W

elcome to our April edition.

It’s been a busy few months at home. My other half is frantically trying to get his new greenhouse sorted before the spring weather sets in properly. You might guess that he will be growing fruit and veg and other useful plants in there but no! The much-loved cactus collection will get the whole greenhouse. The collection has travelled with us for over 25 years to all of our houses and has had locations from a back bedroom desk, a half shed/greenhouse set-up, cramped scruffy little greenhouse and, currently, our utility room. But this year it will be treated to a large luxury greenhouse and pride of place in the sunniest spot in the garden. I don’t have anything against the cacti (they are weird!) but it’s just not the most exciting plant collection in the world. When we got married my father-in-law actually sent us a card from the said cacti and that, I think, says it all! As you might have gathered, gardening is not really my thing. I’m very good at remembering plant names and I enjoy seeing the garden through changing seasons but I don’t often get out there and muck in. If gardening is not your thing either, why not contact one of our local advertisers to help you enjoy your outside space more. Hopefully Easter weekend will provide the sort of weather that will encourage us all to get out and about. There is so much to enjoy at this time of year and the Handy Mag is packed full as usual of everything you need to know. With Easter school

EXCITING TIMES AT THE MILTON ROOMS

ou may have noticed an increased stirring of activity at Malton’s Milton Rooms recently – and if not, then a quick glance at the venue’s website or Facebook page might surprise you! You might also have become aware of the new ‘I love the Milton Rooms’ branding which has been a key aspect of the ongoing strategy to re-kindle interest in the building that dominates the south-west corner of the Market Place. The Milton Rooms is actually a complex of 3 different inter-connected spaces: a 1930’s Art Deco dancehall providing flexible and adaptable space; a 40-capacity studio bar; and The Assembly Rooms, an 1840’s Georgian ballroom facing Yorkersgate. Operating as a charitable limited company, The Milton Rooms is volunteer-operated and is largely self-funded from events and room-hire. The Board and Management Team are passionate and determined to continue providing great live entertainment. It has long been the home to Malton and Norton Musical Theatre’s pantomime in January and Ryedale Youth Theatre’s musical extravaganzas in April, as well as host to many community-related events including vintage dance classes and Musical Memories. Working

with specialist performers and promoters has become an important aspect of event programming. In conjunction with Blues aficionado Paul Winn, The Milton Rooms is now home to Ryedale Blues Club. In 2019, new collaborations with Malton’s own awardwinning presenter and entertainer Ryan Swain will generate some fantastic family entertainment and talent show events and, in September, the venue will host Ryedale’s first ComiCon/ Cosplay event. If you’re looking for space to host a 40-400 capacity meeting, party or other event, there are 3 great spaces to choose from at highly competitive rates – and some great food suppliers on the doorstep! Being a venue creates many different volunteering opportunities and if you’re tempted by the footlights and rubbing shoulders with some well-known names please feel free to get in touch via volunteers@ themiltonrooms.com or on 01653 696240. The board is in need of 2-3 potential new directors/trustees, especially with fundraising/business development, artistic strategy and operational team management experience. www.themiltonrooms.com / www.facebook.com/ themiltonrooms

Easter Message By Dr John Sentamu, Archbishop of York, There’s a reason why we call the Christian story ‘the Good News’. There’s a reason why I tell anyone who wants to hear why this Easter season is so life-changing. That reason is a person - Jesus Christ. God identifies with all our pain and suffering because his Son Jesus suffered the worst that humanity could throw at him on that first Good Friday. He suffered that unspeakable death on the cross so that each one of us might have the opportunity to know God intimately and live lives of true freedom and justice. As my friend and former Archbishop Rowan Williams writes: ‘.. wherever you are, however lost you are, however much darkness there is around you, you have not gone beyond the reach of God.’

D

oes an eagle get troubled by traffic ? Is a whale disturbed by a hurricane? No, one soars high above it all and the other dives deep. We too are invited to explore both the depths and the heights as we follow the central events of the Easter story. Friends, are you ready? One of my fondest memories of Palm Sunday, the Sunday before Easter, was cutting down the palm branches in my dad’s garden. When we had gathered lots, my brothers and sisters and I would set off in procession from our house to the church, joined by our neighbours on the way. We would wave our palms, sing and dance in celebration of the day of Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. On Maundy Thursday, Christians remember a very special last meal – the Last Supper which Jesus had with his disciples before he was Crucified the next day, Good Friday. At this meal, Jesus acts as their servant, he washes their feet and looks after them. ‘This is the way I want you to care for one another’, he tells them. ‘If I can do this, so can you’.

Jesus, through his life with us and death for us, has carried out a rescue mission to bring us back into a living relationship with God. Two thousand years ago, Jesus Christ came to earth not to start a new religion but to offer every human being the opportunity of friendship with God, of the possibility of His life taking shape in us, and the transformation that this brings. Digging deep is not just about finding buried treasure but is about finding a place of deep spiritual renewal. Throughout Lent and in this wonderful season of Easter, I invite you to join me on this Pilgrim journey. There is a free app to sign up https://www.churchofengland.org/pilgrim for daily emails; each containing a short Bible reading, an invitation to reflect, a suggestion for prayer and a prompt to act. These resources can be used by anyone, at whatever stage of their faith journey. Easter begins for me as Easter Eve draws to a close with Baptisms and Confirmations in York Minster. In the darkness the great Easter Fire is brought in and we join in the joyful Easter shout of acclamation – “Christ is Risen” and the response, “He is risen indeed! Alleluia!” From Copmanthorpe to Clifton, from Acomb to Acaster Malbis, I pray that we too are an Easter people. I’ll be preaching at York Minster on Easter Sunday at 10am – all are welcome - see you there! thehandymag.co.uk | 25

TOP TIPS FROM A DENTAL PROFESSIONAL

DO YOU KNOW HOW TO BRUSH YOUR TEETH?

I

’m sure we all think that we do, but how do we know we’re getting them really clean. If you notice tartar and stains building on your teeth between appointments you probably aren’t doing quite as good a job as you might think. by Christine Parker Were you shown by your parents, BDS (GDC 72136) the TV or do you just wing it and hope that you’re doing a good job? Gum disease can start in your twenties or even earlier. You might never notice you have a problem until your teeth loosen or the gums become tender or start to bleed. Gum disease can increase your risk of heart disease, diabetes and other chronic health conditions. Your dentist can point out the areas you might not be brushing so well, they can often tell if you are right or left handed by the pattern of brushing! They can show you how to really get into missed areas to stop the progress of any gum problems. Frequently forgotten is cleaning the spaces between the teeth, these can be areas of food and plaque stagnation and are rarely accessed by brushing alone, even with an electric brush. Modern interdental sticks are quick and easy to use and your dentist can advise you of the best size. Using them regularly means you’ll need less scaling and potentially fewer fillings. In an age where a clean, white, healthy smile is becoming more and more desirable, a professional demonstration of good brushing tailored to you is an essential skill. For a full oral health consultation please call Jan on 01347 878111.

TO THE TAX MAN I BEQUEATH...

S

By Julie Wilson, Chartered Financial Planner at PenLife Associates

o, in theory Inheritance Tax (IHT) attempts to spread wealth ‘fairly’basically stopping the rich from getting richer. Some people believe that state money benefits everyone. But we know the UK Government wastes hundreds of billions per year. Which means more and more people are deciding they want control over who benefits from their money when they die. The current IHT allowance is a meagre £325,000. If you’re worth less than this when you die, then Inheritance Tax should not be a problem for you. But anything over this limit is taxed at 40%, which isn’t far off half. You’re likely to have paid tax throughout your life. Who would let the Government take another 40% of it when you die? Yet the Tax Man collects over £6 billion in this unfair tax every year. And yes, from 2021 an extra £175,000 allowance could be available for those who are leaving their main residence to direct descendants. But – as we predicted - house price increases are simply swallowing up this additional allowance. People who have accumulated wealth have

usually done so through hard work and making smart investment decisions. What they don’t realise is that could all be for nothing if the Tax Man benefits from it rather than their family. We are often involved – sometimes too late – in cases where the Tax Man stands to get a much bigger legacy than the family. That just can’t be right. The Government is quite happy to waste your money on failing schemes, false promises and benefitting people who haven’t worked half as hard as you. Inheritance Tax is in effect a voluntary tax. There are many simple actions to avoid it or soften the blow. Which means your family won’t lose out. What bothers me most is that Inheritance Tax is attacking more and more ordinary hard working families. Which is why I do everything in my power to protect my clients’ money. If you want to join hundreds of our clients who’ve decided their family, not the tax man, should inherit their money, call us now for a friendly no-obligation chat with one of our Inheritance Tax specialists.

Short Story The Easter Hedgehog “Derek, what are you doing out here at the crack of dawn?” Kelly, with a milk bottle in each hand, was surprised to find her husband hiding under the carport. “Kelly, you nearly gave me a heart attack!” Derek gasped. “What are you doing up?” “Something’s been drinking the cream off the top of our milk,” Kelly said. “I have to bring it in as soon as the milkman’s been.” “Just get under here quick.” Derek pulled her elbow. “You’ll give the game away.” “What game?” Kelly huddled next to him.

At Christmas Carl had decked Derek’s conifers in toilet roll, and on Valentine’s Day Derek had filled Carl’s van with balloons.

“Operation Soak The Easter Bunny,” Derek smiled, rubbing his hands together. “You mean soak Carl?” Kelly sighed. “Honestly, when are you two ever going to grow up?”

whispered. “It’s all brown and spiky.”

Derek and his brother-in-law Carl had a long history of playing practical jokes on each other. At Christmas Carl had decked Derek’s conifers in toilet roll, and on Valentine’s Day Derek had filled Carl’s van with balloons. Derek knew a revenge attack was overdue.

The strangely dressed figure scurried under the washing line and stepped onto the booby-trapped lawn. Derek deftly turned on the tap.

“It’s a hedgehog mask.” Kelly frowned. “Perhaps his Easter Bunny costume didn’t fit?”

Kelly hugged herself to keep warm. “How can you be so sure he’s coming today?”

The hosepipe gurgled and the sprinkler system hissed into life. Their visitor leapt into the air like a startled cat as thousands of icy jets shot up his dressing gown.

“Because the man’s an idiot,” Derek smirked. “He’s been dropping hints that I would be ‘hopping mad’ at Easter, and yesterday I spotted him coming out of the fancy dress shop in town with a pink rabbit suit under his arm.”

Derek and Kelly howled with laughter. Holding his hedgehog mask onto his face, Carl sprinted right past them and back through the gate. A familiar voice behind them said, “What are you two cackling at?”

“You think he’s coming as the Easter Bunny?” Kelly laughed. “This I’ve got to see.”

“We’ve just given Carl the fright of his life,” Derek laughed, and turned to find Carl, dressed as a pink bunny carrying a tray of eggs.

“But I’m ready for him,” Derek chuckled. “I’ve rigged up the sprinkler system on the lawn to full power, and I’ve got my hand on the outside tap. Hang on, someone’s coming through the gate now.” Derek and Kelly held their breath as a dark figure crept along the path beside them.

“How did you get changed so quickly?” Kelly gasped. “Where’s your hedgehog mask?” “I don’t have one,” Carl said, “unlike that sopping wet chap who just ran past me.”

“I thought you said he was coming as the Easter Bunny,” Kelly whispered. “He’s wearing an old brown dressing gown.”

“So, who was that?” Kelly clutched her milk bottles to her chest, and a thought occurred to her. “You don’t suppose he’s the one who’s been guzzling the top of my milk, do you?”

“And what’s that mask he’s wearing all about?” Derek

Scribe to Screen

Don’t miss out on reading the novel of these TV and film adaptions BIG LITTLE LIES

Liane Moriarty Series two of Big Little Lies is due this June. If you haven’t yet read the book that the first series was based on, now’s the time. It follows three mothers in the run up to a murder investigation. Madeline is fiercely loyal, impetuous and prone to holding a grudge. Celeste is stunningly beautiful but her perfect home life isn’t all it seems. The youngest of the three, Jane, is struggling with a secret from her past. As the three women become closer, a rift grows between the trio and the rest of the kindergarten parents. But is it really big enough to lead to murder? A wry, witty portrayal of modern life.

BIRD BOX

Josh Malerman Malorie is taking the children on a journey down the river. They will all need blindfolds, because even a glimpse at what waits outside could kill them. ‘Boy’ and ‘girl’ have never seen a tree or the sky, but at four years old they’re trained to listen very, very carefully, because it’s not just monsters that can kill you. This atmospheric thriller was a hit on Netflix and the book is even better. Expect a tense, rollercoaster of a ride.

ELEANOR OLIPHANT IS COMPLETELY FINE

Gail Honeyman Eleanor has an ordinary job, in an ordinary town. But to her colleagues, Eleanor herself is decidedly odd. When she inadvertently helps an acquaintance to rescue an elderly man, Eleanor discovers there may be more to life than just existing. A beautiful 30 | Handy Mag | April 2019

book about the importance of human connections. The film is currently in development, starring Reese Witherspoon as Eleanor.

THE KNIFE OF NEVER LETTING GO

Patrick Ness In Prentisstown it’s never quiet. The thoughts of men and animals crowd you wherever you walk. But then Todd finds a patch of silence, where the thoughts of others can’t penetrate, and discovers that everything he believes to be true may be a lie. The Knife of Never Letting Go is the first book in a series. The film adaptation, Chaos Walking, hit cinemas last month.

THE WOMAN IN THE WINDOW

A. J. Finn Dr Anna Fox is agoraphobic and lives alone. She spends her days watching films, talking to people online and spying on the neighbours. She also drinks a lot of wine and is rather slapdash with her medications. So when she thinks she’s witnessed a serious crime, how can she make people believe her? And can she really trust her own judgement? A slow-burning thriller. Read it before the film comes out this autumn.

Music and Dementia: breaking the silence

SEEING IS BELIEVING A YouTube video viewed over two million times shows an American man called Henry, living in residential care, who for ten years barely communicated with his carers and family members. The video shows that after listening to the music he enjoyed as a young man on an iPod, Henry is literally ‘restored to life’: singing, moving his body and giving spirited answers to the questions posed by an interviewer.

Y

our first kiss, that devastating relationship break-up or the holiday of a lifetime: music has the power to evoke memories in ways that nothing else can. But what if you can no longer remember key events in your life? Recent research has shown the remarkable effect music can have on dementia patients, many of whom have lost the ability to communicate. Children respond to music at an early age, before words and language are developed, so it’s not surprising that music can still provoke a powerful reaction when our verbal capabilities have been reduced or lost. SOUND SCIENCE Listening to music can lift your mood by stimulating the release of dopamine, a chemical neurotransmitter that helps to control the brain’s reward and pleasure centres. In a 2011 study by McGill University in Montreal, participants’ dopamine levels rose up by 9% when they were listening to music they liked. When adults come together as a group to sing or listen to a piece of music, a similar effect can be found. Scientists have discovered that their bodies release the hormone oxytocin (the effect of this ‘bonding hormone’ can be seen when a parent sings a lullaby to their child) and this shared experience can create strong ties of friendship and community. 32 | Handy Mag | April 2019

Chreanne Montgomery-Smith had a similar experience while working in a nursing home, when she noticed that residents responded positively to music. “One of the activities I did with them was a quiz which involved playing familiar tunes,” explains Chreanne in an interview with Age UK. “The first week I did it nobody sang, the second week a few people joined in. By the third week everybody was singing along. It made me realise that people with dementia had a special ability to remember songs.” She went on to found Singing for the Brain, which is run by the Alzheimer’s Society. This initiative aims to boost confidence, self-esteem and quality of life for people with dementia and their carers through interactive singing sessions. Scientific research into the effect of music on dementia sufferers has yet to reach any definite conclusions, but according to Chreanne Montgomery-Smith, the benefits of bringing music into the lives of patients is clear: “Even if people with dementia can’t talk, they may be able to sing, whistle, clap or tap their feet. It helps them, and their carers, to feel life is worthwhile.” By Kate McLelland

Chicken & Rice Burritos Ready in: 30 minutes | Makes 4

TIP Use a 250g pouch microwave Mexican style rice instead of cooked long grain rice. Add to the pan with 2 tbsp water and stir-fry until piping hot.

Make these quick and easy wrap for on-the-go lunch or supper. Wrap tightly in foil to transport. INGREDIENTS • • • • • • • • • • •

1 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, peeled and finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed 100g easy-cook long grain rice, boiled, drained and cooled (see tip) 2 tsp chilli powder 350g chicken breast fillet, thinly sliced Half a red pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced Half a green pepper, deseeded and thinly sliced 4 large flour tortillas 4 tbsp tomato salsa Lime wedges, to serve

34 | Handy Mag | April 2019

1. Heat the oil in a large non-stick frying pan over a medium heat and fry the onion and garlic for 5 minutes until softened. Add the rice and chilli powder and stir-fry over a medium heat for 2-3 minutes. 2. Meanwhile, heat a cast-iron griddle pan over a high heat. Add the chicken and cook for 3-4 minutes, turning once until the chicken is seared and cook through. Add the peppers to the pan after 2 minutes and cook till soft. 3. Cut the cooked chicken into thin strips and stir into the rice mixture with the peppers. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 4. Warm the tortillas as directed on the packaging. Place a tortilla on a chopping board and spread with 1 tbsp of the salsa. Top with a quarter of the chicken and rice mixture. 5. Fold in the sides towards the centre then roll up tightly to completely enclose the filling. Repeat with the remaining ingredients to make four burritos in total. Serve the burritos halved, with lime wedges.

Apricot & Orange Cheesecakes Ready in: 40 minutes, plus chilling | Makes 4

INGREDIENTS • • • • • • •

125g digestive biscuits, crushed 40g unsalted butter, melted Zest and juice of a small orange 2 tsp powdered gelatine 250g full-fat soft cheese 25g caster sugar 200ml double cream, softly whipped

FOR THE TOPPING • 200g dried apricots, chopped • 150ml orange juice • Mint sprigs, sliced apricots and fresh berries, to decorate 1. Place four 9cm ring moulds on a baking tray lined with baking paper (see tip). Mix together the crushed biscuits and butter and divide between the ring moulds, pressing down firmly with the back of a teaspoon. Chill for 30 minutes.

2. Place the orange juice in a small heatproof bowl and sprinkle over the gelatine. Microwave on the high setting for 30 seconds then stir until the gelatine has dissolved. Cool for 5 minutes. 3. Place the soft cheese in a bowl and beat in the orange zest and caster sugar until smooth. Gently fold in the cooled liquid gelatine followed by the whipped cream. Spoon into the moulds and level the surface. Chill for 3-4 hours. 4. To make the topping, place the apricots and orange juice in a small pan and simmer for 5-10 minutes until the apricots are softened and nearly all the liquid has evaporated. Leave to cool, then process with a stick blender to make a smooth thick puree. 5. Spread the apricot topping gently over the set cheesecakes and return to the fridge for at least 2 hours. To serve, run a knife around the edge of each mould and gently lift away. Serve decorated with sliced apricots, berries and mint sprigs.

Heavenly Herbs by Pippa Greenwood

P

lants in pots have become trendier in recent years; indeed put just about anything in a container and someone will want it in their garden. But life in a pot or other container suits some plants better than others, to say the least. I’m not exactly a dedicated follower of horticultural fashion, but I have to say that I’ve always liked to grow herbs in pots. For starters they look pretty, and there are lots of ornamental variegated forms that are readily available too. But perhaps more importantly, herbs in pots can be kept in any well-lit spot close to the house. There’s no need to worry if your garden soil is too wet and soggy for them and, best of all, no need to go traipsing to the far end of your garden on wet, windy evenings just because you fancy perking up the supper with some

fresh, zingy herbs. In a planter they can be within stretching distance and you won’t even have to put your wellies on! If your life lacks a garden, then herbs in window boxes are perfect. Most do not grow very tall so won’t block the light coming into your house, many are aromatic (so perfect on a warm evening when you have the windows open) and of course harvesting is extra easy – just open the window! Making a herb planter is easy and inexpensive, and the results should be long-lasting too. You need a good-sized container – I love to use terracotta as these plants, many of which have Mediterranean origins, suit this material down to the ground. You will also need some good-quality compost, some horticultural grit and (of course) your favourite herbs. A local nursery or garden centre should provide you with a fantastic array of herbs perfect for your planter at this time of year. Some of my favourites include: variegated cream and green sage (why have just plain green?); ‘Tricolor’

sage, which also has splashes of purple on its leaves; golden lemon thyme (with a great lemony flavour); prostrate rosemary; chives; and golden oregano. But more important than taking note of my favourites, choose herbs you know you will actually enjoy eating, but opt for pretty varieties of these where available. Good drainage is essential for a herb pot or else the plants won’t last long at all. Use broken crocks (such a smashed flower pots or kitchen crockery) laid loosely over the drainage hole(s) before you add the compost and gravel. Make sure you buy proper horticultural grit and mix about one-part grit in with three parts compost. Horticultural grit is a must because the alternatives – such as grit used by builders – often includes salts or other impurities that can damage plants. Positioning the plants properly within the container is really important too. The plants will get bigger than they are when you buy them, so allow them room to grow, but remember: if you choose your favourites,

Most do not grow very tall so won’t block the light coming into your house, many are aromatic (so perfect on a warm evening when you have the windows open) and of course harvesting is extra easy – just open the window! you’ll be constantly trimming them throughout the growing season, so planting a little closer than the plant label suggests should be fine! If you include a trailing or prostrate form of herb, it helps to position it close to the edge so it can cascade downwards. Unless you have a phenomenal memory, I suggest you hide the labels around the edges of the pot, just beneath the soil, for reference later on.

Once all the plants are out of their pots and in position in the container, fill in all the gaps between the root balls and around the edges of the container with the compost and grit mixture, firming it in as you go. After you have completed the gap filling, you can top dress the compost with grit, which helps to keep drainage good around the crowns of the plants, makes the planter look better and helps to discourage weeds and many pests too. Next, water the pot well to settle the compost, top up the grit layer if necessary, then stand your pot in a sheltered spot close to the house door or even on your balcony or patio so it is easily accessible, whatever the weather. If you find you’re not eating the foliage fast enough, you can always freeze chopped herbs in ice cube trays with a little water for use later in the year when growth is slower.

National Stop Snoring Week 22nd-28th April

open, or sprays to reduce nasal swelling. If these solutions don’t work, DO see your GP. They may refer you to an Ear, Nose and Throat (ENT) specialist.

S

noring is a common problem but shouldn’t be ignored. It can affect your sleep, mental health, physical health and relationships, and may also indicate sleep apnoea. Every year, National Stop Snoring Week reminds us snoring is treatable. WHAT CAUSES SNORING? Snoring occurs when parts of your oral or nasal airways vibrate as you breathe due to a restriction, which may be permanent or only occur when your muscles relax during sleep. Risk factors include: • being overweight • smoking and drinking too much alcohol • sleeping on your back • taking sedatives or muscle relaxants • being middle-aged or older, as your muscle tone decreases TACKLING SNORING Try lifestyle changes, and ensure you sleep on your side (a tennis ball taped to the back of your nightwear or a bed wedge can help). Struggle to sleep on your side? Elevate your torso with a bed wedge. If this doesn’t help, you need to identify the cause of your snoring by using The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association’s questionnaires at britishsnoring. co.uk/itests to find suitable treatment. Problem: Your tongue partially blocks your throat. Solution: A mandibular advancement device, which helps to bring your tongue forward. Problem: Your mouth falls open when you’re asleep. Solutions: A chin strap, or a vestibular shield (worn in your mouth to make you breathe through your nose). Problem: Blocked or narrow nasal airways. Solutions: Nasal dilators or strips that hold your nose

46 | Handy Mag | March 2019

COULD YOU HAVE SLEEP APNOEA? Symptoms include: • loud snoring or breathing, especially when lying on your back, with your mouth open • short periods when you stop breathing, gasp or snort Risk factors include those for snoring, but also include: • a large neck (17+ inches for men, 15+ for women) • a narrowed or obstructed airway • nasal congestion • family history of OSA (see below) OSA (obstructive sleep apnoea) occurs when the muscles and soft tissues in the throat relax and collapse. Apnoea: total blockage of the airway for 10+ seconds. Hypopnoea: partial blockage that causes an airflow reduction of over 50% for 10 seconds or more. OSA sufferers may have repeated episodes of apnoea and/or hypopnoea throughout the night. CSA (central sleep apnoea) is much rarer, occurring mainly in older people, opioid users, and heart failure or stroke sufferers. The brain temporarily ‘forgets’ to tell your body to breathe. Don’t ignore symptoms, as sleep apnoea increases risk of: • high blood pressure (hypertension) • stroke, heart attack, heart disease and arrhythmia • type 2 diabetes (although possibly linked to obesity) • gradual loss of brain function OSA treatments include: • lifestyle changes • a continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) device that delivers compressed air through a mask. • a mandibular advancement device • surgery, if your OSA is caused by a physical problem that can be surgically corrected For more advice, visit: The British Snoring and Sleep Apnoea Association: britishsnoring.co.uk By Alison Runham

hile you could be forgiven for thinking that anything goes in interior design these days (actually, it pretty much does), eye-catching patterns are certainly having a moment. From simple geometrics to the catwalk-inspired ‘matchy matchy’ look of allover pattern – yet another rollback to the styles of the Seventies and Eighties – pattern seems to be everywhere, even in an unexpected trend for covering ceilings with patterned wallpaper or faux tin tiles (look it up on social media for examples and how-tos.)

by studying the professional pattern books created by the fabric and wallpaper manufacturers, where it is easy to see which patterns work with which. This option, however, does limit you to the offerings of one company, so to introduce greater variety and interest, try creating a mood board, using swatches of fabrics, wallpapers and paint, and cut-out images of furnishings, loosely attached to a large, white sheet of board.

may not seem like an easy thing to pull off. Start by looking for inspiration – perhaps in the form of something you already own, such as a painting, vase or throw, or else images in magazines, books and websites. Then think about where you stand in terms of your pattern partiality. Simple, graphic motifs in muted colours, or naturalistic designs in vivid shades? Large scale or small? Historical prints or modern? Don’t forget that pattern is also present in subtle ways, such as the weave of fabric or basketry, the grain of timber or the loops of knitting, for example. These almost invisible patterns all add to the dynamism of a scheme, and should not be overlooked. Next, consider where it’s appropriate to use pattern. For some, it’s a subtle element within a room, such as a small blind or a cushion cover; for others, it’s all-out, from walls and floor to fabrics and accessories. Remember that, in bigger rooms, you can afford to use very large-scale patterns for impact, while smaller rooms are generally better suited to medium- or small-scale patterns – unless you want to make a particular feature out of a tiny room by filling it with a giant pattern (this can work really well in a downstairs WC, for example). Many people are worried by the idea of mixing patterns together and, if that’s you, there’s no harm in starting simple, with just a dash of a single pattern. For anyone who wishes to be daring and combine two or more patterns, one way to start is 52 | Handy Mag | April 2019

Some interior designers are less formal, and simply like to spread everything out in front of them. Either way, it helps to place the most dominant pattern first – which may be the brightest, or the one with the largest scale – and work from there, adding others as you go. The point is to see how well the different elements work together, swapping items in and out, or changing their proportions, until the overall look feels right for you. Combining patterns can be as simple as choosing a floral and a stripe in one colourway, or it may involve time and effort spent on putting together just the right elements from a variety of sources. For patterns that co-ordinate, complementary colours are key. Lighter and darker versions of the same hue work well together, and will provide a pleasing variety, rather than all colours being exactly the same. After working out a comfortable colour balance, think about scale, as a variety of scales adds interest and impact. Bear in mind that very small-scale patterns are only really noticeable close up; from a distance they look like a plain colour, so are a decorative but quite subtle element within a scheme. Next: density. Loose, open patterns give a visual ‘breather’, while intricate patterns with closely placed designs have more drama. As with scale, when using several types of pattern together a variety of densities gives balance and interest. And finally: design. Abstract, figurative, retro, traditional, modern – you name it, there’s something for everyone, and a confident mix of patterns that cohere will make a room seem like it has evolved naturally over time and provide enormous, long-lasting appeal. VIBRANT SEASON By The Pastoral Poet

JS Woodcraft WOOD FLOORS & ACCESSORIES

Spring! Bold carefree libertine. Swaggering; Hale and hearty. Toasting the end of Winter’s dull party, Clothing all in motley green. Miscreant March flounders on an ebb tide, Leaving the touch of icy fingers, And though a hoary breath still lingers, April has arrived with a sure footed stride. All are risen from Winter’s black hours, Woken, not by the crowing cock, But by some inner silent clock. Or perchance the warmth of vernal showers. Pendulous catkins tremble on leafless trees, Smothering the air with yellow dust. Hopeful promise cast by each gust, Their fate entrusted to the breeze. The lordly pheasant with haughty mien goes, Planting each measured stride with aplomb. Beats his coppery wings like a drum, And with raucous challenge crows. Swallows in collective hordes, Make graceful wing in open skies, And with kindred spirit fraternise, Over England’s rolling sward. What limitless joy Spring imparts! Long after the hearty popping of corks Have extolled the yield of Autumn’s slain stalks. Now something more poignant is etched upon our hearts. Clive Milson

WHAT IS DOTPEEN ?

By PCSO Andy Smith 5520

There are a number of locks, alarms and other security devices that you can purchase to make your garages more secure. They range in price and can be purchased relatively cheaply. If you take a few moments to look in your garages and sheds you will be amazed just how much you have in there and the value of your property. The money spent on extra security will then seem even more worthwhile. You can also arrange to have your property security marked by your local Safer Neighbourhood Team. We use the Dotpeen machine which leaves a permanent mark on almost any item. It will engrave your details onto the surface of your property and can be used on metal plastic and wood. It only takes a matter of moments to mark items and this will make them far less desirable for a thief and much easier for the Police to identify as stolen should the worst happen.

A

s the weather improves we will all start to spend more time in our gardens or out on cycles or similar. Most of us keep a variety of power tools in our garage or shed, and in general the locks on these doors are easier to force than on the rest of your property.

There are events arranged by your local Police team at regular intervals which will be advertised on Twitter and on the website but we are also happy to attend your home address at a time convenient to yourselves. You simply need to contact your local Team via the 101 telephone number or by e mail to arrange this free service.

Established 2003

Scooters Sco ffrom rom USED SCOOTERS

During the spring and summer, it is not uncommon to find garages or sheds left open as residents retrieve items and use them at the rear of their property. Those of us with children will also be aware that once they have retrieved their cycle or scooter to use they do not always shut and lock the garage or shed door. An opportunistic thief who is passing your property will seize on any opportunity to enter a garage or similar and take power tools or cycles which have always been targeted in burglaries. Obviously, the easiest way to prevent yourself becoming a victim of just such a crime is to make sure that all garages and sheds are left secure after you use them. If the door is closed a thief cannot see if there is anything of value inside and if the door is locked then they will target easier properties as they will more than likely find an insecure garage not too far from you. 62 | Handy Mag | April 2019

Don’t be an April Fool U

Beware the tech scams trying to trick you.

nlike April Fools’ Day, which ends at noon, online trickery goes on all day every day. Some fraud is easily spotted but others can be really convincing. One of the most common kinds of trickery is ‘phishing’, which is when you receive officiallooking emails from what appears to be your bank or a big-name website. The email usually says there’s something wrong with your account: click here to log in and fix it. But the link goes to a sophisticated fake, and if you enter your details the fraudsters can then use your details on the real website. That’s bad enough if it’s just one site, but many people use the same password on lots of different ones. If the fraudsters get your details for one website, they can then get into all the other sites you use.

offenders. It doesn’t get rid of every fake email but it does filter most. Finally, be suspicious. Your bank will never email you if there’s a security problem or other issue with your account; similarly Apple or Microsoft don’t remotely monitor your computer and contact you if they find problems. If in doubt, phone the company or visit their website by typing its address into your web browser. Sometimes the fraudsters will phone you. They’ll say they’re BT, or Amazon, or Apple, or Microsoft, and their goal is to get you to download and install a program which they say will fix your problems. It won’t: it enables them to take control of your computer and either get your personal details or lock it up until you agree to pay a ransom. These calls are never genuine.

Fraudsters can take control of your computer

To prevent that from happening you can do a number of things. Firstly, never use the same password on more than one site and use the password manager built into Apple Macs, iPads and iPhones or use a third-party password manager such as 1Password, LastPass or Dashlane.

Secondly, set up two-factor authentication. Sites from Google, Microsoft and other big names enable you to supplement your password so that when anybody tries to log in, a code is sent to your phone. No code, no entry.

Other scams are really old, but they’ve been updated for the digital age. Fraudsters misrepresent items on online shopping or auction sites, or they run offers for too-good-to-be-true deals as Facebook adverts – recent ads offered mountain bikes worth more than £500 for less than £50. There were no bikes, of course, and because the fraudsters weren’t in the UK anybody they fooled would find it exceptionally difficult to get their money back. Stick to reputable sites and go with your gut: if it seems too good to be true, it usually is.

Thirdly, invest in security software. Look for ‘antiphishing’ in the features list: that means incoming emails are scanned against a list of known

Images: Norton internet security box, Suspicious page warning in Google Chrome, Google page showing 2-step authentication.

Is a Hybrid car right for me? hybrid car reverts to being a petrol vehicle – but with the extra weight of a battery and electric motor. This is especially true of plug-in hybrids, which only have excellent fuel economy figures when the battery is charged. However, a high-mileage driver would see the cost benefits of a hybrid compared to a standard petrol car.

WHERE DO YOU DRIVE?

T

here are good reasons to switch from a petrol or diesel car, such as concerns over environmental impact, tax benefits for low emissions vehicles or simply to save money at the pumps. As full-electric cars aren’t suitable for every driver, a hybrid car that merges combustion technology with electrification may be the answer.

TYPES OF HYBRID

Mild hybrids use small electric motors and battery packs exclusively to aid the engine, and never drive the wheels directly. Traditional or parallel hybrids, popularised by the Toyota Prius in the late 90s, use a larger battery pack and electric motor and are capable of a few miles on electric power alone, with the engine cutting in over a certain speed or throttle load. All electric power is gained from brake regeneration and engine power. Plug-in hybrids can be plugged in to a socket, have bigger battery packs and electric motors, and can usually travel at least 20 miles without using the combustion engine. Increasingly rare are range-extending electric vehicles – essentially electric cars with a combustion engine that acts as a generator.

WHAT’S YOUR MILEAGE?

High-mileage users still benefit from a diesel over a hybrid in most situations. On a motorway cruise, a 68 | Handy Mag | April 2019

The benefits of a hybrid system are most keenly felt around town, with the engine cutting in only when necessary. The electric motor’s instant torque means hybrids accelerate quickly from standing, and if driven gently most will remain a full EV at city-centre speeds. On faster roads, however, the CVT gearbox used in most mainstream hybrid cars doesn’t respond well.

WHERE DO YOU LIVE?

Being able to charge a plug-in hybrid or rangeextending electric car at home is critical, as they benefit most from regular charging. Ranges of around 30 miles on battery power provide a cost-saving regular commute.

WORRIED ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT?

There are a few environmental concerns surrounding hybrid vehicles – for example, battery manufacture contributes significantly to the hybrid’s environmental footprint. The hybrid wins, however, when it comes to local emissions and air pollution. The ability to run on electricity alone at low speeds helps with particulate emissions.

ARE HYBRID CARS RELIABLE?

Hybrids have proven longevity and if looked after, a hybrid’s battery pack will last the vehicle’s lifetime. Regenerative braking reduces brake and tyre wear, aiding maintenance costs.

HOW MUCH DO YOU HAVE TO SPEND? Adding electric motors and batteries means hybrids command a price premium so carefully consider the cost benefits and whether your mileage will be sufficient to make the most of it. By James Baggott

Tikal Guatemala

n the north-east corner of Guatemala, between Belize and Mexico, Tikal is an awesome site, the once powerful city of Maya rulers, now smothered in virgin forest. Discovered in the mid-19th century, it lies within the Tikal National Park listed by UNESCO for both its natural and cultural wonders. The site greets you with an ancient reservoir, one of 20 or so designed to capture rainwater, a couple of museums and a visitors’ centre, but beyond the entrance there is no commercialisation, just pristine jungle bristling with remains. Howler monkeys swing in the trees, toucans splash colour here and there and you might come across tarantula and rattle snakes or the odd crocodile basking by the water. Fortunately jaguars are likely to keep away. The main circular trail meanders for miles and guides will keep everyone safe as they point out some of the 185 species of trees, including the lofty ceiba, the national emblem, the incense tree, still precious for Maya rituals, and the sturdy Ya wood once used for lintels, at its best when cut during the full moon. The city was founded around 600 BC, and after modest beginnings the Tikal rulers established their dynasty, growing from strength to strength as they developed agriculture, religion and trade, built monuments and causeways and encouraged culture and arts. By 750 AD Tikal had 100,000 residents, but by 900 AD dwindling resources and warfare had brought its demise. Yet sizeable vestiges have been unearthed while others are still buried in the 70 | Handy Mag | April 2019

surrounding rainforest. According to experts, this is the most important city of the Classic Period in Maya civilisation. “Walk slowly,” say the guides, “listen to the silence” and as you gaze at the remains of palaces, the game courts, the unusual Twin Pyramids or the Lost World where ancestors observed the Milky Way, the old stones release the most powerful vibes across the land. Temples rise, unperturbed by the passing of time, from the old Inscription Temple to the Jaguar Priest, the most recent, built around 810 AD. Most impressive is the Grand Plaza, the heart of the city, with its acropolis for residential areas and royal tombs and several temples where important religious events were held. Among them are the Temple of Masks and the Great Jaguar Temple, the true icon of Guatemala, protecting the tomb of the famous Jasaw. A scene carved in sapodilla wood shows the victorious ruler carried back to the city on his people’s shoulders. But away from it all and wonderfully quiet is Temple IV, also known as the ‘Two-headed Snake’, erected around 745 AD and the highest at 65 metres. Climb to the top – steps are carefully concealed around the back – and the jungle takes your breath away, a dense ocean of greenery spreading as far as you can see. Mysterious sounds echo in the breeze, shadows vanish in the undergrowth and, rising eerily above the trees, the old Maya temples bear witness to a distant past. Solange Hando

Holly came to the centre via an inspector after being found in an appalling condition, but after lots of TLC and good food Holly is now fit and healthy and ready to start a new life with a loving family. She is a friendly and affectionate girl who will make a great family pet. She would benefit from attending some training classes and would need to be the only pet in the home, and is suitable to live with junior school age children and over. Hendrix came to the centre via an inspector after his needs were not being met, he is a very sweet boy who is now fit, healthy and looking for a home to call his own. He would need

an experienced owner in a home where he will be the only pet and will not be left on his own for too long. Unfortunately, Hendrix is not suitable to live with children.

Easter eggs are very tempting... by Battle Flatts Veterinary Clinic

...but did you know that they are poisonous to dogs & other animals? Chocolate Chocolate contains a chemical called theobromine which is poisonous to dogs and other animals. Generally speaking, the darker the chocolate, the more theobromine it contains, and therefore the more poisonous it is. White chocolate contains very little theobromine and although it is unlikely to cause theobromine poisoning, it is still very fatty and can make your dog poorly. Chocolate poisoning can initially cause vomiting and diarrhoea, but may also lead to excitability, twitching, tremors, fitting and life threatening problems with the heart. Each year, we see dogs with chocolate poisoning increase dramatically around Christmas and Easter. During these periods take extra care to ensure that all chocolate is kept out of the reach of your dog. Although chocolate wrappers are not poisonous, they can cause an obstruction if eaten. This can be very dangerous and may require surgery to remove. Signs of an obstruction may include vomiting, lethargy, off food, not defecating or struggling to defecate. There are many other foods that can be dangerous to dogs some of which include; Mouldy foods - Contain many toxins and can cause illness sometimes causing Muscle tremors and seizures Onions - Garlic, Leeks & shallots belong to the Allium family. These contain a substance which can damage red blood cells and can cause life threatening anemia. Macadamia nuts - Can cause weakness, lethargy, unsteadiness, vomiting, tremors & high temperature Raisins - Grapes, raisins, currents & sultanas are all toxic more so in dried forms can cause kidney failure Sweets & sugar - After eating lots of sugar or fats pancreatitis can develop (inflammation of the pancreas) sometimes resulting in organ failure Xylitol - is an artificial sweetener used in foods & also in chewing gum. Causes a healthy dogs blood sugar levels to dangerously drop with larger amounts causing liver failure ADVERTISEMENT FEATURE 74 | Handy Mag | April 2019

Alcohol - Dogs are more sensitive to ethanol a small amount can cause effects, drowsiness, wobbly, in severe cases develop a low body temperature, low blood sugar, seizures and coma Bones - When cooked, all bones become brittle and can easily splinter. Larger pieces of bone can cause an obstruction, whilst smaller pieces may irritate the gut or even damage the stomach or intestinal wall requiring surgery. If you suspect that your pet has been poisoned, or has come into contact with potentially poisonous substances, please contact your veterinary practice immediately.

um took me into the room where bad things happen, I try to avoid going to that part of the building at all costs but when she picks me up and carries me, I can’t do anything about it. This time Tarka’s mum Catriona was in there as well, she had a box full of spikey things and they asked me to sit on the table while Catriona decorated my back with the spikey things. I thought it was going to hurt as usually spikey things mean injections, but I didn’t even notice them going in! After I had been decorated, I saw Catriona moving and turning some of the spikey things which made me feel a bit tingly and made some of my muscles twitch but mummy said I was being a good boy so I sat as still as I could and stared at her until they had finished. For the rest of the day I felt so sleepy and relaxed, I didn’t even feel like going for a walk! What a strange day! Mum said that she hopes my elbow won’t be hurting as much now, I have had a bit of trouble with it recently so maybe this spikey stuff will help. Jasper.
