W
elcome to the October edition. Summer holidays are over, our children back to school or off on new ventures at university and the like. I always feel this time of year is a new start. It is certainly a new start for our daughter who is off to university down south. Having lived village life, she’s very excited by the bright lights of a big city. Everything will be on her doorstep, independent and, we trust, being responsible! I’m sure she’ll have a fantastic time (amongst the studying!) but I think I’d miss seeing the horizon and the beautiful scenery in Ryedale and the Vale of York – that and our dogs! Good luck to all those heading off to University this term. Autumn, and the weather here has already cooled down – and that’s saying something after our rubbish summer! Plan ahead, with our fantastic local companies for servicing your boiler, repairing your roof or stocking up on logs and fuel in time for even worse weather to come! Have a look through this edition for their details. Autumn is also a time I enjoy curling up with a book and Ryedale Book Festival in Malton will be on my ‘to do’ list this month (October 10th and 11th). The festival includes events throughout the town, including at the Castle Gardens, in the Milton Rooms and its historic Town Hall. Find out more on page 17. October is also the season for the ‘Pride of Malton and Norton Awards’! I am delighted that the Handy Mag is sponsoring this fantastic community event. If you would like to support the event, that is taking place at the Old Lodge Hotel, have a read on page XX for details of where to get your tickets. Speaking of awards, our very own Helmsley might be in the finals of the Great British High Street awards. See page 8. An amazing group of local business owners work hard to promote the town and keep it for locals and tourists. Until next month…

HELMSLEY MAKES A BID TO BE HAILED BRITAIN’S BEST HIGH STREET
COMMUNITY AND VISITORS ASKED TO SHOW THEIR SUPPORT IN PUBLIC VOTE
R
yedale’s Helmsley is asking the local community to get behind its bid to be voted Britain’s Best High Street.
Helmsley has entered the market town category of the Great British High Street Awards 2015, and has high hopes for its chances of success. Recognising the important role high streets play in communities, judges look for evidence that businesses, the community and local organisations work together, and for innovative ways in which they encourage the area to thrive, enhancing the visitor experience.
For the first time, the public is encouraged to vote this year, which will make up 50 per cent of the final mark. The entry has been spearheaded by the Helmsley in Business Group, set up in 2012 by two local businesses who wanted ensure Helmsley remained a great place to live and work. The group now includes over 50 members, working together for the benefit of the whole town. The group puts on popular events, such as the annual Christmas Tree Festival and Festive Fun Day. This year, an event was held to mark Helmsley’s position as home to one of the Magna Carta Barons, celebrating the town’s heritage. The events raise important funds for local charities, community groups such as the local school and open air pool, and have helped the town buy additional Christmas decorations. Another key aim of Helmsley in Business is to encourage organisations to work together for the greater good. The group works with partners such as the Federation of Small Businesses, the Local Enterprise Partnership, local councils and the North York Moors National Park to ensure visitors’ needs are met and business owners can gain the support they need. The group also collaborates on innovative marketing projects, such as its PR, the town’s website, brochures and a promotional video. Carolyn Frank, who worked with other Helmsley in Business members to collate the award entry, owns Libby Butler Jewellers in the town. She said: “I think what Helmsley in Business has achieved in three years is fantastic. We all work together now, and the partnerships that have been forged are so important – as a group we have a much louder voice than we do as individuals. We can get things done, things that make life better for residents,

It is so unique. But you can’t ever rest on your laurels, and you’ve constantly got to be evolving and adapting to new needs. Our small businesses are thinking big, and our community is strong because we believe in working together. “So please help us win this fantastic award by interacting about the awards on social media. We can’t do this without you – the judges need to see that people love the town as much as we do for us to stand a chance! Use the hashtag #GBHighSt on social media to join in the conversation.” People have been offering their support to the town already: “If there was ever a place that deserve a #GBHighSt award for collaboration & making it happen it’s Helmsley” - Tina Boden, Enterprise Rockers. Members of the public are asked to support the bid on social media by using the hashtag #GBHighSt in reference to Helmsley, and photos,
videos and comments are welcomed via the VisitHelmsley Facebook page www.facebook.com/ VisitHelmsley and Twitter account @VisitHelmsley. If Helmsley is lucky enough to be shortlisted, people will be able vote for the town via the Great British High Street website www. thegreatbritishhighsteet.co.uk.

KITCHEN & BEDROOM DESIGNS TO SUIT YOU
Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected too.
T
he people who are best qualified to speak for the benefits of Instyle Kitchens and Bedrooms are its customers. In fact, owner Gary Langley says more than 80 per cent of his customers come through referrals from their family, friends and neighbours. For example, James and Heather, from Wiggington, write: “You made the experience stress-free and were a great help from designing the kitchen right up until it was installed. Your team of installers were first rate and I couldn’t fault them one bit... The end result is exactly what we

wanted and more. The quality of the kitchen is excellent and I would not hesitate to recommend you to anyone.” Gary said: “Often, someone looking for a new kitchen visits us while they’re shopping around, but they place their order with us, because once they’ve mentioned to their family and friends they had a look at Instyle, people tell them ‘You must go with Instyle – they did my kitchen, my neighbours’ kitchen, my aunty’s kitchen’...” A kitchen is a long-term investment – but Instyle has received repeat business from some customers. Gary added: “One lady had
her second kitchen from us, because she moved house and wanted exactly the same kitchen as she’d had before. The kitchen in her new house was fine, it was only ten years old, but she said she couldn’t do with anything less than we’d fitted for her before.” After 25 years of trading, Instyle Kitchens & Bedrooms has grown from a one-man band fitting one kitchen a month, to a six-strong team designing and installing three kitchens a week, plus bedrooms and P.V.C. windows. Their extensive contacts throughout the industry mean they can source

ANNIVERSARY SALE UPTO 50% OFF just about any kitchen you may have seen and enables them to offer one of the widest choices of styles and designs in Yorkshire. Gary said: “Some showrooms are a bit more limited because they are tied into one manufacturer – but we deal with around 20. We have more than 200 different kitchen styles available to our customers. “Not only can we find just about any kitchen you might have seen, it will cost a lot less than you expected, too.” The experienced and skilled team make the design, planning and installation of a new kitchen a completely stress-free experience. After a visit to their wellestablished showroom in Haxby, Instyle’s experts organise the entire project from start to finish. The process begins with a visit from Instyle’s designer Paul Streicher, who will listen to the customer and add lots of creative ideas to plan a kitchen that fits perfectly with their ideas, personality and home. A CAD (computer-aided design) will be produced, helping the customer visualise the end result. Around 90% of kitchens are completed within a week – granite work surfaces or extensive refits are the only exceptions. Although a new kitchen is a big
investment, Instyle consistently beats its competitors on price – customers often ring up to double check Gary and his team haven’t made a mistake on the quote. But if money is tight, an Instyle facelift can freshen up a tiredout kitchen for an excellent price. Gary said: “New cupboard doors, worktops and flooring can give the feel of a new kitchen for a fraction of the cost. We are completely flexible; even if someone just wants a new sink, we’ll work with them to give them what they want. “We’ve found we don’t need to use any pressurising sales tactics, we just make sure we provide exactly what the

NEW PRESIDENT FOR BAND
T
om NaylorLeyland, of Fitzwilliam Estate Company, has kindly agreed to be the new President of the Malton White Star Band. Tom has been a keen supporter of the Band since the inception of the Malton Food Festival and Malton Monthly Food Market, about 5 years ago. Both the Estate Company and the Community Interest Company (CIC) have favoured the Band in many ways: use of the Town Hall for an exhibition; grants for new instruments and the purchase of a gazebo to serve as a bandstand when the weather is overcast. Cliff Hicks, Band MD, stated that the Band is delighted to have Tom as the new President. It was decided, after the passing of Stan Johnson (President for over
20 years) that the Band would follow its Constitution and appoint a new person to the post. Tom is a well known figure and has certainly made his mark in the town, bringing vitality and vision with regard to future projects. We look forward to many years in partnership.

A 5 STAR SERVICE
CUSTOMER RATING
FROM YOUR LOCAL LOG SUPPLIER Dalby Firewood :: Logo 1
A
s one of the UK’s most reputable suppliers of kiln-dried ash and seasoned hardwood logs, Dalby Firewood consistently supplies top-grade timber to their customers with their friendly, efficient service. All of the timber bought by Dalby Firewood is Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) certified, ensuring the ongoing quality of their products. Dalby Firewood is also registered with HETAS. The FSC promotes environmentally appropriate, socially beneficial, and economically viable management of the world’s forests, while HETAS is the official body recognised by the Government and approves biomass and solid fuel heating appliances, fuels and services. Joseph Woodhead, owner of Dalby Firewood, based at Low Marishes between Malton and Pickering, said: “We deliver to London, Leeds, Hull and all over the UK from our North Yorkshire base and delivery is FREE to York, Scarborough, Malton, Pickering, Driffield, Whitby, Filey, Bridlington, Helmsley and surrounding areas. “Our online reviews make us the highest rated firewood in the UK. We’ve received an overwhelmingly positive response with over 90% of reviewers (278 out of 307) giving us a 5 star rating. Simply search for us on Google to read more.” 24 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
with a clean, bright flame. No seasoning, no roaring fire! “Our hardwood logs - eucalyptus, ash, birch and beech - are supplied and stored separately ensuring our customers receive the best quality logs for their purposes.”
Over 90% of 307 reviewers gave us a 5 star rating Every last log is sustainably sourced and seasoned. Dalby Firewood tests for moisture before despatch, giving perfect burn quality. With these thorough quality checks, their firewood is delivered bone-dry and ready to burn. But why is seasoning so crucial to timber quality? Joseph explained: “Seasoning means drying the wood out until it’s in prime burning condition. Freshly felled and chopped hardwood has about 50% moisture content. Trying to burn wood in this condition is harmful to the environment because it produces creosote, which can cause chimney fires.
Delivery is usually within five working days, dependent on location and the time of year as the team are generally busier during the colder months. A member of the Dalby Firewood team contact the customer first to arrange a day and time. Local delivery drop-off vehicles fit down most driveways and the delivery team will leave the logs in the bag without mess or stress. Crate deliveries are also arranged at a time to suit. Their comprehensive website includes details about all their products, including wood crates, bulk bags and nets, kindling and natural firelighters. Visit www.dalbyfirewood.com for more information. Dalby Firewood is open 8am to 6pm, telephone 01653 668 177, or 07824 556 373.
“We season and dry our logs until the moisture content is 20% or less. This makes them 60% more energy efficient than at the time of felling, and guarantees an efficient, carbon neutral fuel that burns Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th October

Denuded Trees
By The Pastoral Poet Gaily they tossed their haughty heads, Through days of sun and brisk showers.
Go Green... ...with Air/Ground source heat pumps or solar thermal energy RENEWABLE HEAT INCENTIVE
A typical 4 bed home could attract the following incentive by installing one of the following renewables Ground source heat pump £28,000 | Air source heat pump £8,400 | Biomass boiler £25,600 | Solar thermal £2,500 all over a seven year period. The above all come with a 7 year warranty Underfloor heating | Oil, Gas & LPG installations
Now they cower in mournful dread Of Winter’s cheerless, blackened hours. From varied greens to harlequin, Cool verdancy to frightened fire. Their borrowings are gathered in; They stand forlorn in scant attire. Motley pennants once aflutter, Patchwork banners that flew aloft; Lay forsaken in the gutter; The toasts of Summer, long since quaffed. Denuded now the trees, and gaunt. The cruel winds will mock and taunt.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Malton, Norton, Kirkbymoorside, Pickering & Helmsley
areas and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Make sure your will is honoured By Yorkshire Riding Wills
Y
ou may have read or heard discussed on Radio 2’s Jeremy Vine show the case of Heather Illot who was awarded a third of her mother’s estate after she had attempted to disinherit her. The 54 year old’s mother could not forgive her for running away to live with her boyfriend at 17 – they later married and had 5 children. Mrs Illot attempted reconciliations - all rebuffed. It seems the High Court Judges didn’t take with the widow’s “unreasonable, capricious and harsh” decision to leave everything to animal charities & nothing to Mrs Illot.
The decision goes against the deeply held belief that you should be able to leave your hard earned estate to whoever you wish. This does not happen everywhere. In France, Spain and Ireland there are fixed heirship shares, and in Scotland children and spouses have legal rights to a portion of the deceased’s estate.
that they’ve had enough already! So much for the freedom and extra money we all look forward to when our children finally leave home. This decision seems to suggest parent responsibility well beyond this point!
Stories like this have made the headlines before. The heiress Gail Posnor left $11.3 million to her three pet Chihuahuas while her son received a miserly $600,000.
Yorkshire Riding Wills always advises clients to write a full explanation if disinheritance is on the agenda, and to at least provide a token gesture rather than nothing at all. It will, however, always be prudent to write a will.
There can be a multitude of reasons why you would want to disinherit your children from fallouts; disagreements; a belief that children should make it on their own; or

HOVINGHAM’S STAR ATTRACTION H
ovingham is one of Ryedale’s prettiest villages, and its monthly Village Market is its star attraction!
And as Christmas approaches, this award-winning event is the ideal place to buy seasonal produce and special gifts. In November and December, there are three chances to buy a wide range of products, starting on Saturday 7th November, followed by a double helping in December on Saturday 5th and Saturday 19th - just in time for the festive feast! Stalls are set up in the Village Hall car park and inside the hall, trading from 10.30am to 1.30pm.
With around 40 stallholders attending each month, from regulars to new arrivals, the main theme is food, glorious food, including fresh vegetables, meat, fish, cheese, pickles, oils, honey, bread, cakes, pastries, beer, wine and lots more. Other stallholders can include leather goods, jewellery and even a family history stand! Caroline Davis, one of the event organisers, says: “We’re all volunteers who organise and set up the market. Local community groups can run the Community Café to help raise funds for their cause. Around £50,000 has been raised so far.”
Caroline continues: “We have a guest stall each month, and we’ve recently introduced the Market Apprentice, supporting a local artisan, currently stonemason Samuel Chapman of SC Stone Sculptures, Stonegrave.” The market takes a rest until February, resuming on Saturday 6th February, and afterwards on the first Saturday every month. Each market has a theme, from healthy eating to honouring the autumn harvest. If you are interested in having stall, then send an email with subject ‘Run Stall’ to themarket@hovingham.org.uk

Let Us Entertain You! T he Charles Dickens (Malton) Society offers a wide range of talks and presentations to suit all ages – from 9 to 95 years!
While some of the content relates directly to Dickens – characters in his novels, women and children in his life, and his contemporaries, other topics include broader aspects of life in Victorian times such as healthcare, education, poverty, prostitution, street children and life in the Workhouse. Whether you’re planning speakers for your group meetings, or looking to enhance the curriculum at your school by bringing in
outside presenters, we’ll be happy to help. Our performances, by experienced members of the Society, are mainly done in period costume. They are informative, factually accurate, sometimes humorous and often with a variety of visual aids.
If you think we can help, please visit our website www. dickenssocietymalton.co.uk, for a full list of what’s on offer or call our secretary, Linda McCarthy, on 01653 698701. We can tailor our talks to meet your needs – you just have to ask! All income from our presentations
goes towards the upkeep of the Counting House Museum in Chancery Lane, Malton, where we are also delighted to welcome special visits and to perform on-site.

KIRKBYMOORSIDE ENVIRONMENT GROUP
IN SEARCH OF THE HARVEST PLUM Apples are not the only fruit. There, I have said it. Although the Kirkby Fruit Project is mainly known for producing apple juice from surplus apples we also take a keen interest in all other fruit grown locally. Late last year I began to hear rumours of a ‘harvest plum’ that used to grow in a hedgerow on the edge of town but might already be extinct because the hedgerows were being cut. According to the stories the fruit was small and sweet and a bright golden yellow. It was known as the harvest plum because it was ripe at about the time that the first harvest was brought in and was the earliest fruit to ripen. Of course despite several people apparently knowing about this fruit the exact whereabouts of the tree was a bit vague. The situation sounded urgent, could we find the tree and graft cuttings from it before it was lost forever? Despite the obvious difficulty of finding an unknown fruit tree, in an unknown location, in winter when there are no leaves, blossom or fruit to give a clue Louise and I set off several times (usually in a howling gale and driving sleet) in search of the elusive tree. Alas our search was in vain. I was beginning to think this tree was the unicorn of the fruit world – lots of people knew about it but no-one had actually seen it. But then came the breakthrough. Early one morning a few weeks ago there was a knock at the door and there stood Louise proudly brandishing a twig and half a dozen small golden fruits, the tree had been found! Our harvest plum is a Mirabelle, better known on the continent than here but it does in fact grow wild in many parts of the UK. Often called the ‘cherry plum’ the fruits have a sweet/ sharp plum flavour and are a real gourmet treat if you find a good one. Sadly this tree is in a perilous state but we are hopeful that over the coming winter we can graft several cuttings onto new rootstock to save our very own Kirkby Mirabelle. After tasting the elusive fruit I can tell you it is worth saving. 72 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

GARDENING
The Nerine – Diamonds are Forever! by Jonathan Wild, Gardener and Consultant and the frantic seed sowing days of spring are but a distant memory, so it rests on the bulbs to add that autumnal frisson of horticultural excitement. So I must let you in on a secret, and my most favouritist plant ever, the Nerine, more commonly known as the Diamond Lily.
I
know it may well be October by the time you read this but I really am a great fan of September – not only can I add another candle to my birthday cake on the 21st (don’t forget!) but it also marks the start of the bulb season. The days are getting shorter
The Nerine hails from the Rainbow Nation of South Africa. Usefully, they flower from August to December in the UK when there’s not too much else to add a bit of colour to the garden. I’ve had a long standing love affair with this plant and I can even remember ordering my very first bulbs of Nerine bowdenii,
the hardiest and most popular species. I got them from an advert in the Amateur Gardening magazine back in the days when I was still a spotty youth. Many horticultural generations later, their progeny will be flowering as usual in the middle of September. In the garden they like a sunny spot where their stunning pink flowers will last for up to four weeks. Have a look around garden centres and you may still be in luck; hopefully you can treat yourself to a pot or two of these beauties – trust me on this, you won’t be disappointed! I still can’t quite put my finger on what I find so intriguing about this plant. It only flowers once a year, doesn’t have any scent and the >>

>> more interesting hybrids of Nerine sarniensis are a bit tricky to propagate as they insist on growing during our winter. Maybe it’s something to do with the quality of the flowers and the way that they sparkle in the sun, or the fact that they are relatively easy to hybridise, giving everyone a decent chance of raising a beautiful new Nerine hybrid! If you’ve got a frost-free greenhouse or conservatory and you want a bit of a gardening adventure, then can I suggest you have a look at Nicholas de Rothschild’s website www.nerines.com and take a gander at some of the fantastic new hybrids that are available? Just by buying one or two bulbs you will derive years of pleasure and the bulbs will also quickly multiply, greatly increasing your investment in a few years’ time. It couldn’t be more simple to grow them either; plant them in relatively small pots in a sandy, free draining compost and put them in a sunny position. The plants will be dormant during the summer months ( so there are no worries about watering when you’re on your summer hols!) and they will start flowering from late August until Christmas. As long as the leaves don’t get frost damaged, they’ll grow perfectly well in an unheated conservatory – what could be easier?

RETIREMENT - THE END OF A JOURNEY OR JUST THE BEGINNING?
T
here are two ways of looking at retirement - through the rear view mirror at what we leave behind or through the windscreen at the road ahead, with all those blind bends. The second view is the one we can do something about, even with the many uncertainties of this firsttime experience. It’s not what we are retiring FROM that matters but what we are retiring TO. Many retirees are concerned about leaving friends behind, how to fill their time, how to continue making a worthwhile contribution in life. Volunteering is an option but there are concerns about being too tied down and losing our new found freedom. Some fear that volunteering may create extra personal costs - just when income is dropping. And how do we choose which good cause to support without feeling under an obligation to commit ourselves? Will our contribution be truly important, valued, effective and enjoyable?
GROWING RURAL ISOLATION
One local charity that is expanding to meet a growing and important local need is Ryedale Community Transport who help residents with transport problems to get out and about again. Many local residents cannot use public transport. Some services are being cut; some do not start or finish where and when needed; some may be unsuitable for those with mobility problems. This can mean isolation and loneliness - or even moving from a long cherished home and community to somewhere with more local facilities but with no friends or family. RCT takes local residents to social and family functions, on shopping trips or to medical appointments, helping them to remain in their own communities and to maintain their independence. RCT has mini-buses and cars for both able-bodied and disabled passengers - plus 50 volunteers who use their own cars. And now they need even more volunteers to meet rising demand. Comments from passengers underline just how important and appreciated this service is.
(Picture by kind permission of the Gazette and Herald)
One passenger summed it all up: “By getting me out and about again, your volunteers have given me back my independence.” The length of time their volunteers stay with them proves just how enjoyable and satisfying RCT drivers find their role.
HE PLAYED CRICKET FOR ENGLAND WOMEN Volunteers meet a lot of people and make new friends - interesting people like the man who flew a glider full of troops into Normandy on D-Day or the only man to play in England’s National Women’s Cricket team.
And RCT volunteers themselves continue to get out and about in this beautiful area! They are not tied to regular trips, choosing to give as much or as little time as they wish - when it suits them. They also value the mileage expenses that contribute to the cost keeping their own cars. The only requirements are common sense and a wish to help the Ryedale community (mini-bus drivers also need to be MIDAS qualified). There is absolutely no pressure to join and potential volunteers are offered the opportunity go out with an experienced driver before making any decision.
Anyone who feels that they might like to know more can check the RCT website www.ryedalect.org or call them on 01653 699059. www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 77

5TH - 9TH OCTOBER

owever difficult it is to think about, everyone should make a will if they are not to leave a legacy of problems for their family. You could do this at a special rate – and at the same time support seven worthwhile local charities. A number of solicitors in Ryedale are giving their services free during will week which this year is 5 – 9 October and will write your will in return for a donation to Ryedale Charities Together. There is a minimum amount for this, but if you wish to give more, we very much appreciate your help and support. If you are thinking of making or up-dating your will, we ask that you think of disadvantaged
people in Ryedale. You could help by leaving a legacy to a local charity.
How to take part in the scheme All you need to do is contact one of the solicitors listed below, during will week, to book an appointment, quoting ‘Ryedale Charities Will Week’. Appointments must be booked in Will Week – but you can make an appointment for any time at a later date that suits you and your solicitor. Please note, if the will is more complex than normal, solicitors may have to make some charge for the additional work. You need to give a donation to Ryedale Charities Together. The minimum amount for this is £90 for a single person and £150 for a couple.

TENNIS BALLS CAN BE A RISK TO YOUR PET
STATION TION HOUSE VETS Equine & Small Animal
By Ellie Kift, Student Veterinary Nurse at Station House Vets Canine dental health can be overlooked and go unnoticed. One item that may not come across as damaging to your dog’s teeth is the tennis ball. Lots of dogs love to play and chew their tennis balls and, although a fun and inexpensive toy, the results can be expensive. Most owners are aware of the potential choking hazard a tennis ball can present to a large breed dog. Yet the outer material layer of a tennis ball is durable for daily use on a tennis court surface. So when your dog uses the ball, dirt and grit get ingrained into the outer fibres causing the ball to be even more abrasive. So while your pooch plays, the tennis ball can affect the sharpness of their teeth, called ‘blunting’. If your dog is a serious tennis ball addict then you will see the tips of the teeth are blunted. To avoid this happening, it is advisable to use a smooth ball or dental toy as a replacement to the tennis ball they should love it just as much! When choosing a new ball/toy a good way to test is to see if you can dent it with a fingernail. If so, it’s perfect for your pooch. Regular brushing of your dog’s teeth, a heathy diet and having play time with dental toys and treats can help keep their mouth healthy. If you are concerned about your pet’s teeth please make an appointment to see a vet. Our veterinary nurses can also advise on doggy dental care. So it’s goodbye tennis ball, hello healthy teeth.

Skylar is a lovely, bubbly girl who is very active so will require lots of long walks to keep her happy. She has had an unstable start In life, so still has a few things to learn, an active and under-standing family would be great. She could live with older children and possibly another dog after a successful introduction.
Chase and Romany are very friendly and love each other, they are inseparable! They have been waiting for new homes for a long time now and really deserve that chance. Chase is very friendly, Romany can be a little territorial at times but with the correct handling she is really sweet so a home with older children would be ideal.
Rupert is a lovely, friendly lad who is in desperate need of a place to call home. He is housetrained, doesn’t chew and walks nicely on a lead. He can get over excited so he will need a bit of training to learn some basic manners. He could live with older children and possibly with a older, calm dog after a successful introduction.
Domino came in with his sister and she has now been rehomed. He had a really bad start to life so now deserves a good forever home. He needs a large hutch and run as he can be territorial of his space, he also needs to go to a home with an existing female rabbit for company. He would be best homed with older children.

RYEDALE DOG RESCUE ARE ON A MISSION TO ‘RESCUE, REHABILITATE AND EDUCATE!’ Our aim is to rescue abandoned and unwanted dogs, to rehabilitate them and to find them loving forever homes. But our aim is also to educate and inform the public about the consequences of indiscriminate breeding and buying dogs from puppy farms. Sadly, many people do not realise that by buying dogs from indiscriminate breeders who do not care for the welfare of their dogs, they are contributing to a lifetime of misery for dogs used as breeding machines. On Friday 3rd October RDR will be having a stall at Morrisons in Malton with information about rescue dogs, responsible ownership and keeping dogs healthy and happy. Please come along and have a chat with us. We are happy to answer any questions you have - whether its advice or you just want to know more about us, we look forward to meeting you!

She loves people and has been fine with the dogs she’s met while back with us but does not like cats. Due to her size we would be looking to home her where there are no small children but plenty of space for her to play and have fun. Getting post through the letterbox isn’t as fun as it used to be. Although, occasionally buried between the bills and junk mail, you get a pleasant surprise like an invitation. Isn’t it great to know someone has thought of you, made the effort to buy and write a card, and even bought a stamp and put it in the post, all because they would like the pleasure of your company. It can make my day! If someone has gone to all that trouble, my wife makes every effort to reply with an acceptance card.

MOTORING BMW120d
By Kit Johnson an impressive 185bhp while still managing real world mpg in the high 50s.
W
hen the original BMW 1 Series appeared back in 2004, I was deeply disappointed. It was the replacement for the 3 Series Compact which I’ve always rated for its pert looks and sporty performance. My biggest problem with the 1 Series was the styling; it was just plain ugly from any angle with startled headlights and ungainly proportions. To make matters worse, BMW had stuck to their tradition of a longitudinally mounted engine with rear wheel drive. This meant there was precious little space in the back seats and not much more in the boot. Nor did it deliver a sporting drive despite the fact that the ride was as firm as a Lamborghini. But then the second generation came along and it looked a whole lot more comely and the ride had been sorted out, even if the cabin was still spatially challenged, and it went up in my estimation markedly. The second generation has just had a mid-life facelift so I thought now would be the perfect time to take one for a spin. Visually it’s not wildly different to the previous model. The lights have been tidied up and there’s a new grill but overall it has the understated good looks that BMW does so well. Inside space is still rather tight in the back but the dash looks great, the seats are comfy and the quality of the plastics and general fit and finish is excellent; this car really does feel like a quality piece of kit. The biggest changes have been made to the engines. For the first time the 1.5 litre 3 cylinder diesel from the latest MINI has appeared in a BMW, badged as the 116d. This 114bhp unit is capable of an astonishing 83 mpg on the urban cycle. The 118d, 120d and 125d all use the same 2.0 litre diesel in different states of tune. The 120d I drove kicks out
86 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
On paper it’s a quick car (142mph and 7.1 seconds 0-62) but unfortunately it doesn’t feel sporty to drive; there is no sense of urgency and it’s also noisy with too much diesel clatter – diesels are meant to be felt but not heard. It’s the same story with the handling too, it is composed and predictable and you can carry a lot of speed through the corners but it simply doesn’t encourage you to attack a twisty back road with any kind of enthusiasm. On the plus side, the ride is compliant and well controlled so at least you can tool down a back road in comfort. Ultimately, it actually handles like a front wheel drive car so I can’t see the point in sacrificing all that interior space for a longitudinal engine/ rear wheel drive set up. The 120d is relatively expensive, knocking on the door of £26k before you start adding any options. Surprisingly (to me anyway) the 1 Series is a big seller in the UK, regularly getting into the top ten

However, there are other premium hatchbacks out there, particularly the Audi A3 and Mercedes A Class, and few people would look down their nose at the iconic VW Golf. To my mind, these are all better cars, if only because they also possess the practicality you expect from a family hatch. If you want to spend that kind of money on a BMW family car, I’d suggest you consider the unassailably perfect 3 Series. Car as featured BMW 120d Sport - £25,840 RRP

developing the disease during their lifetime, it’s never been a better time to become breast aware. The solemn fact is that nearly 12,000 people die from breast cancer each year here in the UK. The disease also affects men, although it is less common, with around 400 males diagnosed each year. Factors that might trigger the disease include age as more than 80% of women who develop breast cancer are aged over 50, while in men it can occur after the age of 60. Family history can also a factor, although only around 5% of people diagnosed have inherited the faulty gene. The positive news is that more than 85% of people survive breast cancer beyond five years. A key factor to helping survival is early diagnosis and monthly checks. Visit the website www. breastcancercare.org.uk for hints, tips and advice.

If you want a great evening of entertainment, then this is most definitely the place to come many arrive as strangers and leave as friends! Tickets are on sale from Television House, Pickering on 01751 472847 or by calling one of the organisers on 01751 432811.
