Mrs Burrow of Norton. I hope you enjoy your meal at the Jolly Farmers! Until next time....

s anyone who has ever tried to DIY a plastering job will quickly discover, it’s not as easy as it might first look. Knowing the right materials to use, how to approach the job and ensure a durable finish with a quality surface is a real art. Calling in the experts for a plastering job – especially a team of highly-qualified, apprenticetrained plasterers with more than 18 years’ experience between them – makes good sense, as it’s no job to skimp on. Ian Townley Plasterers celebrates six years’ trading in September. The team specialises in boarding, dry lining, wet plaster and normal plastering ie skimming. They also do rendering of any type including new and old buildings such as churches, barn conversions and farm buildings. They usually work within Yorkshire but are happy to travel further afield. Ian said: “We pride ourselves on our professional and clean standards of work and very competitive rates which will be very hard to beat locally.

RYEDALE With very few exceptions - major sporting events, the X Factor and so on - the days when we all watched the same programmes at the same time are long gone: increasingly TV is something we record and watch later on. But what happens if you forget to record something, or something went wrong with the recording? Don’t despair, because it’s never been easier to turn back time.
Ones to watch We’re talking, of course, about catch-up TV: the sites and services that enable you to watch programmes that have already been broadcast. The best-known service is the BBC’s excellent iPlayer (www.bbc. co.uk/iplayer), which you can use to ensure you never miss an episode of Newsnight or EastEnders, and which is available not just for computers but for games consoles too. There’s also an app to watch iPlayer programmes on an iPhone or iPad. One of the great things about iPlayer is that it doesn’t just cover BBC One: there’s also the entertainment channel BBC 3, the arts channel BBC4 and
the children’s channels cBBC and cBeebies. Programmes are usually available immediately after broadcast, and they remain online for a week. The BBC isn’t the only major broadcaster offering catch-up TV. ITV has the ITV player (www.itv.com/itvplayer), Channel 4 has 4oD (www. channel4.com/programmes/4oD) and Channel Five has Demand Five (www.channel5.com/ demand5). Like the BBC’s iPlayer they enable you to watch the last week of programming and they’re also available as apps for mobile phones and tablets, although unlike BBC iPlayer they include advertising as well as programming. For an easy way to search across all the broadcasters’
catch-up services, check out www. timefortelly.co.uk, a search engine for British catch-up TV. Sky’s catchup services are subscriber-only: if you’re a Sky customer you can access Sky Go at go.sky.com. Catching up via computers, phones or tablets is very handy, but what about using your TV? If you’re with Virgin Media or Sky you can access catch-up TV via your cable or satellite box, although you need a specific kind of box: the Virgin Media TiVo, which gives you the BBC iPlayer, 4oD and ITV’s Net Player, or a broadband-connected Sky+ box to access its Sky Anytime+ service. It’s a similar story with BT Vision: customers with a Vision+ box can access catch-up TV as part of their package.

NOVEMBER 2012 • ISSUE 83 Freeview can do catch-up TV too: most Freeview HD TVs are Smart TVs, which means they can access BBC’s iPlayer if they’re connected to the internet, and many Freeview+ HD recorders can do the same. If you don’t have the hardware, however, you might want to buy something newer and more interesting: the new digital TV service YouView (www.youview. com) offers all the broadcasters, not just the BBC. For example, the Humax DTR-T1000 digital TV recorder gives you Freeview+ HD and YouView for a subscriptionfree of £279.95. Its 500GB hard disk gives you up to 300 hours of recording time.

Chevrolet Cruze SW
Model: Chevy Cruze SW LTZ Price: £19,785 (as tested) Engine: 1.7-litre, diesel Power: 128bhp Max speed:124mph 0-60mph: 10.4s MPG (Comb’d): 62.8 Emissions: 119g/km Residual Values (three years): TBC
Chevy has sold more than 1.3 million Cruzes worldwide - now they’ve added an estate model to the range. What is it?
What’s the spec like?
This is the Cruze that dealers have been waiting for. Last year Chevy dealers received the much needed five-door hatch, but they have been unable to provide a competitive offering in the popular Csegment estate sector - until now. It’s practical with 1,478 litres of boot space with the seats down, and it also brings in a facelift for the Cruze range, new technology and the death knell for the Cruze four-door saloon - it’s been discontinued.
Just like the five-door hatchback, Chevrolet is generous with the list of standard equipment. The range kicks off at ÂŁ15,375 for the 1.6-litre LS which comes with air con, MP3 connectivity and electric mirrors and prices top out at ÂŁ19,785 for the 1.7-litre LTZ Nav
What’s under the bonnet? Quite simply the choice is limited to two petrols and a diesel. The petrols come in the flavour of a 128bhp 1.6 and a 139bhp 1.8. The majority of buyers will opt for the 128bhp 1.7-litre diesel as it’s the best allrounder. We also tried a 1.4-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel at launch, but there are no current plans to introduce these to the UK yet. by James Baggott, editor of Car Dealer Magazine

MOTORING
model. This is very reasonably priced and boasts alloy wheels, climate control, sat nav, cruise control and rear parking sensors.
What’s it like to drive?
When it comes to the test drive, we would advise customers to try different versions. Why? Petrol versions are soft, wallowy and aren’t involving to drive. However, the 1.7-litre diesel version – thanks to more weight over the front wheels – is far more pleasurable to drive. The six-speed auto (1.8-litre LT) is not the best.
What do the press think of it?
The Independent said: ‘Most parts of the world like it and buy it in big numbers. Now that the Station Wagon has arrived, more UK buyers can be expected to join in.’ Auto Express, however, concluded: ‘The Cruze SW makes plenty of sense as a family choice, thanks to its spacious, clever boot and refined, comfortable drive, but the Ford Focus estate is sharper and much more fun to drive.’
What do we think of it?
We’ve never been huge fans of the Cruze range, deeming it to be the Astra’s poorer cousin and not that attractive. But the SW changes that – yes, a Focus may be more fun to drive, but few rivals match the SW’s package of attractive styling and great value for money. The Cruze is no longer a left-field choice.

FOOD
1. Place the venison in a bowl and pour over the
wine. Add the juniper berries and bay leaves, cover and marinate in the fridge for 4-5 hours or overnight. Remove from the fridge 1 hour before starting to cook the casserole.
2. Preheat the oven to 150ºC/300ºF/Gas Mark 2.
Strain the venison from the red wine (reserving the wine). Heat half the oil and butter in a large flameproof casserole dish and fry the venison in 2-3 batches until browned all over, adding the rest of the oil and butter when necessary. Remove the venison with a slotted spoon and set aside.
3. Add the onions to the casserole and fry for 6-7
minutes until golden, adding the garlic after 3 minutes. Sprinkle over the seasoned flour and fry for a further 1-2 minutes. Gradually stir in the wine and stock and bring to the boil, scraping any sediment from the base of the casserole.
4. Add the venison, parsnips, carrots and half the
thyme sprigs to the casserole and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Cover and cook in the preheated oven for 1½ – 2 hours until the venison and vegetables are tender.
5. Remove from the oven and stir in the redcurrant
jelly. Return the casserole, uncovered, to the oven for a further 20-30 minutes. Serve garnished with the rest of the thyme sprigs and with creamy mashed potato, if liked.

ou never know when you might need the fast, life-saving service provided by the Yorkshire Air Ambulance – as Clare Nellist discovered in January this year. Clare, a racing secretary for horse trainer Declan Carroll, was helping him clip one of the horses when it reacted suddenly, and its front foot came down on her forehead. Bloodied and dizzy, Clare didn’t realise how serious the injury was at first, but Mr Carroll reacted quickly. Road paramedics were soon on the scene. They bandaged her head and took her to meet the Yorkshire Air Ambulance, which landed on open ground nearby. Clare said: “The air paramedics were absolutely fantastic, talking to me and reassuring me, even though I refused to lie down on a stretcher because I thought it would probably be the only time I was ever going to travel in a helicopter – so I wanted to see the view!” She was flown to Scarborough Hospital in just six minutes, where the shock of what had happened finally hit home. “I had been calm until then, but when we arrived at the hospital I burst into tears. A paramedic hugged me until I stopped crying, and they accompanied me right to the bedside.” Other than a bad scar on her forehead, Clare has made a good recovery and considers herself very lucky. She said: “From the moment the air paramedics arrived on the scene I knew I was in good hands. If I’d travelled by road, the risk of me falling unconscious would have been much greater. “I donate to the air ambulance every month now, and I would really encourage anyone else to. You never know when you’re going to need them, especially if you work with horses.” The Yorkshire Air Ambulance is a registered charity which relies on community fundraisers to be able to run. In October eight commissioned frames will be hung in a main atrium at The Savoy, London, and a conceptual perspex and mirror lightbox at the famous Ivy Restaurant. In February the company produced 800 pictures in many sizes in two weeks for a Scottish hotel group – showing their capacity to rise to most framing challenges. A visit to Zenki Tiles & Interior will inspire you to take a fresh approach to decor and show you how to introduce some extra flair and creativity into your own home. The distinctive showroom has been deliberately designed to give a visual flavour of endless possibilities for the home, and goes way, way beyond the usual collection of tiles found in a typical showroom. The idea for Zenki came when Dave and Steve discovered a need for a good tile supplier in the local area. They decided to open a tile shop next to Derwent Vale Building Company at the Windmill House Estate, Showfield Lane in Malton. However, once it was under way, the project took on a life of its own! Dave said: “As we were in a small area, rather than simply displaying a square metre of every type of tile we supplied, which I find pretty uninspiring, we decided to use the space to present new ideas – and it just progressed from there!
creative iDeas
Tiling is just the start of the show at Zenki. Glass, copper, acrylic and hardwood are all incorporated into the displays. 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
Fresh bright colours are used, such as lime green acrylic bathroom cabinets, there are beautiful natural stone samples, mosaics and printed glass panels featuring natural images. Alongside these unique tile displays, a huge selection of kitchen tiles is also available to view. There is a brand new range of tile designs in the shop this autumn with even more inspiration for your project. Owners Dave Hume and Steve Dunn said: “The showroom is intended to demonstrate that you don’t have to stay plain with
your design. There are lots of exciting design ideas you can use in any home, and it needn’t be very expensive – just a small subtle idea can transform a room into something really special. It’s not difficult to be creative on a budget.” Special features customers can try include having an oak ‘niche’ built in their bathroom to use as a display space or for storing towels, bespoke glass splashback panels printed with their choice of image, stunning granite or quartz worktops, or a glamorous water feature. Dave and Steve are encouraging customers to come up with something unique for their home by incorporating their personalities and hobbies into their designs. For example, at the Zenki showroom, there is a Harley Davidson display consisting of a huge image of a motorbike printed onto glass, which is tiled into the wall complete with leather belt, half a petrol tank and an exhaust pipe doubling up as a towel rail! “We really would like customers to use Zenki as an inspiration to get creative, express themselves and try new design ideas in their homes – whatever they would like to try, we can create it.”

My pet is terrified of fireworks,
what can I do?
The firework season is almost on us again. Whilst it might be exciting for some, it can present a real worry for pet owners – a recent study showed almost half of all dogs in the U.K. show some level of fearful response to loud noises. However, with a little advanced planning there a number of things you can do to help.
What to do now: • Take refuge! Prepare a refuge area or hiding place for your pet to go to during the fireworks. You can encourage your dog to use it by placing treats there. • Cats will usually find their own hiding places but
NOMAD PRODUCTIONS INSPECTOR DRAKE & THE BLACK WIDOW
6 -8 DECEMBER 7.30PM AT NORTON COLLEGE
After their highly successful sell out production of Alan Aykbourn comedies Nomad Productions come to Norton College for their winter production. Another hilarious evening of comedy is guaranteed as they perform David Tristrams side splitting comedy. For those of you not familiar with The Inspector Drake comedies they could be described as a mixture of The Pink Panther, Monty Python and Fawlty Towers all rolled into one. Indeed Inspector Drake’s ineptitude makes Clousseau look like a veritable Sherlock Holmes. In this comic mystery our lnspector, along with his intrepid sergeant, struggles to solve a case in which the murders increase at an alarming rate. Their investigations being complicated by a baffling array of female suspects and the agonising escape of a rather large aracnid. This is definitely a production not to be missed and one which will get you in the mood for Christmas. Tickets are available from The Box Office Malton Library 34 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Pheromones are released by nursing bitches to comfort her pups and by the cat when they ‘scent gland’ prominent objects. There is also a collar which releases pheromones available for dogs which can be worn continuously for 1 month. • Zylkene® is a supplement available to sprinkle on food for cats and dogs and again helps them to feel calm, this can be used for all sorts of stressful situations. • These products should be started before the event and continued during the fireworks season.
On the day of the event: • Engage your dog in energetic exercise during the day to tire him out, but otherwise try to stick to your usual routine. • Keep your cat in the house and make sure all escape routes are blocked. • Draw the curtains in the room/s the animals may retreat to and turn on some music with a lot of constant drum beats or turn the television up. • If your cat has chosen to hide, leave it well alone until it feels safe to come out, and perhaps leave

Keep some toys handy to play with your dog as a distraction. • Horses or ponies should be brought in if possible. Each year we see one or two animals who have panicked by fireworks and injured themselves.
What to do in the long term: • Fear of fireworks don’t get better on their own and often get worse, with animals becoming increasingly afraid of other loud noises like thunder. Behaviour therapy (including noise desensitisation with a sounds CD) is generally very successful at changing the response to fireworks and loud noises – the sooner the problem is addressed the better the outcome is likely to be. Leaves by Pippa Greenwood
A
re you surrounded, engulfed and swamped with huge quantities of fallen leaves? The deluge that falls at this time of year is often enough to make even the most level headed, treeloving gardener eye up a chainsaw. So what can you do? Turn them in to gardeners’ gold: leafmould. If you want an environmentally friendly and very effective soil conditioner or mulching material, leafmould is the answer. If you have the space, make yourself a leafmould cage. Simply drive four treated softwood stakes into the ground, each stake marking out

NOVEMBER 2012 • ISSUE 83 one corner of the ‘cage’. The stakes need to be about 1.5m (5ft) long so that they can be driven in really well, to a depth of 1-2ft, leaving 3-4ft above ground. Then attach some galvanized chicken wire to the stakes to create the sides of the cage and cram the cage full of leaves. If they aren’t moist, add a watering can of water to the heap of leaves, pouring some in after each six inches of leaves. You can also speed up the process by using a leafmould activator (available from garden centres, mail order catalogues and websites). Most deciduous leaves rot down well, especially oak and beech trees. Leaves from fruit trees, garden shrubs and climbers work well too. Try to avoid including too many twigs or evergreen leaves as these take much longer to rot, as do tough, leathery leaves such as those from sycamore, horse chestnut and plane. Most of us collect leaves using a spring-tined rake and although slower, it helps you avoid some materials more easily. A leaf sucker or a leaf blower is quicker but will often mean you end up with more twigs and stones. If your leaves are a wide-ranging assortment, then a good idea is to use the lawn mower – just mow the lawn with the leaves on it. The collection bag on the mower will then be full of a brilliant mix of chopped leaves and even the slower-torot-down types will rot speedily as they have been chopped up quite finely. Mixed with the lush, high-nitrogen grass clippings, the whole process is sped up. If space, time or money are short then you can also make leafmould in a bin liner or bin bag. Choose a good quality bin liner and cram it full of leaves, again adding water and/or activator if you wish. Then stab a few holes in the bag with a garden fork, loosely fold over the top of the bag and weigh it down with a brick. You should have a useable product in 12-18 months, but the longer you leave it the better. Leafmould will help to improve the moistureretaining capacity of a light, sandy soil and reduce the aeration and drainage of a heavy clay soil. It also makes wonderful mulch that can be used on flower beds and borders, the vegetable plot, around trees and shrubs and on your fruit as well. It’s not often you get something for nothing, is it? So take advantage of all those leaves while you can. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood.com for some great gift ideas and items for your garden including: signed copies of Pippa’s books, hand-made terracotta herb planters and wall plaques, cloches, pop-up plant cloches, raised bed kits, ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ Gift Cards, heated propagators, Nemaslug and other natural pest controls and lots more. Make a Memory Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
Remember, remember the 5th of November... with Guy Fawkes, Armistice Day, Remembrance Sunday, All Saints Day and St Andrew’s Day, it seems all we do in November is remember! Have you got a good memory? Embarrassingly, meeting new people and remembering their name is one of the hazards of my job; on a second meeting, I often find myself re-naming parents and their children. Sometimes they laugh, sometimes they feel awkward, at worst they leave feeling I don’t really care! Apparently you can train your memory, I have tried but I’ve not seen a great improvement. As I get older, however, I am recognising more and more that the ability to remember is a gift. We can’t see the future and so we have been given an imagination and the ability to dream. Today is where memories are made and dreams fulfilled. We add to our memory everyday and it becomes a great reservoir to be explored and enjoyed. Sadly, some wish they could forget. When past experiences are full of pain and sadness, the ability to wipe our memories like a memory card is an attractive idea. However, memories have a purpose. It is the ability to remember that helps us learn from our mistakes. The ability to review and to learn is essential for our development and improvement. When we face a new challenge, memories can give us strength and encouragement to keep going when we can remember how we have succeeded before. Memories can also lift us emotionally when we look at photos of special occasions. I don’t think I practise the art of remembering enough. I’m too quick to fill any space with TV, a book or music. Yet when I stop and think of all that I have experienced so far I am thankful and often inspired. Many years ago I was given some great advice as a parent; ‘Make memories! If you want to pass something of value on to your children, give them good memories.’ It is something I have tried to live by. This November why not make a memory for a friend, a family member or colleague, something to give them strength and joy in the future. 42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Fersina North Yorkshire Ltd is 100% - says national survey
M
alton home improvement company Fersina North Yorkshire Ltd has been named as one of the companies rated 100% for customer satisfaction in a national survey of thousands of households. The result comes from the independent PVC-U installers’ organisation Network VEKA which collates customer questionnaire’s from its member companies across Britain and Ireland – nearly 16,000 questionnaires each year. Network VEKA is a unique, sectoral standards organisation that only accepts the very best, most professional window and door companies, and then makes sure they stay the best. All prospective members undergo rigorous vetting before being accepted and must agree to regular audits and training. In this way, Network VEKA can be so confident in the quality of its members’ work that everyone is able to offer the organisation’s ten year insurance-backed guarantee. Fersina North Yorkshire’s achievement was marked at Network VEKA’s recent AGM in Cheshire when the company was awarded membership of its ‘100% Club’. “It’s an honour because the award is not just the decision of some judging panel, said Director Alan Walker. “It is a genuine reflection of our customers’ opinions, and that means a lot to us.” The survey measures customers’ opinions on five parameters ranging from the installer fulfilling all that was promised. Network VEKA members collectively have an average customer satisfaction rating of 96%, compared with a recognised industry average of just 83%. This year, almost a third of installer members qualified for the 100% club - a record annual high, further underlining the organisation’s unwavering commitment to customer satisfaction.

Blast from the Past The clocks have gone back and it’s time to turn thrifty. Let’s go back to the past and rediscover retro. We’ve selected some of the craftiest craft books that will have you feeling all warm and nostalgic in no time. With the holiday season just around the corner, it’s perfect timing. Remember: homemade gifts are for life, not just for Christmas.
Make Do and Mend: Keeping Family and Home Afloat on War Rations Publisher: Michael O’Mara Duck the double-dip recession and take a leaf out of this reproduction 1940s instruction manual. If you’re planning a trip to Primark, think again; there may be some lost treasure in your wardrobe that can be transformed. This book is a lovely stroll down memory lane, with design ideas and simple instructions on making do with the homemade. You’ll certainly give more careful consideration to what pattern curtains you buy in the future.
Kirstie’s Vintage Home Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
When does shabby become chic? Kirstie Allsopp knows. As we continue to embrace vintage pieces, she’s helping us to find inspiration in fabric, crafts and techniques. With tips and hints on how to find, restore and rejuvenate furniture and everyday objects, you’ll have everything you need to make sure you end up with a piece to treasure. The buzz-word of the day is ‘upcycling’, and we’re not talking the Tour de France. 48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
The Complete Book of Retro Crafts: Collecting, Displaying & Making Crafts of the Past. By Suzie Millions Publisher: Lark
This book is like eating a FAB lolly while bouncing on a space hopper in a puff-ball skirt. It’s so retro it should be illegal. There are 40 projects with hints and tips on collecting and creating, ‘junking’ and hunting. Every charity shop and flea market will become a veritable treasure-trove. If quirky and old-school is your thing, then this book’s for you.
Country Cottage Quilting: 15 Quilt Projects Combining Stitchery with Patchwork By Lynette Anderson Publisher: David and Charles
Remember the movie ‘How to Make an American Quilt’? Well, our pick is more Antipodean than American. Australian designer Lynette Anderson has some beautiful ‘country cottage’ designs and shows you all the sewing and appliqué you’ll need to complete your own project. Just snuggling-up with the book and a cuppa will envelope you like…well, a big, fluffy quilt.
Crochet For Children By Claire Montgomerie Publisher: Cico Books
The craft that modernity forgot is making a comeback and this book will hook your children. All the basics are covered and there are 35 mini projects for them to tackle, everything from scarves to teddy bears. It’s fun for all the family when you’re drying off in front of the fire on ‘bath night’. If you’re going seventies, then you may as well go the whole hog.
Scrapbook Secrets By Kimber McGray Publisher: F and W
The art of scrapbooking should not be restricted to French exchange trips and Brownies badge projects. In this digital age we’ve loosened our grip on the tangible. In ‘Scrapbook Secrets’, Kimber McGray shares her tips on how to turn your memories into a masterpiece by rediscovering the art of decoupage, collage and collecting. With step-by-step instructions, you’ll be able to preserve your most cherished memories and family history, incorporated into your own work of art. Throw out the digital camera and buy a glue stick and some glitter. Then…go nuts!

The National Women’s Register
Do you have transport problems? No car? Inaccessible public transport? Alternatives too expensive?
Ladies, Are you looking to broaden your horizons and make new friends? NWR is coming to Malton & Norton!
Ryedale Community Transport can help you to:
National Women’s Register (NWR) is a network of local groups and individual members who enjoy lively discussion and conversation, both serious and light-hearted. It is for women who like to be informed and share ideas. By actively participating in the content of meetings, which typically take place in each other’s homes, members share their opinions and ideas and form long-lasting friendships.
We do this by providing:
A thriving NWR group already exists in Pickering and the organiser Christine Harrison is now ready to help establish a group for women of all ages in Malton and Norton. NWR was initiated 50 years ago, from a letter to The Guardian by a new stayat-home mum, desperate to talk about something other than babies and domesticity! Each group is autonomous and organises its meetings to best suit its members. The subjects for discussion are chosen by the members. Groups also organise theatre visits, walks, book clubs and workshops – the ideal escape from too much domesticity. To find out more about the NWR and to get involved in the Malton Norton group, either visit the website, (www. nwr.org.uk), or call the Head Office (0845 4500287) who will put you in touch with Christine Harrison. 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
