elcome to our November edition.

I’d love to say that the monthly production of the Handy Mags is a serene event, but no. With one week to go before our print deadline, Nicky and I usually descend into (organised) chaos trying to fit everything in and make sure everything is correct. Phil, our designer, usually works from home but in deadline week he can be found in our back office trying to squeeze every last drop of space for all of those adverts and local event listings. Our new office neighbours say they can hear us laughing (and berating I’m sure)! But every month (touch wood) the magazines come together; and every month we say that for the next issue we will be the epitome of cool! Sometimes I dream of pottering at home, rearranging the furniture, feet-up, house clean and tidy, worrying about what’s for tea. But I absolutely love the busy-ness. We talk to so many different people from tradesmen to local groups, like the many walking groups and fair commitees, to larger businesses, councils, retailers and, of course, readers. Working at the Handy Mag, Nicky and I get to meet all sorts, and it is kind of special that we do. This month, as usual, we’ve included a list of the Remembrance events in your area. There are also lots of notices for festive fairs and shows so make sure you have a read through and do support your local events. If you have a business in the area, why not give the Handy Mags a try for your local advertising. I know I’m biased but we work really hard to blend local information and articles with advertising, to produce a magazine that most people like, keep, read and, most importantly use! Until next month…

toneclenz can help - a local family run business who use the latest equipment to deep clean, enhance, restore and protect a huge range of surfaces. From a travertine floor to an exterior stone wall, Stoneclenz offer a full restoration process. Their fully trained and qualified team deliver the most impressive results possible, bringing new life back into your home. INSIDE YOUR HOME: Are your stone, tiled or synthetic floors looking dirty, tired or worn out? All floors lose their lustre over a period of time. You may have tried to clean your floors yourself and have been disappointed with the results, and now feel that you have no alternative but to renew them which is a bit drastic and probably very expensive! Stoneclenz’s specialised cleaning equipment removes the dirt, grime and bacteria which defaces your flooring, leaving your floors clean and safe. Once cleaned they can seal, or hone and polish your floor to a beautiful shine.

OUTSIDE YOUR HOME: Stoneclenz’s steam-based stone cleaning system removes moss, algae, fungi and other biological matter, revealing the often surprising beauty and colour of your stonework and masonry, paths and driveways, long hidden under many years of air-borne pollution. Suitable for all kinds of external surfaces including masonry, brickwork, block paving, Yorkshire stone, and all types of concrete products. They also clean stone fireplaces and mullion windows. The team at Stoneclenz guarantee to deliver the best solution at the right cost, and they offer FREE DEMONSTRATIONS so call them today on Freephone 0800 170 7660 or email stoneclenz@aol.com www.stoneclenz.com

On the 2nd of December last year the AA attended an average of 1150 breakdowns every hour! The cold and icy conditions mean it’s not just you that needs an extra layer or two of protection. To ensure you and your family stay safe on the roads this winter we’ve designed our Winter Safety Check to provide that extra protection. And because we feel that everyone should stay safe this winter we’ve decided to make it completely free.

CONTACT SPORTS

ELECTRIC GARAGE DOORS

BY MARY MAHON

With summer now faded far into the distance, a lot of summertime pleasures become passing memories – swim suits, sunglasses and sun cream are put away to gather cobwebs for another year. In 2016 in particular, we also say goodbye to the Olympics for the next four years. The 17 days of ephemeral joy was incredibly diverse; it allowed people all over the world to enjoy a range of sports, from track to archery to boxing. However, although all sports are enjoyed and respected in the Olympics, in reality, some sports are sometimes stigmatised… Contact sports such as boxing, rugby and even football are often criticised and given a bad reputation of inciting violence, racism and physical injuries, causing various organisations and petitioners to try and ban such sports. Unfortunately, this does not come without reason. Aggression on pitch or outside of a ring is not unheard of, which often becomes worse when it is hyped up by the media. Also, accidents occasionally do happen that can lead to minor or critical hospitalisation, giving people very good reasons to be cautious or disapproving of certain sports. Because of the large levels of debate and controversy surrounding contact sports, over the years many countries have banned them, boxing especially. However, sporting clubs are often positive places that can truly inspire you to become your best possible self. Personally, I’ve found kickboxing to be life-changing! Both teaching it and training has demonstrated to me its life-long influences, both inside and outside of the club. It teaches discipline and respect, self-defence and self-control, determination and a desire to reach your full potential. Rather than the associated aggression and violence with kickboxing, the focus on technique and skill is paramount, making sparring matches and fight nights a contest of skill rather than strength. Sports are an intrinsic part of our world culture, so maybe we should try to keep an open mind towards all sports. Perhaps even give one a go – because as the saying goes “the pain of process is temporary but the feeling of achievement lasts forever”. 12 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

sitting room with the door open”. Anne praised the variety and lightness of the songs sung by the small Malton choir, which is only 20 strong, and said smallness sometimes suited the organisers of local church musical events. She recalled church concerts where catering for choirs of up to 50 singers sometimes posed problems. Malton District Male Voice Choir has helped raise thousands of pounds for local good causes at performances across Ryedale and outside the district since it was founded in 2007 and has also sung at church weddings. This was its first concert for Air Ambulance. On Saturday November 5th the choir is making its third appearance at Bridlington’s East Coast Festival of Choirs and Voices. The Choir then host their own annual concert of Christmas music in St Michael’s Church Malton on Sunday December 11th.

MALTON CHOIR HELPS RAISE £2000 FOR YORKSHIRE AIR AMBULANCE A concert in Sledmere House featuring Malton District Male Voice Choir has raised the stately sum of £2,000 for one of Ryedale’s favourite charities – Yorkshire Air Ambulance. The Malton men joined Yorkshire dialect comedian Adam Collier and the Magic Circle’s Chris Cassels for the charity event in the stately home in east Yorkshire. Under conductor Vivien Wilcock, the choir sang on the Main Hall staircase and then in the magnificent library of Sledmere House. Moira Gray played on the historic Main Hall organ and Library piano. To honour the helicopter crews who fly with Yorkshire Air Ambulance the Malton singers included the popular “Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines” and “Stout-hearted Men” in their programme. Air Ambulance organiser Annie Baron said it was a “wonderful” concert. She reported that Sledmere House owner Sir Tatton Sykes attended part of it and that his family listened to the choir “from their 16 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Milton Rooms offers craft, drama, dance and folk The Milton Rooms offers a chance to dance, traditional craft, folk music and new drama in its varied November schedule. The Threads of War group commemorates the First World War in a new textile exhibition open during Armistice week, November 5th-11th, from 10am to 3pm. The show combines traditional techniques and skills, such as quilting, knitting, felting and embroidery in more than 50 works. Each piece represents what the war means to the artist. Entry is free and no ticket is required. Claptrap Productions return for two nights (November 10th & 11th) with Impact, a double-bill of two riveting one-act plays co-written by Tom Needham and Libby Pearson. The stories tell of two deaths and two families. Both tell how lives can be changed in a second, and how an accident becomes a defining moment for a family. York Vintage Dance Group invites you to a taster session to learn fun dances from the 1920s to the 1950s on November 16th.The group specialises in

teaching dance in a social and relaxed atmosphere with an emphasis on having fun while learning. If there is sufficient interest, the Milton Rooms will start a regular group next year. The exciting, young Jaywalkers trio will be playing on November 18th. These BBC Young Folk Award finalists effortlessly fuse elements of bluegrass, folk and old-time into music that is innovative but rooted deeply in tradition. This promises to be an exhilarating, foot-stomping evening complete with guitars, mandolin, fiddle and double bass from the band. There’s another treat in store the following night in the folk club atmosphere of the Studio when two local favourites, the Fine Companions and Malarkey share the bill with their different but complementing styles. Tickets are available from the box office in Malton or by telephone 01653 696240.

A CUSTOMER’S EXPERIENCE ENJOY YOUR GARDEN IN COMFORT AND STYLE

W

ell, what now I thought to myself, I’ve been retired a year and am enjoying all my hobbies - golfing, walking, bowling and my beloved garden. I wanted to take in the beauty of my garden on a hot summers evening or even on a cold winter’s day, but it was impossible. Why? My conservatory! We added it to our property 20 years ago, we’d originally used it for occasional dining but it was swiftly turned into a great room for coats and shoes and storage, it not only obstructed the view of the garden, but was too hot in the summer and cold in the winter!

cold conservatory into a 365! My term for the number of days I would be able to use my room.

The Big Day:

We, like many people, were excited but also a little worried by the upheaval. I had no need to worry at all. The team turned up on time, were brilliant, polite and worked so hard. It took 5 days, lots of tea and a couple of visits from the building inspector (an essential part). The end result is spectacular. And the reason for my conversion, my pride and joy, can be viewed from a ‘garden’ room come rain, wind, sun or snow.

The Visit:

Chris arrived from Wetheralds and I knew straight away I’d found the right company to deliver the new room I was hoping for. He explained the process from start to finish, the guarantees and the options to personalise my new roof. I explained my reasons for wanting a solid insulated roof, which took a good hour!

The Quote:

There it was, the quote, all complete and left for me to consider, the construction format was what I wanted and I knew there was no way the cost would be anything like a rebuild. It had to be Wetheralds, they gave me the push I needed to convert my miserable 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

elmsley is to host a brand new event this Christmas – and it promises to be a heavenly one.

The Angel Festival will launch on 3rd December, to coincide with Small Business Saturday, and run until the 12th Night. 30 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Inside and out, the town will be taken over by a host of angels of all shapes and sizes with businesses, residents and local organisations all getting involved. Helmsley in Business, the organisation behind the event, ran Willow Angel Workshops in September to help people create angelic masterpieces, but others will be making angels out of anything from flowers and cakes to lights and performance art. The festival will also involve a family friendly hunt for one missing angel, who likes to play hide and seek. People finding Rory the Angel in his various hiding places around town will be encouraged to pose for a

Helmsley will also continue its longstanding support of Small Business Saturday, the grassroots campaign which encourages people to support local businesses. The town will be hosting a day of activities, special offers and competitions on 3rd December, treating residents and locals to a bit of fun, as well as helping them to do a spot of Christmas shopping. Castle Howard adds spice to Christmas with enormous Gingerbread replica 19 November – 23 December 2016 of the house in a superbly opulent style. Gardener Adele Hirst has been charged with collecting sufficient foliage from the grounds to bring the gardens into the house, so visitors can expect elaborate swags, wreaths and garlands made from the evergreen shrubs and trees, that provide the grounds with year-round colour, decorated with fruit and berries.

A

Following tradition, perhaps the most ornately decorated tree in the county will be displayed in the Great Hall – a 22ft spruce covered with thousands of lights and baubles – where roaring fires will be lit every day during the run up to Christmas to fill the room with the scent of pine and open fires.

When complete, the enormous confection will be four metres by three metres, and depict not only the famous house, complete with its dome and the parterre garden envisaged by Vanbrugh, but also by many of the architectural features found in the 10,000 acre estate, including the Temple of the Four Winds, Mausoleum and the 7th Earl’s monument. The windows of the house will be illuminated, and just like at the real Castle Howard, a fine mist will descend from Ray Wood to create a perfect winter scene.

“Castle Howard is well-known for offering one of the best Christmas experiences in the country, so this year, we’ll be opening slightly earlier – Saturday 19 November - so that all the visitors that come for inspiration for their own Christmas designs can enjoy the decorations at a slightly quieter time – allowing them to linger and take more photographs and notes to help create their own displays,” adds marketing manager, Rachel Underwood. “The family Christmas really kicks off on Saturday 26 November, with the first of our Audience with Father Christmas sessions. After exploring the gardens and the decorated house, this is the perfect way to start the festivities in incredible style!”

huge architectural gingerbread model of Castle Howard is set to take pride of place at the heart of the stately home’s festive celebrations this year, when London-based biscuiteers, Bompas & Parr, recreate Vanbrugh’s original design for the grand estate from gingerbread and icing.

“Bompas & Parr have a global reputation for creating spectacular confections, from a jelly version of the London skyline to a gingerbread version of London’s lost architecture, which featured in the Christmas window of Selfridges in London. This model of Castle Howard will perhaps be the most detailed and most elaborate house that they have constructed, and we’re delighted that visitors are going to be able to enjoy this amazing creation as part of our Christmas programme,” comments the Hon Nicholas Howard, who commissioned the design.

Throughout the season, visitors to Castle Howard will enjoy daily live music from choirs, classical musicians and other musical guests, and younger visitors can enjoy a festive trail woven throughout the decorated house.

The model will on display from Saturday 19 November until Friday 23 December.

Visitors are advised to book early for sessions with Father Christmas, and the Christmas Afternoon Teas, as availability is limited and they are expected to book up quickly. A special evening on Sunday 18 December will also enable visitors to explore the house at twilight, with last entry at 7.00pm.

Whilst the biscuiteers will be working on the model, the rest of the Castle Howard team will be working like Santa’s busiest elves to decorate the public areas

Castle Howard is open daily from 19 November to 23 December from 10.00am (last entry to the House 4pm, 5pm at weekends) with admission prices of £18.95 for adults with concessions available. Under 4s get in free, and family tickets (two adults and up to three children) are available for £47.85.

Nigel Harrison, head woodsman, commented: “It takes a surprising amount of time to cultivate your perfect Christmas tree, every foot can take up to a year to grow – and there is a lot of pruning to get the right shape. We like to think that our local trees have a little more personality than your average tree!” “The trees at our farms are from a renewable resource. When a tree is harvested, another is planted in its place, ensuring the production of our trees is entirely sustainable. Unlike their artificial non bio-degradable counterparts, real Christmas trees can be recycled and turned into useful mulch or compost.”

NEW COMMUNITY GARDENING CLUB: COME AND JOIN US

T

he Heritage Learning Centre at Scampston Walled Garden is opening their bothy gardens as part of a community gardening scheme to promote healthier lifestyles. The Community Gardening Club has been formed thanks to a grant from North Yorkshire County Council Stronger Communities Fund. The club will initially operate two mornings per week and funding has been sourced to support travel costs for Ryedale based residents (Pickering and Malton areas) who want to get involved, together with additional resources for one year. Gill Garbutt OBE, a director of the Heritage Learning Centre at Scampston commented ‘ this project is aimed at those who enjoy gardening and wish to

helping people to keep active and share learning.’

share their skills as well as those who will benefit from the wider social aspects of the club. We are extremely grateful to NYCC Stronger Communities and are pleased to be able to contribute to the Community Wellbeing Agenda,

Bookings now being taken for Christmas parties, shooting dinners and parties

The bothy gardens have several raised vegetable plots and the idea of the club is to grow fresh produce to share. The community aspect of the club, in this relaxing friendly environment , is ideal for those who live alone, those who have maybe moved into sheltered housing with no gardens and those who simply want to make new friends. There is no age limit for adults taking part. All we ask is that people contact us to find out more’. We are very interested to hear from people who want to get involved practically and those who might want to support others. Please ring 01944 758 646 to find out more.

BE IMMERSED IN THE MAGIC OF A HANDMADE CHRISTMAS AT BURTON AGNES HALL At its Christmas opening, Burton Agnes Hall simply oozes festive cheer. Simon and Olivia Cunliffe-Lister, with the keen help of their children, decorate each room of their home to create a magical wonderland with traditional and contemporary handmade decorations. This year visitors can look forward to seeing a bountifully decked Christmas tree from the estate’s forest, and as usual the decorations are predominantly handcrafted, often using natural garden produce. Simon Cunliffe-Lister says: “My family and I all love dreaming up unusual Christmas decorations using the abundance of natural treasures around us. We seek inspiration from our gardens and grounds, which provide a rich array of plants, flowers and seed heads, and also the magnificent Yorkshire Wolds on our doorstep.” Whilst visiting the Hall, young visitors are encouraged to follow the children’s trail and find

homemade felt snowman dolls hidden in each room. Children are invited to visit Father Christmas by the fireside each Sunday in December that the Hall is open, between 12-4pm, at which each child will receive a special Christmas gift. As dusk falls, the grounds are illuminated with twinkling lights spotted across the topiary bushes and the roaring fire in the Great Hall glows warmly. Visitors can take their newfound Christmas inspiration to the courtyard, perhaps to enjoy a festive treat in the cafe and to visit our Christmas Shop. This is a whole shop dedicated to Christmas, for visitors to recreate the Burton Agnes Christmas magic at home. For those seeking a Christmas gift or two, the three shops will be newly stocked with a vast range of festive gifts, perfect for under the tree. money I’ve earned to create a valuable nest egg, is it fair that when I die, a great chunk of that is taken and dished out to people who’ve been dicking about all their lives?

I

had a heated debate the other day – one of many I have on an alarmingly regular basis – with an acquaintance who was trying to get me to see that Inheritance Tax (IHT) is fine and that I ought to stop bleating on about it and accept it as just one of those things you have to live with. It stops the rich from getting richer and redistributes wealth, he said. Which it does. But is that fair? If I’ve worked 12 hours a day 7 days a week, bought a nice house and wisely invested the

Britain has the highest death duties of any of the world’s major economies. In the UK, if you’re worth more than £325,000 you’ll cop for this tax. In the States you don’t pay unless you’re worth more than $3 million. The average IHT take of the BRIC nations (Brazil, Russia, India, China) is just 1%. Several developed economies including Australia, Israel and New Zealand have scrapped death duties altogether. Yet Britain remains stubbornly stealing almost half of your money when you die. If you want your family and not the taxman to benefit when you die you need to take action now. unning alongside Selbys’ Antiques & Fine Art at the Stables in Thornton Le Dale, Imago Interiors have opened a new gallery and showroom. Ray Selby already has an established venue for antiques & fine art and is building on his success. He has now opened the new business ‘Imago Interiors’ at The Stables after seeing a shortfall in the market place for combining contemporary & antique interior furnishings. Ray and the team have introduced a large range of interiors including classic English and French seating and a collection of quality country oak and pine farmhouse furniture.

The new range also includes eye catching unique bespoke, handmade Fairtrade furniture which has been hand crafted and incorporates amazing antique carvings in the design, adding to the uniqueness of the furniture. Ray says “We wanted to create something unique and this range links the two businesses, combining antiques together with the unique and contemporary – proving a one stop shop for customers to find that unique piece for their home” Imago Interiors will be introducing a range of lighting and soft furnishings, and a selection of carpets ranging from the traditional English carpet, to contemporary

and antique Kalims and Afghan Rugs. Imago Interiors can also provide a complete upholstery service. The shop will also be stocking an exciting selection of ready to go off the roll fabrics for customers to choose from for their own individual project but will also stock a selection of furniture ready for upholstering. “We work with an excellent established upholsterer who can cover the furniture in a fabric of your choice – or provide a bespoke service for customer commissions” If you are looking for a one off statement piece to compliment your home, call down and have a look at our current range.”

Who’s my worst enemy?

by Jeff Bentley of TLC Counselling

draining my energy and robbing me of my satisfaction. At times like this I am my worst enemy. When we don’t meet our expectations we commonly use our “shoulds” as the basis for self-attacks. We build up a case against ourselves based on our ideas of what we “should have done” which can stir up feelings of guilt, shame and regret. The “shoulds” we were given as we grew up burrow so deeply into our being that we sometimes can’t take a step without feeling a twinge of fear that we may not be perfectly obeying them.

M

ost of us don’t pay much attention to the continual stream of thinking inside our own mind, but whether we’re aware of it or not, the things we say to ourselves influence the way we act and feel. There are times when I attack myself by putting myself down and sabotaging my own accomplishments. This has the effect of dragging me down emotionally,

Therefore, many of us can use guilt to attack ourselves when we feel we have failed to meet the standards our ‘shoulds’ dictate. This is in the mistaken belief that by attacking ourselves we will improve our behaviour. Attacking ourselves with guilt can become so familiar in our pattern of self talk that we don’t even realise we’re doing it and the truth is that guilt is a poor agent of change. Guilt ties us in knots and keeps us trapped in

RYEDALE • NOVEMBER 2016 • ISSUE 126 the very pattern from which we are trying to escape. Our self-talk can routinely include demoralising statements such as, “I’m no good.” “I’m useless.” “I’m ugly.” “No one likes me.” Such sweeping attacks take their toll on our self esteem which can create a sense of being unworthy and that everything about us is wrong. The good news is that while our deep habits have built up over years they need not remain with us forever. With help, I believe we can all learn to dispute our own thoughts, particularly those about ourselves and provide an opportunity to improve our self talk. For example, if we identify and acknowledge our virtues, we can start to say kind things about us to ourselves. Once we have accepted this reality we can begin to unravel some of our habits of self put-down and develop those aspects of ourselves that we enjoy and about which we can be rightly proud. With help, I believe, it is possible to become our own ‘best friend.’

Providing experienced Chiropractic care for you and your family One of Ryedale Lions’ longest-serving members has made a special visit to the Pickering Pre-school Playgroup to present a donation - half a century after his late wife helped set it up. Geoff Otterburn from Pickering, handed over a cheque for £220 from the Lions to the Pickering Pre-school in Hallgarth to provide new facilities for the children including painting easels and sandtray supports. On hand to welcome him and Ryedale Lions President, David Warin, was Cait Faulkner, the Pre-school’s Chair and some of the group’s 30 young members keen to show off their new equipment. Among them was three-year old Teagan Whitehouse who set to with paintbrush to produce an impressive group portrait of the occasion. “We rely heavily on voluntary donations and this money has helped provide much-needed modern easels that can now also be used as whiteboards for mark-making as well as for magnetic shapes and letters. Thanks to the new legs for the sandtray, our smaller children who had difficulty in reaching over will now be able to join in the fun,” said Cait. “It’s a real pleasure to see so many happy little faces,” said Geoff. “I only wish my late wife Sheila could be here to see what wonderful work this place is still doing 50 years after she helped start it up.”

Christmas Fair at Duncombe Park, Helmsley

Tickets are now on sale for Yorkshire’s most exclusive shopping event. The Christmas Fair, in aid of the NSPCC, starts with a glamorous preview evening on Thursday 17th November and continues during the day on Friday 18th and Saturday 19th November. Duncombe Park is not normally open to the public and gives shoppers the unique opportunity to not only start their Christmas shopping but also to explore the Duncombe family’s beautiful and impressive stately home. Following the enormous success of 2015 when the NSPCC raised £58,750 the Fair will again benefit from an extra day’s opening to attract the Saturday shoppers. Tickets for the VIP preview evening are available at £15 and include entry to the champagne reception with a free glass of Perrier Jouet champagne and canapés generously provided by the Feversham Arms Hotel in Helmsley. Numbers are limited for this ‘party and shopping’ experience so advance booking is essential. Daytime tickets cost just £8 if ordered via the website or can be bought on the door for £10. Tickets include free transport to and from Helmsley car parks or from designated parking areas in the Duncombe Park grounds. RYEDALE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH ASSOCIATION RECOMMENDS REGISTERING FOR THE NORTH YORKSHIRE COMMUNITY MESSAGING SERVICE The service is a free community messaging system for North Yorkshire that allows people to register to receive the latest crime notifications and community news happening in their local neighbourhood. Funded by North Yorkshire Police (NYP) and introduced in conjunction with North Yorkshire Neighbourhood Watch Association, the new North Yorkshire Community Messaging service was launched in April 2016. The introduction of this new messaging service was brought about following the publication of the Neighbourhood Policing Review of 2015 which recommended that a community messaging system be purchased by NYP that utilised the best in modern technology to make communications between police and the public - including Neighbourhood Watch - more intuitive, relevant and accessible to all. The service is a free community messaging system for North Yorkshire that allows people to register to receive the latest crime notifications and community news happening in their local neighbourhood. It allows subscribers to decide when 70 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

and how they are kept informed about the issues that matter to them – subject options include Crime (trends, bogus callers, scams, sneak-in burglaries, crime prevention) and Other Police Incidents, Rural Policing, AntiSocial Behaviour, Road Safety, Neighbourhood News and Events. Subscribers can choose how to receive Alerts – by phone, e-mail or text message – and a mobile app is being launched soon. There are options regarding which area is of interest to the subscriber - from schools, to your home, to places of work and elderly relatives. Since the April launch date, some 800 Alerts have been sent out to the wider public, businesses, NHW Schemes and Rural Watch Groups across North Yorkshire. Registering for North Yorkshire

Community Messaging is safe, secure and easy. You can sign up on-line at www.nycm.co.uk or obtain a form from your local Police Community Support Officer. Privacy is assured under the Data Protection Act and will never be shared with commercial organisations, and you are able to update or remove your profile at any time. Nearly 16,000 members of the public have already signed-up – so why not YOU? NHW Coordinators and Rural Watch Members are registered automatically for this new North Yorkshire Community Messaging service but I strongly recommend that everyone else takes 2-3 minutes to visit www. nycm.co.uk in order to register themselves in order to take advantage of this great new free community communications service.

FRIENDS OF MALTON MUSEUM LECTURE Wednesday, 16th November

‘THE PICKERING CHURCH WALL PAINTINGS PROJECT RELAUNCH AND FURTHER FINDINGS’ By Dr Kate Giles (Acting Associate Dean, Faculty of Arts and Humanities. University of York) Acting Director, Humanities Research Centre Dr Kate Giles will speak about the fascinating story of the discovery, restoration and conservation of Pickering’s medieval wall paintings. In 1852 a remarkable series of medieval wall paintings were brought to light during the restoration of Pickering parish church. Although the paintings excited considerable attention from contemporary parishioners, visitors and

Antiquarians, they were not so popular with the Vicar, the Rev. John Ponsonby, who ordered their destruction! Over twenty years later another incumbent, the Rev. G.H. Lightfoot reuncovered the paintings, and restored them with the help of the artist Mr Edward Holmes Jewitt. The paintings have attracted the attention of the leading experts in wall painting conservation and are currently the subject of a major study and funding application to the HLF, led by the current Vicar, Fr. Antony Pritchett. Dr Giles will share her current research with us and explain what the project hopes to achieve.

Venue: The Library, East Wing, Malton School, Middlecave Road, Malton. Time: 7.30pm. Visitors are welcome, admission £3.00. Friends of the Museum - free of charge.

A GOOD READ By Willow Coby

Fortune’s Rocks by Anita Shreve

Ballet Shoes by Noel Streatfeild

It is the summer of the final year of the nineteenth century in the New Hampshire town of Fortune’s Rocks on the east coast of America. Women are expected to behave in a certain way and young Olympia Biddeford is no different. An impressionable 15 year old she is about to discover what it means to grow up. She meets John Haskall, a physician and friend of her father. Despite the fact that he is married and 26 years her senior, Olympia falls madly in love with him.

“I wonder, if other girls had to be one of us, which of us they’d choose to be?”

Finding herself pregnant Olympia must carve out a new place in society as she finds herself ostracised by those around her. Late Victorian society does not take kindly to her behaviour and there are elements of a feminist struggle as she forges a new life. The prose is eloquent and the descriptions of Olympia’s life and environment are spell binding. Shreve went on to write two more novels set in this town, ‘Sea Glass’ and ‘The Pilot’s Wife’: each dealing with unique struggles of women over the course of the twentieth century. But it is here, with Olympia, that the story of the converted convent in Fortune’s Rocks really begins...

The three Fossil sisters are growing up in London. They aren’t really sisters, but adopted by ‘Gum’, a paleontolgist. Each one is a treasure he brought home from his travels. And each is very different. When Gum disappears on one of his expeditions money gets tight and the family take in lodgers. One of them, a dancer, spots a talent for dance in Posy, the youngest, and before they know it, all three girls are enrolled in The Children’s Academy of Dance and Stage Training. What ensues is a glimpse into life on the stage in 1930s London. Since it was first published in 1936 generations of children have indeed considered which of the girls they would like to be. Is it Pauline, who discovers a talent for acting? Or Petrova who would much rather be fixing car engines than performing on stage. Or Posy, the budding ballerina? This children’s classic, though a bit dated in its language and style, never fails to entrance readers and no doubt will continue to do so for years to come.

A day’s end in early November

By The Pastoral Poet

Heavy have become the tired eyes of day, Though becalmed by this restful hour of ease. Harsh forms become smoothed by Dusk’s interplay, As mist enshrouds the serried ranks of trees. Forms; that in daylight seemed garish and crude, Their flaws unmasked by unforgiving sunlight. Yet now, appearing softer and subdued, Transformed by the velvet touch of twilight. From within the hush of a pearly mist, A robin delivered his benediction. As Dusk’s soft veil cloaked all in amethyst, I saluted Daytime’s valediction. Clive Milson

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley

areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Sarah Maultby and Michelle Petyt, who work with the Collection, will talk about the history of gingerbread and have samples of historic recipes for visitors to try in the Milton Rooms on Saturday 12th November.

Sarah said, “Gingerbread has a fascinating history - early recipes from the 1600s were based on ground almonds or breadcrumbs with spices like liquorice, aniseed, ginger and cinnamon. These were moulded and baked like biscuits. Gingerbread made with flour and treacle and baked like a cake evolved during the 1800s. Early gingerbread had a medicinal origin to aid digestion then gradually altered as ingredients and tastes changed into the cake we recognise today”. The Woodhams-Stone Collection is also looking for new trustees to join the board, particularly people who are interested in running events or who have accountancy skills. YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE

Hedges

By Rachael Leverton

Garden boundaries are emotive subjects. There have been any number of feuds between neighbours over this very issue down the years and the main cause of aggro seems to be the humble hedge. Actually, in spite of the improvements in fancy fencing panels over the years, there really is nothing nicer than a well kept hedge. Suburban hedgerows not only soften an otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and cities.

Hedges provide shelter, privacy and - if chosen for fruit and flowers - food. Even the much maligned Leyland cypress has a part to play. It can provide a brilliant buffer against traffic noise for a start, and will screen unsightly views very quickly. Unfortunately it can easily become an out-of-control monster if left unchecked. Some have reached 36m/120ft! The trick with Leylandii is to remove their tops about 1m/3ft before they reach the desired height then clip them twice a year: once in April, once in September.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE This keeps them looking very smart but makes them rather high-maintenance hedges. Fortunately there are many slower growing hedging plants which don’t require such intensive care. On the whole, it’s best to choose a hedge which is in keeping with the style of your house and the area in which you live. So smart Victorian terraces look great fronted by evergreen privet or box while rural properties might consider a more natural hedge of holly, hawthorn, beech, rowan and blackthorn. While not entirely evergreen, a mixed hedge like this will provide beautiful autumn colour and plentiful food for wildlife.

Suburban hedgerows not only soften an otherwise built-up landscape, they provide a lifeline for the wildlife which lives in towns and cities.

I’ve seen gorgeous fuchsia hedges on my trips to the south coast, while slow-growing Yew is attractive and works well on poor, chalky soils. Euonymus does well even in polluted areas or coastal regions plagued by salt winds.

Decide on the planting line and dig out a trench about 12 inches/30cm deep. Fill the base with well-rotted manure or compost then replace the soil, adding in more organic matter as you go. Make sure you mulch around the young plants to help suppress weeds and retain moisture.

November is a great time to plant a new hedge. No matter which type you choose, the secret of success lies in the soil preparation. Dig over the ground thoroughly and don’t skimp on the organic matter.

You can trim the hedge even when it is young. It encourages stronger growth and a denser hedge structure. Plus a well maintained hedge will ensure that you and your neighbours stay on good terms for years to come.

tape Silver Band were very busy throughout the summer seasons of the 1960’s at local agricultural shows & garden fetes, but found themselves with very little to do in winter.

It was suggested that the band perform a concert for charity in Pickering. Yorkshire Cancer was suggested by one of the Bass players, Mr Herbert Breckon, who also organised the 1st concert in Potter Hill Methodist Chapel in December 1967. As it was a success the band decided to make this an annual event. Mr. Breckon continued to organise the concerts, finding comperes, various vocal soloists

The family link continues to this day with Herbert Breckon’s son Michael who is conductor of the band, & with Michael’s wife and 2 daughters who also play in the band. There was a change of venue to the Congregational Church towards the late 70’s (due to alterations at P H) where one concert was cancelled due to snow, but it was held a few days later, between Christmas & New Year. The band its self took on the organisation of further concerts, holding them in Pickering Memorial Hall until that was also refurbished around 2000. Since then the concerts have been held

arrangements of Christmas tunes old & new.

We have had wonderful support from the local community, choirs, soloists & instrumentalists in their role as guest artists at our concerts. One particular group of singers that stand out over the years was a barber’s shop group from further afield in the West Riding. We thank them all very much for their contributions over the years.

This year the 50th anniversary concert will be held on Sunday 18th December at 2pm in the Parish Church. The guest artist is local singer & songwriter David Swann, who is well known across the region for his entertaining & original repertoire.

Initially consisting of religious music the band had at the time, sprinkled with carols, a couple of marches & one or two popular brass band pieces the musical content in the band’s programs has changed substantially over the years. Today as well as traditional brass band music & solos we feature arrangements of classical music, TV & film music as well as traditional & modern

Yorkshire Cancer Research will have their chief executive officer Mr Charles Rowett there to briefly outline the work of their charity. There will be tea / coffee and refreshments available and the cost of entry for adults is £5. Pepsi is a little shy when she meets new people but soon comes round and is very affectionate and loving. She came in with a flea allergy so has some hair loss on her back and legs, she is receiving treatment for this and is improving daily. Pepsi really enjoys her walks so an active home is a must. Pepsi isn’t used to being left alone, so would need a home where she will have company for most of the day. Riley is such a sweet and friendly boy with an outgoing nature. Although he is quite big he walks well on a halti and is quick to learn. He would be best with children of secondary school age as he may knock younger ones over! He is very active so a home where he will get lots of long walks is ideal for him. He seems very sociable with other dogs and could possibly live with a calm female dog.

How can I tell if my pet is the ideal weight? By Ellie Kift SVN, Station House Vets Knowing whether or not your dog or cat’s weight is ‘ideal’ can be difficult sometimes, especially as we see our pets every day. Canine and feline obesity is a growing problem. Did you know that pets which are as little as 20% overweight are at risk of diabetes, arthritis and heart disease? Enough doom and gloom, there are some easy steps to take. The first step is to identify your pet’s ideal weight. Once that has been established you can devise a weight loss plan. If your pet’s ribs are easily felt with no fat cover then it is 20% below the ideal body weight. If the bones are raised with minimal tissue between the skin and bone then it is 10% below ideal body weight. The ideal body weight is when the ribs can be felt through a slight cover of fat, and a waist is visible from above. If it is difficult to feel the ribs through moderate fat cover, with a slightly sagging abdominal fat pad seen in cats, then it is roughly 10% over ideal body weight. But if your pet’s ribs are difficult to feel under thick fat layer, with a cat having a prominent hanging abdominal fat pad, then your pet is 20% above ideal body weight. Although it can be daunting, there are easy and fun steps to getting your pet into shape. Changing to a weight loss food can help significantly. Here at Station House Vets we advise the Hills metabolic food which has been clinically proven to provide 28% body fat loss safely in dogs and cats in two months. It works with each pet’s unique energy expenditure, activating the body’s natural ability to burn excess body fat. It is important to ensure that you measure out the required amount for your pet according to the feeding guidelines, and a common mistake is to leave food available at all times. It is best to restrict mealtime to 10-15 minutes, and to try to feed at the same time every day. Another tip is to feed your pet before having your own meal, to lessen their tendency to beg, and

ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE even to keep your pet in another room whist you are preparing and eating your own meals. Get active with your dog, take extra walks in addition to regular walks, and take your dog out with you whenever possible. Walking on different surfaces, such as sand or shallow water provides extra resistance and enhances fitness. Consider taking your dog to hydrotherapy. Make food fun! Slowing your pet’s eating times can increase their feeling of fullness. Toys filled with food provide engaging ways for pets to eat, and puzzle feeders slow them down and can utilise their natural foraging habits. There are some brilliant food puzzles for dogs that you can buy, or even make yourself, and for cats there is plenty of choice too; to increase your cat’s activity and mental health just go to foodpuzzlesforcats.com to get some ideas. Here at Station House Vets we offer free nurse weight clinics, where we can check your pet’s weight, and give your pet a weight record card and provide you with all the information you need to get your pet into shape. I hope to see you and your pet soon.
