elcome to our October edition.

Working in the media wasn’t my intended choice of career. In a past life I worked as a scientist studying, among other things, cider production and the antioxidant properties of carotenoids! I loved the work but I never was someone who particularly enjoyed working alone in a laboratory – and I haven’t drunk cider since! Stumbling into publishing just over 12 years ago it was the best move I ever made. I’m happier being out and about, chatting to people and getting to know what’s going on and, of course, the fact that the Handy Mag has helped so many businesses to grow is a big bonus. Changing careers has become much more common in that generation called the ‘Millennials’ (those born between 1980s to 2000). They might have a reputation for being way too attached to their iPhones, but they seem to find it much easier to move around jobs and careers. It’s something I’ve heard myself telling my children – no decision is final and, it might not be easy, but you can always change. This year my son has swung from going to university straight after school, having a year out, jobs, travelling and back again. After a brilliant set of exam results, he’s decided to go to university. We’re very proud of him and it’s reassuring that he has taken so many turns to come to his decision. I can’t say I’m looking forward to the empty nest but I’m looking forward to having more time to enjoy working on the Handy Mags! Poetry and Song with Mandy Coe and The Mile Roses

yedale Book Festival is planning a fantastic evening celebrating the sung and spoken word on Friday October 6 at The Milton Rooms in Malton. The evening will feature a contemporary British folk trio - with a nod to Nashville – and a prize-winning performance poet from across the Pennines and is sure to delight both folk fans and supporters of the spoken word. The Mile Roses, featuring Driffield lass Edwina Hayes on vocals and guitar, Kate Bramley on vocals, fiddle and mandolin, and Simon Haworth on vocals, guitar and bass will be performing original songs with close harmonies. Born out of a musical interest in both British folk and the transatlantic connections to new country and Americana, this trio is fast gaining a reputation across the UK folk scene. From toe tapping folk rockabilly to haunting ballads, this trio have toured worldwide as independent musicians but this new collaboration is guaranteed to leave audiences with smiles on their faces. The Mile Roses will be joined by performance poet and artist Mandy Coe, who will also be sharing a short selection of her music- inspired poems. She has published six books including thee collections of poetry for adults and one for children and her work has been featured on BBC television and radio.

Pickering Pre-School Playgroup, which runs from the Parish Hall, Hallgarth, celebrated its 50th Anniversary in 2015. We work to the Early Years Foundation Stage statutory framework, and are Ofsted registered, graded GOOD in 2014.

t’s a funny old thing, this Church of England, the church in the place. Like the monarchy, it’s been around for ages. And like the monarchy, it’s starting to change. Vicars no longer expect to do everything, simply because they can’t. They advise and support the ministry of churchgoers who share their faith with children and young people and those currently not church members. They go to where people are, not expecting them to come to church on Sundays. Terms like ‘café church’, ‘messy church’, and many different activities are now being introduced, and at different times of the week, to respond to people’s spirituality, to meet their needs for support, help and information. Religious expression is more about groups of people searching for God’s love in the ordinary events of life and death in their neighbourhoods, rather than in the rituals of institutions and churches. Mission is not defined by where you are but by sharing and proclaiming wherever you happen to be. Pilgrimage with God is a pilgrimage with God’s people in their struggle for freedom from all the social, political and economic forces which deny their dignity, diminish them and contribute to their despair. And yes, that applies as much to Britain as it does in the developing nations. As Michael Marten of the Iona Community says; “‘We believe in life before death’ is the context where we are most likely to find God, in interactions with other people, efforts to share what we can, and in resisting those that would deny life in all its fullness to everyone.” The modern vicar knows that the role of the priest is to assist the mission of the church, and not to do it her/himself. And the missioners? That’s you and me when we explore our spirituality and recognise our responsibilities to other people.

Anyone who struggles to use conventional public transport can use Ring&Ride by becoming a member – you just need to live in the Malton and Norton catchment area. The service caters for people of any age who have difficulty travelling and our vehicles are wheelchair accessible. Our friendly, experienced drivers are there to help you to get to where you need to be. Eligible passengers can use the service for popping out to do some shopping, calling at the Post Office, catching up with friends or for healthcare appointments. Our Mission Ryedale Community Transport’s mission is to improve the quality of life for communities by

enabling independence, inclusion and participation through the provision of community transport services where no suitable alternative exists. When did this begin? Did you know that apples float because they are 25% air? Or that in Ancient Greece tossing an apple to a girl was a proposal of marriage and catching it was a response of ‘yes’? Many such myths and stories about apples exist. In Ancient Rome, Pomona was the Goddess of fruit trees, especially of apple trees, and was also known as the “Apple Mother”. In more modern times it’s said that if you want to ensure true happiness in your relationship, you should cut an apple in half and share it with your loved one. Well, I can’t think of a better reason to eat an apple than that! But did you also know there are far more varieties than you ever see in the supermarket? Here at Helmsley Walled Garden we have over a hundred apple trees and 92 named varieties. Many have wonderful names such as Dogsnout, Catshead, Flower of the town, Khoroshavka alaya and Bloody Ploughman; so named because the ploughman was shot for stealing apples. The bag of apples he’d collected were given to his widow. In disgust she threw them on to the rubbish heap and the first tree sprouted from there. If you cut a Bloody Ploughman open the flesh inside is streaked with red. We turn our apples into juice and Amazing Apple Day is a chance for you to come and taste and buy some of the varieties. You can follow our family-friendly apple trail, bob for apples, enjoy apple dishes in The Vine House café and see our apples being juiced. So join us on 21st October in a celebration of all things apple.

Burton Agnes Hall hosts bustling, seasonal street fair

At the end of October, Burton Agnes Hall will host its annual Michaelmas Fair, which celebrates the traditional feast of St. Michael, and marks the end of the farming year. During the weekend of the 28th-29th October, the fair offers stunning, hand crafted gifts and delicious local produce in the impressive grounds of the hall. A huge variety of quality stalls will offer something for everyone, providing fairgoers with a wonderful opportunity to make an early start with Christmas shopping! A traditional fair organ will billow out tunes to entertain visitors, traditional street performances include sword dancing and Morris dancing, and fairground rides will run throughout the weekend. Set amongst the stalls, visitors will find Burton Agnes Hall’s courtyard shops. The Garden Shop and the Gift Shop will offer unusual gifts, souvenirs and seasonal produce. Delicious treats await visitors in the cafe, where freshly prepared meals, warming drinks and soups and cakes will be served throughout the weekend.

Acupuncture

by Catriona Moon BSc(Hons) BVSc CertAVP(EP) MRCVS Station House Vets Acupuncture is a complementary medicine and involves inserting fine, solid needles into the body for pain relief or, in some cases, to help the body deal with other diseases. How does acupuncture work? The needles block the pain messages and encourage the brain and central nervous system to produce more of the body’s natural painkillers. Acupuncture may help to reset the body’s normal functioning in nonpainful conditions. Will it hurt my pet? Most of the time they accept the fine needles very well and often become relaxed and sleepy during treatment. Sedation is not often required. Perhaps surprisingly, cats and rabbits often accept acupuncture treatment very well. How often would my pet be treated? The usual course is once a week for four weeks. After this, depending on the condition and response to the initial course, we work out a plan that usually involves tapering off the treatment so that the effect is maintained for as long as possible. Is acupuncture safe? Acupuncture is very safe, in the right hands. Legally it must be performed by a veterinary surgeon. There are a few cases when we would be very cautious about using acupuncture.

What about response? Your pet may show 1 of 3 responses to treatment: 1. They may seem a bit stiffer or more uncomfortable. This means that the dose was a bit too much, but also shows that they should respond to treatment. After a day or two they will improve again and should be better than before. However, you must tell your vet so that they can adjust the treatment next time. 2. You may see no response. This is always disappointing but does not mean your pet will not respond; it may just be that they will take a little longer or that their improvement after the first treatment was too brief for you to see. We cannot say that they will not respond until after the fourth treatment. Not all animals or humans are acupuncture “responders”, but about 80% will be. 3. You may see an improvement which may occur anytime in the 3 days after treatment. The signs that we are trying to treat may then return before the next treatment, but this is fine. After each subsequent treatment the effects should last for longer, so that your pet may not need treatments for some time. What kinds of conditions are treated? Pain is the most common indication for acupuncture. In human medicine, there is good scientific evidence for the use of acupuncture for lower back pain and knee osteoarthritis. Functional conditions such as constipation in cats and irritable bowel type problems in dogs may also respond. And after the treatment? It’s not uncommon for pets to go home and sleep soundly for a long time. This is a good sign and shows that your pet will probably respond well to acupuncture. Do not worry if they are not sleepy – this does not mean that they will not respond. Sometimes your pet may seem a little more euphoric than usual; this is also a good sign, but keep them quiet for the rest of the day or they may overdo things. Otherwise treat your pet normally. Don’t change exercise, diet or medication unless it has been discussed with your vet.

other dogs previously. He loves human company and recently had a night out at the pub with some of the RDR trustees! He is a strong dog but walks well on his harness, knows basic commands and is attentive to his human companions. Monty is fully vaccinated and castrated and needs someone willing to spend time with him so he can reach his full potential.
