W
elcome to the October edition…
This month Ryedale Book Festival is at locations around Ryedale with something for everyone whether you are book-obsessed or just an occasional reader. Have a look at the website at www.ryedalebookfestival.com for more information. My family know I love reading (I devour books at great speed) and they bought me a Kindle on my last birthday. One of the things I love about it is that you can increase the size of the font on the page and this means that I can read in bed without glasses on! I do have to turn the page a lot though as I am down to about 5 words on a page - I don’t think this is going to be a long term solution! You can also purchase books very quickly online – they only take about 2 seconds to download – so I can finish one book and be reading another within minutes. One of the main things I don’t like about my Kindle is that you don’t see the cover of the book you’re reading once you start. This means that I don’t remember what I’ve read – or even what I’m reading! And choosing books is difficult because you can’t really see what sort of book it is or how big it is from the little cover images on my Kindle. You really can’t beat spending a Saturday afternoon browsing a shop full of shelves filled with books. I think I might have to put up with wearing my glasses in bed and go back to buying proper paper books again! After a pretty mild winter last year, there are predictions of very cold weather ahead. Stock up on warm coats and make sure your car is well prepared by visiting one of our local garages – you’ll find them in the Handy Mag! Well done to Mrs J Smith of Malton for winning the August competition. Until next month…

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett
The Crow Road
The Enchanted Wood
‘He’s away the crow road.’ So says Prentice McHoan’s grandmother before she takes that path, and sadly, so now is Banks himself. What better way to recognise the enormous contribution he made to modern fiction than to revisit some of his work, and what better place to start than ‘The Crow Road’?
Enid Blyton has been out of favour for many years, but has recently undergone something of a renaissance. A major exhibition of her work has led many to revisit their childhood favourites – and believe me, some of them have stood the test of time remarkably well.
By Iain Banks
For a start, it has one of the best opening lines in modern literature: ‘It was the day my grandmother exploded.’ In the aforementioned Prentice, it has an engaging, honest and endearing hero, and in his family it has a complex, disturbing and fascinating cast of characters. There is drama, humour, mystery and philosophy in equal measure. What’s not to love? The central strand of the story is the disappearance of Prentice’s Uncle Rory – presumed dead by many, but presumed alive by Prentice’s father, Kenneth. Rory’s unfinished papers include the idea of ‘Crow Road’ – a novel? a factual account? Nothing is clear. As Prentice attempts to unravel the thread, Banks moves his own story backwards and forwards in time, switching perspectives and retelling events from different angles. For a novel which is frequently about death, there is an awful lot of humour too – often dark, but equally hilarious. Fans are divided on which of Banks’ novels is his best. It’s a hard choice. How do you choose between say ‘The Wasp Factory’ and ‘Complicity’? Many readers would stake a claim for his science fiction, written as Iain M Banks, and ask you to ‘Consider Phlebas’. I have a great deal of affection for his whisky-logue ‘Raw Spirit’, which is not only well written, but has been responsible for a lot of good drams – cheers Iain. However, whether or not it is his ‘best’, ‘The Crow Road’ is certainly my favourite – and I know I am not alone.

By Enid Blyton
The Enchanted Wood is the first in the Faraway Tree series, in which three children find themselves living close to the most amazing tree you have ever seen. It grows different fruits at different points, depending on how it is feeling. It is inhabited by all manner of strange folk – Silky the fairy, the old Saucepan Man, Dame Washalot and the Angry Pixie. At the top lives Moonface, in a perfectly round little house with a slide that runs right to the bottom of the tree. And best of all, there is a small ladder through the clouds which leads to a different magical land every time... Joe, Beth and Frannie (the names have been modernised from Blyton’s originals) have all manner of adventures there. Sometimes the lands are full of fun – The Land of Birthdays, for example – while others are slightly more threatening – Dame Snap may no longer be Dame Slap, but her school is still somewhere no-one would like to visit! If you remember loving Blyton as a child, then now might be the time to dig out those old copies. A six and four year old I know rather well, are enjoying these stories just as much as I ever did, if not more!

FOOT CARE TIPS FOR WINTER WEATHER
W
inter is on its way. However while people go to great lengths to pamper their feet and get them looking their best in summer, during the winter months, they forget and neglect their feet. Many people simply don’t wear enough on their feet. Most fashion footwear does not provide adequate protection from the cold and when its freezing outside you should be wearing warm socks and warm shoes which have an encased upper and a good sole.
Instead warm your feet slowly before getting into a bath and moisturise them thoroughly afterwards. This will help prevent dry, cracked skin on the heels which is another cold weather problem and one that can lead to infections. Stuart Moore is a fully qualified foot health professional. He can visit you wherever you are in the Ryedale and Scarborough areas, with a surprising array of treatments which can be administered in the comfort of your own home, at excellent rates and a time to suit you.
Keeping your feet warm and well protected is the obvious answer. Don’t walk barefoot around the house. Always wear slippers. Cold feet can be a major cause of sleep disruption so, passion killers or not, wear bed socks.
If your feet get cold the worst thing you can do is put them next to a source of direct heat such as a radiator, in a hot bath or on a hot-water bottle. These will only increase the risk of chilblains.

THE WOLDS CYCLE CHALLENGE – A BEGINNER’S JOURNEY
I
n July 2012, following the 2nd year of the Ryedale Special Families Bike Challenge, one of my friends, who had taken part, joined us for supper. He had completed the 146 mile cycle challenge around the Yorkshire Wolds just before we parked him in front of his supper and a glass of wine. He was truly exhausted but we persuaded him to eat and drink, as he must surely be ravenous and eager to celebrate his success. I admired his achievement and his hard work in fundraising for Ryedale Special Families. I decided that I would consider taking part in the 2013 cycle challenge. Still a year away from the event it was easy to think but not as easy to do. January 2013 arrived and the urge to attempt the challenge was still there. I sent an email asking if anyone would be willing to join my quest. Unsurprisingly most emails read “I have no bike, no time, broken leg.” You name it, there was an excuse. At the 11th hour one of my closest, most unfit friends replied “I am keen, what do I do and when do we start training.” At last I had a training partner and even more fantastic she would be great company throughout our months of training. We met twice a week initially and 3 times a week as the cycle challenge approached. To describe some of our bike rides as horrendous would be an understatement - frost, rain and even blizzards. I booked myself in to an osteopath to help my breathing, knees and locked neck. It helped me so much that following my recommendation my friend Yvonne booked in too. The week prior to July 12th approached and we read our training sheet; we should rest for a week prior to the bike ride how wonderful, a week without a bike ride - oh and lots of pasta! The morning of the bike challenge and the plan was to meet at 7am and enjoy a full English breakfast. The nerves got the better of us and that idea was shelved pretty quickly and at the start we insisted to the organisers that we were the first to

depart. We were a group of six and knew we had a long two days ahead. Not dampening our achievements and I know the mantra is “its not a race” but we were the first group to leave on the Saturday morning BUT the last group to arrive back on the Sunday evening. We never set a time target as we just wanted to complete the 146 miles and all arrive home safely together. The only challenge we set ourselves was to make as much money for Ryedale Special Families as we could. We can only describe our challenge as equally testing and wonderful. We had to dig deep to find the resilience to endure the searing heat (the first Yorkshire heat wave for years). There was a feeling of utter personal achievement as we were greeted by our family and friends at the end. Our friends, family and work contacts had also pledged an amazing amount of money in anticipation of our success and what a relief to know we could hand over nearly £3000 to Ryedale Special Families. My sister Diana is supported by RSF on a weekly basis as her son Ronnie has severe epilepsy and special needs. To describe RSF as a phenomenal charity would be an understatement as they support many families in the local area with similar situations. A 146 mile bike ride will never be as hard as the challenge these families endure on a day to day basis. We found great strength in knowing that during our times of exhaustion we had to keep going as we were cycling for such an amazing charity. One word of advice; make sure your handlebars are secured tightly, unlike my husbands, as his fell off half an hour before the finish! It was a good job he was going uphill at the time and not down! I really hope this (very) condensed story will whet the appetite of anyone who is looking for the perfect fitness regime for 2014. It is the ideal combo, overcoming adversity whilst getting fit, having enormous fun and raising money for a charity that really makes a difference in our area. We all take having saliva for granted, sometimes it can be an annoyance if we produce too much from time to time, however not having enough can cause serious problems for our mouths and general wellbeing. COMMON CAUSES Age related reduction in by Christine Parker production of saliva, BDS (GDC 72136) Taking medication and drugs which can reduce salivary production and flow Systemic conditions such as Sjogrens syndrome which can dry up all the mucous membranes Dry mouth as a result of surgery or radiotherapy to the head and neck. SYMPTOMS You may feel you have insufficient saliva if you have to sip water when eating to allow yourself to chew and swallow more easily, or if you feel as though your tongue is sticking to the roof of your mouth when you wake, however symptoms can be more subtle.

ASSESSMENT Your dentist should be able to rate your level of oral dryness by using a simple visual assessment, the Challacombe scale. TREATMENT Dry mouths can be much more susceptible to tooth decay and gum disease and a preventative programme should be instituted to reduce its impact on your teeth. Saliva contains lubricants and antibodies to help maintain our oral health. Sometimes we can prescribe a saliva substitute to improve patient comfort. Other times medication can be tweaked to reduce its effect on saliva production. Your dentist should tailor a programme of treatment to help you maintain your oral health, changes to medication and systemic causes should be investigated by your medical practitioner.

WHO ELSE WANTS INCREASED WELL BEING AND A BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner Money Savings Expert Martin Lewis says “If you don’t have the time, the inclination or the knowledge to “do it yourself” and are not willing to risk your family’s future by getting it wrong, you might feel better getting some professional guidance.” Why not come along to our FREE seminar, and find out how Pen-Life can help you make sense of your finances.
M
ost people we meet are baffled by their finances. Even those who think they’re sorted. They may have seen an adviser or bank years ago who’s left them high and dry. No wonder folk are brassed off with financial advice. Yet UK Government adviser, Carol Segeant said “We have known for a long time that managing your finances effectively leads to increased well-being and a better quality of life.” Research shows that individuals who do take financial advice: • have better pensions • worry less about financial stories in the press • feel more confident that they have everything in order • which leads to fewer sleepless nights
We’ve been helping clients achieve financial freedom and protect their family’s future for almost 30 years - and many of our clients have been with us from the beginning. ather and son team, Steve and Jodie Calladene, of Yorkshire Home and Property Services, have many years’ experience of looking after people’s homes.
In fact, they look after their customers’ homes almost as well as they look after their own – because that’s the philosophy they bring to work every day. Their services encompass, in Steve’s words, “everything that can be done to a house, from top to bottom.” This means that they can provide the full range of fitted bathrooms and kitchens and joinery such as doors and flooring. But they’ll also happily take care of smaller jobs you might not normally find a builder willing to do, such as clean guttering, fix a doorknob, powerwash a drive and, for their elderly or vulnerable customers, even change a lightbulb. Once, Steve helped a customer stack hay! Yorkshire Home and Property Services has been operating for 20 years and Steve and Jodie are more than happy to travel throughout Ryedale and around Yorkshire. As highly experienced tradesmen with a solid reputation, there is very little Steve and Jodie can’t do – even awkward or impossible problems that may
at first look very worrying can usually be solved by this highly skilled partnership. The most important value Steve lives by when it comes to customer service is behaving with integrity and he genuinely cares about his customers and their homes. He said: “You hear so many horror stories, and sometimes the prices people get charged for jobs are absolutely outrageous. I believe in treating people the way I would expect them to treat me, and with that philosophy I don’t think you can go far wrong. “A lot of my work is repeat business. In fact, most of our customers end up becoming our friends.” For extra peace of mind, Steve guarantees that he’ll never allow a job’s cost to rise above the original quote without speaking to the customer about it first. And if a job comes in at a lower price than first anticipated, that saving is always passed on to the customer.

When it comes to thrills and spills the ŠKODA Rapid isn’t really quite as speedy as its name suggests. The oil-burner under the bonnet of the Czechmade motor powers it from rest to 62mph in 10.6 seconds and upwards to 118mph. It’s fairly slow going, and with only five gears it’s annoyingly easy to crunch the gearstick up into a non-existent sixth cog. As well as the less than prompt performance the Rapid feels skittish at motorway speeds and the steering is too light to inspire confidence. KITCHEN & BEDOOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen
40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had her second kitchen from us,
because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 22 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the

widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result.
Top Tips from a dental professional
Gary then surveys the customer’s home, and project manages the work himself at no extra cost – bringing in and overseeing his own trusted team of electricians, plasterers, plumbers and tilers. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions.
Although a new kitchen is a big investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need

LOST IN A LOST CIVILISATION
I
can barely see before me as the walls appear to snake in and out. I gingerly take each step carefully, unsure of the direction I am walking. All I can hear are footsteps and the sound of our voices as they echo from the high canyon walls. I feel as though I’m stuck in a computer game, looking for the exit but with no vision to see. ‘Are we going the right way?’ I ask but no one seems to know. There are no stars and the night sky barely lights the way. Just hours before, this ancient city of Petra in Jordan was bustling with hoards of tourists and sellers. Now, it is empty except for five Americans and one English girl. I have just taken the last donkey
42 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
ride and the place is deserted. When I entered the ‘Red-Rose City’ five hours ago, little did I know that I would be one of the last people to leave this historical site that day. Petra attracts hoards of visitors each year and is the main attraction in Jordan. Known as the ‘Red Rose’ city, this sandstone carved site is one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Last year marked the 2000th year of rediscovery of this ancient city that once belonged to the Nabataean civilization. It is a place of timeless beauty with a kaleidoscope of colours and royal tombs. The Treasury itself is enough to leave you breathless before climbing the
800 steps to the Monastery that stands 50 metres tall. Night tours are held by candlelight on Mondays and Thursdays but being there at dusk is just as magical in this heritage site. But if the hike around the sites is too much, take a leaf out of my book and take a leisurely donkey ride, only make sure that you actually leave enough time to get out before darkness sets on this vast historical city or you may find yourself as we did - lost within a lost civilization… Entry to Petra isn’t cheap and will cost 50 Jordanian Dinar for a day pass or 55 JD for two days but the proceeds go to the Queen Eilah humanitarian fund and the local Bedouins. If you have the time, explore Little Petra - the more unknown part of the site where you can avoid the crowds. ON YOUR PLOT Benefits of Garlic
Time spent on clearing and preparing your beds now will pay dividends next year. Make the most of the autumn sunshine to get compost dug into bare beds and you’ll have saved yourself hours of work on those chilly Spring days.
JOBS FOR OCTOBER
Make sure plenty of sun can get to your pumpkins in order to get them ripe in time for Halloween. Plant garlic, shallots and Japanese onions. Leaving dead seed heads etc. on your flower borders will provide valuable food and shelter for garden wildlife over winter, as will leaving an undisturbed log or two. Build a rough shelter in a quiet corner and you might get a hedgehog move in! If you get lots of fallen leaves on your plot don’t waste them. Make a bin from chicken wire attached to 4 posts. Fill this with the leaves and they will rot down to give you sweet-smelling black leaf mould in one to two years time.

As the days get shorter and the weather gets cooler the focus on your vegetable plot starts to turn from growing and harvesting, into clearing and tidying. October is a good month for taking stock of how things have gone this year and starting to make plans for what you will grow in the future. Removing spent crops exposes slugs and other such pests to birds and other garden friendly wildlife. It also gives you the chance to look after your soil and assess how the space will be used next. Crop rotation is important so if the space is to remain bare over winter it may be wise to make notes about what grew where this season.

Add matter from your compost heap to newly cleared areas, either digging it in, or leaving a layer on the top where the worms will gradually incorporate it into the deeper soil over winter. If the soil is heavy leaving it bare will enable frosts to help break it up. Our soil is lighter and benefits from being covered over - we use flattened cardboard boxes which protect from the rain and also help keep the weeds at bay. You may think that it’s all too late in the year to be planting, but there are some crops that definitely need to be thought of now, and others that, given an early start now, will benefit next Spring. If you’ve not grown garlic before, then do try it - it’s easy to grow, can help protect other crops from pests, and with just a small amount of space you can grow enough to see you through the whole year! Now is definitely the time to order your garlic bulbs and they can be planted anytime between now and Christmas, but preferably not when the soil is too wet. Rather than planting all the garlic together it may pay to spread it around the plot as the strong smell can be an aid in keeping pests such as the carrot root fly away from other crops.
The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Each garlic bulb should be separated into individual cloves and the cloves are planted with the pointed end uppermost, just below the surface, leaving about 4 inches between each one. They like well drained soil and you’ll be pleasantly surprised in the long winter days to see their green tips creeping upwards. Each clove matures into a whole new bulb. The traditional time for harvesting garlic is in June, on the longest day of the year and if properly dried and stored it will keep right through the winter. Would you like some fresh, tender, young, peas early in the Spring next year? Look out for hardy varieties that can be planted now. They can be overwintered and are able to withstand the frosts, though protection with a cloche will be appreciated. We will be starting ours in pots to keep in the polytunnel over winter ready for early planting next season.

He puts this down to the quality and value of his service. John’s van is equipped with a high-tech ‘Reach and Wash’ system which uses innovative technology to heat the water on site to 70°C, purifying it as it goes, which means you’re guaranteed a gleaming, streak-free finish without harming the environment. What’s more, dormer windows, conservatory roofs and skylights in awkward places are no problem for John, as the equipment he uses makes short
work of even the hardest-to-reach windows. In the last year John has completed various projects, in addition to commercial and domestic window cleaning rota, including conservatory cleans (roof and windows, inside and out), summerhouses, garden rooms, soffits, fascias, guttering and solar panels. ELLA... ON UNIVERSITIES For many people my age, this is a worry at the top of the list. After getting our all-important results this year, there are far too many decisions to even comprehend, and along with them, far too many possible consequences. Getting good enough grades to get in to university is only the beginning of the battle, choosing where to go is more like a tactical war plan, to which strategy is key. Courses need to be evaluated and compared, accommodation needs to be examined, tutors and professors all need to be looked up, the ‘community feel’ of the institution needs assessing, (literally hours can be spent navigating student forums which debate the pros and cons of collegiate vs. non-collegiate unis), the distance from home needs to be accounted for, the transport to and from campus, and not forgetting the heavy artillery; cost. Frankly, I’d rather sit at home and watch films, but that doesn’t change the fact that the applications some of us make this year will not only affect us for the following three years, but potentially forever. Some of the closest friends will be made at university; in fact a relatively high percentage of couples will have met at university. You might leave with a degree and also a life partner to boot. Not to mention the fact that it will follow you on your CV for the rest of your life, along with your degree choice. All the more important then that we don’t choose wrong. 27,000 students dropped out last year, and according to the Telegraph, 32 percent said they might have chosen a different course if they’d had more information. It’s an expensive mistake to make, both in terms of money, and time spent being unhappy.

The alternative to forget the whole kerfuffle and get yourself a job instead begins to look very appealing, and of course will get you a whole lot less debt. However, then you miss out on the student years, supposedly the best years of your life. Free from parental influence, but without the responsibilities of a job, living communally, training your mind, gaining confidence, discovering yourself and who you want to become. And drinking, a fair bit of drinking. And parties. But mostly self-discovery. I’m sure it’ll be worth it in the end… - Ella 50 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

“The food bank is not an alternative to the supermarket, so they can “spend more on fags and beer” as one uncharitable person put it. The people who arrive at Hope Central have been to the statutory organisations and have previously been assessed to be in need.” Ryedale Foodbank simply fulfils a need. No more form filling and no more probing questions. You can expect just a cuppa and a friendly chat and a “Can we help you with anything else?”, or “Have you heard of .........” (Besom or Hope Debt Advice etc.)
To date Ryedale Foodbank has helped over 35 people in need, 13 of them children, and the food donated by the public totals over 3 metric tonnes. I do enjoy watching ‘Dragons’ Den’ on television, where potential entrepreneurs pitch an idea to five millionaires for an investment into their new business idea. I am particularly amused by those who see themselves as ‘inventors’; who believe they have spotted a ‘gap in the market’ and invent a solution they now want to sell. Some persuade the Dragons to invest and others leave with nothing. Recently, an inventor presented the ‘all-weather washing line’ - a solution to drying clothes in the rain, a cover for a rotary line! He had correctly recognised a problem, the unpredictable weather in Britain makes it difficult to dry clothes outside, yet, according to the Dragons, his solution wasn’t practical. The cover assumed that the rain fell vertically, not at an angle from the side; it didn’t take into consideration potential wind or the need for warm air for the drying process.
Such is the need locally, a foodbank distribution centre is also planned for Pickering in a few months’ time. This means that people won’t have to travel so far and incur the extra cost that involves (if you are having trouble feeding yourself going on the bus to Malton will be an expense you could do without). The Dragons soon decided the idea was not fit for purpose and not worthy of investment. But the inventor didn’t give up, he didn’t get his investment but he was determined not to listen to the Dragons. He believed he had spotted a problem and found the solution and now, if you do a quick search on Google, you will find his website selling ‘all weather washing lines.’ I think we all like to see someone succeed against the odds. This man refused to let the critical words of others dampen his belief that he had found the solution to a problem. So often, we pay too much attention to what others think and say, especially critics who pass judgement on who we are, what we believe and what we have to offer. I believe each one of us is ‘fit for purpose’, able to make a contribution and a difference to the world we live in. I wonder how many attempts this inventor had before he found a solution to the problem. How many other people had told him to give up, he was never going to be a success, and he was never going to make his mark? I’m glad he didn’t let past failures or negative words from others stop him from believing he had a future and the potential to make a difference. So, why do we? www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 658776 • 55

SPRING FORWARD, FALL BACK
T
he Americanised mnemonic in the title helps us remember which way the clocks change in the autumn or spring. On the 27th October clocks must be put back by one hour, bringing the UK back to GMT, Greenwich Mean Time. But when and why did this all start? Before railways were invented, towns in Britain set their own times known as Local Time, dictated by when the sun rose and set with midday when the sun was at its highest. So the time in London was around twenty minutes ahead of the time in Land’s End. With people travelling relatively short distances by horsedrawn vehicles, they just adjusted their pocket-watch to their destination’s Local Time upon arrival. However, the developing rail system, along with the introduction of telegrams, meant Local Time became increasingly inconvenient. Rail timetables, for example, were impossible to create. Something needed to be done to solve these logistical problems. An international group met in 1884 to discuss the issue and decided that Greenwich Mean Time would be used as the global standard, with all other countries measuring their time differences in relation to GMT. Greenwich was chosen because the longestablished “Nautical Almanac”, written by Nevil Maskelyne in the 18th century, referred all distance tables to the Greenwich meridian – 0° longitude. This method has remained to this day. British Summer Time was first proposed in 1907 by William Willett, who used to ride his horse through the Kent countryside early every morning. Irritated by everyone still asleep while the sun had been up for hours, he published a leaflet called “The Waste of Daylight”. His seemingly eccentric proposal was not acknowledged although he continued to campaign for its acceptance until his death in 1915. Willett’s arguments for the change included longer daylight working hours and the saving of fuel during the evenings. The First World War brought a sudden change when Germany, its allies and occupied territories introduced the system in 1916 for these precise reasons. A few weeks later Britain and its allies followed suit by

introducing British Summer Time on the 21st May 1916. A number of experiments have taken place since the first introduction of British summer Time. For example, during the Second World War Britain tried out Double British Summer Time by leaving the clocks one hour ahead of Greenwich Mean Time during the winter and two hours ahead in the summer. And in 1968 clocks were put forward as usual in March but not reversed in October. This three-year trial was called British Standard Time and lasted until 1971. Clock changing has always been controversial but the pros equal the cons so no resolution has ever happened despite continual lobbying. We just have to remember to change every single clock and watch in our homes. If you think that’s complicated, consider the problem encountered in a town in Australia. Tweed Heads, in New South Wales is located on the border of Queensland. Here you can actually change time zones simply by crossing a road. New South Wales uses Daylight Savings Time while Queensland doesn’t. Timed well, you could celebrate two birthdays in one day. And you thought we had problems changing the clocks by only one hour twice a year! Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 8th October

CHRONICLES IN THE LIFE OF ALFIE PART 3 for this, I would most definitely have got away with it.
AN ALTERNATIVE VIEW OF A DAY IN PRACTICE. Today I’m in trouble. This is my fault! Last night Phil finished work late so ordered an Indian takeaway, which he left on the kitchen side, whilst he locked the car. I had only meant to sniff it, perhaps taste a little but it was just so good I ate it. All of it! Phil was not at all happy when he returned to find me amongst the empty foil trays, which I had also torn apart for good measure. Of course I tried to deny any involvement, to pretend there had never been a curry, sadly my ears had slipped in it and had turned a funny colour. I think had it not been
Phil was very cross, which I only made worse when I tried to ingratiate myself by rubbing up against him and accidently rubbed my curry soaked ears on his new sofa. I slumped off to bed, promising to myself I would never be so bad again, and I meant it, I really did, I hated making Phil cross. Unfortunately this was not to be the case. I had woken with a start. I had known it was late as the house was quiet and bathed in darkness. My stomach was painful and grumbling. I felt apologetic but Phil needed to let me out. I had run upstairs and jumped on the bed and started to lick Phil’s face to alert him to my needs. This was not gratefully received and I found myself in the hallway with the bedroom door shut firmly behind me. Feeling sorry for myself I curled up on the new sofa, which had instantly made me feel better as it still smelt of Phil. It was on this sofa that I was then

fter a busy summer of fund raising our charity, like most small charities, is looking ahead to the winter and the constant juggle between saving dogs and raising enough funds to pay their kennels fees through the winter months. Opportunities to fundraise are fewer yet the need to take in and rehome dogs continues to grow. Sadly we are always full and have to turn dogs away. Spare a thought for your local dog rescues and if you see a collection tin, even if you only have a few coppers to give, they will always be appreciated. If you run a shop or pub and are able to have one of our collection tins we would be extremely grateful.

sick. Very sick. This is where Phil found me this morning as he came downstairs muttering about bad dogs and no sleep. The journey to work was a tense one. I sat in the foot-well quietly and did not react even when Phil bought a bacon sandwich and proceeded to eat it in front of me. At work I silently greeted the others then laid on my bed in disgrace. Later that morning the girls let me into the garden. After pottering around for a bit I got bored, it was then that I found the hole in the fence. Following a smell, I found some feathered friends who seemed to want to play. It was so exciting watching them run around squawking and flapping. We did have fun together!

Before long hearing the commotion the land-owner appeared. I knew I was in trouble when she rang the Vets and told them to retrieve me. I slipped back through the hole in the hedge and back to the practice. Phil was out on a horse call, so I climbed sleepily back onto my bed, happy in the knowledge that he would have forgiven me by now. I was where he had left me and there was no evidence of today’s adventures. I smirked at how clever I was getting. Little did I know that I had chicken feathers stuck in my fur until Phil returned to work that evening…………..

RYEDALE DOG RESCUE
W
e believe that every dog, no matter what the breed or age deserves a loving home.
Which is why when we make the difficult visits to the council pounds we prioritise those dogs most at risk of being put down, rather than just take the dogs that we know will be easy to rehome. We recently had to launch a desperate appeal to help us raise funds to rescue more dogs as the pounds were full and many dogs were facing an uncertain future. Despite a busy fundraising calendar we are always in desperate need of donations, so if you can spare a few pounds a month this could help us to save another dog. For more information on providing a monthly donation please call the rescue or email ryedaledogrescue@yahoo.co.uk
Ryedale Dog Rescue NEEDS YOU!
We are an entirely volunteer run charity and every penny we raise goes towards rescuing and caring for our dogs, but we are a small team and we are always looking for new volunteers. So if you can spare a day a month to man a fundraising stall, organise an annual fundraising event or maybe you are a whizz on Ebay?...Any hour you can give will be appreciated, by us and of course the dogs! If you are interested in volunteering for the rescue please contact Sarah on 07764 628015 or email ryedaledogrescue@yahoo.co.uk
