elcome to our April edition.
I probably say this every year, but I love April! Everywhere is fresh and new, lambs, swallows, leaves on the tress, sunshine and longer days all go towards making us feel better. Shake off the winter blues and go out and enjoy the spring!

Of course this year there are many reasons to enjoy April – Easter, cycling galore, and lots of local places and events to take part in and visit. All of the details are in our listings and throughout the magazine. Nicky and I are looking forward to seeing the musical Annie at Joseph Rowntree Theatre next week. Nicky is horrified that I have never seen this musical, despite loving a good sing! If you missed this production there are plenty more opportunities to enjoy an evening at the theatre during April. Am-dram seems to be thriving in York with a number of great productions coming to Joseph Rowntree Theatre over the next couple of months. There is Dr Dolittle (cover photo), Peter Pan and an evening of favourites from Gilbert & Sullivan operas to choose from. Don’t forget ‘you’re never fully dressed without a smile’ so go and get yourself some tickets for a great evening of local entertainment! All ticket details are in our pages this month. This month we’re giving both advertisers and community events more profile through our Facebook page. As with our Twitter feed, please look us up, ‘like us’ and then be at the front row for updates of what’s happening in your area. Make sure that this spring you make time for yourself and family to have some local fun. Time races and waits for no one…. Well done to Jacqui Ward of York for winning our February competition. Have a great month!

A Tree House in Memory of Jake Jake's Story
J
ake Bradley Smith was born on 1st November 2012. When he was only 4 months old, Jake had his first prolonged seizure lasting 45 minutes. Two weeks later he had another which led to another hospital admission and many tests including 2 lumbar punctures, an EEG, and an MRI. More seizures followed and in July 2013 he was diagnosed with epilepsy. Jake’s consultant was convinced he had a much more complex condition, and more tests confirmed a diagnosis of Dravet Syndrome. As a family we had so many exciting adventures along with his brother, George, and sister, Olivia.

We have so many wonderful photos; he loved having his picture taken! On Saturday 17th December, we went to visit Father Christmas at the Rock Church in York, followed by a family tea out and a lovely evening at home together. That night Jake went to bed so very happy. Sadly the following morning he didn’t wake up due to a seizure during the night which proved to be too much for him (SUDEP-Sudden unexplained death in Epilepsy). We have been approached with an idea to build a tree house in Jakes memory at the front of Robert Wilkinson School in Strensall. The group ‘Jakes Treehouse’ has been set up to support the many fundraising events that we will be hosting. Ideas so far include; Bric a Brac sale, 5k bra walk through Strensall, a challenging bike ride for the more athletic supporters, bake sales, treasure hunt, lads/ dads football tournament, tea towels with preschool hand prints, a children’s party celebrating Jake, Inflatable/bubble run, copper jar challenge and a zumbathon!! Should we end up in the fortunate position to raise more money than required, we will donate the money equally to Dravet Syndrome UK and York Inspirational Kids, both of which helped us as a family and gave us opportunities to do things that we may not have done otherwise. You can support the appeal through a justgiving page: justgiving.com/ crowdfunding/jakestreehouse2017 By Jake’s Mum and Dad

Talk to the Animals Doctor Dolittle - 26th to 29th April Dr Dolittle is the classic tale of kindness to animals that trot, crawl, and fly onto the stage as this Broadway-sized family musical arrives in York. NEMusicals will bring you this all singing, all dancing musical that is packed with some of the most amazing moments ever to be seen in the Joseph Rowntree theatre. Dr Dolittle (Steve Tearle ) who can really talk to the animals, takes the audience on a journey, from the small English village of Puddleby-on-the-Marsh to the far corners of the world. With unbelievable special effects and the most amazing and unique animals York has ever seen. With brilliant songs such as Talk to the Animals, Something in your Smile, and the beautiful, When I look in Your Eyes, and of course the famous Never Seen Anything Like It!. It’s mad, it’s funny, but it’s brilliant so book your tickets early to avoid disappointment!
Ever wanted to try Bowls? New season at Strensall Bowling Club
At the start of last season, it was doubtful if Strensall Bowling Club would be able to raise enough players to compete in the three leagues that they enter each year. They eventually decided to just ‘give it a go’ which turned out to be a decision well made, as the 2016 season proved to be their best to date! They successfully won the league in the York & District Private Clubs league, gaining promotion, and finished runners up in the Ryedale Veterans league also gaining promotion. They also qualified for the Champion of Champions play-off and finished in their highest ever position in the Bata Gas sponsored Ryedale league. A very impressive season for such a small club.
Members are now looking forward to a new outdoor season where the opposition will prove more difficult to compete against. During the winter months, the dedicated greens staff have been busy maintaining the equipment, trimming hedges and trees and fixing soffits to the Clubhouse, which is situated on Brecks Lane, just down from the Strensall Bus Terminus. The new season opens at 2pm on Saturday 15 April, with the first match on the 26th April against Stillington. The Whistlestop competition is on the 6th August and due to its popularity you are advised to book your place early. Details will be sent out later in the year. Come along to the Open Day on Saturday 15 April or any Tuesday evening at 6.30pm. New members are very welcome, either experienced bowlers or first timers who want just to try. Interiors Trends for Spring 2017 by Sarah Clark owner at Interiors at Nine to Eleven
S
pring is the time when many of us will give our homes a makeover. So we thought it would be good to have a look at some of the top interiors trends of the moment. Whilst 2016 was all about metallics such as copper, and unusual colours like rose quartz and serenity blue, it seems that 2017 will take an earthier turn. Terracotta looks to be big news in 2017, and its rich oranges and browns offer a pleasing sense of ruggedness to any interior. Whether it’s incorporated in a bowl or a lamp, terracotta is something that we’re going to be seeing a lot more of this year. 2017 will also introduce plenty of ‘ethnic’ designs into our ceramics and soft furnishings. With a freewheeling use of colour and some funky patterns, it will give our homes a breath of fresh air!
us all the chance to soften up our interiors. Some of the lovely curtains from Sanderson’s Waterperry collection illustrate this perfectly by using delicate shades and floral themes to welcome the light of spring into your home. And finally, whilst we’re waiting for the warmer months to arrive, it’s reassuring to find that classic fabrics like velvet and wool will maintain their popularity throughout 2017.
Marble is another traditional texture that is making it big this Spring. Although white marble-topped tables are a design classic, this luxurious stone is being reimagined in surprising new colours, patterns and shapes for 2017. There will also be plenty of floral designs that give

he Jorvik Gilbert and Sullivan Company is an inclusive theatre Company solely dedicated to performing the works of William Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan in the York area. The Company has built up a core repertoire of popular solos, ensembles and choruses which it uses to produce Gilbert and Sullivan Selection concerts in churches, village halls and other venues in the region.
members of all ages and abilities. There are no auditions for chorus members as they believe that anyone who wants to turn up and sing should be able to! Rehearsals are on Monday evenings in Huntington Methodist Church from 7.30pm-9.30pm. Contact the group by email info@jorvikgsc.org. uk or find more details online at www.jorvikgsc.org.uk.
Next month the Company returns to Joseph Rowntree Theatre with a selection of Gilbert and Sullivan favourites, set around a Four Weddings and a Funeral Theme. Is your conservatory the perfect place to be this Spring?
W
ith the days getting longer and the sun making an appearance now is the time to be enjoying your conservatory! But many of you are probably saying it’s too cold or full of condensation. Now is the perfect time to fit a Wetheralds insulated roof to your conservatory – fitted within a week you will be able to enjoy this spring and every other season with a comfortable room every day of the year. The main reasons why our customers look to convert their conservatory to a solid tiled roof are: • Too cold in winter and too hot in summer, • The roof is coming to the end of its life, • The conservatory just isn’t an enjoyable room to be in! Based just outside York (but installing nationwide), we handle everything from start to finish; building your roof on site to structural engineers’ specifications and arranging visits from your local council to comply with building regulations. We make sure the skip arrives on time and our own teams of experienced fitters always tidy up before they leave! Why customers across Yorkshire choose Wetheralds: • The quality of the materials used and our professional partnerships ensure you have a wonderful new extension to your home. • All our fitters are employed by Wetheralds and have many years of experience fitting new roofs – so you will benefit from a high quality build. • Our competitive pricing and excellent customer service ensure you get the room you want, with the peace of mind that Wetheralds consistently deliver a new roof to solve all your existing problems.
“I had several quotes for a new roof and was impressed by what Wetheralds offered including a building regulations certificate, which no other company had mentioned. The communication from Wetheralds both before and after completion was flawless. It has made a big difference to the temperature in the conservatory which was icy cold to use in winter. The council surveyor was also impressed by the speed and quality of their work, which wasn’t compromised in any way I am so pleased I had the roof done and chose Wetheralds as my contractors.” Sharon Hall, December 2016 If you would like to turn your conservatory into a new Garden Room this Spring get in touch with Wetheralds now for a free quote – call 0800 612 3771 or visit Wetheraldsroofsystems.co.uk for more customer reviews and information.

OTHER WORLDLY WONDERS By Mary Mahon

arth; the only known planet inhabited with life, our only home? Maybe not for much longer. Scientists have now detected well over 3000 planets outside our own solar system and NASA’s recent discovery of seven new, earth-like planets could potentially harbour galactic life! From cavedwellers with pointed sticks to intergalactic explorers, we’ve made vast leaps in scientific discoveries. Inventions such as the Hubble Space telescope, space shuttles and satellites allow us to explore beyond our own realm to otherworldly interstellar wonders! And the discoveries we have made are phenomenal…. On Earth, when it rains we get drenched in water. It’s cold and wet, yet at least it doesn’t bruise us. On Saturn and Jupiter, atmospheric data indicates that diamonds rain from the sky like crystal hailstones in a utopian paradise! According to scientists, it is the most likely form of precipitation in our solar system.

Similarly, some comets have been spotted with ‘cryovolcaneos’ on their surface that on eruption stream torrents of ice rather than lava! Meteorite dust is easily obtainable, yet stardust from a Neutron star would be far more fascinating. The once-exploded supernovas collapse and compress, and so in result become so extraordinarily dense that one teaspoon of a Neutron star on Earth would weigh a billion tonnes! When a day feels like it’s dragging on at school or work, be thankful you’re not on Venus. One year on Venus lasts 225 Earth days, yet one day lasts a lengthy 243 Earth days, making one day on Venus longer than a year! Luckily, we don’t have to suffer through Mondays on Venus… When you begin to look past our own planet, life is put into perspective. Gazing up to the skies above us rather than at the dirt below our feet truly reveals the triviality of money and power, border controls and raging wars. In the words of Carl Sagan, “Our planet is a lonely speck in the great enveloping cosmic dark… there is no hint that help will come from elsewhere to save us”, so all we can do is embrace and enjoy our fleeting time here.

Jacqui is braving all on the 23rd April when she takes part in the London Marathon in support of the Wilberforce Trust Dual Sensory Mobile Unit. Jacqui has been hard at work training each evening until last week, when she fell ill with a cold and flu bug which halted her workouts. But now she’s very much back on track and conscious that she needs to put in extra effort in an otherwise hectic schedule to stay on track. “My aim is to beat the time of 4 hours 43 minutes which I set the last time I ran the Marathon 6 years

Short Story
The Last of the Wild Chickens
Vinny burst through the door of the community centre. “You’ll never guess what’s on top of the bike shed!” At the mention of the bike shed Eunice’s heart skipped a beat; had Vinny discovered her guilty secret? She’d been stacking chairs, assuming that all the members of her ‘Trimmer You!’ slimming club had departed. It had been a tough session. She’d had to be particularly strict with the group about avoiding the temptation of chocolate over the Bank Holiday weekend. There had been tears. Now Vinny was back, his ‘Trimmer of the Week’ rosette flapping in the breeze. “An actual chicken!” he continued breathlessly. “Sat there bold as brass.” Eunice stared at him, her mind racing. A chicken was not what she was expecting. “Don’t be daft,” she reasoned. “There’s no way a chicken could get up there - they can’t fly.” “Try telling that to this one,” Vinny laughed. “It’s probably just a pigeon,” Eunice said firmly, hoping this would be enough to make Vinny finally go home. “I’m no Bill Oddie, but I think I know the difference,” he said. “Come and have a look if you don’t believe me.” Very reluctantly Eunice pulled on her anorak and followed Vinny to the bike shed. A fat brown bantam sat clucking on the flat roof admiring the view. “I wonder where it’s come from,” Eunice said, her eyes searching the rest of the roof. “Someone round here must keep chickens.”
“Perhaps it’s been living wild,” Vinny said. “A chicken wouldn’t last five minutes in the wild.” “Well they had to live in the wild originally,” Vinny answered. “This might be the last of the wild chickens.” “We’ll have to get it down,” Eunice said irritably, reminded, more than ever, how annoying Vinny could be. “We can’t lock up and leave it there. Can you reach up and grab it?” “I’m not sure.” Vinny looked worried. “I’ve never held a bird before.” Eunice did not find this at all surprising. The bird ruffled her wings and stared at them indignantly. “Just grab her firmly around her sides,” Eunice said. “I’ll go and phone the caretaker to see if he knows who she belongs to.” Eunice went back into the community hall and paced up and down. She needed time to think. Within moments Vinny popped his head around the door. “Mystery solved!” he said cheerfully. “This lady walked into the car park and asked if I’d seen her chicken.” “Who was it?” Eunice hoped her ordeal was finally over. “Someone from the village,” Vinny said. “She said chickens can fly, they’re just not very good at it. Apparently this one’s always trying to escape.” “So it wasn’t a wild chicken then?” Eunice smirked. “No, but I think it was a magic one. Look...” From behind his back Vinny produced a large Easter egg wrapped in pink foil. “It had rolled down the side of the shed. That chicken must have laid it.” Eunice stared first at Vinny in disbelief, and then at the incriminating confectionary. She had one last trick up her sleeve. “A chocolate egg laying chicken!” she gasped. “I’ve heard of them but I’ve never seen one in real life.” She held out her hand for the egg. “I’d better take care of that.” “What are you going to do with it?” Vinny whispered as though afraid to wake it. “Do you think it will hatch?” “Maybe,” Eunice said, “particularly if I take it home and put it somewhere nice and warm.” Which, in a roundabout way, had been Eunice’s plan for that egg all along. Travel advice From David Carruthers of Conexo Travel “If you don't book with a travel agent you're on your own!” CLONED WEBSITES
E
arlier this year we learned of the failure of All Leisure Group and how the holiday arrangements of thousands of people had been impacted. Coming in the first week of 2017 it coincided with a warning from ABTA of an increase in travel scams. With a third of summer holidays typically booked during January and February, ABTA is concerned that people looking for a bargain may be duped by fraudsters – travel fraud is up 425% year on year and costs holidaymakers £11.5 million according to the City of London Police. ABTA has put together the following list of warning scams and signs to look out for: Businesses not providing financial protection In 2016 more than 100 travel businesses were identified by ABTA as selling package holidays without having proper financial protection in place, and referred to the relevant authorities. All package holidays sold in the UK should include protection, where holidaymakers are not only entitled to a refund or repatriation, should their travel company go out of business, but also other specific legal rights, should there be a problem with the holiday. All ABTA Members provide protection for their package holidays. People booking a holiday that is ATOL protected should always receive an ATOL Certificate.
SCAM WEBSITES
Some websites are set up purely to defraud customers, and these scam or fraudulent websites are an area of growing concern for ABTA.
These are websites that are copies of a genuine site with subtle changes made. Fraudsters can clone legitimate websites but will change the last part of the web address, such as from .co.uk to . org. They can also produce a realistic-looking website, but with the spelling of the address slightly different from that of the authentic site. Check that the website address that appears in the top window is correct. If you are suspicious of a website, carry out a web search to see if you can find out whether or not it is fraudulent.

Be suspicious when the only payment option is a bank transfer. Not only is this an indication that no bank is prepared to provide credit card facilities, but if you are dealing with a scammer it will be virtually impossible to get your money back.
FALSE CREDENTIALS
Some fraudulent companies may falsely use logos of official bodies such as ATOL, or of organisations such as ABTA and IATA. If the company you are using claims to be a member of a trade association, you should be able to easily verify membership on the trade association’s website. Mark Tanzer, ABTA Chief Executive, commented: “Booking a holiday should be an exciting experience, however it can be ruined by clever and unscrupulous scams. We have seen a significant increase in fraudulent activity over the past year, so we are encouraging all holidaymakers to stop and think about the company they are booking with. I would encourage people to book with an ABTA travel company, so they can rest assured that their holiday company is genuine and covered by our Code of Conduct.” For more information please contact David on 01904 767511
Book your Jet2 Holiday
At Conexo Travel Your local Haxby travel agent The success of Jet2Holidays over the last eight years has made others sit up and take notice. Founded in 2002, parent company Jet2 operated their first flight from Leeds Bradford to Amsterdam on 12 February 2003. In 2007 Jet2Holidays was formed and they are now ranked as third largest tour operator in the UK. Perhaps the success of Jet2Holidays is behind the recent decision by both Thomas Cook (which includes Co-Operative Travel) and Thomson to stop selling Jet2Holidays in their stores. Because Jet2holidays wraps everything up in one package, holidaymakers have access to great value package breaks across thousands of 2-5 star hotels, with Jet2.com flights, industry leading 22kg baggage allowance and airport transfers included, through a ÂŁ60 per person deposit. The good news is that you can still book your Jet2Holiday with us in Haxby! Conexo Travel, like Jet2Holidays, has enjoyed a great period of growth, culminating in record trading months for the start of 2017. As well as being able to book your holiday conveniently with friendly staff, Conexo Travel guarantee you will never pay more for your Jet2Holiday than if you booked it online. We take care of all of the paperwork, special requests and offer other special services not available to online bookers. Conexo Travel is delighted to be the only retail travel agency in the locality booking customers on Jet2Holidays, but remember they also deal with over 400 tour operators meaning you also get the largest choice of holidays in the area as well as the best holiday deals.

ut out the expensive tickets and snacks and just enjoy pure great cinema at your leisure. With tickets costing £4 for non-members/£3 for members and reasonably priced snacks and drinks from the Folk Hall’s licensed bar, you can enjoy an inexpensive evening out with friends and family watching a wide range of curated films every month! We have had brilliant success with our kid’s films thanks to the City of York Council and Friends of New Earswick School (FONES) who have really made this a community event. We most recently screened the beloved Inside Out and we are looking forward to seeing a great turn out at our final kids event on 9th April with Finding Dory. Our upcoming film on 28th April is the classic Cinema Paradiso: A celebration of youth, love, friendship and the everlasting magic of the movies. A film director remembers his childhood at Cinema Paradiso where Alfredo, the projectionist, first brought about his love of films. He returns home to his village for the first time after 30 years and is reminded of his first love, Elena. Film at the Folk Hall is a volunteer led community cinema run from the picturesque and historic setting of New Earswick Folk Hall. Having received funding and state of the art equipment from the British Film Institute and the John Lewis Community Fund over the last year they now independently screen films the last Friday of every month. ou might be wondering how you can eat chocolate and not increase your risk of cavities. Whilst we cannot guarantee your waistline won’t suffer, we can show you how you can enjoy the odd treat and not increase your risk of decay.
by Christine Parker BDS (GDC 72136)
Firstly, don’t eat chocolate straight from the fridge it can get very hard and break or chip your teeth and fillings. If you break the side off a tooth it can mean a crown which can be very expensive, so let your chocolate reach room temperature before you eat it. Secondly your rate of decay is related to how often you eat or drink, not how much. This means that if you want some of your chocolate egg, have it straight after a meal then you won’t cause any additional damage to your teeth. If you wait for half an hour and then have even a small piece it will extend your period of attack on your teeth by the same period. If you wait 2 hours it will cause a further attack of at least 90 minutes.

Contrary to popular belief brushing after eating can be quite damaging to your teeth as the enamel is weakened by the acid attack. It won’t stop tooth decay either because it is impossible to clean every single surface of the tooth enough to stop the process. So try to keep sweet food and drinks to mealtimes and give yourself something to smile about. For an appointment to discuss your specific needs please call Jan at Howardian Dental.

Gardening Flower Power
on plenty of growth before they start to perform, once they have reached flowering size, they’ll just keep on and on performing! There are lots to choose from, including lupins, silene, Echinaceae, geranium, perennial poppies, delphiniums, gaillardia, hollyhocks, rudbeckia and salvia. Pay a visit to your local garden centre or study the pages of some seed catalogues and start plotting and planning what you’d like; you could save yourself a fortune, and all from a packet or two of seed.
Blooming Hollyhock Flower You can grow a huge range of flowers from seed at home. It’s amazingly inexpensive and surprisingly easy too. If you’re after some long-term residents for your flower borders then rather than paying several pounds for each and every plant you buy, why not be a bit more adventurous and grow your own from seed? Just about every perennial flower - that’s those that last for years and don’t have to be replaced on an annual basis - is available to grow from seed, and although you’ll have to wait until the plants have put
To get started, all you need are some containers into which you can sow the seed – I like to use half-sized seed trays, RootTrainers or smaller individual cells. You will also need some good quality compost and your chosen seeds. The job will be all the easier and better if you have something to tamp down the compost too, plus labels, a permanent marker, a dibber and some vermiculite (for covering seeds that need some light to germinate well).

Compost often has a fair number of lumps in it, so sieving it through a compost sieve (which has much larger holes than a kitchen sieve) will allow you to remove the larger lumps, leaving fine compost perfect for seed sowing. If you sieve it straight into the pots, cells or trays, make sure you collect up any that falls on the surface below. Once the compost is in the tray or pot, firm it down so that there are no large gaps beneath the surface, as you don’t want subsidence later on. Levelling it off will make it easier to ensure the seeds are all sown evenly and at the same depth. You can make your own tamper using a piece of wood with a small block of wood nailed to it to make a ‘handle’. When it comes to sowing the seed, it is worth remembering that it is easier to look after the seedlings later on if the seed has been sown in rows, rather than randomly scattered. Straight rows are easily made using a plastic plant label. Check the seed packets for the precise depths at which the seed needs to be sown as this will differ from variety to variety. If you are sowing seeds in
YORK
small cells then it is easier to make the holes using a dibber. If you don’t have one, a pencil works perfectly well! RootTrainers are particularly useful for larger seeds such as sunflowers. Sowing the seed thinly along the drills in a seed tray makes life easier later on. Sown too densely, the seedlings that emerge will need more thinning out, and will be more likely to become drawn, leggy and weak, whereas given a bit more space they tend to be a lot sturdier. Once in place, just cover the seed with compost. If you are sowing larger seed into cells, just pop the seeds in to the prepared holes and cover to the required depth. The ideal sowing depth will be stated on the seed packet – it is not too exact a science, but it is best to get it about right! When all the seeds are sown, use a watering can with the rose attached to water the compost thoroughly. If the seed sown was quite small then it is best to water the compost by standing the tray in a shallow tray or bowl of water, and allow the compost to absorb the water from below – this way the seeds are less likely to be displaced. >>

>> Finally, don’t forget to label your seed trays clearly, ideally with a permanent marker. You may think you’ll remember what is in each tray, but seedlings don’t always resemble the full-grown plants that closely. Many perennials need heat for the seed to germinate reliably. Put the trays, pots or cells into a propagator, standing each on moist capillary matting. Once the seedlings appear, gradually lower the temperature and then prick each one out into its own pot. Allow them to grow on, keeping them fed and watered as necessary. In just a few weeks or months you can have some great plants ready for the garden. Motoring New Audi Q5
for active lane assist, pre-sense assistance which helps detect if a crash is imminent and can apply the brakes for you, and cross-traffic assistance at the rear that will help when pulling out of parking spaces. In slow moving traffic it’s even partly autonomous, slowing down and speeding up in jams while keeping you in your lane.
R
eplacing ultra-successful cars is never easy for a manufacturer, but that’s the challenge Audi has faced with the Q5, the brand’s best-selling SUV. Built at the manufacturer’s most advanced ‘smart factory’ in Mexico, the refreshed off-roader is packed with clever technology, features revised engines and a fresh look that the maker hopes will continue to win over buyers. But has it done enough? LOOKS AND IMAGE The new Q5 may be a little less flashy than its Jaguar F-Pace rival, but that smart new octagonal nose, dramatic headlights and sharp body creases give it fantastic presence on the road. That’s helped by a wonderfully squat stance and perfect proportions. Inside the quality is clear. Solid, good quality materials are everywhere and the leather seats are comfortable and perfectly adjustable. There is plenty of space around the driver and logically placed controls for the multimedia system. There’s also a three-zone climate control system, an optional Bang & Olufsen sound system, and the optional virtual cockpit, which replaces the dials with a 12.3-inch high resolution display. SPACE AND PRACTICALITY The new Q5 is bigger and wider than its predecessor – but still 90kg lighter. Inside there’s more headroom and rear knee-room, while boot space is up 10 litres. Two adults will sit comfortably in the back, but a large transmission tunnel seriously eats into rear legroom in the middle seat. Safety systems are plentiful and buyers can opt
WHAT'S UNDER THE BONNET? There are three engine options to pick from – but the best seller, and our pick of the bunch, is the 187bhp, 400Nm, 2.0-litre TDI, which will account for 60 per cent of sales in the UK. This comes as standard with a clever new Quattro Ultra all-wheel drive system that can switch seamlessly between two and fourwheel drive automatically. Fuel economy is 56.5mpg with emissions of 132g/km, and it hits 60mph in 7.7 seconds and goes on to a top speed of 135mph. A 2.0-litre TFSI petrol option with 250bhp is also available. It’s capable of returning 40.9mpg and emits 157g/km. A feisty 3.0-litre V6 TDi completes the line-up, producing 284bhp and a stonking 620Nm of torque. BEHIND THE WHEEL The new Q5 is quite simply brilliant to drive. We tested the car on a variety of terrain, from motorways to cities and beaches to dirt tracks; it took them all in its stride. On the road it’s quiet, refined and accomplished, while in the grit it was surefooted and secure. The revised 2.0-litre diesel engine is punchy and works brilliantly when combined with the 7-speed S-tronic gearbox - overall it’s by far and away the best choice of transmission. VERDICT Audi has moved the game on with its new Q5 but not ruined a recipe that has won it so many admirers. Stylish, comfortable and great to drive, it’s now packed with even more clever technology and features. With best in class performance and economy, and some highly tempting optional extras, we’d be very surprised if any of its rivals managed to usurp it at the top of the sales charts any time soon. Canine Hydrotherapy Does your dog need some extra help?
Y
ou may have had experience of a pet getting stiff or limping as a symptom of arthritis or suffering from a joint problem like hip or elbow dysplasia. Some breeds are predisposed to joint problems which is why it is vital to take your dog for regular check ups to see your vet, and take advice from the professionals with regards to feeding, exercise, insurance and disease prevention.
from hard ground this activity is a much more comfortable way to exercise and build muscle. Hydrotherapy is indicated for a wide range of conditions including; • Osteoarthritis • Joint surgery (cruciate, patella, hip replacement, arthroscopy) • Hip and Elbow Dysplasia • Neurological and muscle wasting conditions • Obesity The benefits of Hydrotherapy include; • Relief of pain, swelling or stiffness! • Muscle strengthening and maintenance! • Increased tissue healing • Increased mobility • Fitness and weight loss
The Veterinary Surgeon may prescribe anti inflammatory medication to control symptoms, along with joint supplements, exercise and diet advice. Another tool we use to improve the symptoms of stiffness and lameness is Hydrotherapy. Hydrotherapy is a form of non weight bearing water based exercise which provides resistance and buoyancy. The warm water (29-32 degrees celsius) encourages blood flow and oxygen to the muscles, letting the limbs create a much better range of movement than on land. Because the water supports the dog and there is no concussion
We are lucky enough to have a great relationship with our local Canine Hydrotherapy Centre, Operation K9 Ltd. Based in Sherburn, Malton and run by Registered Veterinary Nurse Rebecca Robinson with Canine Hydrotherapist James Wilkinson and Freya Mansell. If you think hydrotherapy may benefit your dog please get in touch with us for a Veterinary referral or contact Operation K9 direct on 01944 710044 or www.operationk9.co.uk

The Dangers of Bulbs Michelle Grahame RVN Station House Vets At last, the cold grey days of winter are behind us & spring is well and truly here! Many of us are rediscovering our gardens and woodlands that are coming back to life with the beautiful vibrant colours that we have all so missed. Along with this amazing kaleidoscope of colour comes some hidden, potentially harmful, risks to our furry friends. In our gardens spring bulbs have burst from the ground and are giving us magnificent displays of colour. Many of these bulbs and some plant material from their flowers are highly toxic and pose a real threat to our pets. Examples of bulbs that are known to be highly toxic and poisonous to animals are daffodils (Narcissus species) and autumn flowering crocus (Colchicum Autumnale). Other bulbs that are toxic and can make your pet ill are tulips, hyacinths (including Grape Hyacinths), primrose, spring flowering crocuses and lily of the valley. Many varieties of lily are extremely toxic and can prove deadly. All parts of the plant are poisonous, even the pollen and can cause kidney failure in cats. The symptoms of poisoning can vary as different toxins act in different ways. Signs can range from increased salivation and drooling, irritation of the mouth or skin, vomiting and/or diarrhoea, abdominal pain. Your pet may become either subdued or hyperactive and distressed, or you may notice they are disorientated and seem unsteady on their feet or even have a seizure or collapse and become unconscious. Symptoms of poisoning can occur immediately or take up to several days to show symptoms, so stay vigilant. If you are at all suspicious that your pet may have become poisoned by a plant or bulb you should contact your Veterinary Practice immediately and, if possible, give them the following information: • Which plant or bulb your pet has come in to contact with. • How much of the plant or bulb material has been eaten. • How long ago did it happen.
If you take your pet to the vets for treatment it can be very useful to take a piece of the remaining plant material or bulb with you. The treatment for poisoning can vary greatly depending on what toxin has been ingested and how it affects the body. Your vet will examine your pet and may give treatment. They may need to make the pet vomit by using special medicines (please do not try to do this at home without veterinary advise as some products used to make animals vomit can cause more harm than good). Regardless of what treatment and care your pet needs, they will stand a better chance of recovery and survival the sooner they get veterinary care. To find out more about toxic bulbs and plants and what effects they can have on the body you can access information on www. PetPoisonHelpline.com If you are at all concerned about your pet please seek immediate advise from your Veterinary Surgeon.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Paul McGeechan feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving
people money, although that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the York, Haxby, Wigginton, Strensall & Huntington areas
and Paul is finding that his approach is a major factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family
of people I’ve done work for, which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Paul a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Daisy came to the centre after her owners were sadly no longer able to take care of her, she is a very sweet natured and friendly girl who would love to be part of a loving family again. We feel Daisy would be suitable to live with teenage children and over although would prefer to be the only cat in the home. Daisy has a slight heart murmur but does not need any medication for this, so please do not let this put you off.
suited to a quiet home as she can be a little shy to begin with. Akela will make a great pet if only someone would give her a chance, she could live with children of junior school age, Year 6 and over and possibly another cat.
Akela is a lovely natured girl who came to us via an inspector after her needs were not getting met. She is a quiet gentle cat who would be best
There will be lots of stalls including Everyone’s a Winner, cakes and refreshments, and an Easter Egg hunt for the children. Entry £1 adults, children free and all proceeds go to help the York animal home.
Hilda is simply a dream! This lovely older lady is very easy to please and it doesn’t take much to hear her purring contentedly away. Before finding temporary accommodation at Cats Protection, poor Hilda was living on the streets and that tough life was taking its toll on this gentle cat. Her coat was in a poor state, she was too skinny and generally looking rather sorry for herself. After some much appreciated TLC, friendly Hilda has spruced herself up nicely and is looking 100 times better and feeling 100 times happier. All this lass needs now is a warm home and a caring new owner with space on their lap and she’ll be over the moon. We don’t think that’s too much to ask for! If you would like to consider adopting this fine cat then please call the Centre on 01904 760356 or contact us through our website www.york.cats.org.uk for further details.
