W
elcome to the September edition. As our summer ends and we return from our holiday breaks, extravagant or low-key, local or far away, we are clearly refreshed and looking to make tracks with a rush of local events. Especially with our choirs it seems! There are three this month staging concerts for you to go to - Harmonia Ladies Choir in Helmsley raising money for Ryedale Special Families, Malton Male Voice Choir at the Milton Rooms for their Annual Concert and Stamford Bridge Singers on tour. I have to admit to really enjoying a good sing – though I’m not sure my family and dogs share in my enthusiasm! With an eye to our younger readers, we welcome a new columnist to the Handy Mag. Emily, a local teenager, is going to be writing a monthly piece for the
magazine as part of her fund raising activities for a trip to Kenya next year to help build schools in rural areas. She is a very busy person as you can read from her column on page 21. If you have any comments about the magazine please send them to me at the email address below. Its always good to know how people use the magazine and I’m always keen to improve it if improvement is necessary! Well done to Mrs Claire Saul of Norton for winning the July competition. Until next month…

FOOD
Meals in Minutes Perfect for outdoor eating, this filling Mediterranean flavoured portable feast makes a change from the usual sandwiches and sausage rolls.
Ser v Fou es r
Picnic Loaf
• To serve 4 people, you’ll need a large round, oval or oblong fresh crusty loaf. Slice the top off and scoop out the inside of the loaf, leaving a 1cm (1/2in) thick wall. • Brush the inside wall of the loaf with some good quality olive oil. For extra flavour spread a thin layer of red or green pesto sauce or sun dried tomato paste inside the loaf. • Choose a colourful selection of 3-4 fillings. Cold chicken, smoked ham, salami, cheese, firm sliced tomatoes, roasted vegetables (such as peppers, courgettes or aubergines), baby spinach leaves or fresh herbs like parsley and basil are all ideal. Chopped olives, capers or anchovy fillets will give extra flavour. Avoid watery sliced cucumber and salad leaves as they will make the bread go soggy. • Layer the fillings of your choice in the loaf, packing them down well. Drizzle with a little olive oil as you go and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. • You can make an extra filling layer with the breadcrumbs removed from the loaf by blending them in a food processor for a few seconds with a little olive oil, crushed garlic and fresh basil. • Press the lid on top of the loaf and wrap tightly in foil. Chill in the fridge for 3-4 hrs or overnight. Slice thickly or in wedges to serve.
tion riathe VaKeep kids happy with their own individual versions using small crusty rolls. Fill with layers of mild Cheddar or Edam cheese and wafer thin ham or sliced cold sausages adding a thin layer of pickle or tomato relish. Alternatively, mash a can of drained tuna with some mayonnaise and layer with crisp little gem salad leaves and grated carrot.

HEALTH & LIFESTYLE
Baby
blues
Around 50-80% of new mums get the ‘baby blues’ when they feel, not surprisingly, exhausted, anxious and weepy during the first few days after the birth. This usually disappears without the need for treatment about 10 days after the birth.
Postnatal depression (PND)
If you feel depressed, it’s important to let family and friends know how you feel so that you can get support.
Around 10-15% of women will suffer more severe postnatal depression, sometimes weeks or months after the birth of their baby. About half of cases occur within the first three months, and 75% of cases by six months. These mums experience more powerful and prolonged symptoms of depression such as: • constant weepiness • anxiety, tension • difficulty in bonding with the baby • loss of libido • sleep disturbances, restlessness • exhaustion • feeling isolated or living in a ‘bubble’ • feelings of guilt and resentment. Many women do not realise they are suffering from postnatal depression and battle on without getting the help they need. It is often women who have high expectations of themselves and of motherhood that find the reality of caring for a new
If you feel low or depressed, don’t try to cope on your own and don’t be afraid to ask for help – all new mums need the support of family and friends. Don’t put yourself under pressure to keep the house clean or prepare big meals – rest when your baby sleeps. 18 • info@thehandymag.co.uk
baby hard to cope with. If you feel depressed, it’s important to let family and friends know how you feel so that you can get support. Your GP can discuss treatment options with you, such as counselling and anti-depressants and direct you to local mothers’ groups which can be of enormous support to new mums.
Puerperal Psychosis
A very small percentage of women (between one and three in every 1,000), suffer from puerperal psychosis, which causes severe mental breakdown and may include symptoms such as manic behaviour and hallucinations. Treatment options include hospitalisation, drugs and counselling.
Getting support
Being at home with a new baby that seems to need constant feeding and changing, who takes all your attention and leaves you feeling exhausted, can be an isolating experience. Take up any offers of help and support from friends and family. If you feel you are not coping, always talk to your GP or health visitor.
If you feel you are not coping, talk to your health visitor or GP – and don’t feel embarrassed or ashamed that you’re not handling motherhood as well as other mums seem to be. Talk to other mums – you’ll find they’re probably feeling just as overwhelmed as you are.
Despite greater awareness of PND, it’s thought that only about half of mothers who need help are getting it. So don’t keep your feelings to yourself – the sooner you talk about it, the quicker you can get support and, if needed, treatment.

Back to school for a rest...?! Our new column from local teenager Emily
H
...cinema virus that kills within days. As the fast-moving epidemic grows, the worldwide medical community races to find a cure and control the panic that spreads faster than the virus itself. At the same time, ordinary people struggle to survive in a society coming apart. Director: Steven Soderbergh. Film cast: Gwyneth Paltrow, Jude Law, Kate Winslet, Laurence Fishburne, Marion Cotillard
The Adventures of Tintin: Secret of the Unicorn Directed by Steven Spielberg from a screenplay by Steven Moffat and Edgar Wright & Joe Cornish. Starring Jamie Bell (Billy Elliot) as Tintin, the intrepid young reporter whose relentless pursuit of a good story thrusts him into a world of high adventure, and Daniel Craig as the nefarious Red Rackham.
i, my name is Emily and I am going to be writing a new monthly column for the Handy Mag. It’s quickly coming to the end of the summer holidays, and it’ll be back to the monotonous school routine before you know it. If, like me, you are going back into year 11 then I wish you luck in all of your upcoming exams, if not then enjoy it whilst you can - and make the most of it! Most people go back to school either feeling refreshed from a long busy holiday and ready for working, or feeling flat having just spent their annual break sat around with little to do other than update their facebook page. Not me. I have spent the majority of my holidays rushing from Pony Camp, to a weekend away with a friend, down to Granny’s, back home for about 25 minutes (in which time I am expected to unpack and re-pack!), to another friend’s house and then straight up to Northumberland for a camping trip! Phew... My return to school will be a chance to regain normality, do something constructive and get the motivation to fit in a few dog walks. For those of you who have a canine companion, you will know how much more appealing a hot drink sat by the computer is, when the alternative is taking the dog out for a walk on a typical rainy Yorkshire summer’s day. This is why I advise you now, if it is a warm day (which are becoming more and more rare) then either step outside with a friend, go to the beach with the family or go on the internet and search for walks you can do. And take the dog with you! Good luck back at school; and see you next month,
E m ily

HOMES & GARDENS A conservatory extends summer through to winter and creates the perfect link between the house and the garden. Katherine Sorrell looks at ways to make your conservatory a space that’s functional, beautiful and useable all year round.
A room for all seasons B
uilding a conservatory is one of the most popular home improvements. But aside from the question of whether it will add value to your property, will it add value to your life? A good place to start is with the overall colour scheme. By painting the walls the same colour as the adjacent room, you’ll ensure that the conservatory really feels like part of your home, rather than a last-minute addition. Use the floor, too, as a bridge between the conservatory and the house. Tiled, slate, stone and terracotta floors are beautiful but tend to be rather cold and hard underfoot, so it would be a great idea to scatter one or two rugs to add instant warmth and character, perhaps in a colour used in the next room so as to create a visual link. With the background colours, textures and patterns established, it’s time to consider the key pieces of furniture – probably a comfortable sofa and some armchairs, perhaps a dining table and chairs – and soft furnishings. Many people choose rattan furniture for a conservatory, and it can look fabulous, adding a touch of exotic, Far Eastern style to the room. To emphasise this look, accessorise with wooden boxes with large brass handles (handy for coffee tables), woven baskets, carvedstone buddhas or elephants, paper lanterns and carved-wood mirrors. For blinds, cushions and throws, choose fabrics in sand, 28 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

mustard, deep red, orange and earthy brown. Alternatively, you could aim for a cool, New England look by teaming white-painted rattan with cottons and linens in plains and checks, tongue-and-groove cabinetry and simple floor and table lamps with pale fabric shades. Or go for a soft, English country look by adding chintzy cushions, painted ceramics, botanical prints, delicate chandeliers and vases of informally arranged flowers. Another favourite in a conservatory is metal furniture, though it’s best to avoid chairs and tables specifically designed for the garden, as they can look unsophisticated and clumsy; instead, opt for curly, decorative metalwork, which looks really pretty, especially painted in a soft pastel colour. For a more contemporary effect, faux wicker furniture (for both inside and out) now comes in all sorts of vivid colours and surprisingly sculptural shapes, while high-tech fabrics, which resist staining and fading and are water-resistant, allow you to include upholstered furniture – so you could go for long and lean sofas, or European-inspired, modular forms. And there you have it: glamorous or laid back, traditional Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 6th September

or modern, the decoration of your conservatory can reflect your personal style and really make this room an integral part of your home.
All year round
Heating is essential if you plan to use your conservatory in winter, and this is something that’s ideally considered at the planning stage – though a retrofit is always possible. The options are simply to extend your current central heating to the conservatory, placing radiators against the dwarf walls, or to fit underfloor heating, in the form of either warm-water pipes or electric cables. In the summer months, your main consideration will be to keep the conservatory cool enough to be pleasant to sit in. As well as opening windows and vents, you can provide a cool waft of air with a central ceiling fan, and block dazzling sunlight with blinds, which will control the heat in the summer and insulate in the winter. Choose from pleated, roller or roman blinds, vertical and Venetians, wood-weave or simple calico, in colours to suit your décor.

That means a visit to Green’s Malton store gives customers a great chance of discovering a real find for the home. the store. The store offers an “Aladdin’s Cave” experience for browsers, who are welcome to poke around the 12 showrooms over three floors as well as the corridors, basement rooms, and passages, which are all fully stocked with a massive range of furniture. Owner Peter Green and his wife June started the business in 1988, in the warehouse space behind the current store. As Peter and June celebrate their 23 years in Malton, two of their longest-standing members of staff, Andrea and Debbie, will also notch up 20
and nine years respectively working for the company. The Greens slowly expanded the business over the years, taking on the shop space they have now, and winning the loyalty of lots of customers across the region and even across the generations – making it something of a town centre institution. Peter said: “We offer a really good experience of a traditional family firm, and the loyalty goes both ways. A lot of furniture retailers have closed over the years, with customers losing their deposits, but we know our customer service and value for money has kept us afloat. “We have a very big local customer base. In fact, I have had customers come in for beds for their children who remember coming here for furniture as a child with their own parents.” Greens’ customers choose directly from the showroom, with the confidence that what they see is quite literally what

store they get. Furthermore, there is no long wait for the furniture to be made to order – your items will be with you within a few days. Much of Greens’ stock is showroom quality, but as it is dates back to last season or is an end-of-line range, customers can snap it up for as low as half the original cost. Other items may be seconds with some clearly advertised imperfections – which means customers know exactly what they’re buying and why it is discounted.
“We offer a really good experience of a traditional family firm, and the loyalty goes both ways.” Peter said: “For example, when beds are returned, sometimes they are scuffed on the corner when the deliverymen drag them down the lorry. They then come to us, and we can sell them at half price – but they’re still wonderful, top quality beds.” Peter Green buys all the
stock personally, having built up a huge network of businesses, auctions and showrooms which he visits on a regular basis. His knowledge and experience in buying furniture means customers benefit from being able to get the latest styles very soon, often at less than the high street stores’ own sale prices. So for a massive range of good quality, top name brands at half price or less, pay a visit to Greens Furniture on Newgate, Malton, or call 01653 696503.

M
alton-based ladies choir Harmonia is offering its eclectic mix of pop, folk, gospel and show tunes at a concert in aid of Ryedale Special Families on Saturday 24th September at Helmsley Arts Centre. The following week they will join Malton Male Voice Choir for a concert at Saville Street Methodist Church, on Saturday 1st October, to celebrate the church’s bicentennial. It’s the choir’s latest in a string of successful concerts since it was founded in November 2008. Its biggest concert so far took place in April this year, alongside Malton Male Voice Choir again – which proved so popular it led to a boost in membership. Founder Alison Davis, a singing teacher who works in schools across the area, said: “I launched Harmonia to give local women the chance to enjoy singing popular tunes. “There are some great choirs in the area who tend to perform more classical styles of music. I thought it would be nice to offer something different.” The choir’s unique appeal stems from its variety – mem-
bers’ ages range from girls of 15 right up to women in their 70s, with widely different backgrounds, experience and voices. Also, the choir learns all the tunes and the words by heart, so they perform without holding folders or music sheets, which is quite a task for members, but the effect on their look and sound makes it worth the effort! Alison added: “The choir has
a lot of fun, we’re very sociable and a lot of friendships have been made among the members. We work hard, but enjoy ourselves while we’re doing it!” For more information about the concerts or the choir, call Alison on 01653 698561 or email alisondavis1@hotmail.co.uk. The choir will take a break over the winter months and rehearsals will start again in March 2012.

Planting ahead I love this month, it gives me carte blanche for thinking about something I adore: spring flowering bulbs. Why? Because for best results these spring delights need to be planted in the autumn.
If daffodils and other narcissus are planted whatever you go for, unless you choose the from now onwards, they have a good chance very elite super-pricey bulbs, they’ll represent to grow roots and start to build up energy for superb value for money. They’re very good value, but here’s a shelves, just check flowering times which will word of warning – I always find that the superbe clearly indicated on the pack. September 2011 • issue 70 Where to grow them Try simple daffodils like ‘Carlton’, ‘King Alfred’ or English bluebells grown in random plantings, scattered and then planted where they fall, beneath trees in your garden. They’ll look great and often produce a really good display beneath the outer spread of trees where it may otherwise be difficult to encourage much else to grow. Shrubs and even climbers can also be used for naturalised bulb plantings, but because they’re smaller, grow the more diminutive bulbs such as miniature Narcissus ‘Tete a Tete’, ‘Hawera’, ‘Peeping Tom’, rich blue grape hyacinths or delicate Chinodoxa. On steep banks where gardening is difficult, why not grow masses of bulbs? Planting on the near vertical may be tricky, but once there you can enjoy the display for years to come. Pots or other good-looking containers make great homes for bulbs. If you’ve fallen for anything particularly small or expensive, pots can be the answer and will mean you can enjoy and not lose those tiny spring bulb jewels amongst their larger relatives. Larger planters including tubs and window boxes are brilliant for bulbs too – try a host of golden daffodils in a smart blue pot, some delicate dwarf iris or Iris reticulata in a window box or pot on the front steps where you’ll be able to enjoy their good looks and their subtle perfume. Whichever type of spring bulb you have in mind, and wherever you intend to grow them, start planning and buying now so that they can be in the ground promptly. You can get great Grow Your Own Veg results with Pippa’s unique ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’. Order your veg plants from www.pippagreenwood.com and your garden-ready plants are delivered in May at a great time for planting. What makes it unique is that Pippa will email you every week about what you’re growing – lots of tips and help, ensuring great results. It’s great value with various pack sizes available, eg up to 66 plants plus 6 packets of seed for just £39.00, plus that weekly advice.

Some of the Best Short stories Want to read more but never seem able to find the time? Our collection of fantastic short story books features something for everyone – the perfect way to become involved in a highimpact or touching tale, when all you have is twenty minutes. Collected Short Stories
by Roald Dahl A complete collection of dark, twisted and fantastically written short stories, this is perfect for teenagers and adults. With over fifty lingering tales, this book contains favourites such as ‘Lamb to the Slaughter’, where a guilty wife attempts to conceal the murder of her husband by feeding the only evidence to the police. Genius!
Sleep
by Roddy Doyle For an introduction to this charming Irish writer, Sleep is a lovely text, in which a husband admires his sleeping wife and reflects upon his life with her. Despite the brevity of the tale, Doyle develops strong characters, combining context with emotion to create a softness and affection which is incredible touching.

The Heart of Darkness
by Joseph Conrad Although this is more of a novella, it is one of the greatest short stories: dark, captivating and with a torrent of hidden meaning flowing beneath the surface. Beautifully written and darkly magical, it’s a must-read.
The Metamorphosis
by Franz Kafka This wonderful story tells the tale of Gregor Samsa, who one day wakes up to find that he has turned into an insect. Exploring the themes of man and the natural world, alienation and morality, this tale is darkly funny and brilliantly written.
Oscar Wilde’s Stories for all Ages
by Oscar Wilde and Stephen Fry This wonderful collection combines some of the best tales of Oscar Wilde, presented in a beautifully illustrated book, featuring a foreword and introduction to each story by his biggest fan, Stephen Fry. For first time visitors to Wilde’s work, ‘The Selfish Giant’ is a must-read, telling the enchanting story of a giant who lives perpetually in Winter, until he allows children into his castle and his heart. 44 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Bringing affordable mobility to you
R
ecognising a gap in the market for more reasonably priced mobility products, Michael Verby set up MV Mobility in March 2003. Since then, MV Mobility has become one of the top 30 mobility companies in the country, offering a wide range of Medical Equipment, Components, Accessories and Consumables and Medical or Surgical Supplies. What sets MV Mobility apart from their well-established, nationally based competitors is their ability to bring their services to the customer via their innovative Mobile Showroom, which allows them to match the products to your needs. Because his customers are so dependent on his speciality products and services, Michael firmly believes that they should be fully demonstrated and tested in situ, before making any decision. Michael advises, “To ensure that the product you choose is safe, comfortable and easy to use for all the users or carers involved, we bring them to your home. That way you can see our full range, try them out in the environment in which they will be used and benefit from the advice and experience of our experienced team – all in the comfort of your own home, avoiding the inconvenience
and upset of having to travel to a showroom.” Finding you the right product at a reasonable price isn’t the only factor setting MV Mobility apart from the competition. The high quality products supplied guarantee the highest levels of performance but MV Mobility’s after sales service and warranties provide much needed peace of mind for the users of these specialist products as well as their families and carers. Michael is genuinely dedicated to providing a good range of quality mobility products to enhance your life and ensures that his 6-strong team is equally motivated to achieve the same goal. With no premises and limited overheads, Michael is able to keep the prices of his products affordable. To further help customers manage costs, MV Mobility offers a partexchange scheme for anyone with equipment to replace and finance arrangements are available on request. Continuing to provide accessible, cost-effective products for his customers is a priority for local businessman Michael who prides himself on offering a comprehensive, reliable service where it’s needed most. 0% FINANCE AVAILABLE WRITTEN DETAILS UPON REQUEST All major credit cards accepted

Lungworm A
s I’m writing this, the summer holidays are just beginning and people are venturing off on their travels. One of the advantages of a ‘staycation’ the UK has to be the ease of taking pets, especially dogs, along with you. When travelling abroad we consider the possibility of diseases that are not common at home, both for ourselves and our pets. But what about when we travel to different parts of our own country? One such condition that affects our dogs is lungworm, caused by the parasite Angiostrongylus vasorum. Relatively new to the UK, Lungworm is becoming more prevalent, particularly in the south and south west of the country and south Wales. It is currently rarely seen in Yorkshire but could become more widespread in the future. The adult worms live in the right side of the heart and the blood vessels around it, where they lay their eggs. The larvae hatch out and move into the lungs, from where they are coughed up, swallowed by the dog and then shed in the faeces. Once in the faeces, slugs and snails eat the larvae which then undergo further development in these intermediate hosts before being transferred back into dogs when either the slug or snail is eaten or by consumption of their slime. The larvae then burrow through the gut wall and end up travelling in the bloodstream back to the heart and pulmonary vessels to start the whole lifecycle all over again. The whole process takes just 1-2 months. Dogs can accidently eat slugs and snails by drinking from puddles or outside water bowls. Urban foxes are also hosts for lungworm. A further possibility for spread is via frogs
which eat the larvae from slugs and carry them within their systems until they themselves are eaten by a dog or fox. Any dog can become infected with lungworm but it is probably more common in young dogs, less than 2 years of age, and it can be fatal if left untreated.
Symptoms
When a dog is infected with lungworm they can show symptoms in 3 different ways, 1. Cardio-respiratory- signs you would see are coughing, difficulty breathing, breathing faster than normal or becoming breathless more easily than normal on walks. 2. Coagulopathies- this is where the blood doesn’t clot properly and you would see bleeding into the skin, excessive bruising, prolonged bleeding from wounds, nose bleeds, pale mucous membranes or bleeding into the eye. 3. Neurological- this is involving the nervous system and you would see behavioural changes, fits, paralysis, inco-ordination or spinal pain. The presenting signs of a dog with lungworm infection are varied and can affect a lot of different organ systems in the body, making diagnosing lungworm quite tricky. The other difficulty is that their isn’t one specific diagnostic test for the condition. Diagnosis is usually based on a mixture of the presenting signs and history along with diagnostic tests including blood samples, x rays and looking for the larvae either in washes from the lungs or in faecal samples.
Treatment
There are 2 main ways to treat lungworm, one with a ‘spot-on’ on the back of the neck and the other with a course of worming granules given over 7 days. The spot-on is a one off treatment with only a small number of dogs needing a second treatment, it also protects against several other parasites, including fleas, ear mites, lice and mites and some types of worms. It is also the mainstay of lungworm prevention when applied every 4 weeks Other ways in which to minimise the risk of your dog picking up lungworm are to clean up faeces as soon as possible and reduce the likelihood of your dog coming into contact with slugs and snails and their slime trails. This can be done by not letting your dog drink from puddles or dirty water bowls outside and keeping paths and patios clear of slime trails and all toys inside the house when not in use. Luckily in Yorkshire we are yet to have a serious problem with lungworm but with changes in climate and increases in travelling its still something we need to be aware of. MOTORING
September 2011 • issue 70 What is it? Nissan would have you believe it’s revolutionary. It’s the first fiveseater, all-electric car in production, producing zero emissions and costing just £2 to ‘fill up’. The benefits don’t end there either. Buyers enjoy zero road tax and company car drivers won’t be clobbered by any Benefit in Kind. That means someone driving a 1.6-litre diesel Ford Focus, paying £4,000 company car tax per year, would see that amount back in their pay packets. What’s under the bonnet? A big fat electric motor. Flip the catch, show any non petrolhead the unit and most will be convinced it’s a standard engine – to the uninitiated it certainly looks that way. It’s the fat power cables that give the game away. That motor produces 108bhp but it’s the big dollop of 280Nm of torque, available immediately, which really makes the
difference. That’s equivalent to a Porsche Boxster and certainly makes the Leaf feel sprightly enough. What’s the spec like? Nissan made little noise about spec on the launch, concentrating more on the technology, but customers will be pleased to hear there’s lots to entertain. Headliners include sat nav and reversing camera as standard, as well as central locking, alloys, climate control, a CD player and electric windows and mirrors. The only option is a solar panel on the spoiler that tops up the 12v battery. That costs £250. What’s it like to drive? Nissan says the Leaf’s range is 109 miles and has calculated 95 per cent of daily car travel is less than 25 miles and the average journey is 8.5 miles. There are two power modes, a normal and an eco. In eco, power is
seriously reduced but the range improved and in normal the Leaf is surprisingly swift. What’s immediately apparent is how quiet the car is and how well it rides over bumps – you forget very quickly you’re driving an electric car. What does the press think of it? Autoblog said the Leaf could possibly be the most impressive car it has driven all year. The Green Car Website loved it and said owners would claw back the higher purchase price with lower running costs. Autocar also said that despite the ‘real world range’ being only about 80 miles it was ‘easy to see its huge potential as a comfortable and practical school run car’. What do we think of it? We like it a lot, but the 26 dealers currently selling it will need to heed the Continued over ►

MOTORING maker’s advice and ensure the right buyers are snapping them up. It’s true that at £25,990, with the government’s £5,000 grant thrown in, the Leaf looks expensive but we’d liken it to a new Apple Mac: It might do the same thing as a normal computer, but knowing you’re at the forefront of technology and slightly wacky-cool for owning it, will make that extra cash worth spending. Selling Points 1. £1 will take you 73 miles – in a Focus diesel £1 is good for 11 miles 2. On a PCP (most popular buying method) it costs £399 per month 3.
