W
elcome to the October edition.
As I write the summer is coming to an end and we are back to school term time. It was lovely having a month without a magazine to print and not being a slave to the computer, although I’m quite looking forward to feeling more organised and back in a routine – my two children are probably not feeling the same way! There is so much to enjoy in October this year. As the leaves start to turn, volunteers of the Kirkbymoorside Environment group will be out fruit picking, juicing and making jams and chutneys for their local community. Last year they saved over 2 tonnes of fruit from going to waste. If you would like to join them, you can find out more on page 58. The Ryedale Book Festival promises an inspirational weekend of storytelling, writing, performance, book signing and cinema. From Dickens to Michael Morpurgo (our cover photo) and Hansel and Gretel to recipes, there is something for everyone this year. You can find out more on page 41. These events along with Pickering War Weekend and many others on our ‘what’s on’ pages will make for a great October. And enjoy it while it lasts as when the clocks go back on the 26th we will be in the run up to winter, cold weather and I won’t even mention the ‘C’ word yet! Remember to be prepared with boilers serviced, chimneys swept and logs and coal in the shed ready. We have lots of local businesses in the Handy Mag this month who are ready to help. Well done to Mrs Smith of Pickering for winning the Aug/Sept competition. Until next month…

GOVERNMENT ATTACKS PENSIONERS. AGAIN.
Julie Wilson, Straight talking Chartered Financial Planner
T
he most radical changes to pensions in almost a hundred years were announced in the Chancellor’s 2014 Budget. Almost overnight, “vulnerable pensioners” have become “empowered investors” who will be allowed to access their entire pension fund and use it as they wish. In the olden days, restrictions applied on how much of your pension pot could be taken, in exchange for the valuable tax relief you’d have enjoyed as you saved up. None of that nonsense in future. In this new golden age you can have the lot. 25% of it will be tax-free, as it is now, but the balance will be taxed (at up to 45%.)
The more cynical amongst us might see this as a barely veiled attempt by the Government to get their hands on your taxable pension quicker than if they had to wait your entire lifetime to get it. A bird in the hand and all that. Anyway, the consultation on the new pension flexibility goes on. And we are a little closer to knowing what the new regime is going to look like. Worryingly, research is already showing that a significant number of pensioners are intending to take out their entire pension fund and put it in the bank. Proof, if it were needed, that consumers are completely befuddled by the tax consequences of doing so. Investments in a pension fund grow virtually tax free. But if you take it all out, you’ll be taxed on everything above 25% – and that tax could be as high as 45% (depending on your other income). And then when you put it on the bank you’ll be taxed again. And if you’re subject to Inheritance Tax, it could be taxed again when you die. It’s just bonkers.
The good news is that the Government is intending to provide impartial financial guidance by independent bodies to everyone approaching retirement. The bad news is that it looks like that guidance is going to be delivered by the Money Advice Service – the very same organisation Treasury Select Committee, Andrew Tyrie, expressed “serious concerns” about, and Money Savings Expert Martin Lewis described as “an atrocious waste of millions of pounds of public funds.” Another glaring example of your incompetent Government at work. HMRC estimates the extra tax it will collect as a result of pensioners moving their tax free pensions into taxable savings at £4 billion by 2020. It’s just as well the Government decided that yesterdays’ “vulnerable pensioners” became todays’ “empowered investors”, otherwise this would look like daylight robbery.

Healthy and fun with a bit of patience chucked in the bowl... INGREDIENTS: • 150g /2 cups desiccated coconut • 125g /1 cup cashews • 60g / ¼ cup runny honey • zest of 1 lemon, lime or orange • 35g /3 tbsp freeze dried passionfruit powder • 1 tsp vanilla powder or 1/2 tsp vanilla extract • 20g / ¼ cup organic, grass fed whey powder (optional) • 40g cacao butter, melted • 100g basic dark chocolate recipe, melted and tempered (can also use Pro Raw Chocolate or Forever Cacao chocolate bars for this).
METHOD: • First of all, make space in your fridge, if you intend to drizzle or dip these in chocolate, so the tray can sit flat. In a food processor, blix cashews into a fine meal. • Add remaining ingredients and process to combine. Using a small ice cream scooper or your hands, form into balls and place in the fridge to set. • Whisk the chocolate until it gets thick, you 20 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
• Once the chocolate is thick enough, either drizzle the cookies, dip them half or fully in chocolate and place them on the sheet to your right. Sprinkle with some desiccated coconut (optional). • After you have drizzled or dipped and garnished them all, place them in the fridge to set, about 15 minutes. Store in an air tight container for a few weeks.

8 Easy Ways to Cut Your Heating Oil Costs This Winter With fuel poverty on the rise and cold weather just around the corner, energy efficiency is more important than ever. If you’re on heating oil and would like to make your supply go further this winter, check out our useful tips for easy ways to stay warm for longer! 1. INSULATE
60% of the heat that escapes from your home is lost through the walls and roof. By insulating your property, using draft excluders and even closing your curtains in the evening, you can retain heat and reduce your fuel use.
2. SHOP AROUND
You might have a regular energy supplier, but are they offering you the best price? By shopping around or using an instant, impartial comparison service such as BoilerJuice, you’ll always get the best quote for your oil.
7. BLEED YOUR RADIATORS
By removing excess air from your central heating system, you can make sure that your boiler isn’t working harder than necessary (and burning more fuel than necessary) to heat your home.
8. PROTECT YOUR TANK
As winter creeps in, heating oil thefts increase. By using CCTV, installing a security light or adding a padlock to the opening of your tank, you can take steps to deter thieves and keep your oil supply safe.
3. GRAB A GADGET
Pop an insulation panel behind your radiators to reflect heat back into the room, or invest in a radiator booster, which will circulate any warm air that would have been lost behind the radiator, around your home.
4. ADD AN ADDITIVE
As well as upgrading your fuel, oil additives can help to improve the efficiency of your boiler, which in turn reduces the amount of oil required to heat your home.
5. BOOK A SERVICE
The best way to make sure that your boiler is working efficiently (and not using more oil than necessary to heat your home) is to have it serviced annually. Book a service with an OFTEC registered technician through BoilerJuice, to make sure that your boiler is in full working condition, before the cold weather hits.
6. DIAL IT DOWN
It’s important to stay warm during winter, but by throwing on an extra jumper and turning your thermostat down by just one degree, you can cut your fuel use by up to 10%! 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

T
he Encephalitis Society, an international charity based in Malton, has launched a brand new cook book to support its work and raise awareness of Encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), which affects 6,000 people in England each year. Support for the book has come from world-class chefs and celebrities alike including Michelin starred Simon Rogan, James Martin, Tonia Buxton, Rebecca Adlington and Mathew Bose. The book, titled ‘Food for thought… and brain’ was launched at a rooftop event in London on June 28th with the chefs and celebrities whose recipes feature in the book in attendance. The book is now available to purchase online from www.encephalitis.info priced at £15 with all proceeds going directly to the charity. The book is the work of Encephalitis survivor Tim Bond, whose life was devastated by the condition in 2007. Tim set up his own recruitment company in 2001 and was travelling extensively with the business. He always found time to work out in the gym and only stayed in hotels where he had the use of gym facilities. He fell ill very quickly whilst on a business trip in Spain and was in intensive care for 3 weeks before being flown back to the UK. Tim said, “On being discharged from hospital I had no understanding of what had happened, had limited mobility, reduced speech and was unable to care for myself. I found everything really difficult and was unable to cook for myself and had to relearn everything. Every day was mentally exhausting and incredibly challenging and trying to pace myself was impossible as I definitely wanted to run before I could walk and couldn’t accept that I didn’t know how to

do things for myself. Cooking has always been a passion of mine, and I was determined to rekindle that passion and learn to cook for myself again. It was frustrating at first, but oddly therapeutic in trying to relearn my lost skills. The methodical approach to cooking recipes from a book really helped my recovery. I wanted to give something back to The Encephalitis Society who were such a massive help in my time of need, as well as giving hope to others that have also been affected.” The book also includes a cocktail developed specifically for the book by internationally renowned mixologist, Ben Reed. The drink was inspired by Susannah Cahalan’s bestseller ‘Brain On Fire,’ which recounts her own story of Encephalitis. Tim will be demonstrating his cooking expertise at a one-off ‘Chef’s Table’ event at Malton Cookery School on Friday October 10th, with tickets available from The Encephalitis Society. Tim will also be hosting an event at ‘The Yard’ in Malton as part of the Ryedale Book Festival on Saturday 11th October at 12noon. With Prosecco and canapés on offer the tickets priced at just £5 are sure to sell out quickly! For more information or to book your tickets, contact The Encephalitis Society on 01653 692583. “Dr Ava Easton, Chief Executive of The Encephalitis Society said, “Encephalitis is a devastating condition that robs people of their lives. This book will raise a huge amount of awareness, whilst also providing our charity with a valuable source of income. We are so grateful to everyone who has backed this project, and enabled us to create something so amazing.” Encephalitis is inflammation of the brain, and is often triggered by infection or the body’s own immune system attacking the brain in error. There are hundreds of thousands of new cases across the globe each year. The Encephalitis Society is the only resource of its kind anywhere in the world that provides support and information for people affected both directly and indirectly by Encephalitis. ELLA... ON DRIVERLESS CARS
Does the thought of paperwork drive you crazy?
10 years ago, the idea of a car that could drive itself existed only in science fiction, yet allegedly autonomous vehicles will be allowed onto UK streets by January.
AICB CB.Cert PM.Dip
For many people, myself included, it sounds awesome. With your own electrical chauffeur, you could just pick a destination, and sit back and relax. There’d be less stress, less responsibility and, theoretically, less crashes. This is the kind of futuristic stuff that gets people excited. Others understandably find the idea not quite as relaxing. Handing your safety over to a machine is an unnerving prospect for those who aren’t completely happy with relying on technology. Not to mention those who enjoy driving anyway, and the fact that many believe themselves to be “one of the better drivers”. Many would see no need to own a driverless car, regardless of the fact that it could be much safer than a person. The concept does throw up a lot of scary questions though. If everyone had driverless cars, any accidents or collisions would no longer be the fault of the driver, but the car itself, and I suppose by extension the people who programmed it. Would you feel differently if someone you knew was involved in a crash with a driverless car, compared to if a human made the same mistake? On the subject of programming – how would the car solve a moral or ethical dilemma? Let’s say you’re in your driverless car, and you’re approaching a tunnel. Suddenly, a child runs across the tunnel’s mouth. Your car has two options: Hit the child, likely killing them, or swerve to miss the child, hitting the tunnel wall and likely killing you, and maybe even your passengers. With a problem like this, there is no real right answer – and yet someone would have to programme the car’s decision. What happens then, and who, if anyone, would be to blame? This is all beginning to sound like an Isaac Asimov novel, but the future is fast approaching. Within most of our lifetimes, these kinds of questions will have to be more than just thought experiments. Although it’s kind of cool, it’s also kind of terrifying. Ella 32 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

yet evocative description of human emotions and firmly fleshed-out characters. In fact, Yorkshire itself is really another character in the ‘dramatis personae’, thanks to Steiner’s skilful use of farm detail and evocative naturalistic imagery.
BOOKS Homecoming by Susie Steiner Homecoming is the debut novel penned by Susie Steiner, former Guardian journalist. Set in 2005 in North Yorkshire, Homecoming follows the Hartle family – Ann and Joe, sons Max and Bartholomew and their respective partners – through a turbulent year. While the plot could be described as a ‘kitchen sink’ drama which meets The Archers (The Observer), the careful use of tension, robust character building and raw emotion lifts this story above becoming another soap opera. Steiner’s writing recognises our human frailties, our flaws and our faults, yet acknowledges we ‘get on with it’, come hell or high water. The strength of this novel lies in its use of resonant
Steiner’s inspired use of different points of view, dependent on which part of the story is currently being narrated, keeps readers on their toes. Homecoming will make you laugh and probably cry. Without giving too much away, it would be a hard-hearted reader that could not be moved by the description of the tragedy which befalls the Hartle’s flock of ewes come springtime. Steiner explores the testing labyrinth that forms human existence: marriage, sibling squabbles, and parent-child dynamics; she sets these tangled goings-on against Mother Nature, whose powerful presence forms the backbone to the story and shows her to be a cruel and sometimes unforgiving tyrant. By the close of the novel, our complete faith in the Hartle family – and the human condition - is restored and we can’t help but feel we’re part of their gang. Homecoming is a gem of read, and one which I would thoroughly recommend. Susie Steiner will appear at this year’s Ryedale Book Festival on October 11th.

From Italy with love... The story of our vests
B
ack in the late 90s, Bella di Notte founder Susan Johnson headed to Italy looking for romance. On a cold November day in Umbria she was seduced, not by the man of her dreams, but by a vest! She fell head over heels in love with the slinky, seam free vests she discovered in an Italian market. They were made from the softest merino wool and silk adorned with guipure lace – a gorgeous alternative to the traditional thermals she knew back home in Yorkshire. “I couldn’t believe how soft they were, I used to wait longingly in front of the washing machine until the moment I could wear it again.” Susan decided to turn her passion for Italian vests into a business. Her aim was to give thermals the look and feel of lingerie with expert fitting and exquisite quality natural fibres. She managed to get
a small start-up loan for £2500 from the Prince’s Trust and took a risk spending it all on vest stock. “It was tough in the early days, no one in Italy would deal with me because I was young and inexperienced.” Each knock on the door to potential new suppliers was met with a setback but Susan was tenacious. She finally found a small family firm to make her designs and her business started to take off. That first winter she sold all her vests to new customers who shared her passion so much that sales doubled each year. So Bella di Notte was born with the idea that thermals can be sexy, warm and fit comfortably. Susan didn’t stop there. Bella di Notte now has over 50,000 customers and has become a fit specialist offering a huge range of bras in AA to I cup, swimwear, nightwear and clothing. KITCHEN & BEDOOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we

wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had
her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 23 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and bathrooms. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source just about any

UPTO 30% OFF FITTED BEDROOMS kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big
investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure

Marcel Franzel has sung with Dutch groups including barbershop and church choirs and a 60-strong mixed choir. He praised the Malton group’s “friendly and enthusiastic members” and its “good quality singing” and said he had been proud to be a part of it. Matt Journeé sang in a three-piece rock band in New Zealand and had never sung with a choir before but came along out of curiosity. “After one session I was hooked”, he admitted. “It’s fun and there’s plenty of laughter as well as singing”, he said. He also noted “you can sing in the choir until your very senior years”. The choir’s oldest member is 87, the youngest 20. Marcel Franzel (left) and Matt Journeé say good bye to Malton

GARDENING
Recycling Your Garden well as your back as you rake them up. Put them to good use by creating leaf mould – a beneficial enriching additive for your soil.
A
utumn sees the end of the main growing season and the start of dormant winter months, with most plants dying back leaving you with a lot of tidying up to do. If you have deciduous trees around your garden, the accumulation of fallen leaves will play havoc with your grass and plants, as
bin. The ideal compost heap or bin is easily accessible, has a lid or cover, located in a sunny or semi-shaded and placed directly onto the ground well away from watercourses.
To make leaf mould, poke some holes in the sides and base of a black bin liner and put the leaves into it. When almost full, shake the bag, add a little water if the leaves are dry, and tie up the bag. Stack in a shady spot and by next autumn the leaves will have broken down to a rich crumbly mixture that can be used as a mulch or soil conditioner.
Composting comprises a mix of ‘green’ and ‘brown’ materials. ‘Greens’ are nitrogen-rich ingredients that encourage the growth of leaves and stems and speed up the decomposition rate by heating up the heap. They include grass cuttings, fruit and veg scraps from your kitchen, old cut flowers, soft green prunings and any plant or weed remains.
For the other waste in your garden, now is the time to increase your composting capabilities by getting a compost

RYEDALE • OCTOBER 2014 • ISSUE 103 will just perpetuate the weed problem. ‘Browns’ are carbon rich materials that slow the composting process down and ensure a good quality result. They include such items as teabags and coffee grounds, straw and animal bedding from cows, horses or family pets, poultry manure and bedding, woody prunings and even cardboard and paper in small quantities. Try not to let one material dominate the heap - too many grass clippings can make the compost slimy and foul. Solve this problem by adding bulky materials such as straw, shredded hedge clippings or even crumpled newspaper. Do not compost any cooked food, coal ash, cat and dog litter, disposable nappies, meat and fish, glossy magazines or invasive perennial weeds like bindweed. A good compost heap with evenly matched ingredients and warm conditions will be ready in approximately two to four months whereas a heap left unattended and using bulkier material may take over a year to fully decompose. Either way, what a superb way to recycle your waste and add nutrients to your garden!

P
aul is an experienced tradesman with nearly 30 years in the business, and is fully qualified and registered with GasSafe.
BEAUTIFUL BATHROOMS
Paul specialises in fitting exquisite bathrooms that will have –as both he and his happy customers put it –the ‘wow’ factor. He said, “I take pains to use the best quality materials from local merchants who I personally trust. When it comes to the supply and installation of a new bathroom, if it wouldn’t be good enough for my house it isn’t good enough for my customers either.” Paul prefers to source all the bathrooms fixtures and fittings himself, so he can guarantee the quality of the finished
bathroom. He works to your budget, advising on how to allocate it sourcing suites and fixtures at the best possible prices and guaranteeing incredible value for money. It’s a completely effortless service for the customer –he’ll project manage everything from start right through to decorating. All you need to do is pick up the phone each evening while work is under way for Paul’s update on how things are progressing. Fans, glass screens or even complex spaces that need a bit more expertise to work with are all part of Paul’s specialties – he has even installed a television into a customer’s bathroom!

portfolio of images from work he’s completed in the past which as well as giving an idea of what he can do, can also inspire your design ideas.
CENTRAL HEATING
Paul Chaplow Plumbing and Heating specialize in installing heating into new builds or extensions. As well as traditional gas central heating installations, they are also happy to install increasingly-popular under-floor heating.
LEAD WORK SPECIALIST
Lead work on roofs and around windows is most often carried out by leadsmiths –but it was traditionally part of the plumbers’ job, and Paul’s apprenticeship included full training. Loft conversions and roof extensions with dormer windows often benefit from a more intricate type of lead flashing, which Paul can take care of, along with traditional lead bay windows and box gutters.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP
KIRKBY FRUIT PROJECT By the time you read this the early apples will be ready and the new season for the fruit project will be underway. The volunteer run project began 2 years ago with the aim of preventing surplus local fruit from going to waste by finding a way of using it and perhaps raising some funds for community activities. The first year was a steep learning curve but then came the bumper harvest of 2013 when we managed to stop over 2 tonnes of surplus fruit from going to waste! One of the activities that proved very popular was a community juicing day when local people were invited to bring their surplus apples along and put them through our press then take their juice home. Following on from the success of the session last October, and the feedback we received, this year we hope to organise 2 community juicing days. The first will be around the end of September to deal with the early season apples then the second at the end of October to catch the later ripening apples. Precise dates are difficult to predict until we know just how quickly the apples will ripen but will be publicised on the town blog nearer the time. This year alongside our juicing we have plans for some new fruit related activities including a fruit tree grafting course, master-classes in making your own apple juice and cider and a look at the history of fruit growing in the area. Early indications are that this year’s crop is not going to be quite so large but whatever comes along the volunteers will be ready for the challenge of picking, juicing and making jams and chutneys. We are always happy to welcome new volunteers so why not come along and join us. Kirkbymoorside Environment Group www.kms-environmentgroup.org.uk Email: KMEGadmin@phonecoop.coop

THE SOUND OF MUSIC KEEPS VILLAGE SHARP
A
new craze for playing music is sweeping through a Ryedale village - but it’s not the teenagers leading the way but a band of pensioners with ages up to 94. Under the tuition of a local retired headteacher, some 20 pensioners are now practising and playing the ukulele every week in Thornton Dale. They have been involved in two concerts in the village that have already raised more than £2500 for charity. Such is the growing popularity of the ukulele lessons that a group from Sight Support, involving blind and partially-sighted people, have also recently taken up the instrument with great success. “I cannot believe how popular this has become and the enthusiasm of people in the area to either join the group or come along and join in a singalong session,” said John Scoble, retired primary headteacher, who is providing the ukulele lessons.
was so impressed by the band that he too has joined in the fun. “It’s quite amazing to see what an impact a small donation from the Lions has achieved. The band has repaid our investment many times over through the money it has since raised to help others in need,” said Geoff. Anyone interested in joining the group, which is free and no previous experience is required, can contact John Scoble on 01751 474027 or Geoff Chaplin on 01751 474701.
John, of The Rise, only started learning the ukulele himself five years ago when he read about dementia and how learning a new musical instrument could be an effective way of keeping the mind active and healthy. He approached the Ryedale Lions Club for help with his ‘Music in the Community’ project and the club made a donation to buy five instruments to help novices give it a try. In less than a year the band is booming. One group of players living in the Rowntree Trust homes in Roxby Gardens, including 94-year-old Alice Collinson, have got so keen on playing the ukulele that they have started extra get-togethers and called themselves the Roxby Rockers. The latest performance was a birthday party surprise for 103-year-old Monique Bennett, whose daughter Janet, just 75, plays in the Thornton Dale Ukulele Group and Roxby Rockers. “I heard about the ukulele group at a coffee morning and just wanted to have a go. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed every moment playing and getting to know people,” said Janet. Ryedale Lions Club member Geoff Chaplin, who helped organise the club’s ukulele donation, 60 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

A GREAT SUMMER OF FUNDRAISING It has been a busy summer of fundraising for the team of volunteers at Ryedale Dog Rescue and we would like to thank everyone who has supported us by coming along to our dog shows and helping us to raise vital funds. Thanks to your support we will be able to rescue more dogs and help them to find loving, forever homes. We are now gearing up for Christmas (yes already!) when we know that the pounds will be full of dogs in a desperate situation and rescues like us will be needed to ensure that unwanted and abandoned dogs are given a second chance. So how can you help us this year... VOLUNTEER - We are always looking for people who can spare an hour or two to help us fundraise or man a stall BAKE OR MAKE - We are currently looking for donations of home made gifts that we can sell on our stalls - Do you bake fabulous cakes or could you make some unique gifts? BUY ONE OF OUR FABULOUS RDR CALENDARS featuring some of the dogs we rescued this year!
DOGS OF THE MONTH - MINDY Mindy is a young crossbred puppy (6 months at most) who is full of life but also has a natural shy streak. She is slightly nervous when first meeting people but soon comes out of her shell. Mindy is already walking on a lead without pulling and knows sit/give paw and retrieve ball after only a few weeks of being with us. She is a very lively little girl who loves running and jumping so agility is a possibility but she needs more training before she could be let off the lead. Everyone who meets Mindy falls in love with this lovely little girl. To find out more about Mindy or any of the dogs we currently have for adoption please call us on 07581 324153.

BENEFITS AND RISKS INVOLVED IN FEEDING RAW DIETS Celia Carr RVN Station House Vets In today’s world we have a multitude of different diets, all claiming various health benefits. The same can be said for dogs. There is an increasing number of people who wish to avoid commercially prepared diets and instead feed their dogs raw food diets also known as BARF (Bones and Raw Food). Raw food diets are gaining popularity and are based on what dogs ate before they became domesticated. They typically consist of muscle and meat, bones, organ meats, raw eggs, vegetables and some dairy. Followers of the BARF diet report various benefits including shinier coats, healthier skin, cleaner teeth and better breath, higher energy levels and smaller stools. However choosing to feed
a raw diet does not come without risks. There is a threat to human and animal health from the bacteria contained in raw meat. Studies carried out on a variety of raw diets showed Salmonella and E.coli were both present which can be shed in faeces with a potential for humans to become exposed and infected. Toxoplasmosis can also be present in raw meat which is extremely dangerous to pregnant women. Another worry is the risk of missing out on major food groups or not feeding them in the correct quantities. In a study of five raw food diets, three homemade and two commercially available, all were all found to have nutritional deficiencies or excesses that could damage the dogs health when given long term. Vets often see evidence of this in dogs presenting with bad coats - a sign of too little fat in the diet. Mild anaemia is a result of too much fat and not enough protein. Homemade diets can lack the correct amounts of calcium and phosphorus, essential for healthy bones and teeth. Even if they are present in the correct amounts, if the diet is of a poor quality, it may make it difficult for the dog to absorb the calcium and phosphorus properly. Some raw meat diets can

t is now the end of the fundraising season for the Pickering and Malton Branch and our stall in Pickering Flea Market has closed.
We would like to thank all our supporters who brought books and tombola prizes for the stall and treats for the rescue dogs. We will still have a collection tin in the flea market but there will be nowhere to leave donation of goods for the charity. Treats for the rescue dogs will still be gratefully received as they look forward to them so much and can be left at the counter at the far end of the market. If you are looking for a dog please remember there are some gorgeous dogs in the local rescues and most charities post photos of their dogs on their websites. RYEDALE • OCTOBER 2014 • ISSUE 103 contain too much liver which over time could lead to a vitamin A toxicity known as Hypervitaminosis A although this condition is uncommon. Feeding raw bones can lead to further problems such as internal puncture following ingestion, choking on bones and tooth fractures. Furthermore bones are not good for the teeth as they cause damage to the enamel. Dogs with late stage kidney or severe liver failure should avoid Raw diets altogether and opt for a commercially available kidney/ liver diet, which is low in protein to prevent further damage to the organs. Dogs with pancreatitis or other digestive problems should start with a cooked homemade diet prescribed by a vet until their symptoms clear up before changing to a raw version. In conclusion high quality commercially available dog foods have been tested extensively over many years to ensure they are nutritionally balanced and undergo rigorous testing and procedures to keep Salmonella and E.coli cases to a minimum just as in human food. Commercial food is far less time consuming, considerably cheaper and does not carry the risks previously mentioned.

HOW HYPNOTHERAPY CAN HELP YOU
L
et’s face it life can sometimes be challenging and we all need help to get back on the right track. Whether it is assistance with stopping smoking, losing weight, or getting rid of a longstanding phobia, Hypnotherapy can often be just the answer you are looking for. Helen Priestley is a qualified, experienced Clinical Hypnotherapist and uses her knowledge and skills to help local people. Her own experience of Hypnosis inspired her career. She says: “I did a Hypnobirthing course prior to the birth of my first son some 8 years ago and I found the powerful techniques kept me so calm throughout the birth, I was hooked. It is fascinating and extremely rewarding work.” Helen is often asked what Hypnosis will feel like: “There are a lot of myths around Hypnosis. We all naturally go into a very relaxed hypnotic like state many times a day, for example when we are absorbed in our work or daydreaming. Hypnotherapists use this state to work with the client’s unconscious mind to make positive changes for the better. “Traditionally Hypnotherapy has a good track record with smoking cessation and weight control, but there are many other issues which respond well including pain control, confidence, phobias, habits such as gambling and preparation for important events such as a driving test or exams.” Helen is often asked how many sessions will be required; “Everyone is different but a good rule of thumb is between 3 and 6 sessions.” Trust and rapport between Hypnotherapist and client are very important. “This is why I like to offer a free 30 minute face to face or telephone consultation. It re-assures clients and allows me time to talk about how I can help them with absolutely no obligation on their part” Helen works from her own purpose built peaceful treatment room in Norton. Dr Parker BDS has selected this particular plan because she has experience of it working well for patients over an extended period. It also offers a redundancy protection clause, unlike most other membership schemes, which is good to know in these challenging times. There are a host of other benefits which we can discuss at the open day. We’re here to help with any questions you might have. We also offer fee per item treatment for those not wishing to take this plan. Call in to see our fabulous facilities and meet our friendly team as we have dedicated this day to allowing access to the practice. We help you enjoy good dental health and the confidence it brings.

MOTORING New Mazda 3 Fastback
By Tim Barnes-Clay, Motoring Writer www.carwriteups.co.uk Trounced competition includes the Ford Focus, Honda Civic, Peugeot 308, Renault Megane, Toyota Auris, Vauxhall Astra and Volkswagen Golf.
If you’re a company car driver, the chances are you’re looking to shrink your tax bill and free up cash to meet other outgoings. If this is the case, fret not, because the new Mazda3 has arrived. You see, 2014/15 company car benefit-in-kind tax bills, lower than a host of rivals, are set to make the Mazda3 the sensible financial choice for fleet managers and drivers alike. Mazda posted sales of 8,576 cars in March. That’s a surge of 40% over the same month last year, well ahead of the industry rise of 18 per cent. Much of that is down to the Mazda3, launched at the beginning of the year. What’s more, data from vehicle valuation experts CAP Automotive, reveals that the Mazda3 beats numerous similar sized rivals in terms of average forecasted pound note depreciation.
Due to its low-slung stance, the Mazda3 is curvaceously distinctive and creates a powerful visual link with its fresh Mazda6 and Mazda CX-5 siblings. With kerb weights starting at 1,347kg for the petrol-powered 2 litre 120 SKYACTIV-G Fastback that I drove – it’s one of the lightest members of its class. Much of this weight-saving is attributable to the increase in the proportion of high-tensile and ultra-high tensile steels in the Mazda3’s body shell. It’s been boosted from 50 to 60 per cent to create a strong and impact resistant structure. Behind the wheel, the Fastback petrol powered version offers precision handling, with 0-62mph arriving in 8.8 seconds. Disappointingly, it doesn’t feel as rapid as that and top speed is a measly 123mph. It is also reassuring to know the Mazda3 is officially one of the safest cars on the road in the UK after receiving a top five star safety
@carwriteups rating in the Euro NCAP tests. The brand’s all-time bestseller achieved outstanding marks, scoring 93% (for adult) and 86% (for child) occupant protection, and 65% and 81% for pedestrian protection and safety assist respectively. The Mazda comes with many airbags as well as gadgetry known as Smart City Brake Support, which helps to reduce or prevent low-speed collisions by automatically applying the brakes if you fail to act. The motor also has Hill Hold Assist fitted to prevent roll back on inclines. Further standard equipment includes alloy wheels, air-conditioning, power-folding heated mirrors, leather steering wheel, trip computer, radio/CD with six speaker audio system, seveninch colour touch screen, USB/ iPod connectivity and Bluetooth hands-free connectivity. All in all, the four-door, front wheel-drive saloon has exceptionally generous interior cabin space, and a sporty design to give standout appeal both on the road and in the company car park.

WISH UPON A STAR? Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church
Can’t wait, next year I hope to go to Disney Florida! You may laugh, I know I’m too old, but my girls have grown up watching the Disney films, singing along with the songs in the car and dreaming that they too will meet a Prince and wear that perfect wedding dress! Many times, especially when they were younger I heard them say, ‘I wish we could go to Disney, Dad!’ It was their dream, their wish but looking at my bank balance it was certainly not a possibility. So what has changed? How did a wish become a hope and is there a difference? In 1940, just after the beginning of World War II, Disney released the film Pinocchio featuring, what has now become the iconic Disney song, ‘When you wish upon a star’. Memories of World War I were still very real and hope was in short supply, so perhaps it’s not surprising people were inspired to find solace in the world of make believe. To escape reality, to wish upon a star, to have a dream and to know that ‘if you heart is in your dream, no request is too extreme’! But did they find genuine hope, or simply wish upon a star? We all need hope to inspire us to live each day and to persevere when things are tough and out of our control. Real hope is a genuine expectation that a dream, belief or goal can, and will, be fulfilled. It may seem impossible but there is an explanation to why it is possible. Sadly I have never found a star that can fulfil a wish. However, for me, my faith in God has given me hope. His unlimited power, love and wisdom encourage me that if He says something is going to happen or He is going to do something, I can trust Him; I have a genuine expectation it will happen and an explanation to how it can happen. In fact, He ‘is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine’. Over the years I have learnt to place my dreams in His hands, to trust in His ability and know that for Him all things are possible. Every day I enjoy the comfort of genuine hope and no longer have to simply wish upon a star.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
