A

s usual our April edition is packed full of home and garden services to help spruce up your home this spring. After an unlucky month of accidents (To my husband – I’m very sorry for the dent in our front house wall!) we will be using local services ourselves to restore our home to its former glory this month! Sometimes everything happens at once doesn’t it, though I still feel I wasn’t totally to blame! As I write, we’ve been ‘moving over’ to a new swanky, hands-free phone system in the office. We look pretty professional with headsets, waving our hands around just because we can. But, as with any new technology, the change has not been without its technical glitches, so please bear with us. Isn’t technology supposed to make life simpler? It does amaze me how much I have now come to rely on technology. I’d be lost without my superfast broadband and everything available at the touch of a button. How did we ever cope without knowing it all – and immediately?! Any useful (or useless) fact has to be looked up on the internet; dog health, holidays, people and places; it’s endless! Of course website cookies also track where you’re looking, so I’m constantly fed adverts for all of the above. With all of that data floating around, you might be aware that there are new data regulations for businesses from May (called GDPR) that will have a huge impact on how companies store our data and use it. Nicky is our self-appointed data compliance champion at the Handy Mag and has been busy making sure that all of our own business data processes are compliant. It’s one of those things that is absolutely necessary,

Celebrating 70 years of Philately in York 1948 was a memorable year; It was the end of a severe winter, the Berlin Airlift, spread of communism, assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, birth of the Prince of Wales…and the formation of York Philatelic Society! In their 70th birthday year they’re hoping to celebrate with a varied programme of events. The Society welcomes anyone interested in collecting or studying postage stamps, postal history, items of philatelic interest, historical philatelic items, postcards and labels used through the post. Richard Billinge, Publicity Secretary says “To mark our 70th birthday, I have put together an exhibition of stamps from around the world which were issued in 1948 and have so far assembled fifty A4 sized sheets covering 40 countries showcasing a total of 453 stamps!”

The Society plan to hold an Anniversary buffet in June and have also created a special mascot to celebrate – “Phil Atterley” is an animated postage stamp with arms and legs wearing a cloth cap (as every good Yorkshireman should!) Other planned events in the diary include a display on Australia in April, a visit by Leeds Philatelic Society in July, a celebration of Railways and a display of Germany in September followed by the Society’s usual annual auction in November. The Society meets at 7.30pm on the second Tuesday of each month, except August, at the Priory Street Centre, Priory Street (off Micklegate) with an exchange and bourse starting at 7pm. Meetings are usually well attended and visitors are always welcome to come along. For more information visit the website www.sites. google.com/site/yorkps/

Photographs are from the 1st Annual Dinner of the York Philately Society, held on 14th October 1966 at the Ainstey Hotel in Boroughbridge Road, York. The cost of the three-course meal was £1 per head!

Decorating With Dark Colours. By Katherine Sorrell Deeply dramatic interiors create a striking effect and are oh-so-fashionable. Do you dare to take the plunge?

DON'T BE SCARED OF THE DARK • Dark colours can look warm, cosy and inviting, as well as intensely luxurious and sophisticated. They work especially well in a WC, snug, library, dining room, home office or games room, but – with a bit more decorative courage – are hugely effective in living rooms and bedrooms, too. • What colours to choose? Charcoal grey is intense and eye-catching, yet neutral enough to work as a backdrop for most furnishings. If you prefer a colour, however, navy, burgundy or forest green will make even more of an impact – but will be harder to co-ordinate with. • If all-over dark is simply too much, add drama to a room by painting or papering just one ‘feature’ wall in a distinctive deep colour, or perhaps choosing one or two key items of furniture with which to inject moody character. • Remember that surface textures affect how light or dark a room feels. Matt surfaces absorb light whereas glossy surfaces reflect it. Painting floorboards black, for example? Choose a high-gloss finish to shine light all around. • The deeper the background, the more other colours ‘pop’ out in front of it. Raspberry pink, crimson, lime, orange, emerald and mustard are all great choices for accessories in a dark colour scheme. A dark throw is minimal yet dramatic. Tweedmill lambswool throw in navy/ silver grey, £49.99, Black

A deep blue makes a fabulous backdrop for vivid colours such as lime, pink or yellow. Annie Sloan chalk paint in Napoleonic Blue, £18.95 per litre.

A combination of charcoal and blush pink is especially effective. Bath: Floris No. 27; panelling: Sinner No. 238; both from £46 for 2.5l marble matt emulsion, Mylands Paints.

This blue upholstery shines out when contrasted with a soft, dark grey backdrop. Algernon three-seater sofa in Mallard Blue velvet, £1,140; and Roscoe armchair in Teal, £455; both Perch & Parrow.

End Of Our 'Throw Away' Society? Wherever we look we are reminded of our throw away culture. Whether it be the discarded plastics clogging up our oceans, the sweatshop conditions in an Asian clothing factory churning out wear once £1.99 t-shirts, or the 5 year old washing machine fly tipped in our country lanes. Even our major household purchases, such as a sofa, once seen as a lifetime purchase, are not immune. Vast sofa showrooms selling three seaters for £299, made from the cheapest materials, minimal lifespan built in as standard. Last year 672000 tonnes of furniture was discarded into landfill in the UK alone. Valuable resources wasted. None more so than the timber frames around which the soft furnishing is built. A wasted resource with such far reaching global consequences. Of course there is an alternative: to re-upholster existing furniture. Often though, the cost of the skilled

labour required makes the price for this almost as much as buying a new replacement, making people feel that ‘throw away’ is the better option. Yet reupholstery, to all intense and purposes is ‘new’. The original frame and other recyclable materials are preserved and, if necessary, repaired by your upholsterer and then the item is rebuilt as new to your specific design, fabric and finish. Jody Gray Upholstery is your local upholsterers located at Wath Court near Hovingham. Run by husband and wife team Graham and Jody, all aspects of upholstery service are offered from helping you to choose your fabric and finish, simple recovers, full furniture rebuilds and even bespoke furniture made to order. And if you fancy trying your hand at the upholstery craft yourself why not book a place on a weekend footstool course. Whatever the piece, consider re-upholstery before committing it to landfill. Jody Gray will create a newly designed addition to your home at less expense than buying new. Vital resources saved and landfill avoided. Let’s end the ‘throw away’ society. Love the planet? by PCSO Andy Smith 5520 As the weather improves we will all start to spend more time in our gardens or out on cycles or similar. Most of us keep a variety of power tools in our garage or shed, and in general the locks on these doors are easier to force than on the rest of your property. During the Spring and Summer it is not uncommon to find garages or sheds left open as residents retrieve items and use them at the rear of their property. Those of us with children will also be aware that once they have retrieved their cycle or scooter to use they do not always shut and lock the garage or shed door. An opportunistic thief who is passing your property will seize on any opportunity to enter a garage or similar and take power tools or cycles which have always been targeted in burglaries. Obviously the easiest way to prevent yourself becoming a victim of just such a crime is to make sure that all garages and sheds are left secure after you use them. If the door is closed a thief can not see if there is anything of value inside and if the door is locked then they will target easier properties as they will more than likely find an insecure garage not too far from you. There are a number of locks, alarms and other security devices that you can purchase to make your garages more secure. They range in price and can be purchased relatively cheaply. If you take a few moments to look in your garages and sheds you will be amazed just how much you have in there and the value of your property. The money spent on extra security will then seem even more worthwhile. You can also arrange to have your property security marked by your local Safer Neighbourhood Team. We use the Dotpeen machine which leaves a permanent mark on almost any item. It will engrave your details onto the surface of your property and can be used on metal plastic and wood. It only takes a matter of moments to mark items and this will make them far less desirable for a thief and much easier for the Police to identify as stolen should the worst happen. There are events arranged by your local Police team at regular intervals which will be advertised on Twitter and on the website but we are also happy to attend your home address at a time convenient to yourselves. You simply need to contact your local Team via the 101 telephone number or by e mail to arrange this free service.

These days most homeowners suffer from a lack of storage space. So many precious items that need to be kept – but where to store it all? That’s where Yorkshire Loft Ladders come in. The company, based locally, offers homeowners the opportunity to maximise their storage space with a loft ladder, 50 sq ft of boarding and a light all fully fitted in less than a day from just £277 + VAT. But it’s not just the affordability of the package the company offers that makes Yorkshire Loft Ladders stand out as manager Mark Hodson explains: ‘Our watchwords are Quality,

Integrity and Value. Quality in the materials that we use for all our installations and the fact that all our loft packages are fitted by time served tradesmen so our customers are assured of the best job. Integrity in that we will turn up at the time we say and make sure the house is spotless when we leave, and Value in that we offer our services at a price people can afford. Our business relies on referrals and we got a huge amount of our calls from people who have been referred to us by our existing customers - that simply wouldn’t happen if we didn’t adhere to our overriding principles. At the end of the day the old adage that happy customers

lead to more happy customers is true and we work hard to make that happen for every installation we carry out!’ So, if you want to make use of your loft space, however big or

small, call Mark on 0800 612 8359 and he’ll be happy to pop round and give you a no obligation quote so you too can make use of your loft!

Gardening Overhaul Your Lawn

It has rained so much in recent months and the ground has become so wet that there have been times when I’ve thought that my garden might be about to turn into a paddy-field! The flower and vegetable beds are starting to pick up remarkably well, but it is the lawn that seems to have taken the most obvious battering. Over-wet conditions can cause roots to die off and will reduce the oxygen in the soil. Worse still, any areas of the lawn that you’ve had to walk on, albeit infrequently, or over which you’ve had to

34

HOMES & GARDENS

Moss might look good and green right now, but it tends to look miserable later in the year as it dries out and becomes brown. move a wheelbarrow or other fairly weighty bit of equipment, will have become compacted or squashed. It may not be obvious but the air spaces that should be plentiful in the soil will have been dramatically reduced, and the heavier your soil is, the worse the problem is likely to be. So if you want your grass to be as green as it should be and ready for the summer use it’s likely to get, it’s time to get to work now. Check over your lawn mower and see to anything that needs sorting. If it’s too much to take on yourself, take it to a reputable outlet for a service as soon as possible – you’ll need it even more in a few weeks’ time! Once it is working well again, you’ll be surprised at how much quicker and easier each mowing session becomes. In most areas of the country grass will have started to grow quite a bit faster recently and so may need cutting. Make sure that you don’t set the blades

too low for the first few cuts, as this will weaken the growth and make it more likely that weeds will start to invade. You can relieve some of the soil compaction to allow air down to the roots, making for better growth and healthier grass. Do this after you’ve mown the lawn. If only small areas are compacted, use a garden fork and drive it into the lawn every 4-6 inches or so, trying to get the tines of the fork to a depth of 4-6 inches as well. Once the tines are in the soil, gently ease the handle of the fork back and forth to enlarge each hole. You now have some drainage holes. If you mix up some sieved garden soil or loam with horticultural sand (about one part soil/loam to nine parts sand) you can brush this mixture across the lawn and into the holes you’ve made. The result is a drainage system over those compacted areas. If the soil in the garden is quite heavy or contains a lot of clay, the chances are that these last few months will have done a lot of damage and the whole lawn will benefit from aerating. For an enduring and even more useful effect, buy, borrow

or hire a ‘hollow-time aerator’, either as a hand operated one, a machine or a mower attachment. This will actually cut cylinders of soil out of your lawn, and when filled with the ‘top-dressing’ mix above will result in much longer-lasting drainage channels. Moss might look good and green right now, but it tends to look miserable later in the year as it dries out and becomes brown. So apply some moss killer and then rake it all out after the time specified on the pack. It will make your lawn look worse initially, but allows more air to the roots of the grass plants and gives them more space to grow and spread too. Lawns that have suffered from serious waterlogging will really benefit from a suitable feeding regime. Poor growth and over-wet conditions will have put these plants under a lot of stress. Whether you choose a granular or liquid feed, make sure that it is a spring lawn food, as this will be formulated specially to give the balance of nutrients lawns need now. If you do use a granular feed, ensure that you water it in unless it rains shortly after you’ve applied it.

Walking on a very wet lawn soon wears it out and kills off grasses. Get these bare or bald areas sorted now and by the time the summer comes it won’t look like a patchwork. Roughen up the bare or thin areas using a rake and then sprinkle a suitable seed mix on to match in with the existing grasses. If you’ve not got many patches to sow, you can buy small patch repair packs to keep the cost down. Once all the work is done, and it may well take several hours in total (depending on the size of the lawn and exactly how damaged and waterlogged it was), try your best to keep off it for a few weeks to allow it to bask in all that pampering and take advantage of all the TLC and grow away really well. Visit Pippa’s website www.pippagreenwood. com and you’ll find some great gardening things: ‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’ (where you receive your chosen gardenready vegetable plants in May accompanied by weekly advice and tips from Pippa) plus Nemaslug, bio-controls, gardening tools, raised bed kits, Grower Frames, signed books and more!

Books

Be Happy With a Book Whether you love curling up with a psychological thriller or prefer biographies, enjoy flicking through a cookbook or need business advice, we’ve got just the book to keep you and your e-reader happy. HOW NOT TO BE A BOY - ROBERT WEBB

Actor and comedian Robert Webb has turned his hand to writing, with great success. How Not To Be a Boy is part biography, part reflection on the expectations that are put on boys and men to act a certain way. Webb reveals his grief at losing his mother and his difficult relationship with his father, and ruminates on how trying to ‘act like a man’ has had a negative effect on his life. Through it all, Webb writes with his trademark humour, taking the reader from laughing out loud to blinking back tears in moments.

THE HISTORY OF BEES - MAJA LUNDE

THE PAYING GUESTS - SARAH WATERS

It’s 1922, but the roaring twenties have yet to reach the quiet corner of London where Frances and her mother live. Frances has resigned herself to a life spent looking after the family home, but the arrival of lodgers Lilian and Leonard Barber reawakens her life, energy and passions. Paying Guests was published in 2014 and was named ‘Fiction Book of the Year’ by The Sunday Times, for good reason. A modern classic, it’s beautifully written, with believably flawed characters, plot twists and a building tension that’ll keep you reading ‘just one more chapter’ until late into the night.

The History of Bees tells the stories of three people, all connected by bees. In 1851, William is attempting to build a revolutionary beehive to bring honour and fame to his family. In 2007, George is struggling to keep the family bee farm going. Almost 100 years later, Tao is enjoying a rare day off from her job hand-pollinating fruit trees, when her son is taken seriously ill. The History of Bees was a surprise international bestseller last year and is ideal for fans of dystopian fiction.

ULTIMATE FIT FOOD - GORDON RAMSAY

ANYTHING YOU DO SAY - GILLIAN MCALLISTER

START ME UP - VARIOUS

A split second decision has lasting implications for the protagonist in this tense psychological thriller. Late at night, believing that she’s being followed, Joanna lashes out, pushing her pursuer down a set of concrete steps. Does she call an ambulance, or walk away? Both scenarios are then explored. Ingenious, original and fast-paced, this is perfect for fans of Gone Girl and Girl on a Train.

Planning to get a bit fitter before the summer? Gordon Ramsey’s latest book might help. It’s split into three sections, each of which offers a range of dishes to promote general wellbeing, achieve weight loss or provide fuel for work-outs. There are recipes for everything from healthy snacks and breakfasts to impressive main courses, and plenty of treats are included too. The emphasis is on dishes so delicious you’ll almost forget they’re good for you.

If you’re thinking of setting up your own business, take advice and inspiration from people who’ve done just that. Enterprise Nation is a website for small businesses and has recently released a free ebook. Start Me Up features stories from 100 entrepreneurs, including the owner of Cool Cold Brew, which will soon be available in Sainsbury’s, and the founder of the fastest growing baby food brand in the UK. You can download Start Me Up from the blog at www.enterprisenation.com.

When starting a business, design for a logo and marketing is one of the bigger investments made. It can seem like a daunting task, so Grace Abell of Abell Design tells us what to expect.

1 2

Browse portfolios online. You will be able to see what their visual style is and identify the type of client they work for. Find a designer who works with similar sized companies to yourself.

Tell your designer what you’d like. From having a vision for a logo design, to detesting a colour, designers need to know all your preferences upfront. We don’t want to waste time creating something you’re not happy with. Do have a budget in mind. Rates will depend on experience, though small businesses should expect to spend at least £250 on a logo design.

3

Listen to their advice. Your designer will see things from your customers’ perspective. They want your business to thrive as much as you do, so will be frank if your vision doesn’t translate well to paper. They will know your business, its competitors and understand copyright and licensing legislation.

4 5

Be honest. A designer will send you their work and expect to make amendments. We won’t take it personally if you’re not happy — we just want to do the job right.

Design adds value to your business. Designers work with clients, not for them. I was comissioned for an illustration to communicate a company’s values. I proposed we didn’t create one image, but an icon set which could be used flexibly in print and online. Therefore the client got far more for their investment. The project paid for itself within a month.

Short Story The Third Egg

“How do you blow an egg, Ben?” Ben looked up from his laptop. He’d been pretending not to watch Leanne, who was sitting at the dining table with her craft basket and a box of eggs. “You’ve got to make a hole at both ends Lea otherwise you’ll be blowing forever.” “I realise that now,” she pouted, “but look, I blow really hard and nothing comes out.” She pressed her lips against the end of an egg, puffed out her cheeks and blew. The light fitting shook. “I’ve got to blow three,” she said breathlessly, “and I can’t even manage one.” “Here, let me do it.” Ben wasn’t sure it was good for Leanne’s face to turn that colour. “I don’t want to spoil the surprise.” Leanne put the egg back in its box. “You’re not supposed to see any of this.” “What surprise?” Ben said. “I’m going to decorate an egg each for the twins.” She seemed to be weighing her words carefully. “Make them look like little yellow chicks.” Ben raised his eyebrows. “For Easter,” she added. “Wouldn’t they rather have a chocolate egg?” “My sister said too much chocolate’s bad for them.” “I bet she did!” Ben chuckled. “She said don’t buy them chocolate, give them money instead.” Leanne frowned. “I’m not falling for that one again.” “Yeah, what was it at Christmas?” Ben laughed. “Don’t buy them presents, get them Top Shop vouchers.” Leanne giggled. “Aren’t we supposed to spoil our nephews with chocolate?” Ben closed his laptop. “Then, when we’ve got kids of our own, your sister can get her own back. That’s the deal.” Leanne blushed, and busied herself with her craft basket. “I might get them some chocolate as well,” Leanne smiled. “I just wanted to make them something as a bit of a keepsake.” “But, sweetheart, an eggshell won’t last five minutes in the hands of a toddler,” Ben said kindly. “The egg’s just a decoration,” Leanne shrugged lightly, “something cute to put in the egg cups.”

“What egg cups?” Leanne’s hands shot up to her mouth. “Now I’ve really spoilt the surprise!” “Come on Lea,” Ben laughed, “show me.” Leanne cautiously lifted the lid of her craft basket and pulled out two yellow egg cups. “I decorated them at ‘Paint a Pot’ with their names on.” “They’re pretty,” Ben grinned. “Tweedledum and Tweedledee will love tucking into their chucky eggs using them.” “You have to stop calling them that!” Leanne laughed. “Let me help you blow the eggs,” Ben offered again. “I promise your secret is safe with me.” “Alright then,” Leanne frowned. “Here, hold it over the bowl so we don’t get yolk everywhere.” Ben weighed the egg in his palm and gave it a shake. “Leanne,” he said carefully, “I don’t suppose there’s any chance you’ve boiled these eggs?” “Yes,” she said, “I thought you were supposed to?” “How did you hope get a hard-boiled egg out of a hole the size of a pin?” Ben laughed. “I thought it was a magic trick?” Leanne said. “That would be quite a trick,” Ben agreed. “And why did you say you needed three?” “I didn’t, did I?” Leanne said, and hid behind the lid of her craft box. “Yes, you said you needed to blow three eggs.” Leanne took a deep breath. “That will be because the third one is for you.” She lifted another egg cup out of the basket. “That’s lovely,” Ben smiled. “And what have you written on mine?” She gently turned the cup to face him. In neat gold lettering it said: ‘DADDY TO BE’. By Jackie Brewster

Motoring X3: Truly Capable

the challenging terrain, with just the lights of the cars in front illuminating the impenetrable darkness. It’s the blackness that catches out a colleague when approaching the camp, resulting in the BMW being beached in a position that takes seven men and shovels to retrieve it from.

T

he wheels are spinning, but the BMW isn’t going anywhere. Every revolution of the alloys sinks the new X3 deeper into the huge blood-orange dunes of the Saharan desert. We’ve been tackling one of the toughest off-road routes I’ve ever experienced – from deep, rolling dunes to sharp, rocky trails – and the fact that only now, close to our final destination, one of my colleagues has managed to half bury a BMW is a testament to the X3’s abilities. Nestled in a lunar landscape, beneath a carpet of stars so bright they look superimposed on the sky, is our camp – a long way from the madness of Marrakesh, where our day began. We set off on our epic drive towards the Atlas Mountains, the roads from the city quickly opening up into out-of-this-world landscapes. Soon we’re crossing the Tizi n Tichka mountain pass, one mighty hairpin after another. Our X30d – with a new 260bhp, 620Nm engine – is the pick of the range, and on these roads it’s swift and enjoyable. At midday we arrive in Ouarzazate, and the famous Atlas Film Studios, where we drive our BMWs through the gates of the Game of Thrones city set. By dusk we’ve covered nearly 300 miles and have taken in the stunning Anti Atlas Mountains. We pass through M’Hamid, the last conurbation before the desert, in a dusty convoy of 15 brand new BMWs. Our camp is an hour of off-roading away and our X3 drifts and slips its way like a rally car across

The next morning, we’re told today will be tougher than yesterday. Five hours of harsh off-roading will be followed by a dash back across the mountains to the airport. We’re quickly back in the groove, drifting the offroader around sandy corners and clattering over sharp rocks. As the desert eases, we experience the barren, flat, dry river beds of the Ouef Draa, Iriki Lane and Erg Chigaga, all stages of the famous Dakar Rally. On the edge of the desert, a rear tyre loses pressure but BMW chaperones soon change the wheel and we continue. We’re enjoying the X3’s comfy new interior and smart multimedia system when another tyre bursts. It takes an hour for the BMW support car to arrive, and it looks like we’ll miss the flight from Marrakesh. And so begins a rush to the airport, but from screeching hairpin bends to blink-and-you’ll-missthem overtakes, the BMW takes it all in its stride and we arrive with minutes to spare. Sat, perspiring, exhausted but elated on the plane, we smile – we made it. The BMW X3 may have two new tyres, but it’s been returned unscathed and we’re taking off just 25 minutes after arriving at the airport. All credit to BMW. There aren’t many firms who’d put their cars, or a bunch of journalists, through what we experienced. It’s proven it’s a truly capable car, able to transport you and your family on any adventure – and I for one am certainly looking forward to the next one. By James Baggot

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

Does Poor Oral Health contribute to Diabetes, Heart Disease and Dementia ?

Marie Curie Says Thank you!

R

ecent research is linking common systemic diseases not only to our diet and by Christine Parker lifestyle but also to our Oral BDS (GDC 72136) Health. Our bodies work as a series of interlinked, complex systems and should not really be treated as separate areas. The mouth is one of the areas that is often overlooked as an indicator of general health. A well informed dentist can often see oral signs of common diseases. Diabetes is often associated with serious gum problems and the link between the two is well established. What isn’t so well known is that by maximising your gum health you can actually improve your general health. How does that work? When we have inflammation in the body we release certain chemicals that actually cause damage elsewhere in the body, these can travel through the bloodstream. Bacteria from mouth lesions can also enter the bloodstream and settle elsewhere in the body. Research has shown diseased lesions in the heart and brain to have bacteria in common with those in the mouth. So to reduce your risk of illness include a tailored oral healthcare programme in your daily routine. Its easier than you think. For simple and effective oral health education contact Jan and we’ll help you achieve the best mouth you can.

M

arie Curie’s biggest annual fundraising campaign, The Great Daffodil Appeal, is drawing to a close, and we’d like to thank you so much for all your support!

Once again we’ve had volunteers out in force, collecting donations in return for a daffodil, with all the money helping to fund our local nursing services, our support phone line, and research into end of life care. All of these services are there to help people living with a terminal illness, as well as their loved ones. And most importantly, allowing people to spend their last days at home, where they would most want to be. The Beast from the East may be a distant memory now, but it did unfortunately hamper our efforts to raise much needed funds, with lots of collections being cancelled the first weekend in March – we certainly didn’t want our wonderful volunteers out collecting in the snow! With this in mind, I would like to ask that if you do have a few pounds to spare, that you might consider donating to Marie Curie. Even in the freezing conditions, our nurses were still out travelling in the snow to get to the people that needed them. There are still daffodils available to buy in shops, and there’s always time to do a bit of fundraising yourselves! Whether it’s a bake sale, a quiz night, go yellow at work or school, or go all out and trek the Yorkshire Three Peaks! Thank you so much to all our volunteers and supporters, we really couldn’t continue without you! For more information on Marie Curie or how to get involved, contact Jennifer Carmichael on 01904 755260 or email her at Jennifer. carmichael@mariecurie.org.uk

Travel Belgrade

The ‘old town’ is even younger, claiming 200 years at the very most, but is stylish and colourful with tree-lined streets, outdoor restaurants and stunning buildings ranging from Romantic or Renaissance style to neo-Baroque, Art Nouveau or early Deco, in white or pastel hues. The wide pedestrian street Knez Mihailova is everyone’s favourite, the place to meet friends, enjoy a drink or browse the luxury shops before heading to the vast Republic Square. There you can gaze at the equestrian statue of 19th century ruler Prince Michael, the National Theatre and the National Museum containing some 290,000 exhibits from around the world. Most valuable is the Miroslav’s Gospel, the oldest Cyrillic manuscript of its kind, with 362 illuminated pages dating back to around 1180.

W

hichever way you arrive, the first sight of Belgrade takes your breath away, the ‘White City’ rising like a sphinx above the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers. Up on the hill, the iconic spire of St Michael’s, the Orthodox cathedral, dominates the old town but all eyes are set on the citadel spreading along the ridge, 125 metres above the valley. This strategic location fired up battles and invasions for almost 2,000 years, razing the city to the ground 44 times, but in the new independent Serbia peace has come and the old fortress sprinkles towers, turrets and walls in the wonderful oasis of Kalemegdan, the city’s central park. Birds twitter all around and there are statues and flower displays, grand staircases, fountains and gates, a few crenellations, a couple of museums and churches and lots of winding paths and shaded seats where locals come to chat or play chess. Visitors stroll along the beautiful cliff top promenade to enjoy the views, the modern city in the distance, the bridges, the cruising boats anchored along the Sava, the green waters of the Danube flowing around the Big Island’s nature reserve. Excavations have revealed the presence of the Vinca, one of the oldest prehistoric cultures in Europe, the Celts, Romans and many others, but surviving fortifications only date back to the 18th century, rebuilt by Austro-Hungarian and Turkish rulers.

Belgrade has myriad churches, including Saint Sava rebuilt in the 20th century and now one of the largest in the world, honouring the country’s medieval patron saint and founder of the Serbian Orthodox Church. Saint Sava is set on the Vracar plateau but nearer to the town centre is an elegant cluster of former palaces, now turned City Hall and Presidential Seat, enhanced by lawns and flower beds. Look out for the House of the National Assembly across the park, pristine white and fronted by sculptures of ‘Black Horses Playing’. Relaxed and cosmopolitan, easy to walk around, Belgrade is a delightful capital, from the gently buzzing centre and waterways to the lovely Botanical Garden or the secluded Bohemian District around Skadarska Street. Once home to gypsies, this steep cobbled lane is full of old charm, a hideaway for writers, artists and savvy visitors. There are intriguing paintings and trompe l’oeil, antique and ethnic shops, small galleries and inviting flower-draped terraces serving delicious food and wine at affordable prices. Guitar, harmonica, violin or tamburitza, traditional music sounds in every corner, late into the night but a world away from the throbbing nightclubs and floating restaurants along the Sava. Meanwhile on the cliff-like ridge, all is quiet and the old citadel glows high above the mighty rivers. By Solange Hando

Volunteering Opportunities Castle Howard is a magnificent 18th century residence set within breathtaking landscape in the heart of North Yorkshire, close to the busy city of York and the market town of Malton. We are keen to grow our group of friendly and enthusiastic volunteers that help us ensure that our visitors have an excellent experience. We have opportunities, both indoors and outdoors working alongside our House (Chapel) and Gardens teams, sharing stories of our rich history, and bringing to life the amazing collections we hold. Outdoors, volunteers are able to work alongside our Grounds team assisting with a variety of gardening tasks including rose dead-heading, hoeing, edging and weeding, tidying away the borders, clearing leaves and mulching. This is a wonderful opportunity to work alongside people with similar interests, develop your knowledge of Castle Howard’s long history and contribute to the preservation and conservation of Castle Howard for future generations to enjoy. No previous experience is required as training will be provided. If you are interested in being a part of our volunteer team, we would be keen to hear from you. Enquiries can be made to hr@castlehoward.co.uk.

How healthy are your dog's eyes?

T

by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

he eyes are very complex organs and thankfully function normally most of the time. Externally the eyes are protected by the eyelids and also the third eyelid (in the corner of the eye). Healthy eyes: Your dog’s eyes should be open, sparkly clear and free from any discharge or excessive tearing. Inside you can see the coloured part of the eye (the Iris) and the pupil which responds to light. You can also gently draw back the upper eyelids to see the ‘white’ of the eye, which should be just that- white or marginally pink. However problems can occur and here are some of the common ones: Dry eye – Occurs when there is inadequate production of tears by the tear glands and is normally an immune-mediated condition in dogs. Most commonly this is seen in middle to older aged dogs as well as specific breeds, typical signs include increased levels of thick, yellowish discharge from the eyes, pinkness of inner eyelids and white of eyes. Discomfort may be noticeable, with increased blinking or rubbing of the eyes. Diagnosis of this condition can be made by using a simple test to measure tear production. Treatment is necessary with an ointment containing ciclosorin which is usually applied twice daily to the affected eye and is lifelong. Keeping the treatment consistent is important for the medication to work and for the eyes to stay comfortable. Many dogs also need lubricants applied regularly throughout the day. Cataracts – A cataract occurs when the transparent lens inside the eye becomes opaque. Cataracts affecting the whole of the lens will cause blindness. Hereditary cataracts can be present at various ages and in a large number of breeds. Cataracts are also commonly seen in diabetic dogs and these develop very quickly, causing blindness in just days or weeks. Advanced cataracts also cause inflammation inside the eye, which can lead to other problems

including glaucoma (a high pressure inside the eye). Any eye with a cataract should therefore be monitored regularly. Cataract surgery to restore vision is possible in many cases and will require a referral to a specialist ophthalmologist. Glaucoma – This is high pressure inside the eye, which causes blindness if not treated appropriately and quickly. Changes you may notice include redness of the white of the eye, a clouding/blueish colour to the cornea or lethargy due to pain. As Such any dog presenting with this sort of “red eye” should be treated as an ocular emergency. Early diagnosis is the golden rule with eyes, so don’t delay! If your pet is showing any symptoms of eye problems, make an appointment today!

Don't put your pets at risk-ensure their vaccinationsare up to date! Dr Sarah Hunter B.Vet Med MRCVS. Station House Vets the disease can be transmitted whenever your dog is in contact with other dogs, for example on a walk, at the park or at the groomers. The disease is spread through droplets when the dog coughs or sneezes and can result in contamination of surfaces. The vaccine doesn’t completely prevent the disease but does reduce the severity of clinical signs and reduces the chance of it spreading to other dogs. Most kennels will require evidence of vaccination before allowing your dog to stay at the kennels.

Why is vaccinating our pets so important?

Many of the diseases that we vaccinate against can be fatal. Recently there have been cases of Leptospirosis reported in our area. Leptospirosis can be picked up from watercourses, particularly where rats have been and it can be passed on to humans, known as Weil’s Disease. Leptospirosis causes kidney failure in dogs and is often fatal, but it can be prevented by vaccinating annually. We provide the most up to date version of the leptospirosis vaccine which protects against four strains of thedisease. Are we over-vaccinating?

What about my cat?

Cats also need to be vaccinated annually, especially if they are outdoor cats as they can come into contact with stray cats who may be harbouring fatal diseases. Some cat diseases can go un-noticed for a long time and only become apparent when the animal is stressed or suffering from another condition, making it even more important to have them checked annually and to keep them up to date with their vaccinations.

We follow the WSAVA guidelines on vaccinating dogs that states that the core vaccinations for Distemper, Hepatitis and Parvovirus should be given every three years. We also offer blood testing to check your dog’s titre levels, if the levels are high it means that there is still some protection from the vaccination and we wouldn’t need to vaccinate again until the following year. However, the vaccination against Leptospirosis must be given annually and currently there is no titre testing available for this disease.

Are there any other benefits of performing annual vaccinations?

When your pet has a vaccination we also perform a health check, this allows us to pick up any problems which may have gone un-noticed, we can then advise on the appropriate steps to resolve the problem or provide further diagnostics and treatment. We can also weigh your pet, advise on nutrition and discuss a parasite treatment protocol tailored to your pet and lifestyle.

Should I vaccinate against Kennel Cough if my dog doesn't go in kennels?

The name Kennel Cough implies that the disease only occurs when the dog goes into kennels. However,

VACCINATION AMNESTY Restart your pet’s vaccinations for the price of a booster. If your pet has missed a vaccination, please call us on 01653 618303

Puzzle answers

Poetically Incorrect By The Pastoral Poet Would I be causing a breach of the rules, By searching the inner vestibules Of my mind, instead of the minds of fools? I wonder, --- I wonder. We’ve become imperious, And ever so serious. Forgive me for seeming indignant. But the British humour, Has developed a tumour, I fear it may be malignant. The lines that follow, Though puerile and hollow, Are a whimsical play on words. Will the brash innuendo, Prompt a scathing crescendo, From the parallel universe nerds? Does a mountaineer seek sunnier climes? Is being futuristic a thing of the past? Does a topless girl keep abreast of the times? Does a cobbler have work to last. Does a whisky drinker scotch a rumour? Is a brass band inferior to a band of gold? Does a baker never make a bloomer? Do bells become tired of being tolled? If asked to choose a classical air, Is Mozart on your Liszt? Do misogynists play solitaire, And never partner whist? Did Christopher Robin, Know Christopher Wren? Is fancy dress just for the guise? Is Kleenex only meant for men, Or is it a tissue of lies?

Pictograms 1. The joke is on you 2. Man about town 3. The tip of the iceberg
