W
elcome to the November edition…
As you can see from this month’s cover, the Handy Mag is pleased to be sponsoring a local football team this season. My husband convinced me that this was a good idea despite my not being a football fan – I think it’s his humming of the Match of the Day theme tune that has put me off! But it’s great to be a supporter of the team and I hope their new kit brings them lots of luck! I’ve been hearing so much about social media lately: how great it is, how awful it is, how our teenagers are going to be unable to hold conversations face to face, it’s the end of the world etc etc. I’d like to think that I am taking part in this revolution - the Handy Mag (@Handymag) has 555 followers on twitter and I have daily updates on cupcakes and the weather on the Yorkshire Wolds - but I haven’t really worked out how to use it all properly yet. Should I tweet about my tea? Undoubtedly social media is amazing! It is here to stay and I intend to get to grips with it! We will be tweeting about local events, business news and local groups and will also be updating our Facebook page. As well as settling down with a nice cup of tea to read your Handy Mag this week, please follow us or like us to keep up with what’s happening in the area. With my daughter studying ‘A’ level History this year and the First World War, I have been reminded about Remembrance Day. I somehow associate the day with wars past but it is as much about current war veterans and their families. Wear that poppy with pride this November. A list of local Remembrance Day services and parades is on page 10. Congratulations to Chris Stevens of Helmsley for winning the September competition. Until next month…

Why the Poppy?
A
t the end of the First World War, in a bleak land of mud, completely devastated by fighting and the death of millions of soldiers, one plant thrived, the poppy. Year after year, as the warm weather arrived, the poppies bloomed and turned the bare ground into a sea of red. On the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918, the First World War ended and civilians wanted to remember those who had given their lives for peace and freedom. Nowadays, we are all familiar with the poppy as a symbol of remembrance and a way to raise funds to support veterans. But how did the iconic flower make the journey from the fields to our lapels? It all began with Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician who fought in Flanders. In May 1915 his friend was killed in action. Looking at the poppies growing alongside his grave moved McCrae to write the poem ‘In Flanders Fields’. The idea to use the poppy as a symbol of
remembrance came from an American professor and YWCA worker, Moina Michael, in 1918. She wrote a poem in reply to McCrae’s called ‘We Shall Keep the Faith’ and started to sell silk poppies. The idea was adopted by the American Legion in 1920. In 1921, Anna E Guerin started making artificial poppies in France and gained the support of Field Marshal Douglas Haig, founder of the Royal British Legion. The first poppy appeal was held on Armistice Day 1921. It was hugely popular and, despite a recommended selling price of threepence per poppy, single petals sold for £5. In all, the appeal raised £106,000 – that equates to almost £30 million in today’s money! Did you know that there is also a purple poppy? It commemorates the animals that have been victims of war and raises money for Animal Aid. Give your support and wear your poppy with pride this November.

MOTORING Winter Tyres
by Sarah Davey
Should you be thinking about fitting them?
I
drive a lot and dread icy winter roads, but somehow the thought of parting with hardearned cash for something as dull as tyres was a bit of a turn-off. Last November I had to hire a car in Switzerland, and I was amazed at the handling of the little vehicle and the confidence I felt behind the wheel, in what can only be described as less-than-ideal weather conditions - for that read snow, snow and more snow. I mentioned it to the Swiss friend I was visiting. She looked astonished, ‘It’s the winter tyres,’ she said matter-of-factly. ‘We always wonder why British people don’t use them.’
the UK was well below the 7 degrees centigrade when winter tyres become a safer option. The tyres are made from a different mixture of materials from normal tyres which makes them less affected by cold temperatures. The tread has more grooves and there are a higher number of ‘sipes’ or channels creating edges that lock into icy roads helping you brake and accelerate. If your car is rear wheel drive I’d say winter tyres are essential. If your car is front-wheel drive I’d still say they’re essential. Although the improvement in performance isn’t as great, it is still very noticeable. The tyre-fitter suggested changing them over in November and running with them until February/ March depending on the weather. This year try some winter tyres. You will never regret it. They may even save your life!
I was sold. On my return I called in at my local tyre salesman and asked for his advice. He suggested buying a set of cheap steel rims for my car and putting the winter tyres on those, storing the originals in my garage. Winter tyres improve handling on greasy roads, but will really come into their own in snowy and icy conditions. Met Office figures from winter last year showed that the minimum temperature for most of

AND TO THE TAX MAN I BEQUEATH…
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
O
ne of the hardest jobs I have to do is to persuade people to get rid of their money. “Hang on a minute”, I hear you say, “you’re a financial planner, you’re supposed to help people accumulate money not get rid of it.” And to some extent that’s true. There are two sets of people we help – those trying to accumulate money for the future, say retirement. And those who have already accumulated their money and now have a problem they’re not even aware of – the prospect of losing it all in death taxes or paying for elderly care.
More than £4 billion pounds is collected every year by the Inland Revenue in death tax – Inheritance Tax as it’s currently known. Much of that is entirely avoidable.
The irony is that those people who have accumulated money are those that have been prudent and saved for a rainy day. Let’s face it – the “ipod - want it all and want it now – generation” are unlikely to accumulate any wealth at all. But what the savers don’t recognise is that the rainy day is now, and if they’re not careful the money they’ve saved all their lives will end up down the pan.
Another reason is that people think that they’re going to spend the money at some point. That they’re too young to be thinking about death taxes. That they’ll deal with this later when it’s “nearer the time.”
The reason more action isn’t taken is, I think, threefold. One is that people are genuinely unaware they have a problem. They believe that death taxes only affect the rich. But the limit above which you will pay Inheritance Tax is only £325,000. Many houses are worth more than that without counting savings etc.
But the most common reason is that people think they’re immortal. They think they’re going to last forever. But of course they don’t. And most of them

Yet the steps you need to take to prevent this are relatively straight forward. But most take time to become effective. So you have to take action now and not wait until “nearer the time”. Because that time all too often sneaks up on you when you’re not looking. And then it’s too late.

Learn How to Make Your Business Work HARD So That YOU Don’t Have to….. I often talk in my workshops about the importance of time management — how everyone has the same amount of time every day, just 24 hours. What you get out of it depends on how you use it. I find Brian Tracy very inspiring in his book “Eat That Frog”. He recommends starting the day by dealing with the worst and the most important thing that you need to do i.e. the “Frog”. The key thing to bear in mind is, if you have to eat a frog, it doesn’t pay to sit and look at it too long. The key to high performance is to plan every day in advance the night before, identifying and setting your priorities. Ask yourself, “If I can only complete one task on this list before I leave today, which one would it be?” Whatever that is, becomes your “Frog”. The next morning you need to discipline yourself to start in on that task, and deal only with that until it is complete. If you can develop that habit, you can double and triple your productivity, you’ll take full control of your life, you will eventually become wealthy, and the personal feeling of pride, accomplishment, discipline and achievement you get will be absolutely extraordinary. It is one of the most important of all lessons to learn, and one of the hardest things to implement. Once you’ve got the hang of this then it’s time to get your employees following your lead. ‘OUT OF THE ASHES’ MALTON & OLD MALTON CRICKET CLUB PRESENTS THE BAND
‘HUGE’
THE MILTON ROOMS MALTON FRIDAY 13TH DECEMBER 2013 Back in May Malton & Old Malton CC were devastated when arsonists burnt down the cricket pavilion at their second ground in Old Malton. It was built by members of Old Malton Cricket Club in 1955. Many, many thanks go to neighbours, Malton & Norton Rugby Club, who offered the use of two of their changing rooms enabling the club to fulfil their fixtures for 2013. The club plans to build a new pavilion but will need to apply for grants and will be required to raise a significant contribution themselves. Their first major fundraising event is a concert by the Band Huge. Tickets for the event cost £20 and can be obtained from House Martin’s Day Nursery, St Michaels Street and fashion shop, Smash, in Market Place Malton or from Club Treasurer, Joy Hudson tel 01653 692223. Huge, a very popular band in and around York is guaranteed to supply a highly entertaining and lively evening for all ages, so please get your tickets early to avoid disappointment.

Top Tips from a dental professional
Tooth Clenching and its Treatment With today’s stressful lifestyles more and more people present to healthcare professionals with problems related to tooth clenching/grinding. Some symptoms can be very painful and debilitating for the patient therefore their correct diagnosis and management is very important. HOW CAN I TELL IF I DO IT? Most people are unaware of their habit as they may do it whilst asleep or when concentrating on everyday tasks.
by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
You may suffer recurrent or chronic headaches especially when waking, however pain can present in the jaw, sinus, behind the eyes and also the neck and shoulders. The jaw joint, the TMJ, may click, grind ,be difficult to open and close and also be painful. Teeth may fracture repeatedly or become worn, they may also loosen or show localised gum shrinkage and be very sensitive or even develop toothache. You may notice the edges of your tongue are bumpy (crenelated). People who have lost some or all of their back teeth may be more prone due to their bites being unbalanced. HOW CAN IT BE TREATED? Your dentist will make a provisional diagnosis, however they may refer you for a second opinion in more complicated cases. Treatments include the provision of tailor made splints (hard or soft), jaw exercises, modifying the way teeth bite together or more advanced forms of treatment depending on each individual case. With correct diagnosis and management we can usually reduce the patients symptoms or alleviate them altogether allowing them to be more comfortable and to function normally.

HEALTH
SLEEP By Lorraine Mace
S
leep improves our sense of wellbeing, enables our bodies to repair and rejuvenate, allows our minds to recover from stress and is nature’s way of making sure we are able to cope with life. The tips below might help those who dread the wee small hours of the night. BEFORE GOING TO BED Try • Establish a sleep timetable. Go to bed and get up at the same time each day – including over weekends. Even if you feel you haven’t had enough sleep, get up anyway. • Make sure the bedroom isn’t too hot • Exercise for at least thirty minutes each day, but not too close to bedtime • Follow a relaxing routine – deep breathing, aromatherapy and massage all ease tension • Listen to white noise or relaxation CDs • Take a warm bath or shower Avoid • Try not to work on anything for at least an hour before going to bed • Napping in the afternoon or evenings will hamper your chances of getting a good night’s sleep • Don’t drink anything within two hours of bedtime and always

empty your bladder before going to bed Don’t read anything exciting (mystery or thriller novel) before trying to sleep as your subconscious will continue to think about it instead of relaxing Avoid all caffeine products from mid-afternoon onwards Don’t drink alcohol before bed – although it might aid you in getting off to sleep, it can cause you to wake in the night and prevents the body from going into the deepest level of sleep
IN BED Try • If you must read in bed, choose the most boring book you can find • Count backwards from 100 • Visualise yourself in a peaceful place • Wear socks as they can help you to stay asleep – feet have poor circulation and get cold even if the rest of your body is warm.

possible for as long as possible – use light blocking curtains or an eye mask Use earplugs to deaden sound
Avoid • Do not watch television, eat snacks, make phone calls, read or do anything work-related in bed • Don’t lie awake worrying. Give yourself thirty minutes maximum and then get up again for a short while. • Don’t have an illuminated alarm clock – clock watching almost certainly guarantees sleepless nights • Should none of the above work and you continue to suffer sleepless nights, it is essential to consult your doctor. Without sufficient sleep your body and mind will not recover fully from the stress of everyday life.

Transformational Healing and Personal Development Breakthrough Days and Retreats. Our Breakthrough Days and Healing Retreats are for people who are ready to embrace change into all aspects of their existence; for people who wish to be set free of their self-disempowering thought patterns and beliefs by transforming them into self-empowering ones. They are tailored to each individual’s requirements. We only see one person at a time which ensures that our full attention is focussed upon their own unique needs. Breakthrough Days and Retreats deliver a complete healing solution, through uniquely innovative transformational healing and personal development which creates a day of lasting change. We utilise specialised healing, mindfulness and self realisation to create a new beginning that transforms inner disharmony into inner harmony and wholeness. Everyone’s general state of health and well-being is a direct reflection of their current underlying state of consciousness. Suffering and pain is being created within aspects of consciousness right now; this requires skilled transformational healing, applied within consciousness, to transform and heal it back into wholeness. We are taught all sorts of things in our life experience - but we are not taught how to think or the ramifications of different ways of thinking or the responsibilities involved. We address this within the Personal Development aspect of the day. People are often taught that time is a great healer, but the reverse is actually true. The longer unresolved issues continue the greater the effect upon our general state of health and wellbeing. We deal with people’s long term emotional ties surrounding past events and other people quickly and painlessly. Life time habits can be transformed, self disempowering thought patterns and beliefs are transformed into self empowering ones. We can deliver the tools, healing skills and conceptual understanding that people require to transform themselves and their life experience in a single day. We empower people to become self reliant and self assured in a day of lasting transformational change that will last them for the rest of their life experience. 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

fter many years of playing football in junior leagues, it is always a big step into adult football for our young people. Pickering Town Junior Football club was formed in 1978 and expanded rapidly in recent years to teams ranging from under 9s through to under 16s. The club became an FA Community Club in 2006, the highest standard there is in grass roots football. The Pickering club has ensured that hundreds of children receive fantastic football training and this year is also providing coaching in local schools. The club has sent boys for training at York City and Leeds United Schools of Excellence.

Pickering Pre-School Playgroup (Hallgarth)
A
secure, stable and fun environment for your child has been available at Hallgarth in Pickering since 1965. At almost 50 years old, the pre-school, situated in the Parish Hall, has helped hundreds of children start on their learning journey. “Everyone is welcome at Hallgarth,” says Claire, preschool manager. “Our friendly staff and committee are always happy to help and answer any questions or concerns you may have for your child.” The hall provides a great space for many different kinds of play and a covered outdoor area, means fresh air and outside play are available whatever the weather. As with many other preschools, nurseries and schools, Pickering PreSchool follows the Early Years Foundation Stage which ensures that children learn and develop well and are kept healthy and safe. The EYFS covers seven areas of learning including personal, social, emotional, communication, understanding the world and expressive arts. There is a keyworker system in place which helps children feel more settled and secure and builds good relationships with families. Each child has a Learning Journey for their time in pre-school which shows their development through observations, photographs and examples of their work. The pre-school is also a member of the Pre-School Learning Alliance which runs acclaimed training and education programmes and offers advice. “We all work extremely hard to ensure every child has a happy and enjoyable time with us while also helping them to achieve and promote their learning in all areas of the EYFS.” says Claire. “We continually

assess and then plan for the next step in your child’s learning.” Pickering Pre-School is open Mondays, Wednesday and Fridays from 9.10 - 11.40am. There are a number of other drop-in sessions at Hallgarth that can help children feel comfortable as part of the pre-school family from a young age. The Stay and Play session on Tuesdays from 9.45 – 11.15am is a baby/toddler and parent/carer session. Children can take part in craft activities, music and singing, small world play, dressing up and role playing and enjoy the extensive outdoor facilities, all led by friendly and qualified staff. It is also a great chance to get out of the house and meet and chat with other parents and carers. The Baby Bear Club is aimed at parents and children aged 0 – 18 months. The group is held in the back room of the parish hall from 9.30 til 11am every Friday morning (term time only). The pre-school is run by a hard-working group of volunteers who are constantly on the look-out for new committee members as without a committee and a chairperson the pre-school cannot run. Help with fundraising is also essential. If you are interested in helping out, please contact Amy Hadden (Chairperson) on the number below. A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
The Cuckoo’s Calling
Charlotte’s Web
Unless you have been living under a rock for the last few months, then you will know that there is actually no such person as Robert Galbraith: Galbraith is really JK Rowling. Much has been made in the press of Rowling’s ‘secret’ authorship of a crime novel. The key question, however, should be ‘is it any good?’ And the answer is a resounding ‘yes’.
For some readers, the very title of this book brings a lump to the throat. From the first line ‘Where’s Papa going with that axe?’ to the last, it is beautifully told and instantly memorable. The story of Fern’s relationship with Wilbur, the runt she saves from her father’s axe, and of Wilbur’s relationship with Charlotte, the spider who convinces the world that Wilbur is ‘some pig’, the tale rewards reading and re-reading.
By Robert Galbraith
By EB White
While Rowling was understandably angry that her cover was blown by some careless gossip, the fact that this shot the book to the top of the bestseller charts undoubtedly widened its potential audience. Even before this, however, the story had been critically acclaimed by a range of fellow crime writers, and it is easy to see why. Cormoran Strike, the central character, fits well alongside the range of eclectic private detectives that populate the genre. An army veteran, with a chequered past, physically and mentally scarred by his experiences, he is believable and likeable from the start. We know enough to keep us guessing, but never fully get inside his head. The supporting characters are equally well drawn – Robin, his receptionist and almost- assistant, acts as an ideal foil – and the setting is given careful treatment. By chance, I read the book whilst staying in London, close to Strike’s fictional office on Denmark Street, and was almost able to trace his steps at times. The novel itself is well plotted – again, no surprise – and moves at a strong pace as Strike investigates the death of Lula Landry, model and style icon. Strike’s own past is explored through hints and flashes, which contrast with the celebrity haunts of Landry and her associates, adding an interesting counterpoint. Many reviewers have claimed that Rowling’s authorship is obvious here, but I would disagree, and had I not known, I would not have guessed. In any case it is immaterial. Cormoran Strike is a million miles away from Harry Potter, and the audience for each book is completely different. This is crime fiction, well plotted, engaging and leaving you in immediate hope for a return of Strike. What more can we ask?

Like all the best stories, the central message of Charlotte’s Web is the power of language. Charlotte really is ‘a true friend and a good writer’ both at once. For young readers, it also shows some of the realities of life and of growing up – the comic scenes involving Templeton the rat, for example, and Fern’s brother Avery, are interspersed with some harsh messages. If you can, track down an edition with Garth Williams’ illustrations, which complement the story perfectly. And try not to give away the ending as you read aloud – but be careful to have some tissues to hand.

CHRONICLES IN THE LIFE OF ALFIE PART 4 AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW OF A DAY IN PRACTICE.
ALFIE GOES ON HOLIDAY Today I don’t like Phil! It all began a week ago when Phil announced excitedly that he had booked to go camping in France. I did not share in his enthusiasm, as I knew this meant I would be spending the week abandoned in the kennels or ‘doggy holidays’ as Phil referred to it! Little did he know it was far from a holiday for me being cooped up all day with the other miserable hounds. On Phil’s return, I would be expected to appear all excited to see him and share in his happiness. He would not even notice the trauma I had endured or the fact that I could do with a holiday! This time though, Phil explained I would be coming with him. I was so excited as I had never been abroad before and judging by Phil’s mood and suntan when he returned I had always thought ‘holiday’ was a place I might like to visit. Besides being anywhere with Phil was going to be better than going to kennels! However, I did not know that to partake in Phil’s French adventure I would need to visit the VET. As a PATIENT not an observer! Now, I love going to work with Phil, to see my friends and be a part of the action from the safety of Phil’s desk, but I had a rather unpleasant discovery whilst exploring recently, about the procedures that go on within the vets. I tried to explain to Phil, that actually, I would like to go on ‘doggy holidays’ after all. It wasn’t all bad. Actually I quite enjoyed it. I wagged my tail to show my 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
enthusiasm, as he didn’t seem to understand me. He mistook this as me looking forward to France and enduring what ever was necessary to get there. ‘Good dog’ he said patting my head. I groaned and lay down looking up at him with heavy eyes. I loved Phil but sometimes he was just so STUPID. We arrived at the vets and poor unsuspecting me, trotted in happily behind Phil, unaware of the things to be bestowed on me. I started to realise that it was not going to be a normal day when instead of turning left to the vets office we turned right, to the consulting room. I knew I was in trouble when Phil closed the door behind us and turned to me with what he obviously thought was a reassuring face. I knew if he was making ‘that’ face at me, then something most unpleasant was about to happen. Apparently, so Phil was telling me, I needed a pet passport to travel within the EU and to get one, I needed to have a Rabies Vaccination, a microchip and receive a tapeworm treatment. I was mortified. Did I look like the kind of dog to have rabies or tapeworm? Phil then said I might as well have a flea treatment for good measure. Luckily I already had a microchip. Phil said I had had it done when I was castrated. I did not know what that word meant but it sounded very important and made me feel very manly! Phil was still talking despite me pulling my ‘I’m not listening face.’ ‘Right Alfie this rabies vaccination needs to be given 21 days before we travel so you need it now’ he bent down and tickled my ears, then he stuck the vaccination into my scruff. He gave me a handful of biscuits and told me I could have my flea and tapeworm treatment closer to the time of our holiday. Still chance to hide before then I thought whilst making a hasty retreat to his desk. What I didn’t know was I would have to have another tapeworm treatment in France before I was allowed back into the country, but that is another story. I have now decided to teach Phil a lesson and will ignore him until teatime! For more information on taking your pets abroad please speak to your Veterinary Surgeon. You can also follow Alfie’s adventures by liking him on the Station House Vets Facebook page. Celia Carr, RVN Station House Vets Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 5th November

ELLA... ON CINEMA “Cinema is truth at 24 frames per second,” says Jean-Luc Godard, director extraordinaire, and of course he’s quite right. There is no story-telling that can really compare to the wonders of the screen, even books, though they allow you to fabricate the story yourself, can only be enjoyed alone. Films however, are a communal learning experience, a showcase of the extent of human imagination. Now that our beautiful long summer evenings are getting shorter and darker by the day, it’s just about the time of year to put away the barbecue, and bring out the DVD player. This month in particular is going to be a fantastic time to do so, thanks to a lengthy list of highly rated films due to come out in November, no sunshine required. Coming out on the 1st, Cutie and the Boxer, a film/documentary following a Japanese couple living in New York, which tells the story of their marriage, their art, and what it means to express your identity. Also on the 1st, Philomena stars Judi Dench and Steve Coogan, as he -a struggling journalistpicks up the story of the Irish woman’s search for her long-lost son. The journey takes them to the USA, and some long-forgotten secrets are uncovered along the way. Gravity, an exciting prospect for sci-fi and thriller fans, is due to be released on the 8th, with Sandra Bullock and George Clooney portraying astronauts stuck adrift in space after a terrible accident. Apparently it is one of the best space films ever made, and going by its record break in the US box office, I wouldn’t be surprised. Perhaps one of the most anticipated films of the year, The Hunger Games sequel: Catching Fire comes out on 21st of November, with the next chapter in the dramatic dystopian saga. The 29th of November sees Carrie reincarnated. A remake of the 70s film, from the Stephen King novel, the new version has Chloe Grace Moretz as the telekinetic protagonist, and promises horror and carnage. Not to mention great TV series reappearing, such as the Doctor Who 50th anniversary on the 23rd, and the premier of Almost Human. All in all, it seems like the right kind of time to stock up on popcorn and get sitting comfortably outside is overrated. - Ella 52 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ON YOUR PLOT If you are anything like me you will spend ages drooling over pictures of bushes dripping with blackcurrants or gooseberries, trees laden with apples, or bowls full of luscious raspberries but struggle to get to grips with the realities of production on your own plot!
JOBS FOR NOVEMBER • Start to harvest parsnips after the first frosts. • Sow hardy peas or broad beans ready for an early crop next year. • Use netting or chicken wire to protect your broccoli and cabbages from hungry pigeons. • If you haven’t already done so, plant garlic and shallots. • If your rhubarb is taking over, lift and divide the crowns before replanting.
P
atience is a virtue that is definitely required for growing your own, and this is particularly so with fruit trees and bushes. I am now the proud owner of a 2 year old gooseberry bush and raspberry canes I can assure you that the waiting is worthwhile. Think carefully about where you will grow your fruit. Trees require lots of space while bushes may be incorporated in your borders, but will probably need some protection if you aren’t going to lose a lot of fruit to the birds. Late autumn is an ideal time for planting as trees and shrubs will be entering their dormant period. Trees such as apple or plum might be grafted onto a variety of different rootstocks - this sounds complicated but all you really need to know is what effect this will have on the final size of the tree. If you have limited space it is possible to buy dwarf varieties some of which can even be suitable for container growing. Pollination is also an important consideration, some varieties are self-fertile and do not need a pollinator, while others may require another variety planted close by to act as a pollinator.
54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
When planting your tree out it may benefit from staking and protection around the base. One ‘fruit’ that is a little different and very easy to grow is Rhubarb. Rhubarb is actually classified as a vegetable, but certainly tastes good used like a fruit in crumbles and pies. November is the perfect time to plant out dormant crowns. Rhubarb tends to spread well when established and needs to be divided every few years so it is often possible to obtain surplus crowns from friends or neighbours. Plant your crown with the buds just above the soil and water well the first year. Once the plants have become established you can look forward to harvesting a good crop of delicious pink stems from Spring onwards - very welcome as the first ‘fruit’ of the year

big owls by torchlight. The sight of a Great Grey Owl appearing from the gloom to silently land on a gently lit perch is one you are unlikely to forget. Whilst getting the owls practiced for the Owl Evenings we are also kept busy with the endless job of leaf raking. We are set on a 10 acre site within an area of veteran oak trees. The number of leaves that fall off these guys has to be seen to be believed! All our 40 aviaries are fully roofed so our birds remain warm and dry in the chilly Yorkshire winters.
I
t has been an eventful and challenging year. We first opened to the public on 23rd March and we don’t really seem to have stopped since then! The start of the year saw a fledgling (no pun intended!) team of flying birds come on in leaps and bounds. We have lost count of the number stoops, or dives, from 1000ft we have seen from Lora and Yarara, two of our Lanner Falcons; stoops like these are truly one of the wonders of nature. The nice weather this summer has been a great help; we have had some wonderful audiences for our flying demonstrations. September saw the arrival of some young birds bred at our sister centre in Gloucestershire. Two young Lanner Falcons, a stunning Steppe Eagle and the most delightful young Burrowing Owl are all making their debuts on the flying team. As the leaves fall off the trees and the nights draw in we are busy preparing for our Winter Owl Evenings. Starting at 7pm pre-booked visitors will be welcomed with a glass of mulled wine before heading off for a tour of the owl aviaries by torchlight. The owls are always some of our most popular residents, but you only really get to appreciate them when you go into their world; the darkness. We will fly some of our tiny owls in Christmas Tree Cottage, lit by candles and the lights from a couple of Christmas trees; this is going to be magical. A warming supper follows and then on to the main event. We head out to the flying ground to fly the

As the nights get colder the heaters under the trained flying birds will go on. We have an ever growing list of jobs for the winter. New signs for the Discovery Centre are planned as
is some improvement to our 1000m of paths. The young birds will be trained and flown right through the winter. We stay open until Christmas Eve and reopen on 1st February. Hopefully some of our breeding birds will have laid eggs by the time we reopen. We are open 7 days a week until Christmas Eve and we reopen on 1st February 2014. We fly the birds three times a day. WHAT’S IN A NAME? Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
What’s in a name? Do they matter? Perhaps one of the most important decisions a parent can make is to choose the name for their baby; after all once chosen, they are stuck with it for life. No pressure!! Hours can be given to researching names and hoping their meaning will reflect the aspirations that parents have for their children. When you consider what names mean they can be either very amusing or just unfortunate like the name ‘Kennedy’: Originally from the Gaelic meaning ‘ugly head’. Others are, of course, true...for example ‘Andrew’ meaning ‘Manly, strong, courageous, warrior!’ Why can I hear you laughing?? There is even a league to reflect the ever-changing popularity of boys’ and girls’ names. I was very surprised to discover three Biblical names in the current top five boy’s names: Noah (1), Isaac (4) and Jacob (5) and I couldn’t help but wonder why. Why, when names in the Bible teach us how we can relate to God? I wonder if parents know what they really mean... Noah is number one on the list. God saved Noah, his family and at least two of every animal from the flood, by telling Noah to build an Ark to keep them safe. I can hardly imagine the sounds and smells that must have filled the Ark! Noah means ‘rest’ or ‘to comfort’ and by putting his trust in God, Noah was able to provide rest and comfort to his family and the animals during the forty days of rain. Isaac was Abraham’s son, promised by God even though Abraham and Sarah were too old to have children. Isaac means ‘he laughs’ and this is exactly what his mum, Sarah, did when she heard God telling Abraham that they were going to have a baby. Yet, Sarah had a baby and God proved He was able to do the impossible and so perhaps we shouldn’t laugh at Him? Jacob was Isaac’s son and the father of Joseph, not Joseph the Father of Jesus, but Joseph the one who had a multi-coloured coat! Jacob, a deceiver by name and by nature, had a twin brother born first. Through deception Jacob stole his older brother’s birth right, his inheritance and blessing. Then Jacob met God, and was literally transformed over night. To reflect this change in character God gave Jacob a new name, Israel, meaning ‘God prevails’. What’s in a name? Perhaps it is all in the name? 58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

by Erica Rose INTRODUCING KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP OK, maybe our name doesn’t exactly trip off the tongue, but when it comes to putting green and sustainable ideas into practical action, we at KMEG know that what we do says more about us than what we call ourselves. The group formed in 2005 to champion the principles of the Transition movement (Kirkby became a Transition Town in 2007), which, in a nutshell, means working towards a thriving local community less dependent on fossil fuels. So over the years we have worked on a range of projects to promote things like local production of energy and food, re-use of unwanted materials, and low energy transport. We started twice-yearly Give and Take Days, where people can bring unwanted goods or find things that they need – all for free. With other local groups we also set up the Children’s Green Building Project, which gained environmentallyfriendly accommodation for the local playgroup when it was threatened with closure. We’ve also set up the Kirkbymoorside & District Energy Society, a co-operative that uses solar panels to create clean electricity, and which is now looking for more investors and more roofs! Then there’s our lotteryfunded thermal imaging camera, which our volunteers can help anyone in Kirkby to use, free of charge, to find out where heat is escaping from their homes in cold weather so they can plan efficient insulation. At the moment we’re right in the thick of apple-picking and juicing in our Kirkby Fruit Pickers project: we pick unwanted fruit that would otherwise fall off and rot in people’s gardens, and use it to raise funds for community groups and projects in the Kirkby area. We’ve also done lots of other things – too many to go into detail here! – such as Energy Days, Morsbags shopping bags, Town Feasts, the Kirkby shopping guide and much more. You can find out more about us on our website at www.kms-environmentgroup.org.uk , which also has a downloadable version of our leaflet. And if you like the sound of us and have a little time to spare, we’d be delighted to hear from you! Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 5th November

So where does Malton and District Soroptimist International fit with this? We have been established for 59 years. As a club we have been reflecting on the many changes that have occurred since 1954, both for the residents of Malton and its surrounding towns and villages and for women and girls in the UK. Tremendous strides have been made in transport, technology, communications and in women’s rights and place in Society. Sadly this is not reflected in other parts of the world and those of us who are Soroptomists are perhaps more aware than some others of the dreadful situations in which many girls and women find themselves across the world. In our small club in Malton we can make a difference to some of their lives through our fundraising and support.

300 YEARS OF HISTORY FOR JUST £5!
W
ith Christmas just around the corner, did you know you could purchase 300 years of Malton’s history for just £5?
‘300 year of continuity and change: Families and business in Malton from the 18th Century to the present’ was published in spring 2013 and offers an in-depth yet fascinating insight into three centuries of Malton’s fascinating history. The full colour publication was funded by Malton Community Interest Company to help celebrate the 300th anniversary of the Fitzwilliam Estate’s involvement with the market town. The book explores the lives and times of the early owners of the estate and looks at aristocratic dynasties alongside stalwart, memorable business owners and town characters. Familiar Malton names are the Yates family, the Leefes, the Tate-Smiths and the Woodalls, all of which get a significant mention in the book.
Norman Maitland, whose meticulous research covers the 300-year timeframe, said: ‘Malton is a distinctive community: ... key families and business have played, and continue to play, a huge role in its development – Malton has always been a town with families and business at its heart. ‘The book begins in 1713, when the Hon Thomas Watson Wentworth purchased the Manor of Malton thus beginning a long association between the town and families variously known as Wentworth, Watson-Wentworth, Wentworth-Fitzwilliam and Naylor-Leyland.’ The profitable agricultural hinterland forms the backdrop to the successful market town, along with its long connection with the horseracing industry. The 32-page, lavishly illustrated book can be purchased from Hoppers in the Market Place and from the Tourist Information Centre, St Michael’s Street.

RYEDALE WALKING GROUP
Ryedale Walking Group (affiliated to the Ramblers Association), is a well established group with over 70 members. RWG walks all year round at weekends, locally and throughout Yorkshire. Most of our weekend walks are 5-12 miles long. In addition, during the summer months we have weekday evening walks of around 5-6 miles. We also organise short walking breaks for our members and some challenge walks throughout the year. New members are welcome to join us any time. We have a modest annual membership fee of £5 to cover insurance and expenses. The social side of our group is important too, so we regularly dine out, visit tearooms and pubs. We look in churches and at anything of architectural interest. Our members enjoy a 10% discount at two local walking shops. Full details of our walks programme can be found on our website at www.ryedalewalkinggroup.btck.co.uk or email Phil@yorkshirewalker.co.uk

FOSTER HOMES WANTED
R
escue dogs come in all shapes and sizes and for many different reasons, but they all have one thing in common, they need kind and loving homes. Some of our dogs find homes within days whilst others take a few weeks and in some cases months to rehome. We are looking for special people who are willing to open their hearts and homes to our dogs while they are waiting for their forever homes. If you have a secure garden, no young children and are at home to look after a dog we would love to hear from you. Fostering should be fun, you can foster as often as you wish providing we have a suitable dog for you. Most of our fosterers prefer to take a break between fostering and that is fine with us. The reward of helping a poor unloved dog feel confident and secure is wonderful, it may be upsetting when your foster dog leaves you but believe me it is worth it. They will never forget your kindness!

Please help us to keep our dogs out of kennels and bring kindness into their lives, possibly for the first time ever. For more information on fostering or dogs needing home, our events or how you can help please visit our website: www.yorkshire-coast-dog-rescue.com or contact us on:
