elcome to our April edition. Firstly a big apology to all those to tried their best to complete our crossword last month. It was extra challenging as the clues didn’t match the grid! Thank you to those eagle-eyed readers who pointed this out to us. I have actually checked the grid myself this month to make sure it is correct and for those who need it the answer is on page 74. Thank you also to all those who completed our survey last month. We have had some really interesting feedback. There was a prize for entering and we’ve drawn Mrs Pickering as the winner. Well done and thank you very much for entering! This month spring should really get going. It should…at the time of writing it is snowing outside and I’m not exactly warm. My other half has started clearing out our two garden ponds. The

front pond is formal and has goldfish, whilst our back garden pond is relaxed and is a haven for wildlife. Whilst this is great, it is also a haven for frogs and is usually a bubbling mass of writhing amphibians come April! A couple of years ago the lining developed a leak (more to do with the use of a scythe than really an accident!) but it had to be emptied. My husband and son enjoyed an exciting day scooping out water and wildlife into plastic boxes and there were frogs everywhere! I am not really a fan, despite being told they eat slugs (a complete phobia of mine!). This year I’m hoping the early clear out will discourage quite so much activity in the pond, although I have recently seen them hopping into the front pond... There are, as usual, lots of local activities to get involved with this month. And if you need help in your garden or home, get in touch with one of our lovely local tradesmen. Well done to Jennifer Summerhayes of Haxby for winning the February competition.

ENGLISH EVOLUTION BY MARY MAHON

With the world ready and waiting to be explored, the desire to learn foreign languages is greater than ever. Whether you’re fresh out of education ready to taste the world, a businessman visiting distant countries or simply a holiday-goer travelling to new, vibrant sights, knowing another language is always helpful. However, we all speak three extra languages without even realising it... In the modern day, most of us are fluent in the three languages: ‘sarcasm’, ‘exaggeration’ and ‘emoji’, and these evolutions of English have become intertwined into the very core of our society. Seemingly everybody exaggerates and it’s no surprise why! The internet is a catalyst for trends, relentlessly taking new phrases and making them viral. I myself am a helpless victim; around lunchtime I am ‘literally starving’, when I’m waiting at the bus stop I am ‘genuinely freezing’, and after watching a good film, I’ll claim it’s ‘incredible’, it’s ‘awesome’ or, best yet, it’s ‘absolutely heart-stopping’. Similarly, I’m sure most of us are a little too fluent in speaking sarcasm. Like exaggeration, sarcasm alters true meanings, so generally ‘no’ means ‘yes’ and ‘please go on’ means ‘seriously, stop talking’. However, using sarcasm over text, to a young child or to someone who isn’t fluent in the same language often leads to confusion - it’s an art in itself! Emojis are innovative to our generation; something so simple yet now so utterly essential. The digital expressions of emotions, ideas and opinions truly are incredible, as they help us break language barriers across the globe effortlessly. Even the Oxford Dictionary joined the trend, recognising the ‘Face with Tears of Joy’ as the word of the year in 2015! Whilst some people disapprove of this ‘devolution’ of language, I believe language change is something to be embraced! Imagine a world where we still recited ‘thus’, ‘thy’ and ‘thee’ on a daily basis. Yes, this might trivialise the original meaning of words, but in essence we are simply spicing up our language, expressing a greater passion in our speech! And surely, having an exciting, passionate life is something to die for. 6 • info@thehandymag.co.uk

ven now in modern times the fireplace is still the central point in the room. We still like the idea of heat and an appealing focal point. We talk to all sorts of people from so many different areas and all sorts of styles of home.

the choice and range of imitation stoves has increased both in gas and electric. So, regardless of your preferred fuel choice, there’s a stove just for you.

The one thing that is always said, even in modern homes is: “we love a fireplace”. It’s strange if one is not there, and when it comes to planning a rooms décor, it is difficult to work out the layout without one.

Customers love the care and attention that Focus give them, from start to finish. The advantages of having our own in house fitting and experienced sales staff allows us to control and deliver the high standards we expect from ourselves. Our installation team are both HETAS and Gas Safe registered.

Fashions come and go, even in fireplaces. We have noticed over the years the popularity of stoves, they don’t always suit every lifestyle or flue. However,

How to make your Conservatory feel like a Proper Room

I

f you’ve ever tried to use your conservatory in the winter, you’ll know that it can feel like a cold, damp and dismal part of the house. In all the glossy conservatory sales catalogues, the sun is always shining, the garden is blooming and everyone is having fun being in the bright and clean ‘new room’. The reality is that most conservatories are too hot to use in comfort in the summer, and certainly too cold to use in the winter. Condensation can be a problem in the winter, and it’s too bright to watch a tv in there in the summer. And when it rains, the noise can be deafening! Most conservatories have been built as temporary structures and usually as a less expensive alternative to an extension. This means that they don’t comply with the building regulations that an extension would have to do especially in terms of the thermal efficiency. The team at local specialists Inceil talk to homeowners every day who want to be able to use their conservatory all year round and not just on the handful of days when the temperature is perfect! Their cost-effective solution is to fit an insulated ceiling fitted to the existing roof structure in just 1 or 2 days. The new plastered ceiling follows the contours of the existing roof and uses the most thermally dynamic insulation available. Your conservatory will feel like a proper room with a better temperature year round. And you don’t have to do anything to the external roof.

On the Inceil informative website www.inceil.co.uk you can watch an installation video which shows exactly how the process works, and request a free survey and quote. Or give them a call on 01904 891936. Transform your conservatory in just one or two days into a comfortable and usable part of your home.

From our customers: John and his lovely team have just finished our ceiling today. We are delighted with it even before it’s painted! The service, from wrapping our furniture at the start to the clean up at the end, was excellent. You barely knew they were there the whole time and I would unreservedly recommend Inceil”. Helen

It’s important when having any works done that you are happy with the people working in your home. Customers frequently comment on how polite and friendly everyone is in the Inceil team – and that they cleaned up when they had finished!

York Double Concert

e Ryedale Festival introduces its 2016 season to York audiences with a Double Concert in York’s two great medieval halls. Two short contrasting concerts are performed twice; the audiences will change places either side of the interval. In the Merchant Adventurers’ Hall the Heath Quartet evoke the world of War and Peace with Tchaikovsky’s noble and lyrical First String Quartet – its slow movement based on a Ukrainian folksong that famously moved Leo Tolstoy to tears.

In contrast, the Merchant Taylors’ Hall (this year celebrating its 600th anniversary) is the setting for an irresistible recital by one of the country’s leading musicians, Catrin Finch, known as ‘e Queen of Harps’, and former Royal Harpist to HRH e Prince of Wales.

COMMON LAW SPOUSE - FACT OR FICTION?

MITCHELLS Solicitors

“Traditional Values - up-to-date knowledge”

In the UK in 2012 there were 5.9 million people cohabiting, double the 1996 figure, with the biggest percentage increase being amongst the over 65’s, making cohabitation the fastest growing family type in the UK.

Despite this, recent changes to the intestacy rules (determining who the property and estate passes to when someone dies without a valid Will) has strengthened the position for married couples and those in civil partnerships but not for unmarried couples. Unmarried couples will have no automatic entitlement to their deceased partner’s assets and their estate will pass automatically to their closest relatives, often either their children or their siblings. This could result in your lifelong partner being left with nothing. The concept of ‘common law’ spouse does not exist and is not one which is recognised in law. John Staniland, Solicitor at Mitchells says “Dealing with the loss of a loved one is distressing enough without having to face the prospect of losing your home and your financial security. We strongly recommend every adult to make a Will but it is particularly important for cohabiting couples. Whilst a surviving partner may in certain circumstances have the right to make a claim against the deceased’s estate this could involve lengthy court proceedings with no guarantee of success”. Don’t put it off till tomorrow, contact John Staniland on 0800 246 1012

David Carruthers, Conexo owner and an experienced traveller, says “We have a massive advantage over the major high street agencies who want to sell you their in-house products whether that is right for their clients or not. We are an independent travel agency and can find you a holiday from one of over 400 tour operators we deal with.” Conexo Travel’s vast array of holidays encompasses the big well known tour operators but also many independent ‘niche’ companies who you might not be aware of and who can offer something completely different for your holiday.

f you are baby boomer by Christine Parker or born before the 1970’s BDS (GDC 72136) you may well be. Even if your musical tastes are more refined! Fluoride toothpaste was widely introduced in the early 1970’s and this resulted in a huge reduction in the level of dental decay in children. This combined with greater emphasis on children brushing twice a day helped significantly improve their oral health. This population are now in their 40’s and still have significantly fewer fillings than their predecessors. Sadly those of us born before the introduction of fluoride toothpaste tended to need more treatment earlier and this has contributed to a mouthful of filled teeth, many of which are the silver amalgam type, hence the term ‘heavy metal’. Whilst I never recommend the wholesale removal of silver fillings in favour of the white there are often ways to improve the aesthetics of the smile and to replace missing teeth so that you can feel confident and chew properly. So if you would like advice on what is possible for you then why not give us a call and we can make sure its just you that’s rocking and not your teeth! Nursery Boasts New Development

“Over six years ago, while on maternity leave from my teaching career, I was searching to find the right nursery for my own baby. It was at this point I had the realisation that I could establish my own nursery; somewhere special where other parents would value the facilities, care and learning opportunities that my background equipped me to create”. set time aside to think about your aims, set realistic goals and consider how you can achieve these. Get your books in order – the thought of bookkeeping may send shivers down your spine, but good records can give you a picture of how your business is performing, pinpoint problems and identify potential opportunities. Keep ALL your receipts – you will be surprised how those small amounts you spend on stamps, stationery and petrol soon add up. Make sure you keep receipts for anything you buy for your business these can help reduce your tax bill.

NEW EARSWICK MUSICALS ARE PROUD TO BRING TO YORK THE WORLD’S MOST LOVED MUSICAL

M

eet Me in St Louis will be staged at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre on the 27th to 30th April.

The story is set in a year of the life of the Smith family who live in St Louis just before the turn of the century. Life is fantastic for the Smith family and everything seems to be going well until Mr Smith comes home and announces that the family are all moving to New York. From that moment on their world is turned upside down. The story is focused around the Smiths’ children, Lon, Rose, Agnus, Tootie and Esther, (the role made famous in the movie by Judy Garland). Other wonderful characters include Grandpa Smith as the voice of reason who adores his grandchildren and Katie the Irish cook will keep everyone laughing with her wit and social satire. The show just like the movie, is a beautiful coming of age love story about Esther and John Truitt, the boy next door, and Esther’s sister Rose with Warren Sheffield, a ‘well to do’ eligible young man. Meet Me in St Louis offers some amazing show stopping songs including The Trolly Song, The Boy Next Door’, Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas and of course the famous title song, Meet Me in St Louis. Directed by Ann McCreadie and Musical Director Barbra Chan the show promises to be an amazing piece of theatre and by using the latest techniques in projection will ensure that we capture the fun and pace of the movie with some amazing special effects to add to the excitement. Broken Down? Washer? Dryer? Cooker? Fridge? WHAT IS A 2 IN 1 BURGLARY? By Jimmy Hannon, PCSO 5637 During February there has been an increase within York in what is known as 2 in 1 burglaries. A 2 in 1 burglary is when offenders enter your property and steal keys to a car parked at the property and then leave in the vehicle. They very rarely attempt to take anything else within the property. In York we have seen these offences take place in the early evenings. On some occasions the offenders have not had to force entry into a property as the doors have been unlocked.

DISCOUNT FOR 2 OR MORE ROOMS

Our advice is to make sure that your property is secure, doors and windows locked, even during the early evening when you are in. This will more than likely prevent any offence taking place as those intending to steal your vehicle will not want to make a lot of noise breaking in and disturb you. Many of us will keep our car keys in the same place every day, and more often than not that is near to the front or rear door of our property for convenience. It is a good idea to keep your car keys out of sight. This would only take a matter of seconds to do and any person who did intend to steal your vehicle keys would not want to spend a long time within your property looking for them. Almost all vehicles now are very very difficult to start without keys which is why 2 in 1 burglaries have become more common as should they wish to steal your car they would need the keys to move the vehicle. New and valuable vehicles are often targeted but there have been examples of older vehicles having been taken.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving

people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas

and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family

of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

GARDENING GUIDE

Go On, Grow Your Own! By Pippa Greenwood

Enjoying a delicious meal which includes some home grown ingredients is a wonderful feeling – it fills you full of just the right sort of pride. It simply feels good to indulge in a bit of Grow Your Own and reap the rewards. You may well have been sowing and potting on vegetables for a while now, but if you’re behind schedule or haven’t produced vegetables before, don’t panic – there’s still time to grow just about any crop this year. Most plants can be raised from seed now, but there are a few that are likely to give

a better yield with an earlier start. Instead, buy in plants of crops such as tomatoes, sweet peppers, chilli peppers, melons and aubergines over the next month.

really comes into its own.

Some vegetables can be directly sown now into well-prepared garden soil in a suitable spot in all but the coolest gardens – beetroot, lettuce, beans, peas, carrots, rocket, spinach to name but a few. Slightly more tender crops such as sweetcorn, squash and courgettes fare better if given a bit of extra heat when you are germinating the seeds, which is where an electrically heated propagator

The seedlings may then need pricking out and potting on until they are sturdy enough to live in the great outdoors, but try to ‘harden off’ the young plants before placing them into their final positions as they may be damaged by cold, wind or rain. Put the young plants outside on warm days once the weather has stabilised, and bring them back under cover at night. Leave them outside after a week or so, covering them with fleece at night to let them acclimatise.

YOUR LOCAL GARDENING GUIDE >>

To save time, you can buy in small plants and you will get a good range. Garden-ready plants can be planted out immediately and, provided you follow the instructions, keep them well-watered during drier weather and apply feed at regular intervals, you will soon be harvesting crops such as climbing French and runner beans, tomatoes, sweetcorn, sugar-snap peas, peppers, chillies, onions, melons, butternut squash, beetroot and courgettes. Most vegetables need a good fertile soil and a sunny or partly shaded spot, so choose your growing area with care. If space is limited, don’t worry – most vegetables will do well in good sized containers (minimum 30cm x 30cm x 30cm) with good-quality compost, though bigger pots will need less frequent watering. But, whether you plant and sow vegetables in pots, tubs, greenhouses or open ground, the end result will be gorgeous tasting, super-fresh vegetables. So go on, get growing! A

nother outdoor season looms for this small but friendly club. Formed in the mid 1930’s and still in the same location despite all the building that has taken place all around. Fortunately the old wooden hut which was the changing room has been replaced by a modern, well furnished pavilion thanks to a grant from Ryedale Council.

We play in three leagues, Viz, BATA Gas, Ryedale Veterans and the York & District Private Clubs and other knock-out competitions. Like most other clubs we would like new members either experienced bowlers or new (Come and Try) bowlers. Men and women all welcome. We have an excellent green maintained by our own members

to a very high standard. Weather permitting we will open on Saturday 16th April and we have a club night every Tuesday at 6.30pm where coaching for inexperienced bowlers will be available. Our first league match is on 4th May. We are situated near Strensall Bus Terminus, 50 yards down Brecks Lane. If you are interested, come and have a go.

MOTORING

Range Rover On Test

By James Baggott

Then there’s the size – I know Range Rovers are massive, but when it comes to getting a ski trip’s worth of luggage inside, it coped admirably. Despite using up the entire boot space there was ample room inside – enough to curl up for a snooze in the back and enjoy the equally cosseting rear seats when my wife drove. For its size it’s no slouch. Our test car had the delightful 4.4-litre SDV8. Despite only returning 26mpg, with a top speed of 135mph and a 0-60mph time of 6.8 seconds, it’s brisk enough for French Autoroutes. It piles on speed in a smooth and linear fashion, quietly and without fuss, whilst adding to the feeling of luxury travel. It’s the dreaded question that anyone even remotely connected to cars fears more than any other: what’s your favourite car? But finally I might have the answer: the Range Rover. Not the Sport or Evoque but the good old fashioned, full fat Rangie. A looming family holiday looming involving a 1,500mile trip gave the perfect excuse to borrow the car, and after two 13-hour shifts behind the wheel I can honestly say there’s nothing else I’d rather have been in. Here’s why. First, it’s super comfortable. The front seats in our Range Rover were heated and cooled and had more adjustments than a home hi-fi amplifier from the 1980s. The huge armchair like seats with cushioned headrests never dulled a muscle and left us with no aches and pains. With a five-year-old on board, the £7,300 entertainment pack (yes, you read that right) was a blessing. Two 10.2-inch rear screens and wireless headphones meant Finding Nemo could work his fishy magic at keeping the Are We Nearly There Yets at bay until at least Dover. The multimedia system might be showing its age a little but it works well. It takes seconds to hook your phone up for music streaming, the satnav might look a little dated but it got us to France, Switzerland and home without fail and it’s simple to set a DVD running for the rear occupants while listening to Dad FM in the front.

However, what really sets the Range Rover apart are the little touches. Things like the soft-close doors, the illuminated logos projected onto the floor by the wing mirrors at night, and the front seat armrests that adjust to the perfect height. I love the fridge in the centre console, the cameras all around the car that make it a doddle to park, and the split tailgate that automatically opens and closes at the touch of a button. But above all it’s the fact that despite all this luxury and Rolls Royce-rivaling opulence, it’s still so utterly capable off road. As we arrived in Villars, Switzerland, the snow was falling heavily and cars were being abandoned up the mountain as snow chains failed to do their jobs. But not the Range Rover. A flick of the all terrain response button to its Snow & Ice setting and away we went. So there you have it. The one car I would buy if I had to live it with it for the rest of my life. Just as long as I could afford the £109,710 for the pleasure…

St Leonard’s Hospice Caring for Local People

Veterinary Nurses work alongside the Veterinary Surgeons to provide a high standard of care to patients. While the main role of the Veterinary Nurse within practices goes on behind the scenes such as providing skilled supportive care for sick animals, monitoring patients during anaesthesia and much more; Veterinary Nurses play an important role in the education of owners of good standards of animal care. For that reason Nurse clinics such as Puppy health checks, post-operative checks, dental checks, weight clinics and mobility clinics can go a long way to help keep your pet happy and heathy. The road to becoming a Registered Veterinary Nurse requires a lot of hard work, and dedication to job which includes practical assessments, theoretical training and exams, which is an intense three year course. Nurse clinics are a great way of finding out preventative care and advice for your pet. For example our cuddle clinics can inform you how to prevent a wide range of problems in later life and give you advice to ease your worries about anything you may have about your new puppy. Senior clinics are used to identify and prevent the development of age-related problems and our obesity clinics are used to treat and prevent the recurrence of weight problems. For you, the owner Nurse clinics are a great way for a low- cost and often free advice about the best care for your pet, from a trusted and knowledgeable source. It can also be a nice and stress free visit for you and your pet enabling you both to get to know the nursing team, which you may not see on your normal visits to see the vet. At Station House Vets we have nurse clinics which are run by our professional and dedicated nursing team providing a large range of clinics for your pets, which include weight clinics, cuddle clinics (for puppies), worming clinics and many more. Many of the sessions are free of charge, or carry a small charge. Just give us a call to book an appointment or to find out more about the clinics which are normally slotted between 3.00pm-4.00pm on weekdays and 8.15am-11.15am on Saturdays. CAKE & BAKE

RHUBARB & COCONUT MERINGUE CAKE

There’s plenty of field grown rhubarb about this time of year and it’s perfect for pies, puddings and cakes. When buying choose firm plump stalks of rhubarb – avoid any that are floppy or bruised.

INGREDIENTS: • 100g butter, softened • 100g light soft brown sugar • 2 medium eggs, beaten • 50g self-raising flour • 50g ground hazelnuts • Zest of 1 orange • 300g rhubarb, trimmed and chopped • 2 tbsp caster sugar FOR THE TOPPING • 2 medium egg whites • 50g caster sugar • 75g desiccated coconut • Whipped cream or Greek yoghurt, to serve

Serves 6. Ready in 1 hour 15 minutes

Preheat the oven to 180C, fan 160C, Gas 4. Place a baking sheet in the oven to heat up. Grease a 20cm round spring-form cake tin and line the base with baking paper. To make the base, place the butter and brown sugar in a bowl and beat together until pale and creamy. Gradually beat in the eggs then sift over the flour and fold in. Gently fold in the ground hazelnuts. Spread the mixture in an even layer in the base of the prepared tin. Arrange the rhubarb over the top and sprinkle over the 2 tbsp caster sugar and orange zest. To make the topping place the egg whites in a clean grease-free bowl and, using an electric hand held mixer, whisk until stiffly peaking. Whisk in the caster sugar until glossy then fold in the coconut. Spread the coconut meringue over the top of the rhubarb. Place the tin on the hot baking sheet and bake for 35-45 minutes or until the topping is crisp and golden. Serve warm or cold with whipped cream or Greek yoghurt.

TIP: Placing the cake tin on a hot baking sheet will help to ensure that the hazelnut sponge base is cooked through.

Jewel is very loving, friendly and great with people, she just needs a little help to be around other animals as she was not socialised when she was young. Due to this she would need to be the only pet in the home. She will however walk well on the lead with other dogs. Any children in the home should be of secondary school age and over. Billy is a big, strong dog that still thinks he is a puppy. It would be great if he could be adopted by people who have experience with large dog breeds and are willing to do some training with him to help to control his excitement and to walk nicely on a lead. He could possibly live with a tolerant dog and children of senior school age because of his size.

JOIN OUR LOTTERY! We are your local RSPCA, and take care of up to 75 dogs, 72 cats and many small animals.

LIVE, LOCAL AND LOVING LIFE IN NORTH YORKSHIRE

S

ince Vale Radio hit the airwaves of DAB Digital Radio back in October 2015, we have loved every minute of being a part of local life from supporting local charities and helping them raise extra cash at events to giving them a truly powerful voice locally. Last year Vale Radio helped local charities raise over £60,000 and already this year we’ve helped raise over £46,000 for the likes of Ryedale Special Families, Martin’s House Hospice, York Flood Victims and many more. We have and are hosting many events in 2016, including York Floods Fund Raiser at The Ainsty, Squire’s Egg Run in Malton, Strensall Carnival, Apollo Festival, York Rescue Boat Annual Charity Ball, KirkbyMoorside and Thirsk Christmas Lights, Haxby Carnival and many more! The radio station broadcasts to a huge audience on DAB Digital Radio, but also on-line through our website and our free mobile app, downloadable through all app stores. To keep the radio station running costs over £6,000 a month, and we are able to cover this through advertising, sponsorship and community partnerships, with prices starting from just £25 a week. Plus, with our amazing partnership with Handy Mag, we are able to offer North Yorkshire Businesses some mega deals. To find out more about Vale Radio and what we can do for you and your group, event or business, please call 01904 765 900, visit www. thevaleonline.com or email studio@ thevaleonline.com www.thehandymag.co.uk • 01653 690859 • 79
