W

elcome to the September edition…

By the time you read this the holiday season will be almost over, our children will be in denial of the necessity of school and it seems we will have enjoyed a true summer; Wow! How good it has been to be able to complain about it being ‘too hot’ and for having ‘missed the day’ due to work! My daughter’s first weeks of the holidays were spent camping with Scouts - Duke of Edinburgh expedition on the moors, followed by a big week long international camp. It’s not that she is very noisy or demanding, messy yes, but you notice when she is not in the house! Scouts and Guides are such fantastic organisations. My two children have experienced camping, walking, abseiling, climbing, kayaking, archery and so much more. There’s nothing like it, and they gain so much from it; teamwork, confidence and social skills, stuff schools cannot always do so effectively. We are ever grateful to the group leaders who give up their time to make it all possible. Having been a local cub leader myself, I know how much hard work it is, balancing busy diaries, but its’ great fun and very rewarding. More volunteers are always needed, so if you would like to volunteer (no prior experience is necessary), why not chat to your local group leaders or district leaders– most are listed in the Handy Mag – about what help they might need. Our competition each month gets bigger and bigger. We receive more and more entries and when I meet people usually their first comment is about those annoying little characters we hide and how hard they are to find! Thank you to everyone who enters. All of your lovely comments on postcards and emails brighten our days! Well done to Alex from Oswaldkirk for winning the July edition competition! Until next month…

MUSIC FUN FOR YOUR

LITTLE MONKEYS

M

usic is known to enhance learning and development in young children, increasing confidence, concentration and dexterity. Kate Smith, owner of Little Monkeys’ Music, had this in mind when she set up her business almost 5 years ago. Coming from a musical family, Kate was keen for her daughter to join in with a music group. Finding there was no group locally, Kate took the plunge and set one up by herself. Little Monkeys’ Music classes are completely unique, each planned carefully by Kate to ensure that all children are able to take part whatever their age or ability. There are familiar nursery rhymes and action games along with sensory activities like parachute games as well as less

well-known songs. Little Monkeys’ have two private classes a week, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10am at Captain Barneys in Malton. “I love seeing toddlers develop and grow in confidence,” says Kate. “We have lots of fun with singing, dancing and movement, and classes are a great way for grown-ups to meet other parents too.” Over the years her business has gone from strength to strength and Kate is now booked by playgroups, nurseries and children’s centres. She even has expansion plans with a new teacher in Scarborough and is looking for more people to follow in Driffield and York areas. How about a popular Little Monkeys’ Music party for your child? These cover all of the fun of classes

any people worry that when their old double glazed windows become misted-up or broken, there is no alternative but to replace the whole window. Fersina Windows in Malton, specialists in reglazing, can save you a whole lot of money and extend the life of your windows simply by replacing the doubleglazed unit itself. John Best from Sherburn had his windows installed by Fersina in 1986 and, after the fantastic service he received back then, he went back to the company to ask about an upgrade earlier this year. Fersina have now re-glazed all of John’s windows to meet current installation and quality standards. John is over the moon with the new replacement windows, and even more so when he calculated the savings he’s made. John worked out that the original installation and re-glazing cost less than having wooden windows redecorated every 5 years since 1986! Give Fersina a call on 01653 693590 or pay a visit to their showroom on Horsemarket Road, Malton to see how they can help with anything from a single window to your whole house.

YORKSHIRE FOLK GIVING MONEY AWAY? NEVER!

Julie Wilson, no-nonsense Yorkshire Financial Planner

I

have a dear elderly client who recently inherited a good sum of money from a distant cousin. Great, I hear you say. Well actually, not so great. Because this particular client already has an Inheritance Tax problem.

doesn’t need the money she’s inherited. She already has more than enough. So. What to do? Well, what we did was give up the inheritance. Yes. Really. A Yorkshirewoman giving away money. What has the world come to. But this isn’t as daft as it sounds.

As I’ve bored on about incessantly, when someone dies worth more than £325,000, anything above that is taxed at 40%. And that tax is payable before the estate can be paid out to the beneficiaries. Which means that more than £40,000 of my client’s inheritance is going to disappear when she dies unless we do something about it.

Let me explain. We “varied” the terms of the cousin’s will so that it re-directs the money to a trust. And my client has access to the trust money if she needs it. It’s unlikely she will. And if she doesn’t, it will go down to her grandchildren. For their education or to help them buy a house.

A lot of people make the mistake of thinking Inheritance Tax only concerns the rich. But £325,000 isn’t that much. You only need to own a half decent house and you’re already caught by Inheritance Tax before we start counting the savings and investments and other stuff you own. And the sad truth is that my dear elderly client

So, rather than giving away a bucketful of money as it first seems, what we’ve done is retained access to it if we need it. Passed it down the generations if we don’t need it. And saved tens of thousands of pounds of tax in the process. Now that sounds like having your cake and eating it where I come from. If you’d like increased well-being and a better quality of life, for a limited period, we can offer a FREE half hour telephone interview with one of our friendly straighttalking advisers, with absolutely no obligation. You can tell us what’s on your mind, and we’ll tell you whether we can help you increase your wealth, and protect it from greedy bankers, crazy Governments, grasping authorities and other legalised robbers.

ON YOUR PLOT HERBS

Nature tends to dictate what we do in the garden and sometimes it’s just too late to plant those seeds, too early to prune that bush and incredibly you are already on top of the weeding. So what can you do to fulfil that urge to work the land? Why start a herb garden of course!

JOBS FOR SEPTEMBER:

If you are growing pumpkins for Halloween, you need to support the fruit as it swells and raise it up to keep it off the wet ground and deter slugs. Restrict each plant to no more than three fruits. Clear up finished crops, clean and store any supports or netting for future use. Keep planting winter lettuces for a supply of fresh leaves right through autumn. Fancy fresh strawberries next year? Now is a good time to get new plants established. Add support to Brussels sprouts by drawing up earth around the stems, or using canes.

M

ost activity on your plot is tied to the seasons, but this month we take a look at one project that can be started off at almost any time of the year - your own herb garden. As we’ve taken to growing more and more of our own food so we have found ourselves getting increasingly interested in trying out new recipes to make the most of all those lovely fresh flavours. Recipe books abound in our kitchen and they all have one thing in common - the use of herbs, and what a variety of them there is! Whether you’re looking for a sprig of fresh mint, a handful of rosemary, or some chopped chives what could be better than being able to choose and harvest them right outside your own back door? Choosing the right site for your herb garden is important, and outside your back door is often a good place to start! Planting near the kitchen

If this is the case you will need to give some consideration to containing the growth of some of the more vigorous varieties. This can be done by dividing the bed (a cartwheel design made with bricks is very attractive), or by using pots sunk into the ground. Herbs comprise of both annual plants, that germinate, grow, flower and die within the year, and perennials that will grow on from one year to the next. Whatever you plant, you will need to find out which type it is and the conditions that it favours. The more hardy perennial types such as thyme, rosemary or mint may be happy outside all year round. One of the advantages of using containers is that tender varieties can be moved under cover during the worst of the winter and even tender annuals like basil can have their season extended by lifting plants to pot up and keep on the kitchen windowsill as autumn approaches. One of the great things about a herb garden is that it can be continually evolving. Look upon it as just the start of a collection, that will grow with time. Adding a new variety can be as simple as picking up a plant that takes your fancy on a trip out and adding a new pot to your collection. As well as using herbs fresh from the garden, you can dry leaves by hanging in bunches and then storing in an airtight container, or use ice cube trays to freeze chopped up leaves with a drop of water. Store the cubes in polythene bags, great for adding to a stew in the middle of winter!

FOODBANK OPENS Our monthly column by Andy Boxall, Minister of Elim Ryedale Church

Thanks to the churches working together, the support of Ryedale Council and the generous donations from members of the community, Ryedale now has a Foodbank. It has taken a dedicated group of volunteers, led by Lesley Hurley, just over a year to find funding, recruit and train volunteers, collect over 2 tonnes of food, organise a temporary food store and to finally open their first Distribution Centre. However, I am left with mixed emotions. On one hand, I want to celebrate the dedication of the volunteers and generosity of the community, and I am pleased people in Ryedale are able to receive food, help and support through a crisis. However, I’m also saddened that in the 21st Century we still need Foodbanks. Surely, this must make us stop and wonder how the United Kingdom, a member of the G8 (forum for the Governments of eight of the world’s eleven largest National Economies), should be experiencing a growing need for emergency food? According to the statistics, there is a growing crisis. There are now 345 Foodbanks Nationwide, who gave food to more than 350,000 people during the last year; almost triple the number who received food in the previous year. As demand grows, it is estimated that between 400 and 650 more Foodbanks will be needed to cope with the crisis. Although I recognise the need for Foodbanks, I hope they prove to be a temporary measure and a long-term solution is found. Trussell Trust opened their first Foodbank in 2000. They rely on churches to work with them and in partnership with local communities to establish and run Foodbanks. Recipients must always be referred by Care Professionals such as Social Workers, CAB Advisers, Housing Associations or the Police who will then issue them a voucher. These vouchers can then be presented at a Distribution Centre and a food box is prepared containing three days’ supply of non-perishable foods such as tinned fruit, vegetables, meat and fish as well as pasta, cereal, UHT milk, sauces, tea, and long-life juice. Due to the size of Ryedale, it is thought that more Distribution Centres will be needed, aiming to put help in easy reach of those in need, the first in Pickering in the Autumn. All food is donated locally and there are lots of drop-off points including your local church, Hope Central and Ryedale Council if you would like to make a contribution. YOUR PERFECT PC

BUILT LOCALLY

Q

uiet PC is a small North Yorkshire-based computer company that started literally from a bedroom. Glenn Garrett was working as a computer engineer at the time and after upgrading his own PC at home, soon became irritated by the increased noise caused by its more powerful cooling fan.

Surprised to find that no readily apparent solution was available to buy on the Internet, he ordered a sample box of quiet fans direct from a manufacturer, thinking that he would use one himself and give or sell the rest to his friends. But Glenn was so impressed with fans that he decided to set up a small website to publicise and sell them by mail order in his spare time. He was taken aback with the positive response and soon

had to go part-time with his main job to keep up with the demand. A few months later, he went full time with Quiet PC and took on some employees. Soon afterward, when a foreign 40 foot artic lorry with 20 foot trailer pulled up outside his house in a small residential estate just before breakfast, it became apparent that working from home couldn’t continue for much longer. A farm near his parents’ house came up for sale and it was decided that this should be Quiet

Today Quiet PC still sells PC components but its main focus is fully-built computers which are assembled from scratch on their own premises. PC’s next home. It took a few years to improve the outbuildings but the project was a success and there was plenty of room for expansion, as well as the pleasure of living and working in rural surroundings. Productivity was dramatically increased when an ultra high-speed wireless Internet connection was secured from Glenn’s father’s company, Beeline Broadband. Quiet PC expanded steadily, and offered more and more PC parts to build and improve customers’ computers all over the world. Today Quiet PC still sells PC components but its main focus is fully-built computers which are assembled from scratch on their own premises. Sales are conducted primarily through www.quietpc.com and by telephone, but the personal touch is never forgotten and any

customer who makes the effort to travel to their rural HQ near Malton is always warmly welcomed. Of course there is more to a computer than how quietly it runs, so all the machines supplied by Quiet PC are carefully designed and built for high performance and a long life. They come with free lifetime technical support and a “no junkware” promise. Although smartphones and tablets have recently increased in popularity, still nothing can match the humble desktop PC for ergonomic comfort, performance and value for money. The fact that they’re designed and built locally is a bonus!

COOKING Caramel Apple Tart

Serves 6-8.

INGREDIENTS

For the pastry case: • 200g plain flour, plus extra For the pastry • 250g plain flour • 125g butter, cubed • Pinch of salt • 3-4 tablespoons cold water For the filling • 50g caster sugar • 50g dark muscavado sugar • 50g butter • 25ml water • 700g Bramley apples, peeled, cored and sliced • Juice and zest of 1 lemon • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon • Caster sugar for sprinkling • 25cm pie dish

METHOD

To make the pastry sift the flour and salt into a bowl. Rub the butter into the flour using your fingertips until it resembles fine breadcrumbs. Pour in the cold water and mix with a round-bladed knife until it all starts to come together. Knead the pastry a little until it forms a ball. The less you handle it the more short and crumbly it will be. Then wrap in clingfilm and rest it in the fridge for 30 minutes. Take about two thirds of the pastry and roll it out onto a floured surface into a circle big enough to line the pie dish. Gently press the pastry into the pie dish and trim off any excess. Wrap it up again and put back in the fridge while the apples are prepared. Peel, core and slice the apples no thinner than 0.5cm. Squeeze the lemon over them and grate in the zest. Sprinkle with the cinnamon. To make the caramel sauce melt the butter in a large pan, then add the flour and cook gently for one minute. Add both sugars and the water then bring to the boil and simmer for a few minutes. Add the apple slices and stir to coat them with the caramel. Cook gently for a few more minutes until 38 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

the apples begin to soften. Allow to cool, and then place them into the lined pie dish. Preheat the oven to 170˚C. Roll out the remaining pastry and cut it into 10 or 12 strips as long as the pie dish. Use a pastry brush to brush a little water around the edges of the tart so the lattice top will stick. Weave the lattice on top, securing the edges. Then trim off the excess pastry. Sprinkle the pie generously with caster sugar, then bake for 30minutes. Serve with custard or good quality ice-cream.

LET YOUR HOME PUT

CASH BACK INTO YOUR POCKET Hundreds of property owners in this region are reaping the benefits of turning to Renewable Energy to power their homes.

P

eak Power Systems, based in Pickering and one of Yorkshire’s leading independent installation specialists, believe the technology has signalled a new era in how we generate electricity, heat our houses, help the environment and save money.

40 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

The recently introduced Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a new initiative that provides grants and subsidies for people replacing their old heating systems with more efficient, energy saving alternatives. For many people with older central heating systems, the RHI payments will cover all of your installation and running costs for the life of the scheme.

The Government-backed Feedin Tariff scheme for Solar PV has proved a big incentive for many homeowners, and with the recently introduced Renewable Heat Incentive for Heat pump systems, renewable technology is here to stay. SOLAR PV guarantees cheaper electricity for the life of the system, and provides an investment income far greater than the current return on cash savings.

Mark Chappell, founder of Peak Power Systems, said: “We’ve installed hundreds of systems throughout North Yorkshire, many of them for people who

are retired or nearing retirement and want to protect themselves from the ever-rising costs of electricity and heating.

INC VAT, FULLY FITTED

“By investing in modern technologies, you insulate yourself against the ever rising cost of fuel and electricity; and when you set the cost of the installation against the return on your investment, you can expect the system to pay for itself in less than seven years”. He added: “There’s no charge for us to assess the property, carry out a survey and provide a quote. In fact, we recommend all customers go through this exercise to make sure renewable energy is right for them. It’s in our best interests to make sure the customer makes the correct decision

Mark and his partner, Debbie, launched Peak Power Systems on the strength of their long-held interest in renewable energy, coupled with Mark’s background in electrical engineering. The company is accredited with the MCS (Micro-generation Certificate Scheme), which requires an annual inspection of its work as well as the standard of customer service. One of the company’s biggest projects so far has been the installation of a large solar PV system at a caravan park in Wrelton. Mark said: “We’re small enough to provide a very good one-to-one service to our customers but at the same time big enough to tackle just about any project, whether it is for a home, an office complex,

a warehouse or farm buildings, but our main aim is to keep the cost to the customer as low as possible. “Most of our work is in and around Pickering and the wider North Yorkshire region, although we have completed projects as far away as Scotland, and as a company working mostly with local people our aim is to provide a first class job at realistic prices and with no hidden bills at the end of it”. For more information on Peak Power Systems and what we can do for you, or if you would like more information on how Solar PV and Heat Pumps systems work, please contact Mark or Debbie on 01751 476989 or visit www. peakpowersystems.co.uk.

A GOOD READ By Kath Bennett

No-Bot: The Robot with No Bottom

My Animals and Other Family By Claire Balding In recent years, Claire Balding has slowly risen to ‘national treasure’ status. Not only does she know a great deal about sport, but she seems to have the knack of showing genuine interest in everything she presents and everyone she talks to. It all appears to be such good fun.

By Sue Hendra

This same personality shines out from her autobiography, which covers her childhood, school, university, and the very beginnings of her broadcasting career. As the title suggests, it is the animals who take centre stage in a world that revolves around horses and dogs. Each chapter is based on a particular character, from Candy the boxer dog who was her very first friend, to some of the greats of the equine world who passed through her father’s racing yard. From the first, this feels like a very honest book. Balding does not paint over her faults – she shows them very clearly and is not afraid of being the butt of the joke. The sections which deal with her relationship with her younger brother Andrew are likely to feel very familiar to anyone who has ever coerced a younger sibling into doing something they really knew they should not: or indeed to anyone who has ever been that unfortunate younger sibling! Her school life is particularly well told too, as she documents the mistakes she made and the way in which she seized the second chance she was given. The most memorable and touching aspect though, is the passion for the animals who give the book their structure. As well as telling the story of her early life, Balding offers a fascinating insight into the life of a racing yard, and the highs and lows of competitive horse racing when your father is a champion trainer. Beautifully illustrated and always well written, this is an excellent read for anyone interested in sport, animals or even just people.

Sue Hendra’s name will be instantly recognisable to anyone who has ever come across Barry, Norman or Keith. Like the heroes above, Bernard the Robot has an unusual problem. Can he find the solution? Can he find his bottom? Barry, of course, is The Fish with Fingers; Norman is The Slug with the Silly Shell, and Keith is a Cat with a Magic Hat. If you haven’t met them, then you are in for a treat. Now Bernard is set to join them after an unfortunate incident, in which he leaves his bottom behind on a swing at the park. At first he doesn’t notice, but by the time he does his bottom is long gone – it has been a bird’s nest, a drum and who knows what else! Sadly for Bernard his friends can’t help, and when they advise him to sit down, he has to remind them that he isn’t a robot any more – he is a no-bot. Will he find his bottom before it is too late? This book appeals to young children on so many levels. For a start, it is about bottoms. There is a ‘hide and seek’ element of trying to spot Bernard’s bottom, and even a dance to do. I challenge you to read without giggling!

by Christine Parker cold food. This may have BDS (GDC 72136) several causes such as gum shrinkage, over-brushing or tooth grinding. Your dentist should be able to establish the most likely. Treatment is often based on reducing the symptoms, however, when persistent, preventative treatment may be necessary. Dental Caries (tooth decay) - Your Dentist will examine your teeth for signs of decay and take x-rays on average every 2 years, although the frequency depends on your oral health. Holes inside teeth are not visible to the naked eye and which if not treated will in time progress to a dental abscess. The tooth becomes hypersensitive and pain varies from a dull aching throb to intense sharp shooting pain which can shoot into the opposing jaw and may not respond to pain relief. When teeth reach this stage there are generally two options: remove them or provide root canal therapy. Periodontal (Gum) Disease - Like decay this has several levels and is most commonly associated with failure to remove the plaque fully when brushing. Starting as Gingivitis (inflammation of the gingivae), you may notice some blood after brushing. Left untreated this will progress to Periodontal Disease which can cause toothache, even though its origins are in the gum. It can lead to bone loss and extraction of otherwise healthy teeth.

Sadly too many people wait until they have toothache before attending the dentist and this can significantly reduce their treatment options and increase the complexity and cost of treatment.

OSTEOARTHRITIS By Carly Bodill and Claire Doughney

O

steoarthritis is a ‘wear and tear’ process which may affect any joint in the body leading to pain, swelling, stiffness and loss of function. Doctors and Health Care Professionals treat and advise people with osteoarthritis on a daily basis. Symptoms can range from aching during and after periods of activity, to severe pain and which stops all activity and disturbs sleep. The osteoarthritic process often becomes apparent with ageing; however other factors that can contribute towards early osteoarthritis include previous fractures of a joint. Exercise, including local muscle strengthening and general aerobic fitness, is a core treatment for people with osteoarthritis irrespective of age, general health and severity of pain (NICE clinical guidance 59). Other factors that can help manage symptoms of osteoarthritis are weight loss, improved strength and fitness and pain relieving medication. As with many medical conditions, symptoms

of osteoarthritis can be similar to other joint and muscle problems and it is important to seek advice further advice from your general practitioner should your symptoms persist. People suffering from osteoarthritis often enter a pain cycle whereby pain reduces function causing increased joint stiffness which in turn causes more pain and further loss of function. This cycle can quickly exacerbate the symptoms of osteoarthritis leading to interference with activities of daily living and reduced quality of life. Health professionals can offer a range of techniques to help people with osteoarthritis to try and interrupt the pain cycle. Treatments may include lifestyle advice including exercise and self management techniques to improve function and sleep patterns, manual therapy, acupuncture, electrotherapy and alternative therapies such as reflexology and massage. It is recognised that therapies provided do not the reverse any joint osteoarthritic changes but they may allow people to manage osteoarthritic symptoms to remain active and improve general well being.

HE FRENCH are at it again. They’re often regarded as fashionistas – and the new DS3 Cabrio from Citroën lends further support to that perception. The latest development in the chevron adorned motor company’s stylish DS line is the top-down version of the DS3. The car features intelligent design and glittery looks to make open-top driving easier and even more pleasurable. The Cabrio boasts all the characteristics that have made its hatchback sister so popular - daring styling, chic elegance, all-embracing personalisation and an enjoyable motoring experience. But Citroën’s unique selling point is that it is the only five-seater in its class and features a larger boot than key rivals such as the MINI Convertible and FIAT 500C. The powered roof can be opened or shut at speeds of up to 75mph - which is also exclusive in this segment. Quite frankly, rag-top driving has never been so simple.

48 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Continuing the DS line’s customisation levels, the Cabrio is available in seven body colours with three colourcoordinated roof designs for a choice of fourteen combinations. There are nine different wheel styles to let you express your personality even further, and you can specify 16” or 17” alloys in an array of shades and patterns. Apart from the lid peeling off, another hip highlight is the motor’s attention-grabbing, three-dimensional LED tail-

A button on the overhead console controls the roof to three positions - intermediate, horizontal and total - with the covering fully opening or closing in just 16 seconds. Even in the horizontal setting, your rear passengers get a clear view overhead. When the roof is open, a very useful aerodynamic front deflector provides further earsoothing assistance by deflecting air currents and preventing air buffeting. If only the seats repelled the cold as effectively – heated seats would definitely be beneficial for die-hard roof-off British motorists. The Cabrio inherits all the well-located technology of the conventional DS3, including Citroën’s integrated satellite navigation system, which features a colour screen, Europe-wide navigation; Bluetooth® and USB connectivity. And with rear parking sensors fitted across the range, you have that extra reassurance when parking with the roof down. For added well-being, whatever the weather, automatic air conditioning is also available.

CHRONICLES IN THE LIFE OF VIEW OF ALFIE PART 2 ANA DAYALTERNATIVE IN PRACTICE. stomach. I didn’t want to watch any more, but I just couldn’t tear myself away. I saw the poor dog’s hair coming off in clumps. Next, the nurse reached for the Hoover and attempted to suck the helpless dog up it. Thankfully the dog remained on the table. She obviously realised her mistake. It was clear even to me, the dog was to large to fit up the Hoover spout. She took a moment before deciding on her next mode of torture. The dog was covered in a soapy liquid and scrubbed all over his stomach area - bath!! Agghh could this get any worse?

s I entered the prep room, I could see Phil at the sink, he didn’t see me as he had his back to me. He was scrubbing his hands furiously and I couldn’t help wondering, what on earth could have happened to make him so dirty. To my right there were double doors with narrow windows set in them. I wondered what was behind them, as it seemed, given the sounds coming from the room beyond, this was where all the action was taking place. If I stepped back behind the prep table I could just see through the window. I rather started to wish I hadn’t looked though, as I saw the nurse stood over a male dog, which had been tied down to a table with ropes. He was attached to a machine by a large pipe going into his mouth. The nurse was bent over him; a horrible growling noise filled the air as her hands moved up and down over his

It would seem I had found the operating theatre but I had no idea what went on in them. How could Phil work here knowing what went on? Thankfully he finished washing himself and entered the operating room through the double doors. I was not sure why, perhaps he had been really dirty, but he had got changed into what looked like a dress! Phil in a dress! This was certainly turning into a strange and not so pleasant day. I tried to calm myself, ok, so Phil was displaying some strange behaviour and I had certainly seen a side to him I was not familiar with, but it did not mean he would condone the wicked nurse’s actions. He would put a stop to this barbaric behaviour I was sure of it. I knew him better than anyone. I watched him as he exchanged words with the nurse. But something wasn’t right. He was smiling and rather than setting the dog free, he was taking instruments from the nurse.

STATION TION HOUSE VETS Equine & Small Animal

With a scalpel in his hand he cut into the dog. I watched in horror, this was not the man I knew, who I went home with every night, this man was clearly deranged. I let out an involuntary yelp. Phil turned towards me to find the source of the sound. In his hand was the dogs TESTICLE!!! “Out Alfie” he barked. “will some one put my dog outside please?” I did not need telling twice and ran for the back door. Cully was already there. In one skilful swoop she leapt up and opened the door with her paws, we both ran out into the garden to dig some holes. After such an eventful morning I felt the need to join Cully for a little snooze in the sunshine. Celia Carr RVN, Station House Vets

In a way, the British are lucky, we speak English and it is the global language of the world. Almost any foreigner can at least manage a “hello”, but perhaps this is more a hindrance than help. It allows us to become lazy, and the English are left in a perpetual state of monolinguism. The stereotype of talking to foreigners LOUDLY AND SLOWLY is in fact pretty accurate when it comes to British linguistic competence and attitudes towards learning language, and is frankly embarrassing when compared to the rest of Europe. 56% of German nationals have a good command of English, whereas the UK lags behind with only 1 in 10 of us able to speak any foreign language at all.

Sadly, with less and less students learning languages, this doesn’t seem likely to change, which I would say is truly a shame. Languages may be difficult, but they really are worth it. With language learning comes a greater understanding of culture and the people with whom we share the world, not to mention that it is an enjoyable experience, and possibly one of the most rewarding. - Ella

rantee•G ua

rantee•G ua

Yet, despite this, very few students will be sitting in the Modern Foreign Language classrooms this September. In most European countries, learning English is mandatory throughout primary and secondary education. Quite the opposite is true here, after a 45% drop in A level students studying languages in the past decade; the numbers are on a steady decline. Perhaps this is due to the fact that language learning is tough, and can be complicated, maybe languages are not being taught in the most effective ways, or maybe too much stress is put on achieving impressive maths and science grades, so the language subjects have been pushed to the side.

It’s been proven by many a study that learning foreign languages increases your brain function, in fact it’s been said to be the most powerful brain training exercise you can do. People with language skills are highly coveted in business and communications, and speaking another language proficiently certainly makes it easier when travelling. Most importantly, studies have found that the majority of Britons would be interested in learning a new language.

IT’S ALL ABOUT

AIDCA!

By Dee Blick

Y

ou’ve finally agreed an advertising budget. It’s not quite as big as you’d like but it’s a start. Now, armed with that budget what do you do? Well, I know you don’t mean to but the chances are that you’ll blow it for the smallest of returns. You’ll be left scratching your head wondering why the miracle never happened and, will conclude that advertising doesn’t work. Advertising does work. We still love responding to adverts, especially in community magazines where businesses can showcase their wares to their local customers.

IS PLANNING A

A BRIDGE NIGHT QUALITY PRIZES

There is a fantastic tool I use when writing adverts; AIDCA which stands for: Attention, Interest, Desire, Caution, and Action. AIDCA is the mental process a person goes through before they buy into your advert and your advert has to take the reader through AIDCA in seconds otherwise you’ll lose them. Attention - Start with your... attention grabbing headline. Interest - Build on the reader’s interest with your proposition with two or three compelling benefits.

EXCELLENT RAFFLE

Full details will appear in next month’s Handy Mag 58 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

Desire - Build desire with your value drenched irresistible special offer or giveaway. Add some genuine customer feedback. A few, unedited lines are more than enough. Caution - is the deal breaker where your good work can go to waste. The reader is interested in your advert. Your benefits are good. The offer has moved them closer to you. But they remain cautious. Consider the questions a prospect will ask you in the tentative early stages of the buying process.

Copy deadline for the next edition is Tuesday 3rd September

RYEDALE • SEPTEMBER 2013 • ISSUE 92

Action - Make clear to your reader what you want them to do next. Have your contact details, the terms and conditions of any special offers, website details, social media profiles and telephone number available. Whilst readers are linked by their need for you, you can bet your bottom dollar they will have different response preferences. I like to telephone, you like to e-mail. I like to check you out on Twitter you like to go straight to my website. Make it easy for your prospect to book a meeting; request a quote, take advantage of your free session or incredible offer. I can guarantee that if you use AIDCA when writing adverts you’ll be well and truly on the road to writing adverts that really do sell.

TRAVEL

THE TRIBAL LAND By Lisa Eldridge

T

here is something so special about Namibia; its stunning desert, skeleton coast and quirky German towns. Africa is where mankind is thought to have begun, and 400,000 years after the emergence of Homo sapiens, this country still holds an aura of mystery and fascination, none more so than Namibia’s homogenous tribes. The Himbas are a seminomadic tribe who live within the Kaokoveld region and having read about this unique race who live in Northern Namibia, I was intrigued to meet these tribeswomen who cover themselves in red ochre, and are admired for their unique beauty. I was staying in the German

town of Swakopmund and rumour had it that the Himbas were in town. The women regularly travelled here to sell their hand-made jewellery to help sustain their way of life.

my heart began to race. As much as I had read about this tribe, I was unaware of how their reddish appearance could be so striking. I was star-struck, unable to communicate as one by one they tied their handmade bracelets around my wrists until my arms were covered in the same red powdery stain as theirs. All the time speaking amongst themselves

I was star-struck, unable to communicate as one by one they tied their handmade bracelets around my wrists until my arms were covered in the same red powdery stain as theirs. I had seen their pictures gracing the glossy covers of travel magazines and was now about to see them for myself. As I approached the beachfront, a small group of woman with red dreadlocked hair and goat-skin loin cloths caught my eye, and

in a language that I could not comprehend. This tribe were a far cry from their ancestors who I had encountered just a day before; a tribe who adorned themselves in Victorian dress and pointed hats

They spoke the same Bantu language yet they were so different. Both descendants from East Africa, the tribe had segregated two centuries before and moved south to settle as cattle ranchers, becoming known as the Herero tribe. Upon arrival of the missionaries, the Herero tribe were encouraged to wear the clothes of that era, and wore Victorian dresses and cow-horn hats, which have become their tribal landmark. Both had welcomed me with such warm smiles and had given me a glimpse into the strength of their culture; the Himba who had survived through adversity to maintain their traditional way of life and the Herero, once nomadic pastoralists who have preserved their way of life despite German rule. One ancestry, two tribes, a total contrast from one another yet united in so many ways… Lisa Eldridge is a travel journalist specialising in solo female travel. www.girlabouttheglobe.com/blog

MALTON EVENTS GROUP

NEEDS YOU! A

ll of the fantastic events in Malton centre don’t happen by themselves! They happen because of the efforts of a dedicated group of local business owners and residents who get together once a month to help make Malton a more vibrant place to live and work. Malton Events Group was formed about 4 years ago to help coordinate and promote events but we need more help.

We meet at The Yard, Market Place, Malton on the first Wednesday of each month to discuss arrangements. There are sub-groups for each event and you can put in as much or as little time as you can afford. We welcome residents and local businesses to the group.

The group is responsible for co-ordinating the Christmas Light Switch-on, the Pride of Malton and Norton Awards, fashion show, Maltonopoly in December last year and are involved in many others.

Simply come along to meetings 6-7pm at The Yard, Malton or email mandy.west@jpress.co.uk for more information.
