W

elcome to November edition.

November is a month which has lots going for it! Forget that the nights have drawn in and the weather’s unpredictable – think about fireworks, bonfires and scrumptious cinder toffee! With numerous firework displays taking place it’s a time to enjoy the sparklers and Catherine Wheels (safely, of course!) and then look forward to Christmas. However, November is also a sombre month: Remembrance Sunday takes place on the 9th November. With the centenary of the outbreak of World War One being marked this year, we have a double page feature detailing the services, parades and festivals of Remembrance - a chance for all of us to pay our respects. The end of November also marks the run up to the festive season! With Christmas Light SwitchOns, Santa Dashes, choral concerts and much more, it’s a time to get that Christmas cake started and perhaps get ahead to avoid lastminute stressful shopping trip by visiting the local markets and shops. We can’t imagine how much preparation Bryony Balen did for her South Pole trek. Bryony is the youngest Briton to reach the South Pole, set in the heart of the Antarctic continent. She trekked out from the Hercules Inlet on the Antarctic Coast and her fascinating talk at Norton College will raise funds for Save the Children and 1st Norton Scouts. We welcome a new column writer this month. Emily is a local teenager and you can read her first column on page 20. Until next month…

THERMAL IMAGING CAMERA BOOKINGS NOW BEING TAKEN It’s that time of year again. Find out where heat (and money!) escapes from your home The Lottery funded camera is available locally, free of charge, to help you discover exactly where heat is escaping in cold weather, so helping save money and fuel. It could be useful if you are thinking about making improvements to wall and roof insulation. The camera picks up heat, rather than light like a normal camera. It’s surprising how much heat can be lost around windows, doors and skirting boards, up the chimney of an unused fireplace, as well as through poorly insulated roofs and walls. This example shows how heat is being lost through a bay window and through the wall from a radiator under the window. Inexpensive solutions could be using thicker curtains and putting foil on the wall behind the radiator to reflect heat back into the room. KMEG volunteers have been using the camera in the Kirkbymoorside area since 2012, from late autumn through the winter months into early spring. The best weather conditions are cloudy, dry and cold! You choose if you want any pictures taken. They can be emailed or printed for you. To book the camera: email Helen Gundry at helenspost@hotmail.co.uk or phone 01751 432447. We can then fix the best time to call round with the camera. For more information about the camera and thermal imaging, check our website www. kms-environmentgroup.org.uk/ Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 4th November

Festive Fun in Helmsley

Helmsley is a great place to visit for those who are feeling full of Christmas spirit this December. The town’s third annual Christmas Tree Festival begins on Saturday 6th December. Held in Helmsley’s historic All Saints Church, 30 locally sourced 6ft trees will be on display, decorated by different businesses and organisations from the town along the theme of “An Iconic Christmas”. With creative takes on everything from the Queen’s Speech to Christmas Dinner, there’ll definitely be some eye-catching displays! The Festival runs until 21st December and is open daily from 10am to 4pm. To coincide with the opening of the Christmas Tree Festival,

Helmsley’s many independent businesses will also be supporting SmallBusinessSaturday with a Festive Fun Day on 6th December. A pop up ice rink will appear at The Black Swan on the town’s picturesque Market Place from 4th – 7th December. Open to the public from 12noon – 8pm daily, there’s room for 50 skaters at a time, and for those who prefer to watch, delicious wintery refreshments will be served from an Alpine-style log cabin. Other fun things on the day include a visit from Santa, a Dog Fancy Dress Show, light projections, live music and entertainment, children’s arts and crafts, games, competitions and plenty of great Yorkshire food, drink and hospitality.

FIRES • STOVES • FIREPLACES

Entrance to the Christmas tree festival is free, although donations are welcome and will be split between Helmsley Christmas lights fund, All Saints Church, St Catherine’s Hospice and other local charities. Reduced car parking charges will also apply for 6th December.

Remembering in Ryedale Remembrance Day takes place on November 11 to mark the moment the guns of the First World War fell silent, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of 1918. Remembrance Sunday, 9th November, is the day put aside to remember all those who have given their lives for our peace and freedom. Members of the British Legion care about the lives of the Armed Forces family, past, present and future. The Poppy Appeal is the Legion’s biggest fundraising campaign and runs year-round. Lapel poppies are available to buy in shops, supermarkets, pubs and clubs from the last week of October until 11 November. From Design to Completion “Bear Builders are keen to help you achieve your end vision (however big or small),” says Lawrence, one of the partners, “We listen to our customers, keeping their vision at the heart of any project. There is no compromise on standards, professionalism and workmanship.”

Design to completion, we build your vision – this is the inspiring motto from Bear Builders. Based in Ryedale with 19 years combined experience in building and joinery, this family-run business is passionate about achieving the best possible results in design, development and service. “Keeping customer care at the very heart of the business, we believe we will provide an experience that will both surprise and please our customers,” said partner Bjorn Risi. “Over the years, principal partners have worked on many local building projects, from new constructions to 400 year old listed buildings where using traditional construction methods is critical. It is hugely satisfying to help a customer achieve their vision for their property.”

Bjorn explained: “We want to exceed expectations, and provide excellent customer service and satisfaction. We want our customers to say, ‘That was excellent, we’re not used to that level of professionalism from a building company.’ Our principal partners manage each project, and we engage only the best local trade experts.” Bear Builders would like to establish themselves in the area as the best and first choice for anyone seeking a building company. New projects ordered by the 31st December 2014 will have all materials supplied at cost price to both commercial and domestic customers. Call now and see how Bear Builders can help you on 01653 658102 or call Lawrence on 07717 737294 for a free estimate, and friendly, professional advice. Or visit them at www.bearbuilders.co.uk and email info@bearbuilders.co.uk.

Bear Builders is a member of the Federation of Master Builders, an organisation that helps with the fight against rogue traders and showcases genuine and competent building organisations.

From small projects up to reroofing, extensions, full construction, new builds or complete renovations. Friendly and helpful service to help you make the best choices for your building project.

Small Jobs Welcome

Perhaps you’ll spare two minutes in silence when the clocks strike eleven. Perhaps you’ll simply wear a poppy. Ultimately I believe the act of remembrance can be as big or small as you make it. As long as you remember. Being a Brownie from the age of seven followed by being a Girl Guide up until the age of fifteen, I have fond memories of Remembrance Sunday. Frosty mornings wrapped up in thermals at the memorial in Malton, marching through town as a flag bearer. Whilst being too young to truly understand the meaning of Remembrance, my memories emulate everything that Remembrance Sunday infers. Unity, drawn from all generations as they gather to remember the noble sacrifices made by the past for their future. Perhaps one of the most poignant experiences that comes to mind when I think about Remembrance was the service that I witnessed at Menin Gate in Belgium when I visited on my school’s battlefield tour. The bustling tourist square is struck silent as last post echoes loudly through the streets and people from all around the world lay wreaths to commemorate the fallen of World War One. It is incredibly moving, how almost one hundred years later the streets are still lined with people who don’t want to forget. This service happens every single day at the Menin Gate, 365 days a year. Suddenly, Remembrance seemed so much more to me than a single day. It is in everything we do and in the lives we lead as a consequence of the bravery of so many who fought for our freedom. For this reason alone, we will always remember. Emily

What’s in your pocket? If I leave home without my mobile phone, I go back; I can’t be without my phone! What do you always carry with you? What can’t you be without? Some must have a watch, a handkerchief, spare change for parking or a shopping trolley, or a credit card to feel prepared to face the day. In 1914 those called into Active Service were given a little book designed to go in the front pocket of their uniform; even the corners were rounded to prevent creasing. On the front were the words, ‘Please carry this in your pocket and read it every day.’ Millions were issued to soldiers at training camps, distributed through charity tea huts at the Front, given out to wounded soldiers by nurses, or handed out by chaplains. This little book was considered essential even when the country was at war. This year we commemorate the 100th Anniversary of World War 1 and on Sunday 9th November churches across our nation will be holding special Services of Remembrance. I have found a commemorative edition of this little book and was struck by how our views and values have changed over the past 100 years. This essential little book was the Gospel According to Saint John, one of the accounts of the life of Jesus recorded in the Bible. In the front was a personal message from Lord Robert’s that reads, ‘I ask you to put your trust in God. He will watch over you and strengthen you. You will find in this little Book guidance when you are in health, comfort when you are in sickness and strength when you are in adversity’. Lord Roberts was a war hero, one of the most successful commanders of the 19th Century, was awarded the Victoria Cross and became an inspiration to those in active service. Yet Lord Roberts needed the words of this little book because he found they gave peace when he was afraid, strength when under pressure and comfort even in the face of death. The same words can be found today, but many have never read them. We still need peace, strength and comfort but no longer are they carried as an essential item or read on a daily basis. When Jesus was asked how we should pray his answer included these simple words, ‘Give us today our daily bread’, perhaps He knew what we needed to carry. Looking to find some extra space in your home without spending a fortune this winter?

I

f you have a conservatory, you will know that you can’t use it comfortably for many months of the year - it’s the room at the end of the house that no-one really wants to go in. It’s usually stifling hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. You might have tried thermal blinds, and there are roof replacement companies who will fit a completely new roof on your conservatory, but this can cost thousands of pounds and often requires planning permission. For an elegant, cost-effective solution that really works, you need to have a chat with local Yorkshire company, Inceil. Their expert team will fit an insulated ceiling to your conservatory in 1 or 2 days which will completely transform it. An insulated ceiling from Inceil will save up to 80% of the heat that is lost through the roof in the winter, and maintain a better temperature

throughout the year. You don’t lose head-height as they follow the existing roof-line and it’s so much nicer to look up to a smooth plastered ceiling rather than a plastic roof covered in algae and bird droppings! If you want to find out more, you can watch a video on www.inceil.co.uk or call York 01904 891936 to arrange a free survey and quote.

Now what will you do with that extra usable space!

Is your conservatory too HOT in the summer and too COLD in the winter? There is a solution…

“I’ve always had a keen interest in joinery,” explained Michael. “I gained my City and Guilds Certificate in Joinery with ‘Distinction’. After working at a joinery firm and for building contractors, I knew kitchen design was the area I wished to specialise in. “I live and work in a lovely part of Yorkshire and I am keen to appeal to locals who might just need a joinery repair doing right through to a full kitchen, designed especially for them.” MCR Joinery offers the full kitchen installation package, from design, to supply and fit, all with minimum fuss and mess. Michael explained: “Having your kitchen upgraded can be disruptive but we carefully consider how to plan the project, so customers can just sit back, relax and watch their dream kitchen become a reality.” Michael’s team of local trades-people includes builders, plumbers and electricians, so all aspects are covered. Michael added: “And if you have bought a ready-made kitchen, don’t pay over the odds for installation, as our prices are a lot cheaper – music to any Yorkshire person’s ears!”MCR Joinery can also help with smaller jobs such as door fitting, wardrobes, and cupboards, all finished to an excellent standard.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

8 Easy Ways to Cut Your Heating Oil Costs This Winter With fuel poverty on the rise and cold weather just around the corner, energy efficiency is more important than ever. If you’re on heating oil and would like to make your supply go further this winter, check out our useful tips for easy ways to stay warm for longer! 1. INSULATE

60% of the heat that escapes from your home is lost through the walls and roof. By insulating your property, using draft excluders and even closing your curtains in the evening, you can retain heat and reduce your fuel use.

2. SHOP AROUND

You might have a regular energy supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil.

7. BLEED YOUR RADIATORS

By removing excess air from your central heating system, you can make sure that your boiler isn’t working harder than necessary (and burning more fuel than necessary) to heat your home.

8. PROTECT YOUR TANK

As winter creeps in, heating oil thefts increase. By using CCTV, installing a security light or adding a padlock to the opening of your tank, you can take steps to deter thieves and keep your oil supply safe.

3. GRAB A GADGET

Pop an insulation panel behind your radiators to reflect heat back into the room, or invest in a radiator booster, which will circulate any warm air that would have been lost behind the radiator, around your home.

4. ADD AN ADDITIVE

As well as upgrading your fuel, oil additives can help to improve the efficiency of your boiler, which in turn reduces the amount of oil required to heat your home.

5. BOOK A SERVICE

The best way to make sure that your boiler is working efficiently (and not using more oil than necessary to heat your home) is to have it serviced annually. Book a service with an OFTEC registered technician through BoilerJuice, to make sure that your boiler is in full working condition, before the cold weather hits.

6. DIAL IT DOWN

It’s important to stay warm during winter, but by throwing on an extra jumper and turning your thermostat down by just one degree, you can cut your fuel use by up to 10%!

PEN LIFE - BEST REGIONAL FINANCIAL PLANNER 2014 Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner

These denote the very highest standards of ethical practice and client care. And they’re the standards that Consumer Association, “Which”, insist upon when referring their readers to professional financial planners.

I

’m dead chuffed that Pen-Life have won the prestigious “Best Regional Financial Planner” gong in the Wealth & Money Management Awards 2014. Consumers could be forgiven for tarring all financial people with the same brush as a result of the various financial miss-selling scandals over the years. As a consequence, we have to work doubly hard to win the trust of clients. And one way of doing that is through awards and independent accreditations. My firm was the first, and I think is still the only, financial planning practice in Yorkshire to receive both Chartered status and the British Kite Mark BS 8577.

So who should seek financial advice? Money Savings Expert Martin Lewis says “When it comes to making life-changing or complex financial decisions, even the money-savvy should consider paying an adviser to ensure they get it right.” A good example of where consumers are mixed up about finances concerns the good old Individual Savings Account (ISA). Most people think they understand ISAs. They are considered tax efficient. There’s no income tax to pay on interest. And any gains made are free of Capital Gains Tax. But did you know that the vast majority of ISAs will be subject to Inheritance Tax (IHT) when you die with assets worth more than £325,000. And IHT is a massive 40%. So it’s nonsense chasing an extra half

a percent interest if almost half of it is going to end up down the IHT pan. Another area of complete misunderstanding surrounds pensions. And that’s set to get worse. On the face of it, Government proposals to offer free independent “guidance” to everyone considering taking their retirement benefits sounds like a good idea. But when that guidance is delivered by unqualified and inexperienced civil servants, the whole fiasco seems doomed to failure. We want to make sure your money lasts as long as you do and that anything left over goes to your family and not the Tax Man. If you want that too, you might benefit from a free nononsense chat with one of our friendly advisers. Trust me – we’re on your side.

If you’d like to learn how to make your retirement savings last as long as you do, get my FREE Wealth Kit which looks at some of the financial issues facing people retiring now. LOCAL CHOIR INAND BAND AID OF LEUKAEMIA & JOIN FORCES LYMPHOMA RESEARCH

H

armonia Choir and Swinton & District Excelsior Band will play all the right notes at a charity Christmas Concert Sunday 7th December from 7.30pm at the Trinity Methodist Church, Norton. The two musical groups will raise funds for the charity Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, and the evening will also include a raffle. Harmonia Choir includes 55 female singers, and celebrates its sixth birthday this month.

Choir Director Alison Davis said: “Harmonia is a choir which makes choral music accessible and fun. Our repertoire is varied and includes gospel, folk, pop, songs from the shows, contemporary classical songs and more. “The choir has recently enjoyed singing at the Malton Food Lovers Festival, Castle Howard and Eskdale Festival. Many women have formed firm friendships through their involvement in

Harmonia and the sound reflects how much joy singing brings to all of them.” Alison also explained there is currently a waiting list for those that would like to join the choir. “This is very flattering! The choir has built up steadily over the years,” said Alison. Bandmaster at Swinton & District Excelsior Band, Robin Putter, said: “Playing in Swinton Band is much more than a hobby. Members meet formally at least twice a week, and informally all the time – it’s less like a club, more like an extended family. “This event is a wonderful chance to join forces and raise funds for a worthy cause.” The chosen charity, Leukaemia & Lymphoma Research, is supported by choir members Jane and Chloë Jackson. “We were delighted when Robin agreed with Alison that the concert’s proceeds could be donated to the charity,” explained Jane, whose husband, Eric, died last year from a very rare form of leukaemia. Jane, Chloe and her brother Nicholas have now raised over £2,000 for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.

A Picture SAyS A thouSAnd WordS

- and talented Cyah Flynn can help this well-known phrase come true!

C

yah is a portrait artist who creates beautiful portraits of pets, people and even treasured possessions.

An ideal Christmas or birthday gift, Cyah just needs a high resolution photo of the person, pet or object and she then puts her pencil to work to create a beautiful piece of art. “My current work is in artist’s pencil,” said Cyah. “Pencil work is very detailed and an A4-sized portrait takes me around four or five hours to complete. “I work from photographs, so the higher the resolution of the photo, the more I can put into the pencil work. “Also when I have a good quality image to work from, it means I can work on the special areas such as the eyes, which are key to creating the resemblance and capturing what is special about the person or pet.”

Cyah is currently studying art at York College, and only discovered her talent only recently when she started drawing members of her family. Cyah can also draw and personalise a cartoon character for children, which makes an ideal birthday or Christmas gift. “The drawings I create are bespoke and unique,” said Cyah. “They are a great present for someone and it is something that can be kept forever. “It is lovely when you see the person’s reaction when they receive the picture I have created for them, particularly if it’s a surprise!” So don’t ponder which present to get someone this Christmas. Let Cyah create a special gift which will express much more than mere words can say!

f you play sport, healthy feet can help promote effective training – and prevention is better than cure when it comes to foot problems. Stuart Moore Foot Care is one of Ryedale’s leading foot specialists, and Stuart has some ‘handy’ hints for anyone embarking on a winter training schedule for a spring marathon or regular sport fixtures. “The human foot is truly remarkable,” said Stuart. Each of our feet has 26 bones, 33 joints and over 100 muscles. “First and foremost, properly fitting shoes are a must. Runners should not be wearing fashion trainers. Head for specialist sports outlets and running shops. Trained advisors can assess your running style so you can purchase the best footwear for you. “Well-fitting running shoes go a long way to preventing damage to feet and lower limbs, as the cushioning will be supportive during training. Even proper sports socks help, as they tend to have a smaller weave, helping keep feet healthy.” Stuart says feet can take a real pounding, particularly if you run on tarmac. “Correct footwear is one thing, but after-care is just as important,” explained Stuart. “Once you’ve showered, taking care to dry your feet carefully afterwards is crucial, no matter how much you ache!” Stuart can help soothe the foot problems which runners often suffer, but it’s important that niggles such as damaged toenails and athlete’s foot are treated by a clinical specialist. “Sorting these problems out sooner rather than later can prevent long-term damage,” said Stuart. So while prevention is better than cure, if your hardworking feet need some attention, Stuart Moore can help maintain and improve your overall foot health.

Coast to Pole

Talk by Bryony Balen Tuesday 25th November

At Norton College, Langton Road, Norton, Malton, 7pm £3 per ticket available from Ian Appleby on 01653 694900 or Sue Hawes on 01653 693296 x281 In aid of Save the Children and 1st Norton Scout Group

On January 20th 2012, Bryony Balen became the youngest Briton to trek to the South Pole from the Hercules Inlet. Over 56 days, one of them her 21st birthday, she travelled a total distance of 705 miles over the coldest environment on our planet. The coldest temperature recorded at the Pole was -89.2°C and there are wind speeds of up to 300km/hr. Bryony followed in the footsteps of Amundsen and a team of other Norwegians, the first expedition to reach the South Pole on 14th December 1911. This was not Bryony’s first adventure, she has been mountaineering for many years, and ever since achieving her Gold Duke of Edinburgh award she has continued to develop the skills and attributes needed to pursue ambitious trips such as a week Nordic skiing, climbing Mont Blanc and Mount Elbrus and camping in Svalbard. At Norton College Hall, this amazing ex-scout will join us to talk about her trek to the South Pole and what it was like to celebrate her birthday in the middle of an Antarctic expedition. Proceeds are going towards both Save the Children and 1st Norton Scout group. 46 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

WINTER AT THE

INTERNATIONAL CENTRE FOR

BIRDS OF PREY

DUNCOMBE PARK HELMSLEY

We will fly some of our tiny owls in Christmas Tree Cottage, lit by candles and the lights from a couple of Christmas trees; this is going to be magical. A warming supper follows and then on to the main event. We head out to the flying ground to fly the big owls by torchlight. The sight of a Great Grey Owl appearing from the gloom to silently land on a gently lit perch is one you are unlikely to forget.

T

he year has gone so quickly! We have had a really good 2014; visitor numbers are very good and the birds are all well.

In fact this year saw us breeding Grey Buzzard Eagles, Harris Hawks and, most exciting of all, we bred a Griffon Vulture. Vultures all over the world are having a very tough time at the moment. The International Centre for Birds of Prey has always played a leading role in worldwide vulture conservation, and this is just the cherry on top! Autumn is always an exciting time, as that is when we have young birds joining the flying team. New for this year are a Peregrine Falcon, two Ural Owls, a Snowy Owl, an Abyssinian Eagle Owl, a Kestrel and a home-bred Harris Hawk and Grey Buzzard Eagle. We are also delighted to have Typhoon, a young New Zealand Falcon joining the team. He might be the only New Zealand Falcon on public display in the country. We are also getting a couple of giant Steller’s Sea Eagles trained and ready for flying duties. As the leaves fall off the trees and the nights draw in we are busy preparing for our Winter Owl Evenings. Starting at 7pm pre-booked visitors will be welcomed with a glass of mulled wine before heading off for a tour of the owl aviaries by torchlight. The owls are always some of our most popular residents, but you only really get to appreciate them when you go into their world; the darkness.

We are hoping to get another aviary block built over the winter. This will be for some of our flying birds and will be close to our flying ground. It will enable us to add an extra dimension to the flying demonstrations. We do flying demonstrations every day, and are open 7 days a week until Christmas Eve. We reopen on 1 February 2015, by which time hopefully some of our breeding birds will have laid eggs. We have free parking and when you visit us you also get access into the 300 acres of surrounding parkland, which is a wonderful place to go for a walk and admire the autumn colours. Bring the advert opposite for a discount on entry. Oh – and don’t forget to get your Christmas Tree from Duncombe Park whilst you are here!

THINGS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES TO CONSIDER WHEN LOOKING FOR A WEBSITE:

BY ROB DAVIES 1. Select your web design company very carefully. ALWAYS make sure you see examples of their work and obtain references from customers. 2. Make sure you obtain quotes from 2 or 3 different companies and don’t spend more than is necessary – if you go to the right company you can get a brilliant website for hundreds, not thousands of pounds! 3. Choose a company with design expertise as well as technical ability. Your website should look stunning as well as function properly! 4. Once you have your website, you should be able to easily make changes to it yourself in order to keep it up to date (and satisfy search engines!) 5. Your website should be submitted to search engines upon launch so the likes of Google, Bing and Yahoo know your website exists. Your website should also be “optimised” for these search engines. This means including key words within your content so when someone types these words into a search engine your website is considered to be of interest to the user therefore ranking it higher. 6. You need to be able to plan your cash flow, so you need a guarantee that your monthly subscription price will not increase. 7. Getting your business online is not just about having a website. You should also take advantage of social media to drive traffic to your website and vice versa. 8. You no doubt have plans to grow your business over the next few years so your website will also need to grow. You should be able to add extra pages whenever you need to. 9. Your website should be a key marketing tool for your business so like any marketing tool you need to measure its effectiveness. You therefore need a website that has access to tools like Google Analytics. 10. The world of websites is forever changing as new developments are being rolled out constantly. Your website can soon become out-dated if you are not entitled to updates when new tools and components are developed. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 51

Ed Jowitt MCSP LCSP(Phys)

Malton Museum Foundation announced today that the Arts Council has awarded Malton Museum its prestigious Accreditation, an industry standard that places the Museum alongside the best museums in the country. “This is marvellous news” said Ann Clark, Head of Collections at the Museum and one of the team of volunteers who now run it. “Our Museum had to close in 2012 when its old site in Malton Town Hall became unavailable. Since then we have managed to arrange small changing exhibitions in Malton’s Subscription Rooms in Yorkersgate. These have been very successful. The Arts Council inspectors, however, were even more impressed by the way our team of volunteers have transformed the Museum stores, improved the documentation, and brought our wonderful collections up to national standards.” In welcoming the award Peter Addyman, Chairman of Malton Museum Foundation, said that Accreditation is the public’s assurance of the standards expected in a well-run museum. More than that, he said, this will open the way for support from funding agencies in the future . “We are working on some exciting ideas for a new Museum for Malton. This accolade - and the recognition of the importance and fascination of our collections - will help us towards a new era when the Museum will once again be fully open.”

Wrap the dough in clingfilm and chill for at least 15 min. • Gently roll out the pastry to line a 1½”/4 cm deep, x 7”/18 cm base tart tin. Brush the pastry all over with a little of the beaten egg. Place the pastry in the fridge while you make the filling. FOR THE FILLING • In a large bowl beat the eggs and egg yolks lightly with the sugar. • Warm the cream to a gentle simmer, then pour slowly over the beaten eggs, stirring constantly. Be careful not to overheat the cream or it will curdle the eggs. Add the vanilla extract if you are using. 54 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Top Tips from a dental professional

Dentures (Part 1)

Dentures what are they? by Christine Parker

Dentures are a relatively BDS (GDC 72136) simple and cost effective solution for the replacement of 1 or more missing teeth. Whilst there are other methods of replacing teeth such as bridgework (2 or more crowns joined together from a natural supporting tooth.) or implants where a titanium screw is placed in the jaw to support a crown, these can be significantly more expensive and in some cases the remaining natural teeth may be too compromised to take the extra weight. The treatment to provide them can also be much more invasive and can take many months to complete. Dentures on the other hand can be placed the day a tooth is extracted an ‘immediate’ denture so to speak, these may then be worn until full healing can be established. Well constructed dentures can help to restore your smile, they can also give you the choice of altering the shade, shape and position of your teeth and even enhancing the fullness of your lips and reducing lines and wrinkles on the face. Like all treatments and natural teeth they eventually wear or loosen and need replacement. By correctly caring for them by thoroughly cleansing them in the evening and after meals your denture should serve you well for several years. Dentures often referred to as a ‘plate’ can be made of plastic, both flexible and solid, and also metal commonly cobalt chrome alloy or even gold! They can cover all of the plate or just a small part and may be held in place by friction or by clasps. If you have a denture that you feel is past its best then please contact Georgina at Howardian Dental Practice to discuss an assessment.

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett

Gig

Simon Armitage Simon Armitage is best known as a poet, but he is also an accomplished lyricist, reviewer and storyteller. Subtitled ‘The Life and Times of a Rock Star Fantasist’, it documents his experiences with music, from his early listening habits, through teenage obsessions and on to his final acceptance as an adult of the fact that he will never be a rock star. This is swiftly followed by his decision to form a band and attempt to become just that. Whilst this is an ideal book for dipping into it is almost impossible to stop once you begin. Part observation, part autobiography, the stories are often laugh-out-loud funny, yet the next page will bring a moment of sadness, and even tragedy. For many, it is the recognition of themselves in the tales that Armitage tells that creates the greatest sense of engagement. Readers of a certain age will cringe as he recalls his punk phase and then realise that they too are now amongst the oldest gig-goers. This is also very much a book about Yorkshire. But even if you don’t get the reference to Corporation Pop, it is handily explained. All in all, an excellent read, either at one sitting, or as a pick-andmix view of modern life.

Smelly Bill’s Smelliest Stories Daniel Postgate It can be difficult to choose books for newly confident readers: they are happy to say that they are ‘too big’ for picture books, but faced with a paperback novel they can feel out of their depth. So, this omnibus edition of Smelly Bill stories is perfect. The book contains 3 Smelly Bill stories, each told in lively rhyme.

Each story moves along at a rattling pace; keeping the reader’s interest, while slipping in a range of different vocabulary. Not only will young readers laugh a lot, they will also learn a range of new words as they go. And given the charming nature of every tale, you won’t mind taking over if it gets too tricky.

NORTON HISTORY ON DISPLAY IN TOWN’S ‘HIDDEN GEM’ A further glimpse into the past of Norton is on show next month in the town’s historic council chamber. The Woodhams-Stone Collection is holding a second exhibition in the building on Saturday November 1st focussing on the town and its rich heritage and giving visitors a rare opportunity to see inside the chamber. Described as a ‘hidden gem’ – the former court house on Commercial Street retains many of the original features including wooden panelling, magistrates seating area and prisoners ‘dock’. Project Officer for the Woodhams-Stone Collection Sarah Maultby said: ‘We are holding an open day to let local people see even more of the items that we are gradually bringing out of our store as we catalogue the entire collection a as part of the latest stage of the project which is being funded by The Heritage Lottery. ‘The town council chamber, as a significant historic building in the town, is an ideal venue and gives people the chance to have a look at a building they may never have visited before as well as seeing more of the fascinating items from The Woodhams-Stone Collection.

The exhibition will run from 10am to 3pm in Norton on Derwent town council chamber, 84, Commercial Street, Norton (next to Norton library) on Saturday November 1st. Entry is free but donations towards supporting the future of the Collection are welcome.

The churches in Norton would like to say a big THANK YOU to everyone who has taken part, come along to events and shown an interest in Love Norton 14. We started with a night with Bobby Ball and have had concerts and fun days as well as a few smaller things. We’ve also been delivering newsletters to all residents telling people about what goes on in our churches. Norton Community Primary School made a great display of things they love about Norton. There is more to come! On 2nd November the Family Fun Night and Firework Extravaganza will be at Norton College (5.30-8pm). St Peter’s on Langton Road will be hosting an even bigger and better Christmas Tree Festival from 29th Nov to 7th December. And watch out – there may be extras planned between now and the end of the year. Our aim has been to show that we love Norton. It’s a great place and is a really good community to be part of. We also want to show that God loves Norton too – no one is outside that love and we are here if anyone wants to know more about that. But… we won’t stop loving Norton once 2014 is over. There will be more that we will be doing together for Norton. Let us know what you might like. Let us know what you think of Love Norton 14. You can contact us at any of the churches in Norton, via our facebook page lovenorton14 or by e-mail lovenorton14@gmail.com. From the churches of St Peter, Trinity Methodist, Bethel, Elim Ryedale, Ryedale Baptists and Salvation Army.

Les Harper (Pickering) tel: 07929 599965 or 01751 472324 Sadly there was no event this year but there could be future events if more people are prepared to help. People are needed to join the committee and contribute to organising the day’s activities. More volunteers also needed, particularly anyone with transport for some of the equipment, before and after the show day to help with setting up the field and dismantling it afterwards. It is a family day out and no-one wants to see it come to an end. Our committee now has two new members but we are still few in number and need more help if this lovely traditional event is to continue. If you are interested in helping to stage a 2015 day to remember please come to our next meeting on 29th October at 8pm in the Half Moon pub in Acklam. GARDENING Hedging Your Bets

O

k, so it’s a terrible heading, but November is the perfect time for planting new hedges, and at this time of year it’s a very safe bet. Prior to the use of containerised plants (which can be planted at almost any time of the year) planting between November and March was a gardeners only option, and as far as the plants are concerned it’s still the best by far. When plants are dormant (asleep) they will hardly even notice being moved, and by spring when their new leaves emerge their roots will have already pushed through the surrounding soil in their new home. Hedges are often thought of as hard work, time consuming and have been at the centre of heated neighbourly debates (whether it’s cutting them too low or letting them grow too high). They are great for blocking out unsightly views, adding privacy, and

also make a wonderful place for wildlife to live, rest and nest. For the past 3 years we’ve had a variety of birds nesting in our Yew hedge and the addition of extra life in the garden always pleases me. If you’re looking for a quick solution to a green screen, then you have two options, either instant (such as a 2m high instant hedge, pre grown, trained and clipped, perfect for the impatient gardener), or Leylandii conifers. As I write this I can hear the screams, but it really is the best option for speed and it’s cost-effective. Do be aware that legally, as of a couple of years ago, you have to keep its growth contained to 2m high if on a boundary (this does not apply to any other species). For the more patient gardener, try the classic evergreen Yew hedging. Like most beautiful things in life, it’s more expensive to buy. It’s also slower

I also favour the evergreen Portuguese laurel, which has a smaller leaf than the more common cherry laurel, or Beech if it doesn’t need to be evergreen. For a smaller hedge it has to be Box, but alternatives include Lavender, Berberis, Lonicera, and for the perfect no-cut low hedge go for a small Hebe, (simply choose a variety which only grows to the height you actually want the hedge to grow to). Whichever hedge you choose, the ground preparation should be the same. For containerised, bare-root or root-balled hedges, dig out a trench which follows the line of the proposed hedge, this should be at least one and a half times wider and deeper than the rootball. Fork over the base of the trench and return some of the soil, so that when you plant the hedge it sits at the same level as previously planted (i.e. not too deep). Backfill with the removed soil, add a handful of bonemeal per plant, and dig in. Firm with your boot then water well before mulching with 5cm of compost, manure or bark clippings.

TIME FOR A TRAILER SERVICE

A

s towing equipment specialists, Harland Fletcher Towing Centre would like to remind customers it’s time to check your trailer is up to standard and ready for the winter. Harland Fletcher are based on the A1079 to the east of York and offer trailer sales, service, parts and hire along with tow bar fitting for all makes and models. You can be assured of a professional and friendly approach. Registered with the National Trailer and Towing Association, and upholding the NTTA’s Quality Secured Accredited scheme, Harland Fletcher can take care of any trailer up to 3,500kg. Stuart of Harland Fletcher said: “Soon there will be salt and grit on the road. That, along with the nights drawing in, adds to the wear and tear of a vehicle. Brakes, lights, floorboards, doors – they all get worked hard. “Our professional team can help with an trailer from a small car trailer up to and including horseboxes, building and plant trailers. Most trailers require a

service after around 6,000 miles to keep them in a good, roadworthy condition. “Don’t be that person who is ‘caught out’ and ends up with an upside-down trailer at the side of the road, or a missing wheel. A full service history will help you avoid this situation.” As NTTA accredited dealers, once a vehicle is serviced by Harland Fletcher, the customer receives an NTTA service certificate to make up a service history. “A full service history for towing vehicles helps it to retain value and also give customers peace of mind that their vehicle is safe to use,” said Stuart.

MOTORING Peugeot 308

By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk

Peugeot must have sprinkled fairy dust over its designers, because there are now some attractive motors in its automotive stable, including the 308. It’s no secret that the French firm hasn’t always produced beautiful motors – yet, conversely, Peugeot has created some of the most popular cars on the road. To bring more of a balance to the automaker’s looks department, the brand is moving up-market. It’s an initiative started several years ago and seen most recently with the 208 and 2008. The initial design brief of the New 308 had the highest levels of quality at its heart and that has been more than noticed already. Crowned 2014 European Car of the Year, at the Geneva Motor Show, the suave Peugeot offers a touch of technology, comfort and practicality. The new 308 is the fourth Peugeot model to be distinguished by the ‘Car of the Year’ accolade; it comes after the 307 (2002), 405 (1988) and 504 (1969). The appearance of the Pug is more akin to the latest Mercedes Benz A-Class than anything else. The front of the car is dominated by a ‘floating’ front grille and by a strong lighting signature. Slim full-LED headlamps glitter like diamonds and the striking illumina72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

tion continues at the rear, with the three Peugeot lion ‘claws’ drawn by piercing red LED lamps. Inside, the 308 includes a touchscreen panel on the dashboard for added indulgence. It also has a practical purpose; it brings together many of the infotainment controls in one place, for ease of use and to create a contemporary and uncluttered cabin. Everything is arranged for an experience that is intuitive and relaxing so that you can focus entirely on the road ahead. The head-up instrument layout means that information can be clearly read easily and safely, looking over rather than through the wheel.

The Peugeot also has a compact steering wheel and newly developed electric power steering, resulting in a responsive and controlled driving experience. My 1.6, 156bhp petrol powered ‘Feline’ model certainly impressed me with its ability to stick to the road and hug bends - even when pushed hard. The car is stuffed to the brim with safety packages too. As well as multiple airbags it has an ‘Emergency Collision Alert System’, which gives out an audible warning should you get too close to the backside of someone else – or if you’ve just not braked in time. The 308 is also furnished with an ‘Emergency Collision Braking System’. This is a clever bit of gadgetry where, in the event of a possible crash, automatic braking is triggered to prevent the impact or reduce the consequences. What’s more, the five door car offers great fuel economy, without compromising too much on

space. There’s plenty of room for luggage and shopping, as well as for you and your front seat passenger. Rear-seat travellers don’t have quite so much legroom, but headroom is fine and rest of the car is cosseting enough to provide a soothing ride. The new 308 is seriously worth considering if you’re after a medium sized family motor. The fact that the model will also be manufactured and sold in China indicates just how much belief there is in this car.

NOVEMBER FIFTH Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets It was a cold winter’s night, There was frost on the ground, The sky was pitch black, Not a thing made a sound. The fire crackled peacefully, Burt stretched on the rug, E thel yawned happily, Both creatures were snug,

REMEMBER REMEMBER

YOUR PETS THIS NOVEMBER!

Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

H

ere at Battleflatts Veterinary clinic we have been advising our clients on how they can help their pets cope during the firework season. A fear of fireworks is a very common problem affecting 80% of pets. They have very acute hearing so can find the loud bangs and crackles very distressing. Signs of stress include trembling, clinginess, cowering, hiding, shaking and vocalisation. It is always advisable to seek help from professional people (vet/animal behaviourist) as soon as any of these signs are seen, as left untreated, mild firework fear can become serious noise phobia.

Our top tips for the firework season: • Walk your dog earlier in the day before fireworks start • Keep your pets inside - remember fireworks can start unexpectedly • Ensure your pet has some form of Identification (microchip and or Tag) just in case they escape • Ignore any fearful behaviour exhibited from your pets. Keep calm and carry on as normal.

Your pet will pick up on your anxious vibes! • Close windows and doors, block off cat flaps and close the curtains. Turn up the TV or radio to help block out the sound of fireworks • Try not to leave your pets alone when fireworks are going off • Provide a den or hiding place for your pet, don’t make a fuss of your pet especially if they appear stressed • And most importantly DO NOT punish your pet! This will make the problem worse Not forgetting our small animals: • Where possible bring hutches and enclosures indoors to somewhere quiet or turn the hutch to face the wall. • Provide additional bedding for pets to burrow in • Cover any hutches/aviaries with a thick blanket to block out flashes and sounds. Ensure plenty of ventilation. After the firework season is over is the best time to tackle curing the phobia. Behaviour therapy works extremely well but is very time consuming and requires a committed owner. If you have any questions or concerns then any of the vets or nurses will be happy to help you. You can ring us at Stamford Bridge on 01759 371066 or Strensall on 01904 490055 or Pocklington on 01759 307500 or Norton on 01653697299

A STRAY IN A MANGER! Here at Battle Flatts we are once again running our annual Christmas collection for our local animal charities during December. Christmas is one of the busiest times of year for these charities, but unfortunately is also a time when animals tend to be forgotten. We are collecting donations of tinned & dried pet foods, treats & toys. All donations will be gratefully received and can be left under the Christmas Tree in any of our branches. 76 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

bringing back the best sellers, but it was time to grow the Fair from another angle. Expanding the shopping time was the best solution as we hope that by extending over the weekend more people will be able to attend our Fair.”

For the first year all tickets for the Fair can be booked on line at www. nspcccastlehowardchristmasfair. co.uk “Due to the popularity of this Fair we are expanding to include the Saturday which will help us raise more funds for such an important and worthwhile cause,” says Harriette Murray Wells, the new joint chairman of the NSPCC Castle Howard Christmas Fair Committee which organises the big event. “We asked ourselves – how do we make more than the £40,000 we made for the NSPCC last year? Each year, we invite new high quality stalls, as well as

The NSPCC Christmas Fair is set in the stunning surroundings of Castle Howard with the kind support of the Howard family. Described as the ‘best charity fair in the country’ by previous visitors, it will have 65 stalls on offer this year. Sellers are carefully vetted each year to offer the best range of goods to cover all shoppers’ needs, tastes and price ranges with 35 new stalls added for 2014. Products sold range from toys to books, jewellery, gardening, men’s and ladies clothes, kitchen and homeware to food and drink. Funds raised by the Fair help provide NSPCC services for children and families in the North Yorkshire region, as well as across the UK. “We’re delighted to work with the NSPCC again and to announce that the Fair will run over a third day,” says The Hon. Simon Howard. “We look forward to welcoming a family crowd on the Saturday. For the first time we will open the playground and Lakeside cafe alongside the house, gardens and The Courtyard.” The event attracts some fantastic sponsors from the local area as well as further afield. Main sponsors this year include The Rowse Family Trust, JM Finn & Co Investment Management, TATE Residential, Rodgers of York, The Feathers hotel in Helmsley and The Orangery Settrington.

“This is an opportunity for new players to join us in playing some of the most popular classical music in concerts over the next year,” said Shaun Matthew, conductor of the orchestra for the past nine years. Puzzle Answers

“We often have places for string November players and at the moment we 2014 are keen to recruit one or two Crossword trumpet players, a bassoonist and an oboist. We also sometimes need extra players who could help out when we perform large-scale works,” said Shaun.
